The stylish duo When I think of “celebrity stylists”, New York or LA immediately comes to mind.

However, that was before I was introduced to Peter and Mark of PETERMARK SALON in Delray Beach, Florida. Editor’s Letter This year has been a turning point for our society economically, globally and spiritually. People have lost jobs, homes and families, and we as Americans are all still trying to climb that ladder of success and to stay on top. With the economic crisis happening, it’s not surprising that society as a whole has stopped splurging on items related to fashion. The saying still holds true “You look as good as you feel”. So although you are in a situation where you don’t have the means to spend on luxury designer brands, don’t discourage yourself. There is always something lurking in your closet that you forgot about that is back in style and will make you feel fabulous for the moment. Enjoy each day, count your blessings and be grateful for what you have. There is always someone else that is worse off than you. Make a resolution this year to be thankful for what you have and remember that giving to someone always makes you feel better than receiving. So buy something special for someone close to you and see how much more of an impact that makes than just splurging on a new purse.

resh into a newly NYC-based fourth season of her hit show on Bravo™, “The Millionaire Matchmaker”, the outspoken Patti Stanger is a busy gal. For a decade she’s been running The Millionaire’s Club, an exclusive dating service for successful singles in search of ideal mates.

She receives millionaire clients through audition videos and interviews before commencing the matching process and is known for her quick tongue and equally quick and accurate compatibility evaluation skills.

In the midst of a characteristically hectic afternoon at the Millionaire’s Club, I was lucky enough to speak with Patti about life, love and fashion. She carried on precisely as any fan might imagine - with wit, candor and speed. Ever the multi-tasker, between statements she’d call to assistants, ensuring certain matters were in order and adding an endearingly authentic quality to the conversation. At times I almost had to remind myself to return volley, as listening to Patti’s insights is as captivating as watching her program.

Being a third generation matchmaker, are there any words of wisdom you carry with you? Never settle. One of my favorite

Are there any “settlements” you’ve had to dispose of? Yeah. I mean, I’m not going to

tell you who I got rid of because I was settling, but yeah (laughs)! You know what I mean? Everybody goes through that period where you think you’re not gonna find anyone and you get depressed and you go for the guy next door - the best friend - and then you realize there’s no chemistry or there’s no passion and you just basically say “no thanks!”

And if you can’t call me on the phone, you’ve got issues. If you’re e-mailing me and texting me and talking through the internet, you’re a ghost. You’re a phantom.

That means you’ve got some serious, serious, serious intimacy issues. A real woman wants to pick up the phone and hear your voice.

You were more in the fashion world originally, right? I wasn’t even in the fashion

world. Basically, I was going to be a screenwriter. I went to film school at the University of Miami. I wanted to be Sherry Lansing.

Do you remember your first successful match? It was seventh grade and it was one of

my closest friends. I fixed her up with one of the boys at the local Christ-Church dance. The nice Jewish girl went over to Christ-Church to pick up a nice shiksa-boy. And she ended up being with him all through high school.

So you really have it in your blood! Yeah, I always

You say couples should date through four seasons before marriage. What do

So if I go size zero and I buy a pair of hootie-tooties... it’s like you think every girl should look like that and that’s because the media has presented it that way. Then with airbrushing, you expect me not to have one little wrinkle. Everything should be symmetrical. I should have angel cheeks - perfect high cheekbone cheeks - and big full lips, and I should come off looking like Angelina Jolie. Come on. Come on! And then you cross over to New York and you expect me to have a Harvard education, a great family background... and then you expect me to cure cancer and be the perfect mom at the end of the day. The expectations are off the roster.

So would you ever recommend online dating services? Yes! I have an online dating

service called PSxoxo.com. And it’s for the thousandaire. It’s not for the really rich guy. It’s for the guy who wants to get a nice girl and have great sex and great fun and wants to meet the right person.

So I do recommend online dating. Online dating is great! You meet people you would never meet in your own environment. There’s nothing wrong with it, you just have to be sensible about it.

How do you handle clients who openly hit on you during the interview process? I’m

not really attracted to them, to be honest with you. But... I shouldn’t say that. The interview process in “Millionaire Matchmaker”... the show’s casted. They’re not my real clients. But my real clients, I’ve only had maybe two or three [hit on me] in my ten years of being in business. It’s really... it doesn’t usually happen, to be honest with you. I’m either too old or I talk too much or I’m too bossy... or if they’re sexually attracted, I’m not sexually attracted to them. I haven’t met the right guy to say “wow, i really want him!” It hasn’t happened yet.

How can you tell when clients are wasting your time by gold-digging? When a woman

comes in and she starts to ask about the money and his houses and she doesn’t talk about the person himself, that’s what that is!

So they’re right up front with it? Oh yeah, gold-diggers come right out, you just don’t wanna hear it! They’re flippers. They flip to Bill Gates.

Well, if you do anything dangerous, like if they’re an alcoholic and they put a girl in a car and I get two or three reports that this person is drinking too much, I take away their privileges. I hand them over to a therapist or doctor. I say “Go to rehab, get clean, I’ll hold your membership for you.” Technically I can take it away, but I don’t. If you have addiction problems, you’re bulimic, you’re a sex addict... I want you to get healthy. And I’m not mean. I want you to come back in clean and let’s start all over again.

As a recovering shopaholic, what today can you still not live without? Shoes. And I

was just shopping for them now as I was talking to you (laughs)! I was buying my two pairs of Moschino™ shoes, okay? I’m online and I’m going “Oh my God, I shouldn’t be doing this while I’m talking to you!” I have a crush on these shoes right now so I’m like going, “Oh, Moschino™! Oh, Louis Vuitton™!” Yeah. I am a shoe crack addict. Aren’t all girls though?

I’m also a cocktail ring whore. I’ll do anything for a cocktail ring. Diamonds? Oh my God, I don’t even want to tell you what I would do for those.

What should a girl not wear on a first date?

Have you found clients respond to you differently since you’ve attained a certain level of celebrity? I think there’s more

respect. I think that’s good. But there’s also wanting more attention from mommy, stamping their feet.

