NEED TO KNOW

NEED TO KNOW The compact size of the metropolis and the efficient public transport make Amsterdam easily accessible.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

TRAIN The train station at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is located directly below the airport. The journey to Amsterdam Central Station takes just 20 minutes (one-way ticket €4.10). Every day dozens of trains, including high-speed trains, leave Amsterdam for other European destinations such as Brussels, Paris and Frankfurt. All parts of the Netherlands can be easily and quickly accessed by train. Tickets are sold at NS service desk or ticket machines.

COACHES In and nearby the city centre, Amsterdam has over 125 special parking spots for coaches. You can download the ‘Amsterdam for coaches’ brochure at: www.amsterdam.nl/touringcar

www.ns.nl

EASY & AFFORDABLE PARKING WITH P+R Parking in a P+R car park costs just €8 per 24 hours – with a maximum parking time of 96 hours. This fee includes free public transport to the centre of Amsterdam for a maximum of five people. Be sure to hand over your parking ticket to the P+R car park attendant and ask for a P+R chip card(s) upon arrival. Please read the P+R leaflet for more details.

Travelling within Amsterdam is straightforward and convenient. There is an extensive transport network connecting city districts, including trams, metro, buses and (free) ferry. Journeys are paid by using a public transport card (OV-chipkaart). Visitor Information Centres offer 24 to 96 hour tickets (1-4 days) that entitle you to unlimited travel through Amsterdam. The public transport company GVB offers up to 168-hour tickets (7 days). Drivers and conductors also sell 1-hour (€2.80) and 24-hour (€7.50) disposable cards on trams and buses. Most importantly: check in and check out on every journey at one of the card readers. Visit www.9292.nl to plan your journey.

AMSTERDAM & REGION DAY TICKET

TAXIS Taxis can be handy when travelling to and from the airport, late at night when the trams have stopped running or when you’re running late. Because space in the city centre is limited, taxis cannot stop anywhere they like. Taxi stands, which are identified by blue taxi signs, can be found near tourist hotspots such as Central Station and Leidseplein.

The Amsterdam & Region Day Ticket is the easiest way to explore the city and its beautiful surrounding area. With the ticket you can explore the centre of Amsterdam, beaches of Zandvoort, Edam’s cheese market, Schiphol Airport, the Aalsmeer flower auction and traditional villages like Volendam and the Zaanse Schans. The Amsterdam & Region Day Ticket is a 24-hour public transport pass valid on metros, trams and buses (including night buses) operated by Connexxion, GVB and EBS in the greater Amsterdam area. The ticket costs €13.50 and is available for purchase at the I amsterdam Visitor Centres in Amsterdam and Schiphol (see page 75), selected hotels and ticket counters of the participating public transport companies (Connexxion, GVB and EBS). VAN GOGH MUSEUM

V

incent Van Gogh might just be the Netherlands’ best-known contribution to the art world. The Amsterdam museum that bears his name houses the largest collection of pieces by Vincent van Gogh in the world. In total, the permanent collection includes 200 paintings, 500 drawings and more than 700 letters, plus his collection of Japanese prints. For both locals and far-travelling visitors, the Van Gogh Museum is a unique and inspirational experience. Alongside his instantly recognisable impressionist works, such as his landscapes, self-portraits and still lifes – especially ‘Sunflowers’ – the museum provides opportunities to track the artist’s development and compare his paintings to works by other artists from the 19th century – those who inspired him and those who drew inspiration from him. Every Friday evening, the Van Gogh Museum stays open until 22.00, inviting musicians, DJs and other performers to share its public spaces with the artworks and visitors – who can also enjoy a drink. FREE with the I amsterdam City Card Contact information page 70

MEET VINCENT: NEW STORIES, NEW INSPIRATION

As well as being a master of colour, Van Gogh was a storyteller. His work reveals to us his vision of nature, country life, love, religion, literature and, above all, his own artistic development. These stories still have universal appeal and his paintings are universally admired.

NEW ENTRANCE The Van Gogh Museum annually welcomes around 1.5 million visitors from all over the world. For the purpose of improving the expected visitor flows in the future, a new main entrance, a magnificent glass dome at the Kurokawa Wing, opened on the side of the Museumplein in September 2015.

