temperatures and exposure to sunlight will reduce the time the virus survives on surfaces and objects.

DEVELOP YOUR PLAN Evaluate your workplace to determine what kinds of surfaces and materials make up that area. Most surfaces and objects will just need normal routine cleaning. Frequently touched surfaces and objects like door handles will need to be cleaned and then disinfected to further reduce the risk of germs on surfaces and objects. Examples of frequently touched surfaces and objects are: tables, doorknobs, light switches, countertops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets, faucets and sinks, touch screens, ATM machines. You should also consider what items can be moved or removed completely to reduce frequent handling or contact from multiple people. Soft and porous materials, such as area rugs and seating, may be removed or stored to reduce the challenges with cleaning and disinfecting them. It is critical that your plan includes how to maintain a cleaning and disinfecting strategy, keeping it flexible with your staff, and adjusting as guidance is updated and if your specific circumstances change. Some surfaces only need to be cleaned with soap and water. For example, surfaces and objects that are not frequently touched should be cleaned and do not require additional disinfection.

Soothing turquoise Hair and beauty salon moves into relaxing, friendly new home

“W

e had been in the same location on the balcony level of Washington Mall for 30 years”, says Alison Williams, owner of Headway Hair and Body. “At first, we shared the space with Dodd’s Barber Shop, and as our businesses grew, Dodd’s moved to a new space a few doors down. Headway continued to grow and for many years we knew that we needed more space, and it was Covid that finally pushed us to make the move.” Due to strict health measures introduced by the Government in 2020, Headway couldn’t make use of all its styling chairs and shampoo basins, as they were not spaced far enough apart. Ms. Williams says that they also needed to modernise, “I didn’t feel that our reception area greeted people in the professional manner I would have liked.” Headway is still located on the Church Street level of Washington Mall; however, it is now at the top of the stairs from the Washington Lane entrance of the Mall. The new salon is more spacious, allowing greater separation between the styling stations and shampoo basins, meeting the pandemic requirements. It also has an additional manicure/pedicure room, as well as a beauty room. The turquoise colour scheme is something that reminds Ms. Williams of Bermuda’s calming ocean waters. “There’s nothing I enjoy more than breathing in the views of our beautiful blue waters and I wanted something to make me feel the

same way when I’m in the salon. It just so happens that one of our biggest selling retail lines, Moroccanoil products, uses a similar colour palette, which fits so well in our displays.” Although Headway has a modern vibe, the salon has been designed with an ageless quality and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Ms. Williams chose European cabinetry for their size and style and says, “American fixtures and fittings are generally much wider and heavier looking than their European counterparts, and I find that for our industry and for Bermuda, European cabinets are more suitable.” Ms. Williams says that she designed the window unit herself, to display products that people could view as they walked by, and also creating storage, and

providing privacy for those within the salon. The chandelier over the reception area has a story to tell. “My mum who had also been a hairdresser, loved anything that twinkled and shined”, explains Ms. Williams. “I’m quite the opposite. I’m not a sparkly girl, so when my mum passed, I wanted to honour her and have a little bit of her in the salon. I came across a Bermudian artist, living in London, who works in glass, Laura Elizabeth Smith. I really admired her work and asked her to create a chandelier suitable for the salon, combining the turquoise colour with the silver thread that provides the sparkly element reflective of my mum.” Summing up the overall design, Ms. Williams says that she feels her staff and clients are all part of her extended family and that she wanted the salon to feel like coming home to a place that is personal, warm, and friendly — something she has clearly achieved with the new look Headway Hair and Body.

Atrium F ive floors in the building have been updated. Finishes have been replaced in the restrooms in the shared spaces. The firm invigorated the ground floor’s directory and colour scheme, making it more inviting. Jonathan Castro, principal at Cooper Gardner, says his company was charged with updating the shared tenant space throughout the building. “It was dated, and the owners (MSB) wanted to freshen up the look. Five floors in the building have been updated. Finishes have been replaced in the restrooms in the shared spaces, and the ground floor’s directory and colour scheme have been updated and invigorated, making it more inviting.” The atrium had been planned as a communal meeting space, but COVID-19 social restrictions forced a change of direction to make it more of a reflective space. Wire-mesh clouds seemingly float in the lobby, which gives it a heavenly feel. The support details are hidden so they would not be seen to the casual observer. Mr. Castro enthuses, “the most interesting part is the suspended clouds, which gives it a bit of whimsy.” The centre of the atrium has eight geometric couches in three shades of blue. The couches can be arranged into different configurations to add an element of flexibility, so the look can be changed

