01 - Instant Polis: struggling between governance and autonomy, an urban strategie born for
Taiwan is a fascinating island with modern and civilized cities in the west, well-kept natural landscapes in the east. People appreciate the culturally-diverse nature of Taiwan, but they seldom notice that the difference of development also represents a problem of shortage of social resources.
Especially in the region of Nanhui, Taitung, which has been gradually ignored and forgotten because it is the most remote
corner of the island.
Throughout history, the tribes in the east had been ruthlessly suppressed and persecuted by several regimes, losing their families, territories, and culture. Today, with the constraints of the development of governance, the east region farthest from the capital of the nation has suffered from the problem of uneven distribution of resources which induced a sense of inferiority. Members of these local tribes have an obvious need for more space and autonomy. Both of these issues require a cross-region reintegration of social welfare.
A Type of Ranging from Aggregation to Distributiuon
outward growth, ftting to the fabric & multi-directional arrangement
Hence, I am asking two questions to respond to these issues, and to conceptualize the design of Instant Polis:
First, in the transition period before the construction of the infrastructure, are there any spatial planning strategies for the residents of Naihui to solve the uneven distribution of social welfare?
Second, once the infrastructure has been completed, how will the centralized and populated areas and become more activate this system?
Nanhui, Taitung, a quasi-city-state which is short of social welfare.
- Accessibility of medical resources: Taitung County covers an area of 3,500 km² and has a coastline of 178 km with only seven hospitals. Five of which are located in downtown Taitung, the other two are located in the north of downtown, while the south area has no hospital for a distance of nearly 100 km. Because of that, it’s hard to provide emergency relief assistance to residents of the south and people who figure in

accidents on the highway.
- Long-term care for the elderly: Taitung St. Mary's Hospital is the pioneer of Taitung’s long-term care services. They have set up the tribal kitchen to deliver meals to the disabled, poor elderly who live alone. But there is still a large area without this service, due to the lack of human resources and economic

get older, they go farther and farther to study because there are few places that offer academic assistance in their village.

system, such as railways, highways and roads, as the basis for the Towards Distributed Networks. Then, I created modular units with each required function for three aforementioned spatial problems as Polis Units.
Arranged by the transportation system, the modular units will be sent to villages and towns as micro-infrastructures to meet different needs.
Polis Units will be transported to the intersection or vacant lands in the villages, where people usually gather, as the Polis Node.
Polis Node is like the socket, waiting for the mobile units to plug into, supporting water and electricity.
When the aggregation of units is quite large with diverse services and events, it becomes an Instant Polis, appearing and
After a service cycle, the Polis Units rejoin the tour of Towards Distributed Networks again, going back to downtown
04 - Conclusion
To sum it all up, Instant Polis integrates every single original well-functioning service in Taitung to become a more welfare infrastructure.
It can help to distribute human resources and social welfare by using Towards
Distributed Networks and Polis Units, and may cooperate with other befitting projects in the future to integrate them into the system of Instant Polis.
As for the Polis Node set up in the daily activities of the tribe. It’s the core of Instant Polis, to try to keep both traditional and modern cultural activities.

In the abstract machine studio, I chose traditional handicrafts as the concept to develop my design. I have always been interested in traditional handicrafts. I chose four crafts that I was interested in: weaving, cotton fluffing for making the quilt, hand-pulled candy-making and pottery. I tried to simulate and interpret these handicrafts to complete my design.
I chose four historical spaces in Twatutia, Taipei as the sites for the four abstract machines. Twatutia was an important trading port in the Qing Dynasty. Then it gradually declined at the end of the Japanese occupation because of the
suppression from Japanese merchants, who were preventing local businesses from making a profit, and the siltation of the Tamsui river year by year. As time passed, Twatutia has become a famous historical tourist attraction and shopping district in Taipei. With my designs of the abstract machines, I want to make people experience this district through four traditional handicrafts.
01.Plaza of Yong-Le Fabric Market: weaving machine
The plaza next to Yong-Le Fabric Market
is always the best choice for holding weekend farmers’ market, small concerts and religious festivals in this region. While most people choose tents for the events, I reused the recycled stretch fabric from the market to construct big temporary sunshades in the tensegrity system, making it integrate into the environment.

