MY FAVOURITE SMOOTHIES

My favourite Smoothie I

’ve been on a blue-smoothie streak recently as I love the antioxidantrich and anti-inflammatory properties of Blue Majik spirulina. Pick yours up at Miles or The Cloud, or make your own at home. Try adding some DIrtea functional mushroom powder too for an extra boost. However you make yours, be sure to add a decent source of protein to steady sugar release from the fruit. That way you’ll have more, longerlasting energy.

WALKING

Walk Bermuda’s wonderland for a healthier you

S

o, you’ve taken the plunge and decided to embark on a journey of healthier living by starting a walking routine. Or maybe you’re an experienced walker. Either way, kudos to you! Walking is a fantastic exercise, and here’s the best part: you don’t need a gym membership or fancy equipment to get started. To keep you motivated and make sure this becomes a lasting habit, we’ve got some fun tips to keep your walking game strong.

goodbye to slides, slippers, and loafers, and say hello to a pair of sneakers made for walking. These shoes provide the support your feet crave while keeping your body properly aligned. Pro tip: shop for sneakers in the afternoon when your feet are at their biggest. Feet tend to swell during the day, so it’s the perfect time to ensure a comfy fit. And if your sneakers have seen better days (we’re talking more than three or four years old), consider treating yourself to a new pair.

1. The Sole of Success: Good Shoes

2. Dress for Walking Success

Let’s kick things off on the right foot – or rather, the right shoe! The most critical piece of equipment for your walking adventure is your footwear. Say

The weather in Bermuda is suitable for walking any time of year — you just have to dress appropriately. During those cooler months, layer up. On

Meet Tony Brannon: a step towards a healthier life I used to run, but now I am older I switched over more to walking. I still jog a few short stretches of my route, and every once in a while I push it to test if “I still have it”. I typically speed walk at an average of between 13 to 15 minute mile pace. I make sure my Garmin is charged to record my route. On long walks I carry water. I freeze it and by the 3rd mile I start sipping. On the few days that I don’t really feel

6

like walking I push myself out the door. After the 1st mile I always say “I am glad I didn’t surrender to “not feeling like it”. I do not wear ear pods. For me, walking is about enjoying the environment, feeling the breeze, and being in the moment. I love walking all the railway trails. I walk around Harrington Sound a lot. So, what are you waiting for. Get a great pair of HOKA walking shoes and get on the road.

WALKING

hot and humid summer days, opt for loose, lightweight clothing, and don’t forget to wear a hat and carry a water bottle. Sunscreen is your best friend, no matter when you walk. If you walk early in the morning, or prefer to enjoy evening strolls, please make sure you are visible. Wear reflective clothing as well as some LED lights. In the world of LED wearable lights, the choices are as diverse as the night sky itself. For walkers seeking visibility before sunup or after sundown, the options are practically endless. From clip-on LED shoe lights that dance with each step, to versatile LED armbands that wrap around your limbs, you can light up the night in style. Waist belts with integrated LED strips, lightweight headlamps that lead the way, and even illuminated vests that turn you into a beacon of safety are just Health & Beauty Winter 2023/24

a few more options to explore. Whether you prefer a steady glow or a pulsating pattern, there’s a LED wearable light for every nocturnal adventurer, making the darkness no match for those who love to move.

3. Rock Your Walk with Music, Podcasts, or Audiobooks

Now that you’re in the groove, why not elevate your experience with some entertainment? Download a free app on your phone and groove to your favorite tunes. Spice it up by switching genres daily or going back in time to the music of your high school days. Not a music buff? Tune in to a podcast or dive into an audiobook. Just remember to keep the volume at a safe level, so you can stay aware of your surroundings – safety first.

4. Beat Loneliness with a Walking Buddy

After the initial burst of enthusiasm, you might start feeling a tad lonely on your walks. This is where a walking buddy comes in handy. It could be your neighbor, a friend, or even your kids. If you’re walking with little ones, turn it into a game – count the dogs you see or share what you love about each passing house. For older children, use this time to connect or catch up on their day. Or join The Walking Club of Bermuda. It meets every Sunday at 7am, to walk for fitness and for the fun of it. www.walkingclubofbermuda.com.

5. Explore New Horizons

One of the best things about walking is that you can simply step outside your front door and begin your walking 7

WALKING journey. In Bermuda, we are so lucky to have so many beaches and trails to explore — especially the Railway Trail of course. Plus, there are beautiful views all around you, all the time. If you feel adventurous, why not wander through a neighborhood that you haven’t explored before. Or find a park, that you rarely visit. When you walk through Cooper’s Island Nature Reserve or Spittal Pond, for example, you’ll enjoy nature’s symphony of birds, flowers, and trees. Fresh air, nature’s beauty, and exercise combine for a winning combo!

