Letter from the Publisher Let go of the control you never had. I was in a conversation with a woman much older than myself, when I first heard those words. I found myself grabbing a notebook and pen and writing down everything she said. She was inquiring about how my mother was doing and how I was holding up as a caregiver. She said, “I learned a long time ago, to let go of the control I never had. What’s the worst that will happen?” We spend all our lives trying to control every aspect and every outcome. When in reality, we can’t control how things will turn out. So you do the best you can and go along with the process whatever it may be. I have found that by letting go of control, things happen as they will and in many cases to my benefit. A person reaches a new level of maturity when they realize this and life becomes less stressful. For example, when people react in a negative way, they are responsible for their own reactions. You can apologize, but that person will choose whether or not they want to accept it. If they don’t accept it, you have to move on. There are also times when you have to hand off the baton. Before we could finish this publication, I became very ill. I was supposed to be on the cover but my mini me, Nikki Gal, stepped in and said, “We are all in this together.” I couldn’t have said it better myself. Let’s learn to work together, stop being hard on each other and on ourselves and press on to a new level of maturity.

Ask the Experts

Q& A

Q: How to pull off an interview?

A:

Familiarize Yourself with the Company: When starting your job search you may have done what many people tend to do when job hunting. You sent out your resume to anyone who would take it. If you’re lucky your resume made it into the prospect list of a few companies and they, in turn, have sent out a confirmation email extending an interview session to you. When you receive this email, you should start setting aside some time to do a little research. Companies appreciate it when prospective employees are knowledgeable about the company they are interviewing for. It shows a high level of drive and interest that can help to set you apart from other prospects in the running.

Q: How to improve your credit A:

score?

Pay your bills on time. Paying your bills on time is the single most important contributor to good credit. Late payments negatively affect your ability to get credit since they indicate a stronger likelihood that you will make late payments again or will be unable to pay your debts in the future. Even if the debt you owe is a small amount, it is crucial that you make payments on time. Photo: @pexels.com

Q: How to keep your skin looking A:

young and healthy?

. Staying hydrated. One of the best ways to keep your skin glowing is to keep it supplied with water. But you'll need to do more than keep a bottle of water handy. Use a moisturizer that keeps your skin continuously hydrated - not only will it help your skin look better in the moment, but it also helps to protect over the long term.

Ask the Experts ................ How To Create A Healing Environment At Home One of the first things to do, when you want to remove stress from your life, is to create a healing environment at home. It's a wellknown fact that stress affects both your physical and emotional wellbeing. So, to feel your best, you need to remove the negativity associated with a hectic lifestyle. The good news is... it's probably not as difficult as you think. Keep reading to learn more. Let's face it, a healthy environment makes you feel safe and helps to eliminate feelings of sadness, worry and helplessness. It's void of noise and confusion which, over the long term, can lead to issues such as high blood pressure, heart disease and even strokes. You may not be able to control your environment at work, but the task is certainly achievable at home. Consider the following tips to help you get started.

Your Overall Goal Your overall goal is to create a nurturing (and therapeutic) space, filled with some of the things you love the most. Doing so promotes spiritual growth and self-healing. Ideally, this works best if you have a spare room you can convert into your own special haven. If that's not a possibility, don't panic. Simply create multiple "mini spaces" throughout your home. In the event that money is an issue, you always have the option of buying things second hand, to utilize when decorating. If you're a bargain hunter, think of it as your newest (stress-free) adventure.

Eliminate Clutter Everyone would be better off if they took the time to eliminate clutter in their lives. Have you ever tried to completely relax in a room full of clutter? It's almost impossible to do, isn't it? Get rid of things you no longer use. Give these things to charity or have a garage sale. Someone else will be happy to give your unwanted belongings a new home.

Utilize Color Certain colors affect the way you feel. So if you have the time and energy, you might consider repainting your space. You can either go with a color that automatically makes you happy or choose one known to invoke a positive response. For example, red typically causes an invigorating reaction and blue has the (opposite) calming effect.

