CANCER CARE
Improving the quality of life for cancer patients

hirty-nine years ago, cancer was a word hardly spoken aloud in the community. Patients were isolated for fear of contamination, and families were even afraid to use the same utensils. PALS began with a group of volunteer nurses to assist in getting patients home from the hospital with cancer. These patients needed a “pal,â€? someone to sit with them, read to them, or perhaps feed them. Robert Stigwood, a well-known music HQWUHSUHQHXU ĆśOP SURGXFHU DQG D %HUPXGD

EYE CARE
How to Lower Your Risk of Eye Disease y age 65, a significant number of Bermudians will acquire a visionimpairing eye disease. Many sightrobbing conditions can be effectively treated if detected early enough, in many cases limiting or eliminating the damage to eyesight. Four eye diseases – age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and cataracts – account for most cases of adult blindness and low vision in Bermuda. Because these eye diseases cause no pain and often have no early symptoms, they do not automatically prompt individuals to seek medical care. However, a thorough checkup by an eyecare professional can detect many eye diseases in their earliest stages. Early treatment is vital because it can slow or halt disease progression. A thorough eye exam can also detect other health conditions, such as stroke, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, autoimmune diseases, sexually

transmitted diseases, and some cancers. The American Academy of Ophthalmology states that following these five simple steps can help you take control of your eye health today: 1. Get a comprehensive medical eye exam at age 40. Early signs of disease or changes in vision may begin at this age. An exam by an ophthalmologist or other eyecare professional is an opportunity to carefully examine the eye for diseases and conditions that may have no symptoms in the early stages. 2. Know your family history. Certain eye diseases can be inherited. Knowledge of past and present family eye disorders can help save your vision. In fact, if age-related macular degeneration (AMD) runs in your family, you have a 50 percent chance of developing AMD. Further, according to the Glaucoma Research Foundation, having a family history of glaucoma makes you four to nine times more likely
to get the disease. Just as you would tell your family doctor about your family history of heart disease, you should inform your eyecare professional about your family’s eye health history. Telling your eyecare professional the types of eye diseases that run in your family may prompt him or her to recommend more frequent eye exams. Also your age, race, and gender all play a factor in eye diseases that you may or may not be prone to. For example, nearly twothirds of people affected by vision loss are female and elderly individuals with African ancestry, and this group is five times more likely to develop glaucoma. 3. Eat healthy foods. Eye-healthy food choices include citrus fruits, nuts, whole grains, dark green leafy vegetables, and oily fish. Leafy green vegetables are rich in lutein and zeaxanthin and are also a good source of eye-friendly vitamin C. Fish that contains the most beneficial levels of omega-3s include salmon and tuna. Studies have found that fish oil can reverse dry eye, including dry eye caused by spending too much time on a computer. Drinking plenty of water can prevent dehydration, which may also reduce the symptoms of dry eyes. 4. Stop smoking. Smoking increases the risk for eye diseases such as cataract and age-related macular degeneration. Smoking also raises the risk for cardiovascular diseases, which can indirectly influence your eye health. Tobacco smoke, including second-hand smoke, also worsens dry eye. 5. Wear sunglasses. Long-term exposure to the sun without proper protection can increase the risk of eye disease, including cataracts, macular degeneration, growths on the eye, and a rare form of eye cancer. Even short-term exposure can damage the eyes. Sun UHƷHFWLQJ RƵ ZDWHU FDQ FDXVH D SDLQIXO sunburn on the front part of the eye, called photokeratitis. It causes redness, blurry vision, sensitivity to bright light, and, in rare cases, even temporary vision loss. The good news is that prevention is simple: Wear sunglasses that block 99 to 100 percent of both UVA and UVB radiation. Look for a sticker or tag on sunglasses indicating that they block 99 to 100 percent of both UVA and UVB radiation. While dark lenses may look cool, they do not necessarily block more UV rays. 5

BEAUTY TRENDS
A Revolutionary Fat Loss and
Skin Toning Technology Sasha Benson, C.L.T., L.E., spa coordinator at BWOC explains a new noninvasive fat loss treatment any of us have stubborn fat due to lifestyle, genetics, and many other factors. Unwanted bulges contain fat cells that may be resistant to diet and exercise – but not to fat freezing. The FDA approved a new technology nearly a decade ago called Cool Sculpting, which was designed to accomplish what liposuction accomplishes – but without surgery and without piercing the skin. This new high-tech device freezes the fat cells underneath the skin. When the fat cells become frozen, they die. The fat cells then dissolve and release their contents. When people have an abnormal accumulation of “fat,” which means their fixed number of fat cells is bulging with liquid fat content. With CryoSkin, the patient lies back on a comfortable treatment table while the technician applies a specialised gel that is resistant to freezing, over the targeted area, and then the treatment begins. The procedure is capable of reaching a temperature as low as -8°C maintaining it constantly during the whole session, while preserving the skin at the same time. It uses negative temperatures to destroy fat cells (fat freezing). A session lasts only 30 minutes, and patients usually lose between 1 and 2 inches in only one session. The surface skin itself is never frozen, but there may be a little redness for several hours post-treatment. Because there is a timeline for how long it takes the destroyed fat cells to release their contents to be digested internally by the body’s normal scavenging mechanisms, it may take two weeks for the results to show. Also, to achieve a desired outcome, several

sessions may be required. The areas that typically show the best results are those that also do best with liposuction: the muffin top, arms, double chin, front abdomen, and flank love-handle areas –
for both men and women. When you see and also feel a noticeable improvement in your pant size, that’s motivation to stick with a healthy diet and fitness routine. 7

