message Welcome to Hongkong and Welcome to IAMURE! I BRING TO you early yuletide greetings from the 40 institutional members and the more than a thousand individual members of the International Association of Multidisciplinary Research, a transborder organization of researchers spread in fifty countries covering six continents. Hongkong has a rich and colorful history and is a model of transition from the British rule to the Chinese leadership of today. We selected Hongkong for its melting pot of world cultures and great universities which are among the best in the world. We are happy to blend the research cultures of the United States of America, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, the Philippines, among others. This provides us the opportunity to form friendships and academic alliances leading to collaborations in research and publications. I also wish to invite you and your friends to join our last conference for the year, the Asian Conference in Multidisciplinary Research in Higher Education at the Marco Polo Davao City, Philippines on November 26-28,2014. We have hurdled the surveillance audit for our ISO 9001:2008 by the AJA Registrars and we are now preparing for the new QMS 9001:2015. Our research journals have become the avenue for global dissemination of research through our indexing companies enabling us a global reach of 200 countries. These are well received by the faculty of the good universities in different parts of the world.Where shall we be in 2015? We have selected Japan, Cambodia, Vietnam, Brunei Darussalam, Taiwan, among others. Discover Hongkong and explore friendships with our participants. I thank the Philippine Association of Institutions for Research for cohosting this event through the executive leadership of Ms Irish P. Balios and the International Association of Scholarly Publishers, Editors, and Reviewers with Prof. Dr. Djuwari as President and Mr. Chris Ivan O. Lagapa, Executive Director.. message A STORY WRITTEN by Jean Giono in 1953 tells of a man who lived in a deserted and desolate valley devoid of any greenery. The narrator in this story in the book entitled, The Man Who Planted Trees met a man named Elzeard while desperately looking for thirst-quenching water in his journey in the south of France. Elzeard chose to live a quiet and solitary life and took it upon himself to plant trees and restore the green life in the valley until his dying day. The narrator described Elzeard as a man who need not utter words unnecessarily perhaps because his sublime and noble work would speak eloquently for himself. Every single day of his life was dedicated to the backbreaking mission of gathering all sorts of seeds, germinating them, and planting the seedlings in different parts of the valley – tasks which were seemingly futile, fruitless and unrewarded. Over the next few decades, the narrator made several visits to the valley and witnessed how Elzeard pursued tirelessly his daily mission of planting trees without a fanfare but in serenity, simplicity, humility, confidence and fortitude. By that time, what was once a desolate, dry and barren valley was now a green and dense forest teeming with wildlife and from which streams of fresh water gently flowed down to nearby drought-stricken villages – all through the work of a humble and selfless man. What appeared to be a painstakingly futile, lonely and impossible mission of a man has ultimately paid off – the transformation of a barren desert into a valley of life for many generations to cherish. There is so much that researchers like you and I can learn from this story as we convene for the first IAMURE International Conference on Multidisciplinary Research. Reflecting deeply on the conference theme, “Towards the Achievement of Peace, Development, and Unity in Asia: The Role of Multidisciplinary Research”, and discerning our contributions as academic scholars towards this seemingly daunting goal, may we all be reminded of the exemplary work of The Man Who Planted Trees. This man showed us the value of hard work and perseverance in pursuit of noble and sublime aspirations. Our individual research work may appear to others as distant from the goal of building a better world. Our research work may appear fruitless, irrelevant, and worse, require us to think and write in solitude as we pursue a research topic that may be considered bereft of any immediate social or economic benefit or value. However, it is that humble faith that our work offers even the tiniest contribution to the expansion of knowledge that gives justice and meaning to what we do. It is the congregation of small contributions to knowledge that advances our understanding of society on which our generation and the next will build as we relentlessly seek knowledge towards peace, development and unity in the world. We may find ourselves unrewarded, isolated, tired and unrecognised for the research that we do. However, may we find solace and inspiration from Elzeard’s work which demonstrates that when we remain steadfastly focused on what we do, excel quietly in one’s field, and never lose faith and fortitude that our humble work will inform the scholarly inquiry of our peers and those who will come after us, then we should be proud to wear the badge of honour sparkling with humility - knowing that we have ‘planted trees’ for a better society for all. May all of us come to the ICMR 2014 conference with a few ‘trees’ of knowledge to share and leave with a renewed mission to keep planting some more…day after day just like The Man Who Planted Trees.