6. Walking: The Universal Exercise

Walking is a fantastic exercise that anyone can embrace, regardless of age or fitness level. It offers physical, social, emotional, and spiritual benefits, and the best part? All you need is a trusty pair of sneakers. While it might leave you a bit tired at first, you’ll soon find it not only energising but, in some cases, downright invigorating. Strengthen your muscles, shed those extra pounds, manage your sugar levels, clear your mind, and bond with a friend – all while walking. So start planning your walks today, and watch as your life levels up on multiple fronts.

Lovette shares secrets to outdoor joy The hardest part is sometimes just throwing off the covers during cold winter mornings and getting out there. What keeps me going is the accountability of the group setting of the Walking Club of Bermuda, and the fact that I enjoy being outdoors — the fresh air, the beauty of the trees, the birds, the ocean. I believe that going for a walk is good for your mental health. My mind is clearer after a walk, and the social side of chatting to members of our walking club. My favorite routes involve the Ferry Reach trail, Coopers Island, Abbott’s Cliff and exploring many of the nature reserves that are not visited often, such as Vesey Nature Reserve and Hog Bay park. My best walking tips are firstly to find a person or group of people you enjoy walking with. Then choose a location you’ve wanted to see but have never checked out before. Look around you when you walk —appreciate the sounds of the birds, the blue of the water, the green of the trees. And finally, join the Walking Club of Bermuda. Visit www.walkingclubofbermuda.com for starting locations.

Wendell’s Journey of Fitness, Discovery, and Resilience Through Walking “Walking has impacted my life in so many positive ways. A major improvement in my overall heath and fitness is the most obvious — I have lost more than 20 unwanted pounds. I have lowered my heart rate and I have my blood pressure under control without taking medication. I have discovered so much more about Bermuda that I would have never learned if I had not walked, and I have made so many new friends through walking. It has also given me so many opportunities to take great photographs. My favorite routes are Bailey’s Bay Railway Trail, Warwick beaches and back trails, Southampton and Somerset Railway Trail. When I travel, I always walk. In New York, it’s the Central Park circular 6 mile training route. In London I walk around Hyde Park, as well as the North and South Embankment walks along the River Thames. I love walking the English Country side — Dartmoor and the Southern Coastal Path. At the end of 2022, I taught myself the “Race Walking Style”. My first race was the International 10K last January, during Race Weekend. I loved it so much I continued to race walk. I have now done more than 20 races and enjoyed everyone of them. I tend to have a schedule that I am following, particularly 8

when I am training for an upcoming race. I know that if I don’t follow it I will not meet my fitness goals or be prepared for that race. When not racing, or training for racing, I always carry my iPhone and take at least 20 photographs on every walk It was a disability that motivated me to take up walking as both a sport and a past time. In December 2009 I was involved in a very serious motor cycle accident that I was very lucky to survive. I was left with a totally paralysed left arm. That was the end of my involvement in the three sports in which I was participating — golf, cycling and swimming. After a series of major surgeries and significant therapy, I recovered about 30% of the use of my left arm, but still, I could not do my usual sports. As a young boy, I used to walk a couple of miles each way back and forth to school and have loved walking ever since those days. During the Covid shut down I adopted serious walking as my daily exercise regimen and that was the start of me adopting walking as a major part of my life. I retired in March and that has only given me more opportunities to enjoy my passion for walking. If you don’t walk at the moment, I would encourage you to take it up and start one step at a time, one foot after the other. Go out every day and as you feel fitter and better, increase the length of your walk and then the speed. Health & Beauty Winter 2023/24

CHOOSE WATER

Choose Water

S

ugar is a carbohydrate and occurs naturally in fruits, vegetables, and dairy products. Too many carbohydrates can lead to weight gain mainly due to extra calories in the diet. Sodas and other beverages are some of the main culprits of “added sugar”. There are profound health implications related to excess body fat. Being overweight increases your risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Drinking water is a healthier

alternative to sodas. It allows you to hydrate without the sugars. Fruits like limes and lemons can be added to enhance the flavour. Sparkling water is a great option if you miss the carbonation of sodas. Always read the labels on the water you purchase since all waters are not created equal. There is a time to indulge in the sweeter side of life. However, balance things out with a glass of water. It does a body good, pure and simple. www.bwl.bm

DRINK MORE WATER. Drinking up to eight glasses of water a day will help you get clearer skin, feel more energized, lose weight and keep you hydrated. Start by simply bringing a refillable bottle to keep at work and opt for water when dining out.

