Q &A Ask the Experts

I am 44yrs with crazy periods, hot flashes at all the wrong times, can’t sleep more than 4 hours a night from the night sweats and have uncontrollable raging angry towards my husband. What is going on, I am too young for menopause, right? By: Dr. Sheryl A. Ross – Ob/Gyn, author, and health expert By the age of 45 or so, most women wonder how “the change will change me?” Perimenopause happens when the ovaries don’t function consistently and upset the normal hormonal rhythm. This hormonal change usually happens within 10 years of menopause. The erratic and disruptive symptoms of perimenopause tend to mark the beginning of menopause. Between the typical 40-something anxieties from divorce, dealings with hormonal or college-bound teens, self-esteem issues, job challenges and other midlife stresses, one’s 40s are challenging enough without the hormonal upheaval. The most common symptoms of perimenopause include irregular periods, hot flashes, sweating, insomnia, depression, anxiety, feeling apprehensive, weight gain or loss, fatigue, bloating, poor concentration, memory loss, vaginal dryness and heart palpitations. These symptoms mimic the symptoms of 18 WQMagazine.com

menopause but tend to come and go unlike symptoms associated with menopause. All of these disruptive symptoms can affect your quality of life. A thorough medical history should be taken, along with a blood panel and a pelvic ultrasound in order to complete the final diagnosis.

Treatment Options • Heavy and irregular periods – The best treatment tends to be with hormones. Low dose oral contraception, cyclic progesterone, IUD with progesterone (Mirena) and Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) are helpful remedies. • Hot flashes – Dressing in layers and staying in cool temperature are the first steps in dealing with hot flashes. Avoid hot beverages, spicy foods, red wine and hot climates bring that bring on hot flashes. Herbal remedies may include passion flower extract, ashwagandha, chasteberry for hot flashes and other symptoms of peri-menopause. • Mood swings – Antidepressants are effective in controlling depression, anxiety and panic attacks. A therapist may also give added support. And, of course, exercise, the elixir to all. • Acupuncture –Even though the studies are not conclusive, hot flashes and heart palpitations may improve with acupuncture treatment. • Low sex drive (libido) – Testosterone and the mediation, Addyi, may be helpful for low libido. • Lifestyle and healthy eating along with a good night’s sleep– Eating a well-balanced and colorful diet of fruit, vegetables, whole grains, and finding an exercise routine and sleeping 7-8 hours a night will minimize your perimenopausal symptoms. Sometimes what women need most is a thorough understanding of exactly what is happening physiologically, if only to realize that

what they are going through is normal and, most important, that we are not crazy.

In addition to her practice, Dr. Sherry is on the board of Planned Parenthood, Los Angeles. She also acts as spokesperson ambassador for the American Heart Association and Go Red, the association’s national movement to end heart disease and stroke in women. McBride Sisters Collection Recommended by: Sabrina C. Nelson

I was introduced to McBride Sisters Winery by my daughter, she gave me a bottle of the “Black Girl Magic Rose”. After finishing half the glass, I was very impressed with the quality and was completely sold on the brand! The Rose and Sauvignon Blanc are light to medium-bodied, I taste hints of citrus notes and it has a slightly dry finish. Always serve the wine perfectly chilled, I promise you will be drinking these wines beyond the summer months! I would recommend pairing the wines with Indian and Thai food, it’s providing a nice balance with medium spiced to really spicy dishes. But the wines taste so good on their own, you may be tempted to have two glasses! The third wine I have tried is the “Black Girl Magic Zinfandel” a medium - bodied red wine—it’s similar to a Pinot Noir. It’s velvety smooth on the palette, I would recommend pairing this wine with grilled meats and vegetables or charcuterie board. But you may just want to enjoy a glass after a long day. The wine prices are similar to other high-quality brands, they offer discounts for first time customers and wine bundles as well. The McBride Sisters customer service is impeccable after you place your order you will receive an email confirmation with in half hour. They provide tracking information multiple times via email and the wine arrived packaged perfectly. Tackle Reading Across America! Kathryn Starke As soon as the evenings turn cooler and leaves begin to fall, we know that fall is right around the corner. By mid-September, schools are back in session and football season is underway. I personally do not think it is a coincidence that International Literacy Day and the NFL season always happen to kick off the same week in September. This alignment also serves as a strong reminder that it is time to tackle reading across America. Before the pandemic, only 37% of nine-year-old children in the United States were reading on grade level. This percentage decreases to 22% in low-income areas.