message Dear Distinguished Participants, WELCOME TO THE International Conference on Multidisciplinary Research (ICMR 2014) held in Hong Kong October 17-18, 2014. The theme chosen is the most appropriate one when it is related to our region in Asia and our diversity in any aspects. This theme is “Towards the Achievement of Peace, Development, and Unity in Asia: The Role of Multidisciplinary Research.” It has been our responsibility to promote peace, both as researchers and intellectuals living in different regions in this world. As we have come from different countries with different perspectives, we still have to be in unity because our God created us, as we believe together, for doing our best for all of us as human beings. When we work in peaceful atmosphere, we can achieve our best performance in doing our research and other academic activities. There is nothing can be done with the best achievement when it is done exclusively, by ignoring God’s other creatures in this world. In other words, being inclusive people can get more knowledge and skills as well as state-of-the art strategies in doing anything related to our professions. And, this forum is our best place for that purpose. Ladies and Gentlemen, Multidisciplinary research has semantically represented our community here as diversity in unity. We may come from different perspectives with different experiences. These perspectives and experiences are of course blended with our cultures and social values. However, these attributes, we believe, will become our strengths to be our existence, as a strong intellectual community that is IAMURE. As I myself have witnessed during my involvement in this intellectual association so far, I have learned a lot of precious things for both improving my knowledge and skills and increasing my awareness of being our God’ creature. Without getting in touch with others, we cannot benchmark our performance of being the real researchers and intellectuals. Therefore, this IAMURE is the best of all as I have even seen. Wherever we live and wherever we work, we have to live and work in harmony. Peace is the key success to doing the best job in our lives. Research can be in different fields of science from different perspectives from different regions throughout Asia. However, we believe that the results can be beneficial for others, for improving knowledge and skills related to methodologies, theories, and perhaps the strategies of having the best achievement. This is another milestone for the research world as researchers in the fields of education; business, engineering and sciences gather together and share findings of their research in areas considered as pillars of development of the country. IAMURE as always manifests sturdy knowledge management in its conferences. This time, it responds with the needs of our time with the conference theme, “Education for Regional Economic Integration.” Indeed, education is the thread that ties all factors up for economic integration of the region. We are no longer just looking within the country, but we are also finding means of reaching out and integrating our efforts to grow and develop as a region. Data and information are conscientiously gathered, and they are not coming just as products of wild imaginations. These are findings tested from sound methodologies. message ASEAN 2015 IS coming very soon. It has received mixed reactions from different sectors including the academe. Some of the schools are threatened; others saw it as an opportunity. Moreover, issues on relevancy, adaptability and competitions are surely felt. Many schools find themselves with no other recourse but to put themselves in the position where they have to face realities with a positive outlook daring to be playing a major role not only in the country it is based but throughout the region. Research has never been threatened. Research is one of the unifying factors which in return play a vital role in the integration of the countries in the region. It is not only a necessity but a vital tool for any plan and action within the region to be materialized. Today, any worthy endeavor especially in the larger scale cannot be realized, if the intention is really for the benefit of humanity, without hard data drawn through carefully and scientifically done research. The issues on peace, development and unity in the region will find their way through annals of history as the best contributions of the ASEAN countries to the world. But before we fully experience and enjoy such dream, we need to strengthen our intellectual capital coupled with the right values and dedication of truly Asian race. With the theme “Towards the Achievement of Peace, Development, and Unity in Asia: The Role of Multidisciplinary Research”, IAMURE once again has proven its thrust of making Asian researches relevant and needed for the development of countries throughout the world. message THIS IS INDEED an immense opportunity for an ORCID ambassador to publicize ORCID in a prestigious research conference. In behalf of the ORCID community, we are gratified to be acknowledged by IAMURE through its diligent staff and dynamic President Dr. Genaro Japos. ORCID stands for “Open Researcher & Contributor ID”. It provides a registry of unique researcher identifiers and a transparent method of linking research activities and outputs to these identifiers. ORCID is unique in its ability to reach across disciplines, research sectors and national boundaries. It is a hub that connects researchers and research through the embedding of ORCID identifiers in key workflows, such as research profile maintenance, manuscript submissions, grant applications and patent applications. In the publishing community, ORCID identifiers are used for authors and reviewers. This enables persistent and trusted digital connections between researchers and their work. Journal articles are a time-tested venue for sharing research results. ORCID identifiers are being integrated into the metadata schemas and submission workflows to ensure accurate attribution. In addition, publishers are starting to ask reviewers for their ORCID identifier and use ORCID linkages to qualify reviewers. We have been working with CASRAI to define a metadata standard for citing a peer review activity and when the specification is completed later this summer, will be working to support the acknowledgement of these activities that are so important for ensuring quality and accountability of published research findings. Research funders are also interested in learning about connections between researchers, works, and organizations and in particular the organizations that fund the research. Understanding these connections helps the funder evaluate the impact of their funding programs. We are starting to see funders integrate ORCID identifiers into the grant application workflow process, grantee profile records and over time funders have indicated a willingness to pull information from ORCID records to support components of the post-award reporting process, providing a more seamless process for the applicant and means to track applications, involved researcher, awards and research outputs a key goal of the UMetrics project. These linkages support data-driven research policy, reduce the time researchers spend responding to evaluation queries, and free up time to work on the project itself rather than the paperwork that currently engulfs grants. These examples show how combining persistent identifiers for the researcher, their contributions, and the related facilities and universities can enable us to determine provenance. For each persistent identifier linked to an ORCID record, there is explanatory metadata, information on source, and whether the connection is a self-claim or third-party claim. This information is available through the ORCID user interface and through our APIs, so anyone consuming the information can make a trust determination based on their particular needs. message REGIONAL ECONOMIC INTEGRATION of the ASEAN countries is the penultimate treasure chest. Creating a single and unified market with over 600 million people producing an aggregate annual gross domestic product exceeding 2 trillion US dollars would unleash the immense economic potential of the region. Yet, the primal distinguishing feature of ASEAN is DIVERSITY. With the spectra of differences among the member countries that include, ideology, government, land area and geographic dispersion, religion, degrees of economic development, education, population size, language and culture, to mention a few, this treasure chest could remain in the realm of fantasy. Nonetheless, the ASEAN dream will happen by force of sheer necessity, by the compelling imperative of survival, by the deliberate formation of a common vision and the acceptance by the ASEAN people of a common regional destiny. The 2nd Global Conference in Education, Business, Engineering and Sciences (GCEBES 2014) embarked under the auspices of the IAMURE Multidisciplinary Research is a miniaturization of what should be done in ASEAN in these challenging times: bring together and engage the hearts and minds of the intelligentsia such as educators, economists, business researchers, engineers, scientists and provide a forum where they can speak and uphold their truths. I wish to mention with particularity the vision of Genaro V. Japos, Ph.D, President of IAMURE Multidisciplinary Research that is in perfect synchronicity with the ASEAN vision that must be. What must be above, so must it be below. Nothing great can happen in the ASEAN, if in our individual minds we do not make ASEAN happen. In a world of exponentially growing complexity, Research presents itself as an epic march for Truth, and Truth is our only unfaltering bridge to Freedom. message NO MATTER WHAT perspective one looks, the fact is that our world is incessantly evolving. With that being said, the human race is expected to acclimatize to the changing environment, as what we have done over the thousands of years of our existence. And as we pace our adaptation, we face a prodigious demand for high-impact research that touches various fields of study. This, and our hardwired curiosity, is the only certainty as we tread ahead the path of the future. Our groundwork in education has been key in every aspect of our survival. Though other fields have been touched more, research in education is essential while we try to integrate ourselves with our varying setting. Key improvements and implementation such as educational systems such as the K-12 education and Outcomes Based Education are vital to our teaching techniques. With most confidence we can say that learning is as human is breathing, that is why we should always be at par with the way we learn and acquire new information, knowledge and the likes. Another ground that we should give stress on is the way we do handle business while taking important points on what is currently happening in our economy. Through the awareness of our different economic stand point, we are pushed to our boundaries to be able to familiarize ourselves with the demands and needs of the current locale. With this as a known fact, it is not only a need to focus on research in business, it becomes a necessity for us. As the world revolves around trade and industry, not to mention our depleting resources, we are laden with the burden of being on-point with our knowledge in cost-cutting and economy. On the other hand, we can never eliminate the essence of engineering and sciences in every aspect of living. Science has a way of finding itself embedded in the human heart. This may be because of our internal and unsatisfied curiosity on things, our angst to find a way to a solution, and how to innovate it. This is what engineering stands for. What is most meaningful is that we share the same inquisitiveness through the years, which is why I am quite confident that we will strive forward doing the same innovation we have always done. The human race has always flourished in finding themselves lost but found. This is what research symbolizes. Simply put, to study and research is human. At some days we find ourselves observing, seeing, sensing. And at one point we may find ourselves tinkering on some relation of this and that because of what we have seen. We are at the forefront of everything else, we founders of civilization. It is only apt to continue thriving in this challenging world. Keep sensing, keep challenging, keep making a mark. Let your mind speak.