Are there certain types of clients you refuse to work with? It’s not that I refuse, but I

can’t service the HIV community because I don’t have HIV clients. I don’t service people that expect me to do checks for breast implants or threesomes. I am not in the swingers community and I’m not going to jail for anyone. Those kind of crazy, kinky people - the Jesses or the Tigers of the world if you will. And when a girl comes in 500 pounds, or a guy comes in 500 pounds - it works easier if it’s a guy - but if a girl [like that] comes in and she wants Matthew McConaughey, which you’re gonna see on the last episode of the season, I can’t make you get that guy.

You gotta hit the gym to get the guy. Like attracts like. If you don’t look like a ten you ain’t gettin’ a ten.

You should never show all the assets. Too much skin kills the beast. If you want to show a little cleavage, fine, but then cover your legs or your arms up. Don’t reveal the entire package!

You wanna leave something for dessert.

Why are men more attracted to conservative women? Because you want to imagine

what she looks like underneath. You want to do the secretary thing. That Maggie Gyllenhaal thing. You wanna go, “Ooh, I wonder what her breasts look like. Ooh, I wonder what her stomach looks like!” You’re imagining! And that’s what lingers in your mind

when you leave the date and that’s what makes you want to call me again. If I show everything and you have sex with me, oh my God! You’re thinking I’m a whore, I must do this to everybody!

A lot of your tips seem based in innate humanity, our instincts. It’s my grandmoth-

er’s philosophy. She always says “Less is more”.

So what should men like me be wearing to a first date? Jeans and a t-shirt and a great

leather jacket in the Winter is phenomenal, but if you’re in Florida you wanna wear a really nice button-down, striped Ben Sherman shirt, a really great pair of Rock & Republic jeans and cool sneakers if you’re doing the Converse thing... or if you can’t afford really nice, expensive shoes. But when you do the Gucci loafer, no socks on, white pants and the striped pink and white shirt, you either signal ‘gay’ or that you’re a pansy man. I’m gonna walk across the street. I wanna see my rugged guy. And most women say to me, “We don’t want metro!”

This is an urban myth. No one wants to date their girlfriend. I wanna know that you hit the gym. If you’re in Florida and you’ve got a little short sleeve on, like a Donna Karan t-shirt, I wanna see a little pop at the end of the sleeve, you know?

What can we expect from the Millionaire’s Club International Inc. in coming years?

Now we’re launched in UK and Canada, and you can buy your own Millionaire’s Club. It’s a million dollars outright based on country and territory. You have all the rights to usage and you get a CD-ROM with contracts and a manual and ads and everything. It’s turnkey, like a Miami condo. And you can buy it now, it’s available. I’d like to see it in countries like in Dubai (UAE)!

How does it feel working on the top rated radio station in the nation? I am lucky

as hell to work at KIIS FM. It’s hard to understand, it’s like comparing it to playing for the Yankees. You work your rear off to get here and then you work double time to stay. This is the first station that feels like a family and we really are like that. KIIS FM is why I got into radio.

this is because the radio industry is constantly changing. You’ll never be 100% perfect. You learn something new daily. And what is really important is learning what the listeners want.

For instance, getting to know what Cindy in Pomona, California does for a living, where she shops, and who her favorite artist is. It’s a challenge and I think that is what definitely keeps us wanting it. I can play the same Black Eyed Peas™ song, 5 times during one of my shifts, but the constant challenge is not introducing the same song the same way.

How would you describe your first radio gig?

My first radio gig . . . worst 13 months of my life. Not because of the station, but because it was in the middle of nowhere, a small town called Moscow, Idaho. I was excited to get my first gig but sad because I had to leave Seattle. I worked the 7pm to midnight shift, but because it was such a small station and we only had 3 employees, most days I would show up to work at 2pm and leave at 5am.

What led you to radio? I can’t for the life of me think that there is a specific reason why I got into radio to be completely honest. I know it sounds strange. If I had to take a guess, I would say that 3 radio personalities that I used to listen to in Seattle inspired me. Hearing them made me want to do that, and I feel like it was a good choice for a career since my dream of being a WWF wrestler never panned out.

What is it about our industry that keeps you wanting to do this? I think what keeps every-

With his massive following in Germany we see why this hottie is becoming so popular in the USA. He has the look, but he is also a genuinely nice guy. Vince does charity work for “Save the Children” in Europe as well as “Hope for Haiti”. He is a member of the Grammy Academy, SAG, and AFTRA. Currently residing in Los Angeles, CA Vince sits down with Memphis from ICON and fills us in on what’s in store for him next. Interviewed by: Memphis on the Radio good, just been busy. But he was so cool and it was great working with him.

When I show up to work it’s just “game on” and after that I can come home and be a pretty boring guy and feel happy about it.

ive-action Looney Tune Steve-O has built a career on the edge of self-destruction.

For years, his recreational life followed suit. Between drugs and a death wish, the “Jackass 3D” star battled deep depression before a revelation steered him toward recovery.

He is now almost three years sober with an autobiography on the way. I had the pleasure of speaking with him as he lounged in his Los Angeles apartment with his pound-rescued pooch. With a signature rasp, he communicates warmly with knowing chuckles. He calls South Florida home and offers insights regarding his new lifestyle, social issues, spirituality and his own dark journey...

It’s easy to look at your TV shows and think you’re a fool, but you’re actually very dedicated to your stunts. Has that changed since going sober?

I feel like there are a lot of people that think I’m boring or lame at this point, so making this new movie I definitely had something to prove. The most important thing has been to learn how to have separation between what I do and who I am. [When “Jackass Number 2” came out], I had no identity separate from the persona of “Steve-O”. Just going to that premiere it seemed to dawn on me that I wasn’t going to have a career forever, you know? I kinda came unraveled. This time around I’ve really put a lot of work into the

Do you feel your public image is going to change?

No one’s gonna call me a sissy when they see “Jackass 3D”, there’s just no question about that.

And I’m much better equipped to deal with this movie coming out than I was last time. Last time I showed up to the premiere and I felt like I was at my own funeral. I was like, “It’s all downhill from here.” I really came unglued.

What was different on set this time?

