Technology’s Role in Bermuda’s Hospitality Industry
As we step into 2025, I am excited to share how technology is transforming the worlds of learning and hospitality here in Bermuda. Digital advancements are reshaping every aspect of life, and education is no exception. Students are growing up in a digital age where access to knowledge is immediate, and the skills required for success are evolving.
Technology’s influence is evident in every avenue we pursue, including hospitality, a cornerstone of Bermuda’s economy. With the upcoming reopening of the Fairmont Southampton, there is no better time to highlight the vital role education plays in preparing young Bermudians to excel in this industry.
The partnership with Cambridge Beaches, one of Bermuda’s premier tourism establishments, will allow students to interact with and learn from industry experts, helping them obtain relevant credentials in a supportive setting. This collaboration will be based at Sandys Secondary Middle School, which will transform into Bermuda’s third Senior Signature School, delivering the Hospitality and Tourism and Education Services Signature Learning Programmes in September 2025. The school’s transformation is a prime example of how we are aligning education with industry needs. By blending traditional service values with modern technological tools, students will learn the foundational
principles of hospitality and explore how technology enhances every aspect of guest relations, operational efficiency, and customer satisfaction.
Technology is deeply integrated into hospitality, from online booking systems to personalised guest experiences powered by AI. Understanding these tools is essential for success in the industry.
For instance, technology allows hotels and resorts to offer customised experiences for their guests. Whether through mobile apps that provide seamless check-ins, smart room controls, or data-driven insights that anticipate guest preferences, technology is revolutionising how we deliver exceptional service. These advancements not only improve the guest experience but also create exciting career opportunities for those entering the field. Students who embrace these tools will be well-positioned to excel in Bermuda’s hospitality industry and beyond.
Students, technology is in everything we do, and hospitality is no exception. The skills you gain in understanding how to use these tools will be the foundation of your success tomorrow. Together, let us embrace the tools and opportunities to build a stronger, smarter Bermuda.
The Hon. Diallo Rabain, JP, MP Minister of Education
Finding Purpose in Numbers
Amber Furtado’s Career Path at Deloitte
What made you choose a career in accounting?
Initially, I didn’t see myself pursuing a career in accounting. During high school, my interests leaned more toward photography and art. However, in 2019, I began working as an Admin/ Accounts/Personal Assistant, which introduced me to the financial side of business. I quickly became captivated by balancing numbers, problem-solving, and organising financial data. That experience sparked my passion for accounting and inspired me to pursue a business degree as the first step in my career journey.
How did you pick your university and major?
My decision to attend Acadia University in Nova Scotia was largely influenced by my sister, Chelsy Furtado, who had attended the school and provided invaluable guidance. After earning my Associate degree at Bermuda College, I transferred to Acadia to complete my Bachelor of Business Administration with Honours. Initially, I was unsure if accounting was the right path for me, but my internship with Deloitte in the summer of 2023 solidified my interest. That experience deepened my understanding of the field and confirmed my passion for pursuing a career in accounting.
Why a CPA?
Although I didn’t major in accounting, I’m currently working toward earning my CPA designation through CPA Atlantic. To prepare, I am completing the prerequisite courses (PREP) before advancing to the CPA Professional Education Program (PEP). I chose the CPA designation because it is universally recognised as a mark of professionalism and expertise. The benefits—enhanced earning potential, job security, and global mobility—make it an invaluable
credential, especially as someone from Bermuda, a small island with big opportunities worldwide.
Why did you choose Deloitte Bermuda?
Throughout my studies, I was consistently told that joining a Big 4 accounting firm was the best way to obtain a CPA designation. My internship with Deloitte Bermuda in 2023 was a turning point. The supportive environment, enriching learning opportunities, and mentorship I received convinced me that Deloitte was the ideal place to launch my career. By the end of my internship, I was offered a fulltime position to start after graduation—a decision I accepted without hesitation. The relationships I’ve built with colleagues and mentors have only reinforced that I made the right choice.
What is a typical day like for you? There’s no such thing as a “typical” day in audit. Every day brings new challenges and responsibilities, which is something I enjoy about this field. While many assume audit work is repetitive, the reality is far more dynamic. My daily tasks include
performing audit tests, documenting findings, and collaborating with clients to address their concerns. I focus on achieving small successes, knowing that each one builds toward greater accomplishments.
What is the most challenging accounting problem you’ve had to solve?
I wouldn’t say I’ve encountered one particular challenge that stands out, but tracing and reconciling numbers to ensure accuracy can be both demanding and rewarding. Professional scepticism is something we’re taught from the very beginning—critically evaluating information rather than taking it at face value. Even when the numbers appear correct, it’s essential to follow procedures and verify everything to maintain accuracy and integrity.
What is one piece of advice you wish you had been given when you started your career?
I wish someone had told me it’s okay not to have everything figured out at the start. Much of what you need to know comes from hands-on experience. Don’t hesitate to ask questions or make mistakes along the way—they’re invaluable opportunities for learning and growth. Trust the process, and know that confidence and competence will come with time and practice.
How have you made an impact at Deloitte?
At Deloitte, I’ve had the chance to make an impact through both my work and community initiatives. My first audit experience involved planning and interim work for a Deloitte client. By taking on new tasks, maintaining a positive approach, and building strong client relationships, I was able to contribute meaningfully to the team’s success. This effort earned me an Outstanding Performance Award, recognising my alignment with Deloitte’s global Talent Experience values. Beyond work, I’ve also participated in Deloitte’s Impact Day, which focuses on volunteerism and giving back to the community. Contributing to this initiative was incredibly fulfilling, as it allowed me to make a difference outside the workplace while reinforcing Deloitte’s commitment to social impact.

One such leader is Brianna Pacheco, who joined PwC Bermuda full-time after graduating from university and is now pursuing her ACCA designation. Here’s what Brianna had to share about her journey.
Tell us about your experience in the HeadStart Programme:
"The HeadStart Programme has provided invaluable support and encouragement throughout my professional journey so far. The wide range of developmental resources, study leave, and financial assistance has been instrumental in helping me succeed in my ACCA exams. The flexibility and support at PwC have been particularly helpful in balancing work obligations with exam schedules. Additionally, I have a career coach who I meet with regularly to discuss my goals, plan my study strategies, and prepare for upcoming exams."
What general career advice would you give to students and those considering a career in audit or accounting?
"My advice to students is to seize every opportunity available while you’re still at university. Speak to your academic or career counsellor about your aspirations and ensure you select courses aligned with your desired qualifications and jurisdiction. Focus on your studies, but don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. Challenge yourself and make an effort to network with professionals in the workplace—it can make a big difference in shaping your career."
How has PwC’s flexible working environment benefited you?
"The flexible working environment at PwC has significantly enhanced my productivity and allowed me to achieve a better work-life balance. Even during busy seasons, PwC fosters a supportive culture that helps employees manage personal commitments alongside professional obligations. This support
has enabled me to pursue my goals outside of work, such as fitness, sports, and spending time with family."
Let’s hear more about you. Where did you go to school, and why did you pursue a career in audit and accounting?
"I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Finance from the University of the West of England and a Master’s degree from the University of Bristol. My aspiration to pursue a career in accounting began during my time at CedarBridge Academy and was further solidified while studying at Bermuda College. The growing demand for accountants, coupled with my experiences at PwC, has reinforced my decision to follow this career path. Each step I’ve taken has motivated me toward my goal of becoming a qualified accountant. I’m also aware of the diverse and abundant career opportunities available both at PwC and within Bermuda’s professional landscape."
What are you passionate about outside of work?
"Outside of work, I’m passionate about exploring my creative interests, particularly painting, cooking, and baking. These activities are therapeutic for me and allow me to connect with others through art and food. I also love spending time outdoors, especially on long walks with my dogs, which helps me reconnect with nature. Additionally, my faith and relationship with God are central to my life. They guide me in my personal growth and inspire me to be a positive influence in alignment with His plans for me."