message ON BEHALF OF the entire PAIR community, I wish to congratulate IAMURE Multidisciplinary Research as it holds the International Conference on Multidisciplinary Research (ICMR 2014) and the 2nd Global Conference on Education, Business, Engineering, and Sciences (GCEBES 2014) in Hongkong! Throughout the history, research has been conducted to improve the lives of the population. Thus, affirming theories and stocking relevant knowledge for global utilization. Research studies have contributed major breakthroughs in certain areas of science, medicine, and technology which were utilized to solve pressing issues in the society. Nowadays, the world is confronted with challenges that threaten humanity and the environment; the emergence of Ebola virus, terrorism in the Middle East, climate change that is due to global industrialization, corruption, among others. This conference is a perfect venue for everyone to listen and be heard. The most trending issues will be presented and discussed by scholars from different parts of the globe. A simple union of data, concepts, methodologies and perspectives from various disciplines can lead to global innovation. s it was once quoted by a Chinese Philosopher, Lao-Tzu, “ A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Through teaching research and mentorship of students as well as professionals, University of Cebu funnels world class researchers, remarkably seen in its research involvement not only in the Philippines but in the whole world. My commitment and dedication play important contribution to research. It gave a definitive sense of direction and inspiration not only to my colleagues but also to the world scientific community. I am fortunate to have a friend, who pushed me to embrace the once called indefinite research world. Dr. Amparado’s genuine willingness to persuade me in my early research career, mold and enlighten me to be compassionate, to share and cascade to my colleagues and students the remarkable enthusiasm for research. And forever, I am indebted to the University of Cebu administration for its usual support when I embarked on these unwavering challenges. However, these drives would not be possible without the support of my Alay sa Diyos Community, my family and friends. y research focuses on several areas of importance to my university, my community, my country and the world at large: corporate social responsibility, services marketing and retailing, and the application of emerging technologies to business problems. This research has focused broadly on the areas described above including: corporate social responsibility, race and gender discrimination in the retail environment, consumer evaluation of corporate behavior, and consumer privacy. I feel that my corporate social responsibility research (in the form of corporate shared value) has been my greatest contribution. Corporate social responsibility is a very important topic, particularly in Asia, where a number of scandals have had unfortunate consequences on humanity, the environment, and the reputations of the companies involved. By encouraging the adoption of socially responsible behaviors by corporations, my research has the potential to make a great impact on society by improving working conditions and reducing the environmental consequences of business operations. My research has been influenced most by a former professor, a former dean, and a current colleague. Dr. Jay Aronson was my principal academic advisor in my PhD program at the University of Georgia, and his advice and direction got me excited about academic research. Dr. Ronald Hill, a former dean, sparked my interest in corporate social responsibility research and Dr. Todd Shank, a current colleague, helped me to put that interest into practice on a number of past and current projects. Recent studies show that corporations have not seen much bottom line impact from the implementation of corporate social responsibility initiatives. This has created some hesitancy on the part of companies in terms of implementing policies that are socially and environmentally responsible. I would hope that I can make a difference in the area of corporate social responsibility research by promoting a new paradigm: corporate shared value. Corporate shared value is a proven method of implementing socially responsible corporate behaviors while simultaneously improving a companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bottom line profitability. Because of their positive influence on corporate profits, businesses have a built in incentive to develop corporate shared value strategies. By developing and promoting corporate share value strategies, I hope that my research can encourage companies to do their part in making the world a better place.

t all starts with a twist of mind and a spot of inspiration. Incessantly, your aspirations are constantly fueled by vast knowledge as you soar high – not for yourself, but for the benefit of the community. I learned these conglomerate of ideas from my “significant others” as I mature. I always firmly believe that everything in this world is psychological so I took up psychology starting from my collegiate degree up to my PhD. When I found out that the competition is so uptight and there is a great need for faculty in business from the field of psychology to teach subjects in leadership, organizational behavior, business research; among others, I was up to the challenge and obtained my Post-doctoral in Management at Freeman Business School, Tulane University in Louisiana (USA), a leading US-based institution accredited by the Advanced Association to Collegiate Schools of Business (headquartered in Florida, USA). Rolling back the hands of time, having been raised in an impoverished family of educators (my mother is an elementary teacher and my father is a trainer in the military) back in the Philippines, it unearthed that knowledge through education is an essential aspect to reach one’s goals and make a difference in our respective countries, workplaces, and homes. Invariably, the universal fact is that for one to educate others you need to be educated; for you to stand out as an educator, you need to have the strong heart and heightened passion to serve.

Upon internalizing the value of education as the key to alleviate poverty, I ended up sourcing scholarships as early as high school and had entered into part-time job as writer in a daily newspaper. Fortunately, I landed a job for five years in corporate world as a human resource management executive after graduating in college. Then, I saw myself in the portals of teaching organizational psychology, later on in the business and management fields. I was an undergraduate faculty in the Philippines

for almost eight years gaining several merits for teaching excellence. Being in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) for almost seven years, I found myself serving a populace of top-brass educators and students from more than 100 countries across the globe. At the top of these experiences, I felt that the corporate world served as a solid training ground so that I can teach something concrete – based from first-hand experience that will pave the way to eclectic and more pragmatic approach. In the process of engaging myself to academics, in my retrospection, a kaleidoscope of reasons are unveiled why effective teaching reaches its peak – it happens when you do not cease discovering. Research in this case, is an indispensable tool for learning. My groundwork researches began in 2001 wherein the major theme of emotional intelligence at work becomes an impetus of vibrant soft skills to connect well with people and perform better. It has enabled me to transform my research findings into usable tool for strategic staffing, training and development, and career planning across people’s positions in any organizations. For example, emotional intelligence is a salient feature of success in becoming a leader; therefore, there must be a related human resource management program. Apart from incorporating the results of my research in my corporate work, I have consciously designed an approach in teaching that can allow me to connect well with my students – that is, being an emotionally intelligent teacher. I have conducted several seminar-workshops in the corporate and academic settings in the Philippines and the Middle East on how to hone emotional intelligence and the role of such variable in enhancing job performance and work values. Apart from gaining citations from refereed research publications, it is indeed an honor to be cited and be the source of information in leading newspapers in the UAE containing passages of research-based excerpts of my previous work that yields wide readership (Gulf News, July 2013; Gulf Today, March 2014; Kabayan Weekly, May 2014; and The Filipino Times, August 2014). Just recently, besting the Outstanding Asian Faculty in Human Resource Management Award sponsored by the 2014 Asian Education Leadership, World Education Congress, and Emirates National Bank in Dubai captured my contributions in the field of teaching, research, and corporate consulting. Taking home the Outstanding Faculty in Research tilt in 2013 awarded by my current organization Canadian University of Dubai opened research collaborations and grants with MultiMedia University-Malaysia at unimaginable peak.

Being an editor in several refereed research publications is part of my commitment and dedication to my craft. This radiates community service and social responsibility. It further gives shapes to teaching and research in so many ways which is vital to unlimited practice. In this light, I actively serve IAMURE Multidisciplinary Research Journal, The Journal of Eastern European and Central Asian Research, The International Journal of Business and Management Research, Asian Business Journal and Governance, and The International Review of Social Sciences and Humanities. To update myself in the field, I efficiently served as the Executive Director of the Afro-Asian Psychological Association in the past years. I currently hold active associate fellowship Society for Human Resource Management, Academy of International Business, European Psychological Association, Philippine Guidance and Counseling Association, Inc., and Psychological Association of the Philippines. Eventually, these laurels are not meant to boost my confidence and the seal of excellence at work alone. I am at a vantage point of challenging young minds and prepare them for something big – bigger than what they can think of.