Oh man, I drove myself to the set, I was on time, I was easy to get along with, I was eager to work. The executive producer said when he was feeling really stressed out, he’d walk over and stand next to Steve-O and that would calm him down, which is crazy because I was always the source of the stress! These guys put up with so much out of me; it’s been a real blessing to be able to work with them as an improved version of myself.

Have the other members of the “Jackass” crew been supportive?

It was Knoxville who pulled the intervention on me! You know you’ve got a drug problem when Johnny Knoxville pulls an intervention on you.

And you’re writing an autobiography?

I’ve been keeping myself real busy lately.

Writing the book, doing stand-up comedy.

I can’t break bones and shove stuff up my butt forever, so I’m trying to figure out the next thing to do. I’ve done some stand-up before but now I’m hitting the comedy clubs every night and it’s going great. I’ve had Dane Cook mentoring me. The other night I went on a couple comics after Sarah Silverman and

immediately before [Cook].

Your story as told by you on SteveO.com is like a wilder version of Kerouac’s “On the Road”. Is this a hint of what’s to come in your book?

You’re reading the shit I wrote in jail? That’s funny. I wrote that in March ‘96. I was living out of a used Ford Tempo. I had nothing going for me whatsoever and I was sitting in jail, absolutely electrified with enthusiasm about how great my life was gonna be! The optimism I was capable of at that time, it just blows me away.

Something becomes clear recounting all these stories from my childhood: When I wrote those pages in jail, I had nothing. Dad instilled in me enough pride that I was never gonna ask him to pay me to be a piece of shit. I did all kinds of crazy shit to get by. I was a freelance bus boy at Denny’s which meant I lurked around until people left and I got to their table before the bus boy. That was an important part of my survival!

Talk about all walks of life, I feel like I’ve walked all walks of life.

Aside from fans, who do you think will be your book’s prime audience?

I can’t really maneuver it. It doesn’t make any sense to try to appeal to a target. Will people dig it? I won’t be surprised. It’s a good story. Like you said, a lot of people would easily assume that I’m an idiot. At the risk of sounding like a douchebag, I think that people who read my book are likely to be surprised to find out there’s more to me than I let on when making “Jackass”.

Are there any tender subjects you suspect will be a challenge to write about?

I’ve had my worst foot out there. I’m not gonna say I’m desensitized to tender subjects but I’ve got nothing to hide. I’m not gonna tell some version of the story that glamorizes me

You’re vegan now. Is that related to the sobriety?

It’s a trip how it all went down. [My psychosis] started in 2006. I don’t understand it. I have my theories, but the fact is I started hearing voices.

I remember them telling me that I was gonna have to face consequences for everything that I did. There were some voices telling me that it was really important to them that I hold my breath. Suffocate myself. I’d be writhing around on the floor trying to do it, hysterically

was at the end of the line. I came across this video on YouTube™ and here’s this Hare Krishna guy from India. This guy bluntly says, “How can you expect to be saved if you eat meat??” He’s just perplexed by this. He’s like, “What rational person can go around killing and eating meat and think they’re gonna be saved?” So I’m sitting here snorting, smoking and drinking and my reaction to this is “Hey! I’ve gotta quit eating meat!!”

It’s so funny, filling myself with drugs and

I don’t wanna be on a soapbox and tell other people what to do. I’m not saying everyone should become a vegan. I’m not gonna save the world because I’m vegan. I’m just trying to get results out of myself, and the results are that I’m a happier person.

What’s the story behind your dog?

[The demons] would make my apartment do wild shit. Curtains would be opening and closing, lights would be flashing. They wanted me to throw away my drugs and all my shoes were impatiently tapping their toes like, “We’re waiting.” One time I was sitting in a [swivel chair] with this pile of drugs in my body and thinking, the way I was going, I wasn’t gonna live much longer. Very distinctly I thought, “I don’t care if I die.” Right when I thought those words, it was like a hand reached in. The chair spun around as if a big strong guy had grabbed it. It was like a fuckin’ mechanical bull. The spirits were saying, “Think again man, that’s not gonna work.”

Some voices would chime in and say they were really worried about me. I remember there being a completely organized, full-on intervention.

When Knoxville came and did that intervention, it was really like my third intervention. I had just hallucinated the first two.

There are all kinds of hallucinations. Tactile hallucinations are where you see it and feel it.

I saw, heard and felt all this stuff. That’s fact.

Still to this day I do not believe that all those hallucinations were the products of drugs. At the risk of sounding hokey, what I believe is that the drugs tore down barriers between me and the spirit world and opened me up. I was made accessible. If these voices and hallucinations were products of drugs, then there would be variation going on, and these weren’t.

I became obsessed with this spirit world. I

alcohol but immediately when I watch this YouTube™ clip it becomes imperative for me to quit eating meat. It’s a drug-crazed maniac that arrived at this but I’ve been sober for two and a half years and my belief has not changed one bit. After this life there’s more to deal with, and that’s a rad thing, but I immediately got so freaked out by what this guy said about being saved and eating meat that I became terrified about what the voices told me about facing consequences. Less than a month later, Knoxville rolls in with the gang and they do this intervention on me and they lock me up in the psych ward. I bounced around different psych wards and rehab centers for a full six months, then I went into a sober living environment. I was serious enough about being sober that I kept myself in that halfway house until I had two full years of sobriety.

Over this course of time I became hip to the idea that it’s important to replace fear as a motivator - to not be motivated by fear but rather by faith. Well, people don’t like the word “faith”. I think “love” is synonymous. So I worked past being afraid of punishment for eating meat. That doesn’t mean all of a sudden I was cool with eating meat, all it means is I shifted my perspective. By not eating meat and having a more compassionate lifestyle, every time I eat I’m respecting myself, other life and

ass. He’s the cutest little dog, but he’s just so messed up. He’s got issues. Nobody wanted him. I saved him from death row. He bites people, he destroys shit, he’s a complete pain in the ass, he won’t shut up... he’s just like me. I can totally relate to hurting people, destroying shit, being a complete non-stop pain in the ass.

I dunno if this is like a living ammends, but he’s my little angel and he’s come into my life to teach me about love and tolerance and give me a lot of my own medicine.

Are you still involved with your shoe line, Sneaux Shoes?