CANCER SCREENING AND TREATMENT

Breast Cancer Pathway Educates, Screens and Treats T he Breast Cancer Pathway provides a smooth journey from prevention to screening and, if necessary, diagnosis and possibly treatment and follow-up care. Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre begins the pathway with its cancer prevention and early detection programme, Know Your Lemons. Although breast cancer is prevalent— one in every eight women can expect to receive a cancer diagnosis in her lifetime—it has a very high survival rate when detected and treated in its earliest stages. When women conduct their monthly breast examinations, as recommended by cancer screening guidelines from the age of 20, they need to know what to look for and when to speak to a doctor. Using a comprehensive marketing campaign and direct presentations to organisations, Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre aids women to understand how to properly examine their breasts and identify twelve symptoms that could indicate breast cancer. Screening is the next stop on the pathway. Cancer screening guidelines recommend annual mammograms for women over 40. In addition to educating Health & Beauty Winter 2023/24

people about the importance of regular screenings and early detection, Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre provides the gold star in early breast cancer detection — mammograms to show abnormal areas in the breast. If a mammogram detects any unusual areas, Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre provides further diagnostic imaging with additional mammogram images or breast ultrasound that uses high-frequency sound waves to create an accurate image. If a suspicious area is detected, Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre will conduct a breast biopsy to remove and examine a sample of the tissue in question. A breast biopsy is the only way to confirm a cancer diagnosis. Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre works closely with patients’ general practitioners to ensure every step along the pathway is as smooth, seamless and timely as possible. The Centre hosts a weekly multi-disciplinary team (MDT) team review of breast cancer cases, where the Centre’s radiologist and oncologists meet with surgeons, pathologists, cancer navigators and other medical professionals to look at each individuals diagnosis and to

determine the best treatment path for the individual based on the type of breast cancer they have, and the staging. Even when the Centre does not directly offer services, such as surgery, the team acts as a cancer navigator to assist physicians and patients along the pathway. If radiation therapy is recommended for a patient, Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre’s radiation therapy unit provides world-class treatment in alliance with Dana-Farber Brigham Cancer Center. This alliance means that the Centre uses the same treatment systems, software, radiation therapy protocols and quality assurance programmes as one of the world’s best cancer centres while maintaining their routines and support systems in Bermuda. Thanks to community generosity, donations to the Equal Access Fund help to subsidise the costs of the Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre’s clinical services. No matter the insurance coverage, cancer care is affordable for all. To learn more about the Breast Cancer Pathway or schedule a Know Your Lemons presentation for your organisation, please visit chc.bm. 11

HEALTH

Fall into healthy habits

Tips to boost wellness

S

cientific research shows how both our physical health and mental health are affected by the decrease in temperatures and an increase in time spent indoors during the fall months. However, having a clear understanding of what to expect and preparedness will keep you in tip-top shape for fall and beyond.

Maintain Adequate Vitamin D Levels During the summer, most people get their daily recommended dose of Vitamin D from sun exposure by spending about 10-15 minutes per day outdoors. But, with the sun out for fewer hours and beach days a thing of the past, fulfilling Vitamin D requirements during the fall is a bit tricky. Research links low levels of Vitamin D to everything from increased colon cancer risk to anxiety. Though it’s best to get nutrients from foods, obtaining adequate Vitamin D from diet alone is not easy. Foods such as fatty fishes (salmon, lake trout and albacore tuna), egg yolks, fortified cereals and cheese are all Vitamin D rich. But, specific populations, including pregnant women and vegans, may want to consider a Vitamin D supplement. As, while the daily recommendation is 400-800 IU, some people need upwards of 1,000-4,000

IU per day to keep their levels in the adequate range. Consult your doctor to determine what’s best for you.

