Snowmobiling
Spring
With trailheads east of Colville, northeast of Colville and east of Chewelah, you can sled for miles and miles in Eastern Washington. Parking at the Flodelle Creek Sno Park gives you access to over 138 miles of groomed trails, a warming hut and all of the Calispell Peak Trail System. Visit www.parks.wa.gov/winter/trails to find the maps necessary for the area. The third weekend in January each year is the Gold Rush Snowmobiling Fun Run sponsored by the Driftriders Snowmobile Club. Starting at Beaver Lodge Resort, about 24 miles east of Colville, the Fun Run brings in sleds from around the region.
Fishing
Spring explodes with a riot of color as plants pop new growth. Forest trails needs time to thaw but road biking and fishing seasons start!
Lake and stream fishing seasons usually begin towards the end of April, with some seasons open at other times (Fishing regulations and seasons can vary by lake and stream, so check the State’s website at wdfw.wa.gov/fishing or ask where you buy your license). Anglers ply Lake Roosevelt for walleye, trout and sturgeon, and two walleye tournaments are held at the Kettle Falls Marina each summer. Spokane River is known for walleye. Fly fishing on the Little Pend Oreille River and McDowell Lake on the LPO National Wildlife Refuge provide challenges for dedicated anglers. ADA accessible accessible fishing docks can be found at Potter’s Pond on the LPO National Wildlife Refuge and at Pierre Lake, Big Meadow Lake and Little Twin Lakes on the Colville National Forest. Colville is known as the Wild Turkey Capital of Washington because more turkeys are found in this region of the state than all the rest of the state together. Starting in April, residents are awakened to the sound of turkeys gobbling as they look for potential mates. Tom Turkeys, mostly of the Merriam subspecies, are hunted in the spring with the season lasting from April 15 to May 31. There is another season the first week of October. Wildlife biologists from the area agencies have put together a helpful online map of potential turkey hunting grounds which you can access at www.colvillechamberofcommerce.com. Watching Wildlife and Photographing Nature
For the best in Community Theatre & Performing arts, look no further than Woodlands Theatre in Kettle Falls.
Follow us on Facebook at Woodland Theatre Productions or website woodlandproductions.org or contact us at woodlandstp@gmail.com See you at the Theatre!
The high diversity of plants and animals in northeast Washington reflects the wide diversity of environments, all of which provide ample opportunities for photographers. More than 1,000 species of plants and 600 species of fungi (many edible but more are not!) have been documented. Nature enthusiasts come to observe the more than 90 species of butterflies or 60 species of dragonflies, several of which have only been found in this part of the state. The region is part of Audubon Society’s Palouse to Pines Loop Great Washington State Birding Trail and bird watchers delight in the potential to see many of the more than 300 species of birds that have been tallied. See numerous birds and maybe glimpse a moose during a trip to the Little Pend Oreille National Wildlife Refuge’s McDowell Marsh Environmental Education Trail with its handicapped access and 300-foot boardwalk to a photo blind at the marsh. 15
Seasonal Recreation
Summer
Summer brings warm days, cool nights and sunshine that lasts for 17 hours!
Hiking, Backpacking, Mountain and Road Riding, Horseback Riding As the snowline creeps up the mountains, more roads and trails open for you to explore on lands managed by the Colville National Forest, Washington Department of Natural Resources, and the Little Pend Oreille National Wildlife Refuge. Newashingtontrails.com contains maps to a wide variety of recreational routes. Northeast Washington provides a high variety and quality of road cycling routes rarely found in the U.S. Mountain panoramas, sculpted valleys and miles of lake and river views provide spectacular backdrops to your rides. No matter your level of biking, the area offers numerous routes from challenging climbs to fairly flat loops on lightly travelled country roads. This area is home to the longest mountain bike route in Washington State and if you are looking for heart-pounding climbs or downhill runs, or to just cruise around on unpaved forest roads you’ll find everything a mountain biker wants. It can be difficult to concentrate on the trail with so much spectacular scenery surrounding you! Throughout the area trailheads with horse trailer parking access trails that head into the mountains for day trips or longer. Jeep and ATV trails to the tops of Dominion and Radar Dome mountains provide panoramic views in all directions. Hiking Abercrombie Mountain tops you on the highest point in Stevens County at 7,308 feet and provides gorgeous vistas to Idaho and Canada. You can hike or ride all day and see few others on the trail. All native large mammal predators live in northeast Washington, so take standard safety precautions. House and Power Boating, Sailing, Water Skiing, Swimming, Canoeing, Kayaking, Wind Surfing, Rowing and Paddleboarding If you prefer water sports, Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area (Columbia/Kettle Rivers) on the western boundary of Stevens County provides miles of water for all water activities. Houseboats, available for rent, can be navigated down the lake and parked on any beach for days of fun. Visit nps.gov/laro for boat launches and beaches. Loon Lake, Waitts Lake, Deer Lake, Lake Spokane, and the Little Pend Oreille Lakes allow motors, water skiing and personal watercraft. On hot summer days, head out to one of the local beaches or float the Kettle River near Orient on a tube or raft. You can even go late in the afternoon, as living in the far north means long summer days. Geocaching, GPS and Orienteering and Huckleberry Picking You could spend your entire vacation geocaching the hundreds of sites in the county. Geocaching.com provides lists of sites in the area. Huckleberries provide a wonderful, tart-sweet flavor and locals keep secret their favorite places, so you have a very good friend if someone shares a location with you. Keep your GPS handy to find the location again! 16
