Science that saves lives How the Amsterdam Area’s remarkable ecosystem helps its Life Sciences & Health cluster to the world top – and its plans for extending its residents’ lives by two years. text Hans Kopps

17

Newcomers

In November 2018, US-based Alnylam Pharmaceuticals announced it was expanding its operations in the Netherlands by opening new offices in the Amsterdam Area. The world leader in RNAinterference therapeutics for genetically-defined diseases chose its location after careful deliberations, says CEO Barry Greene. ‘This is a testimony to the country’s vibrant biotech ecosystem and to its attractive environment, which makes it possible for companies with groundbreaking innovation to flourish.’ Start-up 3EGA also has plans to flourish. The company has found its way to the investment and business networks needed to realise its groundbreaking ideas for a depression-treating methodology. 3EGA aims to help therapists with early identification of psychological disorders and in making evidence-based decisions in medication management. According to Milena Cukic, founder and owner, her company’s success was helped by the support of the Amsterdam Health and Technology Institute and the HealthInc programme, an accelerator for early-stage HealthTech start-ups. ’I think we will get there, it simply takes time,’ she says.

18

The scale-up of Kite Pharma is a prime example of how the ecosystem of the Life Sciences and Health sector (LSH) in the Amsterdam Area helps a company grow and flourish faster than expected. The daughter of California-based biopharma giant Gilead Sciences decided four years ago to set up a research team of immunotherapy specialists in Amsterdam Science Park, chosen for its rare combination of affordable office space, start-ups in bioscience, e-health and deep learning, and easy access to the wet labs and other essential research facilities of the nearby University of Amsterdam medical campus. In the years since, the team has made a breakthrough in cancer research, with the Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI) as one of its promoters. Kite Pharma’s T-cell immunotherapy reprogrammes the immune cells of cancer patients to recognise cancer cells and eliminate them. Kite Pharma is also investing in a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility for its cancer cell therapies at SEGRO Park Amsterdam Airport in Hoofddorp. When announcing the investment, Gilead’s CEO at the time, John Milligan, said: ‘This facility will enable us to manufacture personalised cell therapies close to the patients who will receive them, potentially shortening the turnaround time for people who urgently need care.’ What started as a research project in Amsterdam Science Park will by 2020 evolve into a 117,000 m2 high-biotech production facility, creating 300-plus jobs and making the developed immunotherapy available to cancer patients around the world. Flourish indeed. STANDING OUT The ecosystem of life sciences and health-related activities in and around the Amsterdam Area is vibrant and remarkable in numerous ways. But it most stands out compared to the other 230 LSH-clusters worldwide because of its high degree of interconnectivity and its low thresholds. There are some 300 companies in the Amsterdam Area involved in a wide variety of health-improving activities, including med-tech manufacturers Stryker Corporation and Philips, and (bio)pharmaceutical brands Novartis and Genzyme. Pioneers in e-health applications, such as Castor EDC, gather in one of the region’s four science parks designed to facilitate their scale-up, with a network of

service providers that grows with the ecosystem in size, number and professionalism. Although their business perspectives differ, all are drawn to the region’s superior infrastructure – both physical and digital – an international-oriented talent pool and relatively easy access to both a rich source of independent scientific research and public medical data. ‘THE AMSTERDAM AREA’S There are two ECOSYSTEM OF LIFE academic medical centres, which SCIENCES AND HEALTHhave merged to RELATED ACTIVITIES IS VIBRANT AND REMARKABLE’ form Amsterdam UMC, and a specialised cancer research institute (NKI/ Antoni van Leeuwenhoek) within a five-mile radius from the heart of the capital. Together, they produce the third-largest health-related scientific output in the world, in addition to the necessary patient data for clinical and bio-medical research. CLOSE TO THE GATEKEEPER By the end of 2018, the ecosystem was given an extra boost when the European Medicines Agency (EMA) moved from London to Amsterdam following the UK’s decision to leave

