every day Meet the Hamilton Princess and Beach Club talent and culture coordinator, whose job is never boring opping out of bed in the morning, Chantel Barnshaw looks forward to what the day might bring. As the talent and culture coordinator at the Hamilton Princess and Beach Club,

the 26-year-old has her day planned out, but something may happen to create an opportunity for her to gain fresh learning experiences. “I’m never bored,� Chantel says. “Every

day I take home something new, and not knowing what is coming next is the best part.â€? But she didn’t always picture a career in human resources. “When I was 18 and graduating from BHS, I was so lost. Other people knew exactly what they wanted to do – they were on their path. I never saw myself in human resources, but now that I’m in it, I can’t imagine going anywhere else. This is where my personality best ĆśWV DQG , HQMR\ ZRUNLQJ ZLWK WKH SHRSOH who are my colleagues.â€? $ VLJQLĆśFDQW SDUW RI WKDW LV ZRUNLQJ ZLWK an excellent team that helps take care of WKH WR RWKHU VWDĆľ DW WKH KRWHO “My team has been a huge help to me. They assist me with anything I need. Working here has been a huge learning experience for me, and everyone has been so supportive.â€? Chantel started at the Hamilton Princess in April 2018 and says she thought it was going to be a daunting challenge getting to know all the employees’ names. But now it is like second nature, as she interacts with them on a daily basis. “We call ourselves the Hamilton Princess and Beach Club family, and, to me, it really does feel like a family. I walk around and see familiar faces, and everyone is smiling. We always look out for each other.â€? Her job calls for her to help give praise WR WKH KDUG ZRUNLQJ VWDĆľ RI WKH +DPLOWRQ Princess, through various awards, many of whom labour in the background but are vital to the hotel’s success. “I enjoy our recognition meetings, as LW EULQJV WKH GLĆľHUHQW WHDPV WRJHWKHU (YHU\RQH LV KDSS\ DQG LW ĆśOOV WKH KRWHO with positive energy,â€? she says. “The guests come in and meet the front RI KRXVH VWDĆľ EXW WKHUH DUH D ORW RI people who work behind the scenes. 7KH KHDUW RI WKH KRXVH VWDĆľ LV H[WUHPHO\ important.â€? While Chantel’s path may have started RĆľ DV XQFHUWDLQ VKH KDV QRZ IRXQG D place she relishes calling home. “I enjoy waking up and coming to work every day. I want to grow in the hospitality industry, and also within my department. I’ve built so many ZRUWKZKLOH UHODWLRQVKLSV ZLWK WKH VWDĆľ here, and I’m excited to see what the future holds with the Hamilton Princess and Beach Club.â€? 11

Trenton Greene, housekeeping supervisor, recently returned from a learning trip to The Fairmont Royal York in Toronto, Canada. Trenton brought back several best practices from his experience abroad and is excited to start implementing these new ideas. I also strongly believe that you should not reveal your plans to too many people because other persons’ opinions may deter you from what it is you want to do with your life. Pursuing your goals is not always easy because life happens along the way. You are only being tested to see how badly you really want it.â€? “As a young child, I often observed therapists working with my younger brother; it was at this point that I was inspired to become a physical therapist,â€? says Tenneil Ratteray. Tenneil is in her second year of physical therapy school at Andrews University and will graduate with a doctorate of physical therapy in August 2020. “Graduate school is a requirement for physical therapists; however, I did not

have the funds required to attend. I searched the Bermuda Scholarship website and applied for various scholarships and was extremely grateful to have been awarded the Bermuda Public Service Bursary. This award not only provides funds toward my tuition, but it gives me the opportunity to work in P\ ĆśHOG RI VWXG\ ZKHQHYHU , UHWXUQ KRPH on break from school.â€? How BHB meets its patients’ nutritional needs Dietary technicians and host aides at Bermuda Hospitals Board ensure patients eat well and get the food they need for recovery hen you are sick or require medical or mental healthcare, you need more than clinical professionals to care for you. Food is integral to the healing process. Bermuda Hospitals Board (BHB) has a full food service and dietary department with jobs ranging from menu planning to cooking, serving, and determining the best foods WR PHHW WKH VSHFLĆśF QXWULWLRQDO QHHGV RI each patient. Kellie-Ann Woods is one of three fulltime hostess aides. She started at BHB in 2010 as a dietary aide, distributing patient food trays. In 2015, the hostess aide position was created. She and two of her colleagues applied and were promoted to the positions. As a hostess aide, Kellie-Ann meets with new patients to determine their food preferences. “Our job is to ensure the patients’ needs are met,â€? she says. “We also manage menu complaints. Patients may complain that they have been served an item they do not eat, something they forgot to say they are allergic to, and