every few months. The principal architect says the blue shades help break up the look, so it isn’t uniform. “Giving them

varying shades creates more interest, and psychologically, blue is a calming colour.” The LED lighting also provides the area with a fresh look. “The large LED discs are something people don’t see often. They generate a lot of light, elevating spaces that used to be very dark.” Stone tile of silver, black, and white leads the way from the entrance to the elevator and forms a grounding element that connects the space together. And the custom-made carpet features colours radiating from the centre to give dynamic interest. “The previous lobby used to be a place that people just moved through, but now we’ve created a reason to stop and pause” says Mr. Castro.

Natural expansion A lthough Salt+Cedar’s online sales are an important part of its business, owner Andrea Fubler says it is still vital to have a bricks and mortar presence. The business started online in 2016 with a modern, easy to navigate shopping experience. It established its Front Street retail location three years later. “When we opened, the store was originally about half this size”, explains Andrea. “An opportunity then become available for us to expand in this same location, and we considered it important to do so, despite the Covid-19 pandemic”. Andrea says the philosophy behind the brand is to offer Bermuda’s best selection of curated ‘clean’ beauty, skincare, and lifestyle products, for women and men. “Our newly expanded store allows us to present our products in an elegant surrounding, to those clients who prefer a retail experience, where they can browse and try our

samples. And although we do deliver to homes and office, this also provides a location for in-store pick up for those who have placed online orders and chose to collect.” The store is characterised by its uncomplicated, yet sophisticated aesthetic. The back wall décor was created by local artist Adrienne Smatt, based on an idea from Andrea. The expanded store will also allow Salt+Cedar to increase the space dedicated to its refill station for soaps and other products. “We’re working to bring more sustainability around what we offer. Our shampoo bars are a good example of this – sourcing products that don’t use plastics” says Andrea. “We’re embracing a greener, gentler lifestyle.”

A

lthough occupied in early 2020, the new offices of captive insurance firm Nissan Global Reinsurance, Ltd. were not fully complete until 2021, due to delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and supply chain interruptions. “We had to wait to finish many of the details” says Sue Bendell, Design Director, Bendell Design. “The artwork, the Nissan branded wall, the frosted glass and other things — it took another year or so until we were able to finalise the project.” According to Michael Huff, President of Nissan Global Reinsurance, “this is the 12

global Nissan headquarters for consumer and corporate insurance steering and underwriting. When you walk into our office, we want you to be immersed in our Nissan culture. We have board meetings here, and welcome visitors from our other international offices, and it is important that they feel like they are in a Nissan office. If you go to other Nissan offices, it will have a similar look and feel.” One striking feature of the space is the automotive theme engrained in the flooring. The design is reflective of tire tracks and conveys the idea of the organisation constantly moving forward. =SYV 4ǽGI


SUPERIOR INTERIORS “The colour scheme in the office — the deep reds, whites and blacks — are all part of the Nissan branding. Our client also wanted to bring the beauty of Bermuda into the office,” says Ms. Bendell. “It made sense to do that by taking advantage of the natural light the space enjoys and use lots of glass, so that the entire office is bathed in sunlight, and everyone can enjoy the views, no matter where they sit. Light, bright, open, and minimal were our design principles — light in feel and scale as well.” “We’re a company that watches every penny,” says Mr. Huff. “We didn’t want to do anything too extravagant, but at the same time wanted to convey what the Nissan brand is all about.” Although a relatively small office designed to accommodate five staff — the

team is multi-national and comprises of 50% men and 50% women — it is roomy and very well appointed. It has a large boardroom equipped with a wall-to-wall digital touch screen TV, a full kitchen, and even a shower room for staff who like to cycle to work or go for a jog at lunchtimes. “Yes, it’s an office” says Mr. Huff, “but we want the staff to feel it’s also a home away from home.”

