Fostering Futures: Bermuda's Commitment to Youth Empowerment and Development

he Government of Bermuda is steadfast in its commitment to supporting you in your educational pursuits, career development, and financial stability. The Youth Employment Strategy, crafted by the Ministry of Economy and Labour, is tailored to empower our youth for the evolving employment landscape. Our goal is to continue supporting Bermuda's youth and open up diverse pathways to employment opportunities for you now and in the future. We continue the important work of reforming our public school education system to provide students with the quality of education they deserve. Our new Signature Schools and programmes will help to equip our students for the jobs and opportunities of tomorrow through new trade programmes, hospitality programmes, and enhanced learning experiences in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Our National Youth Policy, spearheaded by the Ministry of Youth, Social Development and Seniors, outlines our Government’s five-year plan to empower and engage Bermuda’s young people by ensuring you are at the forefront of policy decisions. One of the key initiatives of the National Youth Policy is to increase employment and entrepreneurship opportunities for our youth. Leading by example, in 2023, through the Department of Workforce Development, your Government expanded the summer employment programme from 130 to 180 placements. This provided Bermudian high school and university students with real-world experiences, allowing them to apply and enhance their knowledge practically. We have also continued to work alongside our partners in international business to encourage more internships and development opportunities for young

Bermudians. This has seen internships increase to record numbers over the last few years, with more and more of our students benefitting from these experiences. In addition, we continue to execute our Youth Employment Strategy, as promised in our 2020 election platform, to support and guide young people between 18-26 to enter the workforce through training so that they can take advantage of new job opportunities. Thanks to this work, the employment outlook for Bermuda remains positive. As of November 2022, the unemployment rate for youth ages 16 to 24 was 11.1 per cent. A vast improvement from the 32.1% unemployment rate recorded in November 2020. As you chart the course forward and determine the future chapters of your journey, remember that your Government is working tirelessly to build a better Bermuda for all. Whether you become leaders or contributors, may your journey always bring you back home to shape our collective future. Continue to cultivate your curiosity, adopt a mindset of continuous learning, and be brave enough to step outside your comfort zone. Research shows vaping is causing serious medical conditions, even among young people

n recent years, the number of young people in Bermuda, aged 18 or under, who have either tried or taken up vaping has increased, and this poses a great risk to their health. But why should we be worried about this when vaping isn’t as bad as smoking? For a start, many don’t always know the exact ingredients contained in the liquids they’re vaping. Nor do they appreciate the potential consequences of these substances on their brain, lungs, heart, skin, eyes, mouth, throat, and sinuses. The Bermuda Government’s Department for National Drug Control did a National School Survey in 2023 which found that 16% of Bermuda’s students aged between 12 and 18 admitted to vaping nicotine, marijuana, and ‘flavouring’. The most common vape substance among young people is Nicotine, followed by ‘Just Flavouring’, and Marijuana/ hash oil. Just Flavouring is the flavoured liquid known as ‘e-liquid’ or ‘vape juice’. It’s marketed well, looks cool, tastes great and comes in a wide selection of colourful containers. This liquid is heated in e-cigarettes and vape rigs, creating an aerosol that users inhale. However, according to Johns Hopkins cardiologist Michael Blaha, these great tasting, cool liquids can also be deadly. This is because flavour is just one of the ingredients in e-liquid. Vape juices usually 16

include nicotine and dye as well as several other additives and chemicals. Even the heating coil, which allows the liquid to become an inhalable aerosol, releases new chemical substances and trace metals into the user’s lungs. EVALI, which stands for ‘e-cigarette, or vaping, product use associated lung injury’ is a serious medical condition whereby your lungs become damaged from substances contained in e-cigarettes and vaping products. Symptoms include shortness of breath, cough, and chest pain. What’s more worrying is that, in the US, where this has been studied, some EVALI patients were under 18 years old. If you’re young you’re vulnerable The substances in e-cigarettes disproportionately impact younger bodies. Nicotine has been proven to harm the adolescent brain, because it is still developing up until the age of 25. According to the US Centre for Disease Control (CDC), using nicotine while your brain is still developing can harm the parts that control attention, learning, mood, and impulse control. At a time when diagnoses of conditions such as ADHD (attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder), ADD (attention deficit disorder) and anxiety are at an all-time high, this trend is particularly worrying and nicotine addiction using e-cigarettes can make these conditions

worse. In addition to damaging the brain and lungs, vaping can irritate the eyes, damage the heart, cause congestion and nose bleeds, give users a dry mouth, sore throat and bleeding gums, and cause skin irritation and rashes. Addiction Risk One of the reasons people say they enjoy vaping is because it releases their stress and anxiety. They think it clears their head and gives them a burst of energy, but this is just the short-term effect of the nicotine, and the more you inhale, the more you need. Nicotine is addictive and using it when you’re young increases the risk of addiction to cigarettes or other drugs later in life, with potentially disastrous consequences for your overall health and wellbeing. How to Stop For a start, don’t start. It is very hard to say ‘no’ to something, particularly when your peers are doing it and putting you under pressure to do so, but if you value your health, sporting abilities and bank balance – vaping costs money –choose friends who respect your decision. n a world where entrepreneurship is rapidly becoming a preferred career path, Bermuda’s youth are leading the charge, thanks to innovative programmes like BEDC’s Summer Student Entrepreneur Programme (SSEP) and the Youth Entrepreneurs Summit. With the advent of social media, peer-to-peer payment systems, and websites like ByBermuda, starting a business today is easier than ever. Genuine caring and strong determination In her teens, Curlena Smith had already set her sights on a career in nursing

