Home Air Conditioning Maintenance
The benefits of regular maintenance on any machine are well known however there are a wide variety of types and quality. For domestic mini split air-conditioning, the most basic level is washing filters and cleaning drains; however mini split filters cannot block particles less than 40-50 microns. Mold spores, fine dust and other airborne contaminants can infiltrate the internal components, resulting in an odorous, respiratory-irritating coating that gets distributed around the room.
This can be particularly detrimental for those occupants who suffer from respiratory diseases such as asthma. Also, in April 2021 the CDC (Center for Disease Control) acknowledged that COVID-19 is primarily communicated through airborne transmission and not surface transmission. Therefore indoor room air quality can be directly related to the cleanliness of parts not easily seen by users.
A full strip and deep clean maintenance of the indoor unit at least once per year is highly recommended by the industry. A properly cleaned mini-split A/C has tri-
fold value — it increases energy efficiency, extends the working life of the unit and enhances Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) for the occupants.
A good quality deep clean does take time, a single wall mount unit can take several hours to complete, and there are specialist cleaning materials designed to remove dirt but not cause corrosive damage to coils. Another optional extra to consider is a secondary layer of anti-bacterial filters.
When it comes to mitigating airborne particles, the finer the grade of air filter
the better. However with increased grade comes a detrimental effect on system efficiency — the system must work harder to move the same amount of air.
A cost-effective solution is anti-bacterial filters, they come in a variety of options, and are smaller and generally saturated in a particular substance which reacts with airborne pollutants at a molecular level.
There is an Activated Carbon option which is well known for deodorising and absorbing unpleasant smells. Catechin, a natural extract from green tea effectively eliminates 95% of carcinogenic agents.
And Photocatalytic filters which oxidize and degrade organic contaminants. The latest development from GREE is the silver ion filter which is able to sterilise 99% of bacteria.
The cooler months in Bermuda is an ideal time for deep clean maintenance. Many companies slow down after the summer madness and can spare the time for a thorough cleaning. For further enquires please contact Cold Snap Services Ltd, service@coldsnapservices.com. Tel: 234-6227.

The best choice for eco Friendly Shopping Tips
Your grocery shopping cart is an easy place to start going green!
News of global climate change abounds and may seem overwhelming. However, each one of us can take tiny steps to effect big change, such as changing the way we shop at the grocery store. Avoid shrink wrapped fruit and vegetables; nature creates bananas and coconuts with their own sustainable peels or husks, so these don’t need to be shrink wrapped. Select loose items and place them in your own reusable mesh or cloth bags. At the deli counter or pre-made food bar, bring your own store-approved containers.
Reduce the number of trips you take to the store and packages you buy by choosing bulk dry items like fruit, cereal, pastas, and spices. Decant these down into lunch-box size portions for school and work lunches. The same can be done with yogurts. Skip the sugary pre-packaged fruit cups and go for bulk frozen fruit.
Avoid single serving juice sacks and boxes, these are expensive, and man contain unneeded sugars and colouring and become litter on school grounds. Instead purchase concentrated juices which can be watered down and provided in reusable thermoses. Provide water in a reusable water bottle.
For fussy youngsters, create homemade “lunchable” meals by purchasing healthy meats and cheeses in bulk and cutting them into finger-food portions. Purchase a high-quality reusable bento style lunchbox that will last many school years.
Pack your purchased in reusable grocery bags and refuse paper or plastic bags offered by grocery packers. Once at home, store foods in reusable glass containers, covering them in beeswax wrap or cloth. Reusable silicone baggies are perfect for food storage at home or on the go.

