University of Liverpool
Batchelor of Architecture - Year 1
The BArch programme at the University of Liverpool, encourages students to carry out their work in groups. This creates a greater design discussion combining a mix of opinions. The group work also simulates professional practice, working as part of a design team.
The work on the next few pages, has been completed by myself and two of my peers,
Jane Burnham Richard Charles Jones
Ian Mellor September 2006 - June 2007
Inner city site: One site, two possibilities Semester One
This project explores the possibilities of an inner city site in Liverpool, close to the University. The brief asked us to develop proposals for two uses on the site:
1.0
Residential Development
2.0 A primary school
The Site: 1: 1250
Inner city site: One site, two possibilities
Prior to commencing the design work for the two projects it was important to carry out some investigation into the site and its context.
Information was gathered from the Census to understand the demographic of the area. At the same time, the character of the wider area was explored and possible future development opportunities noted down.
The Demographic The majority of the population is made up from individuals of a white ethnicity, aged between 20 and 44 with three quarters of that population being of a single status, while only 8% of the populations is within the age range of compulsory education. A quarter are working full time or in studying at University making them economically inactive.
Three quarters of the working population are employed within the professional and administrative sector. The majority of the population are renting properties from Housing Associations and many do not own a car.
The Site: Sub Ward 037C
Road Improvement and Development Opportunities
Inner city site: One site, two possibilities 1.0
Residential Development
The housing scheme has been designed to provide a continuation of the terrace to Chatham Street, however the internal elevation illustrates a less formalised faรงade, creating a series of interesting spaces that open up to an internal courtyard area.
Long internal corridors within the plan have been overcome by using a tower form to accommodate circulation. The lack of corridor spaces and use of shared atrium encourage a sense of community to the development.
The residential scheme looks at combining a mixture of tenures, with the re- introduction of the terrace form providing a structure to Vine Street and help to create a more successful housing type.
The sustainability of the scheme comes with the potential for the garages to be converted into additional living accommodation in the terrace housing, whilst the undercroft parking area could also become enclosed at a later date.

A Primary School
The approach for our school is to break it into 3 key blocks, Community, Administration and Teaching; these are controlled by a series of Primary, Secondary and Tertiary elements.
The Primary shell, defines the basic block, while the skewed secondary elements help to create the tertiary zones. The primary elements are of a substantial construction, whilst the secondary elements sit within this shell on a lighter footprint. The subsequent tertiary zones provide borrowed natural light to penetrate into the plan from an otherwise unpunctuated external faรงade.
The issues of privacy were overcome, by presenting a solid faรงade to the existing street situation. Once within the schools boundaries the openness of the plan allows views across and through the building.
Early urban analysis identified the need to build a sense of community within the area, thus we decided to develop an aspect of the plan that could be used by the local community after the normal school day had finished.

BUILT EDGE
RETAINING WALL
aim: To reinstate the built egde of the northern side, representing the industrial stature of Thornton Road. Similar building types will be built as a continuation of those buildings that still remain. Openings strategically located along the edge will allow access through to the Goit walkways and courtyards.
The retaining wall which currently runs along the south of the masterplan holds back the areas of Bradford such as that of the university and the college.
GOIT WALKWAYS AND COURTYARDS
BRADFORD BECK
This next body of work explores Masterplanning, and the importance of setting up the priniciples of the
aim: The masterplan will incorporate the retaining wall as one of its major edges of the scheme. Activity will take place along, off and within the wall. The matrix building within the master plan will interact with the wall by wrapping up the wall as do the major routes across from Thornton Road.
Masterplan to guide and inform development over a long period of time.
The project is set in Bradford, an old textile town that is situated next to leeds, in the North East of England.
This page shows the breakdown of the various elements that we have explored when considering the outcome of the Masterplan
The Goit was originally the industrial engine of the city, powering all major industrial buildings in Bradford. aim: We plan to regenerate the watrecourse of the Goit, providing a meandering walkway of arcades and open courtyard spaces.
Originally the Beck was used to power the mills of Bradford. It runs the length of Thornton Road and it is partially culverted throughout its route. aim: We plan to expose the Beck along its route. This will divide the urban park and open green spaces along the masterplan. Crossings will be located along the beck allowing access across the park.
GREEN PARK WAY
URBAN PARK
Currently there are only small pockets of open green spaces located within the existing city centre fabric. aim: The masterplan will strip back buildings and developments along Thornton Road, providing a much needed open green park way. The park will define an area between the built commercial edge to the North and the retaining wall to the South.
aim: Along with the green park, the urban landscaping contributes in creating the public realm in and along Thornton Road. Street furniture in the form of 3x3m boxes will be randomly located along its route, providing a variety of activity.

