AGENDA

The recently opened Theater Amsterdam adds an exciting new conference venue to the city

12

Amsterdam is a city built on innovation, whose inhabitants are constantly looking to the future. 2014 sees a number of developments – from infrastructure improvements to hotel renovations – that will ensure Amsterdam remains a top ten international conference city for many years to come.

Amsterdam MICEdition - summer 2014

Infrastructure improvements From renovating one of the city’s main thoroughfares to improving public transport, Amsterdam’s solid infrastructure is constantly being improved. The Red Carpet Amsterdam is building a new entrance to the city centre that will become a warm welcome for both business visitors and tourists. After years of planning, the first part of the new zoning of the Amsterdam Damrak, called The Red Carpet Project, is being developed. It will be finalised by the end of 2014. The Damrak will be fully renewed, as well as the embankment from Amsterdam Central Station up to Dam square. Project The Red Carpet will contribute to the new and warm look with the redesigning of the public spaces above the North / South metro line. One of the most important goals of the project is to make more space for pedestrians on this busy thoroughfare between Central Station and Dam square. Eventually the route will go from the Damrak, via the Beursstraat, the Beursplein, Rokin, the Oude Turfmarkt and the Munt, all the way to the Vijzelstraat, the Vijzelgracht and the Nieuwe Vijzelstraat: straight through the heart of Amsterdam past some of Amsterdam’s main attractions, such as the Floating Flower Market. In the South of Amsterdam, The Red Carpet route will follow the Ferdinand Bolstraat up to the Ostadestraat. Various investors will take responsibility for refurbishing buildings along the way, and operators and owners have started creating the new façade already. North / South metro line Passengers travelling from Amsterdam Central Station by metro can now make use of a new entrance to the station. Recently the stairs, floors and walkways have undergone a thorough inspection and been extensively tested. The new design gives an impression of how the future stations of the NorthSouth line will look. This subway line will connect Amsterdam along the north-south axis and is expected to open in 2017. When the new phase of the renovation is complete at the beginning of 2015, travellers will have more space around the busy railway station, according to the Dutch Railways, NS. ‘With the arrival of the West Passage and the first part of the IJ-hall, travellers are going to experience the allure of the new Amsterdam Central experience,’ promises Irma Winkenius, project director at Amsterdam Central train stations. The renovation includes a wide range of amenities for travellers.

Developing for With eyes on the future, Amsterdam is meeting the challenges of tomorrow, today. A’DAM TOWER The Overhoeks Tower, located opposite Amsterdam Central Station across the IJ, will soon be transformed into the Amsterdam Dance and Music Tower – more commonly known as the A’DAM Tower. Housing a mix of offices, nightclubs, a hotel and an observation deck with breath-taking views and a revolving restaurant, the opening is scheduled for the end of 2015.

© www.trazar.nl 2

An iconic and inspiring development The Overhoeks Tower, which previously served as a central Amsterdam office for Royal Dutch Shell, is an eye-catching office complex. Built in 1969, the building is 80 metres tall and was designed by the architect Arthur Staal. Its renovation is set to begin in the summer of 2014 and it will eventually reopen as A’DAM Tower at the end of 2015. The most spectacular plans for the building include the

transformation of its upper floors into an observation deck that will rotate, providing spectacular 360-degree views of the river, docklands and historic city centre. 2015: CREATIVE, DETERMINED AND OPEN-MINDED In 2015, the city of Amsterdam will celebrate and focus on the creativity, determination and open-mindedness that have characterised city life here through the ages. In February, the Rijksmuseum celebrates the genius of the unconventional Rembrandt van Rijn with a major retrospective of his later works, while 19th-century genius Vincent van Gogh – who died 125 years ago in 2015 – will have a major exhibition in September at the museum that bears his name, together with that other great northern painter of desperation, Edvard Munch.Other landmark events in 2015 include the 120th birthday of the Stedelijk Museum and 50 years of the National Opera.

