POST-GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP

In honour of Sir Harry D. Butterfield, this scholarship is open to Bermudians commencing, or already pursuing, an undergraduate degree overseas at an accredited university. It is awarded on the basis of academic excellence, community involvement, and extracurricular activities, as well as demonstration of leadership abilities. The award hasan annual value of BMD $25,000 for up to four years.

The Butterfield Post-Graduate Scholarship is open to residents of Bermuda, the Cayman Islands, The Bahamas, Guernsey, the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Canada Bermuda, Canada, the Cayman Islands, The Bahamas, the UK, Guernsey, Jersey, Switzerland, Singapore and Mauritius, who obtained an undergraduate degree and are ccommencing or already pursuing an advanced degree at an accredited university in a field of study related to the improvement or protection of island/maritime environments. The award has an annual value of USD $25,000 for up to four years.

Bermuda to take an opportunity to work at PwC London. I was hoping for a new experience and to develop professionally. I spent three years in London and consider the decision to go there as one of the best of my career.

Tell us about your experience in the HeadStart programme. 7DQLHVKD My experience with the Headstart programme was unique. , VWDUWHG ZLWK WKH ƶUP DV D +XPDQ Resource Associate and transitioned into ƶQDQFLDO VHUYLFHV 7KURXJK WKH +HDG6WDUW programme I received support and coaching to successfully complete my CPA exams. I was then able to become a mentor to other students in the HeadStart programme. -HUHP\ I started with PwC right out of University. PwC was critical in helping me get through all the accountancy exam and study requirements. My PwC mentors’ guidance was really valuable throughout the programme and helped me balance study and work.

What was the process/transition like? 7DQLHVKD The transition was seamless. 7KHUH ZHUH VRPH DGMXVWPHQWV VXFK DV WKH VL]H RI WKH RƸFH DQG FOLHQW WUDYHO KRZHYHU VWD\LQJ ZLWKLQ 3Z& PHDQW there were similarities which eased the transition. Tell us about your decision to take part in the PwC Global Mobility opportunities in Boston and London. 7DQLHVKD The decision to explore global mobility was predicated on increasing exposure to opportunities LQ WKH LQVXUDQFH LQGXVWU\ GHYHORSLQJ P\ UROH ZLWKLQ WKH ƶUP DQG H[SDQGLQJ my professional network. What considerations did you take when deciding where you wanted to gain overseas experience? -HUHP\ I wanted to go to one of the QHWZRUN V PDUTXHH ORFDWLRQV VR 1HZ York and London were really my main RSWLRQV $V DQ LQVXUDQFH VSHFLDOLVW London is really at the epicenter of the insurance market. Why was global mobility important to you? -HUHP\ :H OLYH LQ D ELJ ZRUOG EXW RQH that is very connected. Experiencing GLƵHUHQW FXOWXUHV ZRUNLQJ ZLWK GLƵHUHQW SHRSOH DQG EURDGHQLQJ \RXU FDSDELOLWLHV is hugely important. Through global mobility I was able to do all of this and because most of the logistics were taken care of I was able to focus on my professional development. How has this experience impacted your career? 7DQLHVKD Global Mobility provided me perspective outside the 21 square miles in which I had grown comfortable and allowed me to expand on both my network and industry exposure. I then attended University of Georgia (UGA) and received my Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance. Before JUDGXDWLQJ 8*$ , UHFHLYHG D MRE RƵ HU IURP D ƶ UP LQ $WODQWD DQG ZDV H[SHFWHG WR begin employment in January 2018. , DFFHSWHG WKH RƵ HU EXW XQIRUWXQDWHO\ there was a delay with receiving my OPT ZRUN YLVD $V D UHVXOW , KDG WR SRVWSRQH my start date to June 2018. With the OPT visa only allowing me to work for 12 PRQWKV DQG KDYLQJ ZDVWHG ƶ YH PRQWKV ZDLWLQJ IRU P\ VWDUW GDWH LQ -XQH DORQJ with the low probability of receiving a ORQJHU WHUP ZRUN YLVD DIWHU PRQWKV I decided to return home to Bermuda to seek employment. Although I had three summers of work experience (including a summer working LQ +RXVWRQ LQ WKH ƶ QDQFLDO VHUYLFHV LQGXVWU\ DQG D GHJUHH VRPH HPSOR\HUV VWLOO WKRXJKW , ZDV ţQRW H[SHULHQFHGŤ enough for entry level positions. This led me to work in a temp position with D UHLQVXUDQFH FRPSDQ\ DQG WKHQ D permanent administrator position in banking. Unhappy with my role as an administrator I continued to search for