urlena was in the nursing programme at Delaware State University and had completed a summer internship at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital in 2000 when she had to defer her studies. “It was a difficult decision but necessary at the time,” says Curlena. “My mother was a single parent of three, and my paternal grandmother was ill and required home care.” Still passionate about nursing, she worked full time as a nurses’ aide in various community settings. In 2004, she returned to Bermuda Hospitals Board as a nurses’ aide on the MidAtlantic Wellness Institute’s (MWI’s) Reid Ward. This exposure ignited her interest in psychiatric nursing, and she decided she wanted to specialise in this area if she were ever given the opportunity to resume her nursing studies. “As I loved working with the clients at MWI and had a family history of mental illness, the thought to specialise in psychiatric nursing became a future goal,” she recalls. Curlena was determined and took every opportunity to reach her goal. In 2015, she graduated from Bermuda College with an Associate of Science in nursing. In 2018, was awarded a BHB Mental Health Scholarship that took her to the University of Northampton in the UK, where she received a Bachelor Science in nursing (mental health). In March 2023, at age 49, she returned to MWI as a psychiatric nurse in Child and Adolescent Services. She says she finds the work rewarding. “I love working with young people and their families alongside my team,” she says. “Knowing that we are supporting, empowering and educating our young people about mental health and how to cope is so gratifying. “I’m especially proud that at MWI and in Child and Adolescent Services, 26

we are using therapies and techniques that are research based and up to date. For example, we provide personcentred care based on the individual presentation of each of our clients. This is care where the client takes an active role in decisions on their care and treatment. And we do this while adhering to mental health nursing guidelines at all times.” Curlena says it’s not just working with clients that she finds fulfilling. “It’s also that I get to learn from my colleagues and they get to learn from me, as we are a multidisciplinary team,” she says. There is a need for psychiatric nurses on the island, and Curlena points out that there’s good opportunity to advance within the profession as many of the Bermudian psychiatric nurses are approaching retirement. “Equally important is being

Bermudian,” she says. “I understand the cultural dynamic which plays an important role in building a trusting therapeutic relationship with the population we support. “My advice to any Bermudian considering a career as a psychiatric nurse is to gain as much knowledge as possible about the local population afflicted by mental illness in Bermuda. Then, as you study abroad, keep an open mind in all of your clinical experiences and the opportunities that may present. You should also set goals on where you’d like to specialise and then gain work experience in that area.” Bermuda Hospitals Board (BHB) is one of the largest employers on the island and offers a myriad of health services. Chart a career on the water: Join the Royal Bermuda Regiment Coast Guard Make your office in the open ocean, and your daily duties saving lives and enforcing maritime law.

oyal Bermuda Regiment Coast Guard offers protection and security of the island’s territorial waters out to 12 nautical miles, providing 24-hour search-and-rescue capability and enforcing maritime law. It holds the Regiment’s operational divers, which means the unit can carry out sub-surface recovery operations. Lance Corporal Quinton Burgess has been part of the Coast Guard since 2020 and relishes the opportunities it presents to serve the community in a challenging and changing environment. The 46-year-old, from Smith’s, says: “The majority of my work has been in the corporate world, so it has pretty much been in an office – marketing and things of that nature. “At the Coast Guard, my office is outside, I’m not necessarily stuck behind a computer, although we do have elements of that. Most of work that we do is out on the waters around Bermuda.” The Coast Guard works in conjunction with other

agencies, such as the Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre, the Department of Marine and Ports Services and the Bermuda Police Service. LCpl Burgess, a father of two, highlighted that throughout the year, members of the unit participate in multiple training sessions covering topics such as boat handling, navigation, oil-spill management and search-and-rescue operations. It means that while working in an emergency situation might be challenging, the crews are well-prepared to handle whatever they face. LCpl Burgess reflects: “The Coast Guard offers a good training base. If people are unsure about what they want to do, they can come here and learn a lot of things that they wouldn’t necessarily learn behind a desk or in an office setting. “There is a big comradery here and we all work together as a team. “The Coast Guard is totally different from your average nine-to-five: it asks a lot of you, it’s challenging and

we get overseas training opportunities which ask more of you – it’s the full gamut. “At the end of the day, you’re helping to save lives, you’re helping to keep families at ease, you’re doing your part for Bermuda.” Colour Sergeant Tyler Smith, 34, from Paget, was in the Royal Navy for five years before he joined the Regiment in 2013 and noted that many of Bermuda’s recreational activities were in, on or near the water. He adds: “It means we get involved with a lot of things, from SailGP and the America’s Cup, anything to do with law enforcement, search-andrescue, to someone that’s broken down – we can go and help them out, get them safely back to shore – to an average day patrolling on the water or working in the yard. “I do a lot of hands-on work here maintaining and fixing boats.”

CSgt Smith explains that people who join the unit become skilled in navigating the island’s waters and the use of nautical charts. He adds: “Someone who might know boats and water comes to the Coast Guard and they get that little bit of extra knowledge.” Considering opportunities presented by the wider RBR, CSgt Smith, a father of one, says: “It gives you networking opportunities and you get to meet other people from Bermuda. “You might be a chef outside in civvy life but you want to do mechanics, medics or something else – it gives you that diversity of choices and training abilities.” For more information about the Royal Bermuda Regiment, visit www.rbr.bm or call 2381045. or countless individuals, the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation has been the first step on the road to a prosperous and fulfilling career. Six young Bermudians told us how the CPA is working for them. Accountants are more than just number crunchers – and Jessica Thompson has seen it for herself. Jessica, 24, was bitten by the accounting bug as a teenager at Bermuda High School for Girls. “I enjoyed and understood accounting more than other subjects as it required more of an analytical and logical mindset,” she says. She obtained a Bachelor of Commerce degree with a major in accounting at the Desautels Faculty of Management, McGill University, Montreal, in 2021. After starting work as an insurance audit senior with Deloitte in Bermuda the following year, she saw for herself just how rewarding it can be. “As I entered the workforce, I began to appreciate the value of an accounting background and that accountants are not just there to crunch the numbers,” she says. “Accountants can provide sound financial advice using their problemsolving skills to understand a company’s financial statements, which is a powerful tool for a business’s success.”

