LANDELIJK NOORD Half an hour by bike and you’re in the middle of the countryside dotted with old Dutch villages. Rent a bike (try Fietsverhuur Amsterdam, next to the ferry) and head out to Durgerdam, Ransdorp or Holysloot. Then again, this area is just as beautiful explored by canoe, solar boat or foot. At Holyboot you can rent a luxury whisper boat and meander through the rivers and waterways that surround the town.

They can also provide a picnic basket if you so desire.

The Oostelijke Eilanden are surrounded on all sides by glistening water. While the Scheepvaartmuseum (National Maritime Museum) recalls the sea pioneers of the past, their adventurous spirits seem to live on in the area’s new and unique architecture.

It’s all happening in this former working-class neighbourhood. Following a slick refurbishment, the centuries-old De Hallen tram depot has been transformed into an urban hotspot. Plenty to do in the rest of the area, too.

DE WAALSE KERK The Waalse Kerk (Wallonian Church) dates all the way back to 1409. It was originally used as a monastery chapel, but in the 16th century it became a house of worship for French-speaking protestant refugees from the south of the Netherlands. Thanks to its fantastic acoustics, the church often hosts concerts and even recording sessions. To this day, services are held in French every Sunday.

TINY HOUSES If you look carefully you will notice that the addresses on the Westerstraat jump from to 70 to 54. Local advertising agency Natwerk ('wet work') thought that was odd and needed a fix. So they installed these seven mini houses in the same style as the full-scale homes that surround them, to account for the missing addresses.

Als je rondloopt op de Westerstraat springen de huisnummers opeens van 70 naar 54. Amsterdams reclamebureau Natwerk vond dit vreemd en kwam met een oplossing: tussen de huizen installeerden zij de zeven missende grachtenpandjes, in dezelfde stijl als de omringende bebouwing.
