Our Initiatives at HSBC Bermuda

Since 2004, HSBC Bermuda has been supporting communities, we recognise the importance of supporting local initiatives that address social, economic, and environmental challenges, and we’re dedicated to being a catalyst for positive change.

Our support for local community initiatives is rooted in our belief that strong communities are built on collaboration, empowerment, and inclusivity. We understand that by investing in the wellbeing and prosperity of our communities, we contribute to a stronger and more sustainable future for everyone.

Environment

HSBC Bermuda acknowledges the significant impact businesses have on the community and their responsibility in addressing climate change. HSBC Group aims to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, emphasising the crucial role of its employees in this sustainability journey.

Through employee volunteering, HSBC not only supports the local community but also fosters sustainable practices among its members. This initiative ensures that all team members are wellequipped with the knowledge and skills needed to advocate for sustainable practices and fulfill the bank’s environmental and social responsibilities effectively.

Summary of Environmental Initiatives

• Bermuda Zoological Society (BZS) Micro-Forest Programme

This program is a public-private partnership led by HSBC Bermuda, aimed at combating climate change and deforestation in Bermuda.

It focuses on establishing dense, small-scale forests that will be rich in native and endemic species.

HSBC Bermuda is the flagship partner of the Bermuda Zoological Society (BZS) Micro-Forest Programme.

• Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS)

With support from HSBC, 230 middle school students engaged in BIOS’ Climate Classroom, an immersive program focused on climate change science and its current and future impacts on Bermuda. HSBC organized a Community Clean-up Day at Cooper’s Island Nature Reserve hosted by BIOS, where 25 staff cleared the beach of harmful plastics and trash. Invasive species were also removed and replaced with native ground cover plants.

• Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI) -Youth Climate Summit (YCS)

The Bermuda Youth Climate Summit is a significant weeklong event that brings together over 150 students aged 13-22 from various schools in Bermuda. The summit aims to establish a foundation for a year of youth-led initiatives centered on local climate mitigation efforts.

• Keeping Bermuda Beautiful (KBB)

HSBC Bermuda’s Climate Action Network (CAN) has collaborated with Keep Bermuda Beautiful (KBB) to adopt Mary Prince Park and clean up Devonshire Bay as part of the “Adopt a Park” initiative. Since the program’s inception in 2023, there has been a significant reduction in trash collected by employees, indicating the effectiveness of their efforts. This ongoing commitment has contributed to minimizing plastic pollution in the ocean and enhancing the overall beauty of Bermuda.

- Youth Climate Summit

BUEI held its third annual Youth Climate Summit in November, partnering with HSBC Bermuda as a Co-Transformational Founding Partner. This weeklong event brought together over 150 students aged 13-22 from various schools in Bermuda.

Participants engaged in activities and seminars centered on local climate mitigation, covering topics such as Conservation, Sustainability, and Climate Justice.

HSBC also provided support for the three year-long, student-led climate impact projects that followed the summit. This initiative highlights HSBC’s commitment to fostering youth engagement in climate action and sustainability efforts.

HSBC Bermuda recognises its responsibility towards the financial wellness of its clients and the broader community. The bank is dedicated to promoting financial literacy through various initiatives and programs tailored to address the diverse needs of the community. This commitment reflects HSBC Bermuda’s credibility and duty in fostering a financially informed population.

We offer a diverse range of products and services designed to cater to customers of all ages. This includes access to omni-channel services, including branch visits, telephone banking, internet banking, and mobile banking, ensuring convenient access for all customers. HSBC emphasizes fair and unbiased underwriting practices to facilitate access to credit. Additionally, HSBC maintains branches and ATMs throughout the island, enhancing community access to its services. Customers also benefit from financial planning reviews and have access to wealth products for longterm investment opportunities.

Premier Relationship Managers and Mortgage Specialists participated in various local radio station interviews and podcasts, focusing on the themes of investing and wealth growth. They shared their expertise on investment strategies and the tools available to help clients enhance their financial portfolios. Additionally, they provided insights on planning and investing for financing children’s education.

Customer Appreciation Month

The Customer Appreciation initiative at HSBC Bermuda is designed to express gratitude to customers for their continued banking relationship. The program emphasises the importance of customer feedback and aims to foster ongoing engagement.

