Take for example AIDS 2018, which brought together some 18,000 global leaders, policymakers, researchers and advocates in July for a week of ground-breaking progress towards eradicating HIV/AIDS. Amsterdam, renowned as one of the world’s most tolerant cities and an early responder in tackling the crisis, was the ideal venue for this largest-ever gathering on global health. Read about the inspiring outcomes on page 18. Amsterdam is rightfully proud of its artistic and cultural heritage, and is planning a extensive programme to mark the 350th birthday of the iconic Golden Age artist Rembrandt van Rijn. Read about the myriad of festivities connected with Rembrandt 2019 in Amsterdam and beyond on pages 24-26. We also take a look at some of the city’s innovative approaches to transport within the increasingly congested streets of its historic centre. Imagine for example an autonomous delivery barge floating down one of the canals, with its human ‘driver’ delivering packages on foot. Innovations like this will be crucial in meeting Amsterdam’s goal of becoming emissions-free by 2025. Read more about the city’s Smart Mobility Action Plan on page 8. The summer of 2018 also saw the opening of the eagerly awaited new metro line, which transports passengers between the North and South of the city in just 15 minutes. In keeping with the city’s artistic past, the new stations are decorated with a series of striking public artworks, which you can find out more about on page 19. This issue also profiles some of the most exclusive and luxurious restaurants and hotels on offer in the city (see page 4 and 20). Let the metro bring you to buzzing Amsterdam South, or use the good old-fashioned bicycle to bring you to some of the choice destinations in Amsterdam West. Finally I am very happy to introduce our new MICE Director Claudia Wehmeijer who will be, as of January 2019, the face and ambassador of our MICE team, a joint effort of Amsterdam Marketing and the Department of Economics Affairs of the City of Amsterdam. Kind regards, Frans van der Avert CEO Amsterdam Marketing

‘It’s silly only to look at the city if we have 400,000 people commuting in the Amsterdam Area every day‘

Smart urban freight One out of every six vehicles in the city is used for urban freight, 80% of which are light vehicles, including electric cargo bikes. Although a cleaner, smaller alternative to heavy trucks, the light vehicles can’t travel as far as traditional diesel vans. Enter the oftenmobile ‘micro hub’, where goods to be delivered can be stored until picked up by a light vehicle that then transports them easily through the city’s streets. Information is linked in this entire delivery chain, making for ‘first and last mile efficiency’. Dutch postal service PostNLhas been using such an emissions-free electric cargo bike  since last year, while Dutch grocery delivery startup Picnic  built its own electric vans to deliver its goods. Groceries are ordered via a smart app, with distribution costs so low that delivery from this fast-growing online sustainable supermarket is free.

10 MICEdition Winter 2018

Imagine this: A delivery truck cruises slowly down the Prinsengracht, unmanned, its ‘driver’ walking alongside it, depositing parcels as they go, without constantly stopping and blocking traffic while searching for packages that need delivering. It may sound like the stuff of science fiction, but as Amsterdam gears up to test its first autonomous vehicles within the next two years, it’s just one smart solution the city is experimenting with to keep things moving in an increasingly crowdedurban landscape. LEADERSHIP IN SMART MOBILITY ‘We want to be a leader in smart mobility,’ says Lizann Tjon, Programme Manager of Smart Mobility for the City of Amsterdam. ‘Some cities only focus on cars. For us, it’s a bigger ecosystem.’ That bigger ecosystem encompasses everything that moves, from cars, bicycles and public transport to commuters, tourists and concertgoers. ‘Smart mobility is connected to everything,’ says Tjon. ‘This is the future.’ The city has come up with a Smart Mobility Action Plan that seeks to ‘improve the safety, accessibility, air quality, quality of life, and attractiveness of Amsterdam.’ And it’s partnered with universities, colleges and businesses to meet those goals. Indeed as big data keeps getting bigger, the city is learning how to apply it in ways that weren’t even possible just a few years ago. Take the Amsterdam Practical Trial (APT) – a joint initiative of municipal, provincial and national governments that has been conducting wide-scale pilots in Amsterdam and the Amsterdam Area to improve the flow of traffic. By using the latest technology both in cars and on the road, APT manages traffic while turning mobility into a custom-made affair. ‘For the first time, the different levels of government have standardised the data so companies like Google and TomTom can enrich it,’ says Walther Ploos van Amstel, lecturer of city logistics at Amsterdam

