Foreword
Open Mind, Sharp Business Amsterdam is one of Europe’s most picture-perfect capitals, where 16th-century spectacle stands side-byside with 21st ingenuity. This is no happy accident. More than four centuries of daring, innovation and entrepreneurship has helped Amsterdam to set its own path. And at the heart of each new development has been the open-minded nature of our international citizenship.

Amsterdam’s quality of life is next to none, making this a wonderfully positive place to bring people together. And if you have any concerns about bringing sensitive topics to the city: honest, open dialogue is always welcomed. Amsterdam is now the 8th most successful congress city in the world, according to ICCA rankings, and we’re confident that things are getting even better. Hotel development is soaring, with a host of international brands entering the market here. While our conference and event facilities are continuously thinking outside the box to keep improving. Undoubtedly, business here is about to get even sharper.

Feel at home in Amsterdam, meet the right people and make the best business connections.
Amsterdam: the place to meet An attractive quality of life, superfast connectivity and a dynamic business ecosystem that makes things happen: these are the key elements that ensure Amsterdam is the place to meet. All three are strong features of Amsterdam’s business landscape, making it one of the best cities in the world for meetings and conventions. As well as its historic city centre, criss-crossed with glistening canals and architectural grandeur, Amsterdam is home to a rich variety of world-class attractions. These include cultural icons like the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum, which are not only within easy reach, but available to host events. With around 40,000 hotel rooms available, your guests will always be well catered for here. And as for the event location itself, choose a 400-year-old canal house, an ultra-modern waterfront hotel or an all-purpose conference venue that can host 20,000 people. We have the perfect venue for every occasion. Amsterdam is one of Europe’s key transport hubs; be it by plane, rail, road or sea, getting here is easy. So is getting around, with our comprehensive public transport network, our expanding network of electric taxis, and – if you really want to go Dutch – our bike hire companies. And meanwhile, your essential data will be transferring at reliably high speeds. We are an open-minded city: open to ideas, to diversity, to inclusiveness. 90% of Amsterdam residents speak English and the average resident speaks two or more languages. Whoever you are, wherever you are from, you will fit right in. And we do sharp business. Amsterdam is one of the most multicultural cities in the world. Amsterdam is a city of innovation and entrepreneurial spirit.

The wheels of business Until you see it with your own eyes, it's almost impossible to fathom that there are more bicycles than people in Amsterdam. From smart-suited executives to elderly ladies with fluffy dogs – nobody is too young, too old or too important to hop on a bike. The city’s compact nature, its unbeatable network of cycle-paths and its deeply embedded bike culture makes it one of the world’s most cycle-friendly cities. And both locals and internationals always praise the ability to zip around town on two wheels – whether heading out to a business meeting or dinner date – and how this positively impacts upon their quality of life.
Amsterdam is the world’s number one cycling city so enjoy a happier and healthier two-wheeled experience.

Or we can simply connect you to our bike rental partners to set the wheels in motion.

RAI Amsterdam today and in the future.
Parking and exhibitions under one roof As the growth of the Zuidas business district in the past decade has caused various parking areas near the RAI complex to disappear, RAI Amsterdam decided to build a new parking structure with 1,000 spaces. The RAI Parking building be taken into use in August 2016. A genuinely unique feature of the multifunctional building is its first floor, which has a double ceiling height and will be fitted out with event facilities. There is a direct connection to the surrounding halls at the RAI and the space can be used as a supplementary exhibition space of some 2,500 square metres.
Meeting parking demands Once the new car park is complete the RAI will have over 4,000 spaces on its own premises. This will allow it to better meet the demands of the sort of large, international, multi-day events that take place in the exhibition and conference centre.