To this end, a series of Customer Appreciation Days were organised on three consecutive Thursdays in September: 12th September at the St. Georges Branch,19th September at the Harborview Branch, and 26th September at the Somerset Branch.

These events provided an opportunity for the bank to connect with customers, demonstrate attentiveness to their needs, and encourage further interaction with the bank.

Bermuda High School for Girls

Charitable Trust, She Leads Middle and Senior School Programme

HSBC Bermuda has sponsored the She Leads Programme for four years, focusing on connecting young Bermudian girls from various educational backgrounds. The programme equips participants with tools to address real-world challenges through interactive sessions that cover coping skills for stress, confidence building, resilience strengthening, and leadership development.

Additionally, HSBC staff engaged with the students to discuss financial literacy best practices and the different credit and loan products available to college-aged individuals.

Featured in Bermuda’s 2024 Diversity, Equality and Inclusion Magazine highlighting the activities and the impact of HSBC’s Diversity Officers and Diversity Committees.

The aim was to provide readers with a comprehensive understanding of best practices and effective strategies in promoting DEI in Bermuda.

Supporting Women | March 8th

HSBC Bermuda marked International Women’s Day by showcasing its female staff across various platforms. The celebration included features on social media, coverage in The Royal Gazette newspaper, and presentations on in-branch television monitors. This initiative highlights the contributions and achievements of women within the organisation.

Women in Science Fundraiser

A fundraising event was held at the Verdmont Museum to celebrate International Women’s Day, focusing on women in the field of science. HSBC sponsored the event, highlighting the significant contributions of women in science. The bank emphasised its commitment to fostering networking opportunities for young women pursuing careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).

-Title Sponsor of Cup Match Selection Night Coverage

BCG live-streamed the Cup Match Selection Night from both Somerset Cricket Club and St. George’s Cricket Club to enhance community engagement.

The event included entertainment and aimed to connect with former players and the wider community. It attracted 3,700 views, with nearly 90% of the audience located in Bermuda. Overall, the initiative successfully strengthened community ties and celebrated the cricketing tradition.

The City of Hamilton hosted the 2024 City Christmas Boat Parade, sponsored by HSBC Bermuda, aimed at family enjoyment. The event featured a Viewing Village and Kids Zone, both free to access.

Attendees enjoyed food from various vendors while watching a parade of beautifully decorated boats on Hamilton Harbour. The event concluded with a spectacular drone show, a first for Bermuda, which illuminated the sky with festive lights and holiday cheer.

Cup Match fever is alive and well at HSBC, we celebrated our 17th year as lead sponsor of the biggest local sporting event of the year. Cup Match serves as a significant opportunity for the island to unite and allows HSBC Bermuda and its employees to engage with and contribute to the community while honoring their history and heritage. Beyond sponsorship, the event offers employees a chance to participate in various activities, which is a key highlight of their employee engagement initiatives.

The Eastern Counties is a competitive local cricket tournament in Bermuda, showcasing four East End clubs over a six-week summer period. It is considered one of the island’s hidden gems in the annual sporting calendar. HSBC Bermuda serves as the lead sponsor for the local broadcasting of this tournament, highlighting its significance in the community.

• The Women’s Resource Centre (WRC)

-TRANSFORM Program

The program aims to empower women by equipping them with essential tools to create or restore healthy and fulfilling lives. It consolidates the foundational services of the WRC into a comprehensive 12-month intervention divided into three phases.

Participants received therapeutic sessions, attended six life skills workshops, and gained access to one sponsored education or training opportunity to enhance their employment or entrepreneurial prospects.

• Age Concern

-Client Services and Education Program

The Client Services Information, Advice & Referral Service Program focused on advocating for older adults by providing essential information and referrals through various channels, including telephone, online, and in-person visits.

Key support areas encompassed career access, affordable healthcare, and housing assistance. Meanwhile, the Education Program was tailored for seniors, offering workshops and training aimed at successful aging. Topics covered included legal and financial planning, caregiving support, and health and wellness.

• The Reading Clinic

-ICAN Math Program

ICAN Math was created to address the challenges associated with weak numeracy skills, learning difficulties and school failure in primary aged children. The program provided 54 tutoring sessions per child.

