IAOMS Foundation 2019 Annual Report

THANK YOU Dear Friends & Colleagues, It is with enormous gratitude that we thank you for your contribution to a groundbreaking year for the IAOMS Foundation. This past year your leadership and commitment has allowed the Foundation to grow in a multitude of ways, including launching its first ever multi-year campaign, establishing new strategic partnerships, and expanding the breadth and depth of Foundation programs. Continued growth and expansion is essential in order to fulfill the Foundation’s mission of improving the quality and safety of healthcare worldwide by advancing patient care, education and research and meeting the growing needs of the global OMF community. In 2019 the Foundation launched its first multiyear fundraising initiative, the Global Impact Campaign. This five year campaign is designed
Additionally, the Foundation established new strategic alliances with prominent stakeholders in the OMF community. Our partnership with the OMS Foundation brings international training opportunities to resident surgeons from North America. Our partnership with the Osteo Science Foundation, which joins us in our global efforts to fund and facilitate collaborative programs that focus on regenerative medicine in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery, enables us to deliver increased hands-on training and e-learning educational programming to members. Strategic partnerships such as these lay the foundation necessary to fund the global need for training and education. Achieving success with such a bold fundraising initiative requires commitment from all members of our OMFS community and we must also acknowledge our individual members who

to bring together all stakeholders in the OMFS specialty with the goal of garnering the resources necessary to expand IAOMS and the IAOMS Foundation educational and training resources, and to increase the opportunities for engagement among the global OMFS community. As part of the Global Impact Campaign fundraising efforts, the IAOMS Foundation has worked to expand its relationships with existing strategic partners. We thank KLS Martin for their on-going support of the Foundation and their role as lead corporate sponsor of the Global Impact Campaign.

generously participate in the Campaign as campaign leaders and donors. Your participation funded much needed education and training programs and inspired others in the OMF community to join us in this movement. The combined contributions of our IAOMS community has propelled the Campaign forward, allowing us to make substantial progress toward achieving our $2.5 million dollar goal. This year has been a dynamic year for growth and expansion of the Foundation’s programmatic
offerings. Thanks to the support of the OMS Foundation we were able to increase the number of hands-on training opportunities by adding an additional twelve-month cleft lip and palate and craniofacial surgery fellowship to our existing portfolio of fellowships. With the generous support of Osteo Science Foundation and in partnership with the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Michigan we will launch in January 2020 a new twelve-month Clinical and Regenerative Medicine Fellowship taking place at the University of Michigan. Support from the Osteo Science Foundation also enabled us to increase the Visiting Scholarship awards from two to seven, providing more opportunities for young surgeons to train and study with top surgeons and professors.
ICOMS Scholarships program which provided travel and housing assistance for three residents from North America to attend our signature international OMF meeting, the 2019 International Conference on Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Rio de Janeiro.
In addition to expanding existing programs, the Foundation introduced a new program aimed at providing in-person education and networking opportunities to resident surgeons. With the support of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) and the Canadian Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (CAOMS), the IAOMS Foundation debuted the
We look forward to a future of continued expansion and growth as we work together to meet the needs of the international OMF community. On behalf of the IAOMS Foundation Board of Trustees, thank you for your commitment and leadership in helping us meet this goal.
DR. LARRY NISSEN IAOMS Foundation Chair
MITCHELL DVORAK Executive Director
While 2019 has been filled with exciting new challenges and new areas of growth, the highlight of this year has been the opportunity to meet and network with our supporters in person at ICOMS 2019 in Rio de Janeiro. It was a pleasure to meet many of you for the first time and to reconnect with long-standing donors and friends. From the Foundation Luncheon to the Donor’s Reception it was so enjoyable to celebrate together the Foundation’s many successes.

GLOBAL IMPACT CAMPAIGN
Launching our Next Since its inception, the IAOMS Foundation has provided more than $1.3 million in funding to support global OMFS education and training initiatives, such as the Fellowship Program, Gift of Knowledge Program, Committee on Global Surgery (COGS), Visiting Scholars Program, and ICOMS Travel Scholarships. We are incredibly proud to have supported so many surgeons over the years, and we remain forever thankful for our members, regional affiliates, industry partners, and foundation collaborators for supporting our mission. Together, we have accomplished so much but it is what we have yet to achieve that keeps us motivated. The Global Impact Campaign is a launching point for the next chapter in our history. We are immensely grateful to all our stakeholders who share our vision for the future. Thank you, to everyone who has supported this important effort. DR. STEVEN M. ROSER With your long history of involvement with the IAOMS, what about the IAOMS Foundation would you like to share with others? The IAOMS Foundation supports an educational platform athat represents the profession worldwide. The educational programs are all of the highest quality. The platform allows the sharing of advances in the field unparalleled in any surgical subspecialty. The platform generates collegiality amongst the worldwide leaders in OMS that permits the sharing of information, encouragement and motivation. We are very fortunate the have the Foundation at this time as I anticipate it will be a critical player in the long road to recovery ahead of us. What personal passions inspire you to advocate for the IAOMS Foundation Global Impact Campaign? My passions, like many, are in helping others. That is, in my opinion, the basis for the Foundation programs the Global Impact Campaign will support. The Foundation has what money cannot buy, talented surgeons who want to make the world a better place. The Global Impact Campaign will help these individuals by providing the funding for quality sustainable programs.

