The Royal Garden Hotel, 2-24 Kensington High Street, London W8 4PT

WELCOME TO iCAAD LONDON 2018. We’re delighted to be holding this year’s flagship conference once again at the Royal Garden Hotel, and to be welcoming our 2018 delegates, sponsors, partners, exhibitors and speakers. The diversity of topics and expertise gathering at this conference is breathtaking. Among many other interwoven themes, in the midst of the opiate epidemic we’ll be exploring alternatives in chronic pain management, discussing policy change with the most influential action groups in the country and highlighting solutions and innovations to promote better detection, intervention and treatment of opioid addiction, and the potential that criminal justice diversion has to aid the process. We’ll be examining issues from substance misuse to behavioural compulsions ranging from excessive screen watching, gaming and social media, to boundaries and labelling within sex and lifestyle choices as well as how to work affirmatively with GSRD individuals Continuing our pledge to include humanitarian issues at all our conferences; this year we are addressing modern slavery, human trafficking, and possible resolution from natural or manmade catastrophic trauma. The portrayal of mental health professionals and addiction in the movies will feature and we will be holding a mini Recovery Street Film Festival and screening “The Circle,” a film about how a combination of yoga and 12 Step recovery is being used to help addicted street children in India. We’ll be looking at music therapy, sensory motor psychotherapy, working with addicted artists and musicians. We will study somatic therapy, dealing with compassion fatigue, using decisional analysis in business, the principles of ethics and economics, and understanding gender issues in treatment settings, as well as the ever-important role of recovery coaching in bridging the gap between treatment and life. There’s much more, as you will soon discover, and we hope you’ll join in the conversation with us. Throughout the event, between the enlightening, educational, harrowing, touching and motivating presentations, panels and workshops, we will connect, re-connect and form new bonds, furthering advancement in the fields of behavioural, emotional and mental health. As we continue the international dialogue over these three days and beyond, we will align all that we know and work together towards achieving our common goals. Enjoy the conference!

DR NEIL BRENER, DR GILL MACLEOD AND DAVID SMALLWOOD

ADDICTION IN THE WORKPLACE - “OUT OF THE SHADOWS” The first question is what is the City and why is it so important. The City is much more than just Bankers. It is a complete ecosystem from the mail room to the CEO and all in between. It is a community as much as a workplace, with rules and special cultural traits. There are of course many support systems that make it work. But, this session will look specifically at three fundamental questions that are pertinent to working in the city: • Is there a specific addiction problem in the City? • Is addiction any different in City workers? • In a post Brexit City what will happen to the treatment of addiction and other mental health problems? Having collectively worked in the City for over twenty years the panel will attempt to answer these questions. The session will look at treatment and the changing attitudes to addiction and mental health in the City. Dr Neil Brener Dr Brener is a Consultant Psychiatrist at The Priory Hospital North London where he has been intrinsic in the development of the Addiction Treatment Programme since 1997. He has a private practice in Harley Street, the City and Canary Wharf, London. He presents regularly both in the UK and internationally on the treatment of addictions, anxiety and depression. Dr Brener has dedicated his career to the understanding and treatment of mental health issues and specialises in how addictions and co-existing disorders need to be treated concurrently. He appears on television news programmes, documentaries and audience discussion shows as well as regularly contributing articles to the national press. Dr Gill Macleod Dr Gill MacLeod is HCA ED of Primary care and CEO of Roodlane Medical. She has worked in the City for the last 25 years. She is a member of the Royal College of Physicians, a practicing Occupational Health Physician, a GP and an experienced presenter and trainer. She has led the organisation in providing innovative health services to blue chip corporates and creating a vibrant healthcare business with a client list which includes some of the best known names in the business world. Roodlane’s services are accessed across 15 sites and 20 in-house clinics in London, the South East and Scotland; delivering 120,000 GP consultations, 45,000 health screens, 31,000 physiotherapy sessions, 20,500 OH consultations annually and with a rapidly growing psychological services division which has tripled in size as we have developed key emotional wellbeing services with our clients. David Smallwood David has been a therapist and counsellor for 20 years. He holds a Master’s degree in addiction counselling and psychology and a post graduate diploma in therapeutic counselling. As well as a diploma in counselling for addictive disorders. His specialist areas of interest are addiction, gay and lesbian, and any childhood trauma leading to anxiety and depression. He has trained in EMDR (eye movement desensitising and re-processing), PIT training with Pia Mellody at the Meadows, in Arizona (Co-Dependence and family of origin) in intervention (for addictive problems). DR COSMO DUFF GORDON

FROM THE DRUNKARD TO THE ALCOHOLIC, VIA THE MONOMANIAC, INEBRIATE AND DEGENERATE: THE DISCOURSES OF DRUNKENNESS THAT INFORMED THE BIRTH OF ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS. In this fascinating presentation, Dr Cosmo Duff Gordon will deliver a history of the main Western discourses of drunkenness, monomania, inebriety, degeneracy and alcoholism, as they evolved from c. 1300 – 1935. This will be presented as a Foucauldian discourse analytic reading of how they have informed and shaped AA discourse. Particular regard will be given to the documented tension between expert (medical/psychological) and non-expert (mutual help) models of addiction and recovery. Delegates attending this session will: 1) better understand the historical background to models of addiction. 2) develop a better insight into the 12-Step treatment model. 3) have a new understanding of tensions between expert and non-expert models of addiction and recovery. Dr Cosmo Duff Gordon Cosmo is a chartered psychologist and addictions treatment specialist. He has worked in the addictions field since 2005. In 2010, Cosmo founded Start2Stop. This pioneered a cutting-edge 100 day outpatient treatment programme for professionals. In 2012, he opened Mews House, London’s only provider of residential secondary and tertiary treatment. Cosmo is passionate about long-term continua of care in the community. As an educator, he has trained social workers in addictions counselling, trained counselling teams, presented to the BPS conference and lectured on addiction at various universities in the UK and South Africa. He is a co-author of ‘Recovery RSA’ (2011), a guidebook to recovery from addiction.

PROFESSOR LARRY PHILLIPS

IMPROVING THE COST-EFFECTIVENESS OF ADDICTION TREATMENT CENTRES. All addiction treatment centres face the challenge of allocating resources across budget areas to obtain best value for money. This requires a clear sense of priorities that balance costs, risks and benefits, where benefits can be any mixture of financial and non-financial value. But how can monetary costs, uncertainty about the future and multiple, conflicting objectives be ‘balanced’ when they are all very different? The answer is to be found in multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA), a theoretically sound, highly practical, and well-tested approach that uses both data and human judgement to carry out this balancing act. After a brief introduction to the principles of MCDA, Professor Larry Phillips will facilitate a small group of addiction experts in a decision conference to develop a prioritisation for allocating resources across budget areas of a hypothetical treatment centre. The session will end with a discussion of how this process could be implemented. Professor Larry Phillips Larry is Emeritus Professor and Director of the Decision Capability Group. He specialises in helping decision makers to analyse complex issues involving uncertainty, risk, and multiple, conflicting objectives. He often works with groups of key players using a problem-solving process called decision conferencing. Larry’s recent research describes the harms from the misuse of psychoactive drugs, opioids and nicotine. His research for the European Medicines Agency and the European Community’s IMI-PROTECT project, established the feasibility and desirability of creating explicit, quantitative models of the benefit-risk of prescription drugs. Larry is now exploring ways to apply that research for the betterment of individual and public health.

PROFESSOR WULF RÖSSLER

PSYCHIATRY IN THE MOVIES - MIRRORING SOCIETAL TRENDS Movies are simultaneously an art form and a potent form of mass communication. The film industry exploits psychiatric topics from addiction to eating disorders and psychopathy. As such, it has a significant influence on public perception in particular as many people are poorly informed about mental disorders and the problems people with mental disorders are facing. The Mentally ill are often described as dangerous and unpredictable while mental health professionals are depicted as aloof, authoritarian and manipulative. Movies have become an integral part and pervasive element of our culture reflecting superordinate topics of our societies. As such, movies transport (subconscious) messages, stereotypes and myths concerning societal and individual values. Movies do not simply reflect environment but offer interpretations of social reality. This will be exemplified on the basis of several movies. The goal of this presentation is to become aware of the inherent power of movies for our daily therapeutic practice with our patients. Professor Wulf Rössler Wulf Rössler studied Medicine (1969-1975) and Psychology (1976-1981) at the University of Heidelberg and ended his studies with a medical degree (MD) and a psychological degree (MSc). He is a trained psychiatrist with further specialisations in Social Medicine and Rehabilitation. He is currently Professor at the Universities of Sao Paulo and the Charité in Berlin. His research is focused on services research and psychiatric epidemiology. He has about 750 publications and 450 entries in PubMed. He published numerous textbooks. From 2015-17 he was Medical Director of the Kusnacht Practice in Zurich and is now a member of the Board. The Kusnacht Practice is an outpatient facility for international clients with substance use disorders.