the EU. The EMA does roughly for continental Europe what the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) does for the US: It decides whether new medicines and therapies should be allowed access to European markets, and supports health-related developments and innovations. That the EMA is located on the doorstep of the LSH-cluster means the complex approval process for new medicines and therapies can be observed, and guided if needed, from close by. This has the potential to considerably shorten the time to market for new products and treatments, and it is a proven nucleus for new activities. ‘Many companies like to have offices close to us,’ says EMA’s Executive Director Professor Guido Rasi. ‘It happened in London, and it will happen in Amsterdam, too.’ Professor Rasi’s prediction is proving true. Following EMA’s announcement that it would set up shop in Amsterdam, legal firm Bird & Bird opened an affiliate in Amsterdam’s Zuidas business district, where EMA will be located when its permanent home is completed at the end of 2019. As a specialist in patent rights, Bird & Bird wants to be close to the gatekeeper of European markets.

19

Professors Guus van Dongen and Bert Windhorst

life sciences and health

Pharmaceuticals firm Novartis is also moving its Dutch operations to the Amsterdam Area in EMA’s wake. LOW TRESHOLDS Another competitive advantage of the Amsterdam Area ecosystem is its accessibility, as seen in the creation of the Amsterdam UMC Imaging Center. Professors Guus van Dongen and Bert Windhorst, renowned specialists in radiology and ‘THE AMSTERDAM AREA nuclear medicine, have IS ONE OF THE WORLDʻS brought together every known cutting-edge MOST ATTRACTIVE imaging technique LOCATIONS FOR LSH to one location on ORGANISATIONS’ the Amsterdam UMC Medical Center’s campus. This shortens the waiting time for patients in need of MRI-, CT- or PET-scans and improves the quality of medical diagnoses; it also enables attending physicians to observe the effects treatments

20

have on patients in real time – a big step up for healthcare in Europe. In doing so, they’ve also created a unique lab allowing pharmaceutical and biopharma companies to reduce their research time while cutting costs. ‘Using our imaging facilities, by far the most sophisticated in Europe, makes it possible for them to establish at an early stage whether a newly-developed medicine or treatment is doing what it is expected to do, and especially, what it is not supposed to do,’ explain Windhorst and Van Dongen. ‘Knowing this shortens the expensive development process by at least half a year, reducing costs considerably.’ It is essential for the Amsterdam UMC Imaging Center to cooperate closely with companies interested in using its facilities. The contributions of these commercial partners are vital to making the expensive project feasible in the long term. And their numbers are growing.

The Rotterdam Connection

BIRTHDAY GIFT Being among the world’s top five most attractive locations for LSH organisations also brings new challenges. In order to keep pace with competing top-ranking clusters in places such as Cambridge, UK, or Boston in the US, an action plan for future next steps was drawn up under the supervision of the Amsterdam Economic Board – the agency tasked with strengthening collaborations between businesses, knowledge institutes and government organisations – and a committee hosted by former minister and UMC chairman Wouter Bos, who now heads the government’s new development and investment institution Invest-NL. And its ambitions are high. Amsterdam celebrates its 750th birthday in 2025, and as a birthday gift to its inhabitants, city officials want to extend the average life expectancy of all their residents by two years. But it needs the help of local life sciences and health companies to meet its goal . ‘We add a new dimension by combining the strength of our data science cluster with that of the LSH ecosystem,’ says Jeroen Maas of the Amsterdam Economic Board. ‘The future is in preci‘THE AMSTERDAM AREA sion health. This demands a close collaboration between REMAINS A WORLD the two. Applications based LEADER IN INNOVATIVE on artificial intelligence MEDICINES AND (AI) and deep learning will TREATMENTS’ change the world of both cure and care immensely by setting new standards for both health prevention and clinical and pharmaceutical treatments to be customised for individual patients. We want to create business examples of the successful integration of data and medical science here.’ The Amsterdam Area already has all the key elements needed, and they’re only growing. The region has a strong track record in data collection, machine learning and data ethics. And as home to one of the busiest Internet crossroads in the world, global connectivity is practically guaranteed. Happy birthday, Amsterdam!