Mobility as a service Amsterdam has its share of smart parking solutions. Mobypark , the Airbnb of parking, links up people seeking spots with those who want to rent theirs out, while Dutch startupParkBee  converts idle private car parks into income-generating paid parking spaces for the public via the Parkmobile and Park-line apps. But with 40% of Amsterdammers and 80% of the Amsterdam Area‘s residents owning cars, the city’s smart mobility experts want to see an increase in car sharing instead, where mobility is a service. ‘Self-driving cars play a role in the change of mindset necessary to go from a private to a shared car,’ says the city’s Lizann Tjon. Until then, there are a host of car-sharing options, including peerto-peer startup Snappcar , which lets individuals rent out their cars to others in another Airbnb-based model.

University for Applied Sciences. ‘Based on this real-time data, you get predictive models, so we can advise people where to go and when.’

waste or even act as temporary floating structures such as bridges or stages.

PILOTS IN PRACTICE The pilots have proven successful in the ArenAPoort area, where Ajax football matches and big name concerts at the Ziggo Dome and AFAS Live venues can see the area’s population more than double on any given weekend. The individual advice that drivers or public transportation users receive via their favourite phone apps – such as what train to take and how long the wait, where to park and how to pay – is not only unique, says Ploos van Amstel, but has reduced congestion around the ArenA by 75%. ‘Smart mobility is all about linking information in the mobility chain to make mobility more sustainable and cost-efficient,’ he says. ‘We’re testing it for crowd control, too, over the big holidays such as King’s Day and events like Gay Pride.’ Next up? Using the technology to help commuters in the Amsterdam Area. ‘It’s silly only to look at the city if we have 400,000 people commuting in the Amsterdam Area every day,’ says Ploos van Amstel. But it’s not just on land where smart mobility is making waves. The Port of Amsterdam , Europe’s fourth busiest, is using and testing aquatic drones to inspect the area with the goal of making it ‘smarter, safer, cleaner and faster,’ says Joost Zuidema, Researcher Strategy and Innovation at Port of Amsterdam. ‘Autonomous vessels will play a huge role in the port of the future.’ And while autonomous ships are still in the development phase there, self-driving boats are already cruising along Amsterdam’s less congested canals: The AMS Institute’s Roboat can be used to ferry freight and people, test water quality, remove

THE AIRPORT OF THE FUTURE When it comes to the skies, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol ‘wants to be the e-commerce gateway of Europe,’ says Olav Steffers, Director of Foreign Investments at the Schiphol Area Development Company (SADC) . The Schiphol area’s many logistics service providers want more control over the supply chain, and the Amsterdam Area offers a unique digital infrastructure with data centres to do it. ‘For us, smart mobility means optimising the supply chain in terms of logistics,’ says Steffers, ‘and the connectivity gives logistics companies the opportunity to build control towers to monitor the IT systems of everyone in their supply chain.’ Schiphol’s aim to become one of the most sustainable airports in the world includes an emphasis on electric transport, while Amsterdam has set itself the goal of becoming emissions-free by 2025. It will take longer than that to bring 21st-century smart technology to Amsterdam’s 17th-century streets as far as autonomous vehicles are concerned. But as the city expands over the next decade in places including IJburg 2, the Haven-Stad, and Overhoeks in Amsterdam Noord, Ploos van Amstel says it should make the new areas ‘future-ready’ for the autonomous vehicles that will follow sooner rather than later.