The shop hidden among old houses in the alley is actually a quilt factory. I tried to make the traditional fabrication of quilts as
a display, opening the production space to the visitors. I added a new outdoor space with the façade in special forms for people walking in and visiting the factory.
03.Lian-Chen
This is a 60-year-old food company which displays various food products everywhere in the store. I used the shell of glass tubes to make the interior space brighter. And then, I made a special plastic storage space with the features of hand-pulled candy for a small exhibit of

04.Pottery
The Pottery Shop is located in a typical historic street house. It’s long and narrow, divided into three parts by two atriums. Two of them serve as a pottery shop. I designed two ceramic bricks of different sizes that can be piled as the display area or the decoration.

+ changeable surface units
+ multi-purpose collaboration + outdoor space addition
Surrounded by many great historical buildings in downtown Taipei, there is an old modern building facing severe criticisms from people: standing in such an important position, this building seems to represent an unsightly Taiwanese modern aesthetic.
In order to mask the chaotic building surfaces in Taipei, I wanted to make a modular system to solve various façade problems in the city.
First, I attempted to figure out a frame to adapt at least three types of unit to complete a vertical circulation. Therefore, I got two platform units in two heights
and one staircase unit. These units are all constructed with the same steel connectors and the steel tubes in the same form but in different lengths.
Second, I started to arrange the units for the old modern building which is located in a cultural and historical area where activities are often held. I made the viewing platforms and resting area, customizing membranes and metal screens.
It’s a module design that can provide additional space and a temporary change for building surfaces.

+ optical illusion + giant water pump + interactive installation
As an exhibition, Pump Pump is a humanscale experimental facility as well. It’s a translucent box, standing in the plaza beside Taipei Fine Arts Museum. The space is divided into three parts: corridors, water pumping rooms and central display room.
For those who walk into Pump Pump, they will firstly go through the corridor with translucent polycarbonate walls. Then, they will get into a water pumping room with a swing inside and a transparent pipe wall towards the center.
There are also transparent pipes in a ring array surrounded with seats in the
central display room. While playing the swing, they run a water pump at the same time, because the swing is part of the mechanism to drive this whole installation.
For people in water pumping rooms, they will see the water flowing down the pipes. However, because of the pumping system, people in the center can find the water flowing upward in pipes, appreciating the optical illusion of antigravity.

Bringing an asiatic religion to the U.S.
- Intern project
- Group work
- Year: 2016
- Location: Nevada, U.S.
As the only Asian Crew in Burning Man 2016, the director of Dream Community Gordon Tsai decided to bring our religion, Mazu, a tutelary deity of seafarers, to the U.S.
The team was made up of two groups: one built Lulai Art Car and the theme camp in Reno, Nevada; the other prepared the drum show and costumes for the parade in Shenzhen, China.
It’s an incredible experience to showcase strong mainstream culture.

the beauty of Tainan.
- Group work: Chih-Hua, Chang; Chi-Chia, Tsao
- Year: 2019
- Location: Tainan, Taiwan
Tainan is an ancient city in the south of Taiwan. Many people appreciate its great architecture, tasty street food and oldfashioned lifestyle. But few people know that this historical city actually changes everyday.
There are many people working hard everywhere: the refurbishment of old important buildings, the special handpainted boards on the street, the famous restaurants and the farmers’ markets……
The cosy and nostalgic atmosphere that
people enjoy a lot comes from the efforts of everyone in the area even though what they do mostly get unnoticed. So we think that we owe the beauty of Tainan to those who work hard in the city, and we put it as the main idea throughout the video.

My handicrafts and their instructions.
- Year: 2020-present
Handicrafts have flourished in Taiwan in spirits of the creators and are, most of the time, synonymous to high-value goods.
and tools, which lead to their high price. But there are also some products that can be made with more simple technologies and materials at low cost.
Making handicrafts has been my interest since I was a child. Instead of looking for perfect objects in stores, I enjoy
customizing birthday cards, diary books and small functional things and figuring out every detail I like.
While making handmade crafts, I take pictures of the process so I can share it, along with the instructions, with people who are interested in the same thing.