Fall
As snow does not usually fall until November in most areas, this can be one of the best times to be outside for an adventure. The air is cooler, the insects fewer and the crowds even smaller than usual
Camping, Hiking, Mushroom Picking and Hunting
Camping, which is available from mid-April to the end of the year at both public and private campgrounds, is fun in the fall when the cool air makes sleeping bags feel really good. Unless it is an especially dry year, fires are allowed in fire pits at all campgrounds on public lands. There are campgrounds at most lakes, along Lake Roosevelt, and in the Colville National Forest. Fall turkey season is popular and then bear, moose and white tailed deer seasons attract hunters to Stevens County who want to fill up the freezer before the cold weather sets in. With the seasonal Pacific Coast weather an influence in our area, fall turns to rain and then snow and then the snowmobiles are out in force again!

U.S. Bicycle Route 10 is a scenic and popular cross-country route that starts in Anacortes, Washington, follows Hwy 20 for 315 miles to Colville, then continues east through the northern states to end after 4,244 miles in Bar Harbor, Maine. International Selkirk Loop with Flowery TrailLittle Pend Oreille Super Side Trip is the only multi-national scenic drive in North America! This 280mile drive tour, plus side trips, takes you through Washington, British Columbia and Idaho (Selkirkloop.org). You will encounter valleys filled by lakes or fields and towering mountains, some draped with glaciers. The Flowery Trail-Little Pend Oreille Super Side Trip highlights the pastoral Colville valley against the backdrop of dark green mountains. Every season provides wonderful views but autumn, when the larch and aspen trees show their fall colors and snow lies lightly on the mountaintops, is particularly enchanting. Little Pend Oreille National Wildlife Refuge covers 40,198 acres and is one of the few forested National Wildlife Refuges. The 11-mile Auto Tour, open April 15 through December 31, starts at the refuge headquarters and sports 12 interpretive signs that cover wildlife, homesteaders, land use and railroads (Fws.gov/ refuge/Little_Pend_Oreille/). The Pacific Northwest National Scenic Trail crosses the northern part of the county. This hiking trail begins at the Continental Divide in Glacier National Park and travels west over 1,200 miles before reaching the Pacific Ocean near Cape Alava, Washington (pnt.org). Unlike most Scenic Trails it crosses rather than follows mountain ranges.
Gardner Cave, a 1,055-foot cavern near Metaline in Pend Oreille County, is accessed by an easy hike. Join a Crawford State Park Ranger for a fascinating tour with a touch of geological humor. Open May to September (parks.state.wa.us/492/Crawford). The Colville National Forest (fs.usda.gov/colville) provides more than 1 million acres of recreation opportunities in the front and back country and on lakes. Within its boundary lies part of the 41,335-acre Salmo-Priest Wilderness in northeastern Pend Oreille County, which beckons hikers and horse riders to traverse old-growth cedar and hemlock forest and cross treeless, alpine ridges. Sherman Pass Scenic Byway starts in Kettle Falls, crosses the highest pass in the state (5,575 feet) and ends in Republic. Stop to view interpretive signs at Log Flume, Camp Growden, and White Mountain and access hiking areas, including the Kettle Crest at Sherman Pass. Stonerose Fossil Site and Interpretive Center in Republic is one of the top five Eocene fossil sites in the world, where you can find and keep your own fossils of plants, insects and fish that lived about 50 million years ago! The site is open daily from May 31 to September 5 and Wednesday through Sunday September 8 to October 31 (stonerosefossil.org)

Colville National Forest: Hunters claim this 1.1 million acre forest features the best hunting in the state. Officials say that roughly 60,000 of the state’s estimated 90,000 white-tail deer live in the territory. Elk and moose are also seen along with bighorn sheep in the Sullivan Lake District. Families gather here to enjoy the 486 miles of hiking trails. Horseback riding is one of the most popular warm weather activities, especially along Sherman Pass. That’s because winding trails and spectacular scenery provide a beautiful backdrop. Forest officials have designated many paths like the Kettle Crest Trail specifically for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding. A British Columbia mountain biking club known as the Six Packs ranks the Kettle Crest Trail as the best in the world. According to their expertise, the mountain experience more than pays back the energy the biker invests in the challenging trip. Go to www.fs.fed.us/r6/colville for more trail information. Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area: This unit of the National Park Service was created in 1941 when the Bureau of Reclamation built the Grand Coulee Dam on the Columbia River. At 150 miles long, it is one of the largest lakes in the area, making it ideal for motor boating, water skiing, canoeing, kayaking, wind surfing, sailing, swimming and fishing. A walleye fishing tournament is held in June. Washington state licenses are required when hunting and fishing at Lake Roosevelt. Spokane and Colville Confederated Tribal Lands border some of the lake and have their own regulations. There are 22 public boat launches on the lake as well as 28 year-round campgrounds, some only accessible by boat. Lake Roosevelt NRA 316 Kettle Park Rd. Kettle Falls, WA 99141 18

Support Our Farmers!