New sustainable building for Amsterdam RAI: introducing the Amtrium

Amsterdam RAI Convention Centre

Bringing people together – both physically and virtually – expands borders... it inspires! Amsterdam RAI has been bringing different worlds, people and markets together, at home and abroad, since 1893. The RAI complex as a whole has been designed to be as flexible as possible in order to accommodate all types of events, whether they occupy the entire complex or use only a part of it. ‘Flexibility’ is a key word, especially in today’s market, and there is a growing need for locations with flexible spaces where conference facilities can be combined with exhibition spaces and/or meeting rooms – for breakout sessions or product presentations, for example. In October 2013, construction started on just such a space on the northern side of Amsterdam RAI: a new, flexible and sustainable conference, meeting and office building. The new conference and meeting facilities will be a valuable addition to this part of the complex, which already comprises Hall 1, Amsterdam RAI’s largest exhibition hall, and the adjacent Hall 4/5, making it ideal for large exhibitions. The ground floor of the Amtrium will comprise a 550m² ballroom, which can be divided into two equal parts, and a 676m² lounge linked to Halls 4/5 and 1. Sliding walls will allow the ballroom and lounge to be combined into one large space. The first floor will feature a large 108m² meeting room that can be divided into two meeting rooms measuring 35 and 36m² respectively, as well as a reception space.

success SAIL Amsterdam 2015 Held once every five years, SAIL Amsterdam sees the world’s finest sailing vessels, historical and modern, moored in Amsterdam from 19 to 23 August. This massive event will lure boating enthusiasts from all over the world. To make this ambition reality, Sail is going back to basics: the passion for Tall Ships and the Netherlands’ nautical heritage; a transparent organisation where everyone knows and trusts each other; with the easy-going and relaxed character that makes Sail a Festival of Connection where everyone feels welcome. The guiding principle is that the event must remain as accessible as ever to everyone, with an enhanced quality and impact. Not only thanks to the attractive collection of unique ships, but above all by getting everyone – the city, entrepreneurs, civil society organisations and citizens young and old – even more intensively involved.

RAI AMTRIUM RAI Amtrium is the new, flexible and sustainable conference, meeting and office concept on the city centre side of the Amsterdam RAI complex. The building fits in seamlessly with the current RAI complex while providing a new and modern look within the desired urban planning framework. In addition to the atrium, the most eye-catching element is the large greenhouse for city farming. It will provide vegetables and herbs for the new restaurant ROAST Amsterdam, which will be realised in the low-rise part of the Amtrium. RAI Amtrium is the first project to result from the RAI (Spatial) Future Vision concept developed by Amsterdam RAI and the City of Amsterdam (Dienst Zuidas). The new facility reinforces the RAI’s commitment to investing in sustainable innovation and strengthening its position as an internationally leading exhibition and conference centre.

Sustainable construction The Amtrium has already been rated excellent and received a four-star New Construction Design Certificate from BREEAMNL. This sustainability benchmark is managed by the Dutch Green Building Council (DGBC) and recognises features such as natural means for the heating and cooling of facilities – for example, thermal energy storage (TES) and solar panels. Urban farming Perhaps the most extraordinary feature of the building is its vertical greenhouse for urban farming. This allows crops to be grown at the Amtrium for use in restaurant ROAST outside the complex. In addition, the greenhouse also serves as an air filter in combination with the building’s ground-source heat pump. The Amtrium will be useable from 1 May 2015.

Hotels of Amsterdam New meeting concept

Amsterdam Marriott The Amsterdam Marriott Hotel is the first hotel outside the USA to offer the brand’s ‘people-inspired’ meeting spaces. The hotel has transformed its meeting floor into a completely renewed ballroom and seven flexible studios that focus on the objectives of the meeting. For each type of event, high-end technology is combined with dynamic service, which is targeted towards the new generation of meeting participants. The e2 million investment allows for even more effective and successful meetings. Inspired by people, imagined by Marriott.

Recent renovations

Mercure Amsterdam City Situated at the entrance to Amsterdam, the Mercure Amsterdam City is known for its convenient location for both business guests during weekdays and tourists during weekends. Thanks to the recent renovation, the hotel has become a must-see. The interior combines a warm setting with locally inspired touches. The decorative fireplace, the art works, the mirror wall and the painted images of Amsterdam are only a few of the many eye catchers. Whether it’s to meet, drink, eat, work or relax, Mercure Amsterdam City is the place to be. The hotel team is looking forward to welcoming you into their new living room.

Renovations confirmed

Grand Hotel NH Krasnapolsky In the absolute A+ location on Dam square lies the NH Krasnapolsky. Where there were initially large-scale re-building plans, the hotel will now be fully renovated instead, minimising down time. Jan Hein Simons of the hotel confirms: ‘We have new plans, which are based on renovation, not new construction. The car park will remain, as well as the Jansvleugel.’ The renovations begin this summer on a major renovation of the Jansvleugel, 144 rooms above the Garden Room. They are relatively small, out-dated rooms, which do not fit the high-end look of the hotel. These rooms will set a new standard for the hotel group, which will create new rooms in as environmentally friendly a way as possible. After this the other 334 rooms and common areas are next. ‘In four years there will be a new hotel. NH Krasnapolsky is the flagship of NH Hotels, even financially,’ concludes Simons.