MUNCH: VAN GOGH Vincent van Gogh and Edvard Munch are known for their emotionally charged paintings and drawings, their personal and innovative style and lives full of hardship. Despite many striking parallels in their oeuvres and artistic ambitions, and the fact that they are frequently considered as each other’s counterparts, never before has a museum taken up the challenge of juxtaposing them in one exhibition. The Van Gogh Museum and the Munch Museum have therefore joined forces to create this once-in-a-lifetime exhibition. 25 September 201517 January 2016

HOTSPOTS FOR AMSTERDAM CULTURE Formerly a circus theatre, the Royal Theatre Carré is one of Amsterdam’s best-known venues. Its romantic location on the Amstel is certainly fit for a king – or anyone who wants to feel like one. Located on the lively Leidseplein, the Stadsschouwburg city theatre is a unique baroque building with a rich history. A select number of productions feature English surtitles (like subtitles, but above the stage). DANCE CAPITAL Dance music is a big deal in Amsterdam, and the dance festival season stretches from the beginning of summer through to the end of autumn. With world-famous DJs and magical settings, Amsterdam’s electronic music festivals are sure to have you dancing to their beat. As the world’s biggest club festival and Europe's leading electronic music conference, the Amsterdam Dance Event in October is a true dance lovers' Mecca.

Amsterdam’s nightlife tends to cluster in two major areas: the Rembrandtplein and Leidseplein. Both offer a variety of venues, including dance clubs, bars and typical Dutch ‘brown cafés’. At the lively Max Euweplein you can try your luck at Holland Casino. Some of the most well-known venues in Amsterdam include Paradiso, Melkweg, Trouw, AIR and Escape. For major stadiumsized concerts, Amsterdam’s three biggest venues – the Ziggo Dome, Amsterdam ArenA and Heineken Music Hall – are all located in Amsterdam Zuidoost. Gay and lesbian bars and clubs are located throughout the city, but you’ll find the most options near the Reguliersdwarsstraat and Warmoesstraat.

Flowers of Amsterdam

The Netherlands produces 70 per cent of the world’s commercial flower output. In the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area, you’ll see contemporary flower power in action.

BULB FIELDS The Netherlands is truly a land of flowers. Cycling or hiking through North Holland’s bulb fields in springtime really is a mesmerising experience. With everything in full bloom, you’re surrounded on all sides by rainbow-like rows of colour – purple hyacinths, countless varieties of tulips and bright yellow daffodils. KEUKENHOF The centrepiece of the bulb fields, this famous flower park is home to 7 million blossoming bulbs, as well as idyllic ponds, ancient trees and flowering shrubs. Open for just eight weeks a year, there are themed pavilions, floral mosaics, a treasure hunt for kids and much more. The Keukenhof theme for 2016 is ‘The Golden Age’. The period when the

Netherlands flourished with a growth in trade and commerce, science and art. This was also the time of the world explorers and when the tulip trade prospered. Keukenhof 2016 is open from 24 March up to and including 16 May. Contact information page 71

CASTLE KEUKENHOF It may be perpetually outshone by its showy neighbour, but this castle (located straight across from the world-famous Keukenhof gardens) boasts an impressive history with Golden Age roots. Inside, you’ll find portraits, artefacts and period furniture; in the 230-hectare wooded estate, leading artists’ work. FLORAHOLLAND FLOWER AUCTION The green-fingered should be sure to visit FloraHolland’s enormous flower auction to witness Holland’s contemporary bulb boom. Each day, 19 million flowers and 2 million plants are sold in an area so large the workers traverse it by bike. The earlier you arrive (it opens at 7am) the more action you’ll see. Buyers haggle for the best prices, and the blooms are dispatched all over the globe within hours of being sold. The flowers are sold in a ‘Dutch auction’: as the clock ticks down, the price of the flowers gets lower. Bidders risk either paying too much or missing out entirely. Contact information page 71

Old Holland

Historic windmills, picturesque former fishing villages, UNESCO-protected polder landscapes and world-famous cheese towns: Old Holland is the Netherlands in a nutshell.

INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE

B

ack in the 17th century, when Amsterdam’s craft guilds opposed the construction of windmills within the city limits, more than 1,000 mills were built in the nearby Zaan region. Today, this area is a magnificent piece of perfectly preserved industrial heritage.

ZAANSE SCHANS With its traditional houses, windmills, warehouses and workshops, historic museum village Zaanse Schans offers a preserved glimpse of what it was like to live in the industrial heart of the Netherlands in the 18th and 19th centuries. Many of the village’s characteristic houses are now museums, gift shops or workshops, while others are still private residences. Some of the Zaanse Schans remaining windmills are also open to the public.

