The stereotypical Dutch person is robust and rosycheeked, energetically bicycling or skating through a landscape of tulips, flat fields and windmills. Cliché? Absolutely, yet a passion for securing health and wellbeing is firmly rooted in the country’s history and culture, and the Dutch population scores high on various measures of happiness, health and work-life balance. Amsterdam provides a prime example: the city and its environs are a hotbed of health and life science initiatives, centres of learning and medical institutions. Crosspollination between established experts at the city’s two major universities as well as the Netherlands Cancer Institute, the Sanquin Blood Supply Foundation, the ACTA dental facility and the cross-disciplinary Sarphati Institute are stimulated by a myriad of cutting-edge health-related start-ups based at Amsterdam Science Park. Fittingly, as a longstanding defender of health, human rights and tolerance, Amsterdam will host AIDS 2018 from 22-27 July at RAI Amsterdam. This pivotal event will bring together over 15,000 global leaders, policymakers, researchers and advocates in the crusade to eradicate HIV/AIDS. Read more about the programme and vision for AIDS 2018 in this issue. This MICEdition also takes a closer look at two of Amsterdam’s most unique neighbourhoods: Noord (a short ferry ride from Central Station) and Oost, at the buzzing eastern edge of the city. Our tips about some of the city’s best-kept culinary and cultural secrets should give you some insights into why the Dutch are so happy, healthy and balanced!

Noord

Amsterdam neighbourhoods

On the up and up In no time at all, Amsterdam Noord (North) has been transformed into one of the city’s coolest neighbourhoods. Jump on the ferry and voyage to the sunny side of the IJ! There has been a lot of building and refurbishing on the northern banks of the IJ in recent years, and Noord is now a hip and happening destination. Along the waterfront you will find the A’DAM Tower, the EYE Filmmuseum and the Tolhuistuin. Further inland you will discover a completely different Amsterdam: historic industrial heritage sites, expansive parks, idyllic villages, and beautiful dikes and nature areas. The Hamerkwartier, a former industrial area on the eastern side of Noord, is a current hotspot: funky restaurants and cafés, a beer brewery, and one of the finest cinemas in the city. Your most difficult decision will be which waterside terrace to choose for the most spectacular view of Amsterdam.

Meeting venues EYE FILMMUSEUM Visit the EYE Filmmuseum to experience film in all its forms. Four state-of-the-art cinemas, a café-restaurant with a sun-drenched patio overlooking the water, and retrospectives, premieres, exhibitions by special artists and exclusive 70mm performances. The EYE is also a unique and inspiring location for events: groups ranging from 10 to 315 people can gather in an atmospheric meeting room or in a cinema equipped with projector and screen. Catering is available for large groups, and the EYE bar-restaurant features panoramic views of the IJ harbour. eyefilm.nl/en  ADAM TOREN – LOFT You can’t miss it: A’DAM Toren is the iconic tower located across the water from Central Station. Offering unparalleled views of Amsterdam and beyond, its stylish and versatile spaces are ideal for all kinds of events. The Loft is the crème de la crème of meeting sites, a deluxe penthouse spread over the 16th and 17th floors. Its contemporary design allows complete versatility: from corporate events for up to 225 guests to smaller, state-of-the-art meetings. All, of course, with jaw-dropping views. The in-tower restaurants Madam (with sky bar) or Moon (on the revolving 19th floor) also provide catering. adam-events.nl/about-en 

Venues NEMO Science Museum This summer, why not invite your guests at the Netherlands’ highest town square, located at NEMO Science Museum. Architect Renzo Piano designed NEMO as a futuristic building and envisioned the roof as a good old-fashioned piazza, with plenty of opportunity for interaction. His vision has become reality! On long summer days, this space of over 2,000 m2 is buzzing with life; it’s a unique urban area that offers stunning views of Amsterdam. In short, it’s a dynamic location for a friendly drink or a barbecue, perhaps even accompanied by live music. The free exhibition on NEMO’s Rooftop Square adds another dimension to the interaction theme, this time between people and the elements. Interactive sculptures give your guests the opportunity to make all kinds of discoveries about sustainable energy and solar-, wind- and water-power.