The Path to Career Success
How EY develops Bermuda’s Future Leaders in Financial Services
For Jaiden Hill, the opportunity to work in financial services allowed him to combine his passion for data management and analytics with risk management. Now a staff consultant at financial services firm EY, Jaiden’s interest in finance began during his undergraduate studies, where he majored in data and information management.
“I was fascinated by how I could use my skills in data management and analytics within the risk management and finance fields,” Jaiden said. “I have since decided to deepen my knowledge by pursuing a certification in financial risk (GARP FRM).”
Jaiden credits EY for playing a significant role in shaping his career. “Working on the risk consulting team has provided me with hands-on experience, allowing me to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios,” he shared. “The collaborative environment and mentorship from experienced colleagues have helped me develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills.”
However, Jaiden noted that his
journey hasn’t been without challenges. “One of the most difficult aspects of the consulting field is keeping up with constantly evolving regulations and standards, as well as understanding the many industries we work with,” he explained. “The financial services landscape is dynamic, and staying informed requires continuous learning and adaptability.”
For Jaiden, the most rewarding part of his career so far has been helping clients solve complex problems. “It’s incredibly fulfilling to identify issues and provide solutions related to their internal processes, procedures, and documentation,” he said.
His advice to young professionals considering a career in accounting or financial services? “There are so many different opportunities in this industry beyond the traditional accounting practices of assurance and tax services,” he said. “Fields like tech, compliance, actuarial science, and risk offer great avenues for career growth while providing a broad industry perspective— something EY excels at delivering to its employees.”
For Milla Wolffe, studying business at university sparked her interest in finance. Bermuda’s thriving corporate environment naturally drew her toward the sector.
“The island offers immense opportunities for career progression and diverse roles within the financial sector, making it an exciting field to explore,” said Milla, now a staff consultant at EY.
When asked about her most rewarding experience at EY, Milla shared, “Gaining confidence in my role has been incredibly fulfilling. The support and encouragement from my team, as well as their willingness to answer my questions, has helped me acquire new skills quickly and grow professionally.”
That growth hasn’t come without its challenges. “The most difficult part has
been learning the technical aspects of each internal audit or engagement,” she said. “Every project introduces something new to research and understand, but while challenging, this constant learning is rewarding and essential for developing expertise and adaptability.”
Milla’s consulting role at EY offers a unique experience for a Big 4 firm. “It provides significant responsibility on projects and the chance to engage directly with clients,” she explained. “This has helped me hone essential skills like communication, but despite the responsibility, there’s always strong support from my team and managers.”
EY’s flexibility and encouragement to explore different projects have been invaluable to Milla. “In just four months, I’ve worked on various technical topics, which has helped me discover my true interests and strengths,” she said.
Her advice for others? “Be open to every opportunity that comes your way,” she urged. “Even if you don’t feel fully prepared, say yes and learn as you go. During my 2023 summer internship at EY, I gained incredible insights and truly enjoyed the experience. The internship program gives a real-world preview of full-time positions, which is so valuable.”
Through their unique journeys, Jaiden and Milla exemplify how EY provides a platform for young Bermudians to develop skills, overcome challenges, and achieve their career aspirations in the dynamic world of financial services.

Balancing Books and Emotions
Thriving through high school and college
High school and college can be exciting yet overwhelming phases of life. With mental health challenges affecting over 60% of students, it’s essential to recognize the signs, seek help, and develop strategies to support your well-being. Here’s a comprehensive guide to navigating the highs and lows of student life.
Mental Wellness: Your Guide to Navigating Student Life
Embarking on the journey through high school and college is an exciting time filled with new opportunities and experiences. However, it can also bring unique challenges, with over 60% of students facing mental health issues. Building emotional resilience and equipping yourself with strategies to maintain mental wellness can make all the difference in this transformative phase.
Recognizing the Signs and Seeking Help
Understanding the early signs of mental health challenges is a critical step. Behavioral changes, mood swings, trouble focusing, or a persistent feeling of sadness might indicate a deeper issue. If you notice these signs, talk to a trusted friend, family member, teacher, or counselor. High schools often have guidance counselors, while colleges typically offer a range of support services, including mental health counseling. You can
also seek support from your church or community groups, which may provide understanding and resources to help you through tough times.
Balancing Relationships and Academics
Juggling friendships, romantic relationships, and academics can sometimes feel overwhelming. Set boundaries, communicate openly with those around you, and prioritize self-care. Recognize and distance yourself from toxic relationships, and remember that your mental well-being comes first.
Building a Support Network
One of the benefits of school life is the opportunity to meet new people and form meaningful connections. Cultivate friendships, join clubs, and engage with classmates and mentors. A reliable support system not only enhances your social life but also contributes to emotional resilience during difficult times.
Managing Stress and Anxiety
The combination of high academic expectations, social pressures, and life transitions often leads to stress and anxiety. Equip yourself with healthy coping mechanisms like mindfulness exercises, regular physical activity, and effective time management. Don’t hesitate to lean on teachers, counselors, or support groups when you need guidance.
Dealing with Depression
Persistent sadness or feelings of hopelessness may signal depression. If you’re struggling, reach out to a trusted adult, school counselor, or mental health professional. Engage in activities you enjoy and join clubs or groups that align with your interests—it can be a great way to find joy and purpose.
Addressing Substance Misuse
Peer pressure and curiosity can sometimes lead to substance misuse. Be aware of the risks and understand that it’s okay to say no. If you or someone you know is dealing with substance misuse, reach out to counselors, support groups, or helplines for help.
Practicing Self-Care
Self-care is essential to maintaining mental wellness. Prioritize adequate sleep, eat balanced meals, and stay active. Regular exercise not only boosts your mood but also improves your focus and energy levels. Establishing healthy routines can have a lasting positive impact on your overall well-being.
Seeking Professional Help
There’s no shame in seeking professional help when needed—it’s a sign of strength, not weakness. Most schools offer counseling services, and there are also community resources and mental health organizations available to provide support.
Promoting Mental Health Awareness
Reducing the stigma around mental health starts with conversations. Create an environment where you and your peers feel comfortable discussing struggles and offering support.
Awareness and understanding help foster a community of compassion and resilience.
By taking a proactive approach to mental health, students can better navigate the challenges of high school and college while enhancing their overall well-being. Remember, seeking help is a courageous step, and with the right strategies and support system, you can thrive both academically and personally.

Vaping: more dangerous than you might think
Research shows vaping is causing serious medical conditions, even among young people
In recent years, the number of young people in Bermuda, aged 18 or under, who have either tried or taken up vaping has increased, and this poses a great risk to their health.
But why should we be worried about this when vaping isn’t as bad as smoking?
For a start, many don’t always know the exact ingredients contained in the liquids they’re vaping. Nor do they appreciate the potential consequences of these substances on their brain, lungs, heart, skin, eyes, mouth, throat, and sinuses.
The Bermuda Government’s Department for National Drug Control did a National School Survey in 2023 which found that 16% of Bermuda’s students aged between 12 and 18 admitted to vaping nicotine, marijuana, and ‘flavouring’.
The most common vape substance among young people is Nicotine, followed by ‘Just Flavouring’, and Marijuana/ hash oil. Just Flavouring is the flavoured liquid known as ‘e-liquid’ or ‘vape juice’. It’s marketed well, looks cool, tastes great and comes in a wide selection of colourful containers. This liquid is heated in e-cigarettes and vape rigs, creating an aerosol that users inhale.
However, according to Johns Hopkins cardiologist Michael Blaha, these great tasting, cool liquids can also be deadly.
This is because flavour is just one of the ingredients in e-liquid. Vape juices usually include nicotine and dye as well as several other additives and chemicals. Even the heating coil, which allows the liquid to become an inhalable aerosol, releases new chemical substances and trace metals into the user’s lungs.
EVALI, which stands for ‘e-cigarette, or vaping, product use associated lung injury’ is a serious medical condition whereby your lungs become damaged from substances contained in e-cigarettes and vaping products. Symptoms include shortness of breath, cough, and chest pain.
What’s more worrying is that, in the US,
patients were under 18 years old.
If you’re young you’re vulnerable
The substances in e-cigarettes disproportionately impact younger bodies.
Nicotine has been proven to harm the adolescent brain, because it is still developing up until the age of 25.
According to the US Centre for Disease Control (CDC), using nicotine while your brain is still developing can harm the parts that control attention, learning, mood, and impulse control.
At a time when diagnoses of conditions such as ADHD (attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder), ADD (attention deficit disorder) and anxiety are at an all-time high, this trend is particularly worrying and nicotine addiction using e-cigarettes can make these conditions worse.
In addition to damaging the brain and lungs, vaping can irritate the eyes, damage the heart, cause congestion and nose bleeds, give users a dry mouth, sore throat and bleeding gums, and cause skin irritation and rashes.
Addiction Risk
One of the reasons people say they enjoy vaping is because it releases their stress and anxiety. They think it clears their head and gives them a burst of energy, but this is just the short-term effect of the nicotine, and the more you inhale, the more you need.
Nicotine is addictive and using it when you’re young increases the risk of addiction to cigarettes or other drugs later in life, with potentially disastrous consequences for your overall health and wellbeing.
How to Stop
For a start, don’t start. It is very hard to say ‘no’ to something, particularly when your peers are doing it and putting you under pressure to do so, but if you value your health, sporting abilities and bank balance – vaping costs money –choose friends who respect your decision.
If you have started and want to stop, support is available. Please talk to your school counsellor, or a medical professional.