“T

he space is on a penthouse floor with 180-degree views of Hamilton Harbour,” says Akilah Swan, the project’s designer and manager. “It feels a little like being up in the clouds, so I combined a sleek industrial feel, with wood, cast iron and leather, with the softness of being up in the clouds, by keeping the colour palette in soft blues and greys with velvet accents.” The renovation created an office that is predominately open concept with glass fronts enclosing the two main offices, along with an additional fully enclosed office. There is also a lounge area facing the harbour, providing views when entering the space. “Because the view was a key factor, the lounge area was designed to be right off of the entry” Ms. Swan explains. “The second office was then placed next to the lounge for views to the harbour and

the open office. The kitchen was also refreshed with the layout adjusted for a more open feel and the countertops and cabinetry hardware updated.” Further reinforcing the notion of being in the sky was the client’s preference for the colour blue. Ms. Swan says a variety of blue tones were used to ground the lighter colours and strengthen the focal points in the space. “The walls are a soft whisper white blue, while the fully enclosed office and =SYV 4ǽGI

columns feature deeper, richer blues that anchor the lounge and kitchen areas. The lounge area has a custom painted ombre mural wall, a further nod to the feeling of being up in the air.” Other key design features sought to ensure a refined and sophisticated ambience, which Ms. Swan says bring to mind a high-end London flat. “Keeping with the sensibility of an apartment loft or flat, the artwork is framed, portrait style, triptych photos (a

set of works spread across three separate panels displayed side-by-side), instead of canvas,” she says. “The photos are by a Bermudian photographer living in London who captured iconic scenes from two of the three locations where the company is stationed — Bermuda and London. “For the furniture, I worked closely with the vendors to ensure that each detail carried that contrast of warm industrial against the soft, bright ambiance.” These details include wood veneer desks of River Cherry, chosen for the movement in the grain and depth of colour, with metal supports of brushed charcoal. The guest chairs in the offices and the sofa in the larger office are all distressed velvet with chrome legs. “In the lounge area a leather couch was chosen, bringing warmth to that central space and also to tie in with the office furniture,” continues Ms. Swan. “The couch also sits on brushed charcoal legs correlating with the iron, glass, and wood coffee table. Against the ombre wall is a large plush bench in a light grey with velvet navy cushions, bringing softness.” The project took about eight months to complete, partly due to supply chain disruptions from the Covid-19 pandemic. “The other challenge”, says Ms. Swan, “was the ombre mural which began as just an idea in my head.” “Fortunately, we were working with an excellent painter and artist who creates custom murals, and we were able to get the right balance and effect into that key piece.” Ms. Swan says the clients are very happy with the outcome, noting that they now prefer to come into the office rather than work from home. As a designer it is the ambiance created by the varying elements of the furniture and finish details that she says is most satisfying. “Every time I walk into the office, I pause for half a moment. It feels so calm and tranquil, the space really becomes an extension of the outdoor world around it - the sky, the water, and the city.”

W

hen a leading multi-national insurance organisation has offices in 120 different countries, creating a sense of place is a priority, alongside meeting the highest corporate standards and the latest office design elements. AON’s transition onto three floors of Point House saw the company move from a more traditional office space on Woodbourne Avenue into this new, state of the art trophy building. Working closely with AON’s real estate team in Chicago, and the firm’s local team in Bermuda, Darcy Robertson, Design Director at Commercial Interiors Group (CiG) has created a modern, state of the art workspace to match AON’s new surroundings. While a major renovation could have happened at their old space, the decision to have a purpose-built space for AON was made. Point House is known as premium office space, with floor to ceiling windows taking in the city and harbour views. It was therefore paramount to use the copious light and views to full affect when designing the different areas. Concepts included the ‘right to light’. This predicated an open work environment which only has three enclosed offices. All the meeting rooms, including the boardroom are glass, but double glazed for acoustic privacy. Sound proofing, acoustics and technology are paramount for AON. There are extensive sound masking techniques used everywhere, plus felt baffles, and the entire office is 90 percent wireless, allowing work from anywhere within the facility. Boardroom privacy is taken a step further with the use of electrified glass, which can go opaque should a meeting be sensitive. This large, bright room has views of the water, and Robertson has maximised the space while not compromising the light. He has done this by installing low window benches along the water side with small white tables, which blend in when not in use, but provide a considerable amount of extra seating and work space when needed. AON’s Bermuda office is home to more than 170 staff and all have sit-tostand workstations, and lockers to prevent desk clutter. There are private rooms and Loop phone booths if they need them. =SYV 4ǽGI

side of the building and enjoy city views. Not only are AON’s offices light and spacious, but they are designed to be welcoming and interesting as well, using eye-catching fixtures and bursts of colour. A large reception area leads to a client and employee arrival lounge featuring a large video wall, coffee bar area and business