S
At the doctors (1) Ask questions. Before you leave the GRFWRUĹĄV RƸFH EH DEVROXWHO\ FOHDU ZKDW each medicine written on your prescription is for. You may already have one of those medicines at home and may not need a new prescription right now, or you may have already tried it through another doctor and found it not to work. The same medicine can often be SUHVFULEHG XQGHU GLĆľHUHQW QDPHV )RU example, you may have been prescribed Omeprazole, and it did not work. If you then get a prescription for Losec, the chances are it won’t work either, as it is exactly the same. All this costs you more money. (2) Look at your prescription. At the bottom there are two places a doctor can put his or her signature. On the right, that instructs Health & Beauty Summer 2019
the pharmacist to dispense the prescription “as written; on the left, that allows for the generic equivalent to be used. If your doctor has signed on the right, then ask why. There may be a medical reason; at the same time, however, there may not, and you could instead get prescribed a less-expensive but clinically equivalent medicine. (3) Irrespective of where the doctor signs the prescription, ask if the name of the medicine is a BRAND name or a GENERIC name.
At the pharmacy (4) Use your pharmacist’s skill set. Incorrectly taken medicine can result in the need for a second course, thus
increasing the expense to you and your insurance company. (6) If this is a medicine you have taken for a long time, then make sure you get a three months’ supply. This is the maximum you can get with insurance coverage and will lower your expenses over time. This is a staggering fact when you consider it is 95% preventable. Once considered a disease of old age, heart attacks are happening now to a much younger demographic. Poor diets, sedentary lifestyles, and stress are just a few of the contributing factors to the disease. You need to be aware of your family’s medical history, but of course, there’s not too much you can do about that. We recognise that everyone wants to do all they can for their own wellbeing – but it is not easy. One must take a step back and realise that life is a series of decisions and actions. WLVVXH GDPDJH DQG LQơDPPDWLRQ 1RW JRRG When you smoke marijuana your heart rate and blood pressure increase. This forces the heart to work harder. Furthermore, marijuana burns at a much higher temperature than tobacco, so when you smoke it, you change its composition plus inhale all the products of combustion, like carbon monoxide, which reduce your blood’s ability to deliver oxygen. This increases the risk of a heart attack and stroke while smoking and for a few hours afterwards. Dr. James says that the keto diet doesn’t have to be done under medical supervision, but it’s preferable to have professional support and access to a medical physician. “You can get blood work done, and you can be supervised and evaluated,â€? he says. “Sometimes your blood pressure or blood sugar will drop, so this should be

Any time you have a major shift in your diet or your lifestyle, it’s good to have medical supervision, another set of eyes, to make sure what you’re doing is correct, and, if you have questions, there’s a resource you can go to. WEIGHT LOSS
Diary of a dieter Don Burgess, teacher, writer, and CEO of the Media Council of Bermuda, shares his personal struggles with weight loss had a diabetes scare a few years back, and my weight had ballooned up to 185 pounds. Both my parents had diabetes, so I am genetically at a disadvantage. I have no control over that, but I do have control over what I eat. I kept a food journal and saw my weight drop to 154 pounds. But I didn’t keep my eye on the prize, and my weight slowly began to go up again until it was over 170 pounds. Recently, I’ve been having chest pains, so I need to cut down on my sodium and red meat consumption. Heart problems are another genetic gift from my parents I could do without.
In February of this year, I decided that it was time to get back on track with my weight, and, with my prior knowledge of keeping a food journal, I decided to look for an app. After testing several options, I decided to use the Nutracheck app as my food journal. I used it free for a week, then paid $10 for a year’s subscription, DV WKH DSS RƾHUV VHYHUDO XVHIXO features. And, besides counting calories, it also keeps track of the amount of sodium, protein, sugars, carbs, fats, and saturated fats consumed. It even provides a weekly report, so if I overindulge on one or two days, the results are more

Get strong, toned, and flexible ilates reformer classes at Horizon Health will help you develop and maintain nextlevel core muscles Pilates is a low-resistance, low-gravity form of movement to help gain strength easily and consistently in a noninvasive way through the reformer push/pulley system. Reformers work on the basis of opposition always strengthening an area of the body whilst stretching the opposite muscles. This creates a balanced muscular skeletal system, evenly toned, and posture-aligned body. Pilates concentrates on working your “inner unit muscles verses your “outer unit major muscles that most other forms of movement and sports focus on. Natural Hair Colors A person’s genes determine the hair/ skin/eye color before his or her birth. The determinants for hair color are known as melanocytes. These cells form the natural hair colors, or pigments, and distinguish among black, brown, and red. Depending on the percentage of each pigment, a person typically has blond, brown, red, or black hair. As the melanocytes decay during a lifetime, the hair becomes dull gray and later on turns whitish.