DR DON GRANT

UNPLUG TO RECONNECT: HEALTHY DEVICE MANAGEMENT & THE PRACTICE OF GOOD DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP. Millennial technology proffers previously unimaginable opportunities which have forever changed much of our daily lives. Conversely, technology and devices have also become the newest and most potentially dangerous “drugs of choice”. Those struggling with anxiety, depression and other mental, emotional or behavioural issues seem to be at an even greater risk for technology “addiction”. Recent research has indicated that it can lower relationship and life satisfaction in couples. Similarly, adolescents who struggled with device management had lower levels of self esteem and were more likely to manifest social anxiety disorders. Dr. Grant will explore this newest nemesis currently growing to seemingly pandemic global proportions, illustrating both the positive and potentially negative effects of technology, and offer strategies and skills to help promote healthy device management and to practice good “Digital Citizenship.” Dr Don Grant Don received the 2015 American Psychological Association “Early Career Achievement Award”. In 2012 he won an international “Best of Show” prize in London for his addiction recovery research work. He’s been a keynote speaker and presenter at many conferences, including: the 2017 American Psychological Convention (Washington D.C.), the 2017 Advance L.A./Help Group Conference, “13 Reasons Why... ONE Reason Why Not” Panel Discussion, and the 2017 CiR Addiction & Mental Health Symposium at UCLA, among others. Dr. Grant is the Founder/CEO of “(un) BOOT CAMP” and Executive Director of “Resolutions Teen Center” in Los Angeles.

ROKELLE LERNER

EMOTIONAL SOBRIETY: THE UNDISCOVERED FRONTIER IN HEALING RELATIONSHIPS. In order to move from reactivity to integrity in relationships, recovering addicts/alcoholics need to remain connected to their courage, truth and power without being consumed by another. Although many attend 12 Step meetings, the concepts of the 12 Steps do not translate to their personal relationships. This workshop will provide a different perspective about how we allow ourselves to become pulled away from our sense of self instead of allowing the ‘best’ of ourselves to come to forward in relationships. Drawing on the work of Gottman, Schnarch, Perel and others, this lecture will move beyond the description of the problem and show a new paradigm of relational recovery. Rokelle will identify the myths of relational recovery and demonstrate specific tools that will enhance differentiation, self-esteem and integrity in relationships. It will discuss how intergenerational attachment patterns are re-enacted in adult relationships and what skills are needed to interrupt destructive patterns, as well as demonstrating the use of mindfulness in couple’s therapy. Rokelle Lerner A pioneer in the development of cutting edge treatment for children and adult children of alcoholics and a renowned author and lecturer in the field of addiction and relationship issues. She has trained counsellors, psychologists, teachers and social workers throughout the world in healing the family from the ravages of addiction. Rokelle is the Senior Clinical Advisor for Crossroads Recovery Center in Antigua. She has received numerous awards for work including the National Association for Children of Alcoholic’s Lifetime Achievement Award and Esquire magazine’s ‘Top 100 Women in the US Who are Changing the Nation’. She’s appeared on Oprah, Good Morning America and 20/20.

MARK DRAX

RECOVERY COACHING: BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN TREATMENT & LIFE. There are 168 hours in a week: what does an addict in early recovery do to maintain sobriety and emotional connection during the 167 hours not spent in the company of a therapist? ‘AA’ started in the US in 1935: since then and thanks to advances in neuroscience among many other things, we now know that just saying ‘Stop It’ is not enough. Addicts need support; to get into recovery, to learn what recovery is all about and then to learn to live in recovery for the rest of their lives. Treatment centres are safe environments when compared to the emotional challenges that await people returning to life whilst trying to apply what they have learned in a manner to ensure safety and growth. The big challenge is to bridge the gap between leaving treatment and living a heathy life. Who else, apart from therapists, can help clients progress through those other 167 hours each week- well trained, empathic Recovery Coaches. Mark Drax Mark is an Addiction Recovery Coach and strong advocate for the importance of ‘aftercare’. He has turned his own experience with early trauma and sex addiction into a coaching practice specifically aimed at helping people apply recovery tools in a realistic and sustainable manner. Comfortable with and open about his struggles, he’ll share his recovery views having ‘been there and done it’. He’ll talk about the emergence of coaching and how he provides support that was not on offer when he left treatment 14 years ago, quite literally ‘bridging the gap between treatment and life’. He will explore the benefits of coaches collaborating with the therapeutic community and their ever-growing recovery role. And he will explore the tools he uses to help clients make change in their lives, to move through and beyond buried anger, fear and shame to replace addictive behaviours with much healthier pursuits.

DR SHERI JACOBSON

THE IMPACT OF DIGITAL INNOVATION ON CLINICAL PRACTICE. Industries the world over are being disrupted by new technologies. The health care sector is no exception. From a proliferation of on-demand digital mediums for accessing and delivering treatment, to the growing use of e-payments, algorithms and AR, the clinical experience of patients and practitioners is changing. This presentation aims to stir your thoughts about the effects of digital developments on clinical practice and business. The session will consider a holistic approach to working in conjunction with new technologies whilst upholding clinical and ethical standards. It will explore the changes to the way that patients can access mental health services, the effects of ‘choose and book’ services of online marketplaces, the algorithms that power them and the security risks to storing sensitive data. Whilst increased patient choice has its merits, this workshop will explore to what extent this could diminish the quality of the therapeutic relationship, the efficacy of these models and what role AR (augmented reality) might play in the future. Dr Sheri Jacobson With ten years of training in Psychotherapy and fifteen years seeing patients, Dr Sheri Jacobson turned her private practice into a thriving business of London therapy clinics, harnessing the latest digital software. In her belief that technology could democratise access to therapy she set about building an online marketplace (HarleyTherapy.com) and a practice management app for therapists committed to raising standards of therapy. With algorithms and machine learning powering a better client experience, and data driving better service delivery, she is helping to revolutionise the counselling space. She regularly speaks on TV, radio, within organisations and to students about emotional wellbeing, technology and living in the age of a digital revolution.

SPOTLIGHT PRESENTATION DR PETER LEVINE AND DR KURT MOSETTER

UNDERSTANDING THE ROOTS OF ADDICTION - MODERN TREATMENT CONCEPTS: NUTRITIONAL COUNSELLING, NEUROMUSCULAR REGULATION WITH MYOREFLEX-THERAPY Dr Mosetter will lead this presentation introducing Myroreflex Therapy (MRT), a regulation therapy that for historical and efficiency reasons takes its starting point in pressing at muscles attachments – thereby influencing the tensegrity in the myofascial system both locally, but first and foremost globally, in the body. Experience shows that traumatic experiences are kept and take effect in neuromuscular pathways, which are not accessible to the explicit memory. By applying neuro-muscular pressure point stimulation which in succession provokes self-regulation of maladaptive body schemes, it is possible to restore a healthy sense of one’s own body and re-establish neuromuscular balance in the brain and in the body, implicit and explicit memories become resynchronized – so psychotherapeutic measures can take hold more effectively. Dr Peter Levine, author of Waking the Tiger, Healing Trauma, and Trauma and Memory, will join via satellite to emphasise how ‘Somatic Experiencing’ addresses physical and emotional trauma, PTSD, and stress related conditions, developed by Dr Levine over 40 years. Together they will deliver on how these treatments can facilitate the completion of self-protective motor responses and the release of thwarted survival energy bound in the body, thus addressing the root cause of trauma symptoms. This is approached by gently guiding clients to develop increasing tolerance for difficult bodily sensations and suppressed emotions. Learning objectives: 1. To build a constructive work alliance in which the therapist absolutely respects the strategies of trauma compensation and does not tackle it too early. 2. To identify the roots of addiction and their trauma counterpart in the body. 3. How to start a body treatment without overstraining the person. 4. Understanding and supporting self-regulation and how the ‘why’ in addiction self-regulation is failing. Dr Peter Levine Dr Peter A. Levine, Ph.D. is the originator and developer of Somatic Experiencing® and the Director of The Somatic Experiencing Trauma Institute. LOST SHEEP - A MEDITATION ON ADDICTION: A SHORT FILM BY SOPHIE MOLINS 1.10PM – 1.50PM VICTORIA SUITE

