May 2018 Integrity Compassion Always Respect Excellence
Dear Research Family, What a great week! I hope you are taking the opportunity to enjoy some warm weather! May is Stroke and Trauma Awareness Month. Research is a certified Level 1 Time Critical Diagnosis program in Stroke and Trauma, and this week we earned Level 1 STEMI status for the Triple Crown! This is great timing to share this news next week during EMS Week. We will be honoring EMS all week, and on Wednesday we will host a GREAT SAVE event. We will be honoring patients and the first responders who helped save their lives. When you see EMS professionals next week, please thank them for trusting us and bringing patients to us. May is also Mental Health Awareness Month so here’s a shout to our Research Psychiatric Center and our all employees caring for behavioral health patients. We are a regional leader in behavioral health care in the region too! Dr. Riggs was live on KCTV 5 recently sharing about new fertility treatments. This segment has been shared and viewed by thousands. Dr. Riggs and Dr. Starks help so many families who otherwise would not be able to grow their families.

Research neurosurgeon Dr. Rosenberg offers chronic pain expertise to patients all across the region and even the world. He participated in this segment on KSHB 41 last week. This too is being viewed and shared by thousands, and Dr. Rosenberg’s schedule continues to fill with patients needing his help. See the piece on Facebook or go to the web page below. https://www.kshb.com/news/local-news/doctor-successful-with-alternative-to-opioids There’s only one week left! Please be sure to take the Employee Engagement Survey. Response has been great but it would super to hear from more employees by May 25. Please go to http:// hcasurveys.com/ as soon as you can! The May Superfood of the Month is avocados. Avocados are fruits (yes, despite the lack of sweetness) that offer hearthealthy fats that help boost absorption of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K. Avocados are simple to use, but often finding a perfectly ripe avocado is tricky. Ripe avocados have a dark green-to-black color and yield to gentle pressure. Another way to check avocado ripeness is the stem. If the stem cannot easily be plucked, the avocado is not ready to eat. If the stem does come off easily, check the color. A greenish-yellow color under the stem means the avocado is ready to eat, while a brown color means the avocado is likely overripe and will have brown flesh. Try adding avocado to salads, sandwiches, tacos, soups, and smoothies for a dose of fiber and vitamins A and C. Stop by the Superfood table outside of the cafeteria this month for more information, products, and recipes featuring avocados! Provided by Courtney Schneider, RN, LD, Clinical Dietitian