Tackle Reading

We have a lot of work to do in literacy, so why not use America’s favorite sport to address the issue? Tackle Reading is a book and educational movement supported by the NFL to promote a love of literacy with a passion for football. The book provides motivational tips and inspirational stories written by educators and professional athletes to support reading at home. The book is brought to life every national reading month in March when NFL teams coast to coast visit their local or hometown schools to read to elementary school students. Motivation is a powerful tool to hook kids on reading, and sports is often a good motivator for reluctant readers and young football fans. A Touchdown in Reading Every teacher is a reading teacher. Therefore, we need to help our teachers to become both confident and competent in teaching reading to students of all ages. A Touchdown in Reading: An Educator’s Guide to Literacy Instruction is a newly published, popular reading resource. This is a playbook and how to guide for every homeschool educator or elementary school instructor to help any child become a life-long reader and learner. This back to school season will be uniquely challenging for everyone since many students have not physically been in a school for over a year. Reading is a developmental journey, and yes, some children will be significantly behind in their reading development this year. However, we can help each child make a touchdown in reading this fall by matching them with books and quality reading instruction that help them achieve literacy success. This season, let’s fall in love with reading books again. Be sure to mark your calendar for the sixth annual Tackle Reading event March 2, 2022. Together, we can tackle reading across America. Author Spotlight Contributors on a city and its football team. It follows lovable characters, Football Freddie and Fumble the Dog, and the rich history and culture of each city they visit. She recently did a virtual book reading during the Super Bowl LV at the Ronald McDonald House in Tampa Bay, Florida which is an annual event in the Super Bowl host city. Currently, Marnie has been traveling (virtually these days) all over the country doing book readings at schools, first-responder events, youth sports clubs and businesses.

Background

Marnie Schneider Marnie Schneider is a CEO, inspirational speaker, author, philanthropist, and best of all daughter and mom. A Philadelphia native now living in the Carolinas, she consistently devotes her time and resources to help others achieve their own victory. Marnie thinks of this as “showing up” on life’s playing field, with positivity and energy, day in and day out.

Gameday Marnie’s passion for sports shines through in her book series, Gameday in the USA (Gameday). The series is in the Top 100 Kids Sports Travel books by Amazon. Writing the stories has been her way of giving back to the many great football communities across the nation. The series includes 7 books (with an 8th one releasing in September 2021) that focus 26 WQMagazine.com

Marnie finds inspiration from her family. Her grandfather, Leonard Tose, who was the owner of the Philadelphia Eagles and also founded the Ronald McDonald House. Also, Marnie’s Mom, Susan Tose Spencer, was the first female GM of an NFL team. She was also their legal counsel and VP. Their dedication to family, charity, and sports taught Marnie the importance of giving back, something she has carried forward into her career in the nonprofit sector. She has received honors for her time and attention spent raising money for the Ronald McDonald House and Alzheimer’s Association. To this day she remains very active with the Ronald McDonald House in Charlotte and is on their board.

Family Marnie’s pride is her three kids—Jonathan, Goldie and Leo. Marnie’s experience with her first son, Jonathan (21 years old now) having neuroblastoma opsoclonus as a young child, taught her much about the importance of an extended family and support. She is currently taking care of her mom who was recently diagnosed with dementia. Marnie has a heart for animals and has three rescue dogs and her handsome pony, Billy. Featuring What’s my Style?

Andrea Cameron

With everything that’s going on in the world it can be increasingly difficult to know who we are and what we really want out of life. Pile on the excessive messaging with social media and it can be hard to know which way to turn, let alone know what to wear.

to get dressed do you enjoy the process or are you just throwing something on without putting much thought into it? As you go through your day do your clothes distract you from what you are doing or do they have you feeling juicy with people giving you compliments?

Your personal style goes beyond the surface of what you choose to put on your body each day, it digs deep into the depths of your inner knowing. It answers the question ‘who am I, really?’ Or, at least it attempts to because by now most of us know how multi-faceted us human beings are.

Secondly, who do you already know yourself to be? It’s ok if you haven’t totally figured this out yet, most of us haven’t. Take note of what you do know for sure and consider any information you have gathered over the years through feedback from others or personality tests or even your astrology and human design.