Regarding Pests
In Bermuda, pests are an everyday and everywhere occurrence. For more than 70 years, Bermuda Pest Control has protected the island’s homes, businesses, and vehicles from unwanted pests, including rodents, cockroaches, ants, and termites. Here are some tips from the experts on preventing some of our most common pests.
Start with a clean slate
Proper sanitation is always the best first step to keeping pests at bay. While the presence of pests doesn’t necessarily mean a home is dirty, it never hurts to keep things clean. Clearing clutter both inside and outside eliminates pest harborages and helps cut down on cockroaches and ants, as well as a variety of other pests, such as indoor moths and flies.
The trouble with termites
Once termites have taken up residence in your home, getting rid of them can be very difficult and costly. When purchasing a home, make sure to request a termite inspection; you’ll want to know if you need a fumigation down the road. When introducing new wood to the home, whether it’s cabinets, furniture, or building an addition, be sure to have the wood treated beforehand; this will prevent introducing termites that may be lurking in the new wood.
Cover that crack
The best method for dealing with pests is exclusion; staying on top of the physical upkeep of a home or business can stop pests before they ever get in. Check window and door seals regularly; if you can see the light around a door, so can the pests. Rats need a hole the size of a quarter to enter your house; mice only need the size of a dime. If you find a rodent-size hole, make sure to block it with either metal or concrete, as rodents have no trouble chewing through almost anything else.
Go green
If you’re not a fan of pesticides, there are some all-natural solutions you can try. Citronella and peppermint oil are both popular insect repellents. Diatomaceous earth, a product found at most home
and garden stores, can be used to deter crawling insects. Even crushed-up eggshells can be used to stop slugs and snails in their tracks. Lastly, when used correctly, baits can be an effective, low toxicity treatment for ants and roaches.
Contact the pros
If all else fails, contact the professionals at Bermuda Pest Control. Its friendly, knowledgeable staff will be happy to assist you, whether you require a treatment or just want some advice.

Differing tastes resolved W
hen a husband and wife have slightly different tastes, it could make a home renovation difficult to blend them together. HASCO Home interior designers Blakeni Walls and Liz JamesEdwards successfully accomplished this tricky task with a kitchen and bath renovation of a Harrington Sound home.
“We got them to meet them in the middle,” says Blake. “With texture and tones for the wife, and minimalist design for the husband.”
The husband wanted the bathroom to be his spa sanctuary, his inspiration being Nordic spas. “Traditionally, you would use teak wood, but we had to improvise because teak doesn’t dry well in Bermuda’s climate.” The solution was to use a woodlike tile and large chocolate grout lines in the shower. The shower uses a Grohe Spa wall fixture and has a pitched floor with a linear drain.
There’s also an accent-lit buttery, and a full-length frosted glass window, providing privacy while maximizing the natural outdoor light.
The Empava bathtub has its own room – what the owner calls his dream tub room. Plenty of light streams through an expansive window over the flat-bottomed soaker, and an Ancona heated rack keeps the towels dry and toasty.
The bathroom vanity is an open-faced frameless style; the bathroom sink a large trough design. Island Glass completed the look with a large mirror, framed in chrome.
The stylish Swiss Madison toilet has a narrow design for space saving, with a sleek skirted base.
The kitchen renovation in the same home gives the couple a showpiece attraction, a highlight of which is the island. The Calacatta Leon countertop has a breathtaking waterfall edge. The soft white backdrop of the quartz countertop is enhanced with a dramatic grey veining throughout the slab. This same quartz look is also used as the backsplash, enhancing its dramatic effect. It’s also worth noting that the three-slider slab glass window over the sink lines up with the kitchen island.
Recessed lighting adds to the modern minimalist feel.
Two complementary colours were used for the cabinetry, merging the differing styles of the husband and wife, with a textured warm oak on the lower cabinets and smooth matte white above. The warm tones selected in the oak base cabinets help harmonise the European-style cabinetry with the travertine floors.

Made for entertaining
This Pokiok Estate, Smith’s, kitchen is the ideal entertaining space for a woman who loves to show off her delectable creations as she has family and friends over to enjoy food and fellowship.
HASCO Homes interior designer Blakeni Walls says, “The client was going for a clean, livable space. She frequently hosts friends and family so wanted a workspace where she could cook effectively and entertain at the same time.”
The showpiece kitchen island has plenty of room for people to sit and enjoy meals prepared by the owner.
This tuxedo design features fresh white upper cabinets and deep blue bottom cabinets with stunning white Attica quartz countertops in the middle. Blake describes it as “an alluring combination of dense, dark and mild veins with black inky tones that ebb across a flawless white base.” The kitchen island features a Kohler under-mount cast iron sink with a white finish. The sleek curved faucet adds a touch of sophistication. Blake says, “The geometric shapes and color help give it its character.”
The designer worked with the client to create a simple coffee bar area with a customisable beverage fridge below, and a glass door wall above, which features crystal glassware.
Either side of the stove are custom wooden shelves, illuminated underneath to provide warmth and light. The same wood tones are used in the island seating.
The kitchen is outfitted with GE Café appliances. These culinary inspired features are straight from professional kitchens. Blake says “It’s a modern take on the classic white appliance. The customisable finishes give a designer look that makes a statement.” The remaining finishes, handles, knobs, and faucets are also finished in the same bronze finish found on the appliances, to complete the look. It is the perfect touch of warmth in the heart of a home.