Amongst exhibitions Of course, you always have the option of moving indoors, where you can treat your guests to an event hosted amongst the exhibitions. Here they can have a go at microscope experiments or journey through the mind to learn more about how the brain functions. There is also a host of opportunities for additional entertainment, such as Chain Reaction – a show that features moving office chairs and rockets launched using the energy they generate.

Leading the way

AIDS 2018: Breaking barriers and building bridges in Amsterdam From 22-27 July, Amsterdam will host AIDS 2018, the 22nd International AIDS Conference, with the theme Breaking Barriers, Building Bridges. This event will bring together over 15,000 global leaders, policymakers, researchers and advocates for a week of holistic and ground-breaking work towards eradicating HIV/AIDS. Amsterdam, which has long been a beacon for human rights and tolerance, is ideally suited to the task of providing an inspiring and productive venue for this momentous event. Amsterdam’s AIDS experience The alarming onslaught of new cases of HIV/AIDS in Amsterdam in the 1980s – especially among gay men and via the injection of drugs – caused great anxiety among policymakers and the public alike. The city’s sizeable and dynamic gay community was understandably concerned that it would lose its hard-won civil rights gains if public health efforts to combat AIDS focused solely on prevention. Amsterdam however, renowned as one of the world’s most open and tolerant cities, instead opted to leverage its inclusive culture in the search for solutions. As a result, gay communities were crucial in shaping and leading the response to this epidemic that primarily affected their constituencies. This was in sharp contrast to other parts of the world, where gay communities were stigmatised and marginalised during the early years of the AIDS epidemic. As a result of Amsterdam’s focus on tolerance and respect for human rights as essential elements in its response to AIDS, the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the city has been relatively mild.

Amsterdam grounded its response to AIDS in factbased scientific research. When evidence emerged that drug-users were subject to increasing HIV infections, the city created the world’s first needle exchange programme. As a result, the transmission of HIV through drug-use has virtually been eliminated in the city. In other areas – particularly in Eastern Europe and Central Asia where harm reduction services have not been introduced – new HIV infections have increased by an alarming 60% since 2010. Clearly, valuable lessons can be distilled from Amsterdam’s experience. Amsterdam has also celebrated positive outcomes in its strategy of using smart data to offer testing services in underserved communities. With this approach, demand for testing is measured through appropriate, community-centred strategies, and the provision of tests is sensitive and tailored to the needs of each community. Over the past few years, a city-wide health campaign that encourages early testing and diagnosis for gay men has led to an increased number of HIV carriers receiving care at an early stage. Today, Amsterdam is a global hub for research on HIV, and is one of the Fast-Track Cities committed to reaching the ambitious target of 2030 for a cure for AIDS around the world. Major progress towards this goal has already been made on the ground, with the number of new diagnoses in Amsterdam having decreased by approximately 50% since 2010. These favourable trends are likely due to improved HIV treatment outcomes: in 2015, 79% of the estimated 6,150 people living with HIV in Amsterdam were virally suppressed.

“I don’t think we in the Netherlands recognise sometimes how lucky we are that we live in a country where we have human rights, that our rights are respected, that we have freedoms, that you can pretty much do and say what you want.” Princess Mabel of Orange-Nassau

Honouring Joep Lange One of the global heroes in the battle against AIDS was the Dutch doctor, scientist and activist Joep Lange. Lange, along with other researchers, health workers and activists, was tragically killed in the MH17 plane crash in Ukraine en route to the 2014 global AIDS conference in Australia. In 1996, Dr Lange discovered an important link that provided the rationale for the use of combination antiretroviral drugs in the treatment of AIDS. This combination therapy transformed HIV from a death sentence into a manageable chronic condition. Following this discovery, Lange focused his efforts on providing treatment for the millions of Africans dying of AIDS. He launched clinical trials and pioneered treatment for pregnant mothers to stop transmission to their new-borns. His ground-breaking discovery that pregnant women with HIV could give birth to healthy babies if they received proper treatment meant not only that future generations had a chance, but also reframed the debate by showing that AIDS is a poverty-related disease. Dr Lange’s scientific legacy is being carried on by the Amsterdam-based Joep Lange Foundation and Institute. Nobody left behind The biennial global AIDS conference this July will take place at RAI Amsterdam. It is being organised by the International AIDS Society (IAS), the world’s leading independent association of HIV professionals,