Neighbouring the Amsterdam Area’s ecosystem is the Amsterdam-Rotterdam LSH cluster. GE Healthcare opened a representative office at Cambridge Innovation Center Rotterdam, in the former Groot Handelsgebouw. ‘We want to get closer to our key customers, one of which is Erasmus Medical Center,’ explains Country Imaging Sales Manager Jawad Handizi. ‘We have 10 MRs installed [there] and a high-end cyclotron. If needed, I can just hop on my bike and cycle over to be with them now. Besides, we have developed a close partnership that enables us to innovate based on their broad clinical experience.’ Another advantage of being part of the Rotterdam-extension of the Dutch LSH-cluster is that Handizi and his colleagues get the opportunity to meet potential future partners who excel in artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning. ‘As a med-tech manufacturer, GE Healthcare is based on three pillars: Diagnostics, therapeutics and monitoring,’ he says. ‘The next generations of these appliances will be powered by AI, and machine and deep learning. It is important to be challenged in these fields. And since there are over 250 start-ups around us, this is where that happens.’ Many can also be found in the nearby Leiden Bio Science Park.

KIT Royal Tropical Institute CGR-Approved for Pharmaceutical Events! A pharmaceutical event at the KIT Royal Tropical Institute? Hell yes! In the Netherlands and abroad, specific rules apply for pharmaceutical advertising. KIT is proud to announce that the Foundation for the Code for Pharmaceutical Advertising (CGR) has now approved this royal location – which has been housed in a monumental building on Mauritskade, Amsterdam since 1926 – for events organised by the pharmaceutical industry. The approval was motivated by the fact that KIT invests profits from such pharma-related events in sustainability and health-care projects around the world. So, from now on, KIT is the venue of choice for medical-, pharmaceutical- and healthrelated meetings! ‘This is very good news for all parties involved, wherever they are in the world,‘ says Joost Mallo, account manager at KIT. ‘It means that the pharmaceutical industry can organise its events at KIT entirely in compliance with their policy rules, and that the industry is able to sponsor medical projects at our location. They realise innovative and practical solutions in the field of health care in low- and middleincome countries.‘ For several recent health-related conferences, KIT Royal Tropical Institute invited these experts to share their knowledge and experience with the audiences. ‘It was highly appreciated, if we go by the volume of the applause!‘ says Mallo. ‘In addition, there is the KIT Scholarship Fund, with which about 40 talented professionals from low-income countries are able to make a positive contribution to local health care through a master’s programme.‘

Schiphol scores high in connection

Formula 1 at Amsterdam Beach

A day at the beach will be even more exciting when the roaring engines, screeching tyres and cheering crowds of the Formula 1 races return to Zandvoort for the first time since 1985! The coastal village of Zandvoort, known for its sandy dunes and wide beaches, will host the Formula 1 Heineken Dutch Grand Prix 2020 from 30 April until 3 May. The racing successes of the talented young Dutch Formula 1 race driver Max Verstappen have led to a resurgence of interest in the races in the Netherlands in recent years. The legendary circuit at Zandvoort – just a stone’s throw from the surf – is known for its fast, banked and challenging corners shaped by the contours of the surrounding dunes. The circuit, first used for Formula 1 in 1949, is being modernised to meet Formula 1 standards for World Championship events without losing its unique character. dutchgp.com/en

Amsterdam’s Schiphol is ranked the second most-connected airport in the world, according to the Airport Industry Connectivity Report 2018. Connectivity is a composite measure of the number of destinations, the frequency of services and the quality of connections. The Netherlands is directly connected with 327 destinations in 98 countries via Schiphol Airport.

