Great Myths Debunked IB Busy! decided to go behind the scenes and research two of the most controversial, confusing myths out there. From more world-renowned problems to a strictly IB related issue, we have looked into a few different stories that we found intriguing. The Creation of IB: If you ask some of your IB teachers, they might tell you that the International Baccalaureate program started in Switzerland in order to accommodate students who had to often switch schools. But, after some intense research, the IB Busy! team found out that this is mostly false. The IB program started sometime in the 1960s after an Indian who is said to have been a high school junior student, moved from India to Switzerland because his father was a diplomat, and had trouble with the Swiss high school program – the Swiss baccalaureate. But it didn’t just stop there; the boy, named Bahir Jagad, suffered from bullying from his fellow classmates who clearly excelled. Even worse, he was unable to move to an easier program since all the children of diplomats had to graduate with the Swiss baccalaureate. As his junior year continued, Bahir suffered from depression because he was a disgrace to his family. To cover up his shame, he even often told his parents many lies. So one day in January of 1965, Bahir had a dream in which he saw high school students around the world crying and suffering, surrounded by books and papers and endless due dates. When he asked them what was wrong, they explained to him that they were International Baccalaureate diploma candidates. So, he woke up in the middle of the night with the excitement running through his veins. The next morning, he told the principal about his idea, thus starting the IB. After he died, thankful IB students tried to research more about his life but were unable to ¿QG D WUDFH ¹ QRW DQ DGdress, a family, a diploma, nothing except the fact that Bahir in Indian means dazzling and brilliant. Today, we know that Bahir was no normal student, instead he was a mysterious miracle sent to save the lives of thousands of future high school students.

The Titanic A century after the famous Titanic sank in the Arctic Ocean, people still love and are incredibly intrigued by its story. From a movie to different books on the topic, you’d think we’d know as much as we possibly could about the story. But, in the year 2000, the American government made a huge discovery that they tried and failed to keep a secret because of the ambitions of nosey bloggers all around the world. Following in their footsteps, IB Busy! found new information about the sinking of the titanic. One week before it set sail, the Titanic was due to be inspected one last time. A team of one hundred of the best engineers and technicians were happy to raid the huge ship searching for anything that would cause the slightest discomfort. But, after the inspection was over, only ninetynine came out. Feminism vs Chivalry: Does One Lead to the Demise of the Other? 5HEHFFD 7HQQD &KLYDOU\ E\ GHILQLWLRQ LV WKH FRPELQDWLRQ RI TXDOLWLHV expected of an ideal knight, especially courage, honor, courtesy, justice, and a readiness to help the weak. These are the ideals by which men are judged in society. Their manliness is not only determined by their physical strength and ability, but also by how they treat those around them. In society today, however, when ideals such as equality and feminism blur the line between acceptable etiquette and outright discrimination against women, we see the role of chivalry diminishing and its principles weakening. Decades ago, it was not only acceptable, but expected of men to open doors, reach for the check, and lend their jackets. It was one of those societal decorums that need not be explained but was accepted without question. But as the movement of radical feminism grew, along with it came the question of why can’t women do the same things and follow the same rules. These days, it is common to stumble upon loud, unnerving comments about the unfortunate death of chivalry. While it is true that chivalry does not quite carry the name it used to, we have to step back and examine the causes. Popular opinion states that feminism is by far the leadLQJ FDXVH RI GHDWK RI FKLYDOU\ 5DGLFDO IHPLQLVWV KDYH disallowed coexistence of both these ideals by declaring that chivalry merely exists to degrade women in
society and make them look like lesser human beings that cannot carry out simple tasks in life. Other aspects of feminism, however, argue that the only reason chivalry is dying is that women started acting the same way towards society as chivalrous men do. They open doors for the elderly and basically practice the same concept, and that is the way in which we practice equality. So, can feminism still be considered the cause of death for chivalry? “I think men use feminism as an excuse just to not be chivalrous, said Fatima “in reality, they are the ones killing chivalry. They are too lazy to carry out the simple tasks that society requires, so they choose to blame it on a concept that has absolutely nothing to do with it. When asked about chivalry, the following was what Bram Korsten had to say: “I do not think that chivalry is fully dead because, there are still women who respect the kindness of men and make use of it. But, yes, nowadays I do notice that there are more and more women who want to be independent and do not want to be a “burden to men. Women should understand that men like to be kind, and I personally get upset sometimes if a woman does not make any use of my kindness. For a prosperous society, gender equality is vital. So instead of killing chivalry altogether and creating yet another feud, it is best to universalize it and have equal roles, filling in the gaps that are created by the other.

The American International School Model United Nations had its 23rd annual conference from the 8th to the 11th of March. Even though the number of participants was limited, the conference was extremely well organized. Everyone was working extremely hard to finish their work and they were very excited about the conference. MUN is not only a chance for students to learn more about the world around them, but it is also an opportunity for them to have fun and to make new friends. From start to finish, MUN is a learning experience. Delegates start off simply by learning about the rules of procedure of the forum they are in, and go on to learn more and more about their countries and the specific issues being discussed. MUN is a way for students to acquire public speaking and research skills. It instills within them the ability to develop arguments on the spot. A lot of times during conferences, delegates are expected to argue for a nation’s policy that they might not necessarily agree with. For example, a delegate might be required to defend a country within which genocide is occurring. This allows delegates to be objective and teaches them how to remove their own personal opinion from the issue. In MUN, one’s personal opinion is of no significance. People don’t care what you as a person think, but rather what your country’s policy regarding the issue is. Through debate, delegates discuss issues that are of the utmost importance to our world today. These issues are what shape the world and affect us on a daily basis. Therefore, the delegates benefit from getting to know these issues at such depths to be able to be more aware of global and ethical issues. All the issues were debated passionately, making this conference a very impressive one indeed. It was also the last conference for the seniors and for the Secretary General, Youssef Katamish. The closing ceremony was emotional as some seniors tried to hold back tears while delivering their closing speeches.