Imagine if everything serves a purpose and has a reason for being. For instance jealousy evolved as an instinct to protect your territory and your mate. Imagine if addiction serves a purpose and is trying to tell us something about others, our culture and ourselves. Playing with this question, Lost Sheep is an exploration of addiction that leaves thoughts suspended to return to and puzzle over Nurture? Nature? Dopamine? Brain chemistry? Creativity? Death drive? Un-ravelled, addiction is a story about relationships, identity, meaning, the human condition and our society; a sensory journey through love and attachment, which seeks to challenge binary and two dimensional ways in which we view life and create stereotypes. Do we have choices? Is the addict the lost sheep or is our society quite lost? The film considers the representation, position, roles and expectations assigned to the addict - roles and expectations which are often deeply negative.

COMPASSION FATIGUE AND PROVIDER RESILIENCE Compassion fatigue is the normal physiological and emotional reaction to hearing about another person’s trauma. This exhaustion creates a limited ability to empathise with others in both our personal and professional lives. In the world of substance use disorders, we often see it in our colleagues before we see it in ourselves. This interactive workshop will create ways to care for ourselves while still caring for others and develop action plans for self-care and compassion. Jaime Vinck Jaime Vinck, MC, LPC, NCC, CEIP, joined Sierra Tucson in 2014 as Chief Clinical Officer and oversaw all clinical services. In 2015, Jaime was promoted to Chief Operations Officer, where she led several strategic operational initiatives and spoke nationally on topics such as Compassion Fatigue and Provider Resilience, The Mature Adult Treatment Experience and The Importance of Collaboration when Treating Co-occurring Disorders. In December of 2017, Jaime was promoted to Chief Executive Officer. Prior to joining Sierra Tucson, Jaime held leadership positions with Journey Healing Centers and maintained a successful private practice in Scottsdale, AZ. Prior to entering behavioral health, Jaime had a successful career in Human Resource Management in the Automotive and Wireless Communication industries. Jaime has Bachelors Degree in Employee Relations from Michigan State University, a Masters in Counseling from Ottawa University, and is enrolled in the Doctor of Behavioral Health Program at Arizona State University.

SPIRITUAL CULTURE, WISDOM AND PRACTICE: INCORPORATING THE SACRED INTO CONTEMPORARY MODELS OF TREATMENT Rev Abel leads an integrated spiritual care team for Caron Treatment Centers and speaks for Caron on spirituality in addiction and other behavioural health care. He is an ordained minister in good standing in the United Church of Christ and a summa cum laude graduate of Wesley Theological Seminary. A separate engagement with spiritual background, sources of authority, and methods or “spiritual practice” is a luxury few treatment providers can afford. When present, it is often partial, adjunct, or secondary. But, human beings are shaped by their cultural and communal experiences, including story and heritage. How does one assess the relevance of cultural/religion/spirituality? How does one identify sources of spiritual authority for a client or family system? What are the categories and varieties of spiritual practice that are most helpful and readily integrated in addiction care, and how can they be adapted to fit particular context and needs? This session will explore each of these questions and more. Rev Jack Abel Rev Abel leads Caron’s integrated spiritual care team and speaks for Caron on spirituality in addiction and other behavioural health care. He is an ordained minister in good standing in the United Church of Christ and a summa cum laude graduate of Wesley Theological Seminary. Jack also pursued advanced studies at Catholic University and The New Seminary, and previously served as an endorsed substance abuse chaplain and pastor in the United Methodist Church. DR GORDON MORSE, DR CHRIS FORD, NIAMH EASTWOOD, ANN FORDHAM AND NAOMI BURKE-SHYNE GLOBAL DRUG POLICY UTOPIA – GROUNDED IN THE PRINCIPLES OF HUMAN RIGHTS, NOT MORAL PANIC The attempt to control drug use and harms through punitive sanctions (i.e. the war on drugs) has been a global failure. In fact, in many cases it has intensified the problem, leading to soaring prison populations, and disproportionately pulling poor, vulnerable or minority communities into the dragnet of the criminal justice system. Negative perceptions and fears of the general public, reinforced by negative media portrayals, have made drugs and people who use them an ‘easy target’ for politicians and other elected officials who want to curry favour with their voters. In this impassioned panel discussion, leading activists from the most influential groups will explain the reasons such failure was predictable and illustrate how decriminalisation policies (as pursued in other countries such as Portugal and the Netherlands etc) offer a rational and more humane way forward, that also have huge economic and research gains for society.

Dr Gordon Morse Gordon’s past appointments include being a single handed GP principal, Medical Consultant, and Clinical Lead for Drug and Alcohol services. He has been closely involved with the RCGP Substance Misuse Training Unit since 1995 and co-wrote some of its course materials. He has published numerous articles and served on the NTAs National Expert Advisory Group on Recovery Orientated Drug Treatment in 2013. His real sphere of expertise is fly fishing.

Dr Chris Ford Chris recently retired from General Practice in London where she worked for nearly 30 years. During this time she developed a special interest in working with people who use drugs and/ or alcohol many with HIV and/or hepatitis. Increasingly concerned about the gap between practice and policy, Chris and others founded Substance Misuse Management in General Practice (SMMGP), which is a successful UK network of supporting doctors and other health professionals working with people who have drug problems. In 2009 Chris set up International Doctors for Healthier Drug Policies (IDHDP) to increase the international participation of medical doctors in drug policy. Niamh Eastwood Niamh is Executive Director of Release. She is a non-practising barrister who started at Release in 2002 as a legal advisor. She has extensive experience of service delivery, policy strategy, fundraising and operational development. Having worked in drug policy for the last ten years Niamh is passionate about drug policy reform and believes that the most vulnerable in society are disproportionately impacted upon by the current drug laws. Niamh has coauthored Release’s two most recent policy papers ‘The Numbers in Black and White: Ethnic Disparities In The Policing and Prosecution Of Drug Offences In England and Wales’ and ‘A Quiet Revolution: Drug Decriminalisation Policies in Practice Across the Globe’. She has also co-authored and edited a number of Release’s advice booklets including ‘Drugs and the Law’ and ‘Sex Workers and the Law’. She has presented at international and national conferences and is regularly invited to comment in the media. Ann Fordham Ann Fordham directs the work of IDPC, leading on the coordination and development of the network. Ann was appointed as Executive Director in 2011. She joined IDPC in 2008 as the first coordinator of the network and in that time has grown the network from 32 to more than 140 organisations. Ann leads on international advocacy efforts on drug policy and human rights, specifically calling for reform of laws and policies that have proven ineffective in reducing the scale of the drug market and have negatively impacted vulnerable population groups such as people who use drugs and growers of illicit crops. She represents IDPC at international events and works with policy makers and civil society partners around the world to review and shape drug control policies towards more humane, effective approaches that are based in principles of human rights and public health. Naomi Burke-Shyne Naomi joined Harm Reduction International as Deputy Director in October 2017 and brings more than ten years of international experience at the intersection of harm reduction, HIV and human rights. From 2014-2017, Naomi worked for the Open Society Foundations’ Public Health Program, leading a portfolio of funding and policy engagement that supported civil society to challenge the negative impact of drug policy on access to controlled medicines, and strengthen access to justice for people who use drugs. Between 2009 and 2014, Naomi worked in a regional capacity for the HIV and Health Law Program at the International Development Law Organization (IDLO); posted in Jakarta, Kathmandu, then Kampala.