• Ignite

-Young Adult Entrepreneurial Internship Programme

This is an 8-week internship is designed to foster enthusiasm for entrepreneurship among participants. It offers mentorship and training

entrepreneurs, covering key topics like marketing, competitive analysis, value proposition, and pitching. Participants who successfully complete the program receive a $1,000 internship stipend from HSBC.

• Bermuda College Foundation

-Building Financial Literacy Workshops

These workshops targeted Bermuda’s vulnerable community, specifically targeting households with incomes below $125,000. Four workshops were held, with participants aged 15 to over 65. HSBC was the exclusive financial institution presenting on various topics, including banking, investments, and borrowing.

• Bermuda High School Charitable Trust

-She Leads Program

The program aims to unite young Bermudian girls from diverse educational backgrounds, including public, private, and home schools. It provides resources to help them tackle real-world challenges through interactive sessions that emphasize coping skills, confidence, resilience, and leadership.

The inaugural Conference occurred in April, lasting three days with multiple workshops and a concluding presentation. In July, the She Leads Senior program extended over five days, featuring guest speakers, a WeSpeak Bootcamp, and project presentations to peers, mentors, and family at BHS.

Our Charitable Partnerships

• The Coalition for the Protection of Children -Roots for Success Program

This program is a job-readiness training initiative that utilizes a multimedia educational curriculum and work placements to bridge the gap between education and employment. Since our partnership with the charity in 2018, the program has successfully assisted in uplifting 280 resumes, leading to long-term employment for many trainees.

The charity staff also play a crucial role in connecting trainees to educational programs that improve their employability and promote career advancement.

• Connectech -Coding Program

The program fosters problem-solving and critical thinking skills through hands-on design, building, and programming of robots. The Robotics Team consisted of 25 students aged 12 to 18 from various public and private schools.

The 2024 theme addressed the challenges and opportunities related to equitable, safe, nutritious, and environmentally responsible food production, emphasizing the need for a sustainable food system.

• HSBC Staff Give Back Programme -PALS and SPCA

Colleagues selected two charities that resonate with their values. The Bermuda SPCA focuses on promoting kindness to animals, preventing cruelty, and educating the public about animal care, successfully finding homes for over 300 animals annually.

Meanwhile, the PALS charity offers care to terminal cancer patients, primarily in their homes, enhancing their quality of life and providing emotional, physical, and social support to both patients and their families.

Seniors’ Fraud Presentations

In November, HSBC’s Fraud team collaborated with the Bermuda Police Service and the Bermuda Government’s Ageing and Disability Services for Fraud Week activities. We hosted two Fraud Awareness presentations at the Harbourview location specifically for senior customers.

The sessions covered current fraud trends, their impacts, and included live examples of previous fraud incidents in Bermuda. The presentations concluded with a discussion on common tactics employed by fraudsters to target unsuspecting victims.

Convex End-to-End

On 27th April, 2024, HSBC colleagues took part in the Convex End-to-End, the largest charity fundraiser on the Island, marking its 35th annual event.

Since its inception in 1988, the event has raised over $6.5 million for 212 charities.

As a sponsor, HSBC volunteers actively supported the event at their water station near Grape Bay on the railway trail in Paget, providing water and snacks while cheering on participants.

Our History in Bermuda Bank of Bermuda Limited was founded in 1889 and acquired by HSBC (and renamed HSBC Bank Bermuda Limited) in 2004.

HSBC Bank Bermuda Limited (the Bank) remains incorporated in Bermuda, and is licensed and regulated to conduct Banking and Investment Business by the Bermuda Monetary Authority. It is wholly owned by HSBC Bank plc. When Bank of Bermuda de-listed from the Bermuda Stock Exchange (BSX) in 2004, HSBC Holdings took a secondary listing on the BSX, which remains in place.

The Bank, headquartered at 37 Front Street, Hamilton, operates out of three branches. The bank provides a full range of banking and asset management services to retail and corporate clients and differentiates itself in the Bermuda market through its ability to connect clients internationally through HSBC’s global network. The Bank is rated A- by S&P and, at end 2023, held approximately 55 per cent of Bermuda’s total deposits.