Additional Ideas There are so many additional things that you can do to create a healing environment in your home. They include, but are not limited to: •

candles or a fireplace

Quite honestly, the possibilities are endless. If you find it relaxing to read a good book, think about creating a reading corner. On the other hand, if you love to fix things, the ideal healing environment might be a workspace in the garage. The choice is up to you! Now that you know more about creating a healthy environment at home, what are you waiting for? Remember, you don't have to complete the project overnight. The idea is to reduce stress, not to make it worse. This is something that can be done on an ongoing basis. There's nothing wrong with creating a relaxing environment that is forever a "work in progress."

K, so you're checking out this book and you're wondering if it’s any good. Well, I can tell you this much, if you ever find anyone who has been through as many things as I have and is still left standing, then you know I’m someone who can’t be stopped. I have had many people come to me and ask me how I became so successful in life. Well, I believe, it’s ‘the thought process' that got me to where I am today. Nothing stops me from achieving my dreams. So now you are thinking, “is this is going to be one of those boring ‘self-help’ books that everyone writes?!” Well, you are wrong, my friend. When you read my original stories, or should we call them, ‘real life drama,’ the ‘things’ that happen to me are almost unbelievable experiences anyone could have, and with such bad luck. Bad luck…is there such a ‘thing?’ You know what they say about karma. I guess I have really pissed off someone along the way. So, should I tell you early on the crazy things that happen to me? Nah…I want you to read the book, so there you have it. But, I have always taken the ‘bull-bythe-horns,’ so to speak, and changed the direction in my life by having a certain ‘thought’ process. By sharing my stories of life’s ups and downs, I will hopefully give you a guide to my overall thought process, how I tackled each and every obstacle, and the decisions I made to keep moving forward in the direction I wanted. Hopefully, you can apply the way I approached challenges to make your life better. Cheers!

Bio Robin’s hometown is a very small Virginia town. Once quiet and shy, she came out of her shell to join the cheerleading squad during her high school days. Dancing also became a big part of Robin’s life as she took ballet, tap, baton, modern and jazz dancing for 14 years. During her educational years, Robin worked a few small jobs and then decided if she was going to make anything of herself, she needed to move to the big city. In Richmond, Virginia, she started her career as an Accounting Clerk with a stock brokerage firm. A year later, Robin interviewed with Reynolds Metals Company. Her 21 plus years at Reynolds afforded her the knowledge she still uses today within the Accounts Payable, Purchasing and Travel areas of the company. Robin earned her BBA and MBA from Averett University’s accelerated program and has worked in the Commercial Card Industry for JPMorgan Chase, American Express, Suntrust Bank (Now Truist), MUFG Union Bank and currently Texas Capital Bank. On top of being an outstanding singer and performer, Jay is a brilliant songwriter and music producer. It is also worth mentioning that Jay does not only write music for himself. Beauty Hacks 3 Easy Tips That Will Get Women Looking Gorgeous Every Day And On-The-Go Busy Mom A look that is both quick and easy for on-the-go is key for busy moms. Apply a sheer foundation or tinted moisturizer to even out your skin tone. Tint the apples of your cheeks with a cream blush or bronzer using your EcoTools Finishing Kabuki brush, which gives your skin a touch of color and a healthy glow. Quickly add dimension to eyes by sweeping on a dark brown or gray shadow, and polish off the look with a sheer, tinted lip balm.

Back to School Chic

Photo: @pexels.com

Heading back to an early morning makeup routine can be overwhelming once the school year gets underway. For the busy mom getting her family organized and out the door in the morning, there isn't much time to primp for the day. She needs a look that is achieved quickly and requires minimal maintenance. The student beginning a new school year is often seeking a fresh, new style that will have her looking great in and out of class. For the firsttime makeup user, this can also be a time to start experimenting with makeup and developing a personal style. Whether you are a multitasking mom, headed back to school, or a beginner with makeup, creating a beautiful look can be easy and fun. Try one of these looks that will have you looking chic in no time.

