Integrity Compassion Always Respect Excellence
Dear Research Family It’s been five years since I came to Research as CEO! When I came to Research on February 4, 2014, I committed to positive change. My very first week I began meeting with Research employees, leaders, physicians, board members, politicians, and community and outreach partners. I asked these five questions and then listened openly: 1. What are the most important things (top five) about RMC that we should be sure to preserve and why? 2. What are the top three things we need to change and why? 3. What do you most hope I do? 4. What are you most concerned I might do? 5. What advice do you have for me? Listening is part of who we are and positive change happens when our organization is in tune with employees, medical staff, our community and other key stake holders. We developed these three Strategic Initiatives in 2014 that remain in 2019. Our strategic focus areas and departmental goals change but we are moving this organization forward by:

I feel very good about our journey. The past five years and especially 2018, have taught us a lot about top performance. It takes focus and commitment by everyone on the team. Our quest to perform at the top in the nation is full speed ahead! I’m thrilled you are on this journey with Team Research. Sincerely,

Transplant Institute Patient Testimonial

Patrick is the first patient in the Kansas City region to receive a kidney transplant from a donor with a polycystic kidney. After five years of living with kidney disease and just 10 months of being on the transplant wait list, doctors at Research’s Transplant Institute gave Patrick the option of receiving a donor kidney that had been rejected by other candidates. Extensive medical research and evaluation went into this decision. Patrick chose to accept the kidney. This decreased his time on the wait list and now, six months after his transplant, he is enjoying a good life with his five grandkids and his wife of 33 years. Above All Else, We Are Committed to the Care and Improvement of Human Life Giving each patient and their family the best patient experience is a top priority at every Research entity. This means every patient, every time and every touch. Always. Not Sometimes, Not Usually. Always. When patients take the time to let us know they had a great experience, we’ll share.
Trauma “We found a culture of kindness at Research Medical Center coupled with experts in trauma care.” Grossman Burn Center “My husband transferred to the Grossman Burn center at Research. Dr. Megan Garcia and her team were wonderful. They lovingly cared for him while treating his injuries.” Research Psychiatric Center “I can say, without a doubt, that Research’s psychiatrists, nurses, techs and other employees there are a huge reason I’m still around to pursue the dreams I hoped for. Thank you for seeing me at my most vulnerable moments and treating me with total dignity.” Labor and Delivery ‘‘I have had all 3 of my kids at Research the nurses and doctors are amazing especially the NICU nurses they did such an amazing job with my little 4lb baby girl to get her home as soon as possible.” All Staff “My experience at Research Hospital was like nothing I’ve seen. I have had a lot of dealing with hospitals with aging parents and nothing compared to my visit. From the ER to my release, I didn’t have one complaint. I had awesome nurses, testing was quick and results were quicker. I even liked the meals. I’ve joked around with my family about it being a staycation. Big thanks to all of everyone there!!”

Healthy Habits Superfood Spotlight: Chiles The Superfood of the Month is chiles. The spelling of this superfood varies based on region —“chile” is the preferred Spanish spelling, while the US and Canada use “chili”. Chiles, chilies, chili peppers, or simply peppers all refer to the fruit of plants from the Capsicum family. Capsaicin is the compound within peppers that causes spiciness. The amount of capsaicin in peppers is used to determine ranking on the Scoville scale. Bell peppers for example are not spicy (due to low capsaicin level) and have a 0 on the Scoville scale. Ancho, bell pepper, cayenne, habanero, and jalapeno are commons types of chiles. Chiles are rich in Vitamin C — an antioxidant important for wound healing and immune health. Stop by the cafeteria this month for more information, recipes, and products featuring chiles! Provided by: Courtney Schneider, RN, LD, Clinical Dietitian