Amsterdome

From Europe’s first geodesic dome in 1971 to the Netherlands’ first circular event location in 2018: Amsterdome has a history that’s as iconic as its design. Rebuilt piece by original piece using modern tools and techniques, this impressive 5,000m2 space has been given a second, contemporary life. With a bright foyer, pavilion, multifunctional 10m-high plenary hall for 200 to 1,000 people, and 16 flexible breakout rooms, Amsterdome has everything for a successful and inspiring event. Sustainability also plays a vital role: its interior is made almost entirely of recycled materials, it’s heated and cooled using geothermal energy, and the dome is equipped with high-insulation glass. amsterdome.com

The dizzying array that Amsterdam has to offer is right at your fingertips in every copy of the I amsterdam Magazine, the city’s go-to guide with insider tips covering music, theatre, clubbing, exhibitions, LGBT events, festivals, dining out and other happenings around town. The magazine aims to tempt visitors off the beaten path and deep into Amsterdam’s diverse and lesser-known areas so they can enjoy the rich experiences to be found beyond the famous canals of the city centre. I amsterdam Magazine is published by amsterdam& partners four times a year, to cover each of the seasons. With a circulation of 70,000, the magazine can be provided upon request to conference delegates. The magazine can be requested via meetings@iamsterdam.com

GreenEvents Finance Centre

RAI Amsterdam Convention Centre

The latest Global Green Finance Index recognised Amsterdam as one of the world’s leading centres for green finance due to the city’s role in cutting greenhouse gas emissions and combating climate change. The partnership between the city’s central government and its financial services sector has resulted in a range of projects and programmes designed to enhance resilience and cut emissions.

EAU 2020 From 20 to 24 March 2020, the 35th edition of the renowned Annual European Association of Urology’s (EAU) Congress will come to Amsterdam. EAU is globally known for its training, research and information in the field of urology. Its scientific publications encourage discussion and its expert recommendations guide urologists in their everyday practices.

& Green Capital

Amsterdam is also one of Europe’s greenest capitals. Price comparison website Compare the Market evaluated 25 cities based on 10 factors, including air pollution levels, quality of life and CO2 emissions. Amsterdam came in sixth, with its extensive network of cycle paths and low levels of traffic congestion playing a huge role.

Hosted at the RAI Amsterdam Convention Centre, EAU 2020 will be Europe’s largest annual event showcasing the latest and most relevant science in the urological field. Specialists and affiliated medical professionals will gather for a critical assessment of clinical practices and key research developments in areas including oncology, reconstruction urology, paediatrics, female urology and neuro-urology, among many others.

The congress will present the latest in science and education in various formats to suit the needs of all participants, including challenging state-of-the-art lectures, fascinating HD-video surgery sessions, skills-boosting hands-on training and practiceoriented courses. The event will bring together thousands of delegates and exhibitors from over 125 countries, and an expected 13,000 medical experts. eau-2020.com

Power City

Business is booming and Amsterdam’s economic success is attracting new residents from around the globe. The latest Global Power City Index (GPCI), which ranks a city’s ‘magnetism’ based on factors such as its economy, liveability, accessibility and R&D, ranked Amsterdam sixth in the world (up from seventh place in 2017), behind New York, London and Tokyo. This is quite an impressive feat for a midsize city!

Column

Bringing together hearts & minds In August 2019, I visited the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Congress in Paris. Some 30,000 cardiologists had gathered at the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles to learn, exchange knowledge and monitor developments in the field. At the request of the ESC, we nominated the Amsterdam cardiologist Prof. Dr. Van Rossum as an expert for Heart Healthy Cities, an initiative focusing on tackling heart disease in urban areas. And we took the opportunity to welcome the conference attendees to Amsterdam in 2020. That is because the ESC Congress will take place in Amsterdam next year. And we’ve already started the preparations. For the public event – to increase awareness and knowledge among Amsterdammers about heart disease – we will meet with the Hartstichting (Heart Foundation), the Dutch Association of Cardiologists, the Municipal Health Service (GGD) and the municipality of Amsterdam, among others. Together, we want to establish a common goal: for example, by teaching resuscitation skills to the public or by providing information about lifestyle. It’s great how enthusiastic the parties already are! This is truly an excellent example of what we, as a convention bureau, stand for and can do. In our role as the single point of entry. As an independent party. We can connect people, bring different parties together, hook partners up, advise and facilitate... Thus, we can offer real added value to the ESC Congress and, in turn, the Congress can give something beautiful back to the city and its residents. That’s truly heartwarming, isn’t it? House of Watt Work – Eat – Play