I can safely say that I burned that bridge with the Sneaux Shoes people. It was a good relationship - those people are great and I’ve got a lot of gratitude - but I don’t wear anything that comes from animals anymore.

How would you like to be remembered?

I feel like I just want what everyone else wants.

I just wanna be happy. That was kinda my downfall. I was getting too worried what other people thought. And I still have that in me.

Like I said, I want to prove to everyone else that I haven’t become lame because I’m sober, but what’s most important - and it’s the most important thing for everybody - is to be happy, and that’s what I’m working on.

Steve-O (a.k.a. Stephen Glover)

has become a household name and it all started when he snatched a video camera from his father’s closet when he was fifteen years old.

From there he started producing homemade skateboarding videos featuring dangerous stunts mixed with comical behavior.

What was your first job ever? (excluding movies/films etc) My first

job was working at Disneyland. Then, while there, because of my unique voice, I started getting attention and ended up in the entertainment business.

Did you ever think you would move to Hollywood and be in films when you were younger? No, when I was a kid, I was fasci-

nated with killer whales and wanted to be a marine biologist. I was such a geeky school girl who studied all the time, and I made huge posters about marine life. The problem is I’m really petite and as I got older I realized just how huge a whale really is, and I’m terrified of sharks and deep dark water! It’s funny how that didn’t work out!

How did you get started with your acting career? I got pulled into voice-over work be-

cause of my voice! My first job was voice acting for a Japanese cartoon series called “Gunparade March”. Then I started acting and modeling. My first official acting job was a “Sex in the City” parody for Mad TV® where I impersonated Kristen Davis’ character Charlotte. Then I started modeling for various print ads/TV shows/movies etc.

I noticed you are type cast a lot as “pretty girl” or “model”, do you think you will ever get out of that role and try something more daring? Absolutely. I want a career that lasts

a lifetime and so, in that case, I do not always want to be seen as just “the model.” My agent and manager have convinced me that I’ve got a flair for comedy, and lately, I’ve have a good run of comedy shows like FOX’s “Raising Hope” and NBC’s “Community”; so I would really love to bring a very comedic character to life as a series regular on a show and really show people what I am made of. But down the road, I’d also love to do more animated voiceover work and theatrical roles. I would love to play a vampire, witch, or some kind of fantasy character for a movie. A villain would be daring and fun too! I love to push the envelope on stuff and bring new and exciting characters to life! My biggest goal is to work with Tim Burton on something. I’m quirky and “out there”, and I love how artistic and dark his stuff can be!

What is your favorite film you have ever worked on and why? I love everything I have

worked on! Each thing has helped me grow as an actor and as an individual. It’s like pieces of a puzzle: they all slowly start coming together to make the full picture. I’m enjoying the journey and every single job.

Do you have a mentor? My mentor was Cynthia Songe. She just passed away, which was really hard on me. When I found out, it was like someone punched me in the chest and I had no air. She gave me the confidence to fly in this industry! She was my mom away from home, teacher, coach, friend, and someone I loved and respected a lot! Without her, I do not think I would have made it this far! Joey Paul Jensen also helped me out in the beginning. She was

It’s not really acting; it’s more about being a personality. Yes, we work hard as actors on our craft building the skills and tools we need to be successful and, in that case, reality does. my first acting teacher and she really showed me that this was something that I needed to do and learn. She taught me how to act and introduced me to this business. She also is the reason why I met Cynthia Songe. I have met a lot of wonderful people in this business that have been great mentors and have helped me immensely! Who is the funniest actor/actress you have ever worked with? I loved working

with Chevy Chase on “Community”! I never told him, but I loved him in his classic movie “Caddyshack”! Although, he did have some

tough competition with that gopher; man I loved that gopher!

If you could act with anyone, who would it be? Adam Sandler. Lots of people have told me that I should play his sister or something in a movie. They think it would be funny as heck! I think it would be fun to do a comedy with him!

What is your take on reality TV? Do you think it is taking a lot away from actors/ actress’ who work so hard to get to where they are? Yes and No. No, it’s just another

Do you have a five year plan? What is it? I have been very fortunate to work consistently, and I have enjoyed bouncing around on different stuff; this has always meant something new and fresh. But now I would like to settle into one or two projects as a regular; this would give me a chance to sink my teeth into a character for a while and show people even more of what I am made of as an actress. I would love to continue to work on a few movies here and there between things. Also, I have written my first feature length script with a respected co-star of mine, Michael Desante, called “House of Lies;” and I have also written a pilot for an animated series called “Dot.Nat.” I would like to start producing my own projects and continue to act, write, and produce even more stuff.

Where can we look forward to seeing you in the future? I just co-starred on NBC’s

“Community” and my next project you can see me on is FOX’s “Raising Hope”. My character is definitely interesting; they call me the “Dirty Angel.”

HOW TO KEEP HEALTHY DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON

As we all prepare for the holiday season, one thing usually sticks out in the mind as a given: lots of food! Well, aside from the daunting task of trying to not overeat and gain those extra pounds, one other thought comes to mind. How healthy are we eating during the holidays in this country? After all, winter time brings with it the tide of colds and flus, so we must not weaken our defenses and over-indulge in the sweet and calorie-booming holiday foods.

by Omid Rabbani, MD During normal digestion and metabolism, there is a process called oxidation that occurs every time we breathe in oxygen, which combines with another substance to form an oxide. Our bodies also convert a percentage of this oxygen into free radicals, electrically-charged molecules which help us to fight off disease and illness. We also accumulate free radicals through environmental factors. However, if we accumulate too many free radicals or the wrong types, then this is a risk to our health and may cause damage to cells in the body. This is where anti-oxidants help to control this process from getting out of hand. Some anti-oxidants are in fact free radicals themselves whose purpose is to neutralize the other

harmful circulating free radicals.