A splash of beach chic
This kitchen embodies all the warmth you would expect from an owner who is passionate about family gatherings. The classic design features clean lines, coupled with an open floor plan. Blakeni Walls, interior designer at HASCO Homes, described this kitchen as “refreshing, featuring beautiful, classic white cabinets with a hint of mint in the backsplash.”
The exceptional feature of this kitchen is the island. Blake worked with the client on selecting the beach wood-coloured cabinets, strengthening the modern beach style. On one end of the island there are three drawers and two open shelves that display treasured family cookbooks. Above, the three pendant lights with glass domes have small bubbles, that tie into the nautical feel.
The recessed lighting in the ceiling brings a sparkle to the glassware, proudly displayed in bar area.

Smokey tones
“Amodern take on a traditional design” is how Liz JamesEdwards, a HASCO Home interior designer, who was the lead on this project, describes this stunning kitchen.
Blakeni Walls, HASCO Home interior designer, adds that she loves the aesthetic of the smokey tones as this is an uncommon feature in most Bermuda homes, so it really makes this kitchen standout out. “We don’t see many people go with darker kitchens today, which is why we love it so much.”
The wall has been accented with slate but appears like bricks. “We used a Leger stone that is more traditional on fireplaces but have taken it up the wall as
a backsplash. The spacious farmhouse sink blends seamlessly with the kitchen counter, giving a rustic aesthetic. The wood-look tile flooring, purchased from Pembroke Tile, also pays tribute to a traditional, homey appeal.
So how does the contemporary look get added to this kitchen? “The dark, smokey appliances and dark, smokey cabinets help
modernise it,” says Liz James-Edwards. The Samsung appliances and the Moen faucets have a slate colour, with an elegant, rich stone feel. One of the benefits is that it helps hide dirt, fingerprints, and smudges.
The appliances were purchased through HASCO Imports, a sister company of HASCO Home. The AKDY wallmounted stove vent continues the dark, smokey feel as it sits above the gas stove.
HASCO provided the CNC cabinets, which also have that same smokey texture, but in grey.
Another modern take is that the kitchen windows have taken the Weybourne Cambria Quartz countertop into the sill. “It has blue and grey tones to it, so it looks soft and airy —a timeless blend of classic pillowy marble tones grounded with subtle gray veins for added character and intrigue” points out Liz James-Edwards.

A happy home
Abusy family with a love of the outdoors have created their own perfect home through the spectacular renovation of an old cottage.
With an ultra-modern kitchen that blends into an elegant open-concept dining and living room – all overlooking Bermuda’s magnificent south shore – the two-storey Paget property oozes luxury and glamour.
Yet, because the owners wanted to ensure nowhere is out of bounds for their fun-loving tween sons, nothing is too pristine, and everything is low maintenance.
Returning from an afternoon surfing with wet and sandy feet? Not a problem for the durable brushed stone tile floors.
General wear and tear from family life? Those reclaimed oak beams, oak butcher block kitchen island and quartzite countertops will carry on looking just as good.
The oak beams have been finished in a
lime wash, while other attention to detail includes woven textiles for lighting and imperfect handmade kitchen backsplash tiles that complement the countertops.
“The beauty of using natural materials,
especially if they are rustic like this, is that when it wears and tears over time, it enhances the look,” says Shelley Ray, the senior interior designer at L&S Design, who worked on the renovation.
This is also a family with a passion for cooking, and they will be able to do so in style on the modern-line Aga and induction cooktop popular with chefs.
The large freezer and refrigerator blend into the rest of the room behind cupboard-like doors. The area for heavyduty prep is within conversation-distance of the kitchen island. “It’s almost the concept of a butler’s kitchen but still part of the main kitchen,” Ray says. “And people can be just as involved sitting at the island while dinner is being prepared. The whole room is completely open.”
The dining table matches the outdoor table, while the same kind of stone flooring is used on the inside and the outside porches and pool patio.
“They’re very much an outdoor family, and we wanted to make it as seamless as possible,” Ray says.
“The pool and ocean are directly outside and blurring the lines between inside and outside space was a must.”
The boys’ love of the ocean played a key part in the design, particularly in their new bathroom.
A strong blue helps give it a punchy
KITCHENS
and energetic ambience despite the quiet, clean lines. There are sand colours in the tiles and a hint of sea green within the grey doors.
Upstairs, the owners have created a suite that truly makes the most of the outstanding location.
Glass doors open on to the balcony to give unobstructed views of the south shore, with deep navy frames adding an extra layer to the otherwise minimalist setting.
In the bathroom, there is no glass or panel for the shower, and you wouldn’t even know it was there if you didn’t look up to the ceiling. A good slope allows the water to run down a linear drain; the owners, Ray says, are happy for the stone bathroom floor to dry naturally after they shower.
The owners moved out for one or two years while renovations took place but were in constant conversation with contractors D&J Construction Company and project manager BPML.
“They bought what was a very small cottage and were very happy here for many years. They saved up and thought about how they could improve it,” Ray says.
“There’s something about walking into their home that really lifts your heart, seeing the colours and the ocean. It’s a really happy home.”