Reviving Bermuda’s Trades: A Pathway to Prosperity
The Construction Association of Bermuda makes the case for investing in trades careers
The future of trades in Bermuda has become a pressing topic. Recent developments within the public school system, particularly in trades training and certification, represent a much-needed step forward in producing qualified local talent. However, for a country that prides itself on leadership in many fields, trades have long been neglected, with little meaningful progress in training and development. It’s easy to point fingers at successive governments over the last 40 years— especially since the closure of the Bermuda Technical
Institute—but the reality is that industry also shares the blame. Professional sectors like accounting, law, teaching, and engineering all have established feeder programs, career fairs, workshops, and mentoring initiatives to create pathways into their fields. Yet, within the trades, such programs are glaringly absent. While some contractors have developed in-house training programs—often for their own benefit—there is little coordinated effort across the industry to nurture and recruit talent.
There is some good news. The Department of
PLAN A CAREER, BUILD A FUTURE…
The Construction Association of Bermuda (CAOB) is a registered charity that is dedicated to making the construction industry safer, more efficient, more competitive and better able to contribute to the development of Bermuda.
The CAOB Scholarship provides awards to students enrolled in a construction related field either at university or applied technology program. Fields include engineering, surveying, construction management, masonry, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, HVAC and welding.

Workforce Development is launching a programme in 2025 that focuses on masonry, carpentry, and plumbing. With 12 participants already enrolled, this initiative is a solid start. Applicants are required to meet basic educational requirements, such as having a GED or high school diploma, and will complete an NCCER Core course covering safety, mathematics, and tool knowledge. If successful, this program could become a recurring initiative and potentially serve as a feeder system for the public school curriculum.
However, training and certification are only part of the equation. Another challenge is the perception of trades as a viable career option. Despite the promise of great pay, job security, and
opportunities worldwide, the trades are often overlooked in favour of careers in technology or bespoke industries. Advancements in technology have made even basic tasks, like writing a paragraph, simpler through tools like voice-to-text and AI. Young people are more likely to aspire to careers involving keyboards than careers requiring hammers and saws.
This is not a problem unique to Bermuda. Globally, there is a shortage of skilled tradespeople. In the United States alone, it is estimated that over three million trade jobs remain unfilled. The reality of some physically demanding conditions—freezing steelwork sites or the baking sun for masons—can deter many 20-year-olds when considering their career paths.
Still, the potential is immense. With the right combination of tools, marketing, education, and enthusiasm, young Bermudians can be inspired to pursue fulfilling careers in the trades. These professions offer the chance to always be in demand, earn excellent compensation, and contribute meaningfully to the economy. It’s time for Bermuda’s schools, government, and industry leaders to come together, coordinate their efforts, and ensure a brighter future for the trades.

How BEDC’s Programmes Empower Young Innovators
Bermuda’s young innovators are transforming the island’s economic landscape with bold ideas and entrepreneurial spirit. With business ownership becoming increasingly accessible, the next generation is stepping up to create ventures that solve problems, showcase creativity, and foster economic growth. To support this wave of ambition, the Bermuda Economic Development Corporation (BEDC) provides funding, mentorship, and training programs like the Summer Student Entrepreneur Program (SSEP) and the Wave of Opportunity Pitch Competition, empowering young Bermudians to turn their ideas into thriving businesses.
Summer Student Entrepreneur Program (SSEP): Building Foundational Skills
The SSEP is an eight-week initiative designed to equip Bermudians aged 13–23 with the tools to successfully launch and manage their businesses. Through handson training, mentorship, and financial support—including startup funds and a weekly stipend—participants learn essential business concepts like planning, marketing, and SWOT analysis. They also gain real-world experience by showcasing their products at retail locations and events.
One standout participant, Nico Bean, founder of Flow by Nico, shared how the program helped him grow his business: “SSEP showed me what
Déshun Simmons, Assistant Communication & Development Officer Bermuda Economic Development Corporation
was possible for my business. I learned the ins and outs of entrepreneurship, networked with key people, and got my brand out there. BEDC provided great opportunities like a sponsored booth at Harbour Nights and a feature on their podcast, helping me promote Flow by Nico. Most importantly, I met inspiring mentors and learned about BEDC’s other programs, which led me to the 2024 Wave of Opportunity Pitch Competition.”
Wave of Opportunity Pitch Competition: Accelerating Growth
Sponsored by the Global Atlantic Re Foundation, the Wave of Opportunity Pitch Competition gives Bermuda’s entrepreneurs a platform to showcase their ideas and compete for funding. The Youth Entrepreneur Category, open to ages 16–25, offers up to $25,000 in startup funding, helping young business owners scale their ventures. Many competitors, including past winners, began their entrepreneurial journeys through the SSEP
Empowering the Next Generation
program, highlighting its role in nurturing talent. Participants pitch their ideas to a panel of industry experts, gaining invaluable feedback and experience. Alongside the Youth Category, the competition also includes awards for Local Industry Innovators and a People’s Choice winner, fostering community engagement and recognition.
For Nico, winning the Youth Category was life-changing:
“Winning was an incredible milestone for Flow by Nico. The process—from applying to the final pitch—was intense, but BEDC’s support made a big difference. Their pitch training helped me refine my strategy, and when competition day came, I focused on presenting my best. Hearing my name called as a winner left me speechless.”
Through BEDC’s Pitch Bootcamp, finalists receive public speaking, business strategy, and presentation training, ensuring they’re well-prepared to articulate their ideas confidently and effectively.
BEDC’s commitment to Bermuda’s future extends far beyond financial assistance. Programs like the SSEP and initiatives like the Wave of Opportunity Pitch Competition provide mentorship, education, and hands-on experience, enabling young Bermudians to build sustainable businesses and thrive in the global economy. Many participants, like Nico, continue to expand their ventures and join BEDC’s incubator and accelerator programs for further support.
When asked for advice for aspiring entrepreneurs, Nico shared:
“Follow your passion and just start. No matter the circumstances, take that first step and don’t be afraid to fail. Some days you’ll make nothing; some days you’ll make hundreds or even thousands—you just have to put in the work. If you feel like giving up, keep going. Growth takes time, but if you’re consistent and passionate, you’ll see results. Find a mentor—BEDC has many, and I still communicate with mine today. The opportunities are endless; you just have to start.”