In the East Side of the city, within walking distance of Amsterdam Amstel station and the A10 motorway, you will find a venue that can truly be described as an ‘Odd One Out’. Situated in a former hotel lobby, the high ceilings combined with a warm interior will give you that ‘feel at home’ vibe straight away.

At House of Watt we believe in a thin line between Work, Eat and Play – where your meeting can be complemented with a tailor-made pub quiz, or your corporate event ends with a volleyball match. And have you ever thought of combining your annual sales meeting with a BBQ and a smashing karaoke night?

We do things our way – focusing on real personal service rather than on superficial looks. Where food plays an important role in your event and where we always think of a creative way to turn your meeting into a fun and effective gathering.

With seven meeting rooms, a large café, a small theatre and an extensive terrace, House of Watt will easily meet your expectations. Besides an event location we are also open daily for breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks. So please stop by anytime.

Connectivity Amsterdam is well-equipped with a public transport network of trams, buses, metro and ferries operated by GVB (gvb.nl), which means that travelling within the city is both straightforward, fast and convenient. The Noord/Zuidlijn (North-South metro line), which opened in 2018, is a ten-kilometre route that transports passengers between the north and south of Amsterdam in just 15 minutes.

What’s more, the surrounding Amsterdam Area is also easy to explore by public transport, with most destinations being accessible within an hour by train or bus (or a combination of the two). The city boasts an excellent and regular connection with Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, with the journey taking just 15 minutes between the two. For those wishing to travel (or come from) further afield, there are also direct connections with Muiderberg cities in Belgium, France and Germany.

LEVANT PLEIN

Circularity is at the core of the Instock restaurant in Amsterdam Oost (East): the chefs create scrumptious breakfasts, lunches, brunches and dinners from food surplus. The restaurant’s Stockroom also provides an affordable, sustainable and atmospheric meeting location. instock.nl/restaurant/restaurant-amsterdam

HET SCHEEPVAARTMUSEUM

Step back in time under the magnificent glassroofed courtyard of Het Scheepvaartmuseum (The National Maritime Museum). Built in 1656 by the Dutch Navy, the museum currently houses one of the world’s largest maritime collections and several unique meeting locales, including a historic steamship. hetscheepvaartmuseum.com

LLOYD HOTEL

This unique design hotel offers a creative space for every meeting: from a quiet private nook to sit with your board of trustees, to an unconventional room for an out-of-the-box brainstorm session, and a larger arena for more sizeable gatherings. lloyd.nl

HARD ROCK CAFE

Enjoy the legendary flavours of classic American dining in a modern, energetic setting on the waterside at Hard Rock Cafe Amsterdam. Group dining is welcome – think juicy hamburgers, golden onion ring towers and boozy milkshakes – as are dinner cruises around the canals. hardrockcafe.com/location/amsterdam

RAI Amsterdam

Inspiring people

RAI Amsterdam Opening Q1, 2020: nhow Amsterdam RAI Welcome to nhow Amsterdam RAI, a place where contemporary art, design, gastronomy and cultural expressions fit together perfectly. With 650 rooms over 25 floors, the 4-star nhow Amsterdam RAI will be the largest newly-built hotel in the Benelux.