Multiple ‘huddle spaces’ have been created on all three of the floors, which are designed to allow concentrative work and WebEx meetings. Centrally located on all three floors are cafés, which again have a variety of seating to suit get togethers, one-onone meetings, or just a quiet lunch or coffee alone. The ceiling here is open with a variety of different sized, striking, circular LED light fixtures, including one which is 154 inches in diameter and another that wraps around a column. A prominent felt wall greets people as they come out of the elevator on the fourth floor, and felt baffles, which pop up throughout the office space, improve the aesthetics and acoustics. To create the sense of place, many of the fixtures and much of the office décor has been inspired by Bermuda’s culture. This was achieved through the introduction of patterned textiles, stunning bright felt tiles, and biophilic elements. One significant inspiration was the traditional Bermuda kite. Kite geometry is evident throughout in lounge seating, logo wall, acoustic felt walls in meeting spaces, and the café backsplashes. The main colour palette is relatively neutral, but mixed with the Bermudathemed designs are occasional pops of stand-out colour including ‘AON red’ which has been used for the kite-inspired geometric red lines across the boardroom glass. Bermuda themes are also evident in the artwork and meeting room names, and each floor has a different subject. The fourth-floor client areas are named after the nine parishes, the third floor has spaces named after Bermuda’s sea creatures such as barracuda, sergeant major, and wahoo, and the second floor is Bermudian flora, including paw paw, loquat, and cedar. Large full wall graphics, which complement the themes, have been created for the different floors. It was important to AON that Bermuda’s heritage is tied into the design in a subtle way.

he move into the prestigious Point House, was a significant step in the evolution of Clarien Bank, which last year became the first in Bermuda to offer digital account opening. Clients may be pleasantly surprised as they are greeted on arrival by the ‘digital lounge’, which instantly announces that this is a modern, technology-driven organisation. The area is dominated by back-lit acrylic ATM towers with customised lighting, to the left of which are a series of iPads for digital banking customers to use. The ceilings are open and black, contrasting with brightly coloured and sculptured fixtures and light fittings, such as the Arktura Vapor Trail LED ceiling panels, which guide the way past a 4 x 3 video wall and into the client café. The ATMs need to be available 24/7 so a gate comes down after-hours allowing customers access to the cash machines, while the rest of the building is kept secure. Working with Clarien’s Chief Digital and Marketing Officer, Michael DeCouto, on the design were Commercial Interiors Group (CiG) Design Director, Darcy Robertson and Interior Designer Melinda DeCosta.

DeCosta was responsible for all the site administration during construction. Together, they were tasked to create a “differentiating, memorable and highly efficient client and work experience,” explains Robertson, adding that “we integrated the digital experience with traditional brick and mortar design to engage clients and employees. “While technology played an important role, the design brief also required a more client-friendly and modern banking experience with a contemporary residential feel.” The residential feel is most apparent in the client meeting areas, staff kitchen and collaboration spaces. A variety of comfortable but flexible seating has been used including booths, bar seating and high-backed chairs, all in muted tones and selective touches of Clarien’s colours. =SYV 4ǽGI

An orange acoustic wall panel from Turf sits behind welcoming sofas, and a crystal chandelier adds extra sparkle. “Rich colours of walnut wood tones with neutral supple leather seating,” add to the warm, homely feel, explains DeCosta, while the deep blues provide “a calming feel”. Textured blue carpet has been used throughout these places but elsewhere “the natural pattern of the ceramic tile connects the client to staff spaces,” she says. Clarien’s Point House location is home to around 90 employees based across two floors, and on the first floor is the large, statement reception desk, which incorporates the Clarien logo and has been designed to make an impact.

and floor-to-ceiling windows, the work stations, of which many are sit to stand, have been designed with low panels that provide seated privacy but also maintain open sightlines to all corners of the office. To keep the look and feel of the office clean and clutterfree, there is minimal storage at individual work stations but every staff member has use of a locker. Clients and staff still need privacy however, especially in a bank, and to this end Robertson and DeCosta incorporated closed glass areas for its brokerage business including iInvest and iTrade, and staff can use the Hush phone booths or focus rooms, which are designed with glass on two sides, so maintaining the visual all the way through, while being completely soundproof. “This space is designed to be cross-functional,” explains DeCouto. “If a client needs expert advice on matters ranging from asset management to lending or starting or expanding a commercial business, all the experts are available to them and they can go into a private area to have those conversations.” Being on the first floor of Point House, gives Clarien employees and their clients access to a large terrace with

spectacular Front Street views, and in the north-west corner of the office is a bright and light staff café, which includes a built-in window bar top, allowing staff to take in the city view while enjoying their break. Electronic and digital banking is the future and this is apparent throughout Clarien’s head office. Separately, working practices have changed dramatically in the last two years, so side-by-side with technical advancement are comfortable areas for staff and clients to meet and work. Together with CiG, Clarien, says Robertson, is “reinventing both the work environment and client experience.”

