Dear Delegate, I am delighted to welcome you to the 5th International Banking and Finance Forum – restoring growth and confidence in world markets, which is being held as part of the International Festival for Business 2014. I am pleased that last year IBDE signed the official partnership with Liverpool Vision to support the IFB 2014. We have organised and delivered successfully a number of events that have helped many attendees to gain an update on challenges and opportunities into new markets, develop their international trade potential and maximise networking opportunities. But, our success at the IFB 2014 would have been impossible to achieve without the kind support of our partners and sponsors, to whom I wish to express my sincere gratitude. The today’s event is being held as part of IBDE’s international programme on restoring growth, trust and confidence in financial services. The past meetings in this series have been extremely useful in understanding more clearly the banking crises, which led to costly bank bailouts, bank failures and overall disruption in economic activity. Consequently, as most industry practitioners would agree, this crisis has greatly damaged public trust in banks and financial services. As was discussed at the forums in this series, the changes in the banking landscape coupled with banking crises, have focused policy makers’ and industry participants’ attention on the appropriate role and structure of banking supervision and regulation. The vulnerabilities exposed in the crisis affect banks and states globally while regulatory policy is organised along national boundaries – raising difficult policy coordination issues in the international regulatory field. Further, most advanced economies need to stimulate economic growth by offering better access to finance for SMEs. Despite the surge in peer-to-peer lending and crowd-funding, around 95% of SMEs are still financed by banks. Therefore, banks and finance should play a key role in effectively financing the so-called real economy and set the economic growth back on track. IBDE forums in this series will continue to encourage greater focus on best practice in banking and finance in the quest to restore confidence and growth in world markets and we look forward to working with all stakeholders. We are delighted to welcome such a diverse number of distinguished speakers who will be able to discuss these and other issues in more detail today. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions; so please feel free to participate in the debate. I wish to thank all our speakers for accepting our invitation and for taking the time to be with us today. Of course, I wish to thank our partners for supporting this event and in particular Liverpool Vision, City of London, Jersey Finance, BT Group, Bibby Financial Services, Bip and all other supporters, without whose support this event would have been impossible. Please feel free to contact us should you wish to find out more about the IBDE. You can find the summaries and reports of past IBDE activities at our website www.ibde.org. Please subscribe to our Newsletter, available for free, to receive regular invitations to IBDE events. You can also follow us on twitter @IBDE_News. And finally, please do visit the IFB HUB and make use of the venue for meetings and networking for free, following the forum. The IFB HUB offers an excellent networking lounge which you are welcome to use it tomorrow for B2B meetings.
