our grocery shopping cart is an easy place to start going green! News of global climate change abounds and may seem overwhelming. However, each one of us can take tiny steps to effect big change, such as changing the way we shop at the grocery store. Avoid shrink wrapped fruit and vegetables; nature creates bananas and coconuts with their own sustainable peels or husks, so these don’t need to be shrink wrapped. Select loose items and place them in your own reusable mesh or cloth bags. At the deli counter or pre-made food bar, bring your own store-approved containers. Reduce the number of trips you take to the store and packages you buy by choosing bulk dry items like fruit, cereal, pastas, and spices. Decant these down into lunch-box size portions for school and work lunches. The same can be done with yogurts. Skip the sugary pre-packaged fruit cups and go for bulk frozen fruit.

Drinking up to eight glasses of water a day will help you get clearer skin, feel more energized, lose weight and keep you well hydrated. Start by simply bringing a reﬁllable bottle to keep at work and opt for water when dining out.

Avoid single serving juice sacks and boxes, these are expensive, and many contain unneeded sugars and colouring and become litter on school grounds. Home Air Conditioning Maintenance

he benefits of regular maintenance on any machine are well known however there are a wide variety of types and quality. For domestic mini split air-conditioning, the most basic level is washing filters and cleaning drains; however mini split filters cannot block particles less than 40-50 microns. Mold spores, fine dust and other airborne contaminants can infiltrate the internal components, resulting in an odorous, respiratory-irritating coating that gets distributed around the room. This can be particularly detrimental for those occupants who suffer from respiratory diseases such as asthma. Also, in April 2021 the CDC (Center for Disease Control) acknowledged that COVID-19 is primarily communicated through airborne transmission and not surface transmission. Therefore indoor room air quality can be directly related to the cleanliness of parts not easily seen by users. better. However with increased grade comes a detrimental effect on system efficiency — the system must work harder to move the same amount of air. A cost-effective solution is anti-bacterial filters, they come in a variety of options, and are smaller and generally saturated in a particular substance which reacts with airborne pollutants at a molecular level. There is an Activated Carbon option which is well known for deodorising and absorbing unpleasant smells. Catechin, a natural extract from green tea effectively eliminates 95% of carcinogenic agents. Bringing calm and order A A renovation that reﬂects a story shaped by the ideas and direction of the process

dynamic young family needed to find efficient and functional solutions to manage their busy lives with two youngsters. Creating an open plan view for the enjoyment of the living spaces was paramount. The original kitchen in this cottage was enclosed and had two dividing walls removed, opening it up to the living and dining areas. As the existing cabinets were in perfect shape it

was decided to upcycle them with fresh paint and add on what was needed once the walls were eliminated. The kitchen island was newly built to tie in and offered the storage and practicality needed for the cooktop and counter eating area, stylishly lit with modern gold lined pendants for accent. New light pine tile flooring was added to bring an undertone of warmth yet keeping the space light and airy. The kitchen flows out to a spacious outdoor patio so the large slider window was added over the sink to allow social access to the outdoor activities. For this young family on the go, the crisp and clean lines throughout this kitchen design bring visual calm and order, to the hectic pace of daily life.

Easy Entertaining This Southampton home has been signiﬁcantly remodelled for modern senior living

hen you walk into the newly renovated kitchen of this property, originally designed by Wil Onions in 1947, you are immediately drawn to a spectacular view over Morgan’s Point to Dockyard. The kitchen and bathrooms of this three-bedroom family home, which is full of a lifetime of memories and whose owner loves to throw a party, have all been modernised and made more accommodating for senior living. Only the layout of the kitchen’s central area has remained the same, taking advantage of both the view and ease of flow to the outdoor balcony and the indoor dining room. At the heart is a huge island centred behind a large semi-circular counter space, so the owner can enjoy the sight of the ocean whether baking, chopping or washing up at the kitchen sink. The cabinets, however were gutted and the whole aesthetic changed. The wall space has also been transformed, creating extra, out of the way, storage areas. “There used to be a door where the oven is that led into the master bedroom so there wasn’t a lot of wall space,”

explains Dawn Dunstan, Senior Interior Designer at L&S Design Ltd. “We brought everything that was tall to here.” Now, where there was previously only a fridge and small pantry space, there are double ovens, a built-in fridge, extra counter space, a drawer microwave and pantry cupboards at either end.