PAUL SUNDERLAND

LOVE ADDICTION, CO-DEPENDENCY AND DEVELOPMENTAL TRAUMA – THE PRESENTING PAST Love addiction presents as a hunger to achieve or avoid attachment at any cost. It appears to act out a painful past, fuelled by a fantasy of perfect care and repeating familiar patterns of loss. It is a relational process addiction backed up by codependency and born often of developmental trauma. Increasingly we are treating patients with complex problems and needs. We are approaching addiction in layers addressing addictions of ingestion followed by addictions of process, co-dependency and trauma. This presentation will discuss love addiction and its symptoms; present co-dependency as a dysfunctional attempt to manage anxiety in relationships, and consider a range of adverse childhood experiences that are over represented in addiction treatment and recovery programmes. The talk aims to stimulate thought and awareness, suggesting ways in which clients who identify with these conditions might recover. Paul Sunderland Paul Sunderland is an addictions psychotherapist, consultant and trainer with over 30 years of experience in the treatment of addictions. He is Executive Director of Outcome Consulting and Clinical Director of The Outcome Process. He has previously held the posts of Head of Treatment at Clouds House in Wiltshire and Clinical Director at Crossroads Centre, Antigua. HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT: WORKING WITH VICTIMS OF HUMAN TRAFFICKING The International Labour Organization estimates that there are 20.9 million victims of human trafficking globally. Every country in the world is impacted by human trafficking and communities across the globe are changed forever as humans are sold into slavery, sexually exploited, and die in captivity. This 21st century slave trade feeds a global demand for cheap and vulnerable labour. In fact, the United Nations estimates that this multibillion dollar industry is the third largest source of revenue for organized crime. Victims of trafficking often endure brutal conditions that results in physical, emotional, and psychological trauma. Victims are isolated from friends and family, subdued with drugs, and forced to live and work in unsanitary conditions. This presentation will provide clinicians with the knowledge on trafficking and give specific tools that can be used to identify, intervene upon, and treat victims and survivors. THE RISKS AND BENEFITS OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON THE MENTAL HEALTH OF ADOLESCENTS The Internet and social media now impact almost every aspect of people’s lives and have altered social interactions and ways of being. Many young people use the Internet and social media in a way that is detrimental to their mental health, with the potential of developing symptoms traditionally associated with addiction. Despite this desperation to use the Internet and social media, a recent study showed that the more time young people spend on social media, the less happy they feel about everything except their friendships. More specifically, they felt less happy about school and school work, their appearance, their family, and life in general. It appears that girls are more affected than boys. It is important however that we don’t blame the medium but the message. There are positive messages out there on social media, which can help young people with mental health difficulties but also some very harmful messages and practices can be found online too. This talk will explore ‘The risks and benefits of social media on the mental health of adolescents’. Dr Jon Goldin Dr Jon Goldin FRCPsych is a Consultant in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Great Ormond Street Hospital and an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Child Health. He has been Head of Service on the Mildred Creak Unit for the past fifteen years and is Lead Psychiatrist in the Department of Child and Adolescent Mental Health (DCAMH). Dr Goldin is Joint Training Programme Director for the Great Ormond Street/Royal London Higher Training Scheme in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. He is also the Elected Vice Chair of the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Faculty Executive at the Royal College of Psychiatrists and Co-Chair of the Westminster Parliamentary Committee. Dr Goldin has an interest in public engagement and lobbying around CAMHS issues and has been interviewed widely on both TV and radio. STEVE MOORE, CLARK FRENCH, GAVIN SATHIANATHAN AND CRISPIN BLUNT MP

MEDICAL CANNABIS IN THE UK Global drug policy change has slowly shifted the public opinion on cannabis over the years from a dangerous substance to a medicine with a plethora of positive applications. This shift in public opinion not only shows that the industry is growing, but that some countries have enough hindsight and experience to sharpen their policy and offer a market correctly regulated and balanced between the industry’s goals and patients’ needs. Medical cannabis markets are developing everywhere and this tide of change will inevitably come to the UK. Chaired by Steve Moore, Director of think-tank Volteface, and joined by Clark French, founder of the United Patients Alliance, this session will discuss legalisation of medical cannabis; where we are politically, what the current challenges are, and what the future looks like for UK drug policy, in a rapidly changing global context. Steve Moore Steve is the Director of London based think tank Volteface. He has spent a career working across media, politics, public affairs and campaigning. Volteface is a think tank looking at alternatives to current drug policies, cultivating fresh thinking and new ideas via our online and print magazine and an ongoing programme of private and public events. Volte Face covers the policy and politics of drugs from the perspectives of science, health, lifestyle, culture, business and economics. Its ambition is to broaden the range of voices and perspectives to enliven and elevate this debate. Volteface works with an array of partners across civil society, business, media and government to foster public engagement, formulate new evidence-based policy ideas and acts as a thoughtful advocate for change. Clark French Clark French is an MS patient who treats his symptoms with cannabis. Clark has replaced all pharmaceutical drugs saving the NHS up to £30,000 a year. Founder of the United Patients Alliance, Clark campaigns tirelessly for access to cannabis as a medicine. The United Patients alliance seeks to advance legal access to cannabis therapeutics in the UK. The United Patients Alliance was founded to represent the interests of these patients and to call attention to the injustice of prosecuting individuals for treating their chronic conditions with cannabis. Some of the most vulnerable members of our society face up to fourteen years in prison for consuming a medicine that is legal across North America and Europe. Gavin Sathianathan Gavin is the CEO and co-founder of Forma Holdings, an international cannabis company which advises, makes investments and operates cannabis businesses. He is also a nonexecutive director of Oxford Cannabinoid Technologies and a trustee of the United Patients Alliance. Gavin was previously an executive with Tesco, Facebook and Endemol, and started his career as a management consultant at Bain & Company. Gavin has a degree from Imperial College London and an MBA from Harvard Business School. Crispin Blunt MP Crispin Blunt is the Conservative MP for Reigate. COULD DUAL DIAGNOSIS BE THE KEY TO PERSONALISED TREATMENT IN ADDICTION? As our knowledge about addiction is increasing the association between mental illness and addiction is better understood. The controversy about the appropriateness of the term Dual Diagnosis to describe such a heterogeneous group of patients has sparked a debate on treatment and assessment models. It highlighted the fact that as far as treatment modalities are concerned, one size might just not fit all. Dr Mouton reviews current knowledge on comorbidity in the addiction field. Focusing on more than psychiatric comorbidity, he also looks at physical, social, psychological, spiritual and cultural components affected by addiction. Describing the role of the psychiatrist in addiction care he poses the questions: What if dual diagnosis is actually the key to better understanding of our patients? What if this knowledge leads to more individualised treatments? And are we ready for personalised treatment in the addiction field? Dr Constant Mouton Dr Constant Mouton specialised in Psychiatry after obtaining his medical qualification from the University of Pretoria. He currently works as a Consultant Psychiatrist and Clinical Head of Department at Triora Recovery Clinics based in the Netherlands. Dr Mouton is an expert in recovery, rehabilitation and dual diagnosis treatment. He also consults at Triora International, situated in Spain and the UK.

CRIMINAL JUSTICE DIVERSION INTO DRUG OR ALCOHOL TREATMENT - HOW ARE WE DOING? For over 20 years, a key UK drug strategy objective has been to identify people with drug problems in police stations, courts and prisons, and encourage them to accept treatment to address their addictive and criminal behaviours. Over the same period in the US, there has been widespread development of Drug Courts that have the same objective. This session will consist of a panel conversation and facilitated discussion between Mike Trace (Former UK Deputy Drug Czar, and current CEO of Forward Trust) and Jac Charlier (Director of PTAC - a US coalition of agencies promoting pre-trial diversion) that addresses the following questions: • To what extent, with hindsight, were these policies and programmes well implemented? • Did they achieve their objectives of reducing drug related offending, and getting more people into recovery? • Are the current mechanisms for diversion working well? • What should happen next - in the USA and the UK? Mike Trace After 12 years of working on projects that provided treatment to the homeless, drug users and offenders, Mike held the post of Deputy UK Anti-Drug Co-ordinator. From 2000 to 2003, he was the chair of the European Union Drugs Agency, the European Monitoring Centre on Drugs and Drug Addiction. He was also director of performance at the National Treatment Agency. In 2002, he left to work for the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in Vienna. After a year as chief executive of The Blenheim Project, a provider of community treatment services in London, he took up his current post as chief executive of The Forward Trust in 2004. Jac Charlier A nationally recognised expert in pre-arrest diversion, Jac Charlier specialises in community corrections policy and civic engagement, including developing strategies and solutions that meet the needs of both the criminal justice system and the community. He currently leads criminal justice consulting and training services for the Center for Health and Justice (CHJ) at TASC, specialising in system-level solutions to substance use and mental health challenges across the criminal justice system. Jac joined TASC in 2011 after 16 years of service in the State Parole Division of the Illinois Department of Corrections, where he specialised in building connections between parole and the community, and bringing innovations from research into practice. PREVENTING A CRISIS: EARLY INTERVENTION AND PREVENTION IN YOUNG PEOPLE The 2018 Prince’s Trust Macquarie Youth Index reveals that the happiness and confidence young people feel in their lives has fallen to their lowest levels since the study was first commissioned in 2009. Young people fear for their emotional health more than ever before, as worries about the future, money and generally ‘not being good enough’ pile up on them. Young people’s happiness and confidence in their emotional health has dropped to the lowest levels ever recorded. In the most complex cases, more young people are having to access intensive inpatient services as a result of their mental, behavioural addiction health problems. Chris Martin, CEO of UK youth charity ‘The Mix’, will discuss and explore how we can address these issues and ensure our children grow up in a safe, healthy environment, and have the ability to find help if it’s required. Most importantly, Chris will discuss how early intervention and prevention can ensure that we tackle problems for children and families before they become more difficult to reverse.

