IT Update Welcome to Marlin Sams, our new Sr. Director IT, assigned to Research Medical Center! In the few days that Marlin has been here, he has quickly brought forward ideas that will enable his department to address IT concerns in an efficient and responsive manner. A new system for ordering equipment will soon be introduced and a review of outstanding IT issues is a high priority. Manager of Technology Tom McFarlin was recently hired to also support the technicians at RMC, RPC, RCON, and Belton. Improvements to service will include quicker access to programs via ‘role based’ needs, review of the employee transfer process between departments or positions so access is not interrupted, and more timely eSAF request responses. If you are experiencing IT issues, please use the Service Central icon on the desktops to submit a ticket. Marlin and his team will rely on this system to identify issues and prioritize their work. They are committed to improving the turn-around time to address your needs.

Top Box Physician Communication
Open patient and physician communication means so much. Sarah Cannon Cancer Center patient Phyllis Garnett was curious about the cell makeup of the tumor that was removed from her breast. Medical Oncologist Dr. Stephanie Graff contacted Pathologist Dr. Omar Hameed who sat down with Phyllis and her husband. The discussion was educational and emotional. Phyllis said she feels so lifted up after seeing and hearing an explanation for every one of her questions. If you or you loved one would like a second opinion or a private consultation, our physicians are here to help. Visit mymidwestphysician.com.
Sandra was diagnosed with breast cancer in July of 2018 and has been receiving treatment at Sarah Cannon Cancer Center at Research Medical Center under the care of Dr. Stephanie Graff. To date, her treatment has included a mastectomy and chemotherapy. Verda’s Place and the team at Sarah Cannon Cancer Center at Research Medical Center have worked closely with Sandra over the past year to provide her with two bras with special prosthetic inserts as well as a prosthetic wig. Sandra said battling cancer is not an easy road, but Dr. Graff showed her love and inspired her to get her spirit back. Mammography is the best defense against breast cancer, schedule yours today! Vital Voices Onboarding and Exit Surveys Starting October 1, Research Medical Center will start two new Vital Voices email surveys to hear directly from team members at two critical points in their career journey: • •
New colleagues at Research Medical Center who reach the 45 and 100 day marks of employment will be asked to complete a short survey about their onboarding experience. Glint is the vendor who administers the Vital Voices surveys. Similarly, colleagues who decide to leave will receive an exit survey to help enhance the employment experience for others.
The process is somewhat similar to the regular Vital Voices surveys, and will require no extra work for managers. Team members will receive an automated e-mail from Glint. The survey is designed for mobile devices and will take less than five minutes. Comments are welcome on each question. Responses are confidential and will only be reported to HR teams once enough responses are collected to maintain anonymity; your manager won’t see your responses. These new feedback options at the beginning and end of employment helps identify trends and create meaningful changes that can improve the overall experience for patients and colleagues.
Transplant Institute Picnic The Transplant Institute team at Research celebrated transplant recipients, living donors and patients on the waitlist at our annual picnic.
ER Leader Dr. Eppler on KCTV 5 Dr. Jason Eppler, emergency department medical director discusses the importance of knowing when to bring teens to the emergency room following an injury or accident. To learn more about RMC’s emergency services, visit researchmedicalcenter.com/service/emergency-care

Oncology “Professional caring staff. I Followed Dr. Kelley Young to Research and it was the best decision I have made in a long time!” Research Psychiatric Center “I was taken to the Adolescent Unit at Research Psychiatric Center. I couldn’t thank the staff over there enough. They made me feel safe, cared for, and actually worth something. Latrice made me feel like I could get through anything and everything. Tucker and Matt were such an incredible duo, I can’t thank them enough for what they did for me. The therapists were incredible as well. Especially Melissa, she is everything you could ever ask for in a therapist. From the bottom of my heart, thank you all.” Emergency Department “We took my dad to Research and I couldn’t have been more impressed with the staff and doctors. Not only were they so organized but also they were very compassionate. Also how clean the hospital was blow me away. We have been in and out of several hospitals the past two years with my parents and I have to be honest, my experience with Research has been the best.” Cardiology “A big thank you to Dr. Seligson and the amazing staff at Research Medical Center. My family member recently had open heart surgery. He is feeling great one week after surgery. Our heartfelt thanks for excellent care.” Women’s Services/Surgical Services “I had a baby via c-section at Research. Healthy Habits HAPPENINGS Superfood Spotlight: Pumpkin
BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
The super food for the month of October is pumpkins! Used for jack-o’-lanterns at Halloween and pumpkin pies at Thanksgiving, pumpkins are an essential part of the fall season. This time of year, pumpkins are incorporated into about every food imaginable – stews, curries, cookies, pies, breads, lattes and many other sweet and savory snacks. Pumpkins are an annual vine that belong to the same family as squash, cucumbers, watermelons, and gourds. In addition to eating the flesh of pumpkins, pumpkin seeds are delicious roasted, sautéed or raw. Pumpkins are 90% water and low in calories, but are packed with nutrients including fiber, iron, magnesium, zinc, vitamin A, vitamin C and B-Complex vitamins.