SAY CHEESE These days, Dutch medieval towns Edam and Alkmaar are world famous for its cheese. Until 1922, farmers from the surrounding are sailed by boat to Edam’s cheese market, where their produce was weighted and sold. You can see how this was done every Wednesday during the months of July and August. On these days the cheese market is revived, complete with costumed cheese carriers, inspectors, farmers and traders. Every Friday morning (April – September), cheese purveyors in Alkmaar ceremoniously lay our their wares in waxy rows on the Waagplein. After the ringing of the cheese bell at 10am, trading begins. By 12.30, trading is complete and the Waagplein once again becomes one huge outdoor café, where visitors can have lunch and enjoy the sun. Edam: www.edammerkaasmarkt.nl Alkmaar: www.kaasmarkt.nl

Please note: the outdoor portion of Zaanse Schans is free, but opening times and entrance prices vary at each of the museums, workshops and windmills. Free visit to many attractions at Zaanse Schans with your I amsterdam City Card. Contact information page 72

INTELL HOTEL & MONET

DAYTRIP AROUND THE ZAAN

I

n the 17th century, the Zaan region was at the centre of the world’s foremost shipbuilding nation. So it seems fitting to explore the region from the water – especially as spring arrives. The 11km waterfront of the River Zaan connects approximately 75 vintage industrial buildings, including windmills and the vast Zaan Wall at Wormer. It makes for a surprisingly beautiful view from the river. Sloop rental is available in the centre of Zaandam – and with a GPS route, even the biggest landlubbers can’t get lost (www.varenopdezaan.nl). When you get back on dry land, the centre of Zaandam is full of great shops, restaurants and cafés to while your afternoon away... www.zaanstreek.nl/visitors

‘Zaandam is quite remarkable,’ wrote Claude Monet, ‘and there is enough to paint for a lifetime.’ Indeed, the region does seem to have inspired him: during his short stay here in 1871, Monet created 25 paintings. Visitors can follow in the artist’s footsteps and visit the places he painted using the book 1871 Monet Zaandam (available in shops and at Zaanse Schans) as their guide (www. monetinzaandam.nl). What would Claude Monet have painted had he walked around Zaandam today? Probably the building of the now world-famous architects Miller & van der Winden. Built as a modern interpretation of the traditional green Zaanse houses, the gigantic, 12-storey structure is the showpiece of the hotel chain Inntel. The blue house at the top of the building is based on the eponymous painting Claude Monet painted in 1871 in Zaandam. www.inntelhotelsamsterdamzaandam.nl

AMSTERDAM WATERLAND

W

ith green meadows, grazing cows, colourful villages and traditional farmhouses, Waterland offers an abundance of activities for anyone who enjoys the outdoors. Walking or biking through Amsterdam Waterland is a remarkable experience. An oasis of green polders, waterways, 38 kilometres of dykes and restored mills – and an easy 30-minute bike ride from Amsterdam – this flat, watery landscape is also home to some 350 traditional farmhouses with characteristic pyramidshaped roofs. The Beemster area, the birthplace of the eponymous cheese, is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the little village of De Rijp is often dubbed ‘Holland’s most beautiful village’. If you cycle, sail or walk through it, you’ll soon understand why.

ZUIDERZEE MUSEUM Recalling life in a Golden era fishing village, the Zuiderzee Museum is one of Holland’s most child-friendly days out. In 1932 the Afsluitdijk (the IJsselmeer Barrier Dam) closed off the former Zuiderzee from the North Sea, and the two inland seas thus created were called the IJsselmeer an dthe Markermeer (meer is Dutch for ‘lake’). F

ollow the River Amstel and in no time at all you’ll be cycling past grazing cows, country houses and historic villages. Amsterdam has a green oasis right on its doorstep, meaning everyone can easily enjoy the natural diversity of the Amstel River Countryside. If starting a trip from Amsterdam’s city centre, travel south along the River Amstel. As soon as it begins to weave and bend, watch as the buildings fade away, replaced by swaying reeds, green meadows and historic villages – such as Ouderkerk aan de Amstel, dating from the 12th century. In the Golden Age, famous artists would retreat to De Ronde Hoep polder to capture its wild nature. And as you continue southbound on or alongside the river, you’ll encounter grand artefacts from the Defence Line of Amsterdam, such as the Fort aan de Drecht, just outside Uithoorn.

In 2014 Amstelveen was voted the second greenest city in the Netherlands, and is home to one of the largest municipal parks in Europe the Amsterdam Forest (het Amsterdamse bos), as well as the family friendly Amstelpark. The parks comprise lush forests, playgrounds, a petting zoo and offers plenty of space for a relaxing picnic. Amstelveen is also well known for the famous Cobra Museum of Modern Art. ake a trip south of the city and enjoy the grandeur and nature of the Historical River Estates that dot the banks of the winding River Vecht. The River Vecht between Amsterdam and Utrecht is a wonderful setting for a boat trip or cycle route. The bank or water offer an open view of the imposing castles, country houses and accompanying tearooms. Rich merchants from the Golden Age once spent their summer months here. A smart place to take a holiday, because at the beginning of the 17th century, the River Vecht was the most important link between Amsterdam and Utrecht. The holidaymakers ‘only’ needed five to seven hours to reach their rural residence. Thankfully, it’s much quicker today!

