“A lot of kids want to keep up with the latest trends but that doesn’t mean you as the parent should go broke in the process.”
Bucks With BUX Back 2 School Savings It is that time of year that most parents absolutely love and kids hate. Going back to school can mean spending a fortune, especially if you have more than one child. A lot of kids want to keep up with the latest trends, but that doesn’t mean you as the parent should go broke in the process. Be sure to shop at the end of the summer sales for clothes; there will be plenty of clothes that will be knocked down that can easily be worn in the early fall. As far as supplies go, you can either go to your local Walgreens or CVS. If you want the best sales look out for Staples' $0.01 to $2.00 sales. You will be very surprised the amounts that you will save for supplies. Currently they are offering the 15% off all season long. http://www.staples.com/sbd/cre/ marketing/back-to-school/index.html Make sure that you stick to your list that you make out so you don’t spend unnecessary money. Kmart is still offering layaway and you can put what you want in layaway and pay a little bit at a time. For more information visit www.kmart.com. Hopefully this will help with the back to school rush.

Word of the Month with MsiCandi Integrity (in·teg·ri·ty) adherence to moral and ethical principles; soundness of moral character; honesty. The breakdown on integrity is consistency of actions, values, methods, measures and principles. Depth and breadth of a value system may also be significant factors due to their congruence with a wider range of observations. People are said to have integrity to the extent that they behave according to the values, beliefs, and principles they claim to hold. One's value system may evolve over time while retaining integrity if inconsistencies are accounted for and resolved. Hypocrisy results when one part of a value system is demonstrably at odds with another and the person or group of people holding those values fails to account for the discrepancy. Hypocrisy is considered to be the opposite of integrity. (found at www.dictionary.com)
We at iCandi Productions pride ourselves on the integrity that we bring forth in all of our projects. What about you? Do you have any integrity?

MUSIC REVIEWS
Rahsaan Patterson - Bleuphoria Artistry Music Records, 2011
Kelly Rowland - Here I Am Universal/Motown Records, 2011
* Don’t Miss This* CDs you probably don't have (BUT SHOULD) Teedra Moses - Complex Simplicity
Rahsaan Patterson has never been a mainstream name in the halls of R&B, but he very well should be. With "R&B" being a subjective term these days, very few artists stay true to the true meaning of R&B. Rahsaan is definitely one of those artists, and he proves it yet again with this album. From the groove-inducing "Stay With Me" and "I Only Have Eyes For You" (the latter's harmonies alone are worth a mention), to the slow and syrupy "Miss You", to the rock-infused "Insomnia", these songs are well-crafted masterpieces from beginning to end. Any REAL fan of R&B can definitely appreciate this album for what it is: awesome. (5 Stars)(A+)
Lloyd - King of Hearts Interscope Records, 2011
It's been four years since Rowland has put out a complete album, but we've been teased with singles like "Commander", "When Love Takes Over", and "Rose Colored Glasses". With this release, Kelly is attempting to cement her name in people's mouth, much like her former Destiny's Child counterpart whose name rhymes with fiance'. This is a pretty good effort, and it definitely deserves a few spins. The sassy "I'm Dat Chick" opens the album on a high note, the sinewy "Motivation" (currently taking over airwaves) is a mainstream staple, and "Keep It Between Us" has a nice bounce to lyrics we can relate to. She sticks to dance songs (there are no true ballads on this album), so dance fans should love it, but it might alienate those looking for Kelly to SING a song or two or four. (4 Stars)(B+)
This underrated album is the epitome of relationships, life, love, and everything in between. "Rescue" is a ballad worth repeating and "Backstroke" keeps you interested.
Profyle - Whispers In the Dark
Kindred the Family Soul - Love Has No Recession Shanachie Entertainment Records, 2011
This seriously overlooked album has some ballads worth listening to, such as the title track, their remake of Stevie Wonder's "Overjoyed", and "Make Sure You're Home".
Lloyd burst onto the scene as a solo artist with his debut album Southside, and was then known as the little cute boy with the good hair and high voice. Fast forward to 2011 and gone are the long tresses but the high voice is still there, along with some "grown man" lyrics. On this effort, it works sometimes, and sometimes it can be rather irritating after a few songs. "Dedication to My Ex (Miss That)" is reminiscent of a Michael Jackson song (not a bad person to be compared to), whereas the singles "Be the One", "Lay It Down", and "Cupid" all have that high, over-repetitive voice. However, some of the slower (although raunchy) songs work, like "Naked", "Angel", and "You II". Not a Grammyworthy album by far, but not trash-worthy either. (3.75 stars)(B)
5
Husband and wife duo Aja and Fatin have collectively and consistently put out good, solid albums since their debut album, 2003's Surrender to Love. They may not have the mainstream success that they deserve, but their diehard fans eagerly anticipate any release. This release is just as solid as their previous albums, leading many to call them the Ashford and Simpson of our generation. "We Will All Know" features an awesome collaboration with fellow soulster Raheem DeVaughn, "Magic Happen" borrows the sounds of yesterday and brings them into today's times, "Sticking With You" is a song worth playing at any wedding, and "2 Words" is an ode to an apology that's needed. These songs are all about relationships; something we can all relate to. (5 Stars)(A+)