sometimes simply something they do not like. We meet with them and make adjustments to ensure they get food they can eat or prefer.â€? Hostess aides work with all in-patients, including residents in the Long Term Care Unit. “Anytime there is a new patient or a patient meal complaint, we visit the patient and talk with him or her. We care about our patients, and I think this service conveys this sentiment,â€? says Kellie-Ann. “I like the interaction with the patients. I learn a lot when I visit them. I had a vegetarian patient who taught me things I didn’t know about soy milk. I didn’t expect to learn from patients, but this is happening on a daily basis,â€? she adds. Dantel McGowan always had her heart set in working in healthcare. She graduated from London Metropolitan University with a degree in nutrition. She joined BHB in May 2016 as a dietary technician. The dietary technicians are an important part of the dietary professionals in the hospital. They have the best understanding of the menu items each diet contains. Last April, I went to a conference in Missouri to learn about the dietary food service management system that the hospital uses. I never thought the hospital would provide me with overseas training.â€? “Before I worked at BHB, I used to think people just eat to eat,â€? says Kellie-Ann. “You don’t realise until you are sick the vital role food plays in recovery.â€? The conversations intended to build a stronger communication bridge to connect students, parents, and educators. They allowed

students to voice concerns over the lack of available technologies and learning opportunities within schools and to express the need to use technology to enhance the way they learn. After reviewing feedback from the conference, the 2018 change agents felt compelled to articulate new opportunities for schools and educators, as they recognised that it was the responsibility of both the students and the schools to facilitate a positive and technologically advanced learning environment. Just as you can’t learn to swim at the library, you can’t learn what entrepreneurship is about unless you experience it.â€? fear. That feeling remained until I was at Raleigh Nepal headquarters and surrounded by a group of strangers. I was overwhelmed, but I was a woman on a mission, eager to overcome social anxieties. After connecting with other international volunteers, the ƶUVW WKLQJ ZH GLG ZDV GLJ D mile-long water pipeline in

a place called Ranisuwara, providing the villagers with a direct supply of water. Plus, we installed some tap stands at homes, so the villagers could get water for the home and to wash. Ranisuwara was a tiny village that reminded me so much of home I didn’t want to leave. My second phase was a 20-day trek through the

Ruby Valley that includes every terrain you could imagine — jungles, mountains, and too many rivers to count. My WKLUG DQG ƶQDO SKDVH ZDV LQ the village of Gamuntar. I had never had so much fun digging a six-foot-deep toilet pit. I also had to make a presentation on hygiene and the importance of staying in school. Speaking to hundreds of kids was the most nerve-racking and thrilling thing ever. I went to Nepal to give, but I brought so much knowledge and skill back home with me, I have nothing but gratitude for both Raleigh Nepal and Raleigh Bermuda. studying. “My youngest was almost two years old when I started studying, and we were expecting our second child; my wife was due while I was writing the exams. So that made it challenging. On the other hand, having my family helped balance my life, and by managing my time I got through the process successfully.â€? Nick says that having a wellstructured course to follow really helped him. “The CPA isn’t like some other online courses where you get a pile of books and have to work on your own. You receive weekly courses that help keep you on track and lead you in a disciplined way into the exams.â€? Kyle Harvey went to Warwick Academy then to boarding school and Wilfrid Laurier University in Ontario. “When I started at university, I studied business but didn’t have a clear idea of my career path at that point. It was soon after being accepted into the PwC Bermuda internship programme that I realised I wanted to pursue accounting. At that SRLQW 3Z& RĆľHUHG PH D VFKRODUVKLS that helped pay my college fees, and the ĆśUP DOVR RĆľHUHG PH D IXOO WLPH SRVLWLRQ on completion of my bachelor degree. So in my third and fourth year at Wilfrid Laurier I specialised in accounting. Then, I came back to Bermuda, joined PwC full-time, and went straight into the CPA programme. It was satisfying knowing that I had a job to come home to after university. PwC supported me with everything I needed to get through the CPA exams – from small things

