Integrity Compassion Always Respect Excellence

Research earned five stars in Orthopedics, Neurosciences, Pulmonary, Vascular and Critical Care. We also earned the Stroke Care Excellence Award for being at the five-star level for more than three years. And our Stroke Care is Top 10% in the nation for patient outcomes. Congratulations! We’re one of the best hospitals in the nation and in the Kansas City region. Speaking of excellence, earning our Pathway designation is an amazing accomplishment. We are the first in Kansas City and in our HCA Midwest Health division to achieve this! This designation is a lot about outstanding nursing but it’s also about all the departments who support and rally with nursing for the best patient care! Thank you for loving your patients and your co-workers.

10 Deliver Exceptional Care

August DAISY Award Honoree Carolyn Waldrop, RN - ICU “After unexpected surgery on my father’s leg, Carolyn was my father’s nurse on the second day. Being an only child I carry all the weight on my shoulders. After days of little or no sleep I started to have a break down. I tried to hide it but Carolyn noticed right away. She stopped her charting, knelt down beside me, talked to me as a daughter, mother, wife, and a nurse for 15 minutes. Those 15 minutes of her time were exactly what I needed. I have been a nurse for 19 years and appreciate the time she gave me and those words of kindness will be in my heart always.”

July DAISY Award Honoree Christy Turner, RN - Labor & Delivery “Before my surgery I prayed to God that he bless me with good people. When I met Christy on the night I had surgery I was sure she was an ANGEL. This was my first time staying in a hospital and I did not know the roles nurses take on. But Christy treated me as if she loved me. I literally cried due to her compassion. She made sure I was comfortable in bed, she fed me ice, water and soup. She helped me use the bathroom and she occasionally held my hand. She constantly encouraged my recovery. I appreciate her so much. I can’t believe she is a real person!”

Above All Else, We Are Committed to the Care and Improvement of Human Life Giving each patient and their family the best patient experience is a top priority at every Research entity. This means every patient, every time and every touch. Always. Not Sometimes, Not Usually. Always. When patients take the time to let us know they had a great experience, we’ll share them.

CAPPS “Checked in yesterday so my husband could undergo a liver biopsy. Such amazing people in CAPPS! Took great care of both of us throughout the rather shortened process...seems after another ultrasound the radiologist determined that a biopsy was not necessary. The nursing staff was thrilled for my husband!! Excellent facility and such warm hearted staff. Our thanks to the CAPPS Unit.”

Labor & Delivery and Midwifery “I had a great experience delivering at Research. Phenomenal midwife, nurses and staff. I cannot say enough good things about my nurses during delivery, they really made a difference in my experience. Post delivery everyone was good as well! I was also surprised at how good our white tablecloth steak dinner was! And this review is almost 10 months postpartum & I remember the great people we encountered still.”

Research Psychiatric Center - VINE Unit “Dear Latoya & Trace, thank you so much for the outstanding assistance and genuine care you both provide towards all the patients! We appreciate the extra bond we have felt because it was not even in your job description. We have not felt judged or talked bad about. The two of you are angels, even stronger as a team, constantly pushing above and beyond to make hurting people a bit more relieved and comfortable. It would be impossible for even the most introverted patient to feel nervous or skeptical to approach either of you. We thank you for sending love to lost souls, we thank you for sending compassion from the deepest part of your soul. Sending gratitude to two special people that deserve the same care in return.”

The Grossman Burn Center and ER “I had to take my son in to the ER, had a allergic reaction to a medication applied on a burn. The nurses and doctors was amazing. There is not enough room to describe how thankful myself and family are to each one of them. They are our heroes. Along with Grossman burn unit staff. We have been shown nothing but the up most respect. Keep us updated on all information and treat him with dignity and respect. I absolutely love this hospital and all the staff.”

2016 Adopt-A-Family The holiday season is fast approaching. Without your help, many of our Research co-workers and their families will experience a very meager holiday season this year. We are appealing to your “heart” as much as your pocketbook when we ask for your help. Your generosity and bountiful spirit made it possible for many Research families to enjoy and celebrate holidays past. Last year, 33 families benefited from the collective generosity of 18 departments and physician partners. We are now planning the 2016 Adopt-A-Family program. Research employees who would like to be considered for adoption, the nomination forms are now available, and may be picked up in the Pastoral Care office on Mondays, Tuesdays or Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Forms are due to be completed and returned to the Pastoral Care office by November 14. All family adoptions are managed confidentially. If you and those in your department are interested in helping adopt our families, including those who work at the Brookside Campus, contact your supervisor, department director, your unit chaplain, or the Pastoral Care office at (816) 276-4120 or (816) 276-3530. All interested departments and individuals please respond by November 14. This will allow ample time to collect gifts and food, which will be distributed December 14 and 15 at the Research campus. Thank you for your generous holiday spirit. Many of our co-workers will be blessed thanks to your generosity.

Congratulations to Karly Guinn and Daniel Wilson, School of Nuclear Medicine Technology Graduating Class of 2016!

Congratulations to the participants for completing the 2016 Research Medical Center Summer ED Internship program. Terry Miller leads this program with more than 20 volunteers.

Swimming Patients to Safety During Flood During an evening storm that flooded many parts of Kansas City, Research employees were saving lives in and outside of the ER of Brookside. The Brookside area received five inches of rain in less than two hours. Security officer David Vogel and x-ray tech Mike Mills stepped outside the to check the weather. They saw a vehicle on Rockhill Drive stalled and flooded with two people inside. Mike and Dave stepped out into waist-high water to help the people get out of the car. One passenger had gotten out and they rescued the other from the vehicle. Then they swam helping the passengers get to safety. By this time water was over the car’s hood and chest-high on Mike. Everyone was safe thanks to our Research heroes.

Brightening up the ER Waiting Room Students from St. Elizabeth donated their works of art to the Research Brookside Campus. The art work is currently being displayed in the the ER of Brookside waiting room. Be sure to stop by and take a look!

Healthy Habits Superfood Spotlight - Pumpkins! It’s everyone’s favorite time of year, pumpkin season! To honor this popular vegetable, the October Superfood of the Month is the pumpkin. Pumpkins belong to the same family as cucumbers, watermelons, and gourds, and are rich in beta-carotene. Beta-carotene is a carotenoid responsible for giving pumpkins their characteristic orange color. While it isn’t recommended to eat pumpkin pie every day, research does suggest that a diet rich in beta-carotene may reduce risk of certain cancers, decrease inflammation, and improve skin appearance. Pumpkins are also a very good source of vitamin A. In fact, 245% of the recommended dietary allowance for the nutrient is found in a one cup serving. Try incorporating pumpkin into your diet in new ways this month such as in chili, hummus, or a smoothie, and be sure to stop by the Superfood Table outside of the cafeteria for recipes!