I adhere to the belief that to inspire is to become. To transform minds is to have the heart to serve. After all, it is not enough as always that you are just smart. We all need to spell a difference in the students’ lives. Lastly, I want to be remembered as an educator who has not just instilled skills but also inculcated virtues of integrity among students, young and old-alike. By transcending research into the core of teaching competencies as part of social responsibility, I hope to create more ethical workforce of leaders. This is my calling. This is me. This is why I exist.

ith all humility, I can say that I have contributed in the improvement of physics education, both in terms of content and the teaching-learning process, in my home country, the Philippines. I have conducted a number of studies on constructivism as applied in college physics instruction. My dissertation on the constructivist approach is one of the pioneering studies on constructivism in the country I continue to conduct research on science education. I am a part of the Philippine Physics Society, which gives me opportunities to share expertise and research findings to physics educators and students in the country. I consider my published research outputs as my greatest contributions to the world scientific community. These publications are humble contributions to the expanding literature and knowledge in the field of science education, which may benefit teachers and students as well as other researchers. Specifically, some of my works promote the innovative and studentcentered constructivist teaching approach which is now recognized as a better alternative to the traditional lecture-discussion method. Through the constructivist strategy, students attain a better understanding of concepts and principles and thus a meaningful learning, and are able to actively construct knowledge. In this method, studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; conceptions in physics are properly addressed and are effectively changed to scientifically accepted conceptions. I recognize that many factors have contributed to the achievement of my present status as a researcher. The University of Northern Philippines, as my Alma Mater for college education, and later as employer, has been very supportive to my research undertakings, from conducting simple investigatory projects in high school, writing thesis and doctoral dissertation, presenting and publishing research outputs, and research mentoring to students and young faculty members. Such strong support has motivated me to continue doing research for knowledge expansion and solution of problems. I also acknowledge the contributions of my other Alma Maters and the agencies that supported my advanced studies.

My knowledge in physics and research skills were sharpened when I pursued my master’s degree in the University of the Philippines and my doctoral degree in De la Salle University under scholarships granted by the Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute, Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges and the Fund for Assistance to Private Education. At present, I serve as Vice President for Student and External Affairs and I lead student affairs practitioners in the conduct of research on the implementation and impact of student services. In addition to this administrative function, I handle advanced research and statistics subjects for graduate students. With such role as mentor, I continue to improve my research skills and share expertise to my students. In the university, I continue to contribute in developing an excellent research culture. On a personal note, my wife and four children have a common interest in field of natural sciences and in the conduct of research. In fact, all of us have experienced conducting and presenting investigatory projects in local, regional and national competitions. Thus, even at home, I serve as research mentor and leader. My family inspires me to achieve a better quality of research endeavours. I believe that every person was born with a purpose. I would say that I was born to become a teacher and a leader, and be able to touch the lives of my fellowmen. I see myself as a lifelong learner and an achiever. Having experienced a very simple life in my childhood, I dreamt of becoming a professional who would make a difference in the lives of others. I worked hard to attain this goal utilizing God’s given talents and abilities coupled with good moral and spiritual values. As a young instructor, I had the aspiration to accelerate my professional growth and development. I achieved advanced education from premiere universities in the country, and eventually became a full-fledge professor and an executive university official at a relatively young age. Other people would agree that I have shown dedication in my work and the passion to excel despite my limitations, and have built a strong family. My contributions in the young people’s journey to assimilate knowledge and develop research skills, critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, and later become professionals, with some expected to accomplish more than what I achieved, may not be forgotten by those whose lives I may have touched. My humble life and works may provide a good example for others to emulate. Hopefully, the younger generation will consider such example as a simple legacy that somehow will have relevance on their lives.

lobal energy problems continue to pose long term negative impacts all over the world, and therefore the international scientific community faces important issues regarding the proper management and efficient use of energy resources. Thus, development of new industrial technologies like superconductivity could play a major role in addressing these issues. Recently, electric devices have been fabricated using high temperature superconducting (HTS) tapes. However, these tapes will be subjected to various kinds of stresses/strains during fabrication or operation. It should be noted that just a little mechanical strain can cause a large drop in the maximum current carried by these tapes. It is therefore important to assess the strength of HTS tapes for practical device applications. My research has been focused on the basic research of evaluating the electro-mechanical properties of superconducting tapes. I am currently a faculty member at the College of Engineering and Architecture of Bataan Peninsula State University. I hold a B.S. in Industrial Engineering

degree from Saint Louis University, Baguio City, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Andong National University, South Korea. I have been a research associate while pursuing my graduate degrees from the year 2003 to 2008. Last year, I finished a one-year Postdoctoral Research Training at Andong National University, where I also served as an Adjunct Professor in the Graduate School teaching the course Applied Superconductivity Engineering. The focus of my research include: electro-mechanical properties of superconductors, mechanical properties of engineering materials, pressurization tests of HTS tapes, numerical simulation of mechanical properties of HTS tapes, development of HTS test coils, and statistical analysis of the mechanical behavior of reinforced REBCO CC tapes. I was a recipient of several research grants from the (1) National Research Foundation of Korea for my Post-doctoral training Program,

I also received scholarships from Andong National University during my graduate studies. From the time I started studying in Korea up to now, I have already published several Peer-Reviewed articles to highimpact international journals such as Superconductor Science and Technology, IEEE Transactions on Applied Superconductivity, Physica C, Cryogenics, Journal of KIASC, PSAC journal, and KIEEME Journal. With these publications, I have been able to contribute to the body of knowledge in the applied superconductivity field. These research articles have already been cited in International Journal Publications by noted scientists and researchers in the fields of superconductivity, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, materials engineering, physics and cryogenics. My publications have been used for the research and development of high temperature superconducting tapes produced in Korea as well as in other parts of the world. These citations are a testament to the important results and findings my research activities generate. Publication to high impact journals, which is the goal of many scientists and researchers, should be coupled with the deeper desire to have a lasting impact on the lives of the people around us. I believe that maximum impact could only be achieved if an activity results to positive change. As a responsible scientific researcher and faculty member, I have my own ways of promoting Scientific Research Culture at least in my sphere of influence. To start with, I have been taking part as a peer-reviewer of the IEEE Transactions on Applied Superconductivity Journal. Also, I, together with my colleagues in BPSU, have advised numerous undergraduate theses. We have also submitted several patent applications to BPSU’s Innovation and Technology Support Office (ITSO). In the Research Methods Course that I teach to Engineering students, I teach my students to always apply the Engineering Design process which starts with the identification of a problem and ends with the best engineering design as a possible solution. I have guided our students in terms of Research Proposal Writing, Computer-Aided Design, Computer-Aided Engineering, Intellectual Property Rights including Patent Drafting, Research Presentation, and Ethics in Research. Additionally, I have been frequently invited to judge/screen research projects in the fields of engineering and technology. I enjoy teaching, doing research, swimming, running, playing basketball, playing musical instruments like the violin and guitar, as well as learning new things. I would like to be remembered as a person who has a balanced life, and does everything with passion and enthusiasm. xtraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence”, words attributed to Carl Sagan, and let me add, extraordinary things happen when ordinary people put extra effort on their action, give extra dynamics on their endeavor. From this point of view, I seem to be the person of remarkable integrity as ordinary person vying for this extraordinary claim, putting myself forward for the outstanding research leader. And all I’m armed with is my research. I might have started late, as others in my age have already gone far and better-off. I have set my hands on too many blueprints before which may be good to bring to fruition but I failed on the virtue of hitting the marks because I have not been attentive to minute details. I began deliberating, and to be more painstaking. It is now then on my slow but sure step that is making a way for me to go in top; it is on my deliberate but infallible moves that assure me of a winning spot. I patiently waited, but keep on going, in no way I envied and felt aggrieved for those who have gone beyond me for I know that there is time for everything and my time will come perfectly. True indeed, great things start from small beginnings, as long as you keep going and doing and live by faith and commitment, with mind that is in the moment – focusing in what you are doing, when you are doing it. Henry Miller once said that “the moment one gives close attention to anything, even a blade of grass becomes a mysterious, awesome, indescribably magnificent world in itself.” It was from this that I began to realize how my sincerest attention and appreciation in the hushed life of the Ayta Magbukon, one the indigenous people of the Philippines brought me to the edge. I find personal inclination as to their way of life that made me inspired to study how the preservation of their culture be realized. Indigenous knowledge and skills seem in danger of being lost and their cultural heritage will vanish if not given support as to its preservation and existence. Through the Ayta Magbukon School of Living Traditions, there was a realization of the community that they are unique as human being but they are epitome of true Filipino. Bringing this paper internationally paves the way for other indigenous people across the globe to have high