like registering me for the exams, to providing a personal mentor who was always there to help and guide me. Immediately after school, I worked in retail. I was eager to pursue something in business but wasn’t sure exactly what area, so I enrolled in the co-working adult programme at Bermuda College. Following those two years, through the Bermuda College, I signed up for my bachelor’s degree with Mount St. Vincent online/distance learning programme.â€? When Susan completed her degree, she obtained a position in the Bermuda RƸFH RI 0D]DUV /LPLWHG DQ LQWHUQDWLRQDO DXGLW DQG DFFRXQWDQF\ ĆśUP :KLOH DW Mazars, she successfully completed the CPA course. It’s worth pointing out that Bermudians don’t always have to attend university overseas to complete the required courses prior to studying for the CPA. Like Susan, a number of students have been successful, studying right here in Bermuda through the Mount St. Vincent programme. age that she wanted to be an accountant. “Since grade nine, I had my entire career plan thought through,� she says. Chelsy attended Mount Saint Agnes and was awarded scholarships from Bacardi and BFIS that enabled her to go away to Acadia University in Nova Scotia. She also did a “study abroad year� in France and an internship program with Bacardi. The Bacardi internship led to a co-op programme with KPMG, which became a full-time position after her graduation. “KPMG was a huge support throughout the CPA programme,� says Chelsy. It was the accounts classes that Danielle Richards took during high school at Cedarbridge Academy that sparked her interest in becoming an accountant. Like Chelsy, Danielle attended Acadia University where she studied Business Administration with a major in 1LFN 7D\ORU

accounting. Returning to Bermuda, she accepted a position with KPMG. The road to gaining the CPA GHVLJQDWLRQ IRU WKHVH ĆśYH %HUPXGLDQV was not easy, but each one says that it KDV GHĆśQLWHO\ EHHQ ZHOO ZRUWK WKH HĆľRUW “You have to set time aside each week in order to do your assignments,â€? explains Susan. “You have a new assignment due each week that you have to send in, so it’s very demanding.â€? “And it’s not just sending in the assignments,â€? adds Nick. “You’ve also got to study the material to make sense of it before you can complete the ‘homework.’ And of course, you need time to revise and prepare for the exams. And all this while holding down a full-time job, and in my case, balance family life as well.â€? Danielle agrees: “Some days, during the busy audit season, I worked until midnight and had studies on top of that. And you do ĆśQG \RXUVHOI VWXG\LQJ GXULQJ WKH VXPPHU when your friends may be out enjoying themselves at the beach. That’s hard. But one of the good things about working for DQ DXGLW ĆśUP LV WKDW WKH\ XQGHUVWDQG WKH demands on CPA students and provide WLPH RĆľ IRU UHYLVLQJ IRU WKH H[DPV DQG DW other times during the course.â€? However, once you have your CPA, GRRUV RSHQ 'DQLHOOH KDV EHHQ RĆľHUHG DQ exciting new position with a start-up fund company. Chelsy is currently applying for a transfer to KPMG in Melbourne , Australia.

Susan’s son hopes to attend university in North America later in 2019, and she is considering a secondment to whichever city he locates to. With her CPA designation, she says she feels that there will be job opportunities wherever she chooses to go. Nick’s employer, Tokio Millennium, has recently been purchased by RenRe, and although the future is somewhat unknown at the moment, he feels that having the CPA under his belt means he is well positioned for upward mobility as opportunities open up as the two companies merge. There’s also new and exciting opportunities for Bermudians interested in accounting. CPA Canada has just announced the setting up of a programme in China, allowing Bermudians and Canadians to study full-time in China for two years to do their prerequisite courses and learn Chinese at the same time. This would be a unique opportunity for anyone who did not take accounting at university. The cost is comparable or less than that of studying at a Canadian university. 2QFH TXDOLƜHG PDQ\ &3$V JR RQ WR leadership positions, with the ability to choose the industry that best matches their area of interest. With the business training obtained not only through studying but also on-the-job experience, CPAs can rise to the top in virtually any area of business.