44

The hotel is located on the RAI complex and offers a unique hotel experience for guests, including high-end gastronomy, spa, and facilities and services that reinforce the event experience. The hotel will become a new social and multicultural hub for business travellers, tourists and Amsterdam locals alike. For international multiday congresses, exhibitions and other events, the addition of the hotel means that there is a high-quality on-site headquarter hotel available for visitors, exhibitors, speakers and the organising team. Hall 5 expansion With the expansion and renovation of Hall 5, adjacent to the Europa Hall, RAI Amsterdam will have a new face on the Wielingenstraat side of the convention centre. Construction is already underway, and

T +31 (0)20 549 1722

the new section will be ready for its first exhibition and conference guests in early 2020. The existing plinth will be replaced by a 30-metre deep, 135-metre long hall on the current parking area. We are also installing a brand-new glass facade and creating a wide green strip with trees to give the hall a modern and open look and feel. Inside, the structure and high-quality materials of the Europa complex will be continued in a contemporary way. This will ensure that visitors feel no distinction between the current hall and the new expansion, with the hall feeling like one consistent space. In summary, the new Hall 5 will serve as a smart functional expansion for RAI Amsterdam with a modern, accessible and open facade to the outside world.

IBC & Amsterdam

Collaborating since 1992

48

IBC & Amsterdam IBC is the world’s most influential media, entertainment and technology show. Amsterdam has been proud to host the event since 1992, but IBC dates back further than that.

49

The first IBC was held in 1967 in London with just 32 exhibitors and 500 attendees, back when broadcasting was a very different business. Twenty-five years later, IBC moved from the UK to the Netherlands. After extensive research to find a venue that was capable of meeting IBC’s specific requirements, the RAI Amsterdam ConvenRAI AMSTERDAM tion Centre was selected, and it hosted its first IBC HOSTED ITS FIRST in July 1992. In 1994, IBC IBC IN JULY 1992 became a yearly event and has since become an established occurrence on the Amsterdam events calendar every mid-September.

50

Since its initial launch in 1967, IBC has evolved from its technical broadcast roots to become the most influential annual event for professionals engaged in the creation, management, streaming and delivery of electronic media, worldwide. Encompassing a wide breadth of topics – from online content to digital cinema, and from automated workflows to high-resolution capture and displays – this five-day event now boasts 56,000+ attendees, 300+ conference speakers, 100+ sessions and 1,700 exhibitors (2019). Connectivity Amsterdam was also chosen for its connectivity. Approximately 15 minutes away

by train from Schiphol Airport – which has direct flights to 327 destinations – the city is the ideal location for the 56,000+ attendees, who come from all over the world. What’s more, thanks to its proximity to the A10 ring road, train station, Noord/ Zuid metro line – which takes about seven minutes to/from Amsterdam Central – and tram and bus stops, RAI Amsterdam is easily accessible for the exhibitors and attendees alike. Large hotel capacity Furthermore, it is vital that there are enough places for everyone to stay. And with its 36,000+ hotel rooms, this is something that the Amsterdam Area can guar-

antee. In early 2019, amsterdam&partners joined forces with IBC and seven meeting hotels to offer IBC Exhibitors an even more varied selection of meeting and event facilities during IBC2019. Consequently, IBC will be held in Amsterdam for the next two years for sure. Beautiful city ‘In Amsterdam we have a host city which is committed to media and technology, and which works well with us to meet all our requirements. It is well-connected, by air, sea and train, and provides us with a friendly, welcoming environment which people enjoy visiting,‘ says IBC CEO, Michael Crimp. show.ibc.org

Worth a Visit Leisure programmes during your stay: exhibitions, festivals and our famous flowers

KEUKENHOF

Each year, the Keukenhof Gardens in Lisse come alive as 7 million flower bulbs in every colour of the rainbow blossom over 32 hectares. This glorious celebration of the Netherlands’ world-famous flower history takes place over an eight-week period that ties in with the tulip’s national flowering season. The stars of the show are naturally the stunning blooms that cover the park, but there are also flower shows, inspirational gardens, unique art, events and the ‘Tulip Mania’ exhibition at the Juliana Pavilion to enjoy. The theme for 2020 is ‘A World of Colours’, with visitors being treated to a total of 800 varieties of tulip that will delight both the eyes and the nose. 21 Mar – 19 May 2019 keukenhof.nl