hopes that their own community, their own culture and traditions be revived and be freed from discrimination or inferior consideration. This I believe, had been my most important input and involvement – giving light to seemingly unimportant individuals and existences. It is a well-known verity that human beings are judged by their deeds. Of no objection, the most significant deeds of individuals are their experience and accomplishments in life. I was not born with a silver spoon; I’m too far from being it, having just sufficient and at times inadequate resources to live in day. But this reality had not stopped me from pursuing my great dream. I believe that “If you don’t like something, change it; if you can’t change it, change your attitude, don’t complain.” In the event that we don’t want to stay in the life that we never want, then we should do something to change it. Should there be something that we can’t change, and then we must see and check our own life, our personality, our character, our values. My parents and family had always been my greatest inspiration as they were able to let me understand that difficulties of life can shape me into what I was really meant to be – a simple person who can do extraordinary accomplishments. They have been always there to support and been forbearing at those times that I need to spend overnights with my paper and pen and to be away with them for quite some times. It must have been my shortcoming for them should they have curbed their patience and understanding. But I was so grateful that they never break down and faltered on loving me. The Bataan Peninsula State University, with its vision and mission to be globally competitive in terms of human resources had opened the way for me to be moving on at length. My full potential as researcher was built-up and established. I was given the break when all things are set and chances favor the prepared mind. I found it interesting when Braun said “Research is what I am doing when I don’t know what I am doing”. I found it even so profound that at those times I think I’m lost, research had been my light and direction, research provided long-run standpoint on the concerns that I face on a day-to-day basis. And I will always put my hand and my heart on research for I believe that research shares and distributes knowledge and expertise in a credible and resounding way. It is then my conviction and my attitude, I’m not here merely to make a living. I am here to enable the world to live more wholly, with pronounced vision, with finer essence of hope and achievement. I am here to enrich the world (especially this simple and modest place where I belong). The out of school youths, adults and other beneficiaries were motivated to learn the concepts of automotive electricity using these devices. It’s a great rewarding accomplishment that you empowered people in the community by developing their skills and technicalknow-how through technology transfer using these devices which are products of research. Imbuing others by honing their potentials as competent technical men is my most important contribution to the scientific community.

To be an instrumental person for the realization of the divine purpose of creation by the Almighty God is the main reason of my existence in this world. Improving one’s life by means of technology transfer effectively using research generated devices is a defined modality in achieving this purpose. I always believe on the old saying that “It is better to teach people how to catch fish than to give them fish, because they would live for the rest of their lives. Research output should not be kept for personal gain; it should be published and be disseminated widely to benefit more individuals perpetually. I would rather want to be an inspiration than to be a disgrace to others.

Conducting research, for me is an “addictive” and rewarding, especially that there are support from the University in terms “release hour” from teaching, technical and financial for supplies and materials, honorarium and travel allowances for paper presentations locally and internationally. THE THEME FOR this year’s ICMR and GCEBES are “Towards the achievement of Peace, Development, and Unity in Asia: the Role of Multidisciplinary Research” and “Education for Regional Economic Integration” respectively. The four words, Integration, Unity, Peace and Development, are all interconnected. Especially peace, which is essential for development, may have a different meaning 100 years ago. It could also have a different meaning 70 years ago during and after World War II. Back then, a research project by the Allied countries called the “Manhattan Project” developed the atomic bombs. Then using those bombs, the Allied countries bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August of 1945, which seemed to be a brilliant military strategic move because the bombings accomplished their goal of ending the war and eventually brought peace, although up to now the ethical justification of the bombings are still debated. Greetings from Bataan - The last bastion of freedom during World War II!

And now, 2014, World Peace has a different meaning. It is peace that should transcend all ages, races, religions, cultures, and countries with the ever-increasing speed of globalization. Now, in addition to threats of war among different countries, different battles against disease, poverty, homelessness, discrimination, and marginalization arise. These are coupled with problems that we have to face regarding energy, global warming, environmental degradation, natural and man-made disasters, as well as pollution of all kinds. It is ideal that we achieve peace, development and unity altogether, but the aforementioned pressing issues are big hurdles to overcome.

ICMR and GCEBES, provide a venue for researchers/ scientists to know the latest discoveries in research and forge collaborations with researchers abroad. In this conference, we may not have to discuss atom bombs, chemical bombs, state-of-the-art artillery, or war equipment/accessories. But we can discuss about food, social issues, processing technologies, and etc. These topics, although very far from the atom bombs which facilitated the end of the war, are of equal importance as they answer basic problems regarding poverty, marginalization, education, etc. It is just fitting to congratulate all participants for a job well done doing research, as well as presenting here at ICMR 2014. As Lady Gaga puts it, “I work all day, do research, sketch my ideas, prepare for performances.” With ICMR and GCEBES 2014, IAMURE continues to uphold its tradition of combining science, glamor, arts, and culture in conducting its conferences and sets it apart from all others. Here is a brief summary of the papers presented: On education, one paper focused on ICT-Based Lessons, while another reported on ways of utilizing films in teaching literature to students. Another study was focused on determining the level of exposure to mass media of students and its relation to their reading proficiency. Another one reported on conceptual change by exposing students to a constructivist small-group learning intervention. Still, another study reported on the performance in history of the students focusing on cognitive and affective skills along political, socioeconomic and cultural components. Another study determined the performance of engine cadets on shipboard training and their perception on the training structure. Lastly, one paper explores the characteristics of effective teaching frames as perceived by students. On Biology, several papers reported on the development and evaluation of silkworms using various methods. Another study focused on the evaluation of the yield performance of mushroom as affected by different planting spawns. One paper on Technology/Computer Studies reported on the design and development of an alumni database that would provide solutions to problems in tracing alumni. On Engineering, one paper reported on the residual stress in superconductors, while another paper focused on the development of a multi system automotive engine electrical trainer. On technology transfer, one paper focused on the Commercialization of Vertical Fed Biomass Cookstove,