The rising star who won

an EY scholarship When a company invests in a students' education, you know that person is being given every chance of developing an extremely bright career. emi Wright won the EY R. Gil Tucker Bermuda Scholarship in 2016 following a highly competitive application and review process. Mr. Tucker is the former managing partner of EY Bermuda Ltd. The scholarship is for $30,000 a year, as Demi progresses to become a &DQDGLDQ FHUWLĆśHG SXEOLF DFFRXQWDQW (CPA). The rising star says the EY scholarship funded her junior and senior years at York University in Toronto. “I was fortunate to win the scholarship from EY WR ĆśQLVK P\ EDFKHORUĹĄV GHJUHH , VWDUWHG working on my master’s in January 2019, and now the scholarship is covering that as well.â€? “It was great when I got the news,â€? says Demi. “When I told my parents, they ZHUH VR KDSS\ WR NQRZ WKH ĆśQDQFLDO EXUGHQ ZDV RĆľ WKHLU VKRXOGHUV 7KH (< scholarship helped me focus on my studies knowing that my school fees and living costs were paid for.â€? Demi says the internship with EY was extremely valuable. “I was able to ask questions about the job and discover more about what it entailed. I wouldn’t say that there are negative aspects, but there are more challenges than people might think. Event and project coordination takes a lot of time and planning and can be stressful. Was this something you had always wanted to do? We have always wanted to be chefs, but what made us stick with it is our desire to be the best at what we do. Our desire to learn is a driving factor in that. We always want to know more about food and what we can do to improve ourselves. We felt that the food scene in Bermuda needed a shake-up. After about 20 years of combined experience, we felt it was time to take what we’ve learned and wanted to change and create a blend of the two. At the cafÊ, we can express the easy-going comfort foods that we know and love and elevate them with a level of elegance. With our at-home private dining and event catering services, we want to make sure we give everyone a new taste of what Bermy eats.

Are there any negative aspects of working in this career area that people considering it should be aware of? Being a chef is not as glamorous as it looks on TV. Was this something you had always wanted to do? No. I didn’t have a solid idea of what I wanted to do coming out of high school so my mother, noticing that I had a knack for working with computers, suggested that I try computer science. The rest is history. What is the most interesting or rewarding part of your job? I really enjoy problem-solving, so having the ability to come up with new solutions is great. But the best part is the positive responses we get from our users. It’s really about making their lives easier. If they’re happy, we’re happy. Are there any negative aspects of working in this career that people considering it should be aware of? I wouldn’t say there are any negative aspects, but then again it’s not for everyone. Meeting deadlines can sometimes be intense, and you might have to work outside of UHJXODU RƸFH KRXUV $GGLWLRQDOO\ as important as communication is, you can spend many hours working alone. Is there anything else that would be of interest to someone thinking of this career? Customer service is also vital, which means communicating clearly and simply, so that all aspects of the job are understood, particularly regarding the cost of additional supplies and parts. Was this something you had always wanted to do? Yes, I always wanted to own my own business. It was also the cheapest and quickest option for my business without needing to rent a warehouse or garage. My clients appreciate not having to leave their homes or businesses. Five steps to a career in insurance The Bermuda Foundation For Insurance Studies (BFIS) was created by the insurance industry to assist students interested in careers in insurance. This is achieved through career information, scholarships, mentor networking, internships, and job search. FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS &DUHHU ,QIRUPDWLRQ BFIS schools outreach committee (all young insurance professionals) visit each of Bermuda’s high schools during the fall semester to talk about how the business of insurance works and to explain the PDQ\ GLĆľHUHQW FDUHHU RSSRUWXQLWLHV available. Follow-up “lunch and learnsâ€? for interested students are then organised where students have the opportunity to talk directly with insurance professionals. The BFIS mentor network committee organises speed networking lunches in February for students interested in careers in actuarial science/law (Monday), DFFRXQWLQJ DQG ĆśQDQFH :HGQHVGD\ DQG general insurance (Friday) where they are able to chat to professionals in these VSHFLĆśF ĆśHOGV BFIS schools outreach committee visits all the schools again in January and February to talk to graduating students about applying for scholarships and using the bermudascholarships.com website to guide them through the scholarship application process.

COLLEGE STUDENTS Scholarships. BFIS awards at least 10 scholarships every year to students planning careers in the insurance sector. Various subjects are considered, including risk management, insurance, actuarial science, math, economics, finance, accounting, business,

computer science, finance, and law. Mentor Networking. BFIS matches its scholarship recipients and other students with insurance professionals who can give them advice and guidance as they pursue their academic studies. BFIS organises several networking lunches as well as other related educational opportunities for students during summer and winter vacations where they have the opportunity to meet and chat with insurance professionals in an informal atmosphere. Internships. BFIS organises short, intensive Intro-to-Insurance programmes in the Bermuda, Atlanta, Chicago, and London insurance markets for college students who have completed two years at university. Wyatt really likes the house system at the school. Being in a boarding house with 50 “brothers” and support from his housemasters have helped him to make new friends and get involved in things like the MasterKey admissions programme and the yearbook club. He is very proud that he was a member of the Littleside boys soccer team in the fall that went undefeated in the season and won the independent school championship.