Business and Industry The modest cost of living and unmatched quality of life attracts a variety of businesses, which make the Colville area their headquarters. The lumber industry is a natural partner, which is why Vaagen Bros. Lumber, Inc. celebrates more than 65 years of providing employment opportunities in their mill and in private contract timber harvesting. Vaagen Bros. Lumber, Colville’s very own local saw mill, is a third generation family-owned entity that began in 1952. Today, Vaagen Bros. leads the timber industry in maximizing the use of every tree that is harvested and in producing the highest value by-products from the harvested trees. The company is also the leading timber industry in working with environmental organizations and the local communities to find workable solutions to natural resource management problems. Boise Cascade Company is one of the largest producers of engineered wood products and plywood in North America and a leading U.S. wholesale distributor of building products. Boise Cascade is a public company traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol BCC and headquartered in Boise, Idaho. Visit Boise Cascade’s website at www.bc.com.
Boise Cascade operates three facilities in Northeastern Washingtona plywood plant, a small log mill and a large log mill. These facilities employ approximately 400 employees. Boise Cascade began operating in Northeastern Washington in 1960. Boise Cascade Company and its employees are committed to their core values of integrity, safety, respect, and the pursuit of excellence. Colville’s recreational nature makes it a good fit for companies associated with the outdoors. That’s why Hewes Marine Company, a family-owned manufacturer of Hewescraft aluminum boats, has operated here for 65 years. Other industries also are eager to participate in our growth. Colmac Coil Manufacturing continues to increase business with new international contracts in the heat transfer product market from this base. Agribusiness also plays a large role in Stevens County, with family farms raising cattle, sheep, hogs, chickens, dairy, wheat and alfalfa. A mobile poultry processing unit allows chickens to go right from the farm to the table. Large Farmers Markets are held each Saturday and Wednesday in Colville, Friday in Chewelah and on Saturday in Lake Spokane. Stevens County leans heavily on the state’s work training programs to give both its employees and employers a leg up on the competition. We also tap into Washington’s Work Source, a one-stop source that matches skilled workers to companies needing specific qualifications.

Visit their website at www.providence.org/locations/ wa/dominicare. It can be hard to find and fix a problem if you can’t see it clearly. Fortunately, when it comes to possible problems inside the body, doctors are now using some advanced tools to focus on exactly what they need to see. One of the cutting-edge diagnostic tools is the 64-slice computed tomography (CT) scanner. Providence Mount Carmel Hospital is fortunate to have this advanced equipment in house. The scanners use special x-ray equipment to take multiple pictures—or slices—of internal structures, such as organs, bones and blood vessels. A computer program then combines all of these slices into detailed, cross-sectional views. Providing much more information, their thinner slices are recorded more quickly, leading to images with even more detail. These machines are so fast they can record motion-free images of a beating heart and the blood vessels that feed it. These advanced CT scanners allow cardiologists to gauge the buildup of dangerous plaque in the arteries without the need for an invasive coronary angiogram. A 64-slice CT scan can also quickly and accurately show whether or not someone who is experiencing chest pain is having a heart attack. CT scans are also used: • To study all types of tissues in the chest and abdomen. • To find cancers, such as those in the lungs, liver and pancreas. • To detect spinal problems and other skeletal injuries, since even the smallest bones and nearby tissues can be seen. • To locate vascular diseases that can lead to stroke or kidney failure. Your doctor might order a CT exam for any number of reasons. For example, it might be used to help guide a biopsy, to plan a surgical procedure or to measure bone density. A CT scan can also quickly spot injuries to internal organs after an accident or more precisely target radiation treatments. In addition to the above-mentioned exams, Providence Mount Carmel Hospital has the ability to perform ER/trauma exams much faster and gather more information. Special exams, such as 3D, cardiac, vascular and pulmonary can also be performed.