The four pillars that make Amsterdam a sharp city for smart business.
Connectivity Whether it’s people or data you want to move, Amsterdam does so in style. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is one of Europe’s four major hubs, operating to more than 300 direct destinations, and an easy 20 minutes away from the city centre by public transport. The city itself is compact enough to organise face-to-face meetings with ease, knowing that you can rely on the extensive public transport network – and the multilingual locals – to get you where you need to be. As for digital connectivity, we’re way ahead there too. The Amsterdam Area boasts one of the fastest broadband speeds in the world – currently averaging 15.3 Mbps – and the world’s largest data transport hub, AMS-IX.
16 MICEdition Summer 2016
The value of Amsterdam By international reputation, Amsterdam sits confidently amongst major metropolitan peers like London, Paris and New York. Although they may have the advantage of larger population pools, Amsterdam undoubtedly punches above its weight when it comes to delivering high quality services at the best prices. That’s why when you host an event in Amsterdam, big or small, you’re guaranteed a professional service – from planning through to execution. Amsterdam’s burgeoning hotel development market is a major plus for the meetings scene. In 2015 the number of hotel rooms increased from 25,000 to 37,600, with more hotels set to open in 2016. Combined with the I amsterdam® approved label, which launched in 2014, we’re proud to guarantee the availability of up to 16,000 hotel rooms without preliminary discussions. This is paired with a ‘best deal’ for organisers, exhibitors and visitors alike, always ensuring quality, affordability and reliability.
Business ecosystem More than 2,700 international companies, including Google, Tesla and the Industrial & Commercial Bank of China, have invested in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area, taking advantage of competitive tax rates, international trade treaties and the city’s highlyskilled workforce – of whom nearly half are universityeducated, and 90% speak English.
Quality of life
Amsterdam’s two universities, VU University Amsterdam and University of Amsterdam, are well placed in the QS World University Rankings. And open lines of communication between the academic institutions, private business and the public sector means that bureaucracy doesn’t stand in the way of entrepreneurship and collaboration. That’s why the talent of tomorrow, be it students, researchers or startup entrepreneurs, is choosing Amsterdam today.
Amsterdam combines the friendliness and accessibility of a historic village with the world-class facilities and cultural attractions of a modern metropolis. That’s why our international visitors feel instantly at home, completely secure and embraced by an outward-looking culture that celebrates openness and diversity. Amsterdam is famed for its open-minded appetite for healthy discussion and progressive topics are always welcome here, whether it’s gay rights, euthanasia, abortion, AIDS or human rights. We’re a smart city: our business, our people and our environment grow together in dynamic harmony. Consistently topping international work/life balance surveys, Amsterdam knows how to bring out the best in people.

Worth a visit
Spoilt for choice A few tips to help you enjoy Amsterdam this spring and summer.
The days are getting longer and the temperature is rising, making it irresistible to enjoy Amsterdam and explore everything the city has to offer. There are numerous opportunities to unwind and take in the sights, whether it is morning, noon or night. With so much packed into the city’s agenda, something is sure to tickle your fancy.
Made in Amsterdam By way of 100 works of art, ‘Made in Amsterdam’ showcases the most important artists, ideas and movements in the Amsterdam art world over the last century. Catch this one-off collection at the Amsterdam Museum until 31 July 2016. Art imitates life in Amsterdam With works presented in chronological order, ‘Made in Amsterdam’ invites you to take a walk through the city and through time. The selection includes big names like George Hendrik Breitner, Karel Appel and Marlene Dumas, alongside works by lesser-known but no less talented artists like Gustave De Smet, Frieda Hunziker and Nola Hatterman. Amsterdam is an iconic city for artists. Even today, artists from all corners of the world are drawn here to study or create. They come and go, experiment, succeed and fail, cause fights and work together on collaborations. With this exhibition, the Amsterdam Museum gives a glimpse into a bona fide ‘art city’, which serves as a haven for its creatives.

World Press Photo Winning entries from the annual World Press Photo contest go on display from 16 April to 10 July at the Nieuwe Kerk, the spectacular church overlooking Dam Square. The World Press Photo Foundation was founded in Amsterdam, and has grown to become a global influence in the world of photography and press imagery. The latest in photojournalism Each year, professional press photographers, photo agencies, newspapers and magazines from all over the world submit their top news-related pictures from the previous year. The best works are selected and assembled in a travelling exhibition of over 200 images, giving an overview of how press photographers tackle their work around the globe and how the press relates news through images.

A reflection of trends and developments in photojournalism, this exhibition not only presents the (at times gruesome) reality of news, current affairs and events on the world stage, but also the wonders of life, sports, art, science and nature.

