AUTUMN 15 Dear Flicks Film Fans, Writing about the autumn season of films sitting here in the sunshine seems strange, but we all need something to look forward to once the nights start to draw in, and we have a great selection of films chosen by your local promoter which should entertain, move, and educate!
@FlicksinSticks Flicks in the Sticks
This season is unashamedly British to the core – we make good films here in the UK and we are pleased to celebrate the best of them this season. Dark Horse: The Incredible True Story Of Dream Alliance has been well, a dark horse – the uplifting story of a Welsh mining village which has gone down a storm with audiences. “Funny and inspiring” says one of our promoters. Make sure you get to see it. Great British period dramas such as A Little Chaos (Kate Winslet) and A Testament of Youth, home-grown comedies such as A Royal Night Out and Shaun the Sheep and some new twists on classic films such as Far From the Madding Crowd and Mr Holmes all make up our busy programme. If you want to see a real Enigma Machine catch up with The Imitation Game, as many of the screenings will have Dr Baldwin, a world renowned expert on WWII military intelligence, doing a short presentation before the film. Some of our most loved national treasurers will be in The Second Best Marigold Hotel (Maggie Smith, Judi Dench, Bill Nighy) and Helen Mirren is as brilliant as ever in The Woman in Gold. But we at Flicks also want to bring you a taste of other cultures from around the world – Australia (Tracks), Japan (The Tale of The Princess Kaguya), Sweden (Force Majeure), France (Girlhood), and many others. Finally, we continue our remembrance of the First World War, with a screening of the Battle of Britain, and our special Film Archive evening looking at some wartime films from Ledbury. There are too many great films to mention here, so do go along to our website – and sign up for the email alert (we now have 3000 people on the list) which comes out once a week with details of screenings near you for that week. Now, shall I get the barbecue out? Ian Kerry (Director of Arts Alive and Flicks in the Sticks) t: 01588 620883 e: ian@artsalive.co.uk
Due to circumstances beyond our control, film titles can sometimes change at the last minute – please check with the venue before travelling.

Far From the Madding Crowd Director: Thomas Vinterberg Drama 119 mins, Cert 12a Carey Mulligan, Matthias Schoenaerts, Tom Sturridge, Michael Sheen The story of independent, beautiful and headstrong Bathsheba Everdene, who attracts three very different suitors: Gabriel Oak, a sheep farmer, captivated by her fetching willfulness; Frank Troy, a handsome and reckless Sergeant; and William Boldwood, a prosperous and mature bachelor. This timeless story of Bathsheba’s choices and passions explores the nature of relationships and love – as well as the human ability to overcome hardships through resilience and perseverance.
Mr Holmes Director: Bill Condon Crime/Drama/Mystery 105 mins, Cert PG Ian McKellen, Laura Linney 1947, and an aging Sherlock Holmes returns from a journey to Japan, where he has witnessed the devastation of nuclear war. Now, in his remote farmhouse, Holmes faces the end tending to his bees, with only the company of his housekeeper and her young son. Grappling with the diminishing powers of his mind, Holmes comes to rely upon the boy as he revisits the unsolved case that forced him into retirement, and searches for answers to the mysteries of life and love.
Dark Horse Director: Louise Osmond Documentary/Drama 85 mins, Cert PG Dream Alliance, as himself Set in a former mining village in Wales, this is the inspirational true story of a group of friends from a working men’s club who decide to take on the elite ‘sport of kings’ and breed themselves a racehorse. Raised on a slagheap allotment, their foal grows into an unlikely champion. Buoyantly crafted, Dark Horse is a life-affirming underdog story that will touch the hearts of anyone who has dared to dream.
"how delightful my expeditions to Flicks always are a film in an intimate setting, sometimes a cheap meal and friendly people - a really good evening out!"