Standing Strong
Overcoming Bullying in High School and College
Bullying is a serious issue that affects students of all ages, including from high school to college. It can take many forms, from verbal insults and social exclusion to physical aggression and online harassment. No matter how it happens, bullying can have a lasting impact on a person’s confidence, mental health, and overall well-being. If you or someone you know is experiencing bullying, it's important to remember that you are not alone. There are ways to address the situation, seek help, and build resilience. Here’s what you need to know about bullying and how to handle it.
Forms of Bullying: Recognising the Signs
Bullying can happen in different ways, and sometimes it’s not always easy to identify. Here are the most common types:
• Verbal Bullying – This includes insults, name-calling, teasing, and spreading rumors. It often happens in person but can also take place through text messages or social media.
• Physical Bullying – Involves hitting, pushing, tripping, or damaging someone’s belongings. This type of bullying is more common in high school but can occur in college as well.
• Social Bullying (Exclusion) – This is when someone is deliberately left out, ignored, or isolated from a group. It can happen in school, at social events, or in online group chats.
• Cyberbullying – Bullying that takes place through digital platforms like social media, text messages, or emails. This can include spreading rumors
online, posting embarrassing photos or videos without permission, or sending hateful messages.
The Impact of Bullying
Bullying can take a toll on your mental health and self-esteem. It can lead to stress, anxiety, depression, and difficulty concentrating in school or college. If left unchecked, it may even cause long-term emotional distress. That’s why it’s so important to take action and not suffer in silence.
How to Handle Bullying
If you are being bullied, know that you have options. Here are some steps you can take to address the situation:
1. Speak Up and Seek Support
• Confide in someone you trust— whether it's a teacher, school counselor, friend, or family member.
• If you feel safe, try standing up to the bully by confidently telling them to stop. Bullies often target people who they think won’t fight back.
• In college, reach out to student support services or campus security if you’re experiencing bullying.
2. Keep a Record
• If you’re dealing with bullying, especially cyberbullying, keep screenshots or written records of any messages, posts, or incidents.
• Having evidence can help when you report the issue to a teacher, administrator, or school official.
3. Report the Bullying
• Schools and colleges often have anti-bullying policies in place. Report the bullying to a teacher, guidance counselor, or school administrator.
• If you’re being bullied online, report the abusive behavior to the platform where it’s happening. Social media sites like Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat have options to report harmful content.
4. Stay Calm and Don’t Engage
• Bullies often want a reaction. Try to stay
calm and not let them see that they’re affecting you.
• If it’s online harassment, avoid responding to hurtful messages. Instead, block the person and report them.
5. Surround Yourself with Positive People
• Spend time with friends who make you feel valued and supported. Having a strong support system can help you feel more confident.
• Join clubs or activities where you can meet new people and build friendships outside of school or college.
How to Help a Friend Who’s Being Bullied
If you see someone being bullied, don’t just stand by—help them. Here’s how:
• Be a Friend – Let them know they’re not alone. Offer support and encourage them to talk to someone who can help.
• Speak Up – If you feel safe, step in and tell the bully to stop. Sometimes, just one person standing up can make a difference.
• Report It – Even if you’re not the one being bullied, you can still report the behavior to a teacher, counselor, or school official.
Where to Seek Help
If bullying is affecting your mental health, don’t hesitate to seek help from:
• School Guidance Counselors – They can offer advice and support.
• College Support Services – Many universities have mental health resources for students.
• Helplines and Online Support –Organisations like Childline (for teens), the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, and local crisis hotlines offer free and confidential support.
Final Thoughts
No one deserves to be bullied. If you’re experiencing bullying, remember that it’s not your fault, and you don’t have to deal with it alone. There are people who care about you and want to help. Speak up, seek support, and stand strong— because you deserve to feel safe and respected.
If you or someone you know is struggling, reach out for help. You are not alone, and there is always a way forward.

Careers in Cancer Care
Cancer is a leading cause of death globally, and unfortunately, Bermuda is no exception. Since cancer transforms normal cells into tumour cells in a progressive process, early detection and treatment can significantly reduce the risk of mortality. Even better, a substantial percentage of cancers can be prevented altogether.
If saving lives through cancer prevention, detection, or treatment sounds like your calling, there are multiple career opportunities right here in Bermuda that allow you to make a meaningful impact.
Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre is a registered local charity providing the highest standard of early detection, radiation treatment, support, care, and education for cancer. A cornerstone of the Centre’s mission is equal access care, meaning its services are provided free of co-pay, regardless of a patient’s health insurance status. Community donations to the Equal Access Fund enable the Centre to subsidise services for those in need.
The Centre offers a range of clinical services, including diagnostic imaging, radiation therapy, and patient services. In addition to its clinical teams, the Centre
employs public health educators, as well as professionals in marketing, fundraising, accounting, and compliance.
Career Opportunities in Cancer Care
The diagnostic imaging team includes radiologists, mammography technologists, sonographers (ultrasound technologists), bone densitometry technologists, medical transcriptionists, and nurses. This team conducts 3D and digital mammography, ultrasound, breast biopsies, and bone densitometry.
Cancer navigators provide personalised support by collaborating with the medical team and patients to ensure timely connections with the right specialists. The Centre also hosts multidisciplinary team reviews to determine the most effective care pathway for each patient.
Within the radiation therapy team, you’ll find radiation oncologists, medical physicists, radiation therapists, and radiation oncology nurses. This team works in clinical affiliation with DanaFarber/Brigham Cancer Center. Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre was the first facility outside the United States to be accredited for radiation oncology by the American College of Radiology, the gold standard of accreditation.
Patient services staff ensure the Centre consistently meets client needs. This team includes front desk staff, transcriptionists, and clinical managers who play vital roles in ensuring the smooth delivery of care.
Is a Career in Cancer Care Right for You?
If you’re considering a career in cancer care, think about your strengths and interests. Professionals in clinical services often have a strong aptitude for biology and/or physics and a keen interest in healthcare with a focus on patient care. They tend to be logical thinkers with strong teamwork, problem-solving, and communication skills. Technologists, in particular, are passionate about using state-of-the-art technology to improve patient outcomes.
Depending on the area you choose to pursue, educational options range from certificates and diplomas to degrees and professional certifications from accredited institutions.

Passionate About Midwifery
Bermuda Hospitals
Board midwife Jennifer Ross originally set her sights on becoming an Emergency Room nurse, but that changed during her maternity rotation in nursing school. “I immediately fell
in love with labour and delivery,” she says.
Unlike other areas of nursing, midwives are most often part of a joyful experience for patients and their families. Recognising this, Jennifer pursued
midwifery as her nursing speciality and hasn’t looked back since.
Her role involves supporting women in labour and ensuring that both mothers and their babies are well cared for at every step. She also assists with patient assessments, which range from routine visits to urgent situations, such as preparing for a caesarean section or investigating unexpected symptoms.
Jennifer also provides antenatal care, including managing inductions, closely monitoring high blood pressure during pregnancy, and supporting
"Unlike other areas of nursing, midwives are most often a part of a joyful experience"
mothers experiencing Hyperemesis Gravidarum—a severe form of morning sickness.
To specialise in midwifery, candidates must first qualify as registered nurses. Jennifer advises: “Those interested should be prepared for a journey that is just as challenging as it is rewarding. Midwifery— and nursing in general—is about passion, resilience, and a genuine love for helping others during some of the most life-changing moments they’ll ever experience. It’s so much more than just a career.”
She adds, “I truly love being a midwife—it’s a beautiful, fulfilling profession. I hope to see more Bermudians pursuing midwifery in the near future!”