I knew I was going to pursue P\ &3$ VR , FKRVH WR JHW D GHJUHH LQ accounting and then to further that I spent a summer in a classroom to get a graduate diploma in accounting directly DIWHU ƶ QLVKLQJ P\ XQGHUJUDGXDWH GHJUHH Without an accounting degree the CPA process would be roughly four to ƶ YH \HDUV RI VWXG\LQJ ZRUNLQJ :LWK an accounting degree the CPA process usually takes three years and with a graduate diploma it took me one year of VWXG\LQJ ZRUNLQJ You still need 30 months of work experience no matter which route you take. EY organises events throughout the year for the employees. For more than 42 years its scholarship programme has supported promising students at the undergraduate and post-graduate levels leading to careers in Bermuda’s international business sector and supporting services. GREEN FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP Peter, Alexander and Andrew Green are pleased to announce that we will be doubling our scholarship amount to students studying subjects considered important to Bermuda’s future. All recipients will still receive $5,000 but those studying fields considered important to Bermuda such as medicine, nursing, hotel and hospitality management, finance, insurance, solicitor, etc, will receive an additional $5,000 a year.

We would like to remind candidates that they must apply for the Knowledge Quest Scholarship in order to be eligible for the Green Family Scholarship. The Green Family Scholarship will be awarded to ten students each year who will then receive $5,000/$10,000 annually for a period of no more then four years towards education and tuition costs to an accredited college or university abroad, subject to receipt of satisfactory grades at the end of each academic year.

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES I wanted to pursue a degree in Canada but it wasn’t until I did a university tour around the country with Saltus Grammar School and visited the U of G campus that I decided on Guelph. My decision came about not only after learning about the wide range of student services and UHVLGHQFH SURJUDPPLQJ RƵ HUHG RQ FDPSXV EXW WKH UHFHQW GRQDWLRQ DQG renovation to the Lang School of Business and Economics. As a commerce (business) VWXGHQW WKH PRVW LPSRUWDQW IDFWRU IRU P\ decision was a hands-on education. This ZDV GHƶ QLWHO\ RƵ HUHG LQ PRVW RI P\ ƶ UVW VHPHVWHU FRXUVHV LQFOXGLQJ D FRPSDQ\ case competition which we prepared and delivered to the board of directors in a short period of time. Starting at the XQLYHUVLW\ XQGHU WKH XQGHFODUHG PDMRU ZDV GHƶ QLWHO\ D JUHDW GHFLVLRQ IRU PH DV P\ ƶ UVW VHPHVWHU FODVVHV RSHQHG P\ YLHZ WRZDUGV GLƵ HUHQW FRQFHQWUDWLRQV DQG , VRRQ IRXQG D SDVVLRQ IRU ƶ QDQFH DQG accounting. While studying at Warwick Academy she has been active in volunteer ZRUN D FRQVLVWHQW KRQRXU UROO VWXGHQW and a willing member of the school in many areas. This year she was chosen to be Human Rights leader. This has given her the opportunity to let her leadership and communication skills blossom and gave her the chance to participate in the Student Diversity Leadership conference LQ 1DVKYLOOH 7HQQHVVHH 2XWVLGH RI VFKRRO she has volunteered at the hospital as a Candy Striper. You have the talent We have the opportunities Robert Clements Scholarship The fully-funded Robert Clements Scholarship is awarded to a qualified Bermudian student studying full-time towards an undergraduate or graduate degree in insurance, risk management, actuarial science, or other insurance related disciplines. The scholarship covers tuition fees, living expenses, books and airfare in addition to offering employment opportunities. Application deadline: 30 April each year Bermuda College Education Award The Bermuda College Education Award is offered to a qualified graduate of Bermuda College, enrolled in at least the third (junior) year of a 4-year (or the second year of a 3-year UK) degree at an accredited university. The Award of $15,000 per year, assists with tuition and fees for up to two years immediately following graduation.
