CHAPTER1
1NowthewordoftheLORDcameuntoJonahthesonof Amittai,saying,
2Arise,gotoNineveh,thatgreatcity,andcryagainstit; fortheirwickednessiscomeupbeforeme.
3ButJonahroseuptofleeuntoTarshishfromthepresence oftheLORD,andwentdowntoJoppa;andhefoundaship goingtoTarshish:sohepaidthefarethereof,andwent downintoit,togowiththemuntoTarshishfromthe presenceoftheLORD
4ButtheLORDsentoutagreatwindintothesea,and therewasamightytempestinthesea,sothattheshipwas liketobebroken
5Thenthemarinerswereafraid,andcriedeverymanunto hisgod,andcastforththewaresthatwereintheshipinto thesea,tolightenitofthemButJonahwasgonedown intothesidesoftheship;andhelay,andwasfastasleep.
6Sotheshipmastercametohim,andsaiduntohim,What meanestthou,Osleeper?arise,calluponthyGod,ifsobe thatGodwillthinkuponus,thatweperishnot.
7Andtheysaideveryonetohisfellow,Come,andletus castlots,thatwemayknowforwhosecausethisevilis uponus.Sotheycastlots,andthelotfelluponJonah.
8Thensaidtheyuntohim,Tellus,wepraythee,forwhose causethisevilisuponus;Whatisthineoccupation?and whencecomestthou?whatisthycountry?andofwhat peopleartthou?
9Andhesaiduntothem,IamanHebrew;andIfearthe LORD,theGodofheaven,whichhathmadetheseaand thedryland
10Thenwerethemenexceedinglyafraid,andsaidunto him,Whyhastthoudonethis?Forthemenknewthathe fledfromthepresenceoftheLORD,becausehehadtold them.
11Thensaidtheyuntohim,Whatshallwedountothee, thattheseamaybecalmuntous?fortheseawrought,and wastempestuous
12Andhesaiduntothem,Takemeup,andcastmeforth intothesea;soshalltheseabecalmuntoyou:forIknow thatformysakethisgreattempestisuponyou.
13Neverthelessthemenrowedhardtobringittotheland; buttheycouldnot:fortheseawrought,andwas tempestuousagainstthem.
14WhereforetheycrieduntotheLORD,andsaid,We beseechthee,OLORD,webeseechthee,letusnotperish forthisman'slife,andlaynotuponusinnocentblood:for thou,OLORD,hastdoneasitpleasedthee 15SotheytookupJonah,andcasthimforthintothesea: andtheseaceasedfromherraging.
16ThenthemenfearedtheLORDexceedingly,and offeredasacrificeuntotheLORD,andmadevows
17NowtheLORDhadpreparedagreatfishtoswallowup JonahAndJonahwasinthebellyofthefishthreedays andthreenights
CHAPTER2
1ThenJonahprayeduntotheLORDhisGodoutofthe fish'sbelly, 2Andsaid,Icriedbyreasonofmineafflictionuntothe LORD,andheheardme;outofthebellyofhellcriedI, andthouheardestmyvoice
3Forthouhadstcastmeintothedeep,inthemidstofthe seas;andthefloodscompassedmeabout:allthybillows andthywavespassedoverme
4ThenIsaid,Iamcastoutofthysight;yetIwilllook againtowardthyholytemple.
5Thewaterscompassedmeabout,eventothesoul:the depthclosedmeroundabout,theweedswerewrapped aboutmyhead.
6Iwentdowntothebottomsofthemountains;theearth withherbarswasaboutmeforever:yethastthoubrought upmylifefromcorruption,OLORDmyGod.
7WhenmysoulfaintedwithinmeIrememberedthe LORD:andmyprayercameinuntothee,intothineholy temple.
8Theythatobservelyingvanitiesforsaketheirownmercy
9ButIwillsacrificeuntotheewiththevoiceof thanksgiving;IwillpaythatthatIhavevowed.Salvationis oftheLORD
10AndtheLORDspakeuntothefish,anditvomitedout Jonahuponthedryland.
CHAPTER3
1AndthewordoftheLORDcameuntoJonahthesecond time,saying,
2Arise,gountoNineveh,thatgreatcity,andpreachuntoit thepreachingthatIbidthee
3SoJonaharose,andwentuntoNineveh,accordingtothe wordoftheLORD.NowNinevehwasanexceedinggreat cityofthreedays'journey
4AndJonahbegantoenterintothecityaday'sjourney, andhecried,andsaid,Yetfortydays,andNinevehshallbe overthrown
5SothepeopleofNinevehbelievedGod,andproclaimed afast,andputonsackcloth,fromthegreatestofthemeven totheleastofthem
6ForwordcameuntothekingofNineveh,andhearose fromhisthrone,andhelaidhisrobefromhim,andcovered himwithsackcloth,andsatinashes
7Andhecausedittobeproclaimedandpublishedthrough Ninevehbythedecreeofthekingandhisnobles,saying, Letneithermannorbeast,herdnorflock,tasteanything: letthemnotfeed,nordrinkwater:
8Butletmanandbeastbecoveredwithsackcloth,andcry mightilyuntoGod:yea,letthemturneveryonefromhis evilway,andfromtheviolencethatisintheirhands.
9WhocantellifGodwillturnandrepent,andturnaway fromhisfierceanger,thatweperishnot?
10AndGodsawtheirworks,thattheyturnedfromtheir evilway;andGodrepentedoftheevil,thathehadsaidthat hewoulddountothem;andhediditnot
CHAPTER4
1ButitdispleasedJonahexceedingly,andhewasvery angry.
2AndheprayeduntotheLORD,andsaid,Ipraythee,O LORD,wasnotthismysaying,whenIwasyetinmy country?ThereforeIfledbeforeuntoTarshish:forIknew thatthouartagraciousGod,andmerciful,slowtoanger, andofgreatkindness,andrepentesttheeoftheevil
3Thereforenow,OLORD,take,Ibeseechthee,mylife fromme;foritisbetterformetodiethantolive
4ThensaidtheLORD,Doestthouwelltobeangry?
5SoJonahwentoutofthecity,andsatontheeastsideof thecity,andtheremadehimabooth,andsatunderitinthe shadow,tillhemightseewhatwouldbecomeofthecity
6AndtheLORDGodpreparedagourd,andmadeitto comeupoverJonah,thatitmightbeashadowoverhis head,todeliverhimfromhisgriefSoJonahwas exceedinggladofthegourd.
7ButGodpreparedawormwhenthemorningrosethe nextday,anditsmotethegourdthatitwithered
8Anditcametopass,whenthesundidarise,thatGod preparedavehementeastwind;andthesunbeatuponthe headofJonah,thathefainted,andwishedinhimselftodie, andsaid,Itisbetterformetodiethantolive.
9AndGodsaidtoJonah,Doestthouwelltobeangryfor thegourd?Andhesaid,Idowelltobeangry,evenunto death.
10ThensaidtheLORD,Thouhasthadpityonthegourd, forthewhichthouhastnotlaboured,neithermadestit grow;whichcameupinanight,andperishedinanight:
11AndshouldnotIspareNineveh,thatgreatcity,wherein aremorethansixscorethousandpersonsthatcannot discernbetweentheirrighthandandtheirlefthand;and alsomuchcattle?