There is storage on the outside of the tall counter for items that need to go out to the balcony or into the dining room. This counter also doubles up as a place to gather, or a useful buffet spot. The owner loves all things nautical and this has inspired the new colours and textures. A walnut counter top on the

island matches the cedar beams above and the re-stained floors below. The deep navy cabinets in the island also contrast with the light countertops and cabinets throughout the rest of the kitchen. Hidden LED lighting on top of the beams creates softer light and the white herringbone patterned backsplash is an unusual play on subway tile. The nautical feel continues into the

master and guest bathrooms with both rooms gutted and now replaced with double vanities, new floors and walk in showers. Where it was previously dated and cluttered, the master bathroom is now light, bright and spacious. Pocket doors, solar tubes, a built in closet, and light blue and grey colours enhance this. looking out over the South Shore. The porcelain tile for the flooring has been cut into strips in the shower area for extra grip as it slopes down towards a removeable infinity drain. A particularly useful feature of this new bathroom is the ‘pass through’ hole directly into the laundry, so there is no need for the owner to lug hampers around the house. The ‘pass through’ is cleverly covered by a piece of artwork on hinges. A former office off the kitchen has been turned into a bar area, at the end of which is a new powder room, which includes the relocated laundry area, stylishly hidden behind closet doors, which also have light sensors. The powder room is now the main bathroom for guests. Like the other bathrooms, it is light and bright, but also interesting, with Mediterranean inspired encaustic cementlook porcelain floor tiles and textured digital art tiles on the back wall, which give the illusion of a linen wall covering. All the important parts of the house are now on one level, spacious, easy to use, attractive to look at, incorporate the view and the owners love of sailing, and provide the perfect layout for a great party.

Marble Marvel

A classic and timeless bathroom upgrade

ye4design took a bathroom that was once dominated by a bathtub and turned it into space that is highlighted by one. “The tub was installed purely as an art piece” says interior designer, Janice Burke. “It has a beautiful matte finish and it is deep.” The original was a built-in jet-tub that traversed the back wall of the room, which also included a toilet, bidet and small shower room. The space now is bright, open and sleek, just as the owners had hoped. “The homeowners were very much involved with the style of the room after we had discussed the options in depth,” says Ms. Burke. “They procured the vanity, the tub and all the fixtures and we pulled the look together.” Pulling the look together meant a complete “gut job”. “We chose a large faux marble tile that really looks like one big slab on the floor and in the shower enclosure,” she describes. “The homeowners chose matte black fixtures throughout the room, which HouseGardenKitchen&Bath 2022

really pop against the white and grey.” With the floor and shower tiles installed the next step was for eye4design to install wainscoting around the entire room and make new cabinets on the sides of the large mirror. Ms. Burke says her team are particularly happy with the white panel wainscoting and describes it as “classic and timeless.” To bring light into the room recessed LED lights were installed, while the large window lets in an abundance of

natural light. The vanity mirror also has LED light strips on the sides for further illumination. Somewhat like the bathtub, the most distinctive lighting feature in the bathroom is “really there to look pretty.” “We found the perfect chandelier from ESC. I couldn’t believe we found this beautiful art piece locally, just as we needed it. It is made up of clear white beads on a matte black frame,” describes Ms. Burke. The project, which took about five weeks to complete, has resulted in a stylish, clean and distinctive room, highlighted by an inviting freestanding tub.

Traditional Cottage Modernised Subdued hues that blend into the rocky ocean view was the priority for this legacy family home renovation

ore modern, practical living spaces were created in this twobedroom cottage overlooking the south shore in Southampton. “The family were keen to establish a more open concept living environment and to ensure that the south shore views were given the prominence they deserved,” explains Shelley Ray, Principal at L&S Design Ltd. As is typical in old Bermudian cottages, the rooms were small and separated so, continues Ms. Ray, “we blew out interior walls between the kitchen and living areas and expanded the kitchen.” The result is not just more space but also a spectacular view throughout that side of the house.

“The kitchen is on the north side, but by removing the walls between the kitchen and living room, and installing a large bifolding glass door system, the views from the kitchen run right through the living and dining areas out to the south shore,” she says. The kitchen is compact, but looks light and spacious. “We opened up the ceiling to a full height tray and we added two corner walls of windows,” she says, adding that the owners love to cook so it “has everything that someone who loves their culinary world would enjoy. Steam oven, induction cook top, built-in refrigerator and freezers, under counter wine fridge, and we carved out a little pantry so the