Caring for the Future
Bermuda College: Training Bermuda’s Next Generation of Nurses
Bermuda College’s nursing faculty is shaping the future of healthcare on the island. With a passion for training the next generation of nurses, educators like Kathy-Ann Swan, Reneé Faulcon, Dr. Shaunae Smith, and Tammoi Simons play a vital role in preparing students for a demanding yet rewarding career.
A Calling, Not Just a Career
“It is a calling, and I always tell my students that not everyone can be a nurse,” says Ms. Faulcon, Senior Nursing Lecturer. “This is a profession where we're not doing it for ourselves—we're doing it for other people. You have to have that passion for caring.”
Since launching in 2013, Bermuda College’s nursing programme has expanded to include pre-med, pre-health, and diagnostic imaging technology courses. The Associate of Science (Nursing) programme is a two-year course designed in collaboration with the Bermuda Nursing and Midwifery Council, the Department of Health, Bermuda Hospitals Board, and other key stakeholders. It follows an American model and prepares students to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN), the gateway to becoming a registered nurse (RN).
Graduates can then continue their studies abroad or apply for Bermuda’s Transition to Practice Programme at the Bermuda Hospitals Board.
Hands-On Training for Real-World Care
Beyond theory, students gain valuable practical experience through clinical rotations at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, the Mid-Atlantic Wellness Institute, and local medical practices. A state-of-the-art simulation lab—made possible through the Bermuda College Foundation—provides students with real-world training using four high-tech patient simulators.
Bermuda College also partners with overseas hospitals, allowing students to gain additional clinical experience at
Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Massachusetts and The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto.
Addressing Bermuda’s Nursing Shortage
“There is a global shortage of nurses, but in Bermuda, the concern is the shortage of Bermudian nurses,” explains Ms. Faulcon. “We need healthcare professionals who understand our culture and unique healthcare needs.”
While international nurses play a crucial role, increasing the number of Bermudians in the field is vital to strengthening local healthcare.
Challenges and Rewards of Nursing
Nursing is a demanding profession, requiring emotional resilience and adaptability. “You never know what patient will walk through the door,” says Ms. Faulcon. “You have to be flexible, and you have to learn how to manage your emotions.”
Dealing with critically ill patients and loss can take an emotional toll. “Sometimes you want to cry, but you have to be there for the family and ensure that patients have a comfortable death,” she explains. Self-care is essential for nurses to maintain their well-being.
Breaking Gender Stereotypes
Traditionally, nursing has been a femaledominated profession, but more men are now entering the field. Clinical instructor Tammoi Simons recalls working with a male student in her class.
“It was nice to have a gentleman. He brought balance,” she says. “Instead of being babied, he motivated the group, saying, ‘Come on, let’s get this done!’”
This shift highlights the importance of diversity in nursing, ensuring that all patients receive culturally competent care.
A Passionate Team
The success of Bermuda College’s nursing program is driven by its dedicated instructors. “I couldn’t ask for a better team,” says Ms. Swan, Director of Nursing and Allied Health. “The part-time adjunct instructors are passionate about the course, and that makes all the difference.”
With a strong curriculum, real-world training, and a team of committed educators, Bermuda College is preparing the next generation of nurses to provide compassionate, high-quality care for Bermuda’s healthcare system.

SMART MONEY TIPS FOR TEENS
HSBC Bermuda offers some money-saving tips for teens
As a teenager, there are plenty of things you’d like to buy if you had a little more money: the latest trainers, a new phone, your first bike, or even a car.
Saving up for these things can feel like a challenge, but it does not need to be. By following a few simple tips, you can start building a savings pot to spend on whatever you want, while still enjoying some disposable cash for day-to-day expenses.
Here are our best savings tips for teenagers.
1. Open a savings account
A savings account can help you keep a pot of money separate from your main account, reducing the temptation to spend it. Many savings accounts also offer better interest rates, meaning you can grow your savings faster.
The best way to manage a savings account is to add to it regularly and withdraw as little as possible. Setting up a direct debit allows you to save automatically without having to think about it. It is easy to make a plan with good intentions, but human error or forgetfulness can get in the way. A direct debit removes this hurdle and makes saving more consistent.
Different types of savings accounts offer various benefits and restrictions, so check the terms and conditions carefully to ensure the account aligns with your personal goals and saving habits.
As a teenager, you may need a parent or guardian present to open a savings account, and you might need to meet certain eligibility criteria.
2. Figure out how much you can afford to save
Setting a regular savings target each month is the best way to build your savings consistently. If you have a regular income from a part-time job or allowance, consider adding a percentage of it to your savings account each month. Leave the remaining amount for everyday expenses and treats.
The more you save, the faster you will reach your goal. However, it is important to be realistic. Find a balance that maximises your savings while leaving enough disposable cash to enjoy yourself occasionally.
3. Set a savings goal
Setting a specific goal to reward your saving efforts can be a great incentive to stay on track. This could be something specific, like a bike or a trip overseas, or
simply an amount you want to reach by a particular date. Understanding why you are saving can motivate you to stick to your plan.
Make sure your goals are ambitious yet realistic. Leaving yourself too short of everyday cash can lead to frustration and make it harder to stick to your plan.
Whatever your goal, keep track of your progress. Noting down your achievements can encourage you to stay committed and even help you reach your goal faster.
4. Review your spending
Before you start saving, it is a good idea to review how you currently manage your money. Do you often run out of money before the end of the month, or do you have some left over?
Make a list of your regular expenses, such as food, clothes, and nights out. Identify any areas where you might be overspending and consider cutting back to free up more money for your savings goals.
5. Keep going
Saving money can feel like a long road at first, but it is important to stick with it. Do not be disheartened if challenges arise along the way. As long as you consistently put money aside and resist the temptation to dip into it too often, your ultimate savings goal will remain within reach.
6. The earlier, the better
It is never too early to start saving for your future. As a teenager, time is on your side, and you can take advantage of compound interest (interest on interest). Starting early is a significant advantage.
In the long term, investing can be an excellent way to grow your savings and achieve specific financial goals. Saving to invest is a smart strategy for building your funds for the future.
Take the Next Step
To find out more about opening a savings account, visit www.hsbc.bm. You can apply online at Become A Customer | Apply For An Account Online - HSBC BM.
If you are under 18, we recommend sitting down with your parent or guardian to open an account. Alternatively, call 2995959 to book an appointment and speak with someone at the bank about your savings goals.
Reach for the Skies: A Journey in Aviation
For Sebastian Brisson, the love of aviation began in his childhood, during family trips to visit relatives in Canada. “I was always so fascinated by the airports and the aircraft,” recalls Sebastian, now a Flight Operations Inspector with the Bermuda Civil Aviation Authority (BCAA). Those early experiences sparked a lifelong passion that would eventually lead him to soar to great heights in his aviation career.
As he approached his
final year at Saltus Grammar School, Sebastian couldn’t shake the dream of becoming a pilot. His research led him to the prestigious Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida, which he describes as “a natural fit.” He graduated in 2009 with a degree in Aeronautical Science and continued on to graduate school, as the challenging economy at the time made securing a job difficult.
As the aviation industry
recovered, Sebastian began his career as a flight instructor, gaining valuable experience before moving on to work as a pilot. Today, he splits his time between two exciting roles: serving as a Captain on a Global Express jet for Solairus Aviation, based in New York, and contributing to Bermuda’s aviation industry as a Flight Operations Inspector at the BCAA. In his regulatory role, Sebastian oversees the safety and compliance of Bermudaregistered aircraft, allowing him to combine his passion for flying with the opportunity to give back to his home
island.
Sebastian offers this advice to aspiring pilots: “If you want to fly for a living, research the applicable immigration requirements— getting work authorisation in some jurisdictions can be challenging. And find a mentor within the industry. Having someone to guide you can be invaluable to your success.”
Sebastian’s journey is proof that with determination, planning, and a love for aviation, it’s possible to turn your childhood dreams into a soaring career.