14 MICEdition Summer 2018

which includes researchers from various disciplines, medical professionals, public health and community practitioners, and policy planners. The global AIDS conference is an essential catalyst in the crusade to eradicate AIDS. It provides an indispensable forum where a broad spectrum of HIV professionals can share their expertise and real-world experiences, and identify remaining knowledge gaps. Science and policy around AIDS/HIV evolve quickly, and opportunities for education, networking and promoting best practices are critical in coordinating a global response. The conference also serves as a focal point for increasing political and financial commitments to AIDS. In order to ensure that those living with and affected by the disease are well represented at the gathering, the IAS has organised the world’s largest international HIV conference scholarship programme. The speaker line-up for the plenary programme includes some of the world’s most hard-hitting researchers, policymakers, global leaders and advocates in the field of AIDS. The two days of pre-conference meetings hone in on a broad range of topics including sexual and reproductive health and rights, addressing the needs of adolescent girls and young women in the fight against HIV and AIDS, and tackling the structural drivers of HIV. Civil society will also play a crucial role at AIDS 2018. Communities from all over the world will gather at the Global Village in RAI Amsterdam to share and learn from each other. This diverse and vibrant space will intersect the main conference programme, so that scientific sessions are juxtaposed with cultural activities, live performances, art exhibits, networking zones, and NGO and marketplace booths. Admission to the Global Village is free to the general public. Amsterdam is proud to host this remarkable event, and has high hopes for far-reaching outcomes. In the words of Professor Peter Reiss, the local Scientific Chair of AIDS 2018, “We are at a critical juncture in the HIV response. The biggest impediment to AIDS is leaving people behind. If we are serious about ending AIDS, we must ensure that the incredible achievements we have made reach all settings and populations.”

Where to eat

Group dining Meals are often the highlights of conferences and other larger events. Delegates get a chance to relax and have a conversation with each other while also enjoying plenty of good fare. A nice bottle of wine encourages extra gezelligheid (Dutch-style conviviality), too. However, meals often also present one of the trickiest event-planning challenges – where to fit all those people! Here are some of our favourite spots that are accustomed to catering to a crowd. Pick your place, make your reservation, and let them take care of the rest.

On top of the world

Amsterdam: Cultivating health, happiness and life sciences The Dutch are known for their energy and robustness, and for a lifestyle that includes plenty of cycling and hearty meals. And it’s no coincidence that Amsterdam’s happy and healthy population is bolstered by a thriving professional life sciences and health community. Ranking the Netherlands A look ‘behind the dikes’ uncovers the statistics behind the reputation: the Dutch really are healthy, happy and balanced people. The country’s healthcare system is consistently ranked as the best in Europe by the Euro Health Consumer Index, and was praised by researchers from the Commonwealth Fund as “an example of a system that works”. Furthermore, of the 125 countries examined in Oxfam’s Global Food Index, the Netherlands has the most plentiful, nutritious, healthy and affordable diet in the world. Outstanding food and healthcare are, without a doubt, crucial factors in maintaining a balanced and satisfied population. Not surprisingly, the Netherlands was ranked at the top regarding work-life balance in the OECD’s Better Life Index, and was deemed the planet’s sixth happiest place in a pool of 155 countries in the 2017 Happiness Report. It makes a lot of sense that children growing up in the Netherlands scored highest in happiness in a UNICEF study charting the well-being of children in 29 wealthy countries. The research examined five dimensions of young lives, including health and en-

