It’s also time for a new round of Research Employee Town Hall meetings and we’re gearing up for Hospital Week, Nurse’s Week, and the 2016 Employee Engagement Survey! Corrine Henderson from Food Service is a star employee! I spent time delivering meals with her recently. I was so impressed and amazed by how she personally connected with her patients. She takes great pride in making sure their meals were ordered correctly and delivered hot. She nails AIDET every time! She’s worked at RMC for more than 30 years! We are so fortunate to have Corrine and so many other employees like her who love their job and love their patients. Our new Medical Office Building lobby looks fabulous and admitting (now called Hospital Patient Registration) has moved. We continue to work out a few bumps, and thank you to all employees who are taking time to help patients find their way! Just imagine what A Level of Research Medical Center will look like in a couple months. So many nice improvements are happening. We are also working plans to improve the experience for CAPPS (Center for Ancillary Prep and Procedure Services) patients and visitors who use the front lobby. Remember new wall covering and flooring is nothing without you. Patients and their families notice but more than anything, they notice YOU. This brings me to the upcoming Town Hall meetings. I really need to hear from YOU – that’s why each Research employee needs to select a Town Hall session and come! Your supervisor will help you if you are having trouble getting this into your schedule. Free breakfast or lunch will be served at each session. See the details on pg. 3. ER of Brookside is sponsoring the Brookside Art Fair April 29 - May 1. Mark your calendar to bring your family. There’s a kid’s tent on Saturday and Sunday with all kinds of fun activities. Look for more information about other happenings on pg. 19.
Sincerely, facebook.com/researchmedicalcenter

Deliver Exceptional Care
DAISY Award Honorees January - Lauren Frudenburg, RN ER “My Nurse Lauren made me very comfortable and was very attentive to my pain. I’ve never had a nurse as kind and caring as her. Not only was Lauren nice, she was also professional and extremely quick at tasks and takes care of business. Lauren is the best nurse I’ve ever had the experience of being treated with kindness, respect and a wonderful attitude and personality.” “My nurse Lauren spoke to me with kindness and understanding. She was truly concerned about my comfort. The ED had ran out of blanket so she wrapped me up with towels and sheets. She really made me feel as if she was taking care of me like family. She made me better, not just in my body, but my spirit. If I could only have her as my nurse at all time I would.”
February - Carolyn Bethel, LPN 6th floor “Being cared for by someone as genuinely caring as Carolyn makes being in the hospital a little more pleasant. After eight days in the ICU, moving to Carolyn’s care felt somewhat like going home. She responded to my husband’s requests and questions with so much heart and generosity. She also embraced me and my 12 year-old twin girls. She asked questions to engage the girls and really seemed to want to know about our family. With Carolyn around we began to feel like everything would be alright.”

Above All Else, We Are Committed to the Care and Improvement of Human Life Giving each patient and their family the best patient experience is a top priority at every Research entity. This means every patient, every time and every touch. Always. Not Sometimes, Not Usually. Always. When patients take the time to let us know they had a great experience, we’ll share them. Grossman Burn Center
“The nurses and physicians at Grossman Burn Center are absolutely phenomenal. They took very good care of my mother, always making sure she was comfortable and cared for during her stay. The nurses are so compassionate. When the time came to say goodbye to my mother they provided a lot of comfort and gave me unlimited to time say goodbye. Surgeon Dr. Megan Garcia was also amazing. She explained everything completely. All my questions were answered.
ER, Neurology and Nursing
“Erin and Dr. Jason Eppler took great care of me in the emergency room. I can’t remember the registrar at the emergency room’s name that helped my wife but it was a short name that started with a “K”. Dr. Eppler was very knowledgeable and I could tell the process for seeing if I had a stroke was well organized. The ER was very busy but I always felt well taken care of. Dr. Eppler couldn’t have been better to us. My daughter-in-law’s co-workers Patrick, Shannon, Kirsten and Michael stopped by to check on my wife and I. I could tell they really cared about how I was doing and offered my family to get whatever they needed. Thank you to Lexi, Adam, Heather “George” and Candice, my main nurses for all you did to take care of me. The best nurses around. Aric did a great job in the imaging department. Also, David, Tiffany and Nikki in rehab were really good. I enjoyed talking to Nikki Anderson about Manhattan, KS. Thank you to Dr. Ahmed who spoke very softly and calmly and was meticulous with my care. From what everyone told me there that he was the best and an expert. And, he definitely was. He really cares about his patients. It made us feel very good. Of course I would never choose to go to any hospital for fun but because of Dr. Iftekhar Ahmed and all of the staff that took care of me, I want to thank them for all they did for me. I hope to continue to heal and get better.”
Life Flight, ER and Research Team
“My wife was life flighted to this hospital on March 11. The doctors and staff was here ready to save her life. With their help and Gods help, we will make a full recovery. Fantastic experience at Research Hospital!”

Teaching teenagers the importance of road safety RoadWise is a program for young drivers 14-19, emphasizing the importance of wearing a seat belt, making good decisions behind the wheel and not driving distracted. Participants follow the path they would take at a trauma center after being seriously injured in a car crash by visiting the Emergency Room, Radiology, Intensive Care and Physical Therapy. Lunch is spent with young people who have sustained a permanent brain or spinal cord injury as a result of a motor-vehicle crash. The Missouri State Highway Patrol also visits to talk about working crash sites and the daunting task of making death notifications to families.

RPC Employee MerleJams to Show Gratitude Merle Zuel, an employee at Research Psychiatric Center for over a year, has always had a passion for music and giving back to his community. In founding MerleJam, Merle has found a way to combine his passions for the benefit of those he holds closest. Merle was diagnosed with a defective aortic valve when he was 10 years old and ultimately experienced congestive heart failure at the age of 34. He had a pacemaker/ defibrillator implanted, which he contributes as having saved his life on several occasions. In November 2005 Merle was given a mechanical aortic valve to serve as a bridge to the transplant. Upon placement on the national heart transplant waitlist on December 18, 2006, Merle was given a second chance at life from a very generous donor family on February 23, 2007. “I have not met my donor family, but view every donor family as my donor family because my life was saved by an organ donor. I have been a national speaker for Astellas Transplant Experience program, speaking to patient groups and professionals at several prominent medical centers and have appeared on the Dr. Oz show in 2009 shortly after my self-published book “Hearts Like Mine” was released,” said Merle. Merle’s love for music and wanting to share his message of gratitude for transplantation and donor families he founded the benefit concert, MerleJam. The first MerleJam was May 2007, less than three months after his own heart transplant. The two day event is held annually on first weekend in May and features Country music on Friday and Blues/Rock on Saturday. This year the event falls on May 6th and 7th. Please go to www.merlejam.com for more info and tickets.