Beyond the Call of Duty
Full-Time Careers in the Royal Bermuda Regiment
From a former chef proving a point to a cadet returning to explore military life, the Royal Bermuda Regiment’s (RBR) full-time staff members come from diverse backgrounds with unique stories of how they joined the battalion. What unites them is their shared ambition and dedication to service.
While most RBR soldiers and officers balance parttime military duties with other careers, the regiment also employs more than 40 full-time staff members who help drive its operations and initiatives.
Corporal Joliza Vanderpool enlisted in October 2015 and completed her recruit foundation course in January 2016. “Someone told me I’d never make it through recruit
camp, and nine years later, I’m still here,” she shared.
Before becoming a fulltime RBR staff member, Cpl Vanderpool worked as a chef and later as a hotel front desk receptionist and night auditor.
“The balance was perfect for me,” she explained.
In March 2024, Cpl Vanderpool transitioned to a full-time role as
LOOKING TO GAIN SKILLS, CHALLENGE YOURSELF & LEAD?
the Regimental Career Management Officer’s Assistant, focusing on recruitment and public engagement. “The position suits me because I’m very much a people person—a social butterfly,” the 32-yearold Paget resident said.
Looking to the future, Cpl Vanderpool hopes to expand her horizons through travel and professional development courses. “I’m excited to see how far I can go,” she added.
Lieutenant Andrew Wallace has always been fascinated by the military. Although conscripted in 2013, he deferred his service to study military history in the UK. Voluntarily returning to Bermuda in 2019, he completed recruit camp in February and commissioned as an officer in November.
Initially balancing his RBR commitments as a platoon commander with his job at the National Museum of Bermuda, Lt Wallace transitioned to a full-time role in April 2023. His responsibilities include managing financial matters between the regiment and the Government, such as invoices and pay.
The 30-year-old Paget resident values the diversity and structure of military life. “Half of the people in the regiment I wouldn’t have met
in my regular life. It forces you to get out of your bubble and meet people from all walks of life,” he said.
Looking ahead, Lt Wallace aims to become a captain and is keen on roles like Adjutant or Training Officer. Ultimately, he hopes to become Commanding Officer within 15 to 20 years.
Corporal Taylor Williams first joined the RBR in 2016, encouraged to explore extracurricular activities. As a former cadet, she was curious to revisit regiment life. “The rest is history,” she said.
Balancing part-time military service with her civilian job at the post office, Cpl Williams found her employer accommodating of her regiment responsibilities. In January 2024, she took on a full-time position as the Quartermaster’s Assistant, managing accounts payable and receivable, as well as overseeing the regiment’s kitchen, canteen, and stationery stores.
“It was a huge leap going from being an administrator to being a manager, and I’ve enjoyed every second of it,” the 34-year-old from Hamilton Parish said. “You can come in here from any walk of life and learn your way to become what you are called to be.”
Cpl Williams is working toward securing training to one day become the RAO. “If I could be a cheerleader for the regiment, I would,” she said with a smile.
The RBR offers a unique and fulfilling career path for individuals with diverse skills and interests. Whether parttime or full-time, its members are united by a shared commitment to service and personal growth.

Preparing Bermuda’s Students for an AI-Driven World
We look at AI and the Future of Education
Artificial intelligence (AI) is not only transforming industries worldwide but also reshaping the very foundations of education. As tools like ChatGPT, machine learning platforms, and advanced analytics become more accessible, they are offering unprecedented opportunities for innovation. For students, understanding and navigating this landscape is essential to succeed in the workforce of the future. The global economy is rapidly evolving, with AI expected to contribute over $15 trillion to the world’s economy by 2030. To remain competitive, Bermuda’s students must be equipped with the skills and mindset to thrive in an AI-driven world.
We spoke with educators across Bermuda’s leading schools to understand how they are preparing students for this brave new world. While AI presents immense opportunities, it also poses challenges. Schools are not only addressing these issues but also finding innovative ways to ensure that students are ready for careers that don’t yet exist. This article explores their insights, highlighting how Bermuda’s education system is evolving to meet the demands of tomorrow.
The Growing Influence of AI in Education
AI is already reshaping education globally, influencing how students learn, how teachers teach, and how institutions prepare for the future. In countries like the United States, the United Kingdom, and China, AI is being used to personalise learning experiences, automate administrative tasks, and provide advanced analytics for better decision-making. Bermuda, despite its
small size, is no exception to this wave of transformation.
In Bermuda, the introduction of AI is met with both enthusiasm and caution. Teachers are exploring innovative ways to integrate AI into their classrooms while remaining mindful of the ethical, social, and practical implications. The goal is not just to use AI but to teach students how to critically engage with it, ensuring they can leverage its power responsibly.
Preparing Students for the Impact of AI
Educators across Bermuda are adopting proactive measures to prepare students for AI’s transformative impact. From curriculum changes to professional development for teachers, schools are ensuring that students are not only aware of AI but also equipped to use it responsibly.
At BHS, the focus is on fostering independence and critical thinking. “AI can replicate and regurgitate information far faster than any human, but it hasn’t demonstrated the capacity for self-derived virtues like empathy and justice,” a school representative noted. By integrating AI literacy into their curriculum, BHS ensures students see AI as a tool to enhance their productivity rather than a shortcut. “Our goal is to teach students to leverage AI responsibly and not let it overshadow human ingenuity,” they added.
Warwick Academy has formed an AI Committee to guide the integration of AI tools into teaching. According to Kelly Reeves and Francoise Wolffe, “We’ve implemented a school-wide initiative where Year 7 students use Microsoft Copilot through our Office 365 subscription, giving them early exposure to AI technologies.” The committee is also
developing ethical guidelines for AI use to ensure that students and staff maintain academic integrity.
At Berkeley Institute, FinTech courses and coding requirements have been introduced for all S1 students. Ms. DeeAh Iris, a FinTech Business Instructor, explained, “Our FinTech II students are mentored by professionals from Chubb, providing real-world insights into AI and its applications.” These programmes ensure that students not only understand AI but also gain practical experience in its use.
Mount Saint Agnes (MSA) has taken a unique approach by combining professional development for teachers with hands-on learning for students. Lisa Stevens, Career and Technology Teacher, shared, “When AI began gaining attention, our administration participated in a virtual conference to assess its potential impact. Since then, we’ve introduced lessons on the appropriate use of AI to both enhance creativity and maintain foundational skills.”
Critical Skills for an AI-Driven Workforce
To thrive in an AI-enhanced world, students need a mix of technical expertise and human-centric skills. Across Bermuda’s schools, educators are emphasising the importance of adaptability, ethical reasoning, and creativity alongside technical skills.
At Saltus Grammar School, Julie Rousseau highlighted the British Columbia Curriculum’s Core Competencies, which include critical thinking, communication, and personal responsibility. “Critical thinking enables students to analyse complex systems, while communication and collaboration foster teamwork across disciplines,” she said. Rousseau also stressed the importance of ethical reasoning, noting, “Students must understand the societal impacts of AI to become responsible global citizens.”
Warwick Academy echoed these sentiments, identifying creativity, adaptability, and emotional intelligence as essential skills. “While AI can automate tasks, it cannot replicate human qualities like empathy and collaboration,” Reeves and Wolffe explained. Their curriculum is designed to foster these competencies through interdisciplinary studies and
collaborative projects.
At BHS, the emphasis is on critical thinking and epistemological skills. A representative explained, “Students must learn to navigate the inherent biases in AI systems and develop the ability to vet information for accuracy.” This is complemented by lessons in prompt engineering, teaching students to interact meaningfully with AI tools like ChatGPT.
Student Interest in AI-Related Fields
Interest in AI-related fields varies across schools. While some institutions report increased demand for AI and STEM programs, others note that traditional disciplines still dominate.
At Berkeley Institute, certifications in AI, coding, and FinTech have gained popularity. “We’ve invited industry experts to share insights and are establishing partnerships to provide students with internships and job placements in AI-
driven sectors,” Iris said.
Conversely, BHS observed a decline in interest in computer science.
“Programming jobs are no longer the straightforward career path they once were. AI now handles many mid-level tasks, leaving only the most complex challenges for humans,” a spokesperson explained. As a result, students are gravitating toward fields that emphasise human values, such as English and the arts.
MSA and Warwick Academy have taken steps to bridge the gap between theory and practice. MSA’s work-shadowing programmess provide students with real-world experience, while Warwick Academy’s STEM enrichment sessions introduce students to advanced technologies like virtual reality and robotics.
Integrating AI into Teaching Methods
AI is not just a subject of study; it’s
also a tool for enhancing education. Teachers across Bermuda are using AI to personalise learning, streamline administrative tasks, and encourage critical thinking.
At Warwick Academy, AI-powered platforms like Revision Village and Magic School help tailor instruction to individual student needs. “These tools analyse student performance and provide real-time feedback, allowing teachers to focus on deeper learning,” Reeves and Wolffe explained.
MSA uses AI to enhance creativity in media and design courses. “Students use AI to remove image backgrounds and then learn to do it manually,” Stevens said. “This comparison helps them evaluate the effectiveness of AI while understanding industry standards.”
At BHS, teachers use AI to reduce their administrative workload. “This allows them to spend more time engaging with
students and focusing on multi-faceted problem-solving,” a representative noted. They also encourage students to use AI for tasks like brainstorming and drafting, emphasising the importance of refining AI-generated output to meet high standards.
AI in Blue-Collar Professions
While AI is often associated with hightech industries, its impact on blue-collar professions is equally significant. Schools in Bermuda are preparing students for these changes by integrating technology into vocational training.
MSA highlighted the role of AI in auto mechanics, where diagnostic tools are replacing traditional inspections. “This shift underscores the importance of adaptability and technical literacy,” Stevens said.
Warwick Academy noted that AI is enhancing efficiency in fields like manufacturing and logistics. “Many roles will require a blend of technical knowledge and human judgment,” Reeves and Wolffe explained. By exposing students to these applications early, the school ensures they
are ready to leverage AI as a partner in their careers.
At BHS, educators see a renewed interest in hands-on professions. “Perhaps AI will inspire young people to value working with their hands again,” a representative said, noting that careers like mechanics and pilotry remain attractive in an AIdriven world.
The Need for Regulation and Ethics
As AI becomes more pervasive, the need for regulation and ethical oversight is critical. Educators across Bermuda are calling for government intervention to ensure responsible AI development.
BHS highlighted concerns about bias and misinformation in AI systems. “There need to be safeguards to protect users and ensure privacy,” a representative said. “Without regulation, the potential for
malicious intent remains a significant risk.”
Saltus Grammar School echoed these concerns, emphasising the importance of teaching ethical reasoning. “Students must understand the societal impacts of AI to navigate its complexities responsibly,” Rousseau said.
Looking Ahead
AI is not just a tool; it is a transformative force that will shape the future of work and society. Bermuda’s schools are stepping up to ensure that students are prepared for this reality. From fostering critical thinking to teaching technical skills, educators are laying the foundation for a workforce that can thrive in an AIdriven world.
For students, the key takeaway is clear: Stay adaptable, think critically, and embrace lifelong learning. The future is here, and it’s powered by AI. As Bermuda continues to navigate this rapidly changing landscape, its young people have the opportunity to lead the way.