To be aligned with style this inner knowing needs to match the outer expression, how you are showing up in the world needs to be in alignment with who you know yourself to be. With clothing as the ultimate tool of communication it only makes sense to use what you choose to wear to your advantage. You can start by looking at three main facets of how you show up in your life. First, have a look at your wardrobe and pay attention to how it makes you feel. When you go 28 WQMagazine.com

Lastly, have a look at your lifestyle habits and preferences. What do you do throughout the day? What types of activities do you partake in? How do you physically move about? Once you’ve looked at these areas, pay attention. Are your clothing choices enhancing or detracting from your experience? Your clothes should be working for you and your lifestyle needs, if they don’t consider what needs to change and take one step towards the change.

Suicide Awareness September Awareness September was a great “awareness” month for us focused on – Suicide, Selfcare and Self-improvement. Here are the highlights from my social media posts for September:

Self-Care Awareness

“Self-care is giving the world the best of you, instead of what’s left of you.” ~ Katie Read When you are taking care of your responsibilities and everyone else, it is easy to lose sight of your own needs. Taking care of yourself is not a selfish act, it is a loving one. Caring for our needs allows us to reset and come back refreshed which ultimately leads to us being kinder not only to ourselves, but to those around us. Benefits of self-care: Reduce stress. Be more productive. Boost creativity. Strengthen relationships. Make you feel refreshed. Boost self-esteem. Here are some suggestions of activities to add into your schedule to take time out for yourself: Get active – just go for a walk and get some fresh air and sun. Take a nap – schedule some power naps for 10-20 minutes, no more than that. Get a hobby – having a hobby helps you to switch your brain off from problems due to life, home, work. Depending on the hobby – it allows you meet and interact with other people. Pamper yourself – schedule a massage, manicure, pedicure or a facial.

It’s time to remember those affected by suicide, to raise awareness, and to focus efforts on directing treatment to those who need it most. #bethe1to

Research shows people who are having thoughts of suicide feel relief when someone asks after them in a caring way. Findings suggest acknowledging and talking about suicide may reduce rather than increase suicidal ideation.

Studies indicate that helping someone at risk create a network of resources and individuals for support and safety can help them take positive action and reduce feelings of hopelessness.

What’s on your mind? Ghosting. Do you know what it is? If so, have you been ghosted or did you do that to someone else. Ghosting can be work related or personal. This article is on the personal level when you have been communicating with someone and out of nowhere, the person stops answering your calls and text messages. Ghosting is basically rejection, without the finality. It can leave a person feeling confused, hurt and paranoid. Since modern day technology and dating apps, this has become an all-too-common practice. If someone is ghosting you, this is due to not wanting to communicate or the expectation of a “difficult” conversation. Change your perspective. It’s only a confrontation if you allow emotions to take over. Communication gives clarity. Opens the door to an interchange of opinions. Instead of being selfish, it considers the other person’s feelings. Don’t let the selfish acts of others consume you.

Mind Your Buisness How to Create a Family Budget For singles, creating a budget is relatively easy. They tend to have a good handle on how much money they have coming in, and when tracking expenses, they only have their own to think about. But creating a family budget is a whole new ball game. Making a family budget may be tricky, but it can be done. Here’s how.

1 2 3

4

Take inventory of all income. If a certain source of income fluctuates from month to month, use the lowest amount or average it out.

Keep track of all expenses for a month or so. Keep all of your receipts, and ask all family members to turn theirs in to you each day.

Add up your monthly expenses. Be sure to include bills, debt payments, groceries, and everyday expenses such as lunch money and transportation costs.

Get the family together and discuss ways you can trim the budget. Getting input from other family members will help you determine which expenses are necessary and which ones could be cut down or eliminated. Maybe you or your spouse could start taking lunch to work instead of eating out, or maybe the kids can drop an extracurricular activity.

48 WQMagazine.com

5

6

7

In addition to individual expenses, discuss how you can cut down on the electric bill, groceries and other necessary family expenses.

Estimate how much you can save on regular expenses, and cut the completely unnecessary items out of the budget. Then refigure it and see where you stand.

If you end up with a surplus, allocate a portion of it to savings. If you’re in the red, go back and rework the budget until you have more income than expenses.