Chris Martin Chris Martin is Chief Executive Officer at The Mix. Chris is passionate about digital for social good and leader of the amazing team at The Mix growing its ecosystem of information, support and community tools for young people. Chris was the architect of the groundbreaking merger between YouthNet and Get Connected Helpline that created The Mix in 2016. He set its three-year business plan as well as defining the charity’s strategies around service delivery, marketing and fundraising. Chris also sits on a variety of sector and governmental advisory panels related to youth and digital. He is a gadget lover, trustee of the Harrow Club W10 & fellow of the RSA.

RACHEL RUSSELL

FAMILIES AND SUBSTANCE USE DISORDERS: A RELATIONAL PARADIGM IN ADDICTION TREATMENT Traditionally, the family component of addiction treatment centres around concepts of “co-dependence” and “boundaries” with a heavy emphasis on teaching family members to identify and avoid “enabling” behaviours. The underlying premise is that one person in the family has a problem, and that problem is causing problems for everyone else. Families are usually treated separately from the person with the substance use disorder, and it is not uncommon to hear “the family shouldn’t be involved” or “the client isn’t ready to deal with family work.” This presentation will offer an alternative framework that: contextualises addiction as a problem that affects the family as a whole, challenges blame, cultivates collective problem-solving and emphasizes a relational paradigm. Such an approach offers an opportunity for families to be involved in recovery at any stage of individual treatment, and builds on family strengths to support individual (and family) recovery in a unique way. Rachel Russell Rachel Russell is Chief Clinical Officer at Freedom Institute, a nonprofit, outpatient recovery centre that has been operating in New York City since 1976. Freedom Institute is a premier provider of intensive outpatient programming, serving primarily those from high-achieving communities. Its Family Program has received broad recognition for its innovative approach to combining systemic family therapy and substance abuse treatment. Under Rachel’s leadership, the Institute has integrated family work into clinical programming for substance abuse, from assessment to intensive outpatient treatment, and into its school-based prevention programming. Rachel developed an early intervention program for adolescents who have begun experimenting with substances but do not meet criteria for a substance use disorder, and co-edited a parent handbook (to be published March, 2018) on adolescent social-emotional wellness and prevention of high-risk behaviour. Prior to Freedom Institute, Rachel worked for fifteen years in mental health treatment for low-income youth and families.

PRESENTATION ONE: TRANSITIONING IN TREATMENT: UNDERSTANDING GENDER WITH ACTION (FOR THERAPISTS) More people are feeling safer coming out as transgender than ever before. We are seeing more transgender clients in treatment than ever. So now what? When a client informs us they would like to transition or are in the midst of transitioning when they come to treatment, we may freeze. We may not know what to do and we may need help. This session is geared toward cisgender clinicians who may be working with transgender clients or will be working with transgender clients in the future. This session will be experiential in nature, will give clinicians a better understanding of themselves as it relates to their transgender clients, and will offer helpful hints to be more prepared and comfortable working with the trans population. If you are ready and willing to get up and experience gender, clinical work, and your own bias, then this is the session for you. Beck Gee-Cohen Beck has a Master’s degree in Addiction Studies from Hazelden where he received an Excellence in Writing Award. He has facilitated trainings and given lectures around the country at conferences, prisons, schools and treatment centres focusing on LGBTQ+ communities and addiction. Beck continues to train clinicians and facility staff on LGBTQ+ issues, help facilities establish LGBTQ+ inclusive policies, and provide programme development for facilities that want to expand their services to LGBTQ+ populations. Beck is currently the owner and lead consultant at BGC Consulting - an agency helping to train and change the culture of mental health and addiction treatment in better serving LGBTQ+ populations.

ANTIPATHY OR NAIVETY: 12-STEP FACILITATION IN UK HEALTH AND SOCIAL SERVICES When 300 English addiction treatment workers were surveyed, 9% said they used the 12-Step model and only a third felt that their clients were suited to AA or NA. Less than half would recommend trying a meeting. The NHS survey of the UK population found that of people who reported serious concern about their drinking some had had counselling, but very few had ever attended a mutual aid group This presentation traces some myths and barriers and proposes changes for colleagues and sufferers. Professor Jonathan Chick Professor Jonathan Chick, Medical Director of Castle Craig Hospital, is an eminent Consultant Psychiatrist with a distinguished career in the National Health Service. Professor Chick was a leading researcher in the addiction field for a number of years and has been published extensively in peer-reviewed journals. He is currently the chief editor of Alcohol and Alcoholism, which is the official journal of the Medical Council on Alcohol. HOW CAN WE CONCEPTUALISE BEHAVIORAL ADDICTION WITHOUT PATHOLOGISING COMMON BEHAVIOURS? Following the recent changes to the diagnostic category for addictive disorders in DSM-5, it is urgent to clarify what constitutes behavioural addiction to have a clear direction for future research and classification. However, in the years following the release of DSM-5, an expanding body of research has increasingly classified engagement in a wide range of common behaviours and leisure activities as possible behavioural addiction, resulting in pathologising non-clinically relevant behaviours. In this talk, Professor Billieux will present an operational definition of behavioural addiction together with a number of exclusion criteria, to avoid pathologising common behaviours. Professor Joël Billieux Joël is head of the Addictive and Compulsive Behaviours Lab and member of the Integrative Research Unit on Social and Individual Development (University of Luxembourg). He was co-director of the Laboratory for Experimental Psychopathology (Université catholique de Louvain) and the Internet and Gambling Disorders Clinic (Saint-Luc University Hospitals, Brussels). He is a board member of the International Society for the Study of Behavioural Addictions. He has published over 120 peer-reviewed papers, as well as book chapters and books. He is Regional Assistant Editor for International Gambling Studies, Associate Editor for the Journal of Behavioural Addictions, Section Editor for Current Addiction Reports, and a member of several other editorial advisory boards.

OPIOIDS: BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN HARM REDUCTION AND ABSTINENCE Ever since Friedrich Sertürner synthesized morphine out of opium in 1803, people have been self-medicating with synthetic derivatives of the opium poppy. Local epidemics of opiate and opioid addiction have occurred across the globe since the first Anglo-Chinese opium war (1839-1842). In the mid 20th century, global demand for diamorphine (heroin) created vast drug producing regions, such as The Golden Triangle (in South East Asia) and The Golden Crescent (in the Middle East). In the 21st century, big pharma has unleashed an epidemic of addiction to opioid analgesics. Treatment providers now face a serious challenge. How do they maintain abstinence as the ideal goal for opioid addicts, when risk of relapse and death by overdose upon discharge is so high? This presentation will outline a simple model which challenges what ‘clean’ really means, and manages tapered withdrawal within the context of a 12 Step abstinence model. Alastair Mordey Alastair Mordey (BA Hons, FDAP), is a registered drug and alcohol professional with 15 years experience in all four tiers of the UK’s treatment system, from detox to aftercare. In 2010 Alastair co-founded The Cabin Addictions Services Group in Thailand. The Cabin Group have a 120 bed in patient treatment facility in Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand, and six IOP’s worldwide. At The Cabin, Alastair developed ‘Recovery Zones’, an ‘all addictions’ model used to treat both chemical and process addictions and impart 12 Step abstinence principles using secular terminology, as well as ‘The Edge’ a pioneering approach to working with young men, which uses vipassana meditation and Muay Thai boxing as its main modalities.