So how do you get some of this good stuff? Well, there are a number of good anti-oxidants that are readily available. Vitamin A (found in carrots, broccoli, and tomatoes), Vitamin C (such as in berries and citrus fruits), Beta-Carotene (found in dark leafy green vegetables and orange-colored fruit), Vitamin E (also found in leafy green vegetables as well as nuts and seeds), and Selenium (found in fish, eggs, garlic and grains). Other anti-oxidants include lutein (in green leafy vegetables and egg yolks), lycopene (seen in tomatoes, carrots and watermelon) and flavonoids (available in citrus fruits, green tea and dark chocolates). Well, you may ask, what is the

most important anti-oxidant to take? Many people would agree that Glutathione, something that is made by the human body, can likely claim this status. You can eat foods that contain precursors that eventually make Glutathione in the body, but you cannot really take a supplement directly that will guarantee higher blood levels. The precursors to Glutathione are Cysteine, Glycine and Glutamate.

Some foods containing these amino acids include asparagus, avocado, spinach and broccoli.

Just remember, between the gravy, mashed potatoes and turkey, don’t forget to have a good helping of your preferred anti-oxidant foods! As always, moderation is the key to well-being. Happy Holidays!

Have Heart

Founded in 1924, the American Heart Association today is the nation’s oldest and largest voluntary health organization dedicated to building healthier lives, free of heart disease and stroke. These diseases, America’s No. 1 and No. 3 killers, and all other cardiovascular diseases claim nearly 870,000 lives a year. In fiscal year 2006-07 the association invested more than $554 million in research, professional and public education, advocacy and community service programs to help all Americans live longer, healthier lives.

Cari Hahn is a young survivor of cardiovascular disease. Here is her story: When Cari Hahn was 12 years old, she took a ski vacation to Colorado that neither she nor her family would ever forget.

After a full day of fun on the slopes, she and her older sister, Katie, stayed up to watch a bit of television. At first, when Cari started to suffer shortness of breath, her sister thought she was playing. But when the problems persisted, Katie ran for their mother, Nancy.

Cari was in cardiac arrest.

Nancy, a nurse, successfully performed CPR and Cari was rushed to the children’s hospital in Denver. “Everyone was waiting for me,” Cari recalls. “I remember that all the doctors, all the nurses, they were waiting for me to come.”

Later that night, Cari suffered a second cardiac arrest. Doctors decided to outfit her with an internal pacemaker and defibrillator before letting her return to her family’s home in Naples, FL, several days later.

Now a healthy, happy 16-year-old, Cari is able

to enjoy an active life. She’s on the dive team at her high school and has been a member of the school’s flag team for the past three years; this year, she’s even a section leader. Through the Southwest Florida American Heart Association, she regularly speaks about her previous experiences with cardiovascular disease, and when she does, her audiences are often stunned.

“Most people are just really shocked,” Cari says.

“And most of my friends don’t believe me when I tell them. I’m a normal kid, except I can’t do physical sports, like contact sports. I can run around like a normal kid, and act like a normal kid and I don’t have a problem talking about it.”

She is enthusiastic about promoting the American Heart Association’s ongoing mission to build healthier lives free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke.

Cari has shared her story at numerous Southwest Florida American Heart Association events, including two Heart Balls, an annual gala fundraiser that is one of the organization’s signature events. She has also spoken at the Go Red For Women Luncheon

and appeared on television commercials.

In addition to explaining her initial ordeal with cardiovascular disease, she also describes what happened in the ensuing years. In the summer prior to her eighth grade school year, her family was on a vacation in North Carolina. She began to encounter problems with her pacemaker and defibrillator, and her family believed the area was infected. They contacted Cari’s cardiologist in St. Petersburg, FL, who urged them to travel there immediately.

Cari was quickly outfitted with a new pacemaker and defibrillator. Her life continued without problems until recently, when complications turned what should have been a minor, one-hour surgery to replace a battery into an all-day affair.

Despite these occasional obstacles, Cari remains upbeat and committed to raising awareness about cardiovascular disease and prevention. “My main thing was, at the beginning, to let people know that it could happen to anyone at any time. Most people identify heart disease with an older generation. It was rare for me to have it. I was really lucky,” she says.

s a hairstylist, I get asked this same question every year, “What’s in for hair this year?” Ihate to admit this but honestly, this question always makes me cringe simply because there never seems to be one simple answer to sum it all up. Not one trend fits all but somehow I feel I’m expected to have that “magic” answer.

I pondered this question on a recent trip to New York, my favorite place to be inspired by! The best thing someone of my profession can do is go to New York and just look around and feel the vibe. I always feel just a little bit cooler whenever I spend time in New York. For many years I worked not too far from the city and spent a lot of time there working before I moved to this tropical paradise, Naples. As lovely as it is here, I need to feed my creative juices and go back at least once a year to participate in New York Fashion Week. This past September I got more than I bargained for and was asked to assist on a Vogue™ photo shoot. When I was asked to write this article about myself, hair and what’s hot, I asked myself, “how can I bridge the gap between editorial/runway hair and the everyday woman?”

Honestly, the overall feel you get from the most stylish people you see in New York, whether it be on the street, a Vogue™ set or backstage at a fashion show, is that they put very little effort into their look. It all looks like an after thought although I know they put a lot of thought and effort into looking like they don’t give a damn yet looking cool. I mean really, look how guys wear their hair all messy these days.

Chai’s men show, the hairdressing team was instructed to make the guys look like they’d been hiking for a week and hadn’t washed their hair. We then sprayed Bumble and Bumble™ surf spray into their hair and diffused it into a purposeful, perfect mess.

Well here are some tips of the trade to looking care free and gorgeous like you just ”rolled out” that way. First, let’s talk about dry shampoo. Dry shampoo or dry texturizing spray has been used by editorial hairdressers for quite some time now. It creates volume without stickiness, texture without heaviness.

It’s that dry dirty hair look without the oil. If your hair is soft and fine, with this product, you will have the hair you always dreamed of! It’s magic in a can. My favorites are Oribe™ Dry texturizing spray and Bumble and Bumble™ hair powder.

Hairspray….typically, I’m an antihairspray hairstylist. If you saw me doing an up do for a bride or hair for a shoot, one of the last things I grab is hairspray.