Women want to look bright and fresh, and are in need of a makeup routine that will last from 8 a.m. class to study group to dinner with friends. Keep the skin dewy with a light application of foundation and concealer, and use the fluffy EcoTools Powder Brush to lightly apply powder where needed. Sweep a bronzer all over the face for a healthy and sun-kissed glow all-year round. Apply a shimmery shadow to your eyelid and a highlighter on the inner corner of your eyes to make them pop. To keep maintenance easy, use a lip stain for long wearing color that will last for hours.

First brush with makeup: The fundamental rule for girls using makeup for the first time is "less is more." Before heading out the door to hit the homeroom, use concealer just to cover any blemishes. Let the rest of your skin shine through. Avoid using dark eyeshadow, to keep your look more natural. Showcase your eyes with a thin line of eyeliner, which makes lashes look full. Add a hint of color to the cheeks using a sheer stain and finish off with a tinted lip balm. This look is easy to accomplish using the brushes found in the EcoTools 6-Piece Brush Set.

Life's Survival Guide 5 Ways To Quickly Tackle Household Chores by taking responsibility to each keep up with a few simple tasks so your home never becomes a disaster zone.

As fall approaches, the daylight hours are dwindling, kids are headed back to school, and the lazy days of summer will soon be long forgotten. As you establish new routines, it seems like there are 10 additional tasks to handle each day, and cleaning, while one of the most important things on your todo list, often falls to the bottom due to lack of time. In fact, a recent CLR Brands survey revealed that on average, women spend 15.5 hours per week cleaning in and around the home while men spend 10 hours per week – a significant amount of time. Ever wondered how to clean more effectively and quickly, to actually find some extra time to spend on your favorite things this fall? One idea is to get the whole family involved and not let cleaning become an insurmountable chore. With some planning and teamwork, you can make cleaning a fun event in your household and teach your kids (and significant other) to take pride in their home

CLR (www. clrbrands. com) cleaning experts share top tips to help you make the most of your time and clean more efficiently. For more inspiration on how to transform your home, see below.

Tips and tricks for speedy fall cleaning: •

Figure out who likes doing what best. If someone prefers to handle the yard work and the kids love polishing silver or unloading the dishwasher, divide it up so the act of doing chores doesn’t seem as tedious. Or, designate a family cleaning day and clarify who will be doing what and when. Pre-game. Before the big day, assign each person a room to prep so that once you attack with your gloves on and product in hand, you’re not wasting precious time and energy figuring out what goes in the junk drawer, what should be thrown out and what should be kept. Multitask. Several products can

do double (if not triple) duty. For example, CLR works on showerheads, porcelain, chrome, glassware, fiberglass, stainless steel and grout, and can even remove sprinkler spots on outdoor windows and remove stains and mold smells from your washing machine. Grease Magnet cleans grills, smokers and tenacious garage floor stains and Stone Cleaner brings the sparkle back to delicate, hard-to-clean surfaces like granite, marble, Corian and tile. Get the hardest part out of the way first. Medical professionals are taught to sanitize a room by starting with the dirtiest area and working toward the cleanest, and you should do the same. Tackle the most time-consuming areas (scum-soaked shower doors, greasy grills, or dirt and dust on top of fans) first and then work toward the less time-intensive ones. Create rewards or foster healthy competition with kids. For enterprising children, showing them how you can find silver “treasures” and polish them to sparkle is a great way to get kids involved. You can even make it a game by suggesting that the person who can get an old piece of silver the shiniest will be awarded a prize. -(ARA)

The Truth About Fault Katherine Scott, M.Ed/Ed.S, LMFT

F

ault tends to cling to us as a quiet passenger, silently haunting the narrative by which we live our lives. Fault colors in between the lines of interpretation. She skews our perception to lean into guilt during parts of our stories that heed no such circumstances. Fault manipulates guilt, convincing us of a part we played when in fact, sorrow and empathy are far better fits. Human nature balks against acceptance of situations and outcomes outside of our control. Fault and unhelpful guilt are our mind’s way of desperately overpowering the feelings of having no say.