Monument, Civic space
Potential High End Commercial and Cultural Development
A > The city hall has been retained as the monumental building, using its local iconic symbolism to represent Bradford. The city hall forms the focus of our processional route, from the motorway into the centre of Bradford.
C
B > The masterplan looks to demolish the magistrates courts and the police headquarters. The proposal develops three buildings that accommodate all of the council services, the police headquarters and the magistrates, focusing the control of Bradford into a central and identifiable location. The three buildings, gain height, to lead up to and culminate at the city hall, the focus of our journey.
The Masterplan Breakdowm D A
This sheet explains some of our ideas and aspirations for the development areas identified within our
A > Potential High End Commercial and Cultural Development, designed to encourage pedestrian movement through the proposed masterplan area and out to existing parts of Bradford, like the National Film and Photographic Museum, Alhambra theatre and the interchange station. The development, working alongside existing cultural buildings will encourage pedestrian activity throughout the day and night.
A
C > The proposal looks at regenerating the backs of existing retail and leisure facilities to open up and spill out onto the new extended civic space. Sustaining activity with the space both during the day and night.
B
Masterplan.
D > The civic space is to become representative of the new Bradford. The space will be used by the new leisure and retail facilities, all contributing to taking ownership of the space. The civic space will become part of the new council, with monthly farmers markets, food and wine festivals and concerts, with the backdrop being the existing city hall.
33> Proposed Matrix Event Development
44> Proposed Educational Development
A > The Educational Outreach Centre, provides an access to learning facility to people who may have not previously excelled with education.
B A C
B > The matrix elements consists of flexible elements - boxes that require public engagement in order for the space to be defined, these boxes sit next to the retaining wall structure and are intended to be used for markets, temporary exhibitions and performance spaces.
A - The educational development, looks to demolish the existing halls of residence, proposing to relocate them nearer to the other proposed residential developments and strengthening the new university campus that is being developed. The residential development will help to maintain pedestrian movement through the park into the city centre.
A
A C
B - The development looks at extending the university’s campus, with new teaching facilities, to encourage more people into the city and to access the increased educational opportunities. It is hoped the new building will promote and sustain pedestrian activity along the retaining wall and in the park.
B
C > New university building provides new teaching facilities within the existing campus grounds. The new building strengthens the path link that runs through the park and up to the higher level behind the retaining wall.
C - The park will act as part of this extension to university campus as it is large enough to fit a five - a - side football pitch, with the walkway providing a spectator viewing gallery over the park.
56> Proposed Pavilion / Residential Development
6
A > The pavilion forms the finish/ start point to the westerly edge of the masterplan. The pavilion is to provide a flexible performance stage for concerts and exhibitions, that can be adapted to suit crowd sizes whilst the front façade of the pavilion can be opened up to transform the performance/ stage area.
A
The Goit, a former waterway that was used to power the first manorial corn mills of Bradford.
A > A meandering walkway of arcades that connect a series of courtyards. The walkway will be fronted by commercial units, shops, galleries, bars and restaurants.
B
D
B > The residential development, provides the starting point for a further developments to take place outside of the masterplan area. The open park allows for unspoilt views across the valley from which Bradford’s heritage was built from.
B > Courtyards open out on the walkway of the goit. The courtyards provide spaces where people can gather by day and night supported by bars and restaurants.
A
B
C > Existing mill buildings are to be regenerated with the ground floor accommodation providing retail and leisure units. The upper floors are to provide a mix of high quality office spaces and residential apartments. Residential properties at high level will access uninterrupted views across the park and the Bradford valley.
B
C
C > The Market Space, and activity at the park here is fed by the proposed residential development. The matrix elements allow the space to be configured in a variety of layouts. This flexibility allows the matrix to assist people when the pavilion is being used or to be separated off to provide a secondary zone/ events space within the park.

D > New buildings will be used to infill and create a built edge to the north side of Thornton Road. The Goit will promote pedestrian activity parallel to Thornton Road (vehicular activity) with the existing dissecting streets offering views of the park to the south
Masterplan:Bradford Monument and Matrix: Monument Semester two
In semester two, we were asked to revisit our Masterplan and using the potential development areas we had identified to create two design proposals for our Masterplan based around the ideas of Monument and Matrix.
This project ran for the rest of the semester and we had to choose either the Monument or the Matrix element to explore architectural detailing with.
We looked at developing our Civic Space for the Monument and the Event space for our Matrix element, it was on the Matrix element which we decided to use when considering architectural detailing.
THE MONUMENT - Civic Development
The Monument development plans to transform the area around City Hall into an administrative “hub strengthening the existing monumentality of the City Hall.
The Magistrates Courts and Police HQ currently on the site are to be accommodated into new buildings along with a third building housing the relocated Council Offices. These new buildings will create an architectural crescendo leading up to City Hall that can be enjoyed from the enlarged civic space.

THE MONUMENT - Civic Development
New bars, shops and resturants will be created in the Southern facade of the existing buildings and the Northern facade of the new buildings to allow activity to spill out onto the civic space.
City Hall will be rejouvinated with its elevated status and will be fronted with a new green park and interactive urban space to the south.
These new spaces will be divided by the interchange link bridge and pathway cutting through between the City Hall and new Council Offices. This link will facilitate the movement of people from Bradford interchange into the new civic space and also through to Bradford’s central shopping district.
In addition the ring road around the development will be lowered to the east side to allow the urban park to bridge over the road offering an uninterupted view and parkway leading up to the City Hall.

THE EVENT - Educational Outreach Centre
The Event works as a focal point for the other matrix elements. Situated at the pinch point of the urban park and as a destination to one of the extended routes crossing Thornton Road, the Event interupts the retaining wall and combines the additional matrix elements as extensions to the programme.
The Centre is a City Council / Bradford University collaboration unit charged with developing and implementing programs and strategies to improve academic preparation, expand educational opportunities, and ensure access to higher education for low-income and educationally- disadvantaged people, both young and old, in the Bradford Area.