PROGRAMS IAOMS FOUNDATION FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM Since 2010 the IAOMS Foundation Fellowship Program has offered three trainee surgeons per year a twelve-month immersion in one of two specialty areas: Oncology and Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery (offered in Beijing, China and Shanghai, China) or Cleft Lip and Palate and Craniofacial Surgery (six months in Bangalore, India and six months in Hyderabad, India). Over the past decade, 27 surgeons have received Fellowships. This year, with the support of the OMS Foundation, we have expanded our fellowship portfolio to include an additional twelve-month Cleft Lip and Palate and Craniofacial Surgery Fellowship in Shanghai, China. Available exclusively to a US surgeon, this fellowship will provide an unmatched international cultural and learning experience. Applications for the inaugural fellowship will become available in 2020. IAOMS Foundation Chair, Larry Nissen, with ICOMS Scholarship recipients Matthew Green and Rian Cho at the IAOMS Foundation Donors Reception, ICOMS 2019 in Rio de Janeiro, May 2019
How has attending ICOMS expanded your perspective on the specialty from an international standpoint? Being able to share knowledge with colleagues from around the world was a pleasant and enriching experience because I believe that by learning from each other’s experiences we can improve our patient care. What advice do you have for young surgeons or trainees attending ICOMS for the first time? Take this opportunity for knowing people that have the same interests as you during the meeting because these relationships will last, and you will also be able to improve your practice by discussing with these colleagues afterwards. DR. SIMON JEAN
As a young surgeon, how did attending ICOMS for the first time impact your professional and personal growth? I am glad that I was able to attend ICOMS at the beginning of my career as an Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon as it has broadened my view on this specialty. I not only look for and consider attending US-based conferences/ courses, but I now search for what is available world-wide and consider them. I believe this will have compound effect throughout my career to broaden my perspective and education where it will eventually benefit the patients that I treat.
CLINICAL AND REGENERATIVE MEDICINE RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP The IAOMS Foundation, with the generous support of Osteo Science Foundation and in partnership with the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Michigan, will provide an opportunity for advanced training in Clinical and Regenerative Medicine Research. Introduced this year, and set to launch in January 2020, this twelve-month Clinical and Regenerative Medicine Research Fellowship is designed to provide the fellow with a broad exposure to both clinical research methods and regenerative medicine lab work.
COMMITTEE ON GLOBAL SURGERY Under the umbrella of the IAOMS Foundation, the Committee on Global Surgery (COGS) strives to create, foster and facilitate international outreach opportunities for IAOMS members to assist and learn in low resource areas of the world. Additionally, this committee aims to help to represent IAOMS in the advocacy efforts for safe surgery and anesthesia as well as maintaining a state of readiness for IAOMS in the response to natural disaster. The Committee on Global Surgery works to achieve these goals established in 2019 to expand the capacity of global oral and maxillofacial surgery. Find out more at www.iaoms.org/iaoms-foundation/cogs/

DR. ALEJANDRO MARTINEZ How does the Gift of Knowledge program further the growth and international development of the OMF specialty, especially in regions where the specialty is less advanced? Dominican Republic Program In conjunction with Sociedad Dominicana de Cirugía Bucal y Maxilofacial (SODOCIBUMAX) leaders from the IAOMS conducted the second of a two-part course focusing on Current Concepts in Orthognathic & Aesthetic Facial Surgery. The course took place in April of 2019, following the first part of the two part course on Reconstructive Surgery in March 2018.
The gift of knowledge program helps the region by spreading information. It means that OMF surgeons and OMF programs can see different surgical techniques, as well as new products that are being used, they can have a more personal way of education so questions are more specific, or with more detailed explanations. The next thing is OMF surgeons have the experience to share, talk, eat and drink with the experts and in that moment is when better teaching occurs. These countries and regions have a “fire up” spirit and everyone goes back to their offices or OMF programs to teach others, continuing to spread education and information.
The Mexican Microvascular Training Program On August 26, 2019, the second module for the IAOMS - AMCBMC (La Asociación Mexicana de Cirugía Bucal y Maxilofacial, Colegio) took place at the Autonomous National University of México (UNAM).
