Travel Advisory – Floods in Sri Lanka
You must be aware of the floods in Sri Lanka, in the last few days. The government has advised people living near rivers and hills prone to landslides, to evacuate, as heavy rains are expected to continue. Even Colombo is threatened by the swollen River Kelani. As of now, 146 are dead, 112 missing, 52 injured and over 15 districts affected due to the floods. The heavy rain occurred in a short period of time, displacing over 100,000 people across the island. The expressway from Colombo to Matara, the route taken by tourists to head to the south coast, remains flooded in several areas. The meteorology department said there could be heavy rainfalls of above 100 millimeters in central Sri Lanka within the next 24 hours. However, Maj. Gen. Sudantha Ranasinghe, overseeing the Sri Lankan military’s rescue operations said that, the worst danger had passed. Floodwaters have begun to recede. However some areas are still inundated.

India has dispatched three naval vessels to deliver relief aid within short notice. The foreign ministry said that an appeal had been made to the United Nations and it’s neighboring countries to provide assistance, search and rescue operation being one. The most immediate needs are bottled water, food, sanitation and hygiene kits. Ichiqoo is contributing in a small way by sending funds to our local partners and friends in Sri Lanka to buy supplies for the affected people. If you wish to help in any small way, please feel to get in touch with us. We will connect you with local organizations that are collecting relief funds and supplies to help the flood victims.
Lack of Drinking Water. Lack of Electricity. Non-Stop Rain! Monsoon season in the South of Sri Lanka is usually from May to September. Sri Lankan Meteorology officials said that the rains experienced in the last few days were the worst since 2003. As much as a monsoon in Sri Lanka is an experience that we shout out for, this time it has taken an ugly turn. Ichiqoo would advise you not to travel to Sri Lanka until the situation improves. We will get back to you, as soon as we get word from the ground, that it is all back to normal.
