WELCOME TO OLD HOLLAND MARKEN

This so picture-perfect it’s like stepping into a 17th-century Dutch landscape painting, historic Marken with its characteristic wooden houses – 145 of which are National Monuments – was an island in the Zuiderzee until 1957, when it was connected to the mainland by a dyke. You may recognise the lighthouse, the ‘Horse of Marken’, from adverts for Heineken beer. Board the Volendam Marken Express (ferry, sails all year round) to travel between the old fishing villages of Volendam and Marken.

Das malerische Marken mit seinen typischen Holzhäusern – von denen 145 nationale Denkmäler sind – ist wie ein niederländisches Landschaftsgemälde aus dem 17. Jh. Marken war bis 1957 eine Insel in der Zuiderzee, danach wurde es durch einen Damm mit dem Festland verbunden. Vielleicht erkennen Sie den Leuchtturm, das „Pferd von Marken“ aus Anzeigen für Heineken-Bier. Der Volendam Marken Express (Fähre, fährt ganzjährig) verkehrt zwischen den alten Fischerdörfern Volendam und Marken.

Traditional costumes and smoked eel are two important ingredients to which Volendam owes its fame. This fishing village with its characteristic wooden houses just has to be seen. The harbour, decorated with old fishing boats and pleasure craft, is a feast for the eyes. Behind the dyke is the oldest part of Volendam’s centre known as the Doolhof: narrow streets with no clearly defined pattern guarantee an impressive walk. And don’t forget to visit art Hotel Spaander. Here you can see more than 1400 works of art of many famous painters.

Traditionelle Kostüme und Räucheraal sind zwei wichtige Aspekte, denen Voldendam seinen Ruhm verdankt. Das Fischerdorf mit seinen typischen Holzhäusern ist eine echte Attraktion.

The Zaanse Schans is a residential area in which the 18th and 19th centuries are brought to life.

Stroll past the bakery museum and enjoy the smell of fresh bread, or take a look at the warehouse where clogs are made. You should be sure not to miss the cheese factory, pewter foundry and the various windmills. The Zaanse Schans is a unique part of the Netherlands, full of wooden houses, mills, barns and workshops. Make a cycling or sailing trip, browse the shops or treat yourself at the pancake restaurant. A day out at the Zaanse Schans in North Holland is fun and educational. www.dezaanseschans.nl

All three tourist hotspots offer central parking (see map for exact locations).

Parking is free in Volendam; please use the parking machines to pay for your parking in Zaanse Schans and Marken to avoid being ticketed. Zaanse Schans is especially busy during the high season (spring and summer); arrive before 11 am to ensure a parking space. Respect the local residents.