bulk of the larger cooking equipment and appliances are in there keeping the rest of the kitchen clutter free.” The island also has seating on three sides, making it ideal for conversation and the two high-gloss pendant lights above create both task and ambient lighting. Colours and finishes had to be complementary to the view and also practical so they could withstand the high salt content in the air. To this end the kitchen has natural stone flooring and stone tile finishes. The countertop is a grey stone with taupe and blue grey colours which, explains Ms. Ray, “really connects with the grey, rocky cliffs within the view.” The stormy subdued colours also continue into the bathrooms. “We did colour shifts between the different paints so the colours all connect nicely together but we didn’t over utilise one particular colour.” The interior doors are blue green and the cabinets in the bathrooms and the kitchen are a blue grey colour. The light fixtures also follow this colour scheme either by having natural materials such as raffia or wicker, or by having a “nautical nod” such as one which is a “green, seeded

glass” reminiscent of sea glass. Unusually, there is a window instead of a mirror above the double vanity in the master bathroom as it also enjoys the same south shore view. There are however, recessed medicine cabinets to the side of the sinks, with mirrors on both sides of the doors so when open, you can see

yourself, but when closed, the owners can enjoy the ocean. To maximise the bathroom’s view, the wall tile in the wet area matches the stone floor tile, drawing the eye instead to the dramatic blue of the vanity, the exuberant stone countertops and then up to the window. “I wanted the focus of colour and

texture on the southern side,” Ms. Ray explains. There is also additional storage in the form of drawers at the base of the vanities, beneath the sink cabinets. “I’ve been studying the design of small home living and trying to apply it to traditional Bermudian homes which can be inefficient with storage requirements,” she continues. Elsewhere around the home, Ms. Ray relocated a laundry into the cottage from an outer building by creating an attractive “laundry hallway” en route to the new powder room. While the cottage has been modernised, it still maintains its traditional character along with the connection to the family’s memories, an achievement Ms. Ray is particularly pleased with.

A soothing space to escape

aking a relatively small space and turning it into a “serene, spa-like” master bathroom was the goal for this newly renovated bathroom by Hamma Galleries. “The client wanted a space where the

stress of the day could be washed away,” says interior designer, Catherine Stewart. To achieve the desired serenity, clutter is hidden away and the textures of both the furnishings and tiles are inviting and soothing.

Welcoming you into the bathroom is a one-of-a-kind chest and a carefully selected piece of art. “The chest adds natural warmth and interest with the radial design cast in a resin,” says Ms. Stewart, “and the artwork was an important piece to add elegance.” Smooth, warm grey tiles line the floor and back wall while the linear, ridged tiles on either side, and in the shower stall, elongate the room. “The texture tile soothing warm grey colour softens against the wood tones and adds a nice background to other design elements in the space,” says Ms. Stewart. The custom vanity brings a “sense of warmth with clean modern lines.” Its tall column creates a visual barrier with the shower and provides hidden storage, while a granite waterfall edge counter is sleek and elegant and the open shelf provides a home for towels. “I love the balance of the vanity’s function and form,” says Ms. Stewart. Several design features combine to bring light into the bathroom. There are overhead pot lights, and LED mirror lights add “task lighting that is both flattering and useful.” Surrounding the mirror are crackled glass, mosaic, subway-style tiles, which pick up the light from the mirror and add a bit of colour and sparkle. The distinctive tiles are laid vertically emphasising the 9’ ceilings and sense of space in the room.

For Family and Entertaining A kitchen that converts seamlessly from a practical family space to a room perfect for entertaining

his large kitchen and dining room has a very unusual and unique custom feature designed especially for the family by Hamma Galleries senior interior designer Jennifer Dearing. “The island table is used on a day-to-day basis by the family for casual eating” explains Ms. Dearing “and when company comes over, it can be lowered and joined to the dining table to make one long, huge table. They match up perfectly together and you have seating for up to 20 people.” “The client was very keen on having simple, shaker white cabinets. They loved the brass hardware details, and we carried the brass theme over to the pendant light and the sconces over the sink,” continued Ms. Dearing. The floor is a wood-look tile, and the custom-built tabletops were created with walnut to highlight some of the darker colours in the flooring. “In addition to what you might call HouseGardenKitchen&Bath 2022

the regular food preparation and cooking area, we also created a separate space that we call the baking area and coffee servery,” pointed out Ms. Dearing. “This is home to baking tools, coffee maker and other small appliances, all of which can

be hidden away when not in use behind bi-fold doors, keeping the kitchen looking neat and tidy”. There is also a bar area at the other end of the room that stores glasses, wine and other drinks. This space was created by opening up two smaller rooms, and with more than 27 feet of new windows brought right down to counter level, plus a French door, the family now enjoys panoramic views of Mullett Bay, St. George’s from this amazing kitchen and dining room.