No one should rely on hairspray to make the hair. It all starts with a good cut, set, etc…. besides, hard hair is not sexy! Hairspray does have a purpose however, which is to lock out humidity, add texture and tame “fly-aways”. At any given fashion show during fashion week whether it be New York, London or Paris, you can’t but notice a sea of gold cans which is Loreal’s Elnett Satin™ hairspray. Elnett used to be only attainable in Europe but can now be found at every Target® across America! Amen!

My tip is if you have a few fly aways or new hair growth that won’t lie down, spray

your brush with spray to tame down those pesky pieces.

Open any fashion magazine and you cannot avoid seeing many versions of waves, loose curls, beachy looking hair.

The look can range from an old Hollywood look that’s polished and shiny (think Kim Kardashian) to a loose carefree look that looks like you’ve been frolicking on the beach (think Jen Aniston). I’m sorry; I know you’ve just mastered that flat iron too! Oh well, if you haven’t already done so; go grab yourself a big flat iron.

To create the most natural, soft look (which I prefer) curl your hair in big sections, leaving the ends out, run your fingers through the curls to break them up. Follow up with dry texturizing spray or dry shampoo for a true beach look. If you are really good with your hair, I suggest you try my favorite styling tool on the planet, The Nalu Waver by Rsessions tools Now I know some of you are still attached to your flat irons and love your straight hair. It’s okay. Like I said, not all trends fit all. I tend to go back and forth from straight to wavy. If you have hair that takes you forever to blow dry and flat iron only to have it frizz at the first drop of humidity, get yourself a Brazilian Blowout. All of the celebs are doing this now. I have one and I do them on most of my clients. My blow dry time is cut in half and I don’t need to flat iron. My hair truly feels like spun silk. Having this treatment also allows you more choices.

So what’s “in”now? Staying true to yourself and being the most beautiful person you can be! Just remember, make sure it looks effortless!

Designer: The saying, “you don’t choose your career, your career chooses you” holds true when it comes to Vietnam-born and American Designer Thuy Diep. A graduate of Brown University, she majored in finance and business and started her career as a consultant at Price Waterhouse. Little did she know, she would one day quit her day job and go back to school for her first love - fashion. By Brandy Pham 30

Thuy Diep y ou could say fashion ran in her blood, but you’d have to know more about her background to understand why.

Thuy was born into a family of tailors; while growing up in Vietnam, her parents ran a tailoring school and custommade clothing shop before coming to the states.

She developed her love for clothing, tailoring, and style at a very young age. One of her earliest child-

hood memories were her parents having rolls of fabrics stored, laying around, and draping all over their house. “My sisters and I would play dress up and I always made costumes for myself. When I was younger, I made clothing for my dolls, but I didn’t know exactly what profession I wanted to go into. I just knew it had to be something creative.

The idea of working in a traditional working environment always terrified me.”

When Thuy went back to school, she didn’t just go to any school – she studied at the famed Parsons School of Design in New York City. After

graduating, she worked with a New York-based Parisian atelier that offered draping and pattern making services for high-end designers such as Peter Som, Zac Posen, and Carolina Herrera to name a few; then went on hold other diverse design jobs in fashion before launching her eponymous women’s ready-to-wear collection.

Thuy’s namesake label (pronounced Twee) is indeed a self-reflection of her personal style and what her world consists of. Her classic sportswear has a modern twist for today’s modern woman and is known for her tailoring, draping, and her Winter 2010 iCON

Thuy’s Spring 2011 Collection consists of a fresh, vibrant, and warm color palette of taupes, mustard yellows and greens, sunburnt orange, purples, fuchsias, and antique ivory filled the runway. The collection composed of beautifully designed and fabricated trench coats, cropped jackets, peter-pan-collared blouses, printed and embellished shift dresses, full skirts, delicate ruffles and pleats. Her eyelash and floral prints were stunning and an absolute favorite. Thuy strongly demonstrates that her ideal customer is a hip, classic, but modern woman, who can be any age. That’s what I love most about Thuy’s designs – there isn’t an age limit on her clothing, there’s nothing “too young” or “too old.” Thuy has the perfect balance of style and elegance and it truly depends on the individual who is wearing her clothing that can pull it off.

Which is interesting that you asked, because we’re also creating this creative consulting service and the Asia Society has hired THUY to design this whole interior experience at the Waldrof Astoria for their Christmas Gala Dinner this December.

I’m really excited about this project. So this is another component to the THUY brand. As for accessories and handbags, I’ve designed jewelry and clutches for my previous shows and had such a positive response. I’m also working on designing shoes for my next show, so we’ll see where that goes. I haven’t officially launched different lines to the brand, but by introducing them in my shows, I’ve been building on the feedback I get… so it’s a great start.”

VIVIENNE WESTWOOD In a country known famously for its “stiff upper lip”, Britain has ironically produced some of the best known and most eccentric fashion personalities in the last century including John Galliano, fashionista Daphne Guinness and the late Alexander McQueen, to name a few. But the Grand Dame of this exceptional assemblage is, quite literally, Dame Vivienne Westwood – for she was given the DBE (Dame Commander of the British Empire)

estwood, born Vivienne Swire in the heart of England’s countryside during World War II, is best known today for being the woman who brought British punk and new wave fashion into the mainstream, but this is in strong contrast to her modest working-class beginnings. Westwood’s early life was singularly ordinary. The daughter of a factory worker and housewife, she began her adult life as the wife of a Hoover factory apprentice and started her working career as a primary school teacher.

But fate would intervene upon her meeting the charismatic character who was the late Malcolm McLaren, former manager of punk bands such as the Sex Pistols and the New York Dolls. This fateful encounter would etch out Westwood’s place in history as a driving force of, not only British fashion, but through the entire industry and thus begin her destiny as a pop icon.

McLaren and Westwood opened their store “Let It Rock” in London in the early 1970’s where they

sold their early creations and revolutionized what would develop into the punk style which included tartan prints, chains, spiked collars and the famous safety pins, made legendary when Westwood stuck one through the Queen’s nose on a t-shirt she created for Sex Pistol Johnny Rotten. But despite these brilliant and iconic symbols, Westwood did not consider herself a true designer until her 1981 Pirate collection with its nod to romanticism and historic references. This interest in the history of fashion would be a resounding theme throughout Westwood’s career and continues to this day.

