TORTURE IN THE UAE The UAE Government has signed a number of international agreements which prohibit all forms of psychological and physical torture. Yet, various forms of torture have been practiced inside Emirati jails.
Forms of Torture in Emirati Jails
Solitary confinement
Carried out in AlRazeen Prison
Enforced disappearance
Pulling out prisoner’s fingernails
Plucking hair out of prisoner’s head
Beating on the soles of the prisoner’s feet
Suspending the prisoners upside down
Amounts to 9 months in some cases
International Humans Rights organisations have recorded these violations and called for them to stop Gabriela Knaul, Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers, asked the Emirati Government to form an independent committee to investigate allegations concerning the instances of torture and ill-treatment during imprisonment. Knaul contends that Emirates should do its best to apply Human Rights recommendations. Some International Humans Rights organisations have recorded tens of accidents of torture, enforced disappearances and ill-treatment of the detainees and their families, and have called for the inhumane practices to be stopped immediately.