Catherine the Great A collection of more than 300 paintings, sculptures and personal objects of Catherine the Great make their way from St. Petersburg to Amsterdam this summer. The ‘Catherine the Great’ exhibition takes place at the Hermitage Amsterdam from 18 June 2016 to 15 January 2017, offering a unique glimpse into the life of Europe’s longest-reigning empress. The Golden Age of Russia After overthrowing her husband, the Russian tsar Peter III, Catherine became immortalised and continues to be considered the greatest tsarina of all times. The period of Catherine the Great’s rule (1762-1796) is known as the ‘Catherinian Era’ and is often considered the Golden Age of the Russian Empire and Russian Mobility. Her memoirs reveal that she was not only an avid art collector, but also a confidant for artists such as Voltaire and Diderot. Alongside some spectacular portraits and paintings, many of her possessions, such as jewellery, dresses and other fine artefacts, help to unravel her decadent life. © State Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg

Worth a visit Robeco SummerNights Let your hair down at Amsterdam’s classiest concert hall this summer. Taking place from 1 July until 31 August, the Robeco SummerNights series is an integral part of Amsterdam’s cultural calendar, inviting both performers and audiences to relax amidst a more informal atmosphere, and pairing classical music with swinging jazz and lively pop. More than 80 performances are lined up for the 2016 festival, kicking off with Dutch hip-hop star Kyteman and his Orchestra, and ending with a performance of Mozart’s Cosí fan tutti by the Dutch Touring Opera. World-class performances The performances are held in the Royal Concertgebouw, which is one of the most prestigious concert halls in the world, attracting the most sought-after acts and artists. This summer series is also a great opportunity to enjoy top-notch international talents at lower prices, daring you to try something different. The Concertgebouw has also considered how good food, drink and music complement one another, especially on a warm summer evening. With that in mind, the Robeco Summer Restaurant offers two and three-course dinner menus for dining prior to the concert, or head to the Summer Café for a snack and a night cap after the concert.

Grachtenfestival The Grachtenfestival (Canal Festival), held from 12 to 21 August on and around Amsterdam’s canals, is one of the city’s most impressive musical highlights. At various locations along the historic canal belt, this annual festival is the stage for young talented musicians, giving them every opportunity to take the next step in their musical careers. The festival attracts thousands of lovers of classical and contemporary music from all over the world. Canals and classical music The beautiful canals in the centre of Amsterdam form the perfect backdrop for classical music. Concerts are performed on stages by or even on the water, as the musicians stand on pontoons or boats and the audience listens from the canal side (or from their own boat). One of the highlights during the Grachtenfestival is the free Prinsengracht Concert on 20 August, taking place on a grand pontoon by the Pulitzer Hotel.

CAOS
A business case of an Amsterdam convention.
Professionals to help you organise your conference
2016 is the Year of the Mushroom in The Netherlands. The Dutch mushroom industry, which is the second largest in the world and Wageningen University and Research Center have successfully pitched Amsterdam as the location for the 19th International Society for Mushroom Science Conference at the Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam. From May 29-June 2 more than 700 participants from 40 countries will gather here to share the latest research results and business developments. In total there will be approximately 275 presentations. They will also visit the tradeshow International Mushroom Days being held in ‘s Hertogenbosch that same week. 2 events, 2 cities, but 1 common goal: To show the world that mushrooms and its fungi relatives are relevant in all aspects of life and play an important role in today’s sustainability efforts, and that the Dutch science and industry are leading the way in innovation in this field. The Local Organising Committee chose CAOS Conference Organizers as their partner more than 6 years ago. After quite an intense selection procedure they decided to work with our team as they recognized the commitment we had. This together with the professional approach and solid financial proposal done, they chose for us. So far so good! We have made new friends and we are very excited that in a few weeks’ time the meeting will start. Imagine that: 700 people packing suitcases, saying good-bye to their families and homes travelling to Amsterdam and enjoying all the spectacular things we have to offer and we organised for them. That is a thrilling thought. Always happy to play a ‘home game’, CAOS is extra motivated to ensure participants will leave Amsterdam wishing they could have stayed a little longer.