AIDS 2018, which united 16,000 guests from around the world at RAI Amsterdam in July, was an enormous success. Visitors and locals were welcomed to the conference by enormous red ribbons decorating the Magere Brug (Skinny Bridge) over the Amstel River, symbolising the city’s progressive role in the fight against HIV and AIDS. Local NGOs, advocacy groups and art institutions hosted a number of oneof-a-kind events like the Positive Flame Tour during which 37 torchbearers marched through the city; a pop-up safe sex shop in the Red Light District; a Sex Worker’s Opera; and special art exhibitions on the history of HIV and AIDS. During the event, the Dutch government announced that it would set aside €10 million for a special HIV prevention fund and to make antiviral drugs more accessible for vulnerable groups. In 2018, the country will also spend around €430 million to protect sexual and reproductive rights in developing countries. In addition to the researchers, medical professionals and policymakers who are at the core of the campaign to eradicate AIDS, special guests in Amsterdam included actress Charlize Theron, singer Elton John, former US president Bill Clinton, Eurovision winner Conchita, and Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex from the UK.

A ten-kilometre route passing under central Amsterdam, the new line transports passengers between the North and South of the city in just 15 minutes. It is anticipated that some 14 million passengers will use the service each year. In keeping with the city's artistic temperament, a series of public artworks festoon the new metro stations. Central Station boasts a piece made of 100,000 dried tulips as well as a massive video projection called The Weather Engine; film noir-style photographs decorate the Europaplein stop; and at Station Noord passengers wait upon floor drawings inspired by the threatened biodiversity in the surrounding area. Some 10,000 of the archaeological treasures discovered during the dig – including coins, weapons, clothing and tableware – are displayed in glass cases at the Rokin stop.

The History of Amsterdam as a Source of Inspiration Designed by Rem Koolhaas / OMA, the building was inspired by one of RAI Amsterdam’s most iconic features, the advertising column known as Het Signaal. Consisting of three superposed triangles, the building points in many directions, symbolising the diversity that characterises the past, present and future of the city of Amsterdam. The room designs are inspired by the six cardinal directions to which the building’s corners point: South, East, North, South-West, South-East and North-West. International symbols – such as mandalas from India, Mexican Día de Muertos skulls, or cherry blossoms from Japan, for example – are arranged in a modern international setting.

Zelfportret, Rembrandt van Rijn, ca. 1628

2019: the Year of Rembrandt Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (15 July 1606 - 4 October 1669) is generally considered to be one of the greatest painters and printmakers of the 17th century. Throughout his life he created some 300 paintings, 300 etchings and 2,000 drawings. His extraordinary ability to capture the effects of light and shadow, often resulting in stark contrasts, made it possible for him to create captivating and dramatic scenes. Rembrandt achieved youthful success as a portrait painter, and his self-portraits form a unique and intimate biography. His wife Saskia van Uylenburgh and his son Titus van Rijn were often used as models for the biblical, mythological and historical figures that populate his work. Although his later years were marked by personal tragedy and financial hardship, Rembrandt's etchings and paintings were popular throughout his lifetime. He also taught many important Dutch painters in his studio, including Govert Flinck and Ferdinand Bol. 2019 marks the 350th anniversary of Rembrandt van Rijn’s death. In celebration, special events focusing on the life and work of this remarkable Golden Age painter will take place in Amsterdam and beyond. REMBRANDT FESTIVITIES IN AMSTERDAM The anniversary celebrations were kicked off at Uitmarkt, the opening of Amsterdam’s cultural season, in August 2018. Among the highlights

were Strike A Pose!, a giant photo booth where visitors could don a historical costume and become a character in a 3-D version of one of Rembrandt’s famous works. In 2019, the Rijksmuseum, which boasts the world’s greatest Rembrandt collection, will present two major exhibits highlighting the artist and his work. From 15 February to 10 June, the entire collection will be on display for the first time ever in the exhibition All the Rembrandts of the Rijksmuseum. Twenty-two paintings, 60 drawings and 300 prints will showcase the master’s phenomenal technique and innovative applications, and will also give visitors an insight into Rembrandt, the man. From 11 October onwards, the museum will present a second exhibition in collaboration with Madrid’s Museu del Prado: RembrandtVelázquez. This comprehensive overview of paintings by the two great masters of the 17th century will feature extraordinary works rooted in realism and religion. Although Rembrandt and Velázquez were contemporaries and made use of similar techniques and styles, their backgrounds, cultures and beliefs were very different. The Rijksmuseum will also offer special tours to bring you closer to the painter’s genius: walk around with an expert guide or immerse MICEdition Winter 2018 25

yourself in a self-guided tour with the free museum app. The museum will also map out special walking, bicycle and canal boat routes through Amsterdam, connecting places where the artist lived and worked. Events dedicated to Rembrandt – including lectures, musical performances, drawing activities, and afterhours openings of the exhibitions – will also be offered.