THE TRAUMA HEART: STORIES OF SURVIVAL AND HOPE We live in an age of trauma. The majority of people who are addicted to substances and/or are afflicted with process addictions (digital compulsions, sex and relationship, eating disorders, self-harming behaviours, gambling and pornography) are trauma survivors. Many people who are caught in the web of addiction don’t identify as trauma survivors until their personal, familial, intergenerational and in-uterine history is fully understood. And when we recognize that childhood trauma, including abandonment and neglect are the building blocks of a person’s blueprint for functioning and thriving, we can understand the power of addiction as a soothing and survival mechanism offering relief and release from the emotional and psychic pain of trauma and these addictions and addictive behaviours are learned very early in life. Unfortunately, research shows that relapse is inevitable without trauma resolution. This presentation explores making sense of the behaviours, how to identify the signs that trauma may be an issue with your client and their families. This presentation offers the stories and process of healing that has worked with the most “resistant” clients which translates to our most wounded clients. Judy Crane Judy has over 3 decades of experience working in both residential and out-patient settings. She is a Certified Addiction Professional in Florida, Certified Sex Addiction Therapist, a Certified Hypnotist, EMDR and a specialist for healing trauma and PTSD. RECOVERY STREET FILM FESTIVAL - 1.00PM – 1.50PM VICTORIA SUITE

The Recovery Street Film Festival focuses on filmmakers who have a lived experience of recovering from drug or alcohol addiction, whether it is themselves or a loved one. Demonstrating through the medium of film, RSFF highlights the diverse issues that are faced by people overcoming addiction and how those around them can be affected. The aim is to empower people affected by addiction by giving them a voice, providing a platform for them to tell their own stories of the ‘ups and downs’ and how they reached recovery. The films highlight the problems that are confronted when someone is attempting to regain their place in society: to gain new friends, to revive links with family, secure a home and get a job.

DR JUDITH LANDAU

HELPING FAMILIES AND COMMUNITIES ACCESS RESILIENCE TO PREVENT MENTAL ILLNESS AND ADDICTION FOLLOWING MASS DISASTER We may not be able to stop natural or human made mass disasters, losses from major epidemics, or acts of random violence from happening in our world - from the international opiate epidemic, to the mass shooting in Las Vegas, to the Grenfell Tower disater in London, but we can take steps to prevent the mental and physical damage this trauma can do to individuals, families and communities. By working through natural change agents as Family and Community Links, we empower those communities and families to build resilience and lead healthier lives in the present and for future generations. This presentation will review several studies and clinical vignettes that illustrate the benefit of mobilising individuals, families, and communities to build positive attachment and to draw on their intergenerational strengths and resilience. Practical methods of assessment, mapping, and intervention that consider all levels of individual, family and community involvement and collaboration will be presented. Dr Judith Landau Dr Judith Landau, child, family and community neuropsychiatrist and former professor of psychiatry and family medicine, has specialised in trauma, addiction and co-occurring disorders for 40+ years, exploring how to facilitate resilience and healing for individuals, families and communities. Dr Landau is the developer of Evidence Based, Best Practice Transitional Family Therapy, the first integrative family systems model, Invitational Intervention®: ARISE® Continuing Care and LINC Community Resilience.

WHEN IS SEXUAL BEHAVIOUR A LIFESTYLE CHOICE AND WHEN IS IT AN ADDICTION? This presentation will explore the challenges faced when working with people with diverse sexual lifestyles, including those within ChemSex communities. How do we work with people who know their sexual behaviour, and co-current drug use, is causing them problems, but do not want to be labelled an addict or follow one of the traditional treatment approaches? During this presentation Paula Hall and Dr Stephen Higgins will explore the unique needs of people within the ChemSex community and how we as addiction professionals can help them break unwanted, compulsive behaviours. The session will explore the importance of working affirmatively with GSRD (Gender, Sexual, Relationship Diverse) individuals and consider what ‘positive sexuality’ may mean for them. It will also explore how using the CHOICE model of recovery can help therapists focus on future gains, rather than loss and secure confident recovery. Paula Hall Paula Hall is a UKCP registered psychotherapist, writer and broadcaster who specialises in sex addiction. She is Clinical Director of The Laurel Centre who provide nationwide treatment for addiction and support for partners and is course director for the Accredited Diploma in Sex Addiction Counselling. She is author of Understanding & Treating Sex Addiction (Routledge 2013) and Sex Addiction, The Partners Perspective (Routledge 2015) and is widely published in academic journals as well as popular press. Dr Stephen Higgins Steve is a Clinical Psychologist working in NHS and private practice across addictions, sexual health & HIV, and people living with autoimmune conditions. Steve developed expertise working with ChemSex addiction following the rise in men seeking help over the past several years. Steve’s work involves helping men maintain safety and control over ChemSex use, whilst building their skills to create the sexual and relationship lives that they want. Steve applies addiction therapy within broader constructionist, narrative and cognitive -behavioural approaches.

DR PRUN BIJRAL

REDUCING THE IMPACT OF A FENTANYL OUTBREAK IN THE COMMUNITY Fentanyl is now hitting the headlines in the UK. The drug is not so well-known this side of the Atlantic but, if experiences in America are anything to go by, that will change. Sadly, fentanyl is a problem that is unlikely to be going away. Fentanyl and its analogues range from highly valued medicines to highly dangerous synthetic opioid drugs with little or no legitimate use in humans. The painkiller and anaesthetic is 50 times more potent than morphine, is powerfully addictive, fatal even in tiny amounts, and has become a huge part of America’s opioid crisis. Change Grow Live (CGL), the UKs largest drug and alcohol treatment provider has launched a new report and action plan to mitigate the threat from fentanyls. DR Prun Bijral will discuss improving awareness of prevalence and being able to rapidly identify a possible outbreak which could be critical to supporting effective overall management. Dr Prun Bijral Prun is the Medical Director and Responsible Officer for all CGL services providing clinical interventions across England and Wales. He ensures the highest quality of care is provided through a consistent clinical governance policy in line with GMC-GMP, NTA, NICE, Home Office clinical guidelines. He is responsible for in excess of 33,000 patients assessed and treated across over 65 CGL clinics nationally, 45 doctors, over 140 nurses, with an overall contract value of about £110M. He completed his specialist training in 1997 and previously led Tier 4 clinical services for Greater Manchester West NHS Trust. Previous roles include: Chair of the Medicines Management Committee; lead for undergraduate medical education; clinical lead for research and governance and Associate Medical Director.

ALCOHOL MISUSE IN SPECIAL POPULATIONS: INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES AND PEOPLE WITH TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY. There is little and conflicting evidence on the prevalence of alcohol misuse and treatment available for people with Intellectual Disabilities (also referred as Learning Disabilities). As is similar to other vulnerable populations, adults with ID have increasingly lived more independently in the community following the closure of long-stay hospitals. This has increased their exposure to environmental stressors and substance and alcohol misuse, negatively impacting on their functioning, relationships, physical and mental health, and safety. Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is the most common cause of disability in younger adults. Yet the community care for patients with TBI varies hugely in the UK. There is a well-established link between TBI and alcohol misuse, with both TBI leading to increased levels of alcohol misuse and alcohol misuse contributing to risk of TBIs. The effects of neuronal damage have been shown to increase after TBI accompanied by alcohol intoxication. This presentation is based on the experience gained from the first in the UK feasibility study on this topic, and draws from the experience of setting up and running the first ever pilot of a combined TBI and alcohol brief intervention service in London. Dr Christos Kouimtsidis Consultant in Addiction Psychiatry and Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at Imperial College London. Honorary Senior Lecturer at King’s College London (2008-2011) and at St. George’s, University of London (2003-2008). In 2017 he received the “Leadership” and in 2009 “Best Employee” awards from NHS trusts and in 2015 the HSJ Award for Clinical Research Impact. His main research interest is on psychological interventions and hybrid models in addiction, the effect of alcohol detoxifications on the brain and alcohol clinical interventions for special populations. He has received research grants of more than 1.2 million pounds, published more than 70 peer reviewed papers, invited papers and book chapters.

