Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder – Treatments and Therapy When tackling cases of PTSD, we believe in the benefits of open communication and the presence of a safe space where patients can process the traumatic event. Our counselling firm has 3 different methods that we rely on when it comes to dealing with this sort of case. Within your personalized treatment plan, you may be asked to undergo the following therapeutic procedures:
Neurofeedback Therapy This form of therapy was first introduced in the 1960s and is currently being utilized for the treatment of a patient’s trauma. This is used to gain an understanding of how your brain functions and what thoughts generate positive and negative reactions, allowing therapists to map out your brain and see what needs to be worked on. Common use cases for neurofeedback therapy include symptoms of Concussions, Anxiety, and Depressive Disorders.
Somatic Experiencing Beyond neurofeedback therapy, there’s also the use of Somatic Experiencing wherein a patient is subjected to a body-centric therapy regime. Compared to Exposure Therapy, you’ll find that Somatic therapy Experiencing only allows for this once the patient is willing and able to revisit the traumatic memory. From there, the therapist will help with cutting up the memory into smaller pieces for the patient to handle. This prevents a recurring sense of trauma from developing and allows them to slowly work through the entire memory.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EDMR) Another method used by our professionals here at ICBC Counselling Vancouver is the use of ICBC counselling EMDR. Available as an option for various cases of trauma, the process itself makes use of eye movements and their connection with the functions of the mind. This method doesn’t focus on altering the thoughts and responses of the patient in response to trauma. Rather, it tackles how memories are remembered and utilizes eye movement to diminish the effects of PTSD.