Bright with Brilliant Views
Hidden away on Trinity Church Road overlooking Harrington Sound, is a cottage designed by Geoff Parker Architects which, from the outside, looks small, but is large in personality and surprisingly spacious inside.
Built over two storeys, the open plan kitchen and living area is on the lower level, where floor to ceiling sliding doors lead out onto a deep wooden deck overlooking the water, and a separate glass panelled door leads out onto a paved BBQ area around the side of the house.
Designed by Jennifer Dearing at Hamma Galleries, and built by Carvalho Construction, the kitchen, while open plan, is almost ‘galley style’ in look, with most of the cabinetry along one wall. The fridge, while still easily accessible, has been put off to the side to get as much use of all available space as possible.
The central kitchen island provides extra storage and seating, and they even
managed to fit a microwave in there, hidden away from direct view.
The colours are neutral, but with coastal tones to match the views. The cabinets and tile along the back wall are white, as are the countertops and large farmhousestyle sink. For the kitchen floor, the owners chose an ivory tile.
The island cabinetry has been painted in Sherwin-Williams’ ‘Lazy Grey’, which gives the whole area that coastal feel, enhanced by the very striking turquoise pendant light hanging above, the colour of which is reminiscent of South Shore waters on a calm sunny day.

A home hub
Abetter space for cooking and conversation was the main aim for this kitchen and family room
renovation by Eye4Design.
“It is the only dining area in the home, apart from outside under a pergola, so the idea was to make it cozy, conducive to casual conversation, and an open, family seating area”, says Janice Burke, Interior
Decorator at Eye4Design.
To achieve this, an existing L-shaped peninsula was replaced by an 8-foot island which provides more seating and a better connection to the adjacent family room.
In replacing the cabinets, Eye4Design chose Norwich Grey cabinetry from Bermuda Kitchen & Bath for the lowers and white for the uppers. They also used two slightly different, but similar, tones for the countertops. The kitchen’s perimeter countertop, called cotton white, has a brown and grey soft vein running through it while the island countertop, called ocean view, has a busier and more obvious pattern but with the same tones.
Ms. Burke used a stone and plastic, black and white, mosaic backsplash to compliment the black cabinet hardware and faucet and a long, slim, rectangular chandelier over the island.

New family space
Acomplete refit was required for the new kitchen in this recently purchased home, with design firm Eye4Design taking the lead on the project, which included installing new electrical and plumbing, pulling up old wooden floors and floor tiles.
“The homeowners saw the kitchen that I had installed that was featured in last
year’s issue of this publication. They loved the colours and wanted to do the same,” says interior decorator, Janice Burke.
The look that the homeowners had seen and admired included Castle Grey cabinets for the lower units and white for the uppers, both from Bermuda Kitchen & Baths.
“The grey has a blue tinge to it so is a
warm, deep colour,” says Ms Burke. “We chose large, light silvery-grey tiles for the floor, which have a slight sparkle to them, and the countertop is Carrara marble.”
Complimenting the cabinets is a backsplash of glass subway tile with an accent of another glass mosaic behind the stove and by the sink area.
“The colours pick up the greys and seafoam in the room,” she says. “We also used matte black hardware and faucets while the walls were painted a light, neutral, off-white, which gives just enough contrast next to the white cabinetry.”
Eye4Design added to the natural light by upgrading the ceiling lights with LEDs, adding undercounter lighting along the south wall and hanging a “blingy” chandelier in matte black in the breakfast nook.