SO YOU WANNA BE IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY? READ THE SMALL PRINT FIRST. “The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There’s also a negative side.” Hunter S. Thompson. The Music Industry is notorious as an environment of life in the fast lane, money for nothing, and sex and drugs and rock’n roll. The impact on the mental, emotional and behavioural health of those who work within the industry is often overlooked. Artists, technicians, engineers, managers and anyone else who works within the industry and makes it possible for us to enjoy the end product tend to be at risk of mental health problems. They suffer more than their fair share of issues that can end in ruined careers and lives. This is often down to lack of acknowledgement of the particular contributing factors within this setting. Lucy Heyman, MSC, and Music Support Clinical Trustee Geraldine McEwan will provide a scientific overview of the research that exists in considering the physical and mental problems that musicians and industry personnel face in their careers. They will also look at the researchinformed interventions and support that can help with these problems. A must for anyone interested in finding out more about issues within this industry or with an interest in becoming part of the Music Support network. Lucy Heyman Lucy Heyman is a multi-disciplinary vocal coach and performance science researcher, promoting the mental, physical and vocal health of the clients she works with. She coaches on an individual basis, holds workshops for groups and delivers bespoke training programmes to support and enhance health and wellbeing in artists. Geraldine McEwan Geraldine was the first women in the world to do live sound. She worked as a tour manager across Europe, America and the Far East, with Depeche Mode, Vince Clark and Alison Moyet, as Yazoo, The Birthday Party, Nick Cave’s first band, and many other indie groups. During the early eighties she lived in Manhattan where she worked with UK independent labels Mute, Factory and Rough Trade. She enjoyed the excesses of the industry and club scene picking up a heroin and alcohol habit in an attempt to manage chaos. When she got sober she found her voice and began to write, becoming a founder member of the Wimpole Writers Workshop. She also trained as a psychotherapist where she could use the benefit of her experience and deep understanding of human frailty. She was commissioned by The Kings Fund to write, ‘The Holistic Approach to Addiction’. She currently works in the private and voluntary mental health sectors as a Psychotherapist, Consultant and Supervisor with a special interest in substance misuse, dependency and trauma.

NEUROSCIENCE FOR NON-SCIENTISTS: THE BRAIN TARGETS FOR MEDICATION DEVELOPMENT The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) defines substance use disorders (SUD) as primary, chronic diseases of brain reward, motivation, memory, and related circuitry. Without treatment or engagement in recovery activities, this is reflected as an individual who is pathologically pursuing reward and/or relief by substance use and other behaviours, despite consequences. As we develop strategies and treatments to prevent use and intervene on early use, knowledge of the neuroscience can improve our ability to respond effectively, and with compassion. Each of the medication development targets and psychological strategies employed in the treatment of SUD are tied to specific organ systems, most generally the pathways in the brain. Since many of the areas of the brain that are involved with mental disorders overlap those affected by chronic drug use, medications that treat symptoms of anxiety and mood are also useful in changing the incentives and patterns of use. Andrea G Barthwell, MD, DFASAM will present the neuroscience needed to understand SUDs and medications that work on these systems. Dr Andrea Grubb Barthwell Dr Andrea Grubb Barthwell, M.D., D.F.A.S.A.M., is the Chief Medical Officer for Treatment Management Company. Dr Barthwell leads, educates and guides the treatment of their clients through evidence-based, clinical best practices in each of their 31 licensed, facility locations across the nation. She is also the founder and CEO of Two Dreams, a comprehensive wellness centre for the treatment of alcoholism and substance use disorders and the founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Washington, DC-based global health care and policy-consulting firm EMGlobal LLC. Dr Barthwell served as Deputy Director for Demand Reduction in the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) under President George W Bush from 2002 to 2004. In 2003, Dr Barthwell received the Betty Ford Award from the Association for Medical Education and Research in Substance Abuse. In 1997, Dr Barthwell’s peers named her one of the “Best Doctors in America” in addiction medicine.

THE THEORY OF CHANGE – AN INTEGRATED APPROACH This interactive session will present Forward’s new Theory of Change and how an integrated approach that supports health and well-being, substance misuse, relationships, employment and housing together contribute to longterm recovery and rehabilitation. The session will include examples of different service interventions, case studies, discussion of key ‘drivers of change’ (instilling belief and hope, peer role models, setting out clear and practical steps for lasting change, and establishing networks of support) and approaches to capturing evidence of impact. There will also be an opportunity to interact with subject experts from Forward’s operations team, providing real insight on what works in engaging and developing people’s potential to move forward in their lives. The Forward Trust (formerly the Rehabilitation for Addicted Prisoners Trust) supports over 16,000 people every year to break the cycle of crime and addiction, working in both prisons and in the community.

Carwyn Gravell Carwyn joined Forward Trust (then Blue Sky) in 2014 as Head of Fundraising. He has since taken on a wider role as Forward’s Divisional Director of Business Development. His areas of responsibility now include business development, research, communications fundraising. DR TIM LEIGHTON AND KATHERINE JENKINS

WHAT CAN THE PAST TEACH US ABOUT THE FUTURE OF ADDICTIONS COUNSELLING? The presentation and workshop will be a participatory session discussing the future of addictions counselling, and how decades of experience can inform best practice whilst also combining cutting edge research and treatment methods. Addictions counselling with individuals, couples, families and groups has become more complex and challenging. How can we define and describe the training and qualifications needed to ensure the best practice and the most effective interventions? What is the relationship between the quality framework and the therapeutic work? The workshop will explore tensions that arise in practice as experienced by the audience, and suggest ways to get the training, support and continuing professional development you need. Tim and Katherine will be encouraging the audience to share their own thoughts and ideas. Dr Tim Leighton Tim is Director of Professional Education and Research at Action on Addiction, and has worked in the addiction field for over 30 years, as counsellor, counselling trainer, clinical supervisor, treatment programme developer, educator and researcher. He is a UKCP accredited Cognitive Analytic Psychotherapist. He has contributed to many academic conferences, published a range of book chapters and articles, and sat on a range of expert advisory committees, including for NICE, ACMD and UKDPC. His doctoral research was on mechanisms of change in drug and alcohol rehab, and he is committed to the continuing improvement of treatment programmes and to developing integration between treatment and communities of recovery. Katherine Jenkins Katherine has a BSc in psychology and criminology from Staffordshire University, and an MSc in applied forensic psychology from the University of Leicester. Her therapeutic focus has been on the implementation of psychologically informed environments in third sector managed services, and her specialist areas of teaching are qualitative research, assessment and treatment planning, and performance and quality management. Katherine has worked in the addiction, mental health and homelessness sectors for over 15 years and has managed services in both residential and community-based settings. Katherine is a member of the British Psychological Society.

PRESENTATION TWO: TRANSGENDER CLIENTS IN TREATMENT SETTINGS; POLICIES, PROCEDURES, AND PREPARATION As we are seeing more transgender clients coming into treatment settings, it is important to be prepared. As a facility, it is important to reflect acceptance and affirmation throughout the organisation. In this workshop, executive level staff will learn how to address policies and procedures that are inclusive of transgender people. We will look in depth at the changes that can be made both immediately and over a period of time. An inclusive organisation ultimately helps the client start a successful journey to recovery.

