LOCAL products & CUISINE - LEBANON

Goal: Promote local products and cuisine by bringing people of different regions and traditions together to celebrate food and food traditions Model: Coordinating a farmer’s market, a restaurant with farmer’s chefs, a private label food product, regional food frestivals and educational activities

Key Partners: Local farmers Tawlet Dekenet

Size & Reach: From 10 producers in 2004 to 70 in 2011 Key ingredients: Farmers market, training and consultancy

Background: In an area of globalized agriculture trade based on food imports, it has become harder and harder for local farmers to compete fairly in the market and preserve the culture of small farming in Lebanon. Souk el Tayeb was created in 2004 from an experimental farmers market promoting small-scale farmers and producers, to an organization working on both, national and international projects to promote and preserve culinary traditions, rural heritage and the natural environment.

Solution: Souk el Tayeb encourages organic, eco-friendly practices, leads research and educational campaigns about food traditions and heritage, and promotes organic foods and a healthy lifestyle. It improves smallholder farmers’ access to markets by connecting them to consumers who value traditional, high quality, natural products. It not only helps these farmers to get a fair price for their goods but preserves centuries old food traditions for future generations to enjoy. The company also runs a capacity building program, which is designed to build, reinforce and improve the skills of farmers, producers and cooks in both technical and non-technical ways. Impact: Inclusive Business Impact: Farmers receive fair prices for their produce and are also able to increase their farms’ yields through the capacity building program, thus increasing the smallholder’s income. Environmental Impact: Souk el Tayeb particularly encourages organic and eco-friendly farming to improve the quality of food and health in Lebanon. It teaches environmental awareness to future generations through educational campaigns, promotes green practices through public awareness campaigns. Moreover, it encourages regional and local traditions and food specialties, through food festivals and the farmers’ kitchens. Contact: Kamal Mouzawak kamal@soukeltayeb.com