Being Realistic One reason that family budgets often fail is because they’re just not realistic. It’s great to cut down on expenses, but sometimes we tend to go too far. For example, cutting entertainment out of the budget completely might look good on paper, but we all need a little diversion every now and then. Creating a family budget can help keep spending under control, leaving more money to pay down debts and save for future goals. But in order to succeed, close monitoring is essential. Your efforts will be rewarded, however, with less financial stress and more money in the long run.

Mind Your Buisness

Credit Repair Tips Credit repair agencies claim that they can remove bad entries from your credit report. But did you know that you can often have them removed yourself at a much lower cost? There are two methods by which you may be able to get negative entries removed from your report.

Option 1

Option 2

File Disputes with the Credit Bureaus

Negotiate with Creditors

If You Can’t Get the Bad Entries Removed

The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) requires credit bureaus to investigate any item on your credit report that you dispute. If the information is found to be false, inaccurate or unverifiable, it must be corrected or removed from your report. The bureaus have 30 days from the time they receive notice of the dispute to complete their investigation.

Dealing with creditors can be intimidating, especially if you’re not on good terms with them. But speaking to your creditors directly may help you get negative information removed from your credit report.

There is no guarantee that disputing information on your credit report or negotiating with creditors will get negative items removed from your record. If it doesn’t, the best thing you can do is try to build up some positive information on your report. Making your payments on schedule will raise your credit score, and with the passage of time, the good entries may outweigh the bad.

If there is any inaccurate information on your credit report, a dispute is certainly in order. But some people have had luck disputing items that were in fact accurate, including judgments, collections accounts and repossessions. If such items are not verified by the creditor (or the court in the case of judgments) within the time limit for investigation, they must be removed. If you decide to dispute a legitimate entry, simply write a letter to each of the credit bureaus stating that you dispute that entry. No explanation is required. But keep in mind that if the entry is verified, it will remain on your report. And if the creditor verifies the information after the 30-day time limit, the credit bureau may reinstate the entry as long as they notify you at least 5 days before doing so.

If you only have a late payment or two on your account, a creditor might be willing to remove the derogatory information once you’ve resumed a regular payment schedule. If you’ve experienced repossession or had an account turned over to collections, payment in full might persuade them to remove the negative entry. It sounds like a long shot, but you never know until you ask. Requests to remove late payment information may be made after you’ve brought you account current. But if you’re hoping for removal of a repossession or collection action, it’s best to negotiate a deal before you pay anything.

It’s important to keep our debt at reasonable and manageable levels, or we could end up incurring insane interest charges and scraping to make our payments. Even for those who manage debt well, unexpected life changes can result in difficulty making ends meet. When we find ourselves having problems with debt, the first course of action is to take a look at the budget. Finding ways to cut back on unnecessary expenses can help us pay down debts and keep monthly bills current. But what happens when we can’t solve our debt problems with budgeting? Sometimes we need outside help. It’s hard to go to someone else when you’re having money troubles, but if you don’t gain control over your debts, your credit rating will suffer. So it’s important to take charge before it’s too late. Some debtors turn to debt consolidation as an answer to debt problems. They transfer highinterest debts to a lower interest credit card, or they put up the equity in their homes to get the money to pay them off. While these options can provide lower payments, they are not without drawbacks. Closing numerous accounts and putting all of your debt into one account can negatively affect your ratio of debt to available credit, lowering your credit score. And if you use your home equity to secure the money needed to pay off debt, you’re putting your home at an unnecessary risk. Another popular option for those with debt problems is credit

counseling. Credit counseling agencies offer help with budgeting, and in some cases, they will set you up with a debt management plan. A debt management plan involves negotiation with creditors to obtain lower interest rates and lower payments. The debtor makes one monthly payment to the credit counseling agency, and the agent forwards payments to each creditor. A debt management plan can help you get out of debt faster, but it can also impact your credit. A note is added to your credit report stating that you are undergoing credit counseling. This means that you can’t get new credit. However, the notation is removed once you’ve paid off your debts. It’s also important to make sure you’re dealing with a reputable credit counseling agency. Some charge high fees or fail to make payments to creditors on time. There have also been some that were found to be outright scams, keeping the money that debtors sent them to pay their bills with. When considering credit counseling agencies, make sure they’re members of the Association of Independent Consumer Credit Counseling Agencies (AICCCA) or the National Foundation of Credit Counseling (NFCC). These organizations regulate and monitor member agencies, making sure that they operate legally and ethically. An overabundance of debt can wreak havoc on our finances and our credit scores. By seeking help at the first sign of trouble, we can often prevent our debts from spiraling out of control.