Professional. While she works

Which most of the time we don’t have any say of how the world unfolds around us.

with people in most walks of life,

This infuriates us.

her niche is working with children on the Autism Spectrum and their families, as well as broad Neurodiversity. Some of her other interest include OCD, anxiety, grief, and trauma. Katherine recently published a therapeutic children’s book exploring resiliency and the power of friendship titled The ‘Tail’ of a Trio.

Fault is a stubborn passenger that follows people into the therapy room. She is unwavering and infiltrates self-talk and core beliefs. She whispers into the ears of those depleted by their passenger. Let me paint a picture of her powerful grip. A person enters the therapy room, their shoulders heavy with allconsuming guilt. You see, they were the parent of a teenager who was recently involved in a life-ending car crash. The parent had established all the realistic expectations for this teen including a curfew and knowledge of their company for the evening. They had a good relationship and no known reasons to question their trust. Yet, here they sat, crumpled from grief on the couch across from me, fault gnawing at the corners of their sanity. Guilt had a tight grasp on their perception of uncontrollable aspects, such as the teenager’s impulsive choice to drink a few beers that night, or the argument they got into with their significant other, which may have contributed to the speed of which they ran the red light. “I should have known.”

54 WQMagazine.com

“It’s my fault they’re dead.” Fault comes into play when we know the outcome of an action or decision. It’s our fault when our sister cries after we hit them in the head out of frustration. It’s our fault our husband will have no hot water for the shower because we took an extra long one out of spite. However, when we don’t know the outcome and it goes south, this is a mistake. This is a series of unfortunate events. This is outside of our control. Fault interrupts our abilities to process uncomfortable emotions that result from the discomfort of situations outside of our influence. Fault seeks a higher purpose yet can become maladaptive when unhelpful guilt infiltrates our narrative. Fault inspires unhelpful guilt which leads to a dire case of the ‘shoulda, coulda, woulda’s’ and burdening personalization.

................

So, be on the lookout for this quiet passenger. Thank her for her good intent, but release her as you bravely embark on sitting with the discomfort of uncontrollable outcomes.

Shawnti Refuge Congratulations to our 1st Runner-up in our Everyday Woman Contest. Here is her story in her own words. In the meantime, while “living life”, my inner child started acting out. She was demanding attention, but at the time I didn’t know that. All the issues that I buried needed to be addressed and I couldn’t hold it in any longer. I became sad, angry, mean, irritable, and crying continuously. I eventually sought professional help but was provided drugs. I didn’t want to be medicated, I wanted to heal. My therapist encouraged me to start journaling to deal with the issues I had buried and forgotten about that had started to resurface.

I began creating guided journals after I was diagnosed with Severe Depression and Anxiety in 2018. Before I started using guided journals, I was living life, but not the life I wanted. I was busy taking care of family & work, but not myself. I was mentally & physically tired all the time but felt I had to keep pushing because that’s what a wife & mother was supposed to do, right? 56 WQMagazine.com

Since guided journaling helped me, I had to bring mental health awareness to the forefront and encourage others to begin their healing process through guided journaling.

I tried regular journaling where I would just write in a notebook, but that didn’t work for me. I needed guidance in my writing to stick to the issues and work through them, one at a time. This is where I found guided journaling. Guided journaling helps you commit to mindfulness and can help you improve mental health through structured, reflective writing prompts, guided questions, and affirmations.

have picnic facilities, so you can pack a lunch instead of eating out.

Other Ideas Here are some more inexpensive family activities to consider: * Play miniature golf. Admission is usually quite reasonable, and it provides the opportunity for relaxed yet engaging family competition. * Visit a petting zoo. These small zoos do not have the exotic animals you see at larger ones, but kids can feed and pet the animals.

Fun and Frugal Family Outings The time we spend with our families is priceless. But most popular family activities are quite expensive. Even a simple night at the movies can put a serious dent in the budget by the time you buy tickets, popcorn and drinks for everyone. Fortunately, there are cheaper alternatives to expensive family outings. They provide the opportunity to have just as much fun at a fraction of the cost. Some are even free.

