and infection prevention, assuring people in our communities that they are safe in our hands. We continue to foster a culture that treats employees, patients, visitors and all we encounter with Dignity, Inclusion, Respect, and Compassion. Our commitment to a diverse and inclusive culture remains the same. And one step at a time, we are helping the communities we serve rebuild their trust in emergency rooms and hospitals by dispelling fear brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Safety is always a top priority, and now is a time to show our patients we have a safe, clean environment for everyone who walks through our doors. During this time, I also want to remind you there are many resources available to help your family and you take care of your behavioral health.

A True Celebration

Such a heartfelt 35th birthday celebration for our patient Lakreisha! Lakreisha had a severe stroke on March 2 and after neurosurgery, she was in ICU. Then the pandemic hit. She moved to our neuro and stroke specialty unit, then rehabilitation, and wow! It’s three months later.

A True Celebration

Lakreisha couldn’t walk or say words, and now she’s singing along, and getting strong.

Unparalleled Service Newly Appointed Safety Officers

Pathway to Excellence Update

VP of Operations Patra Katsigiannis (Photo L) and VP of Operations Nisha Mills (Photo R) recently assumed two important roles at RMC in addition to their day to day responsibilities. Patra will take over as Ethics and Compliance Officer and Nisha will assume the role of Facility Privacy Officer.

We are active in the next phase of our Pathway to Excellence re-designation. This effort is all about an extra focus on nursing practice - helping us align priorities for patient care and better meet the career needs of nurses from many generations and backgrounds. Pathway to Excellence is a journey helping identify opportunities and taking action for our dedicated and educated nursing teams. This is why your input is so important to our Pathway re-designation. In July, nurses will be asked to participate in a self-assessment survey. We will be sharing more about that soon but please plan to participate!

Leader in Neuro/Ortho/Trauma Boris Usherenko was on his routine morning run when he was suddenly struck by a car. First responders quickly arrived on scene and delivered Boris to Overland Park Regional Medical Center where he was later transferred to Research Medical Center. Boris suffered critical injuries to his right arm, right leg, spine, neck and more. Boris’ injuries required the attention of multiple expert orthopedic and neuro providers at RMC. He underwent many surgeries and showed dedication in his daily physical and occupational therapy. Boris spent 45 days with our expert staff learning how to walk again. In fact, on his final day as an inpatient at RMC he was able to take steps without his walker for the first time since his accident. This is a new way of life for Boris who typically is an avid runner and a life-long architect. Boris’ positive spirit and cheerful smile kept the RMC staff feeling like family. If you have a problem, if no one else can help, maybe you can hire the E-Team! Join the ECHO Team to help Research Medical Center employees in need during their June campaign. Learn more about the ECHO Team and become a member at theresearchfoundationkc.org/echo

The Research Foundation expanded the scope of the ECHO Team's support due to the COVID-19 health pandemic. Employee Assistance Fund requests due to loss of hours and/or loss of income of an employee or spouse are now considered. Our COVID-19 relief efforts helped this Research employee: “I was laid off from my part-time job at Research Medical Center in March. I was still working at Lee’s Summit Medical Center, but reduced to 12 hours. I was no longer working 65 hours a week or more. All of this transpired when COVID-19 hit our state. My son was sent home from college and hardly any income was coming into my home. My bills accumulated very quickly. I applied for assistance through the employee assistance fund and within 48 hours my application was accepted. They did everything possible to make sure my immediate needs were taken care of. I am grateful for this program because I would not have a home if it wasn’t for the ECHO Team. They gave me hope and belief all over again. Thank you for saving me and my son.”