Hotel developments: opening soon With overnight stays increasing year on year – especially among business clientele – Amsterdam’s hotel industry is booming, with more new openings set to meet demand. Almost 40% of all overnight stays in Amsterdam hotels in 2013 were booked by corporate travellers. With an annual growth rate of 9%, the number of beds booked for business purposes is growing faster than the number for leisure purposes (+6%). This can be explained by the fact that Amsterdam hosted many large, international congresses in 2013, which is one of the reasons why the hotel industry in the city is expanding. And to be prepared for the future, Amsterdam is building several new hotels. Starwood Hotels & Resorts brings the W hotel brand to the Netherlands with the announcement of the 169-room W Amsterdam. The hotel will open in September 2015 and is owned by STAG Europe (Grafenau). The location of the property is just behind Dam square and the Royal Palace. Meininger Hotels and Provast have signed a long-term lease agreement for the Amstel Tower. Provast bid for a tender issued by the City of Amsterdam for a mixed-use project to build a residential and hotel building. The hotel 6

section of the building, which is to be located near the Amstel Station in Amsterdam, covers an area of 7,500m² and has 165 rooms, and is going to be a MEININGER Hotel, opening its doors in 2017/2018. The Amsterdam hotel market aims to accommodate every type of visitor, with unique hostelries focused on unique clientele. With this in mind, the 153-room three-star China Hotel will cater for Chinese tourists who come to the capital. Construction will start in February 2014 at the Business Park in Osdorp. With the arrival of the Waldorf Astoria, meanwhile, guests can experience timeless elegance and warm hospitality ingrand 17th-century canal houses. Once wealthy patrician houses built during the Golden Age, Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam is situated on the UNESCO heritage protected Herengracht (Gentlemen’s canal), enjoying a prime location in the city’s most beautiful and oldest canal setting within

walking distance from luxury shops, museums and theatres. Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam is an architectural monumental masterpiece including an extraordinary arrival upon the grand staircase attributed to Daniel Marot, the architect of King-Stadtholder of Holland William III. One can experience a wealth of world-class amenities and personalised services include stylish fine-dining options, sophisticated conference and event venues and the luxurious Guerlain spa. Reservations are being accepted for arrival from 15 May 2014. Also in May 2014, the Brooklyn Hotel opens its doors in the heart of the former shipping yard-turned-cultural hub NDSM. Taking inspiration from Brooklyn New York – another iconic neighbourhood on the other side of the water that creates a whole new dynamic – the Brooklyn Hotel embraces the raw, industrial mix of modern living and working of its surroundings, and is a luxurious alternative to the Botel currently on the site.

Photo: Amsterdam Airport Schiphol

Schiphol voted second best airport in Europe Consultancy Skytrax awarded Amsterdam Airport Schiphol the prize of Europe’s second best airport at the 2014 World Airport Awards. In the global ranking, Schiphol now occupies fifth place. Even though Schiphol has a tradition of collecting many prestigious awards, COO Maarten de Groof is delighted with this recognition from the public: ‘This is a wonderful reward… But we’re not planning to rest on our laurels. Developments are occurring at breakneck pace and the competition is growing stronger by the day. Schiphol Group is therefore pursuing a major programme of investments in the quality and capacity of our infrastructure, all to better serve our passengers. On average, that will amount to €1.5 million per day – across 2014, 2015 and 2016. This will enable us to stay one step ahead and continue building a strong, welcoming Mainport.’ World Airport Awards The World Airport Awards, also known in the travel industry as the Passenger’s Choice Awards, are considered the most significant benchmark for measuring the quality of airports worldwide. For the 2014 edition, Skytrax carried out a survey among more than 12 million passengers from over 110 countries on the quality of 410 airports around the world. The independent survey has been conducted since 1999.