Warm and welcoming
This kitchen is impeccably designed with loads of practical functionality to meet the needs of a busy family of four.
A distinctive island serves as a communal hub in between the cooktop area and desk space, parents and children can all do their thing without getting in each other’s way – even while staying in sight of each other.
And while elegant colours combine with natural light to create a crystalclear overall appearance, the overall feeling remains homely, thanks to the delicate wood and brass details and a smattering of navy blue.
Tiara Ming, interior designer at CTX Design Group, who worked on the renovation at the Harrington Sound property, says: “They wanted a family kitchen that was open and functional,
that works well with their daily routine.
“It was important for the kitchen to be somewhere you want to spend a lot of time, and a space where everyone feels welcome and comfortable.”
The multipurpose island exudes a masculine yet velvety vibe with its rich navy blue with grey undertones.
“Because there’s so much natural light pouring into that area, it gave us an opportunity to play with the island,” Ming says.
“We wanted to do something different and bold, but also use a classic colour.”
The desk area is intimate, but mom will not feel separated from the rest of the family as she does her paperwork.
“The idea was to create her own space where she can do her work, while also still be in plain sight of the island,” Ming says.
In the cooking area, hard foam tiles
add texture to the cooktop walls beneath a custom-made curved hood.
Symmetry and balance were crucial to the design, with a wood top ledge above the cooker, and tall soft-on-the-eye grey cabinets on either side.
White appliances were chosen instead of stainless steel, but the generally elegant colours are complemented by brass details in the hardware and pendant lights, rustic oak beams and light oak floor.
“It sets a warm and welcoming energy to that space,” Ming says.

Quality materials and design
Stripped to its bare bones and reconstructed from scratch, this Tucker’s Town kitchen has been brought stylishly into the modern day.
Flooring, cabinets, doors, windows, fittings and fixtures – everything is brand new in the renovation of a family home led by the CTX Design Group.
“It was an old cottage that the owners wanted to expand and upgrade,” says Lauren Grayston, a partner at CTX.
“It had a lot of old furniture and cedar beams. It was quite an old, dark space, so while it had some amazing architecture and furniture, it really needed new life breathing into it. We opened it up.”
The owners – who rebuilt the kitchen as part of a total renovation of the 200-year-old property – wanted to create a calm space where their children and grandchildren can feel comfortable.
This was achieved through light flooring, countertops and cabinetry.
“It’s a very busy household and they wanted it to feel relaxed,” Grayston says. “When you are in there, you feel sublime.”
The focal piece of the kitchen is a large island that offers lots of space for preparation and seating for family members and visitors.
Long planks were imported from
Austria to create an eco-friendly solid oak floor.
“The owners really insisted on using authentic materials, good quality and good design,” Grayston says.
“They put their money into quality of materials, using not a lot of bells and fancy whistles. Not a lot of fluff.”
The pale grey blue cooker with brass detailing, brought in from France, complements the almost white cabinetry, while the functional hood has a curve that is carefully integrated into the design.
Aesthetic sconces ensure the kitchen does not feel industrial, while the beautiful marble countertop is designed to give a soothing sense.
The use of brass throughout is also a subtle nod to the history of the house, which originally came with brass hardware and doors.

Crisp and clean
A relaxed atmosphere was the aim for these two casual coastal, and compact bathroom renovations.
Giving the client more storage in the larger of the two bathrooms without crowding the space was key to this redesign. The drawers in the custom cabinetry and recessed mirror cabinets provide multiple options to hide away all the bathroom necessities, keeping the countertop clear, and the space feeling fresh. The design of the narrow
vanity with semi-recessed sinks allows for a double vanity while maximising space for two. The Carrara marble look, large format floor tile, and a glossy linear wall tile for the shower, gave license to add a pop of seafoam green colour in the handcrafted glass tile on the entire vanity wall. The addition of the fabric for the roman window blind in a ‘marine botanical’ patterned fabric couldn’t have been a more perfect fit — it’s as though it was made for this bathroom. The delicate coral paintings with their slightly textural finish are the perfect accompaniment to tie everything together.
The smaller of the two bathrooms conveniently neighbours a guestroom and office space. The glass shower enclosure folds neatly back on itself, opening up the space and allows guests to move easily between sink and shower area when needed. Polished chrome accents keep this space feeling classic and timeless. Stunning small scale Carrara marble herringbone mosaic floor tiling adds interest to the room, while the large white rectangular wall tiles are reminiscent of shiplap, and a subtle nod to the coastal theme. The functionality of the full height tiled walls, recessed mirror cabinet and folding shower panel allow this compact room to seamlessly convert from powder room to wet room.