Deloitte has proved the ideal place to get Jessica’s career up and running. It covered her CPA exam fees, granted study leave to focus on exam preparation and assigned her an exam coach. “The Deloitte culture is one of comradery and support which I found helped me balance my work responsibilities and study goals,” she says. “As a member of the audit insurance team, I receive hands-on audit experience which has enhanced my

professional accounting development.” The CPA designation involves a lot of hard work, but Nicole Santos insists it’s all worth it. Nicole, 26, took an accounting course at CedarBridge Academy, followed by a Bachelor of Commerce degree with a major in accounting at Saint Mary’s University, Halifax. To qualify for the CPA programme, she also had to undergo accounting-related courses – and the designation itself included two foundational courses, two elective courses and two final courses, each of which featured a final exam and preparation. It all culminated in a tenhour exam spread over three days. “While it may seem like a lot, the temporary sacrifice is worth the endless opportunities that await you on the other side,” Nicole says. “A CPA designation can literally take you anywhere and provide you the opportunity to go for any career. The designation is highly respected and attractive to all employers, given the skills needed to obtain it.” From 2019 to 2022, Nicole worked at PwC Bermuda, which covered all her CPA courses, exams, and membership fees. She then moved to Chubb Bermuda, which covered her membership dues and Nicole Santos

final exam. Both employers offered study leave ahead of her exams. She is part of a close-knit team at Chubb, where “everyone gets along really well”. “Chubb has a great culture and is a great organisation to work for,” Nicole says. “They reward hard work and show their commitment to our well-being as employees.” Ashley Farrington has learnt the importance of pushing past self-doubt to pursue her dreams. The CPA designation process took Ashley a total of six years, involving four hours of study per day for the final two years. Support from family and colleagues was crucial, particularly mentorship provided by her employer KPMG. Success also required a strong mindset. “I pride myself on the fact that anything genuinely is possible if you set your mind to it,” says Ashley, 24. “If I were to be reading this article six years ago, I would reflect on a comment like the one I just stated and think, ‘Sure, maybe that worked out for her, but it Your Future 2024

doesn’t mean it will for me – I know myself.’ “Sorry to report that is just not true! You must push past the self-doubt and fear that holds you back and pursue the ambitions that keep you up at night.” Ashley, a former Bermuda High School student, graduated from McGill University in Montreal in 2021 with a Bachelor of

Commerce with a dual concentration in accounting and strategic management. Her interest in the field was sparked by both parents, who held chartered accountant designations. “I wanted to be an accountant due to the career mobility aspect,” she says. “Given that accountants will always be in demand, I noted early on the flexibility this would provide when travelling and finding employment around the world. “The excitement for the doors that would eventually be opened pushed me to commit to the CPA process early on.” The CPA designation opens the door to career prospects far beyond accounting and finance, according to Antoine Jackson. “Many CPAs go on to own and operate businesses such as restaurants,” says Antoine, 27, who works at Deloitte. “As in many other professional lines, there is opportunity to leverage what you have learned in accounting and finance roles to change paths and work in another field of business.” If you want to stay in accounting, the range of options are equally as exciting. “You have the opportunity to work within many roles from leading up to CFO and CEO roles,” he says. “There is also an opportunity to change locations due to CPAs being internationally recognised, resulting in endless chances to work abroad.” Antoine, a former Berkeley Institute pupil, received an associate degree in business administration, accounting and finance at Bermuda College, before completing his Bachelor of Commerce Antoine Jackson

with a major in accounting at Dalhousie University in Halifax. He thanks his accounting teacher at Berkeley and accounting professor at Bermuda College for exposing him to the field and setting him on the CPA path. Deloitte assigned him a mentor to help him through the designation and has also been a good working environment. “The culture of the firm is very fast paced,” Antoine says. “It is very educational. You will learn a lot and learn very fast. “The learning curve is steep. I recall feeling inadequate in my first few months. However, over time it all clicks.” Matthew Zhu advises young people to seize opportunities as they embark on the CPA journey – however difficult they might seem. “My top piece of advice would be to take advantage of every opportunity you get,” Matthew says. “I see this too often – and I’m guilty of it as well – but people talk themselves out of applying for a job, club, or something because they think they won’t get it anyway. “Everything is a learning opportunity. If you are rejected now, it doesn’t mean you won’t get it next time.” Matthew, 24, works for PwC Bermuda. He had long been interested in a career in accounting because he enjoys working with numbers, was strong at math in school and his parents worked in business and accounting. He took accounting courses at Earl Haig Secondary School in Canada, before completing bachelor’s and master’s 30

degrees in accounting at the University of Waterloo, Canada. The CPA designation workload was “difficult at times” but Matthew took advantage of his professors’ office hours and ensured he has part of a productive study group. “It was a great way to reinforce the course material,” he says. His learning continues at PwC, where seniors make time for his questions, and he gets the chance to use new technology. “The career prospects for CPA are endless,” he says. “There are so many specialties that can be pursued beyond the traditional tax and auditing, such as management accounting or forensic accounting.” Life took a surprising turn for Angela DeSilva during her late 20s.