Benefits • As an organiser you can offer discounts of 5-15% on fares that event participants can easily book online. The fares are valid on all KLM and Air France flights and partner code share flights (for example, Alitalia, Delta Air Lines) with a KL- or AF- flight number • As an event organiser you qualify for reward tickets • The Global Meetings discounted fares are available from five days prior to five days after the event dates

• Global Meetings fares are available from/to any KLM and Air France destination, for example: New York/Amsterdam, Amsterdam/London, Buenos Aires/Amsterdam • Event organisers can also take advantage of the Global Meetings fares when making bookings via an IATA travel agent • The programme is for individual bookings, not groups Terms and conditions The event should be registered via www. airfranceklm-globalmeetings.com at least two months before it is due to start. The organiser will then receive a communication kit including a link with an Event ID code. The link and AIR FRANCE & KLM Global Meetings logos must be posted on the event website. Event participants can log in with the assigned Event ID code to book their flights. More information See www.airfranceklm-globalmeetings.com for complete terms, conditions and more information, or send an email to globalmeetings.nl@klm.com

Expanding Schiphol To maintain their position or to rise in the Skytrax World Airport Awards, the Schiphol Group and Schiphol want to increase the number of intercontinental flights and therefore need to expand the base of operations. Expansion of the shorter flights within and just outside Europe will move towards the regional airports Eindhoven and Lelystad. At this time there is no air traffic control at Lelystad Airport and is only used for training and pleasure flights, but as of 2018, these airports will also be able to receive Boeings and Airbuses. Over the next few years, approximately 10,000 flights will take off and land at Lelystad. The Schiphol Group expects that this number will increase to 45,000 flights to Lelystad, between 2033 and 2043. Therefore the Schiphol Group will invest 90 million euros in longer runways, a new terminal and larger parking facilities. Eventually, the goal is to have the regional airport expand to the second largest airport of the Netherlands, with 45,000 annual flights.

Gateway to Europe Amsterdam Airport Schiphol gave up being just an airport years ago. Some 52.5 million passengers pass through Amsterdam Airport Schiphol each year, and it is Europe’s second biggest transhipment centre for air cargo, but it’s also a vibrant mini city that never sleeps. Schiphol has always been a trendsetter in air transport. Its ‘one terminal’ concept has been much praised (and copied). Consultancy firm Skytrax recently named Schiphol Western Europe’s best airport at the Passenger’s Choice Awards. But increasing competition means Schiphol is keen to keep innovating. One aspect of this is ensuring that passengers are offered a ‘staying experience’ via a wide selection of carefully chosen shops and cafés, both before and after passport control. You can shop until you drop, with stores stocking everything from luxury clothing brands to books, cosmetics and souvenirs and all that’s in between. There’s even a branch of the world-famous Rijksmuseum, displaying genuine Dutch masterpieces that passengers can see for free. Or you can

just sit with a coffee as the world (and an amazing array of cultures) passes you by. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is also an attractive business base. Some 500 companies active in the area include many logistics firms, but also service providers and even international head offices. ‘Citigroup has its European headquarters here, and Microsoft too,” says Maarten De Groof, COO Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. Companies like these are part of Schiphol’s economic motor, which currently provides 65,000 jobs, and the airport is keen to develop this larger economic role. It actively seeks partners for Schiphol-based companies in order to strengthen its activity base. Clearly, this airport city still has ambitions to grow. 7

COBRA Museum

Amsterdam ArenA

This bright and contemporary museum of modern art is the perfect backdrop for functions. Meeting areas are spacious, and the building’s unique architecture means daylight is plentiful. Events can be hosted right in the gallery among the artworks, and the constantly changing exhibitions provide colour, inspiration and pleasant surroundings for delegates. You can limit your programme to the bare minimum (just the room hire) or broaden it to include specific culinary wishes and cultural programmes.

As the home ground of football team AFC Ajax and host to the Dutch National Team, concerts by world-famous artists, dance-music phenomenon Sensation and the 2013 UEFA Europa League final, the Amsterdam ArenA is one of the leading stadiums in Europe. The sporty, dynamic ambience, the central location, great accessibility and abundance of parking spaces makes it an especially unique event location.

Cultural programmes Masterpieces from the unique, extensive museum collection are permanently on display. In addition to the Cobra artists – the Copenhagen-, Brussels- and Amsterdam-based artistic movement from whom the museum takes its name – there are also temporary exhibitions of contemporary art, bringing the Cobra legacy up to date. From 5 April through 31 August, the museum hosts From the Guggenheim Collection to the Cobra Museum of Modern Art: Thirteen crucial works from the Guggenheim’s inaugural exhibition in 1959, marking the opening of the iconic Frank Lloyd Wright building. For a full five months, masterpieces by Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Willem de Kooning, Louise Bourgeois, George Mathieu and no fewer than 39 other renowned international artists bring the Guggenheim to Amstelveen.