Today, Westwood’s vast archival collection includes the use of techniques in clothing construction from a variety of moments in history and her collections have literally spanned the centuries with her redesign of corsets, crinolines, tweeds and tartans throughout her career. But not one to follow the rules, Westwood has taken these techniques and turned them upside down in her coolly calculated subversive manner, continuing to reinvent, renew and refresh the fashion industry. And in her own erudite way, she has also become the

Queen of Contradictions, most notoriously when, earlier this year, she told the masses to “stop buying clothes” in her fight against the plague of consumerism. Always the anarchist, Westwood is ever the political activist drawing attention to concerns of climate change and her ’100 Days of Active Resistance’ campaign defined in Dame Vivienne’s words as “the principal idea of active resistance is that you get out of life what you put in and the real experience of the world involves thinking.”

Thought is clearly and resonantly part of Westwood’s agenda which includes her designs and this season’s Autumn/Winter 2010 Red Label collection is no exclusion. Beautifully draped and layered with a hint of tailored sophistication from a bygone era, this season’s collection is chock full of Westwood style with wool pinstripes and plaids, punky prints and slogans placed alongside Edwardian influenced silhouettes. In true Westwood form, the collection seeks to shock and surprise but in an ironically wearable way, thus allowing Westwood to continue to reign as fashion’s preeminent royal.

My day typically ends at 10 pm with my assistants organizing and merchandising for the next day’s projects. I usually unwind with a glass of shiraz checking and responding to emails, then curling up in my bed with my doggies.

What are the pros/cons of being a stylist? The pros of being a stylist is the opportunity to really help both men and women understand fit, proportion, color, and developing their own personal style. The con would be the long hours. Being a stylist is very demanding, you have to be organized, have great time management skills and have a great support system (in your team, a person is only as good as the team that works for them).

Soraya awoke on the Eid ul-Fitr, a holiday time marking the end of the Muslim month of fasting.

She had to prepare herself for namaz (prayer).

Although a time of celebration, this twentytwo year old daughter of a market owner and florist did not look forward to the occasion.

In her hometown of Mashhad, religion is not a choice and has its roots deeply seated in the history of this theocratic country. Soraya was almost finished with her college education in music; a free-spirited woman who called herself a dreamer, she did not wish to settle for herself.

er parents had been gradually persuading her towards a young man who according to them would take care of her and, as a result, she would not have to necessarily work outside of the house. To Soraya the thought of living the life of her deceased grandmother was not an option.

Why should she have to retire from the concept of work just because a man would be legally responsible for â&#x20AC;&#x153;taking care of herâ&#x20AC;?? Her two elder sisters never stood up for anything against her parents, but now, Soraya was almost completely tempted to start a protest against the wishes of her parents and future in-laws. After all, recent events in her country have shown that younger people do have power, guts and glory to challenge the hypocrisy and dogma of days gone by. More than anyone she knew, Soraya had a dream that was so real; a life that Winter 2010 iCON

was too perfect; in the end, she was almost sure that nonsense would shut her down. Today, however, she swore to fight until the truth was made aware to all who deserved to see and hear it. She knew how to proceed, how difficult it would be to tell her parents of her application to a university position so far away from home. The only thing she didn’t know at this point was if she still had any good luck left in her life to pull through this last major struggle. As she headed out the door to offer prayers to Allah, she wondered if life would ever be fair for women in her country.

Even up to the present day, women in the Middle East still continue to experience discrimination and suffer abuse. One thing is for sure, it is not only because of religious background but more of the culture and ignorance. Lack of equal human rights to women, female genital mutilation and unjust means of punishment are some of the most soul stirring acts that occur in this region. The more we see positive that progressively grows in the global climate, the more that still remains and astonishes us Westerners how different life may be for someone else in this world.

Prior to the Islamic revolution of 1979 in Iran, women had enjoyed adequate rights and freedoms in society throughout the Pahlavi Dynasty.

Women had opportunities to become scientists, artists, judges and athletes. Nobel Peace Prize recipient Shirin Ebadi, an Iranian lawyer and former judge, has become an important champion of human rights in Iran. In recent times, Ebadi has attempted to help seven members of the Baha’i Faith, Iran’s largest minority religion that believes in the oneness of humankind and promulgating world peace, who have been wrongly imprisoned on false charges in Iran. The Baha’i Faith religion promotes the equality of men and women and believes in basic human rights for all people. Post-revolution Iran however caused a major loss in human rights for women. Wearing Islamic hijab (head covering and dress) is required of all women and lack of cooperation is punishable if discovered by authorities. Slowly most of the advancements and gains achieved by feminists started to disappear. Women rights activists however are still present and making a concerted effort despite the limitations imposed upon them.

Living in a society and culture that does not accept the equality of women and men is a struggle; living in a society where this is impossible is a nightmare. The majority of women who live in the Middle East have come to some sort of terms with their role in society. It is difficult to resist

and overcome in a place where, if found guilty, one may suffer a hundred lashes or get stoned to death. Although the times seem to indicate that younger generations are beginning to question the ignorance of authority and iron rule of theocracy, there is still a large gap left for women to fill in the society of well-being that is envisioned in a utopian Middle East. One may hope that

revolution of mind and spirit may one day overtake the people of the world who lack insight and understanding to the purpose of life. Women will eventually prevail, if and when the minds of men will realize the importance of this gender to the advancement of society in all matters. May it be a movement that is led by people such as Soraya, a dreamer who envisions equality and justice.

The Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1979 to serve as an international bill of rights for women. It has been ratified by 186 countries. The United States of America, however, is one of seven countries that have not yet ratified CEDAW. The issues related to this treaty include violence against women and girls (to reduce sex trafficking and domestic violence), educational opportunities (for access to primary education and vocational opportunities), political participation (the right to vote, serve on juries and hold political office), marriage and family relations (ending forced marriages and ensuring women have a right to inherit property, maternal health care services (providing access to basic health care), and economic participation (the ability to work and own a business without discrimination). he result is “upcycling”, a term which describes this trend for those style-savvy individuals who want to stretch a dollar and avoid wastefulness and it breeds extraordinary new fashion trends without the big expense. Of course, there is nothing better than the thrill of shopping for a new designer frock or brand-name handbag, but the creativity of mixing, revamping and reviving items one already owns has become an artistic sport in the field of fashion.