Get Enough Sleep

Contrary to popular belief, spending a few extra hours cuddled under the duvet isn’t necessarily helping you. Keeping a consistent sleep schedule is perhaps the most essential piece of sleep hygiene. As the sun rises later in the fall and

winter months, access to blue light is less significant and interferes with our circadian rhythm. This hindrance throws off our body’s internal awareness of the times to be tired versus alert. It’s essential to maintain consistent bed and rise times daily to combat your body’s craving for extra sleep. Perhaps the one thing working in favour of a peaceful slumber is the refreshing drop in temperature fall brings. Sleep studies show the best sleep patterns occur in a cool environment, especially for those who experience night sweats. Logging the recommended seven to eight hours of restful, restorative sleep each night is vital. If you struggle to maintain a healthy sleep routine by finding it difficult to fall asleep or sustain a restful night’s sleep, consider supplementing your diet with CBD Hemp Oil products. You can find many CBD options in dispensaries at The Phoenix Stores in capsule, liquid and gummy forms.

Stay Hydrated

Your body depends on water to survive and its overall good health. Every cell, tissue, and organ in your body needs water to work effectively. For example, 12

Health & Beauty Winter 2023/24

HEALTH will be most widespread each season. Hence the need for a new vaccine each year. 2. Wash your hands often. Good health habits like washing your hands with soap and water or alcohol-based rubs can help stop the spread of germs and prevent respiratory illnesses like the flu. 3. Avoid close contact with people who are sick. And, avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth to prevent the spread of germs through touch contamination.

Get Exercise

The cooler temperatures are a reprieve from the sweltering summer presented as a gift before the cold winter. Fall is a perfect season to get outside and enjoy a run, walk or bike ride while increasing Vitamin D levels to make you happier and improve your concentration. If you require a less intense workout routine, consider 30 minutes in the garden or playing outdoors with your kids to burn an easy 150 calories.

Maintain Good Nutrition

your body uses water to maintain its temperature, remove waste and lubricate your joints. Most people understand drinking six to eight, eight-ounce glasses of water each day is a reasonable goal. However, not everybody is the same and as such people require different amounts of water to stay hydrated. As a rule, if your urine is usually colourless or light yellow, you are likely well hydrated. And, if your urine is a dark yellow or amber colour, you may be dehydrated. Signs of dehydration also include dry skin, headaches, dizziness and lack of energy. It may seem counterintuitive, but folks are more likely to be dehydrated during the cooler months than in the warmer months as our thirst response diminishes during this time. Your body isn’t so quick to remind you to drink water. Though water is best for staying hydrated, other drinks and foods can help you stay hydrated too. However, some may add extra calories from sugar to your diet. Fruit and vegetable juices, milk, and herbal teas add to the amount of water you get each day. You can also find water in fruits and vegetables like watermelon, tomatoes, lettuce and soup broths. Sports drinks are good hydration Health & Beauty Winter 2023/24

options for those planning to exercise more aggressively than usual. The carbohydrates and electrolytes in sports drinks can help your body absorb water. But, be wary of those sports drinks which are high in calories from sugar and may contain high levels of sodium (salt). If you find it difficult to drink plain water to stay hydrated, try adding one of the exciting flavours of Nuun to your water. Nuun effervescent tablets are tasty and loaded with electrolytes to keep you healthy and hydrated.

Prevent The Flu

The flu can be severe, even deadly if you have a health condition like asthma, heart disease or a weakened immune system. Though the trick is to not get sick in the first place, here are a few proven ways to avoid the flu: 1. Get vaccinated. The single best way to prevent seasonal flu is to get a flu shot each year, ideally early fall. The flu vaccine is designed to protect against those flu strains health experts believe

Embrace seasonal superfoods. Pumpkins are good for more than just carving; they’re jam-packed with immuneboosting Vitamin A and are weight loss friendly. Plus, these low calorie, low carbohydrate gourds can be roasted, mashed, turned into a soup and used in baking. Loads of other autumn veggies can also add a healthy bump to your diet, like fibre-filled beets, Vitamin C-packed brussels sprouts, and potassium-rich sweet potatoes. Hit up the farmer’s markets to discover which produce is in season and fresh – they’ll all be useful for you. Be sure to get an adequate supply of essential vitamins and minerals, preferably from your diet. If you need to supplement, ask your pharmacist about the good, reputable brands available in-store. One way to help keep you and your family healthy is by stocking up on healthy essentials including Vitamin C, L-lysine, zinc and immune-supporting herbs like echinacea. For a full range of supplements, hydration and CBD products, pop by The Phoenix Stores to chat with your pharmacist who is happy to make recommendations on your specific needs. 13