New Land

With their modern architecture and water-rich landscapes, the ‘new towns’ just east of the city form a modern contrast to the rich history of Amsterdam. BATAVIA WHARF The Bataviahaven (Batavia Harbour) was reclaimed from the former Zuiderzee and is often the starting point for international sailing races such as the Batavia Regatta. It's also home to a replica of the 17th century ship Batavia, built with traditional materials and techniques. The nearby Batavia Stad is a shoppers’ paradise. Bargain hunters flock to this fashion outlet mall from around the country to seek out big brands and discounted goods in more than 100 shops.

F

or centuries the Dutch population has waged a war with water, using dykes, dams, windmills and pumping stations to protect farms and towns. In the 20th century work began on reclaiming a large area of land from the former Zuiderzee, creating the province of Flevoland and modern cities like Almere and Lelystad in the process. These cities blend modern architecture with futuristic urban planning, all while embracing the water and nature right on their doorstep. Hit the shops, take to the beach, sail on the lake or wander through nature reserves where wild horses, deer and cattle roam freely. OOSTVAARDERSPLASSEN A unique nature reserve located between Lelystad and Almere, Oostvaarderplassen comprises 56km2 of protected

marshlands and fields, serving as a migration area for birds. As such, it’s an amazing spot for a hike or a day of bird watching. Stop by De Oostvaarder, the official visitor centre, with its café with a panoramic view, exhibition, video room and viewing areas with telescopes looking out across the park. MUSEUM NIEUW LAND This museum presents the rich history of the area we now call Flevoland. Visitors can learn about the world of the prehistoric Swifterbant people and discover that Flevoland is the largest ‘ship cemetery’ on dry land in the world. The museum’s central theme is the largest reclamation project ever: the Zuiderzee Project. Contact information page 71

AMSTERDAM'S NEW LAND

F

ind out all about the history of Flevoland, the youngest province in the Netherlands, where people live on the seabed, in Nieuw Land, Lelystad. This used to be the wild Zuiderzee, where land was created from water, thanks to the Zuider Zee Project. The land reclamation of Flevoland is an example of the creative way Dutch people deal with water management. The exhibition, ‘Sink or Swim’ shows the national story of the Dutch and water through the centuries, from the prehistory until today, from building the first farm on an artificial dwelling hill to dyke construction, the reclamation of lakes, and measures taken to counteract flooding.

Do you like revolutionary architecture and modern urban development? Then your visit to Flevoland could turn into a real adventure. Some city blocks in Lelystad and Almere are exhibitions in their own right, featuring breathtaking visual spectacles of architectural bravery. www.visitflevoland.nl/architecture

ake a seaside stroll, shop or hop from one sunny beachside terrace to the next. And of course, enjoy the amazing views and the exceptionally wide sandy beach. Zandvoort is one of the Netherlands’ oldest beach resorts, with the first bathhouse put into use back in 1829. This was the start of the development of a luxury bathing resort frequented by many people of renown – including Austrian Empress Sisi – and it remains one of the region’s most popular beaches. The Jutters Mu-Zee-Um (literally ‘Mu-SeaUm’) exhibits items that have washed up on the beach at here. It’s also home to five salt-water aquariums, showcasing the local sea life (www.juttersmuseum.nl).

HIGH-OCTANE THRILLS If relaxing on the beach isn’t your thing, you’ll find plenty of high-octane excitement at Circuit Park Zandvoort. Nestled amidst the dunes, each weekend it plays host to diverse (inter)national motorsport events. Whether you’re a fan of burning rubber or simply curious about classic cars or racing, it makes for a unique day out. www.circuit-zandvoort.nl

BEACH PAVILIONS Bubbling Beach has more than 30 beach pavilions, each with its own style and character – from super-trendy to family-friendly – which make a great base for a day on the beach. Many beach pavilions also offer various water-sports and activities.

he National Park ZuidKennemerland is a remarkable expanse of dunes between Zandvoort and IJmuiden, covering approximately 38 hectares and attracting two million visitors each year. The Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen just to the south of ZuidKennemerland, meanwhile, is dotted with old bunkers from World War II and is where Amsterdam’s drinking water comes from.

he tranquil and broad beach at IJmuiden aan Zee is not only perfect for chilling out and breathing in the salty sea air, but also for working up a sweat with popular beach and water sports. Kite-surfing is particularly popular, as is racing kite buggies across the sand. There’s a surfing centre right on the beach where you can learn the basics, as well as rent wetsuits and gear. IJmuiden is the only gateway to Amsterdam harbour for large seafaring vessels and cruise boats. Gawp at the huge ships, find out how the four locks work and don’t forget to sample the freshly caught fish at one of the many restaurants.

TRANSPORT TIP The beaches of Amsterdam are easily accessible by public transport. To reach IJmuiden, take the direct bus line 82 (from busstop Elandsgracht) or train to Haarlem followed by bus 75. A direct train will bring you to Zandvoort every 30 minutes from Amsterdam Centraal.