Movies and Music Kids are often itching to see the newest releases at the movie theater. Doing so even once a month, however, can get pricey. One alternative in some areas is the drive-in. Admission is usually much cheaper than it is at a regular theater, and some let you bring your own drinks and snacks. Drive-ins usually show fairly new releases, so the kids can say they saw something that's not out on video yet. Some theaters offer reduced-price

matinees during the day. Some even have free kid-oriented movies on weekend days. These options offer the theater experience without the outrageous cost. Kids often want to go to concerts, but tickets to see the most famous bands are far from cheap. Check your local paper for free concerts in the park. Many areas have them during the warm months. Young children can enjoy the music without the huge crowds and deafening sound systems, and older children might gain an appreciation for less well-known bands.

The Great Outdoors Nature offers a wealth of possibilities for family outings. Camping is a wonderful activity for families, and it doesn't have to be expensive. It can be as simple as pitching a tent in the back yard, or you can spring for a camper and rent space at a campground. Bring the grill and some hamburgers or hot dogs, or catch some fish to fry. Parks are great for day trips. Those with playground equipment can keep youngsters entertained for hours on end. Hiking trails offer opportunities for exercise and exploration. Most parks

* Go to a museum. Some offer cheap or free admission, while others cost more. But the larger and more expensive ones often sell season passes, so if you live close by, you can visit numerous times for one low price. * Go boating. If you're fortunate enough to live near a body of water, boating is fun and relaxing. Canoe and paddle boat rentals are inexpensive, and when you're done boating there are usually other cheap or free activities in the area. * Attend events at a nearby college. These may include plays, concerts, dance recitals and movie showings. Prices are low, and student discounts usually apply to kids, too. Having fun as a family doesn't require a six-figure income. If you look hard enough, you can find lots of free or cheap activities that parents and kids can enjoy just about anywhere.

Every Little Bit of Savings Adds Up Living on a budget is the key to financial freedom, but getting started can be frustrating. When we look at our expenses and see all of those bills we're paying every month, it's easy to throw our hands up in disgust. But what about all those little expenses we incur? You might be surprised to find out just how much they amount to. It's easy to dismiss cutting back on little things. A few dollars a month won't make a significant difference in the big picture. But a few dollars here and a few dollars there adds up to a few more dollars. When you cut back in a lot of small ways, you could end up with a lot more money at the end of the month.

Waste Not, Want Not One thing we can do that is good for the budget is stop wasting so much. This can apply to many areas in our lives. From eating to home heating, waste equals money going down the drain unnecessarily. Cooking for the family instead of eating takeout or dining out is a great way to save money. But if you're throwing food out, the benefit is reduced. So if you have leftovers, don't let them end up in the trash. Some dishes freeze well,

and this makes for easy dinners when you don't have time to cook. You could also eat dinner leftovers for lunch the following day. If your home is not well insulated, you're probably wasting lots of money on home heating and cooling. Insulating will cost some money up front, but it will pay for itself quickly. If you have drafts around windows and doors, weatherstripping can help maintain the temperature of your home. Most households waste an

unbelievable amount of electricity. This can be prevented in part by using energy efficient appliances and light bulbs. Turn lights, televisions, computers and other devices off when you're not using them, and open blinds to take advantage of the sun's light during the day.

to larger expenses such as home repairs. Many of us buy coffee or a soft drink from a convenience store or coffee shop on the way to work in the morning. This can really add up over time. Instead, make your own coffee, or buy soda in 2-liter bottles and pour some into a smaller bottle or cup to take with you. The same applies to lunches. Instead of springing for fast food, take a sandwich or something microwavable to work. While we're not all good at all types of repairs and maintenance, most of us can do some things for ourselves. Maybe you could change your own oil instead of paying someone else to do it. If the walls need painting, consider getting friends and family to help you do it instead of hiring a painter. Things like these can save us a noticeable amount of money right away. When you add up the savings, little things can make a big difference to the budget. So take a close look at your budget and see what small expenses are lurking there. If you can eliminate or reduce them, it could positively impact your bottom line.