Angela earned an undergraduate degree in psychological studies at the University of Derby in the UK, and a postgraduate diploma in psychology at the University of Gloucestershire. After that, things did not go according to plan. “I was looking for a clinical psychology training position but wasn’t having much luck,” she recalls. “I checked out an information session put on by CPA Bermuda and decided it was the way to go.” Angela, aged 27 at this point, was attracted by the concept of being a professional who could take her work anywhere in the world. But she reflects: “Math is not one of my strengths, nor did I study any accounting until I started the prep programme through CPA Canada. “I had to start at the very beginning by doing all of the prep courses to gain entry into the professional programme.” This meant 14 pre-requisite modules before she could even start the professional programme, meaning a total of seven years of exams – sometimes requiring more than 30 hours of studying per week. Angela, now 34, joined EY Bermuda in 2021 and believes the sky is the limit with the CPA designation. “You can work in all industries and anywhere in the world,” she says. “Even if you aren’t straight out of university, there are other pathways. It is hard work, and it will take time, but that time is going to pass anyway.” Angela DeSilva

This is my fifth year with KPMG since I graduated university in 2019, where I started as a Graduate Student as part of their Lift Off Programme. I had the opportunity to intern with KPMG in 2018 while I was studying mathematics with a major in actuarial science while in university. KPMG allowed me to work directly with the actuarial team on client work and get an understanding of the work I would perform during my career. At the end of this internship, the actuarial team gave me the option to join them once I had graduated and I gladly accepted. If anyone is interested in an actuarial career, individuals must pass a series of exams. KPMG gave me numerous study days and indepth assistance from the actuaries to give me the best chance to pass exams quickly. hristopher Mewett and Alexa DeSilva, two exceptional professionals at EY are defying expectations in the realms of insurance and consulting. Their journeys from internships to integral roles showcase the firm's commitment to learning, collaboration, and individual growth. Alexa DeSilva Alexa was told she would enjoy working at EY because of the people – and after three years at the firm she couldn’t agree more. After two internships in 2020 and 2021, Alexa became a full-time staff member in 2022 and currently works in consulting across the Life and Property & Casualty actuarial teams. “No matter the rank, or which team you work on, the people here make every day feel like a collaboration I am very grateful to be a part of,” she says. Alexa, 23, says individual successes in life and work are celebrated, and

everyone is willing to coach and answer questions. Her highlight so far has been learning skills which she was able to pass on to last summer’s interns. “It was a full-circle moment being able to work alongside the brilliant interns and act as guide if needed,” she explains. It’s a far cry from when she joined in 2020 and “honestly had no clue” what being an actuary involved. “I learned about it through a great counsellor I had at EY. She was eager to share her knowledge and her enthusiasm really put me on to actuarial work.” Christopher Mewett It didn’t take Christopher long to discover EY is the kind of place he could learn skills and develop as an insurance professional. Christopher, from South Africa, joined EY as an intern when he was 20, became full-time two years later and, now 25, works as an assurance senior in financial

services. “I was sceptical about the type of work that you would do day to day at an auditing firm,” he reflects. “But I soon realised it was exactly what I was looking for. It allowed me to see all areas of the business, to find things I was interested in and gain a better understanding of different industries.” Christopher’s job isn’t merely sitting behind a screen – it’s given him the chance to interact with people, build client relationships, mentor juniors, embrace new skills and learn about complex reinsurance scenarios. He says EY has an inclusive culture where there is no such thing as a wrong answer. “I am fortunate enough to work with some incredibly talented people from a knowledge stand point and from a leadership stand point. “They have been influential in how I try to mould myself and develop into the person I strive to be.” Your Future 2024

Q: What made you choose a career in accounting? Credit goes to Ms. Smith, my high school teacher, and Mrs. Parsons, my accounting professor at Bermuda College, for sparking my interest. They introduced me to other CPAs in Bermuda, and with internships at Deloitte, accounting became my chosen path. Q: How did you pick your university and major? Winning the Donald P. Lines Most Outstanding Management Student award at Bermuda College shifted my focus to declare Accounting as my major. I transitioned to Dalhousie University in Canada due to its co-op program, allowing me to alternate between work and study. Q: Why a CPA? The Canadian CPA, internationally recognised and highly sought after, provides a solid foundation for a professional career. Paired with Your Future 2024

Bermuda's demand for qualified professionals, obtaining this designation can propel one's career across industries. Q: Why did you choose Deloitte Bermuda? Deloitte's reputation as a supportive environment for young professionals and personal recommendations led me to choose the firm. The Deloitte Scholarship in 2017, awarded based on my dedication, allowed me to work during school breaks, contributing to both my financial and educational growth. Q: What is a typical day like for you? There isn't a typical day. Each week presents unique tasks and challenges, from performing audit testing to client communication. Effective prioritisation is crucial, especially in meeting strict internal deadlines for audit teams. Q: What is the most challenging accounting problem you've had to solve?

Learning to prioritise urgent and important tasks to meet deadlines, a crucial aspect in our audit teams, has been challenging. Organising multiple jobs and multitasking efficiently leads to fast learning and problem-solving. Q: One piece of advice for your younger self? In the beginning, focus on learning. Don't be afraid to ask questions, find a mentor, leverage their knowledge, and pay it forward when the opportunity arises. Mentorship improves the profession – great accountants teach and guide the next generation. Q: How have you made an impact at Deloitte? As a member of the DEEP Committee (Deloitte Exclusive Experience Programme), I contributed to planning the firm's summer internship programme. Implementing changes such as a rotation schedule and reintroducing sports teams through the Social Committee has positively impacted team building and company morale. Active participation in Impact Day allowed me to give back to the community through volunteer efforts with charities across the island. Antoine Jackson's journey reflects the importance of mentorship, continuous learning, and community engagement in shaping a successful career in accounting. 33

Also, PwC is a diverse environment, with employees from many different countries, which helped me to get to know and understand many different cultures.