SAIL 2020I

Since it first cruised into the Dutch capital in 1975, SAIL Amsterdam has grown to become not just one of the city’s biggest attractions, but also Europe’s largest free-access nautical event. Taking place once every five years, the 2020 edition is SAIL’s 10th, and this special anniversary promises to be an unforgettable one. A flotilla of more than 600 tall ships and numerous other special boats and vessels will sail through the Noordzeekanaal along the River IJ before dropping anchor near the city centre in and around the IJ-haven for five days of swashbuckling fun and games. The area will be split into zones or ‘Oceans’, each hosting themed events, so even if you aren’t out on the water, there’s still plenty to do. What’s more, the night programmes close with a spectacular firework show. 12 – 16 Aug 2020 sail.nl

CHAGALL, PICASSO, MONDRIAN Chagall, Picasso, Mondrian and Others: Migrant Artists in Paris tells the story of artists who were all foreigners living in the French capital between 1900 and 1950. The exhibition highlights how, despite the challenges of the time and the fact that they lived in a society that was increasingly polarised, nationalistic, xenophobic and anti-Semitic, these artists found their place and dared to take their art to new heights to create powerful work. Featuring more than 50 artists, photographers and graphic designers from the Stedelijk’s collection, this exhibition is an incredible opportunity to experience modern masters, discover new artists and view the museum’s large collection of Chagalls for the first time in nearly 70 years. 21 Sept 2019 – 2 Feb 2020 stedelijk.nl

AMSTERDAM LIGHT FESTIVALI

The eight edition of Amsterdam Light Festival sees spectacular artworks light up Amsterdam’s historic Canal Ring, River Amstel and other special locations. Twenty-one artists, designers and architects interpret this year’s theme ‘Disrupt!’ in various ways so that not just the art but the city itself is part of the exhibition. While some installations form playful interventions in the city’s streets, other artists have transformed its existing architecture with their light artworks to provide the viewer with a fresh perspective on their surroundings. Curated by Lennart Booij, the festival can be viewed by boat*, on foot or by bike. Guided tours are also available, as is an extensive side-programme of activities taking place at locations throughout the city. 28 Nov 2019 – 19 Jan 2020 Artworks are lit from 17:00 until 23:00 (31 Dec, until 20:00) amsterdamlightfestival.com *Several canal cruise companies offer tours of the route, and most depart from Central Station. Prices differ per company.

REMBRANDT-VELÁZQUEZ

2019 marks 350 years since the death of one of the Netherlands’ most esteemed painters, Rembrandt van Rijn, and cultural spaces across the country have been honouring his life and work in a special nationwide celebration. One such exhibition taking place at the Rijksmuseum is Rembrandt-Velázquez: Dutch and Spanish Masters, which showcases a comprehensive overview of paintings by the two great 17th-century masters, as well as masterpieces by, among others, Bartolomé Murillo, Francisco Zurbarán, Frans Hals and Johannes Vermeer. What makes this exhibition so fascinating is that the artworks are displayed in pairs – one work from each country – allowing the visitor to explore the similarities, differences and often surprising dialogues that arise between the paintings. 11 Oct 2019 – 19 Jan 2020 rijksmuseum.nl

New in Amsterdam

JEAN-FRANÇOIS MILLET

In Jean-François Millet: Sowing the Seeds of Modern Art, the Van Gogh Museum illustrates just how progressive the French artist was for his time. Although the painter was classically trained, Millet undoubtedly sowed the seeds of modern art with his radical painting technique, modern style and inspirational portrayal of peasant life. The exhibition sheds light on his technique, use of coarse brushstrokes and strong lines, and how he simplified shapes to their bare essence. It also explores just how his works influenced and inspired generations of artists to come, including Vincent van Gogh, Camille Pissarro, Georges Seurat, Claude Monet, Winslow Homer, Paula Modersohn-Becker, Edvard Munch and Salvador Dalí. 4 Oct 2019 – 12 Jan 2020 vangoghmuseum.nl