while another focused on the Science and Technology Community-Based Farm on Mango Production. On Social Sciences, one paper focused on the documentation of the existing socio-cultural related collections at hand among a local tribe in the Philippines. Another study was aimed at unveiling the cultural lived experiences of the elderly Filipinos. Another paper focused on the determination of the influence of practices and lifestyles of the street on their personality, expectations and aspirations. Another study was aimed at crafting a development framework appropriate for the indigenous peoples. Still, another study focused on the preservation of the Ayta Magbukon oral tradition as a means of preserving their language. Lastly, one paper focused on the determination of the extent of halal practices in selecting raw materials, preparation, safety, maintenance in the production of Maguindanaon delicacies. On Business and Management, one study examines the corporate shared value model which could be better over the corporate social responsibility model. Another study aims to find out if telecommuting is a determinant of job satisfaction and its relation to traditional work environment. Another study aims to assess the Omanization program and its policies. Lastly, one study aims to determine the role of emotional intelligence on job performance. Neil Armstrong said that “Research is creating new knowledge.” And that is just what all of us have done in this conference, we created new knowledge to pass on to current and aspiring researchers. I hope that the presentation made in this conference is not the end or ultimate goal of everyone. Rather, ICMR and GCEBES 2014 should be a chance to share and present our current research for comments and suggestions before undergoing the peer review process for publication to IAMURE or other journals. The famous poet, Dr. Samuel Johnson, once said that, “The greatest part of a writer’s time is spent in reading, in order to write: a man will turn over half a library to make one book.” This observation by Dr. Johnson emphasizes the need for us to publish our works, in that, for other authors to be able to write just one new book, they need to read a lot of other books and articles. These authors have to gain new knowledge, and they get it from reading validated research works as promoted by IAMURE. As Michael Faraday conveys the secret of his success as a scientific investigator: “The secret is comprised in three words: Work, Finish, Publish.”

Education plays a very significant role in molding individuals that will become assets of the society. The various subjects offered in the schools are contributory for their holistic development. Thus, in any case, it may be reflected through poor performance. This study aimed to find out the level of performance in History and problems they have encountered in learning of the BSEd students of UNP especially on cognitive and affective skills along political, socioeconomic and cultural components. It was anchored on Ausubel’s Cognitive theory and Schema theory. Descriptive design was employed and data were gathered through a teacher-made test and interview guide. The results revealed that performance of the students along the three components is satisfactory. It was disclosed that they poorly perform on socioeconomic component and along knowledge and comprehension. Further, problems met along instruction like poor teaching methods, inefficient and ineffective teachers are primary reasons as to why they poorly performed in History. Based on the findings, students in History would tend to perform well if topics included in the test are well discussed and teaching is well-planned, thus making it interesting. It is then recommended that History instruction and test construction should be carefully planned leading to the development of higher level thinking skills. With the pressing low achievement among students in the face of a highly technologically equipped schools in line with the Department of Education computerization program for secondary schools, the urge to find out whether actual involvement of students in the science curriculum with the use of ICT-based lessons will have significant influence on their conceptual understanding in Biology. This study supported the Department of Education Medium Term Development Plan which envisioned ICT as a development tool to support the teaching-learning process. The quasi-experimental method PretestPosttest control group design with matching was used which involved 74 second year high school students. The validated teacher-made test was used to measure the conceptual understanding of the students and the use of ICT-based lessons as a teaching tool. Students in both ICT-Based and non-ICT-Based groups significantly improved, however, students in the ICT-based group improved better than non-ICT-based group in their conceptual understanding of the human body systems. On the other hand, the students strongly favored the use of ICT-based lessons as teaching tool. With the result of this study, those interested in the secondary science teaching must recognize the potential of Information and Communication Technologies when these are incorporated in the teaching and learning process. In considering the nature of performance management and performance appraisal, there is a need to appreciate how these two aspects are related but equally should not be seen synonymously. This study determined the performance of engine cadet on shipboard training and their perception on the training structure implemented by the company. It utilized a descriptive research design using the evaluation tool from the shipboard training office for cadet shipboard evaluation. The chief engineer evaluated the performance of the cadet on their one year shipboard training based on the personality, technical ability in the control room, main engine, boiler, pumps, Generators, purifier and other skills like bunkering and safety procedures. It also looked into the cadet’s perception on their training structures implemented by the company while they were on board. Results revealed that they have outstanding performance rating. On the other hand, they rated the company with the highest indicator. The high rating they gave for the evaluation of the company indicated that they were assisted, trained and accommodated well. REBCO-based Coated Conductor (CC) High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) tapes are now being used for practical device applications such as motors, generators, power cable, etc. The residual stresses and strains induced in the ReBCO coatings in HTS tapes during deposition and cool down from deposition temperature (~1,000 K) to operation temperature (77 K) contributes on its performance, especially the electrical transport property. The stresses occur because of the different thicknesses as well as coefficients of thermal expansion of the REBCO film, buffer layer and substrate materials. In this study, the residual stress/strain induced in the superconducting coating in CC tapes was calculated from deposition temperature to cryogenic temperature by computer simulation using a commercial software. A 2-dimensional analysis has been conducted, where the thicknesses of constituent layers (i.e. Silver, REBCO film, and Hastelloy Substrate) were varied in order to understand the induced residual stress/strain with increasing thickness. The results show that with increasing REBCO thickness, the induced residual stress decreased. On the other hand, when the silver and substrate layers were increased, the induced residual stress increased. The data obtained will be important for the design of coated conductor for practical devise applications. In the future, a 3-dimensional simulation for residual stress analysis would also be important. Databases for alumni are vital to every learning institution. The data and information are needed by the school to communicate, verify, archive and research the alumni. These are also used to validate the gap between the knowledge and skills possessed by the graduates and the required qualifications needed by industries. The study aimed to design and develop an alumni database of the University of Cebu that would provide solutions to problems in tracing alumni. The proposed system would enable users to register as well as generate information for the purpose of tracing the whereabouts of the alumni. The descriptive-developmental method was utilized, and two sets of researchers-made questionnaires were administered to 95 respondents. Percentages, ranks, and weighted means were used in the treatment of the gathered data. The alumni database was developed based on Commission on Higher Education – Graduate Tracer Study survey questionnaire and was tested by the users based on user-friendliness, system security, and accessibility. The study revealed that an alumni database system is by far a better tool, cost-saving, and timesaving mechanism than the traditional method of recording data. It will also streamline the university’s concern for assisting alumni in disseminating relevant developments to other stakeholders around the globe. Starting system, ignition system and charging system are the fundamental electrical systems responsible to engine operation. The automotive technology students found difficulties in installing or connecting the actual wiring circuits; often times resulted to damages in charging system components. Hence, this multi system automotive engine electrical trainer was developed through the R & D Process to enhance the knowledge and skills of automotive technology students through simulation of troubleshooting, connecting or installing the auto engine electrical wiring circuit. The data gathered were treated statistically using weighted mean and t-test. The study revealed that the trainer utilized the generated electricity by the charging system driven by a 220VAC motor instead of a petrol engine to provide economic advantage and avoid air pollutants. It is technically advantageous as an instructional device in developing concepts on how engine electricity works and how the circuits are connected. It likewise facilitates the teaching-learning process on troubleshooting such as open and short circuits, charging/ starting/ ignition system connection and defective components. Development of Double Cross Silkworm Hybrids CRISTETA F. GAPUZ