THE TIMELINE OF CATASTROPHIC TRAUMA: UNDERSTANDING THE LIFE-LONG AND TRANSGENERATIONAL IMPACT OF MAJOR TRAUMA ON VICTIMS, SURVIVORS AND THE COMMUNITY. While many therapists are trained to help people cope with ‘repressed’ or long-standing childhood trauma, there is a lack of both understanding and training on catastrophic or violent death trauma, caused by war, terrorism, natural disaster, homicide, suicide or drug-overdose. These events are different in their scope and effect on the lives of victims, survivors and the community. They are sudden, violent and caused by either the act of a person, group, or nature itself. They leave deep scars on individuals, families and communities and while there are services, they are often inadequate, uncoordinated, disorganized and poorly delivered. This presentation is a unique opportunity to understand the nature, timeline and effects of violent death trauma. You will hear the stories, perspectives and life-long effects from three experts working in the field and their personal experiences. Professionals will gain valuable insights on how to work with survivors, understand their experience and shape treatment plans that will provide integrated, long-term care and solutions. Kathleen O’Hara Kathleen O’Hara MA LPC is a psychotherapist with 25 years of experience serving international families. She is the author of A Grief Like No Other, a classic resource which has helped thousands of people cope with the devastating effects of Violent Death Trauma. She is a consultant for the US Department of Justice and a board member of Supporting Justice in the UK. She is in private practice in London and travels globally to deliver services to families and create innovative programmes and policy to assist organizations and institutions. She was a speaker at the United Nations in New York February 2017 for the international Day of Women and Girls in Science. Judith Thompson In August 2015 Judith became the Commissioner for victims and survivors of the conflict in Northern Ireland. This role was established by legislation in 2006 and its principal aim is to promote the interests of victims and survivors. Judith has more than 30 years working in various roles within Justice organisations and in communities including: NI Manager of the Community Justice National Training Organisation, working with the Home Office on a new Probation Officer Qualification for England and Wales and with the Probation Inspectorate to monitor its delivery. She also led the development of a Government endorsed qualification framework for Community Safety in NI.

Raja Chellat Raja Chellat lost several family members in the UK Grenfell Fire, this past June. She qualified as an integrative counsellor in 2004 and is experienced in working with children and young people experiencing many difficulties in their lives such as self-harm, confidence issues and bereavement. She has set up counselling services in various schools and community centres in West London. She has worked as a mental health worker for children and adolescents and is currently a school counsellor and also involved in setting up a support group, called My Shepherd for the victims of Grenfell.

PROFESSOR DAVID NUTT

PSYCHEDELIC ASSISTED PSYCHOTHERAPY – NEW NEUROSCIENTIFIC APPROACHES TO ADDICTION AND DEPRESSION The world is entering a new phase of psychiatric treatments. After the psychotherapy and medical treatment phases in the last century, we are at the start of the phase where we use drugs to assist and empower psychotherapeutic processes. The origins of this exciting new development are the massive growth of neuropsychopharmacology, particularly in relation to the use of psychedelics (e.g. LSD, Psilocybin) and entactogens (e.g. MDMA). New research on the impact of these drugs on brain functions show clear impacts on brain processes that contribute to maladaptive behavioural processes. Parallel research has demostrated efficacy for psilocybin and MDMA in disorders such as resistant depression and PTSD. In this ground-breaking talk, Professor Nutt will cover these remarkable new developments and show how they may be used more broadly in psychiatry/psychotherapy in the future. Professor David Nutt Professor David Nutt is a psychiatrist and a Professor of Neuropsychopharmacology at Imperial College London. He uses brain imaging techniques to explore causes of addiction and psychiatric disorders and to search for new treatments. He has published over 400 original research papers, reviews and book chapters, eight government reports on drugs and 28 books. He is currently the President of the European Brain Council and Founding Chair of DrugScience. In 2010, The Times Eureka science magazine voted him one of the 100 most important figures in British Science. In 2013, he was awarded the John Maddox Prize from Nature/Sense About Science for standing up for science.

DRUG AND ALCOHOL APPRENTICESHIPS AND BEYOND: KEEPING THE WORKFORCE UP-TO-DATE This session will look at the latest developments in what may be the greatest change in workforce development - the drug and alcohol worker apprenticeship. With employers designing the standardisation of training for drug and alcohol practitioners we can hope to see an improvement in the provision of services, the retention of staff and the encouragement of new talent to the field. The session will also look at the complexity of providing CPD across the drug and alcohol sector, with each profession having its own demands while needing a consistency of training across the workforce. Kate Halliday Kate is Interim Executive Director for SMMGP / FDAP as well as working directly in the field part-time as a senior social worker; these different strands of work feed into each other, strengthening her experience, understanding and commitment to the health and social care sector. Kate’s social work experience includes a specialism in supporting recovery in people with drug and alcohol problems. She has worked in mental health teams, the criminal justice system (including prisons), safeguarding children teams and has also worked with adults and children with physical and learning difficulties.

DR JAMES FLOWERS

THE UTILITY OF MULTIPLE PSYCHOSOCIAL TREATMENTS IN PAIN RECOVERY, A REVIEW OF SELFMANAGEMENT THERAPIES FOR CHRONIC PAIN: RATIONALE, EFFICACY, AND IMPLEMENTATION In this program, Dr. Flowers will highlight a suggested shift from epidemic opioid prescribing practices for patients with chronic pain, to a multidisciplinary pain recovery program model of treatment. Based on evidence summarized in multiple systematic reviews, it is now clear that opioid therapy is not indicated for the long-term treatment of most chronic pain disorders. At the same time, long-term opioid exposure substantially increases the risk for problematic opioid use, addiction, and overdose. Dr. Flowers will approach this from the perspective of a residential chronic pain rehabilitation and an outpatient pain recovery program. Special attention will be paid to the psychosocial characteristics that contribute to different responses to pain, as well as the potential utility of multiple psychosocial treatments over the course of the pain recovery program model. Case studies will also be presented by Dr. Flowers. Dr James Flowers Dr Flowers is one of the most familiar and respected names in the area of multidisciplinary chronic pain and addiction treatment, and functional restoration pain programs in the United States. For more than 24 years, Dr Flowers has occupied an expert leadership position in the pain and addiction recovery field, and has used his experience and knowledge to develop a substantial number of pain recovery and addiction programs within some of the most respected healthcare and addiction treatment centres in the country. He is fellowship trained in behavioural pain management and completed clinical rotations in behavioural pain management at The University of Washington, The Rosomoff Comprehensive Center for Pain, The University of Miami, and The Mayo Clinic. He is an adjunct professor at The University of Houston, Rice University and Sam Houston State University where he lectures on clinical pathology of pain, assessment of pain and clinical treatment of pain.

SPOTLIGHT PRESENTATION FATHER JOE AND PHILIPPA FRISBY

THE CIRCLE – A FILM ON YOGA TRANSFORMING LIVES OF STREET CHILDREN CAUGHT IN WEB OF DRUG ADDICTION The Circle is a film about the transformational power of yoga in treating drug addiction in the street children of Mumbai. The film focuses on the centre in Dharavi, which finds and takes in some of the most vulnerable members of society, ultimately reforming their lives. The documentary tells the tale of four street children through their individual stories, portraying their harrowing ordeals whilst living on the streets. We hear how they fall into a cycle of addiction, how they live out of dustbins, and survive simply by selling rubbish, using drugs to block out their inner pain.

Father Joseph H. Pereira Father Joe is the Founder and Managing Trustee of the Kripa Foundation, which is devoted to the care, support and rehabilitation of those affected by chemical dependency and HIV & AIDS. Since its inception in 1981 in Mumbai, the Kripa Foundation has grown exponentially and forms a vital link to providing social stability in thirteen Indian states through various multifunction facilities and also has associations with facilities in Europe, Canada and the United States. Father Joe holds a Masters in Psychology and Philosophy from University of Bombay, Licentiate in Divinity (Theology) from Bombay & Poona, Certifications in Counselling Theory & Practice (Carkuff Model) & expertise from the Hazelden Institute of Minnesota. He has been involved for decades with yoga, first as a patient, pupil and practitioner, then in later years as a Certified Trainer and in recent decades as a friend, associate and an International Mentor of the Guruji B.K.S. Iyengar School of Yoga, Poona. Philippa Frisby Philippa Frisby, a certified Iyengar yoga teacher and filmmaker started her career in television after acquiring a degree in ‘Comparative Religion’ from Bristol University. Her initial work in TV and film includes ‘Dispatches’, an investigative strand for CH4; ‘The Torture Trail’ and Dispatches CH4, ‘The Saudi Tapes’ and ‘The Tale of The Three Lost Jewels’, a film shot in the final days of Israeli occupation in the Gaza Strip. Her passion for India started after she finished school and it grew stronger over time through the first film she ever worked on which was shot in India and she has a lifelong interest in yoga. This eventually inspired the filmmaker in her to make short documentaries on India, the first one being about the Ganges starting in Varanasi and ending in Haridwar at the Kumbha Mela. ‘The Circle’ is her first feature length documentary film based on treating drug addiction with yoga.