ICANDI LADY OF THE MONTH
AUGUST 2011
Keiki Butler I met Keiki at my first Jacksonville event, the Official “Meet & Tweet”. Thanks to Stylez (Man Candi of the Month April), I met a lot of great business contacts. Iʼve actually kept in touch with Keiki through twitter (follow her @redgurl2125). Although we have yet to collaborate on some business, I think itʼs time iCandi supporters get to see some Duval iCandi and how we do in Jacksonville, FL. MsiCandi: Hey Girly!! Welcome to iCandiland! Thank you for agreeing to be our “iCandi Lady” of the month for August. This is my birthday month so you got a great month!! (laughs) Keiki: No, thank you for having me. I hope you enjoy it! I just celebrated my birthday this weekend (July 29). So I'm still recovering. (laughs) MsiCandi: Okay then!! #TeamLeo (laughs) I have seen your pictures and you are definitely doing the dang on thing as far as modeling. At what age did you begin modeling? Keiki: Well thank you! I try (laughs), but unlike most people, I didn't start at a very young age. I started modeling at 16, mostly doing photo shoots, and then I branched out into runway modeling. MsiCandi: Youʼve done several fashion shows throughout the past few years. What do you enjoy most about “runway modeling”? Keiki: What do I like most? Umm...I love getting dolled and glammed up. I love the attention as you walk down the runway and the "all eyes on me" when I strut at the end.
To be featured as the iCandi Lady of The Month go to our website at www.iCandiPro.com
MsiCandi: If you could give upcoming, aspiring models one tip about how to get into the industry, what would it be? Keiki: Find a market (commercial, runway, print) and go hard in it. I was always told if you're a model, you should look like a model all the time. MsiCandi: Whatʼs the most challenging thing that you have come across in the field of modeling? Keiki: I would have to say adapting to your designer, photographer, etc., because they know what they are looking for and you have to give them that look! MsiCandi: So whatʼs the plan for Keiki Butlerʼs future? Does it stop with modeling, or do you want to branch out into other venues? Keiki: I sing a little but I'm not really trying to branch out into that though. So I guess you can say I'm focused on modeling. MsiCandi: Thanks so much for agreeing to be our iCandi Lady of the month. Be sure to stay connected with us here at iCandi Productions. Keiki- Mos Def You can find Keiki on Facebook at http://facebook.com/keiki.b or go to http://www.modelmayhem.com/KeikiB21
MsiCandi: What projects do you have coming up? What type of things can we look forward to? Keiki: I will be doing the Bronner Bros Hair show in Atlanta on August 23rd, and I have a large community fashion show in Cairo, GA on October 1st. MsiCandi: I know the fellas will be dying to know this one: Do you have yourself a “boo” at home waiting for you every night? Keiki: Yeah, there's a man in my life. He keeps me on my toes and a smile on my face. MsiCandi: Is there any type of modeling that you will NOT do? Do you have your limits when it comes to modeling? Keiki: I don't shoot nude! I feel like if I can't let my grandma see it, I ain't doing it.

BACK 2 SCHOOL FASHION Lady R.E.D. It's that time again: back to school shopping for you and the kids. If you are a teacher, you can add two or three new items to your wardrobe and interchange your outfit to create something fresh and new. You can add a dress that can be worn with flats, sandals, or boots in the fall. If you attend a high school that requires you to wear an uniform, no worries. You can still make a fashion statement by adding accessories such as a cute pair of earrings, a chunky bracelet or necklace, and some cute ballet flats or boat shoes. For the college students on a budget getting ready to go back to school, try Plato’s Closet or thrift stores in an expensive neighborhood to add nice pieces to your wardrobe that won't break your pockets. You can recreate this denim shirt dress (at bottom) by getting a man’s denim button down shirt and tailor it to fit your shape. Pair that with some heels to go out or some flats to wear to class. That's all for now. Happy shopping! ttyl...