vironment. An impressive 95% of the Dutch children surveyed reported a high level of life satisfaction. Hub for life sciences and health The Dutch are clearly on the right track when it comes to nurturing health and happiness. Accordingly, the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area is a hub for biomedical education and research: both of the city’s two major universities (the University of Amsterdam and VU Amsterdam) have a strong biomedical focus. The upcoming merger between the two affiliated AMS and VUmc teaching hospitals will create one of Europe’s biggest hospital groups. ACTA, one of the world’s top dental education and research facilities, is also located in Amsterdam, and many cutting-edge researchers and life sciences startups are based at the Amsterdam Science Park. Other scientific hotspots in the Netherlands – including Wageningen and Leiden – are only an hour away. The city is also home to the Netherlands Cancer Institute, which was established in 1913 in a canal house named after the famous Dutch microbiologist Antoni van Leeuwenhoek. Today, the institute has around 650 scientific staff and its Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Hospital employs close to 200 medical specialists. The only dedicated cancer centre in the Netherlands, the hospital is at the forefront of cancer research and treatment, and plays a critical role both nationally and globally in scientific and clinical expertise, development and training. Another Dutch health star is the Sanquin Blood Supply Foundation, which is responsible for coordinating safe and efficient blood supply in the country on a not-for-profit basis. Established in 1998, Sanquin conducts scientific investigations and provides education, instruction, in-service training and refresher courses. The organisation also ensures constancy in the Dutch blood supply by ensuring that the 10% of donors who become unavailable due to age, pregnancy, illness or relocation are replaced. Let’s take a look at some of the city’s socially-oriented endeavours that are creating better lives for communities in Amsterdam and far beyond: 1. Tackling youth obesity The best minds in scientific research, government and the private sector have joined forces in the crossdisciplinary Sarphati Institute to promote public health. The institute makes local children the focus of cutting-edge research on lifestyle-related diseases – predominantly obesity – and is a partner in Amsterdam’s healthy weight programme. This programme encourages children to drink only tap water at school, and explores possibilities with planners for a ‘healthy city’ that, by design, invites children and adults to walk, run and cycle on a daily basis. The first results seem promising: the number of overweight children in the city has decreased by 12% over the past three years. 2. Affordable care for everyone People are living longer than ever these days, and this longevity means that they are taking larger numbers of expensive medicines during their lives. To keep their patients from going bankrupt, healthcare professionals increasingly prescribe ‘generic’ medicines, which offer the same health benefits as brand names at a fraction of the original price. As the patent no longer applies to these prescription drugs, other phar-

maceutical companies are free to manufacture them. Sun Pharma – a cutting-edge Indian company that is making medicines more accessible to people around the world – is carrying out this mission from its base in Amsterdam. The company also takes its social responsibility seriously, investing in education, water, the environment and disaster relief around the world. 3. Collective cooking One of the plethora of Amsterdam-based social enterprises that focus on healthier lifestyles, the Robin Food cooking collective stands up for less affluent Amsterdammers who want to eat healthily. The collective provides three delicious courses of “healthy and honest food, sometimes saved from the dumpster, once in a while raw, always vegetarian, and mostly organic” for a social price of €10. The kitchen is open to “chefs and outlaws” who enjoy cooking together, learning from each other and taking part in the Dutch battle against food waste. 4. Keeping an eye on medicines The region’s position as a hub for life sciences will be boosted by the relocation of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) from London to Amsterdam in 2019. As one of the EU’s most important agencies, the EMA is responsible for the scientific supervision, evaluation and safety monitoring of medicines in the European Union. The relocation is a result of the UK’s withdrawal from the EU, and Amsterdam was chosen by the 27 member states that will remain in the union. 5. Coordinating Amsterdam health Amsterdam Health is a platform that aims to “grow the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area into one of the healthiest regions in the world.” Initiated by the Amsterdam Economic Board, this online community brings together commercial, academic and publicsector parties in order to strengthen knowledge sharing and showcase health initiatives. The platform includes upcoming health-related conferences and meet-ups, and a discussion forum covering all kinds of health-related issues.

RAI Events Amsterdam

Inspiring people

RAI Amsterdam Healthy environment RAI Amsterdam’s central location, just 14 minutes by public transport from the city centre, makes it unique among convention centres in Europe and is much appreciated by (international) clients and guests. At the same time, RAI Amsterdam realises that it also has an impact on the surrounding areas. By entering into a dialogue with our neighbours we are looking for ways in which our facilities can contribute to the wellbeing of the Amsterdam South district. For example, the variety of sports classes and workout sessions held on our premises in the evenings brings a whole new dynamic to RAI Amsterdam. Sustainable, fresh and healthy catering Responsible and healthy catering is important for our organisers and visitors. Therefore, we use daily fresh, sustainable and tasty ingredients for our catering. To achieve this we support organic agriculture, urban greenhouses and dairy farms in the Amsterdam region. To work with local, high-quality, authentic produce is inspiring. And it tastes and feels better. That’s why we call it ‘Heartwarming Amsterdam’.