Open, Modern Character House

A traditional Bermuda home in Tuckers Town is transformed into a contemporary living space with unique character

o meet the needs of a new owner, what was a conventional property has been stripped back, opened up, customised and modernised. The outdoor living space of this two-bedroom home with a separate one-bedroom cottage has also been expanded to take full advantage of the hilltop location and substantial ocean views. Originally built in the early 1900s, this former three-bedroom home was redesigned by Benevides and Associates’

principal, David Benevides who reorganised the bedroom wing into two bedrooms, with ensuite bathrooms and enviable closet space. He opened out the kitchen, dining and living areas as well as connecting the separate one-bedroom cottage, which now also houses an impressive gym, to the main house via a breezeway. A covered porch was significantly extended and can now be directly accessed from the kitchen, entrance foyer

and master bedroom. The porch also leads seamlessly down to the swimming pool and allows the owners to enjoy their south shore views, whatever the weather. “The whole place was completely renovated,” explains Mr. Benevides. “It was torn back to the Bermuda stone walls and then refinished.” “It was a strong Bermudian style for the house and it was a continuation of that style,” he adds. “We extended the porch on either side to make more connections to the kitchen and master bedroom so you walked out from those rooms onto covered porches.” The addition of retractable screens allows the owners to enjoy it year-round. “This has been a huge plus,” he adds. The owners’ priority was a house with living space all on one level that had easy and accessible rooms. “The layout was a foyer, traditional dining room at the front, study at the rear and large living room on the other side. You went through the dining room to get to a butlers’ pantry and then through the kitchen. We opened all of that up to a more open plan”. What used to be a pantry and storage room has now been incorporated into a large kitchen which looks onto the family room and dining area, and antique ipe wooden flooring has been extended throughout the house. INTERIORS The area to the other side of the kitchen has been renovated into a large laundry room, separate office and powder room. The downside of opening up a traditional Bermudian home is the loss of storage areas, so to solve this problem, they dug out underneath the house and created dry, climate-controlled storage rooms. These are accessed via an internal staircase which also leads to the garage and other utility areas. While the house maintains a traditional aesthetic it is full of quirky features, striking colour schemes and unusual designs that give it a unique character. “It’s the complete opposite to a white box,” says Mr. Benevides. Particularly fun or interesting details include pink-style mirrored fronts with nickel accents in one of the bathrooms, a porthole-style window in one of the powder rooms and unique antique light fixtures throughout the home, which were sourced by the owner from 1stDibs, an online luxury marketplace for antiques. In the kitchen there is a striking dark blue coloured island with a teak countertop, which, when combined with the tall-ship pictures on the backsplash tiles, brass fixtures and grooved boarding in the ceiling, gives the room a distinctly nautical feel. The striking use of colour continues around the outside of the house with the bright turquoise shutters. The existing kite-shaped swimming pool – another unique character feature of the house – and deck area was also renovated and matching planters and subtle landscaping help it blend into the surroundings. The owners bought the house, says Mr. Benevides, because it has a “great location with great views. Most of the previous rooms captured that, it just needed to be brought up to the way people live today.” He is pleased at how “comfortable” all the rooms are and enjoys the way the internal flow connects with the exterior. The house, he says, has “a lot of great moments”.

A kitchen for today A small condo kitchen gets a complete make-over

n completely overhauling this kitchen, eye4design has bought more natural light, colour and even a dishwasher into the now up-to-date space. “This was a full gut job within the limits of the existing space,” says interior designer, Janice Burke. “The original kitchen dated back at least 40 years and the 1970s olive green tile floor was never level”. The project was much more than a cosmetic makeover, requiring new plumbing, updated electrical systems and the reinforcement of a dividing wall. “We also removed a dropped ceiling and faux bulk heads, installed LED lighting and new energy efficient appliances,” she continues. “We convinced the owner to have a dishwasher, but just an 18” one, because the client likes to wash dishes!” Now, the 10’ by 10’ kitchen enjoys glorious views of Hamilton Harbour through two 36” by 42” custom built windows. “We were able to move the sink to the corner of the kitchen to access the views,” says Ms. Burke. She is also particularly happy with the custombuilt wooden shelves nearby that add a little warmth to the space and allow the owners to display some of their personal

collectibles. “The owners chose not to open up the kitchen to the dining room as they prefer to have separate rooms. We did, however,

upgrade a little laundry room that was set off from the kitchen by opening up the doorway.” The stackable washer/dryer was

KITCHENS changed to side-by-side machines and a narrow cupboard was added, which eye4design custom built. Style-wise, dark grey with blue undertones was the colour chosen for the cabinets with a Carrera marble look for the countertops. The new appliances are all stainless, adding to the modernity of the new space. “The backsplash is a fun splash of colour that ties it all together and gives the pop that the homeowners wanted,” says Ms. Burke. “We chose a vinyl wood look plank for the flooring. I quite often recommend this product because it is softer on the feet than tile, particularly when so much time is spent in the kitchen.” Ms. Burke says the end result meets the needs of her clients, who are a mature couple who like to do some entertaining but were really looking for a clean, modern space in which to prepare simple meals at home.