Bermuda College Prepares Students for the AI Revolution
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has come a long way since its origins in the mid-20th century. According to ChatGPT, “the earliest use of artificial intelligence (AI) can be traced back to the mid-20th century.” A major milestone was the development of the Logic Theorist in 1955 by Allen Newell and Herbert A. Simon—a program designed to mimic human problem-solving, widely regarded as the first AI program.
Fast forward to 2025, and the applications of AI have expanded dramatically, from advanced medical diagnostics to robotics with human-like capabilities. Google AI Assistant, Gemini, notes: “It’s tricky to pin down the latest use of AI, as it’s a rapidly evolving field with new applications emerging constantly.”
Recognizing the critical importance of education in this rapidly advancing field, Bermuda College, spearheaded by the Bermuda Clarity Institute, is offering the Generative AI Foundations Course as part of its innovative programming. Taught in the College’s newly established innovation center, the course is designed to equip students with the skills needed to harness AI effectively. An advanced-level course will launch in March.
Tawana Flood, Director of the Athora Division of Professional and Career Education at Bermuda College, emphasizes the program’s accessibility: “Innovative is the word—that’s synonymous with AI. By having it here at Bermuda College, we’re removing barriers. It’s open to everyone, from 18 years old and up, for anyone who wants to upgrade their skillset.”
As the island’s only institution of higher learning, the College is committed to leading Bermuda into the AI era. “It just makes sense that we should be at the forefront. And we are,” said Ms. Flood.
The Foundations course consists of five three-hour sessions and is application-based rather than lecturefocused. Students learn to master AI prompting, explore various AI applications, understand the history of AI, and delve into the ethical considerations of its use. Participants are required to complete and present a final project, ensuring hands-on, practical learning.
Ms. Flood described the enthusiasm of the students: “You learn it for three hours in class, but then you go home and spend another three hours on it.
Students say, ‘I had to tell myself to go to sleep because it’s addictive.’”
The advanced course, launching in March, will dive deeper into topics like refining prompts for precision, integrating generative AI models into workflows via APIs, and automating complex business functions using tools like Copilot.
To date, approximately 40 students from diverse professional backgrounds have completed the Foundations course. Participants have included IT experts, police officers, civil servants, lawyers, and entrepreneurs, ranging widely in age. Ms. Flood noted, “The average age of one cohort was 52, and while the latest group is younger, the majority are still middleaged professionals pursuing their own projects or businesses.”
While concerns about AI replacing jobs persist, Ms. Flood encourages Bermudians to embrace the opportunities AI offers: “The fear is valid, but that’s why we’re saying, get in on it now. In two or three years, it might be too late. Understand the opportunities it can create.”

How to pay for college
There are hundreds of scholarships available to Bermudians. Here’s how to find and apply for one
Finding funding for further education
With rising fees for many colleges and universities, the cost associated with post-secondary education is daunting for many families. However, there are literally hundreds of scholarships available to Bermuda students to be found on bermudasholarships.com. Happily, most scholarship providers today take financial need into consideration, which is all the more reason to apply online in order to be considered for awards. Whether you are studying math or art, science or dance, accounting or horticulture, scholarships are offered for every discipline.
Searching for scholarships
The bermudascholarships.com website allows you to conduct a search to find scholarships you are eligible for without even having to log in. Then once you have decided on which scholarships are of interest, you can go ahead and create
a profile by registering, after which you can log in at any time from any PC or laptop wherever you are.
Your profile

Required Documents
Essays – most award providers require an essay, which is a very important part of your application. You may be asked to write on a specific subject so be sure to research. A well-written essay is critical for your application to be considered, so make certain to have it
vetted for accuracy and content by your teacher, a friend or family member. It is unfortunate that some applications are not considered because a deserving student provides a personal statement instead of an essay on a specific topic. If you are asked to write 300 words, try to do so, and please be sure to use paragraphs – there is nothing worse than being presented with a solid block of ‘words’ to read.
Transcripts
Along with the various documents to upload, you will also be required to provide a school or college transcript. Bermuda students should request their school to upload an official transcript to their profile. This ensures confidentiality and the transcript can only be viewed by award providers who receive your application.
Overseas students should request their college to send an official transcript
directly to the bermudascholarships. com administrator for uploading to their profile.