Six bivoltine silkworm lines (DMMMSU 100, DMMMSU 101, DMMMSU 102, DMMMSU 103, DMMMSU 115 and DMMMSU 107) were used for double cross combinations at the Sericulture Research and Development, Institute, DMMMSU, Bacnotan, La Union from 1993 to 1997. The Analysis of Variance in CRD was used to test the significance of genotypic differences between the different combinations. Hybrids with significant differences were further subjected to double cross analysis by Rawlings and Cockerham (1962). Results of combining ability tests for double-cross disclosed that lines DMMMSU 100, DMMMSU 101, DMMMSU 115, and DMMMSU 107 were good general combiners for fecundity. Yield Performance of Volvariella volvacea as Affected by Planting Spawns Derived Pure Culture of Indigenous Growing Media RINA Q. PAGUIA

The study aimed to evaluate the yield performance of mushroom (Volvariela volvacea) as affected by different planting spawn derived from pure culture (F1) leguminous plant substrate. Bedding materials were prepared with dried banana leaves, bamboo and sawdust and were treated as potato agar substrate (control/T1), malunggay (T2), madre de cacao (T3) and ipil-ipil (T4). Data were evaluated using completely randomized design with four (4) treatments of three replications. Gathered data were subjected to analysis variance using DMRT to compare the difference of treatment means. Results showed that the average number days from spawning to appearance of pinhead were significantly shorter from spawn inoculated with PDA based F1 substrate and Madre de Cacao substrate. The treatment group presented in Table 1 revealed that the number of days from pinhead to button stage was significantly (p>0.5) differ among the treatment. Results suggest that the comparable effect of these F1 based growing media on the length of pinheads development to button stage, the leguminous trees used as substrate to F1 produced planting spawn similar with the PDA based F1 substrate. Further studies can be conducted to test the performance of spawn in different locations with varying temperatures and humidity. Using ethnographic approach, this study focused on the preservation of the Ayta Magbukon oral tradition as a means of preserving their language. Their literary arts are preserved only by oral tradition and being transferred by the elders to younger generation. The researcher is afraid that if these literary arts are not properly documented and published the sooner, it will vanish forever together with their native dialect. Thus, this study is twofold, preserving the language and preserving the oral heritage which have the same impact of importance and has received a great deal of support from many civilized countries including the UNESCO that spent a lot of resources to safeguard the many endangered languages and oral heritage around the world. As this study gains acceptance and credence from both the simple and the prudent, the education and wisdom encompassed in the language under study will have an explicit possibility of incessant transfer to the younger age group, thus, an extensive and positive reception of the culture and its people as a whole. Qualitative and quantitative descriptive research designs using a survey, interview schedule, and photographic technologies as tool in the data gathering from the Manobo key informants and their descendants through purposive and snowball techniques were used. There were 13 items grouped into sports and socio-cultural related collections like implements, musical instruments, apparel and weaving product and architectural designs with an age range from 30-180 years old were found. Their ethnographic technologies, beliefs and practices have significant value. Relationship exists between age of respondents and their dance and musical instruments and between their traditional sports and socio-cultural traditional beliefs and practices. Manobo tribes are protecting their ethnographic technologies. Extra care and proper handling of such treasure are the responsibility of each member of the tribe with the belief that these are precious and would befall them bad luck if they violate this injunction. Dance and musical instruments including the socio-cultural beliefs and practices have significant value to the Manobo tribes when grouped into age. The study aimed to craft a development framework appropriate for the indigenous peoples. A threepronged method of qualitative inquiry was employed to gather the data. Findings revealed that the current conditions of the indigenous peoples’ development experience in Agusan del Sur is a manifestation of poverty and deprivation as well as destruction of their environment, cultural practices, and values. The indigenous peoples became the collateral damage in the power dynamics between powerful actors in their entering into their communities having the desires to extract resources in their ancestral lands. The study concludes that the government’s neglect of indigenous peoples dreams and aspirations enables other organizations to implement responsive development programs. It also advanced the leftist insurgents indoctrination mechanism which resulted to more conflict and further marginalization of the indigenous peoples. The study recommends that the development workers, businessmen, and various public and private sectors should consider the plights of indigenous peoples in craftingfuture development programs and projects. The secondary data contributed to the change management literature by examining the cultural orientations of Omani employees and by linking them to their preferences of HRM policies and practices in a telecommunication setting. The study reveals that the Omanization policies are introduced to tap human resource management development programs in various areas in both public and private sectors. The Political Economy of Sex: Narratives of Male-to-Female Transgenders in Prostitution on Condom-Use Negotiation for HIV-Transmission-Risks Reduction BERNADETH LUAYON-GERODIAS