Beach Cottage Style on the Harbour An easy-going, coastal life design for a young, growing family

hen your home has gorgeous views of Hamilton Harbour, you want to ensure you take advantage. A young couple employed Liz James-Edwards, designer at Hasco Home to give their kitchen a ‘beach cottage chic’ ambiance from which to enjoy the panoramic views, and to make it functional as their family grows. Liz says, “The beach cottage style brings together cozy and casual elements to reflect an easy-going way of coastal life. In a beach-inspired space, whites,

neutrals, and pastels create the canvas for accents of bold colours, such as blue, corals, or golds.” A wall was removed to incorporate a second room to expand the kitchen creating an L-shape space, where the young ones can play while the adults cook and entertain. The gleaming white cabinets are finished with Richelieu champagne bronze hardware. There are also custommade floating shelves made of pitch pine. The Cambria quartz ‘Weybourne’

countertops reflect the coastal aura. The backsplash in Soho white brick helps pull it all together. The island is from Conestoga who partner with Sherwin Williams for the finish. Lantern pendants above and Ballard Designs’ stools complete the island. Wood look tiles are used for the flooring. The master bathroom was an addition to the house, so it could be purposebuilt to the owners wishes. It is, says Ms. James-Edwards, “fun, whimsical and fresh.” Large tiles are used throughout and the shower walls are in a soothing aqua colour, “capturing the aqua from the ocean” says Ms. James-Edwards. “The floor tile, which has a sand colour, adds to the coastal beach aura.” The oval American Standard tub is placed under a window, allowing the owners to look out over the harbour as they relax in comfort. Also playing a significant role in the design of this home was ByDesign. It provided the layout for the bathroom and closet and did the initial work on the kitchen.

Lifestyle redesign A much-beloved family home is transformed for a new generation

he owner, who grew up in this home, wanted to honour his father by breathing new life into the property for his children. While the whole house is showroom-worthy, three areas of particular interest are the kitchen and two bathrooms. Liz James-Edwards, kitchen and bath designer for Hasco Home says the kitchen was opened up to be the centre of three rooms, “so you can keep conversations going,” no matter which room people are using. The kitchen stands out with navy

blue cabinets offset with a beautiful hazelnut wood back splash by Stikwood. Richelieu brushed stainless steel hardware completes the look for the cabinets. The sizeable L-shaped island seats six, and is a great place to sit, eat and enjoy conversations. It also provides copious storage space under the countertop and is home to the kitchen sink and cooktop. Tying the three rooms together is stone plank flooring. Ms. James-Edwards says, “It goes down like a vinyl floor, but it is a hybrid tile. It is 75% limestone with 25% PVC, and looks absolutely gorgeous.”

Sparkling touches were also applied to bathrooms. The master bathroom has a big-screen TV and a panoramic view of Bermuda. Ms. James-Edwards says “with this tv and the view of the harbour, you may never want to get out of the tub.” She described the room as a “blend of both traditional and contemporary design styles. The tile is laid in a modern twist on a traditional medallion floor style. In the shower the drain is invisibly cut into the wall —“very cool” exclaims Ms. JamesEdwards. The guest bathroom was designed for the daughter who wanted a Soho feel. “It was inspired by the lofty factories of the late 19th and early 20th centuries,” Ms. James-Edwards explains. “It’s a design aesthetic that considers function first, then form — very industrial and sparse.”

Making new memories

The rebirth of a kitchen for a family that had a lifetime of memories in the original space

he time had come to move on, changing the look completely to reflect a more modern and changed lifestyle for the family. The all wood cabinets were in impeccable condition, so they were retained and painted a fresh bright off white, and the dated laminate countertop was replaced with a new quartz material. All appliances were changed to stainless,

and also the center dining island with new lighting was added in a contrasting charcoal finish that was replicated in the beams, the door and the new floating shelves — which allow art and personal “objets” to be displayed. The original Mexican floor tile, which is consistent throughout the open plan house, remained for continuity and adds visual warmth to the room. Top hung shutters

were removed and large casement windows installed to allow more natural light into the room. The choice of wall color in the deep teal blue is picked up in the hand-made glass backsplash, wrapping the room in an ocean of family history, whilst welcoming new beginnings.