Places you’re Leaving Money on the Table (and How to Fix Them Today)

For any business owner with an online presence (and EVERY business should be online!) there are many passive ways to build income streams into your website and products that will bring in extra money while you focus on serving your current customers. Passive income is good and will help your bottom line while you actively market your business. You’ve invested good money into your business and your website; why not make it work harder for you?

1

Affiliate Marketing is a simple way to make commission by recommending products or services to your audience. This process is similar to telling your friend or neighbor about the great pizza place where you just ate dinner. Simply sign up for the product’s affiliate program and place a unique link within a product review on your blog or on a web page listing all the business tools you recommend. Every time someone clicks on your link, they are brought to the product’s site and if they make a purchase, you get a commission. Affiliate links can also be added to eBooks or other digital products you sell. However, review the Terms of Service for all the social media platforms before posting an affiliate link.

2

Creating upsells in your sales funnel is another overlooked place where you can bring in extra money. Do you have a basic sales funnel in place, where you make an offer

to your broad audience and then have more focused, more expensive offers for them to choose from over time? These additional offers bring your customers down the funnel toward your most expensive offer. Now, for each main offer in your sales funnel, think of an upsell your customer would find valuable. This may be free admittance into your private Facebook group or maybe it’s a report, checklist, form, or eBook for a nominal fee that is a no-brainer add-on to their order. For your more expensive offers, add a more expensive upsell, like a trial period in your membership site. The key is to choose relevant upsells that will benefit your customer and that makes sense to couple with the initial product purchase.

3

Back-end efficiency is important to any business, whether it’s strictly online or whether you also have a physical location. Very often business owners are too close to the situation to see how everything flows (or doesn’t flow) together, similar to why having someone else proofread your sales copy is ideal because they are more likely to pick up typos, strictly because they didn’t write the copy. If you need more help deciphering which passive income streams you’re wasting, call me to schedule a discovery meeting.

How Much Time Have You Got?

Business leaders know they can’t do everything themselves. They see grand plans for the future of the business and know what their own strengths and weaknesses are. These leaders will shop around for expert advisers, coaches, and assistants to handle the myriad tasks involved in the backend of the business so they can dedicate their time to finding new clients and building those relationships while their team handles their own areas of expertise.

We all have the same 24 hours in each day but how we USE those same 24 hours will determine your level of success. Have you ever analyzed what tasks you accomplish during the day, especially on those days where you question where the day went and wished you had an extra eight hours to finish your to-do list? Knowing where you spend your time is part of the equation for success. Of course! Don’t be intimidated by others who tell you something is impossible. Mind Your Buisness 5 Coaches You Don’t Have (But Should) It seems the current popular advice for growing your business is, “You need a coach,” and you’ll see dozens of people hanging up their coaching hat, advertising for clients. But the term “coach” is extremely broad and general so the key to hiring the right coach is knowing what you’re looking for and what TYPE of coach to hire. Every coach has their own niche – much like your business serves a particular niche – and within those niches, every coach has their own strengths and weaknesses. Let’s look at some of those niches in full detail.

Mindset Coaches Mindset coaches focus on your brain’s mindset, how you think and feel about your business and your life; and how to turn any negative thoughts into positive thoughts. Mindset coaches do not solely focus on business; if you’re unhappy with any aspect of your life, a mindset coach can help you figure out your dreams and help you achieve them. Some mindset coaches are licensed psychotherapists while others are certified coaches.

Confidence Coaches These coaches empower their clients who struggle with limiting beliefs and shyness. Again, they are not focused solely on business owners; absolutely anyone who wants to combat negative self-talk and increase their own self-esteem can hire a confidence coach. Some confidence coaches are licensed life coaches or have other degrees in addition to their coaching certifications.

Public Speaking Coaches There’s much more to public speaking than reading PowerPoint slides verbatim. Public speaking coaches are skilled communicators who can analyze the effectiveness of your presentation; give hints about diction and enunciation, as well as give tips for making your presentation more engaging or entertaining. These speaking coaches can also help you combat your stage fright.