Meet Aaron Spencer II, who joined PwC Bermuda full time as an associate after graduating from university and is pursuing his US CPA designation. Tell us about your experience in our HeadStart programme: HeadStart has been an amazing work and learning experience. I successfully completed two summers as an intern at PwC Bermuda and decided this would be the perfect place for me to start my career. I was assigned a coach who helped me with career development. Tell us how PwC has supported you to achieve your goals? Recently, I began taking the CPA exams and PwC has been supportive in allowing me study leave and in paying exam costs. Every year we set goals for what we want 34

to accomplish, and my team enabled me to achieve those goals within my work, allowing me to grow professionally and personally. What general career advice would you give to students, and those considering a career in audit/ accounting? Study hard and do as many internships as possible. Get as much experience as possible in the field that you are interested in. After graduating, continue to be eager to learn, embrace new opportunities, network, and do not be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. Continuous learning and adaptability will serve you well in your postgraduate journey. If you are interested in accounting/ audit try to get experience and make connections at one of the Big 4 accounting firms and pursue your CPA certification. How has PwC’s flexible working environment benefited you?

Let’s hear more about you now. Where did you go to school and why did you consider a career in audit and accounting? For my Bachelor’s degree I went to Oakwood University where I studied accounting, and graduated in 2021. I did my Master’s degree at University of Alabama in Huntsville, and graduated in 2023. I knew I wanted to do accounting/ auditing since I was in high school at Bermuda Institute when I took an introduction to accounting class. The shortage of accountants in the world and especially Bermuda also gave me courage to continue to be in accounting. What are you passionate about outside of work? Outside of work I am passionate about music, football, family, and God! I’ve been playing the saxophone since I was 10-years-old. At 15 I was able to pass the Royal School of Music Grade 8 with a Merit. Football is a big passion of mine whether it is watching or playing it. I support Real Madrid and Brazil, so I’ve had a lot of joy as a fan. I play for X-Roads in Bermuda and have played for Bermuda’s National team at the U16 and U20 levels. My relationship with God has been important to me for many years and I still work hard to improve my relationship with Him through reading my Bible and daily devotion. How to pay for college There are hundreds of scholarships available to Bermudians. Here’s how to find and apply for one Finding funding for further education With rising fees for many colleges and universities, the cost associated with post-secondary education is daunting for many families. However, there are literally hundreds of scholarships available to Bermuda students to be found on bermudasholarships.com. Happily, most scholarship providers today take financial need into consideration, which is all the more reason to apply online in order to be considered for awards. Whether you are studying math or art, science or dance, accounting or horticulture, scholarships are offered for every discipline. Searching for scholarships The bermudascholarships.com website allows you to conduct a search to find scholarships you are eligible for without even having to log in. Then once you have decided on which scholarships are of interest, you can go ahead and 36

create a profile by registering, after which you can log in at any time from any PC or laptop wherever you are. Your profile You will be asked to complete various fields including education, academic achievements, extra-curricular activities, and community service. You will also need to upload various documents that award providers require such as essays, references, and tuition costs. There is also a Statement of Means form that must be completed in the finance section of the student profile. A short instructional video is embedded in the ‘Files’ section that will assist in completing the form. Required Documents Essays – most award providers require an essay, which is a very important part of your application. You may be asked to write on a specific subject so be sure to research. A well-written

essay is critical for your application to be considered, so make certain to have it vetted for accuracy and content by your teacher, a friend or family member. It is unfortunate that some applications are not considered because a deserving student provides a personal statement instead of an essay on a specific topic. If you are asked to write 300 words, try to do so, and please be sure to use paragraphs – there is nothing worse than being presented with a solid block of ‘words’ to read. Transcripts Along with the various documents to upload, you will also be required to provide a school or college transcript. Bermuda students should request their school to upload an official transcript to their profile. This ensures confidentiality and the transcript can only be viewed by award providers who receive your application. Your Future 2024

SCHOLARSHIPS Overseas students should request their college to send an official transcript directly to the bermudascholarships. com administrator for uploading to their profile. Useful resources The site also contains other useful information such as interview tips, FAQs and choosing the right university. There is even a section for parents and educators which may be found useful, and several other links that are helpful. Applications Shortlist all the scholarships you wish to apply for, then once you are satisfied that you have uploaded all required documents, you can click ‘Submit Application’ and will then be asked to upload documents required by award providers. Once done, confirm that you wish to submit your application by pressing Okay and you will then receive a notice advising that your application has been submitted successfully. You will also receive an electronic acknowledgement from the award provider(s).

Deadlines A number of scholarships have deadlines of March 31st/mid- to endApril, etc. so hopefully you are already on track in researching scholarships, uploading documents, short-listing, etc. If not, you still have some time left and are encouraged to start the process as soon as possible in order to be considered for scholarship funding for the coming academic year. In the Resources section of the website, there is a spreadsheet that can be downloaded which you will find useful in keeping track of all your

scholarship applications, ensuring you have all documents required, deadlines, etc. We strongly encourage you to use this tracking tool. Association of Bermuda International Business Education Awards T he Association of Bermuda International Companies offers Bermuda’s largest academic and needs based scholarship fund for Bermudian students. For more than 47 years our scholarship programme has supported promising students at the undergraduate and post-graduate levels leading to careers in Bermuda’s international business sector and supporting services. The ABIC Education Awards are supported by more than 51 member companies looking to encourage young Bermudians to join the international business sector. In the past decade the programme has given more than $6.6M to 222 Bermudian students pursuing full undergraduate or post-graduate degrees at accredited colleges or universities abroad. • Scholarships are awarded on the basis of financial need, academic ability, good character and field of study. • Approximately 60-80 applications are received from Bermudian students each year with 18 – 22 students being awarded undergraduate two-year scholarships valued at $30,000 and one post-graduate scholarship valued at $20,000. ABIC also awards a $5,000 scholarship for the Bermuda College in partnership with PWC. • In 2010 ABIC partnered with several other scholarship providers to launch a comprehensive online scholarship resource, www.bermudascholarships. com that gives students the ability to search for available scholarships and apply directly online. • On the 35th anniversary, ABIC announced a new scholarship, the Shernelle Outerbridge Memorial Award sponsored by Zurich for an additional $15,000 for undergraduate business or finance studies. • In 2016 ABIC partnered with PwC

