Today our presentation will focus on 1. Our role as a coordinator 2. How to keep students on task and maintain quality learning during an unplanned school closure 3. How to turn the aftermath of the crisis into a learning experience by incorporating the experience into your curriculum, the learner profile and the core components of the diploma


Before the Crisis Have your admin sorted out . . . ● Have a suitable person identified as an Admin Assistant on IBIS ● Keep your address book up to date with IB contacts (back up to a smart phone or webbased account as well) ● Store e-copies of important documentation and forms using secure web-based file storage (eg dropbox) ● Keep student contact details (e-mail and cell phone numbers) up to date

From Crisis to Opportunity


After the Crisis – How do you take the situation and turn it into a learning experience? We are going to share a few examples of what we have been a part of.


Example 1 Indian Ocean Tsunami December 2004 - a school's response The Koh Phi Phi Tsunami relief project was developed by The Regent’s School Pattaya in response to the disaster. 2005- short term response to help with clean up and raise money for an electrical generator, helped in building houses with the Thai army 2005-2008-lunch program for Baan Koh Phi Phi school Sept 2007- a new community partner Ban Leamtong School - a small sea gypsy community on Phi Phi Together with architecture students from Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, a 10 phase project began to build the sea gypsy's a community centre



Example 2 - Peruvian Earthquake August 2007 -Sunampe, Chincha, Near Lima

Example 3 - Flooding in Thailand October 2011- an individual’s response � Jonathan- Year 13 student living in Rangsit (north of Bangkok) had his community and his own home affected by the flooding in October of 2011.


Example 3 – Flooding in Thailand October 2011- a subject teacher’s response ● The goal- to design affordable flood proof housing for low socioeconomic Thai’s ● The DT department is going to work with community partners Habitat for Humanity in conjunction with SOA+D (School of Architecture and Design) on this project