Of course, the Rembrandt House Museum – the artist’s former home and workshop in Amsterdam – will also stage a varied programme of exhibitions to mark the anniversary. Four special exhibitions will be on display: Rembrandt’s Social Network (1 February 19 May), Inspired by Rembrandt (7 June - 1 September) and Laboratory Rembrandt (21 September onwards). REMBRANDT BEYOND AMSTERDAM Other Dutch cities will also join in the Rembrandt celebrations. In The Hague’s Mauritshuis museum, the Rembrandt and the Mauritshuis exhibition from 31 January to 15 September will showcase a selection of Rembrandt's masterpieces. Renowned paintings including The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Nicolaes Tulp will be displayed alongside paintings that

are no longer considered to be created by Rembrandt in order to show shifting perceptions throughout the centuries. The Fries Museum in Leeuwarden will host an exhibition entitled Rembrandt & Saskia: Love and Marriage in the Golden Age from 24 November 2018 until 17 March 2019. Wedding portraits, intimate sketches and personal objects will illuminate love and suffering in the Golden Age: from courtship to fairy-tale weddings and from starting a family to the darker sides of life including child mortality and adultery. A major exhibition, Young Rembrandt, will also take place as of 3 November at the Lakenhal Museum in Leiden, where Rembrandt had a studio in his early years. Many of the artist’s works dating from his Leiden period will be shown, including the Brillenverkoper (A Pedlar Selling Spectacles), his oldest-known painting. Visitors can also visit Rembrandt's birthplace, school, university and the workshop where he first learned to paint under the tutelage of Jacob van Swanenburgh. What’s more, on 15 July – Rembrandt's birthday – thousands of people will gather in the form of a massive Rembrandt self-portrait that will be filmed from the air.

Amsterdam Light Festival The seventh edition of Amsterdam Light Festival sees 30 spectacular artworks and installations by Dutch and international artists – including Amsterdam-based Jeroen Henneman – light up Amsterdam’s historic Canal Ring, the River Amstel and other special locations. This year’s theme is ‘The Medium is the Message’, the famous statement by Canadian scientist Marshall McLuhan which highlights that the medium with which we send a message is more important than the message itself. Therefore, the role of light in conveying a message and the city of Amsterdam as a medium for telling stories are central to this edition. Curated by Lennart Booij, Amsterdam Light Festival can be viewed in two ways – on boats via the dynamic Water Colors route along Amsterdam’s famous canals, or via your own route on foot / by bike. Guided tours are also available, as is an extensive side-programme of activities and events taking place at museums, theatres, restaurants, shops and other locations in the city. Worth a visit Rembrandt 2019

Keukenhof

2019 marks 350 years since the death of one of the Netherlands’ most esteemed painters, Rembrandt van Rijn. To honour the life and work of this remarkable Dutch Golden Age painter and the influence his masterpieces continue to have on the art world, cultural spaces across the country are taking part in a special celebration, ‘Rembrandt and the Dutch Golden Age’ throughout the year, with a series of exhibitions and events that showcase Rembrandt’s artworks and delve into the artist’s mind. The following will take place in Amsterdam:

No trip to the Netherlands would be complete without a visit to what is known as the most beautiful spring garden in the world: Keukenhof. Each year, the Keukenhof Gardens in Lisse come alive as 7 million flower bulbs in every colour of the rainbow blossom over 32 hectares. This glorious celebration of the Netherlands’ world-famous flower history takes place over an eight-week period that ties in with the tulip’s national flowering season. The stars of the show are naturally the stunning blooms that cover the park, but there are also flower shows, inspirational gardens, unique art, wonderful events and the Tulpomania (Tulip Mania) exhibition at the Juliana Pavilion to enjoy.