Grachtenfestival The magnificent Grachtenfestival (Canal Festival), held annually in August on and around Amsterdam’s canals, is one of the cultural highlights of the Amsterdam summer. The historic canal belt of Amsterdam, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2010, hosts the ten-day festival of classical and contemporary music at numerous beautiful locations. In 2018, the Grachtenfestival will take place from 10-19 August and will feature 250 concerts at 90 different outdoor locations. Musicians perform on specially-constructed pontoons, and the audience listens from bridges, canal sides and boats. One of the annual highlights is the Prinsengracht Concert, which takes place in front of the Pulitzer Hotel and is broadcast live on Dutch television. The Grachtenfestival also traditionally provides a stage for talented young musicians, giving them a boost in their musical careers. In the run-up to the festival, a Conservatorium Concours is held in which young musicians get the chance to present their ideas to a professional jury. The winners are in turn invited to perform at the Grachtenfestival. The theme in 2018 is ‘Closer to Music’, and local Amsterdammers were invited to propose ideas for four different neighbourhood concerts during this year’s festival. These concerts will be free for the neighbourhood, and will take place on local squares or streets around the city.

Worth a visit Maria Austria Photograpy Exhibition

Leonardo Da Vinci in the Netherlands

The Living for Photography exhibition, highlighting the work of the Jewish photographer Maria Austria, will be on display at the Jewish Historical Museum until 2 September. This is the first time that Austria’s extensive and versatile oeuvre, spanning the period between 1930 and 1975, is on display as a whole.

Teylers Museum, located just a short train ride away from Amsterdam in the charming city of Haarlem, will open the Netherlands’ first-ever exhibition of Leonardo da Vinci’s work in the autumn of 2018. In recent years, Teylers has curated high-profile exhibits featuring Michelangelo and Rafael, and its longstanding dream of bringing together some of Leonardo’s masterpieces will now be fulfilled. The works have been borrowed from various collections, including the National Museum in Budapest, the Albertina in Vienna, the Paris Louvre, and even from the Queen of England.

Maria Austria was born in Carlsbad, Austria, in 1915. She studied photography in Vienna, but emigrated to Amsterdam in 1937 due to the increasing anti-Semitism in her home country. She managed to escape deportation to Westerbork in 1942, and joined Amsterdam’s underground resistance. She later became known for her social documentary photo reportages on the reconstruction of the Netherlands in the post-war decades, as well as innovative photos of the experimental and avant-garde theatre of the 1960s and 1970s. The comprehensive Living for Photography retrospective also includes many previously unknown works that have recently come to light. Among these is a profound series of 150 shots of the abandoned, dilapidated Achterhuis (Hiding Place) where Anne Frank spent her final years, photographed in 1954 following the request of Anne’s father, Otto. The common thread in the exhibition is humankind: Austria was a photographer of people, and depicting their emotions and experiences was key to her work. In addition to more than 250 photographs, the exhibit also contains newspapers, magazines, books and personal documents.

I

In the 15th century, Da Vinci’s ability to capture human emotions in his paintings and sketches was considered revolutionary (the enigmatic painting of Mona Lisa, which hangs in the Louvre, is the best known example). The Teylers exhibit will provide the visitor with many sublime examples of Leonardo’s trailblazing accomplishments. Although the renowned The Last Supper fresco will not be exhibited due to its permanent location in Milan, the museum promises that the work “will be present at the exhibition in its original size in a very special way”. After you’ve been inspired by Leonardo’s genius, wander around the rest of Teylers to admire the eclectic collections of interesting scientific and artistic objects: machines, fossils, minerals, books, coins, medals, instruments, and art by Dutch Masters to name just a few.
