This week I have spent time in several departments listening and learning. I hear many employees talk about our rich history in Kansas City and our family atmosphere. I also hear about opportunities to make our workplace even better. I appreciate you sharing as we get to know one another. It’s been a “Summer of Success” and I want to say congratulations to the entire Research Family. We completed a successful trauma survey, earned Comprehensive Stroke Recertification, performed the region’s first custom hip implant surgery, cared for our first patient in our new BMT program, earned AHA Cardiac Get With the Guidelines Gold Plus, successfully worked through several compliance surveys and so much more. Thank you for the commitment, It is my honor to join the Research Family!

Patient Testimonials Oncology When 26-year-old Hannah Engling began feeling unusually tired and noticed she was bruising easily, she went to see her doctor. After learning the results of blood work, she was referred to Dr. Frank Slovick, Hematology/Oncology specialist with the Sarah Cannon Cancer Center at RMC. Hannah was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia. Then after more tests, and treatments of chemotherapy, Hannah and her family learned her condition is controllable and treatable. Now Hannah is back to sewing. You see, Hannah is a professional tie-maker, so who did she custom make a tie for right away? Dr. Slovick, the brilliant, kind man who helped her get her life back. Learn more about Oncology services available at RMC sarahcannoncancercenter.com
Orthopedics Clift “Milt” Taylor chose Orthopedic Surgeon, Brian Kindred, MD, because he is one of the only specialists in the region performing custom knee implant surgery. Custom designed knee replacement leads to better outcomes. Milt is now able to go on two-to-three-mile walks with his wife every evening, and is having fun chasing his six grandkids. He is also remodeling his home laying tile on his knees, pain free! Milt is thankful for Dr. Kindred and the team at Research Orthopedics and Sports Medicine. In fact, he plans to get his left knee replaced by Dr. Kindred next spring. Find your doctor at mymidwestphysician.com

Team Ulman Visits Sarah Cannon Cancer Center

Tiffani Kintchen was receiving chemo therapy when she learned the Ulman runners were visiting Research Medical Center. A runner herself with a daughter headed to the Track and Field Junior Olympics soon, Tiffani said to the team, “Keep running the race. It’s what we do every day. Keep running the race.” So who is Team Ulman? Each summer, Ulman recruits a new team of runners and cyclers. These teams create a community of support for young adults impacted by cancer as they run or cycle 4,500+ miles across America. The funds they raise support patients fighting cancer. researchmedicalcenter.com/service/cancer-care

Above All Else, We Are Committed to the Care and Improvement of Human Life Giving each patient and their family the best patient experience is a top priority at every Research entity. This means every patient, every time, and every touch. Always. Not Sometimes, Not Usually. Always. When patients take the time to let us know they had a great experience, we’ll share.
All Staff “Very caring hospital, I enjoy going to research. They help with everything. Just Awesome!” Labor and Delivery “I highly recommend Research Medical Center if you are having a baby! The hospital staff is awesome! Every step of the way we were treated wonderfully and they always made sure we were comfortable or let us know where or what we could do if we did need anything. The NICU staff is great - they are all wonderful ladies. They are fully dedicated to the babies and it shows 100%. I am blown away how great my experience was not only for me but for our baby that arrived 5 weeks early. We have a hospital near us and are so thankful we drive a little further out! Thanks Research!!” Emergency Department “I was having difficulty breathing and stomach muscle spasms and pain. My nurse Aaron took me quickly to a room in the ER within minutes many other nurses appeared with each doing different procedures while keeping me calm. As I was being assessed I was being told what they were doing and why. I just can’t thank everyone in my room enough for their tender care and real concern after scheduling a CT scan they were able to identify the issues I was having. I give the ER group who helped me a positive 10. Job well done.” Brookside Campus Outpatient Services “The reception, waiting room and tech are top notch professionals with a friendly caring attitude.”

Healthy Habits Superfood Spotlight: Tomato Technically a fruit, we have referred to the tomato as a vegetable since 1893 when the government classified them for trading purposes. However, tomatoes are different from other fruits as they contain less calories and sugar. Nutrients in this brightly colored food include vitamin A & C, alpha- and beta-carotene, lutein and lycopene. Along with eating them raw, tomatoes can be prepared in many different ways including roasting, grilling, stewing or reducing in soups, sauces and jams.