Make your video interview great

ideo interviewing is being used more and more. It’s especially useful for scholarship committees and Bermudian employers wishing to interview Bermudian students who are studying overseas, or for Bermudians who may be applying for post-graduate

courses or other training overseas. Some employers also use it to screen applicants before deciding whom to invite for a face-to-face interview. Here are some tips to help you make a success of your video interview. If the video interview is going to be

taking place over Zoom, Teams, Skype or a similar messaging application, remember that your interviewer will see your user name, so make sure you choose something professional. Choose a professional-looking location for the interview — not your bedroom. Check the background behind you, where your computer’s camera is pointing, to ensure there is nothing inappropriate or distracting in the shot. Check the lighting in your chosen location. You don’t want it to be too harsh on your face but not so dark so that you can’t be seen clearly. Choose to face a window if possible and not have light from a window shining in behind you. Your computer, ipad or phone’s camera should be at eye level so that you are looking straight into the lens. It won’t make a good impression if you are looking down or looking up when speaking. Make sure you are in a quiet place and that no one will disturb you. It will be distracting for both you and the interviewer if loud noises or other people interrupt the interview. Put your cell phone on ‘do not disturb’ of course. You know that occasionally technology isn’t always perfect, so ensure you are in a location with a reliable Internet connection. Test all the connections well in advance of the time of the interview. Dress appropriately, as if you were attending the firm’s office for a face-toface interview. Before you leave As the interview comes to a close, courteously ask about the next steps: when will the committee be making a decision on awarding this scholarship and, if you were interviewed by more than one person, with whom you should follow up with. Before you leave the building, ask for business cards from the interviewers or contact details from the receptionist. If the interview was conducted via Zoom or other digital platform, you can ask for email addresses. Send a thank you One of the first things you should do is send a thank you to those who interviewed you. Personalise your message by mentioning something specific from the interview. It’s always a nice touch to send an old-fashioned paper note; if that’s not possible, or it’s a high-tech company and mailing a letter or card seems inappropriate, an email letting them know that you appreciate their time is also acceptable. Another possibility is to send a message of thanks through LinkedIn. Additional material Another way to follow-up is to send additional material. Perhaps something came up during the interview around which you could send pertinent information that the interviewers may not be aware of. Or you may now be clearer about what the interviewers are looking for. But be careful about making this a “re-do” event. Only send new information and don’t use it as an opportunity to correct the answer to a question you may have flubbed or explain what you think may have been misunderstood. It’s critical that your approach here is appropriate and professional. Be respectful and don’t push too hard. Keep positive while you wait to hear about your application, and good luck! s a teenager, there are lots of things you'd like to buy if you had a little more money. The latest trainers, a new phone, your first bike — or car. Saving up for these things can sometimes feel like a challenge, but it doesn't need to be. By following a few simple tips, you can start building up a pot of money to spend on whatever you want. And, you'll still enjoy a little disposable cash to spend on day-to-day expenses. Here are our best savings tips for teenagers. 1. Open a savings account A savings account can help you to keep a pot of money separate from your main account, reducing the temptation to spend it. Many savings accounts also offer better interest rates, meaning you can grow your money pot faster. The best way to manage a savings account is to add to it on a regular basis and withdraw as little as possible. Set up a direct debit so that the same amount is taken out of your pay or allowance every month. That way you're less likely to miss the money. By setting up a direct debit you save without thinking. It is easy to make a plan and have good intentions, but you might just forget to save or send that transfer. Taking ‘human error’ out of

the equation with a direct debit makes saving more successful. Different types of savings account offer different benefits and restrictions, so make sure you check the terms and conditions carefully to ensure your account will be a good fit for your personal goals and saving habits. As a teenager, you may need a parent or guardian to be present in order to open a savings account, and you may need to meet some criteria in order to be eligible. 2. Figure out how much you can afford to save Setting a regular savings target each month is the best way to consistently build your money pot. So if you have a regular income from a part-time job or allowance, it might be a good idea to add a percentage of it to your savings account each month. You can leave the remaining amount for everyday expenses and treats. Obviously, the more you can save, the more quickly you'll reach your goal. But it's important to be realistic. Try to find a balance that maximises your savings while also giving you enough disposable cash to treat yourself from time to time. 3. Set a savings goal Setting yourself a specific goal to reward your saving efforts can be a great

incentive to stay on track. This might be something specific that you want to spend the money on, such as a bike or a trip overseas, or it could be an amount you want to reach by a specific date. Knowing what you are saving for is important, it gives you a ‘why’. Understanding the reason you are saving will motivate you to keep your savings plan. Make sure your goals are ambitious but realistic. You'll quickly become discouraged if you leave yourself so short of everyday cash that you're frequently running out of money or being forced to miss out on fun events with friends. Whatever your goal is, keep track of it and remember to note down your progress. You'll find that this encourages you to stick to your plans and hopefully achieve your goal even faster. 4. Review your spending Before you start saving, it's a good idea to look at how you currently manage your money. Do you tend to run out before the end of each month, or do you often have a little left over? Make a list of all the things you regularly spend money on — such as food, clothes and nights out. Are there any areas where you might be overspending? Could you potentially cut back a little so that you have more left over to put towards your savings goals? 5. Keep going Saving money can feel like a long road at first, but it's important to stick with it. Don't be disheartened if there are challenges along the way. As long as you're consistently putting money aside and resisting the temptation to dip into it too often, your ultimate savings goal should be within reach. 6. The earlier the better It’s never too early to start saving for your future. As a teenager you have time on your side and can take advantage of compound interest (interest on interest). Starting early is a real asset. Investing can be a good way to make your savings work for you, and saving to invest, to grow your funds for a specific future goal is a good place to start. Join us in discovering the inspiring narratives of these trailblazers, shaping the future of STEM with passion, expertise, and resilience Jessica Young was always fascinated by wildlife and had teaching in the blood – so perhaps inevitably ended up with a career that combines both.