Does Education and “Street Smarts” go hand in hand?
Street Smarts We went to UrbanDictionary.com to find out the meaning of “street smarts” Street SmartsIntelligence gained outside of school. Just as useful as book smarts, and in many cases more so. It can be divided into 4 categories.
Education vs Street Smarts Written By: Lateefah Ragland
Oftentimes, we place so much emphasis on graduating high school and going to college. We have all been given that speech that in order to become successful in life we must attain an education. A lot of this is due to the fact that in our historic past we were not allowed to learn. Our literate slave ancestors were punished, along with their educators. Sometimes that punishment meant losing their lives. Most of our ancestors were not formally educated but they had their own form of survival skill sets, or “street smarts”, that insured their existence and ours. Not much is said about “street smarts.” Formal education can take you to the next level in life, but can street smarts do the same? Is it possible to survive without one or the other? For every successful entrepreneur that is college educated there is one that isn’t: Mary Kay Ash, creator of Mary Kay; Gabrielle Coco Chanel, famous designer that is even more famous for the cologne bearing her name, Chanel No. 5; Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple; Tyra Banks, high-fashion model and owner of Bankable Enterprises; Michael Dell, creator of Dell Inc.; Bill Gates, creator of Microsoft Corp.; and Henry Ford, creator of Ford Motor Company, just to name a few. There are many entrepreneurs that made it without even a high school diploma: Milton Hershey, creator of Hershey’s Milk Chocolate; Shawn Carter, hip-hop artist known as Jay- Z / co-founder of Roc-A-Fella Records, creator of Roc-A-Fella clothing line, part owner of the New Jersey Nets and the 40/40 club; Carl Lindner, creator of United Dairy Farmers who later purchased Chiquita Brands International; and the
8
late Dave Thomas, founder and former Chief Executive Officer of Wendy’s fast food restaurants who got his GED at the age of 61. When you include people that became millionaires and not necessarily business owners the list grows even longer: Gisele Bundchen (high fashion model), Simon Cowell (American Idol judge), and George Foreman (former boxer that became $140 million dollars richer from granting Salton the use of his name on the George Foreman Grill). This is proof that with business savvy, skill or talent, and determination, you may not necessarily need education. The Free dictionary defines “street smart” as having the shrewd resourcefulness needed to survive in an urban environment or showing mental alertness, calculation and resourcefulness. Education does not guarantee that you will get your dream job or run a Fortune 500 company. Without putting in the work to become all that you desire in life, a diploma and degree are just scrap paper. The people listed above didn’t have a whole lot of education, but they were “street smart”; they had knowledge that they developed throughout life along with the common sense to utilize these attributes in a way to become wealthy and famous. “Street smarts” cannot be taught in a classroom; street smarts are taught in the school of life. Education alone will get you nowhere, but if you can back that formal education up with some “street smarts” anything is possible. Education does help to make you more marketable and looks excellent on a resume, but there is something to be said about that certain it factor that “street smarts” gives you.
1. Getting Along With Others- Knowing which questions to ask and not asking too many, being polite and friendly, but also being assertive. 2. Common Sense- Knowing who you can trust, which areas in town are good and which are bad, etc. 3. Self-defense-Knowing how to fight and fend off an attacker, especially if you are small. 4. BS-detection-Knowing when people are trying to fuck you over, reading their intentions, and knowing that most corporate advertisements are complete bullshit. There you have it! Although I do value an education and I think it’s extremely important to have one, people must also have common sense or, better yet, “street smarts” to survive in the world. Have you ever met someone with all the book smarts in the world but when it came to “street smarts” they were so.......... clueless? ~MsiCandi~