1. Choose a Professional Username
If the interview is taking place via Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Skype, or a similar platform, ensure that your username or display name appears professional. Avoid nicknames or email addresses that may not reflect a polished image.
2. Set the Right Background
Your environment should be neat and professional. Avoid sitting in your bedroom unless you can position yourself with a neutral or professionallooking background. Many platforms now offer virtual backgrounds—if using one, choose something subtle and business-appropriate.
3. Check Your Lighting
Good lighting can make a big difference. Ideally, position yourself facing a window to get natural light on your face, but avoid sitting with bright light behind you, which can create shadows and make it difficult for the interviewer to see you clearly. If necessary, use a desk lamp to brighten your space.
4. Position Your Camera at Eye Level
8. Prepare for Pre-Recorded Interviews
Some organisations may ask for a prerecorded video where you introduce yourself and answer key questions. If so, practice in advance, and consider having a friend or mentor act as an interviewer to provide feedback on your presentation and delivery.
9. Practice, Practice, Practice
Set up a mock interview with a mentor, career counselor, or experienced
Place your laptop, tablet, or phone at eye level so that you are looking straight into the camera. This helps maintain natural eye contact and prevents awkward angles that can be distracting.
5. Minimise Distractions and Interruptions
Find a quiet location where you won’t be interrupted. Inform those around you that you’ll be in an interview and put your phone on ‘Do Not Disturb’ mode. If you’re using a laptop, close unnecessary applications and disable notifications.
6. Test Your Internet and Technology
Ensure you have a strong and stable internet connection. Test your microphone, speakers, and camera well in advance to avoid last-minute technical glitches. If possible, have a backup plan, such as a mobile hotspot, in case of connectivity issues.
7. Dress the Part
Even though you're at home, dress as if you were attending an in-person interview. A professional appearance will help you make a positive impression and put you in the right mindset.
professional. This will help you refine your responses, improve your confidence, and ensure you’re comfortable with the virtual format. By following these steps, you’ll be well-prepared to ace your video interview, whether you’re applying for a scholarship, job, or academic program. CLOSING DATE
Wednesday, 30 April 2025
You’ve just completed your scholarship interview—now what? Waiting for the final decision can be nerve-wracking, but taking proactive steps can help ease your stress and even give you a competitive edge over other applicants. Rather than simply waiting for a response, consider these strategic follow-up actions to leave a lasting impression.
Before You Leave the Interview
As the interview wraps up, politely ask about the next steps. Find out when the committee expects to make a decision and who you should follow up with. If the interview was in person, request business cards from your interviewers or take note of their contact details. If the interview was conducted virtually via Zoom or another platform, ask for
email addresses for follow-up communication.
Send a Thank-You Note
One of the simplest yet most effective things you can do is send a thankyou note. Personalise your message by referencing something specific from the conversation, such as an interesting topic discussed or a valuable piece of advice they shared. A handwritten note adds a thoughtful touch, but if that’s not feasible, an email is perfectly acceptable. If the organisation is active on LinkedIn, consider sending a polite thank-you message there as well.
Follow Up with Additional Information
If relevant, you may follow up by providing additional material that reinforces your candidacy. For instance, if you discussed a particular
WAKEFIELD QUIN
achievement or interest during the interview, you might send a brief note with a link to an article, project, or portfolio showcasing your work. However, avoid using this as a chance to “redo” your interview—don’t try to correct an answer or over-explain something you think may have been misunderstood. Keep your follow-up professional, concise, and relevant.
Stay Engaged and Positive
While You Wait
The waiting period can be
SCHOLARSHIPS
stressful, but don’t let it consume you. Continue working on other scholarship applications, focus on your studies, and explore additional opportunities. If you don’t receive the scholarship, view it as a learning experience— request feedback if possible, and apply what you’ve learned to future opportunities. By taking these simple yet meaningful steps, you demonstrate professionalism, gratitude, and enthusiasm— qualities that could make all the difference in securing your scholarship. Good luck!

Phone and Digital Etiquette for Career Success
Be mindful of how you use your phone and digital communication—there are unwritten rules in business that can make or break your professional reputation.
It’s not just how you answer questions in an interview that makes a difference. Employers, recruiters, and scholarship committees pay attention to subtle signals—such as how you communicate, your social media presence, and even your phone etiquette.
The Unspoken Rules of Phone & Digital Etiquette
1. First Impressions Matter
Don’t initiate your first contact via text or DM on social media unless specifically asked to do so. A professional email or phone call is still the best way to introduce yourself in a business setting. Once you’ve established a relationship, platforms like WhatsApp or LinkedIn messaging may become more appropriate for quick communication.
2. The Interview Starts Before You Even Speak
What you do while waiting for an interview matters. Sitting in the reception area glued to TikTok or replying to DMs can make you look distracted or unprofessional. Instead, review your notes, read company materials, or simply sit attentively— first impressions count even before you enter the interview room.
3. Your Ringtone Says a Lot About You
Always put your phone on silent or vibrate before an interview or meeting. If it rings, it’s a bad look. If your ringtone is an offensive or inappropriate song, it’s an even worse look.
4. Don’t Multitask on a Call
Whether it’s an interview or a networking call, don’t be caught driving, cooking, or, worst of all, in the office bathroom. Background noise and distractions reflect poorly on
Should I Wear My Nose Ring to the Interview?
Regardless of the industry, professionalism and attention to detail are essential in any job, scholarship, or college application process. Dressing appropriately for the situation can make a significant impact on first impressions. While workplace dress codes are becoming more relaxed, it’s still important to err on the side of caution, especially for interviews. If you have facial piercings, consider removing them for the interview and waiting until you understand the company culture before wearing them at work. Some hiring managers may look past personal style, but many still
associate a clean, polished appearance with professionalism. The same applies to visible tattoos—if you’re unsure about the company’s policy, cover them up for the interview. Your goal is to make a lasting impression based on your skills, experience, and professionalism—not your personal aesthetic.
At the end of the day, you want to be remembered for your potential, not for a distraction that could have been avoided. When in doubt, dress up a notch, keep it simple, and let your qualifications do the talking.
your professionalism. Find a quiet, dedicated space for all businessrelated conversations.
5. The Perception of Headphones and Earbuds
While wearing headphones can help minimise distractions in open workspaces, they can also make you seem unapproachable. In professional settings, use them wisely and be aware of your surroundings—looking up and making eye contact when someone approaches you is a simple way to show you’re engaged.
6. Social Media Matters
Employers and scholarship committees often check candidates' online presence. Ensure your public profiles (especially LinkedIn) are professional and reflect your achievements, skills, and aspirations. Avoid posting anything that could be seen as inappropriate, offensive, or unprofessional—what you post today could affect future opportunities.
7. Be Careful with AI Chatbots & Digital Communications
Using AI tools like ChatGPT to draft an email or LinkedIn message? That’s fine—but always review and personalise the response before sending. Generic, robotic, or overly formal messages can be off-putting. Make sure your digital communication reflects your personality and professionalism.
Phones and digital communication play a major role in how we present ourselves professionally. Developing strong etiquette will set you apart in interviews, internships, and future job opportunities.
A Fresh Perspective for 2025
As digital communication and workplace norms continue to evolve, staying adaptable and professional is key. Whether you're reaching out for an opportunity, preparing for an interview, or networking online, be intentional about the way you present yourself—both in person and digitally.
By following these simple but effective etiquette tips, you’ll stand out for all the right reasons.

Albert College
For Jordan Farias, a Grade 10 student at Albert College, a coed boarding school in Canada, finding her home at Albert has been a journey of selfgrowth and discovering new passions. Leaving Bermuda to study abroad was a unique experience, but the sense of belonging she found at Albert has made all the difference.
Living independently for the first time has been Jordan’s most significant achievement. She credits the boarding staff—affectionately known in her dorm as “house moms”— for creating a home away from home by celebrating traditions that resonate with
each student’s culture. This year, Jordan plans to bring Bermudian culture to boarding life by cooking codfish and potatoes and playing reggae, dancehall, and soca music in honour of Bermuda Day.
During her time at Albert, Jordan has embraced the school’s focus on the Five 'A's: academics, arts, athletics, active citizenship, and adventure. She discovered a passion for the arts by singing in the choir at the Conference of Independent Schools Music Festival (CISMF) in Toronto. In athletics, she excelled as the captain of the Junior Volleyball team, showcasing her leadership and dedication.

Eagle Hill School
Dante Waldron, Ontario Tech University
of Commerce (Honours) student majoring in Finance, shares his experience: “I chose Ontario Tech because I loved the campus—it’s so beautiful! All the staff were incredibly welcoming and helped so much when I arrived as an international student. That made the whole process of settling in so much easier and adapting to the community effortless.
When I came to Ontario Tech, orientation helped us figure out where all our classes were and how to find everything on campus. It really made a
difference. Living in Canada, I discovered that snow can be fun, and the people here are so kind and energetic— they’ve always been ready to help.
During my time at Ontario Tech University, I’ve found there are many student services that really help, especially when you’re still deciding which courses you want to take.”