Ultimate flexibility The spacious ArenA can be divided into many smaller areas, to make them suitable for all kinds of occasions. The venue can host events from 5 to 50,000 people. The stadium’s largest room is up to 1,000 people. But what makes the location an extra special event venue is the platform next to the pitch and use of the luxurious main stand to create the ultimate stadium experience. Amsterdam ArenA has recently invested in the future. The newly built ArenA Business Club is a state-of-the-art venue that provides more than 6,000m2 of hospitality function space across 15 rooms – all the while adhering to the ArenA’s strict sustainability standards. There are several three- and four-star hotels within walking distance of Amsterdam ArenA with capacity of up to 600 rooms. Additionally, ArenA is within a five-minute walk of the Bijlmer ArenA station, where trains, subways and buses take you to the city centre or Amsterdam Airport Schiphol in just 15 minutes. Museums & galleries in Amsterdam

Amsterdam is home to many of the world’s most famous museums. No trip to the city is complete without (at least) a visit to the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Stedelijk Museum or Anne Frank House. The city also has a multitude of treasures outside of the Museum District. From unusual museums about cats to an amazing collection of handbags, plus photography, archaeology and more, Amsterdam has museums and galleries to suit every type of interest. Amsterdam is also packed with theatre and music venues in a compact area. And with everything from traditional ‘brown cafés’ to bars and clubs, Amsterdam is the perfect place to enjoy a local tipple.

Nightlife

Nightlife in central Amsterdam is largely clustered in two major areas: the Rembrandtplein and Leidseplein. Both offer a variety of venues, including dance clubs, bars and typical Dutch ‘brown cafés’. The Leidseplein offers a greater variety of live music venues, plus a cluster of cosy Irish pubs. At the lively Max Euweplein you can try your luck at Holland Casino. Some of the most well-known venues in Amsterdam include Paradiso, Melkweg, Trouw, AIR and Escape. For major stadium-sized concerts, Amsterdam’s three biggest venues – the Ziggo Dome, Amsterdam ArenA and Heineken Music Hall are all located in Amsterdam Zuidoost. There are also a range of clubs in other areas of the city.

Amsterdam is a shopper’s paradise. For those with more discerning taste, the city has an excellent selection of luxury shops, ranging from designer fashion houses to unique boutiques and custom-made items you will not find anywhere else. Part of the charm of the exclusive shopping experience in Amsterdam is the lovely neighbourhoods you will discover along the way. While a couple of high-end department stores are right in the centre, you will often need to wander past the tourist hotspots to discover amazing shops tucked in between more residential streets. Amsterdam is the ideal place to shop for jewellery, as one of Europe’s diamond capitals. For the inside scoop on the diamond industry plus an opportunity to shop, pay a visit to Gassan or Coster Diamonds. You will find a number of small specialty jewellers on the shopping streets such as Bvlgari, Cartier or Tiffany & Co, head straight to the P.C. Hooftstraat.

Partner programmes

Gassan Diamonds For over 425 years, Amsterdam has been known as “the City of Diamonds” and in the green museum quarter known as “de Plantage” you will find Gassan Diamonds. Built in 1879, this is the oldest diamond factory in Amsterdam. Each day, Gassan Diamonds offers free diamond tours, guided in your own language by one of our experts. Visitors can admire diamond polishers at work and learn about what factors determine the quality of diamonds and their related value. Gassan Diamonds can provide special business-to-business activities for both small and large groups. To give you an impression of the possibilities, you’ll find some suggestions below. - Organize your meeting in the oldest diamond factory of Amsterdam. - Add a lovely lunch or cocktail to

complete your program. - As an addition to your experience, a Diamond and Champagne Surprise cocktail. Depending on the budget, there will be e.g. one genuine brilliant cut diamond in one of the glasses and the rest will carry a synthetic stone inside. Once everyone has enjoyed the Champagne, a diamond expert will then check the stones and consequently find the lucky winner of the real diamond. This promotion brings a lot of excitement, also to a “sophisticated” incentive travel participant. - For a group a watch-expert will give a special lecture about the Haute

Theater Amsterdam Horlogerie. Explaining latest designs, trends and technical developments of watch making. As well as showing an exclusive collection of watches.