The offices also had to allow for smaller meetings. “For the hub space, the RA wanted this area to facilitate company gatherings, team meetings, and varying working styles. For those who prefer a standing desk or cafe style collaboration, this was accommodated through different zones within the hub.” Ms. Swan says that the staff of the RA is enjoying the space and overall design, and that, for her, the design element that stands out is the hub space. “Having all the various colourful elements tie together and really capture the heart of the teams who will use the space is the most satisfying part. “The client’s desire was to accommodate its growing staff while also retaining the atmosphere and culture of collaboration. The RA’s office culture is vibrant and supportive, and we’ve been sure to capture that energy and spirit in these new spaces.”

eoff Parker Architect recently completed a 4,200 sq. ft. interior renovation for The Regulatory Authority of Bermuda (RA) that not only expanded the organisation’s workspace but also emphasised the collaborative atmosphere that is an important aspect of its culture. Akilah Swan, the project’s designer and manager, says the entire process took approximately a year from concept to completion, and that the new space includes several private offices and open workstations. “The main feature is a collaboration hub and lounge located in the centre of the office, between the new renovation and the existing office area,” she says. The collaboration hub is highlighted by the custom designed feature walls, painted in bright pastels reminiscent of Bermuda’s natural colours, and the RA’s brand pallete found in their logo and other community messaging. It was designed to be a focal point of the hub area. “The brand message toward sustainable energy, communication and innovation was strongly represented in its brand colour palette and we took our cues from there,” says Ms. Swan. “By utilising the colours within the

furniture and in the two feature walls, we were able to bring that messaging in, but with a fun twist. We also designed for planting to be incorporated within the feature walls as a nod to the RA’s sustainable endeavours.” As a hub, the collaborative space needed to accommodate a variety of working styles and uses while still being welcoming, and encouraging communication, creativity, and innovation. In the centre of the room is a counter height table for eight stations with the ability to power technology. There are also cushioned benches, smaller round tables and a counter running along the back wall. Conveniently, a copier station sits in the hub along with a kitchenette and coffee station. A large glass panel wall, measuring 14 ft by 8 ft, allows light into the space while also giving it an open feel. A combination of carpet throughout and a wood look vinyl floor in the kitchen add to the clean and bright ambience. “The teams often collaborate between departments, and it was crucial that this energy was carried into the layout, as well as finishes for the spaces,” continues Ms. Swan. “The main requests were to have private offices for the RA senior members while keeping them open and visible.

t’s not every day you can go to your job and hang out with Jay-Z or The Beatles, but the employees of Lockton Re get their vibes when they are at work. Located on the third floor of 121 Front Street, Lockton Re’s new offices are infused with musical inspirations. Lockton Re’s operations executive, Vittoria Canale, says the look was created with guidance from the New York and Minnesota offices, which were also going through redesigns at the same time. Lockton Re adopted the desks and the boardroom table from the previous tenant. “Our goal was to find a place that already had some plugand-play features.” However, some of the existing furniture in the office was removed to create more space for each employee. Ms. Canale says the space was a blank canvas in which their imagination could run wild with inspiration. “In addition to our strong branding, we decided to do something different, so the office has a musical theme. Each of our six meeting rooms is named after an album, an artist, or makes a connection.” The first theme is Motown. “We’ve created a space that honors many of the Motown talents, and the renowned era.” Greats such as Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin dot the wall. 24

The Legend Room is a tribute to Bob Marley, with the focal point being a locally commissioned art piece. Legend is the title of a compilation album featuring the greatest hits of Bob Marley and The Wailers. David Bowie, who used to own a home in Bermuda, is featured in the Stardust Room. The corner office is named Blueprint, after an album by rapper Jay-Z. That office also features photos of the Executive Board for Lockton Re and essentially is a play on the title. Pet Sounds, another large corner conference room honours the Beach Boys. Promoted as “the most progressive pop album ever, Lockton Re is similarly gaining recognition for its ambitious and sophisticated production.” Finally, the largest board room is named Abbey Road, after The Beatles’ iconic album. The artwork paying tribute to the English rock band is featured over a four-piece canvas. A locally commissioned piece of artwork features inspirational lines from songs, such as, Diana said You Can’t Hurry Love; Glenn said Take It easy; John said All you Need is Love; Tina Said Don’t Rush the Good Things in Life. Of note is a frosted glass window with Jay-Z smoking a cigar. Ms. Canale laughs, “We wanted to give it an edgy approach,