Do Yourself a Favor: Do It Yourself Any time you pay someone else to do something that you could do yourself, you're spending money unnecessarily. This applies to little things like buying coffee instead of making your own, as well as

Which Do You Value More: Your Money or Your Time? Certainly you’ve heard the old adage, “Time is money.” If you’re a business owner, your time is valuable because you have valuable knowledge to share with your audience. Your time is best used catering to those customers and clients who need your knowledge instead of struggling over some back office tasks that are not customer-related at all. The time you spend doing these non-customer tasks is money that you’re not earning back. So why is it that you still find the need to do everything in your business yourself, instead of investing some of your money on a virtual assistant or in software that will help automate certain business processes?

Outsourcing to Grow Your Business Outsourcing tasks to a virtual assistant or biting the bullet to hire a business coach can be scary, especially if you’re already on a tight budget or have limited clients. But in the long run, hiring these experts to handle tasks they are experienced to handle will make you money and grow your business. Think of it this way: if you want to set up a sales funnel with upsells, how long do you think it will take you to figure out the software you need and the offers you want within the funnel? Let’s really get 64 WQMagazine.com

back to basics and ask: Do you know what a sales funnel is and how it functions? Yes, you can find many good resources online that will tell you how to set this up but it will still take up more of your time to complete the actual set up than if you invested money and hired a business coach to help you map it out and a virtual assistant who

knows how to use the tools. This isn’t the only example. If bookkeeping and numbers give you headaches and angina, why not hire a bookkeeper who will keep your monthly ledgers in order? They will already know how to use the bookkeeping software, produce reports so you know exactly how much you made every month, and prepare your records so your accountant is happy to see you at tax time. Now, while your hired experts are doing their jobs, YOU can focus on what you do best: serving your clients and customers. That’s where you make your money, not

in handling new software or your monthly bookkeeping. Your clients trust you to give them what they need to solve their problems, so focus on that, your specialty, and let the other experts focus on their own areas of expertise.

Grow Your Business Quickly by Outsourcing Once you begin outsourcing on a regular basis, even if you only have one contractor, you have gained more time in your day to serve your clients. This extra time allows for more email marketing, writing your book or signature class, or recording interviews for podcasters and other media sources. Basically, the more time you have to focus on money-making tasks as opposed to behind-the-scenes business tasks, the more profit you’ll make. Of course, the biggest step to quick growth is taking action: action in hiring competent contractors and action in actively marketing your business. If you need help in deciding what tasks to outsource, a great business coach will demystify the whole process so you can feel confident about growing your business.

How to Support Women-Owned Small Businesses

Small businesses are essential to their local communities. They bring innovation with unique business models and products, they provide employment opportunities, and they care about the people in their community as friends and neighbors. Women-owned small businesses specifically are essential because they represent a minority in the business world. Although women- owned small businesses face challenges, they provide a unique perspective in the business world and they serve as an example for women and young girls around them. Here are 4 ways you can support them.

more customers through word-ofmouth. If you want to support your favorite women-owned businesses, refer a friend or family member to them. If the referral falls through, you could buy your friend or family member a gift certificate. They will be more likely to spend the money you gave them and will hopefully grow supportive of the business in the process.

Shop Local Yelp has developed a feature that makes finding womenowned businesses easier. Businesses can be certified as “women-owned”. Before hopping online to buy what you need, check for women-owned stores in your local area. Another way to shop locally and support these businesses is to order from a restaurant instead of buying fast food if you do not want to cook. Many local stores and restaurants are offering curbside pickup or delivery services right now to take into consideration both convenience and safety.