Giving women a voice We want you to live your best life by providing tools, resources, advice and inspiration on career, business, entrepreneurship and finances. We want to give women a voice to share and tell their stories that will inspire and pave the way forward for others on their journey.

Writing Coaches We all know the basics of writing from our elementary school days but writing is not a talent that comes easily to everyone. Whether you need some critiques for your blog posts or want to get input of how to outline your book, writing coaches are language experts who often specialize in a certain niche – book publishing, travel writing, food writing, etc. – who can help you convey your information in a more effective way to your audience.

Full page ad packages available for authors, coaches and online retailers.

Branding and Visibility Coaches Branding is so much more than your logo and your business colors. Branding coaches will help you develop your company brand – or your company image – and will help you gain the visibility (publicity) that you need to build name recognition. Branding coaches have a firm understanding of how to convey your message to your audience and how to keep your business image positive. An experienced business coach will know which niche coaches will best serve you and should also have contact names and professional relationships with those in each niche. Mind Your Buisness Educate Yourself Before Starting The Path To A New Career If you’re looking to start a career – whether it’s because you’re just beginning your journey as a working adult or because you’re ready for a change in life – you should know that the process is much larger than just getting a degree and looking for a job.

We are stronger together. So how can we help each other? Sometimes you need a helping hand, some guidance or a little push. SUIT Sisterhood connects people seeking guidance with a Mentor. Business, Career, Lifestyle Mapping and Spirituality. Which one are you? Mentor– You want to pass along your years of experience in whatever field or area of expertise to a more junior individual. A career involves knowing your interests in a particular industry or area, knowing what to expect as far as compensation and responsibility and researching what tools and knowledge you will need to be an asset for companies in that industry. It’s wise to begin your pursuit by educating yourself on what careers are in demand and what skills you need to enter those careers. Here are few simple steps that can help get you started:

1. Understand your interests –

Some colleges and universities offer prospective and current students complimentary self-assessment options to help determine careers that fit their interests. For example, University of Phoenix offers Phoenix Career Services, a comprehensive suite of tools and services specifically designed to help prospective and current students make informed decisions regarding their career paths and educational needs. And the Career Interest Profiler helps students to identify professional interests in several areas, allowing them to plan ahead for paths of study.

2. Understand employer needs –

Knowing what jobs will keep your interest going strong is a good start, but it’s also important to learn what employers need from workers in that field so you can take the right college courses and learn the appropriate skills. You also should learn what jobs are in demand in your field of interest, so you can assess whether your

career of choice offers room to enter and grow. University of Phoenix’s Job Market Research Tool helps potential and existing students learn the demand and typical salary information in the current market.

3. Understand educational needs –

Starting a new career often involves the need to return to school for a new degree so you can be more competitive when entering the job market. My Career Plan is a personalized roadmap that University of Phoenix students incorporate into their academic journey so they are developing the competencies that employers are seeking in the workforce today. And career preparation tools provide students with resume, cover letter and interview development services so they can put the best foot forward while job searching.

4. Understand your financial

responsibilities – Schools will provide information on financial obligations and options, helping potential students determine if starting or going back to school is a viable option at the moment. Having a clear picture of the total cost and anticipated timing for paying off a college expense can help you set a budget as you pursue your new career goals. University of Phoenix, for instance, offers a complimentary Financial Plan designed to help prospective students estimate tuition and fees for their entire degree program and build a personal plan for how they will pay for it. A new career is an exciting opportunity, and can provide a new look on life from income to social connections and even where you live.

Ask For Support

Mentors and a career coach can provide guidance, motivation, and emotional support. They may assist in exploring careers, setting goals, developing contacts, and identifying resources. Align yourself with various mentors, including someone in a position you’re pursuing, providing perspective on the day-to-day responsibilities and challenges. A mentor outside your organization offers a viewpoint on how other organizations run their business and create a safe place to discuss options inside and outside your organization.

Goal Setting

By Leadership and Career Coach, Danielle Cobo

A study conducted in 1979 by the Harvard MBA program found that students with written goals and specific plans for achieving their goals made ten more than 97% of their peers. SMART goals are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, and Realistic, and Time-Bound. Identify the specific steps to achieve your goal, including development courses, frequent calls with mentors, and reading books. Measuring your progress is an essential step to being accountable. Stretch yourself outside your comfort zone while ensuring your goals are attainable and realistic within reach. The last step is setting a target date you are going to achieve your goals.