Though women used to be the major players, the proliferation of male-to-female (MTF) transgender persons indicates a radical shift in an industry which places public health at risk. Using a narrative approach, this qualitative study explored the experiences of MTF transgender persons in prostitution on condom-use negotiation for HIV-transmission-risks reduction. Five (5) narrators who were least 19 years old and were into prostitution for at least three (3) years were selected through purposive sampling. In-depth audio-recorded narrative interviews were conducted using Balan’s Grid by Tagg (1985) to provide a structure for constructing a story and making sense out of past experiences. Results revealed that environmental factors - lack of policy enforcing condom use, threat of physical abuse from patrons and possibility of losing income – served as barrier to condom negotiation. Aside from posing additional barrier for condom negotiation, personality factors like substance abuse and alcoholism exposed MTF transgender persons to engage in dangerous sex like group barebacking, fisting and felching, hence placed them more at risks for HIV-transmission. It is concluded that policies enforcing condom use among people in prostitution to reduce HIVtransmission-risks should be established. It is recommended that health organizations and establishments in prostitution collaborate to strengthen condom negotiation through public health advocacy. The study employed descriptive-survey method wherein qualitative analysis of data was used. The respondents (n=199) are registered in General Education courses using a pre-constructed interview schedule. The 69 CETs are then ascertained by qualitative method through axial coding of general themes in order to come-up with recommendations pointing to Effective Teaching Program (ETP). The major findings reveal that the three important elements of effective teaching as perceived by students are academic qualification, attitudes, and skills. It is significant to note that there is a balanced number of CET that falls under attitudes and skills. Specific recommendations to ETP are also introduced in the paper to strengthen the quality of teaching effectiveness. It employed mean values to determine the respondents’ level of exposure to mass media and their level of reading proficiency. Pearson-product moment coefficient of correlation was utilized to determine the relationship between their level of exposure to mass media and their reading proficiency. The findings revealed that the students had inadequate or low exposure to mass media on the basis of interest, availability of materials, time spent for their choices and benefits they would receive. However, the level of reading proficiency of DAT students in the vocabulary and comprehension skills was very high with a qualitative description of very good. The level of exposure of the students to both print and electronics/films media was moderately related to reading proficiency as reflected by r=0.452. A significant relationship was divulged between the level of mass media exposure and the reading proficiency of the students. Hence, exposure to the different mass media must be enhanced to further develop the students in their intellectual capacities especially in their reading proficiency skills. It was conducted to ultimately address the gaps on poor productivity of mango sector in Bataan, Philippines through the Integrated Cultural Management (ICM) such as pruning, fertilization, bagging, growth regulators and pest management. The project started after the pre-implementation phase was performed such as; establishment of the STCBF local team, validation of the farmer cooperators, focused group discussion (FGD) with concerned entities while the implementation phase covered the inception meeting with the cooperators, monitoring and evaluation, business meeting, capacity building of the cooperators, technology promotions, marketing assistance and IEC development. The STCBF is composed with 15 ha technology demonstration farms managed by the progressive farmer cooperators of the two mango clusters in the Municipality of Abucay and Balanga City, Bataan, Philippines. The results revealed that the S&T-interventions successfully improved the production and economic performance of the STCBF based on the partial budget analysis with a net gains of Php25,743.00 and Php12,615.00 in Abucay and Balanga City clusters, respectively. The project recommends the wide promotion and adoption of the S&T interventions for sustainable and productive mango industry. Commercialization of Vertical Fed Biomass Cookstove JONATHAN E. LACAYANGA

Commercialization through strategic promotional activities was employed in order to create awareness leading to wider range of acceptance and marketability of the stove. Test stoves made of Galvanized Iron (GI) sheet, concrete, clay and GI combination were distributed to 40 biomass dependent households in the province of Bataan. These households were the source of stoves’ actual performance data that was used to gauge the level of acceptability of each stove designs. Salient features of stove emphasized by the users were lesser fuel consumption, efficient heat utilization, ease and safety to operate and provide extra savings that can be spent for other household expenditures. Significant reduction of smoke inside the kitchen attributed to the extendable chimney of the stove was fairly considered by test users. The study concluded that vertical fed biomass cookstove regardless what material it was made is acceptable to Bataan households provided that cost may further reduced without compromising the quality. Conceptual Change in Thermodynamics and Attitudes of College Students Exposed to a Constructivist Small-Group Learning Intervention: A Case Study MARIO P. OBRERO

The case study found out the extent of conceptual change attained by the students. It also tested whether the extent of conceptual change was significantly influenced by the students’ attitudes towards constructivism, small-group learning, and physics. Conceptual change, indicated by the replacement of an alternative conception by the correct conception, was measured using a misconception test. The students’ attitudes were determined using a set of questionnaires. Results show that most of the initial alternative conceptions held by the students were changed to scientifically accepted conceptions after the intervention. Their posttest scores were found to be statistically higher than their pretest scores. The concept maps they prepared after the intervention showed correctly the relationships among various Thermodynamic concepts. The students had positive attitudes towards constructivism, small-group learning, and physics. They appreciated the intervention and the meaningful learning experience they had. The students’ attitudes significantly influenced their extent of conceptual change. Being effective in promoting conceptual change, the constructivist approach is recommended for use in physics classes. Likewise, halal practices are global concerns for best culture-sensitive products. This study aimed to determine the extent of halal practices in selecting raw materials, preparation, safety, maintenance in the mass production of five (5) Maguindanaon delicacies. The proposed product packaging for commercialization was evaluated by 100 Muslims, nonMuslims and Lumads in Cotabato City, and in the provinces of Maguidanao and Sultan Kudarat. Descriptive research design was employed. Descriptive statistics like mean, frequency count and percentage were used including F-test for significant difference. Results revealed that halal practices on the raw material selection, preparation, safety practices, maintenance and mass production were described as lesser extent like in the selection of glutinous rice and the water mixtures, wrappers, kitchen utensils and food containers in the mass production and commercialization. Banana leaf wrappers are most preferred for Dudol, Panialam, Panganan Sising and Tinadtag. The respondents believed that the proposed packaging design won’t affect the cultural significance of the Maguindanaon rice-based delicacies as complimentary food when these are wrapped in modern design. Existing technology on bed cleaning of silkworm during rearing entails more labor hence contributing high production costs. The study was conducted to determine the best frequency of bed cleaning at different instars. Five bed cleaning frequencies (T1-control, 15 times bed cleaning; T2 – 9 times bed cleaning; T3 – 5 times bed cleaning, T4- 8 times bed cleaning and T5 – six times bed cleaning) served as the treatments. The Analysis of Variance in Completely Randomized Design was used to test the significance between the different bed cleaning frequencies. Results revealed no significant differences among the different frequencies of bed cleaning on all parameters like weight of matured larvae, weight of cocoons, cocoon shell percentage, cocoon yield per box and return on investment. Hence, any of the bed cleaning frequencies can be used for commercial cocoon production. Specifically, the researchers intend to test if there is a significant relationship between the respondents’ (n=85) profile variables and the perception of the individual contributors and supervisors on telecommuting. Likewise, the perception of the respondents on the areas of general management, communications, training and support and rewards and recognitions are ascertained. The study employs descriptive-correlational survey method in assessing the perception of individual contributors and supervisors form ITMI that is currently telecommuting on a regular basis. Major findings reveal that the respondents have better job satisfaction as they practice telecommuting and that they favored this as an alternative work environment over the traditional office set-up. Recommendations are also drawn so that that the industries of today may consider how technology can be of advantage not only for the machineries to improve its productivity and output but most importantly, to the enhancement of the employees’ welfare. The study aims to determine the role of emotional intelligence on job performance among 144 bank managers deployed in the private sector of the Middle East countries such as United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Oman. The demographic profile variables were limited to age, educational attainment, and work tenure. Descriptive, correlational-survey methods were employed to ascertain the demographic profile variables of the respondents and to assess their relationships. The researchers utilized three instruments: Demographic Profile Sheet, Emotional Competence Inventory, and a standard Performance Appraisal for Managers. The study confirms that there is a significant relationship between job performance and the demographic profile variables such as age, and educational attainment but not with work tenure. The findings also reveal that there is a significant relationship between emotional intelligence and job performance.