something not typical and a talking point as we build our brand and expand the company’s culture on the island. Ms. Canale says it was essential to use local suppliers in setting up the office. “We really prided ourselves on going through local distributors with every opportunity we could in putting it together.” The operations executive says the most attractive part of the space was the

of this location is the meeting space. “In our business, we are constantly having face-to-face interactions and meeting with clients, which is slowly coming back into style again. The fact that we can host several meetings at the same time is essential to our business.” Ms. Canale says the location was also significant due to the “many corporate neighbours we have in the building that are relevant to our business. All of us who came together

to work for Lockton Re were used to being at the other end of town – in what I like to call the Olympic Village of reinsurance – so we wondered if this was going to work. But it really does.” “Funnily enough one of the

T

he brainchild of Parisian owner, Thomas Bekhazi and French baker, Vincent Hild, the star of the show at l’Artisan is, without doubt, the sight and smell of all the freshly made baked goods, and the space has been designed with this in mind. “We tried to keep it simple and let the food speak for itself,” explains Jason Makertich, a partner at BotelhoWood Architects who worked on the project with interior designer, Daria Schonenberg. Together they made the place light, bright, open and simple. “I wanted open plan, I wanted for people to be able to see what is happening in the bakery as things are getting done. Just to show the process. There are no shortcuts. We use the best products,” says Bekhazi. Instead of being closed away from the clientele, all the food preparation can be seen through a glazed viewing wall on the far side of the restaurant. “They can see 26

what’s going on and you can see where it comes out to the final front of house display area,” continues Makertich. The colour palette is neutral, with natural looking fixtures, fittings and lighting. The ceiling is open, but painted white to maximise volume, and carefully placed greenery provides contrast with the white and beige, while also defining certain spaces. Down one side of the huge windows is a green wall created using petrified moss, and rectangular planters containing vertical greenery have been strategically placed along the bottom of these windows. “These are quite architectural,” he explains. “They’re not really obscuring the views but they help soften the area. Planters have also been used to separate the outside seating area from the pavement. “The plant pots outside were key to create this outdoor space, sectioned off from the road,” he says. “They’re more of a visual to help curtail where the public walk”.

As you enter l’Artisan, you take a few steps up to a deliberately raised floor. The higher surface creates a terraced effect down to the outside seating area giving diners the feeling of being outside, but not at street level. Being part of a former bank building, presented some challenges in the design, in particular the almost 2-feet concrete vault walls, however Mackertich found a way to not just incorporate them into the overall design – the former vault now houses the bathrooms - but also make a feature of them. “I was adamant we keep the original Bank of Bermuda vault wall,” he says. “Behind that, when you go into the bathrooms, that’s the original bank vault. We were really keen to keep this as a nod to what the building’s history was.” The vault isn’t the only former bank feature that remains. In the kitchen area they have kept the original terrazzo floor, =SYV 4ǽGI


SUPERIOR INTERIORS regrinding and sealing it instead of retiling it, which saved the owners a considerable amount of money. “It’s 50 years old and has come up like new,” he says. While the delicious smell of freshly baked baguettes and pastries may help to draw in customers, this ‘side-effect’ isn’t ideal when you share a building with corporate tenants and a floor with Clarien Bank. Mackertich and the team had to very carefully plug up any gaps which tasty aromas could use to escape through and instead, they all come out of a single vent on the side of the building. All the cooking equipment was imported from France including a huge Bongard modular deck oven, which created quite a challenge given it didn’t even nearly fit through any doors. “It was a major piece of work,” says Mackertich adding that they had to remove one of the windows and break the oven down into three parts. “D&J did it. D&J were the contractor and they were a dream to work with.” In spite of the raised floor and steps to get into the restaurant through the main

door, l’Artisan is fully accessible through the main entrance of Point House, up the lift and in through the back entrance. Building tenants can also enter in through this way as well, avoiding the outside. In addition to the obvious design aspects that immediately catch your eye on entering l’Artisan, are more subtle features that, although small, make a big difference. No handles on storage cupboard doors and the clever use of a large mirror down a narrow corridor, create actual and perceived space, for example. When Bekhazi stands behind his

display counter he has a view not just of all his happy customers inside and out, but also down Par La Ville road as well. That, he says, is his favourite part.