It’s no secret that when you are looking to elevate your career, sometimes the most challenging part is understanding the steps to achieve your career goals. When you create a clear roadmap to achieve your goals, the opportunities are limitless. In this article, you’ll learn four steps to gain clarity on your career.

By taking these four steps, you are building an effective plan for your career.

It First Starts with Shifting Your Mindset

LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/daniellecobo/

The first step is identifying the negative thoughts that limit yourself. These are negative thoughts that we’ve told ourselves, preventing us from pursuing our goals. Set aside 20 minutes in a quiet place and write down the negative stories you’ve told yourself. Then write an affirmation for each negative thought. An example may include “I don’t have experience” to “I am confident in my abilities.”

Identify Your Strengths and Growth Opportunities Identify your core competencies, including top three strengths and two growth opportunities. Stumped? Ask your peers. For example, if your growth opportunity is communication skills, enroll in a public speaking course, practice active listening, take a personality test to understand your communication style, and flex your communication approach with others.

A place which we all known as earth. Yet despite the fact that it is the only “home” to billions of us, and other living beings of the environment, we are blinded by our greed and our hunger to industrialize and build concrete jungles that have irrevocably damaged the earth, the effects of which can be seen daily. From climate change induced disasters, to costing lives and livelihood, the earth is sending blaring signals for help! However, just like every story has its heroes, there are certain people, ordinary humans who are giving it their all to battle, protect and save the planet from climate change. Those voices need to be heard and amplified to set an example of perseverance and inspiration for us all. We are Humans For Earth. Our mission is to narrate their stories and amplify such strong voices and stories about people who are adopting sustainable lifestyles and acting to save the planet. Do-Gooder Spotlight Laura Rhodes-Levin, LMFT., Founder of The Missing Peace Center for Anxiety

By Jules Lavallee

Laura is the Founder of The Missing PeaceCenter for Anxiety, a facility that offers a variety of modalities, including Psychotherapy, Neurofeedback, Art Therapy, Olfactory Anxiety Reduction, Group Therapy, Movement, and more to help ease the nervous system and restore the brain, body, and mind to a place of calmness and relaxation. At The Missing Peace Center for Anxiety, therapy is combined with modern technology to help facilitate the brain to return to its senses and reach a feeling of well-being.

Tell us your unique approach in understanding anxiety and anxiety disorders. In the facility, we have found it extremely effective to treat anxiety holistically. That means we work with the mind, the brain, the senses, the physical body, the spirit, and the energy body. Because anxiety affects us holistically, it is important to treat it that way. We cannot just think our way out

of anxiety. It is like scratching your head for an itch on your foot. The part of the brain that experiences fear is different from the part of our brain that solves problems. While it is important to think about your problems differently, first we must address the body itself, which has been hijacked by anxiety or depression. We must soothe the body, before we are able to think differently. That’s where most of the work in our facility starts. If your dog is stressed out, you wouldn’t ask “what triggered you fluffy?” You would sooth your pet. Our fear is triggered by the more primitive part of our brain. Along with CBT, EMDR, DBT and ACT and psychodynamic therapeutic techniques, we use a combination of modern technologies such as neurofeedback and pemf that give the opportunity for the brain to reprogram itself and create healthier neuropathways. We provide movement for the body as well as massage. Art therapy addresses anxiety and depression in an entirely different way than regular talk therapy. We also incorporate music therapy, sound, breath and smell as a way to teach our clients how to relax themselves, find hope again and achieve happiness. Addressing mental health is an issue that is still struggling to find a foothold in promoting and maintaining ongoing and preventive care. We know that we need to be ahead of the game when it comes to physical health, and we are only just starting to acknowledge that the same is true for mental health.