A science teacher who has helped modernise Warwick Academy’s approach to the subject, Young recalls when her STEM spark was lit. “I grew up in Spanish Point and spent many a day exploring the woodland areas and rocky coastline,” she says. “I had a love of nature and would often foster rescued animals, which later led to me volunteering and then working for the SPCA.” Young, the daughter of a former woodwork teacher at The Robert Crawford School, would also spend time going into empty classrooms pretending to be a teacher. She says: “While I did consider different pathways in science, in the end I combined my love of nature with teaching.” Growing up, she grabbed opportunities to gain experience at the National Trust, Bermuda Aquarium Museum and Zoo and Nonsuch Island conservation camp, before completing a degree in biology at Newcastle University and teacher training at Nottingham University. Young arrived at Warwick Academy in 2005 and was heavily involved in shifting the school’s approach to a

more hands-on form of learning. She helped spearhead the creation of the Marine Science Facility next to Hamilton Harbour, which has enabled top-level research to be integrated into the curriculum, played a role in the school achieving Green Flag status and started a primary marine club and a science fair for Year 8 pupils. After a period as head of sciences, she now serves as science enrichment coordinator, in which she encourages more “real-life application” in science lessons. “I am always filled with pride when I see students go on and be successful in life,” Young says. “I love when a student has that spark that you can nurture and develop to help them understand and think critically about the world around them.” STEM has many nuances so lends itself to a wide variety of career options. Young says: “There are lots of opportunities in this pathway if you like to be intellectually challenged, think outside the box, problem-solve, and have a dynamic job that is not always the same day to day. “As for being a female, I think if you can articulate your thoughts well, are collaborative and have confidence in Your Future 2024

yourself there is no limit to what you can do in this field.” Dr Desiree Spriggs has used her forensic skills to solve numerous crimes in Bermuda, founded the island’s first forensic DNA laboratory and helped lead us through the Covid-19 pandemic. It’s been a whirlwind career since, at the age of 20, she realised how she could make STEM work for her. “I had been interested in science since I was at primary school when I wanted to be a doctor,” she says. “But once I started doing forensic medicine, I saw it was a good fit for me. It was all lab-based, analytical and hands on. That’s what I felt I was good at.” A former Berkeley Institute student, Dr Spriggs achieved a graduate degree in forensic science in DNA in Scotland, before completing a PhD in forensic medicine and science at the University of Glasgow. Her training took her to the NYPD Drugs Laboratory in New York, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Vancouver, the DEA in Virginia and the Laboratory of the Government Chemist in Teddington, England. On returning to Bermuda, she became one of the first Bermudian forensic scientists and worked as an analyst for

the Government. “It was interesting that people didn’t believe I had a PhD because I was 27 and trying to do all these fantastic things with the knowledge that I had,” she recalls. Her vast training was the ideal preparation for the multifaceted role, which involved working as a toxicologist and drug chemist, assisting with crime scene investigations, and testifying as an expert in Bermuda’s courts more than 100 times. She recalls solving one murder case from home, while on maternity leave, when the police could find no evidence until she uncovered traces of the victim’s blood inside the suspect’s cellphone. “He was prosecuted off that! You become the unsung hero in every single case you do. The number of cases we helped solve over the 16 years was just amazing.” Dr Spriggs later established the Helix Lab, which helped move the police into a new era of forensic science by transferring Bermuda’s criminal database to a world-class profile-match technology, SmallPond. Helix was responsible for Covid screening for Bermuda, gaining international recognition for its achievements in testing. 51

WOMEN IN STEM “I’m very proud of what I’ve accomplished from forensic science, for the police, for the judicial system, for my impact with the pandemic,” she says. “It shows we have the ability here. We can make a difference.” Growing up as a math whiz, Dr Carika Weldon’s family thought she was destined to be an actuary. But although she excelled at numbers from her early primary school days, it was science that truly grabbed young Carika’s heart. “Science was always my passion,” she says. “I just enjoy knowing why things happen. I have a really curious personality. I was always asking my science teacher questions.” It’s clear from her accomplishments that STEM was the right career path. While still in her 20s, Dr Weldon became a household name in Bermuda fighting Covid-19 as science advisor to the Premier. She was also laboratory director of the government’s Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory, which she created. Since then, she has formed CariGenetics to help use research to create a healthier future for Bermuda. In doing so, she became the first sole black female founder of a genomics company in the world. Not bad for someone who didn’t get accepted at her first-choice universities. “I am Dr Weldon, and I led the pandemic, but it wasn’t like my path was straightforward,” she insists. A high achiever at school, Dr Weldon applied to top British institutions including Oxford University. She ended up at the University of Leicester, where she received such excellent mentoring and hands-on experience that she felt it was meant to be. She received her Bachelor of Science honours degree in medical biochemistry and completed her Doctor of Philosophy in biochemistry at the same university, before becoming the youngest fulltime lecturer in biomedical and medical sciences at Leicester’s De Montfort University. Dr Weldon returned to the island to create the Bermuda Principles Foundation, to try to encourage more young people into the world of science, and then finally made her mark at Oxford, 52

where she worked as a research scientist within the university’s Oxford Genomics Centre. Then came the pandemic and the call from Bermuda. “I didn’t know what was happening at the time,” she recalls. “I had the skillset, so I said let me stay for a couple of months and then we all know how that went! “It was good to know that I could be the role model for other people that I didn’t have – there was no Bermudian scientist that I was looking up to. So, I became that role model for a lot of young people, and I’ve had them reach out.” Amy Harvey is a living example of why you should not listen to people who tell you “No”. Mrs. Harvey, a senior lecturer in earth

and environmental science at Bermuda College, remembers seeking career advice as a budding STEM young student. “I knew I really loved environmental science but at the time did not know what steps to pursue as it was an emerging field,” she says. “I went to someone who I thought would give good advice and they told me to become a lawyer! Thankfully, I did not listen to them as I would have been miserable.” Mrs. Harvey ended up achieving a Bachelor of Science in biology from McGill University in Montreal and master of science in environmental science at Trinity College, Dublin. This led to roles as environmental consultant in Ireland and waste education and enforcement officer in Your Future 2024

environment and conservation,” she says. “This camp was amazing as we were so connected to nature. We slept under the stars, got to go turtle tagging and snorkelling in places off the beaten track while learning from local experts in conservation. “I loved learning all about Bermuda’s