CANCER

Improving the quality of life for cancer patients

F

orty years ago, cancer was a word hardly spoken aloud in the community. Patients were isolated for fear of contamination, and families were even afraid to use the same utensils. PALS began with a group of volunteer nurses to assist in getting patients home from the hospital with cancer. These patients needed a “pal,” someone to sit with them, read to them, or perhaps feed them. Robert Stigwood, a wellknown music entrepreneur, film producer, and a Bermuda resident, provided funding for two years for a part-time nurse. Today, Bermuda’s only home cancer care charity has grown to include six specialised nurses, a palliative care physician, and a medical social worker who all see approximately 200 patients a month. PALS supports all patients with cancer at any stage

of the disease. Some of its patients complete their cancer treatment and no longer require its specialised services; others require palliative care for pain and symptoms experienced with end-of-

life care. PALS continues to support the patient and his or her family medically, emotionally, and financially. In addition to nursing support, PALS offers durable medical equipment to its

patients, including such items as hospital beds, commodes, shower benches, and wheelchairs, all free of charge. PALS will assist patients (on an individual basis once financially screened) that require assistance with purchasing food supplements, medications, and overseas medical travel for uninsured and underinsured patients. PALS receives no government grants and relies solely on corporate and individual donations, various fundraising events and its thrift shop, to continue to support its programmes. PALS spends more than $6,000 a day on patient care, and its annual budget is slightly over $2 million. PALS never charges a patient or his or her family for its services. All support financially and through volunteering is greatly appreciated. www.pals.bm

SKIN CARE

The importance of good quality skin care

T

here are so many products available, navigating through them all can be confusing and exhausting. ‘Green’ skincare is on the rise, and consumers are becoming more aware of what’s in their products and the carbon footprint they leave behind. The Retreat uses Osea, and for the spa, along with many of its clients, Osea ticks all the boxes when it comes to green skincare. The skin is the largest organ of the body, making it so important to follow a good skincare routine, using good quality products without any toxic nasties that can be absorbed by the skin. For anyone new to facials and skincare, the experts at The Retreat always suggest baby steps so as not to overwhelm its clients. These steps generally include a cleanser, toner, moisturiser and good SPF. A consistent skincare routine can improve tone, texture and clarity of the skin. The Retreat tells its clients that post facial, they should expect to leave with that Osea ‘glow’. The Retreat offers a wide range of facials and its amazing team of therapists will be happy to guide you on the best treatments and products for your skin type. After all, you only have one skin so it pays to invest in it.

INDOOR AIR QUALITY

Clearing the Air The impact of indoor air quality on you health and beauty

W

hen it comes to health and beauty, air quality is as important a consideration as diet, exercise and personal care. According to research published in the Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology, outdoor and indoor air pollution may cause inflammation and lower levels of antioxidant in skin1. Oxidation resulting from poor air quality can damage DNA and cause the breakdown of collagen leading to premature aging and potentially an increased risk of skin cancer. Additionally, indoor air can contain viruses, bacteria, mould, allergens and other pollutants that linger and can contribute to headaches, lung irritation and fatigue and long-term conditions such as asthma, allergies and infectious diseases. The Environmental Protection

Agency has reported that indoor air pollution concentrations are often 2 to 5 times higher than typical outdoor concentrations2. While outdoor air quality cannot be controlled, other than avoiding areas of pollution, indoor air quality can be. AIRCARE offers a range of proven, effective air purification products from RGF Environmental Group, Inc. (RGF) and air quality services to significantly reduce the harmful pollutants in your home and workspace thereby helping ensure better health. RGF has, for many years, been at the forefront of air, food and water purification with its technology being used by major corporations and entities around the globe. RGF’s proprietary Photohydroionisation (PHI®) technology recreates nature’s process of producing hydro-peroxide plasma that is distributed throughout a space to actively purify pollutants at their source both in the

air and on surfaces. Hydro-peroxides are naturally occurring oxidisers that are created in our atmosphere with the combination of oxygen molecules, water vapour and electromagnetic energy. Ionised hydro-peroxides effectively destroy harmful microbes in the air and on surfaces by cell lysis, which is a process that changes the microbes’ molecular structure, rendering them harmless, and occurs constantly in outdoor air. RGF’s PHI technology allows this natural process to happen within airconditioned spaces safely. Lab tests have shown the RGF products to be effective against Coronaviruses such as Covid-19 as well as H1N1 Swine Flu, Bird Flu, Norwalk Virus, MRSA, Listeria, E-Coli and many others. Air quality is also improved with up to 98% reduction of moulds and viruses, and significant reduction of gas compounds and odours. AIRCARE’s indoor air quality experts can help ensure safe, clean air for your home, tenants and employees. For a consultation call 292 7342, email info@aircare.bm or visit www.aircare.bm.