African Centered Education By Brotha Insight This month we are discussing education. Here are some key nuggets from an article by Dr. Jacob Carruthers. The African-centered education campaign is related to the chronic failure of the education system to provide equal educational results and opportunities for African Americans. But even if African American students were equally successful in terms of education achievements, the African-centered curriculum would still be necessary. Indeed, African American students who excel in school are as deprived of cultural equality as are those who fail. Thus, self-esteem as conventionally understood is not a central issue because many African Americans, including most high achievers, have positive self-concepts. What many African Americans suffer from is the pervading negative image of African peoples of whom they are descendants. One would expect that improving the image of one's social or ethnic group would have a positive effect on one's self image. Indeed all students suffer from these negative images of Africa and its people. Such deprivation is criminal in view of the fact that the negative images are the product of intellectual fabrications that were designed to justify racial exploitation and injustice especially slavery, colonialism, segregation and the denial of economic, social and political equality to persons of African descent. The problem of teaching about Africa is thus deeply embedded in the curriculum philosophy which is in turn based upon modern European philosophy. The lowest point of modern western philosophy was the inclusion of arguments for white supremacy and "Negro" inferiority in philosophical writings during the 18th and 19th centuries. The prestige of some of the thinkers compounds the evil. David Hume (On National Character), Charles Montesquieu (The Spirit of the Laws), and George Hegel (The Philosophy of History) were the forerunners for writers like Thomas Carlyle (The Nigger Question) and Joseph Gobineau (The Inequality of the Human Races) who were in turn forerunners of Adolph Hitler. The modern fabricators of the doctrine of white supremacy firmly attached the insidious argument to the concept of western civilization. The result was the creation of the idea that the white race had performed a cultural miracle and broken with the superstitious cultures of remote antiquity. According to this, the ancient Greek pioneers had provided a mighty foundation for the development of the highest culture known to humankind. Thus, civilization in is true form started among Europeans, while the other continental cultures were still retarded in barbarism of savagery. The evolutionary cultural hierarchy that emerged placed African culture firmly on the bottom and European or western civilization at the top. Thus, while all cultures other than the western European one were degraded, Africa occupied a unique position. Africans were removed from history through this world view. Africa, as Hegel put it, "is no historical part of the world" (Hegel, p.99). Indeed, the differences between the civilizations originating on the Eurasian continent and Africa are mostly depicted as qualitative and not merely attributed to a stage of development. In view of the western philosophical project of historical and cultural genocide against African peoples, the African-centered curriculum is essential. The first and most important reason is to restore the truth to the curriculum. The falsification of the role of Africa in world history and civilization results not only in a deformation of African history but the history of the world, especially since Africa has played such a decisive part in the events that comprise world history. The correction of this mutilation is surely in the interest of humanity, if the truth is at all relevant to human development. I hope this article was helpful. Remember we canʼt depend on anyone else to educate us properly but us. PEACE & BLESSINGS “BROTHA INSIGHT” Written by: Dr. Jacob Carruthers & Brotha Insight

The wind, the night, the dark, the rain yet in the storm it glows in the flux of simple ignorance the seed of learning grows for every man and woman same was born to strive this way to pave into the unknown night to bring the coming day no wolves, or thieves or threat of death could take this goal from thee and so the true are left to march unto infinity To strive, to learn, the greatest thing the best that you can do in utter failure is still no defeat if you rise to make it through.

MsiCandi & The Go2Gurl Had a Fantasia Filled Weekend By MsiCandi
Team iCandi had a Fantasia-filled weekend! With Go2Gurl & I (MsiCandi) being two of Fantasia's fans, we made it our BUSINESS to check her out in Jacksonville for her two shows. First, she performed at the Outre Hair show, which was hosted by Derek J (Atlanta Housewives & Hair Battle Spectacular) and Ms Nicki. Day Two of “The Fantasia Chase” was at The Riverview Apartments' GRAND OPENING. We waited out in the hot sun for hours standing in one spot for HOURS (y'all know how much I despise sweating...only for Tasia)! The weekend was just wonderful!! We were happy with just seeing our girl “bo bo” around singing our favorite songs. An added bonus was when Fantasia decided to announce her pregnancy and being that I tend to document EVERYTHING I was recording the whole thing. Our video has been all over the media (internet & television) WORLDWIDE! It would only make sense that Fantasia would have something to do with getting iCandi’s name out there!
WE LOVE YOU TASIA!!! To check out the NOW famous iCandi video go to www.youtube.com/icanditv

A Note From MsiCandi Hey Everybody! I hope you all enjoyed this month’s Newsletter. If this just isn’t enough and you want more Candi this month, be sure to check out our website (www.icandipro.com) and our daily shows on iCandi Radio (www.blogtalkradio.com/icandiradio). I guarantee once you tune in you will come back for more. I want to remind you all that perfection is boring. Cut yourselves a break. We all have flaws, we all make mistakes, and we are all human. I find myself sometimes trying to be sooooo perfect that I forget that. I get caught up in trying to please everybody or worrying about what people will say or think about me that I lose who I am. I know how much you all love me being ME and I love you being YOU! So embrace your imperfections, learn from your mistakes, and be a blessing to someone. I hope you all have a fantastic month and I’ll be back next month! ~MsiCandi~