Women in Science Unite for Collaboration, Support, and Celebration

ore than 50 female scientists are sharing knowledge and support through a new networking organisation. Women in Science was established after Dr Rosemarie McMahon, the Director of the Youth Climate Summit at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI), discovered many individuals were making significant contributions to science across various organisations. “Through my climate outreach and engagement, I connected with numerous individuals and discovered a lack of awareness among organisations about each other’s initiatives,” says McMahon. “There are many women in those organisations doing fantastic work. I felt it was really important for them to be able to network too.” McMahon and environmentalist Vanese Flood Gordon responded by setting up Women in Science, which had 53 members by January. “While there may be women who haven’t joined the group yet, we’ve already gathered representation from

most of the crucial organisations in the science field on the island,” McMahon says. Group members share expertise as they collaborate on projects, connect each other with useful contacts,

flora and fauna. I remember feeling awestruck. I loved it so much that they invited me back to be a junior counsellor the next year.” Now she finds fulfillment helping young adults discover their passion and become awestruck themselves. “I teach students who have never been to places such as Horseshoe Bay, Blue Hole Nature Reserve or Spittal Pond. “Seeing them experience these places for the first time is so rewarding. I believe that connecting with nature will encourage them to become environmental stewards.” Mrs. Harvey advised young women to get the best quality education that they can. “Education can never be taken from you and will open doors you may not be expecting,” she says. “Be intentional about how you develop yourself. Don’t settle. Be open and ready for opportunities. Most of mine came from simple conversations that I didn’t even realise would amount to anything.” advertise upcoming events and offer support and encouragement. “It’s always nice to be in a group where people share your interest and work on similar topics,” McMahon explains. “It’s so refreshing to meet women who have gone through the same career track. We are all in the same field, and we are all trying to do the same work. It’s been a fantastic way to engage people.” The group is planning to mark International Women’s Day on March 5 with an evening reception at Verdmont Historic House, a National Trust building in Smith’s. The event is sponsored by Aspen Insurance, HSBC and Swan Group, and funds will go towards the National Trust’s education programme. McMahon wants to recognise scientists for their unheralded efforts. “It’s about thanking them for all the work they do,” she says. “This job requires a lot of personal investment and sometimes non-traditional hours. It can be especially challenging for women, particularly if they’re working moms and have so many commitments.”

During summer, the demands intensify, requiring all hands on deck for various activities, from educational camps to leisurely evening cruises and snorkeling outings. Even during the vessel's maintenance periods, Pollard dedicates long hours at the boatyard, personally overseeing tasks like painting, repairs, and servicing. His journey began at 21 when he purchased his first salvaged boat, leading to a sevenyear stint as a charter captain. Despite the challenges of earning a living from the unpredictable ocean, he finds it rewarding. Starting work at daybreak, often before 6.30 am, Rodday supplies East End Fisheries and local restaurants. On good days, he nets various species like rockfish, wahoo, and tuna. Frustrating days with poor catches are common, but experience guides him on when to go out. When facing unsavory weather, Rodday prioritises safety, saying, “There’s always something to be worked on at the dock so that as soon as the weather clears up you are all set to go out again.” He emphasises financial prudence for the variable nature of his profession. Despite difficulties, Rodday finds joy in family reactions after a successful day, appreciates his small community,

He’s the Director of Operations at the BCAA where he provides safety and regulatory oversight for both local and international operators on the Bermuda Aircraft Registry, and L.F. Wade International Airport. For as long as he can remember, Tariq dreamed of becoming a pilot – he’s been fascinated by airplanes and flying “since forever.” He knew the path to realising his dream would have its challenges – flight school is very expensive and he would have to leave Bermuda – but Tariq was committed to making it work. He started by saving his money while attending Bermuda College as a police cadet and then moved to Florida for flight school. Early on, Tariq recognised the importance

f you’d like to be an accountant but you’re unable to follow the traditional four-year Certified Public Accountant track, Bermuda College has a course that could be right up your street. The College’s Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) programme is ideal for people who need evening classes because they work during the day

or cannot study overseas. The course is designed to be flexible with manageable costs, while all exams are sat at the College. There are several entry points depending on your educational background and experience, including ACCA’s Foundations in Accountancy, which provides an introduction to the

finance sector. The foundational option is suitable for high school graduates, mature students and working professionals with no formal academic qualifications. Individuals not aiming for the designation can take part in the ACCA programme to earn technical accounting qualifications to prepare them for accounting-related roles. Past students have included teachers, lawyers, tradesmen, and healthcare professionals. Mark Harris, a risk officer involved with the ACCA Bermuda Chapter, says: “With the ACCA programme, you don’t have to spend a fortune at university to become an accountant and get a pretty good job here in Bermuda. “Insurance and reinsurance firms are looking to give opportunities to Bermudians, and the ACCA course can set you on that track.” Mentors from the Bermuda Chapter are on hand to help students pursuing ACCA qualifications and networking sessions are held annually.