Refer a Friend or Buy a Gift Certificate Small businesses generally gain

Shout-Out on Social Media or Write a Review You can support your local womenowned small businesses at no cost by posting a shout-out to them on your social media platforms. If your favorite store shares a sale, or your favorite restaurant shares its menu, repost that information onto your account. Writing a review for businesses on Google or Yelp is another great way you can show your support. Donate There are many ways you can donate to a women-owned small

business. You can donate directly to them via your monetary donations, supplies, or time. You can also support them by donating to organizations that help female business owners. Some of these organizations include the National Association of Women Business Owners, National Women’s Business Council, SBA Women’s Business Center, Ladies Who Launch, SCORE, and Women’s Venture Fund. Overall, there are many ways to support and show compassion to small business owners. A quick and easy way to show your support is to show these businesses gratitude by sending a thank-you note or email. Another way is to simply be mindful of the care they are taking in their stores and restaurants to keep their employees and customers safe. Best practices include wearing your mask if required, using hand sanitizer, and doing your part to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

Q& A What made you get into music? My mom was my first musical inspiration. She was always singing and playing guitar. When I was little, she was in a singing competition and made it to the finals in Nashville, Tennessee. When she returned home, I watched the competition back with her. There was a little girl in the competition and although I was always inspired by my mom, seeing that little girl on the same stage as my mom was the extra inspiration I needed to get started. That day, I told my mom I wanted to sing. From that moment on, she took me along to all of her gigs, band practice, karaoke, and eventually put me into every singing competition she could find. She had me performing at fairs, festivals, talent shows, anything she could find. When I was 9 years old, she took me to my first concert. We saw Wynonna Judd. My mom distracted security and I hopped on stage to slip Wynonna my moms demo. Wynonna put her hand on her hip and said, got on her microphone and said “What can I do for you honey?” She held the mic near my mouth and I replied “let me sing”. Of course she didn’t take me seriously but the sound of that sold out coliseum roaring stayed with me all of these years. It was a life changing moment for me. Shortly after, I performed with my mom at the Buddy Holly Anniversary Memorial Event in Clear Lake, Iowa. We performed for the Legendary Buddy Holly’s wife, Maria Holly. Maria hugged me that night, and told me to never stop singing.

How would you describe the sound of your music? I have an eclectic taste in music and that reflects in my music and singing style. I would describe it as guitar driven Country meets R&B, with a hint of Pop, Rock, and Blues.

Nikki's Story 24-year old Nikki Gal is doing it all from artist to fashion designer to mental health advocate to multi-faceted entrepreneur. Upon discovering her dreams to pursue fashion modeling at age fifteen, she decided to leave the modeling industry after four years and two modeling contracts later to pursue more for her life. In 2019, Nikki took a risk- to start her own digital design company See Thru Nikki. Fast forward to 2022, See Thru Nikki has become a widely recognized platform appearing in various media outlets such as Good Morning America, Page Six, and People Magazine. In 2021, Nikki launched her mental health advocacy platform, Raw Talk with Nikki Gal. “Mental health has always been a priority of mine. I want to give women a voice, a platform, and a purpose. I want them to accept themselves in the raw.” Nikki says. Nikki’s motivation to make mental health a topic has helped women across the world, gaining listeners from over forty countries among launching 150 interviews. Her newest projects include Galvanize by Nikki Gal, a content consulting company to guide aspiring entrepreneurs with their goals, Shots By Gal, a film based photography company, as well as her intimates line, Gal Intimates. “I will never stop doing, creating and moving. That’s what we need more of, not a Jack of all trades, but a WOMAN of all trades.”