What are some of the misconceptions about anxiety? How are you helping clients? Anxiety is not always a bad thing. It’s important to learn that it is okay to be uncomfortable sometimes. Our anxiety is there to alert us to danger. That’s an important mechanism to have. Anxiety is essential to our survival, so be glad you have it! But everything in moderation lol. We need tools which ground us to reality. We must learn to walk the line between safety and fear. It is important to understand why your anxiety is taking over, how to approach it and soothe it and how to use it to your advantage. I like to tell my clients it’s like getting a master’s degree in yourself. You are getting a hold of your owner’s manual and learning about the amazing vehicle that is your body. Do-Gooder Spotlight Bernadine Fried- LMFT -Trama and Addiction Expert at Red Door in Beverly Hills By Jules Lavallee

Tell us about your background. I had a childhood that was immersed in addiction and began very young around the age of 12 or 13 years old. Growing up, my family remained in a constant flow of partying and drug use. Growing up in LA had its problems. As the youngest in the family, I watched my older siblings as they began to fall deeper into their substance use. My friends would say I lived in the “cool” house because of our “anything goes” mentality. We spent our time jumping off the roof into the pool, conducting Ouija board seances, and lip syncing to Bowie. The carefree atmosphere of the 60s and 70s was the perfect Petrie dish to fuel my intense addiction later in life. By the time I was 26 years old, I hit my bottom as they say as I was hopelessly addicted to a daily use of heroin and cocaine. I had tried everything to try and curtail my addiction without luck. But after a decade of rehabs, detoxes, and methadone intense therapies, I was able to get sober on December 10, 1987. Once I had six months of sobriety, I began working with other addicts in recovery attending UCLA Extension and I have been in the field ever since. We started the Red Door in 2018 after a client who I cared for very much died of pancreatic cancer. His beautiful mother, who is an activist for political reform, invited Alex and I over for dinner. At dinner with members of her foundation, my late client’s wife and their 2-year-old son, they wanted to help support us with a significant donation to Alex’s nonprofit, the Evergreen Fund, which he started in September 2005. In 2018, we used the donation to start Red Door Life, a wellness community in West Hollywood, California.

Lifestyle plays a significant role in the successful path to recovery from addiction. Explain. A successful path to recovery often entails a lifestyle that is based on a multidimensional approach. Often this includes the emotional, physical, and spiritual. Healing as in meditation, yoga connecting with community and nature. Also “giving back” to others and striving to live a life that is unencumbered by self-obsession. The trap that Addiction plays tends to narrow and create 62 WQMagazine.com

obsession with escape and getting away from internal exploration. Recovery gives people the chance to explore life as a new adventure and opens up the opportunity to feel like they are floating on the sensation that anything is possible. Recovery opens a channel of curiosity and a new perspective without being numbed out shut down. Recover creates a new inspiration and an overall happiness and the sense of wellbeing. There is the freedom of obsession and shame that allows for the sense of possibility.

What factors contribute to the success of The Red Door? The Red Door is a community that provides a safe, engaging, purposeful, supportive, fun, healing environment in a beautiful setting to help individuals embrace recovery. We are committed to providing individualized services tailored to each client. We support each client with a wide range of services to enhance twelve different dimensions of a client’s life including fitness, nutrition, spirituality, community, physical and mental health, relationships, purpose, entrepreneurship, and giving back. The Red Door allows people to feel connected and hence not alone. There is a safety and camaraderie and a sense of connection in its approach. Website: www.bernadinefried.com

where people want to shop, as opposed to having to shop. I spoke to the woman who ran the store and worked for her for one day, and in that time, I learned all of the things I did not want to do in my store.

What are the top sellers online?

Our top sellers in our store, as well as online, is purses and the close second, is our dresses. During the pandemic, it seems like everyone lived in sweatpants, so it reminds me of the end of the 1918 pandemic when the Roaring ‘20s flourished. During the recent pandemic, a lot of us wouldn’t even put on lipstick, let alone dress up. When I leave work to see my incredible husband I put on my lipstick and he tells me how beautiful I look. All of this feels wonderful. It’s the little things we weren’t able to do that make us feel very special.

The Vault Luxury Resale: Accessible Luxury for All By Jules Lavallee Sue McCarthy is the Founder, and CEO of The Vault Luxury Resale, one of the nation’s finest upscale resale boutiques located in the St. Louis suburb of Brentwood, and a luxury resale online store that was born during the pandemic. Known as the “Upscale Resale Queen,” McCarthy, with love and support from her two caring daughters -- Laura McCarthy Maurice and Diana McCarthy Ford – has shown her zest for family, business, and life for several decades.

What led you to launch one of the nation’s finest upscale resale boutiques?

What do you look for when buying products for the boutique?