72 WQMagazine.com

Q&A Q: Why did you make the decision to stop modeling? A: I wanted to take control of my own destiny, and leave behind things that I felt uninspired by. If you’re not pursuing something you love, why are you pursuing it? That was the question I had to face within myself and my career direction. Even though the modeling industry gave me many opportunities that I am grateful for to this day, I limited myself so much in the process as I didn’t give myself much room to grow. It was a risk taking moment where I had to sacrifice one passion for another, in hopes for a more liberating and flexible career. That other passion was my creative mindset- which is my biggest power tool I now use everyday. Q: How did you get into designing? A: I’ve always been a creative soul since the start of my life- it is my calling. I was initially drawn and introduced to the digital design world via a graphic design class when I was 14, and it became my passion over the years. Now just 10 years later, I have transformed my artistic passion into a full-time career. The digital design industry has given me the endless power to dream, yet take control of my own destiny. Q: Where do you get your inspiration? A: All my inspiration derives from my dear family, my beautiful friends, as well as other incredible artists I’ve met throughout my journey. They have all taught me the importance of patience, the power of keeping your mind open, as well as never being afraid to start and finish new projects.

Q: What is your favorite quote, motto or mantra and why?

A: “Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.” - Maya Angelou This quote has spoken to me in many ways throughout my career. Success really is a self embrace process. You have to like yourself to put your best foot forward while also truly believing in yourself. Only YOU hold the power.

Background

Nikki Gal is a former fashion model, entrepreneur, mental health advocate, speaker, content consultant and designer. Gal began her professional career as a model in early 2014, and made the decision to end her career all together in 2018. Leaving the modeling industry was a difficult yet wise decision on her part, which motivated her to pursue more opportunities for her life. Since then, she has created her own success as a entrepreneur of digital design company See Thru Nikki, founder of mental health advocacy non-profit and podcast Raw Talk with Nikki Gal, founder and designer of intimates line, Gal Intimates, founder of content and branding consultant company, Galvanize by Nikki Gal, as well as founder of photography/film company, Shots By Gal. Nikki Gal as well as her works have appeared in Cosmopolitan, People Magazine, CIO Today Magazine, The Sun, Daily Mail, Page Six, as well as television program, Good Morning America. Gal’s mission is to encourage all women that they are capable of every dream they put their mind to and to never limit themselves- anything is possible.

Links to my websites: Q: Tell us about your mental health advocacy. A: The topic of mental health has always been a topic I’ve wanted to bring awareness to. From my own experience of being around others through the years, I noticed the topic of mental health became a rather difficult one to discuss. I want to break that. I want to break the labels, the preconceived notions, as well as the harmful stigmata. I wish to bring awareness among each other as women so that we can grow to talk about our feelings without being afraid. I want to enlighten unity, even though we can feel very much alone at times. No one is ever alone- if you are going through something, someone else is as well. That is okay. We are all in this together.

WOMEN ON A MISSION Kaitlyn Kenealy 74 WQMagazine.com

E

ducation was my only way out and although I know that path isn’t for everyone, it was foundational in building what I am and who I am today. I was raised by a single mother of 4 children and we didn’t have much growing up, but we did have unconditional love and as I reflect on my journey that love is one of the pillars of my success. I am the first generation to go to graduate college and continue to higher education to obtain two master’s degrees. Throughout my educational career I never got to have the traditional experience as I had to work multiple jobs throughout and had no one to assist me with the financial support, but my love of learning and knowing this was my way out were always at the forefront of my mind and my mother would constantly remind me, “ in the long run, Kaitlyn you will be grateful for the experience because you earned it.” Education and having these degrees meant that no one could ever take it away from me and I was going to have to earn it through hard work, dedication, perseverance, trials, and the un-traditional route of college. It’s through education and following my heart and passion that I have been able to achieve and

reach my goals, because education allowed me to find myself and grow through what I was going through in a safe environment. The seeds of education that I planted are now starting to bloom and as my mother stated above- I am grateful because I earned it, and no one can take it away from me. Currently, I own my own private practice and work as a fully licensed psychotherapist. I recently wrote and published my first book: Healing is Messy AF and I have a podcast called: Tea Time with the Psychos. This year alone I have won: Young Professional of the Year, Woman of Achievement Award, and made Brainz Magazine’s Top 500 list. But truthfully my work in the mental health arena is where my passion and drive come alive. My platform is built around breaking the stigma on mental health and sharing my story because community and connectedness are what is going to heal the world. Let’s share our stories, heal together, and break the stigma on mental health because no one can take your healing away either!