The idea is not a new one, street-wear all over the world is the result of just such a

need but with each generation a new twist is added to the old vision. Creative ways of redefining details or making alterations come about with each fresh thought. And in order to be a success, one must first of all learn to shop wisely. What is the newest trend in airline travel? Is it luxurious seating? Fine dining? Free drinks?

Of course not. Its charging the already cash strapped traveling public exorbitant amounts of money for carrying their BAGGAGE.

s I sit upright in my cramped seat on the flight back home from my virgin Vegas trip, broke and weary, I imagine what I could have done with that extra 50 bucks that the airline scammed me for bringing a suitcase on a trip!! Who would foolishly assume that it would be an included aspect of our flight plans for eternity? This guy.

Everybody has to have it, so why shouldn’t they cash in. The more you have, the more it hurts your pockets. An extra overhead stowaway will almost set you back the price of any extra seat. Two suitcases for an extra long excursion and you are out of luck to the tune of triple digit dollars. As I waved goodbye to my extra cash, I thought about all the other kinds of baggage I have had to carry in my travels through this crazy journey called life. Does this plight of having to handle more than you bargained for translate into other aspects of our personal universe? Absolutely. The extra weight we carry into our daily relationships takes an even more serious toll on our lives than just emptying our wallets. It often drains us emotionally, spiritually and often physically as well.

What would be the proper response if somebody you loved and adored came to you

with the sincerest of stares and said, “I know you have your own plethora of problems, your own insufferable issues, your own barrel of burdens…but if you really love me you have no choice but to take on mine as well.”

A blank stare will clearly not cut it, and if the love is truly shared you will surely grin and bear the often times unbearably overwhelming weight. Is it fair? Absolutely not. Is it reality? No doubt.

How much is too much? Who wants to shoulder someone else’s load? How long can you carry on with the weight of somebody else’s world sagging down on your already weary shoulders? Does it make the journey of romance more of a job, than an adventure? Does it take its toll on the happy times, by dragging up the dark and dreary? Would it have made a difference if you knew about what you would be dealing with before you got involved? Is the emotional roller coaster going to take too much of a toll?

There are many different levels of relationship related BAGGAGE that prospective couples have to consider in the early stages of their romantic endeavors. These can be eased in gently and given time to adjust to accordingly.

Or they can be crammed in unmercifully and make matters decidedly worse. How a problem

is dealt with is often more important than the root of the actual situation at hand. Honesty, openness and respect go a long way in dealing with relationship roadblocks.

There are some very specific signs that can let you in on the secret that may be kept in a locked box called the heart. One day you may be best friends and the next you are at each other’s throat. If this is more normal than not, there may be something there to be addressed.

In every relationship there are ups and downs, but there has to be more sunny days than rain clouds hanging overhead.

Do you find him/her avoiding you altogether? Phone calls go unanswered. Texts go ignored. You race home to catch them only to realize they left just because they knew you were going to do just that. Dodging you from anywhere from hours to days, only to reappear as if nothing ever happened, is a very good sign that something is amiss.

What about when they tell you that they love you and will do absolutely everything in their power to make sure the relationship lasts, then turn around and treat you like crap; Insist on commitment and when it happens, throw it all away by cheating. This is a terribly self-destructive defense mechanism that hurts people in incredibly scarring ways.

The amount of weight these former significant others bring back into the new equation differs from one to the next. How long has it been since the sour or possibly sweet separation? How long did those times last? Were there talks or actions of taking the next big step? Are there any thoughts or feelings lingering around to be dealt with in the next round? Is there still an open line of communication between them?

And if not, are there attempts by either party?

What steps, if any, are taken to ensure the others comfort level with those clearly uncomfortable conversations?

You have to work out your heart and mind and hopefully be strong enough to keep from falling down and letting the weight win out. with a vast array of former flings drive you crazy? Is this a sign of insecurity on one person’s part or possibly considered a sign of disrespect to your new and burgeoning relationship that needs and deserves more attention? The effects that remain from previous relationships can be devastating. A wonderful man or woman who wasn’t treated as they felt they should have been will almost assuredly carry with them some anger or resentment into their next attempt at love.

They could be following through on a plan to get back at the men or woman who wronged them by getting back at the next one who just so happened to unwittingly fall into their devious trap. On the serious side, there could have been a history of physical or psychological abuse which was simply never dealt with in the proper fashion or it could be something as petty as an ex forgetting anniversaries or not saying I love you enough. Either way the new guy or gal is going to pay the price.

Whatever the situation is, there will undoubtedly be two questions remaining at the end, or actually the new beginning of the rela-

tionship journey. Is there hope for us to make it through this? And most importantly, is he or she worth the hard work that this is going to take to whether the storm? There is always hope, but it depends on the answer to the second question. If doubt lingers longer than the love it’s a pretty safe sign that it’s not going to work out in the end. If you would do whatever it takes to right the wrongs and fix the faults then anything is possible.

When flying to Las Vegas we have no choice in the matter, but when it comes to matters of the heart the choice is ours to make. Although we can’t avoid the situations we may have gone through or find ourselves currently in the midst of, the way we handle it makes all the difference in the world.

ICON Blue MartiniNaples, FL With fashion at the forefront and style in mind, ICON’s glamorous launch party set the tone for what to expect in the coming months as we continue to gain exposure and readership throughout the most stylish corners of the country On September 1, 2010, ICON celebrated their official launch at Blue Martini in Naples, Florida. A flurry of models, designers, and press crowded the posh space around the runway anxiously awaiting the start of the show.

When the models hit the runway, with hair and makeup styled by Salon International, all eyes were on them. Modeling fashions from Lux Boutique and BCBG, gowns from Petunia’s of Naples, and lingerie from Soma Intimates, they worked the catwalk amidst the flash of the paparazzi.

Guests were treated to an exclusive viewing of the premier issue of ICON, as well as, swag bags filled with favors from the sponsors. Chad Oliver, of ABC’s Channel 7, was in attendance and covered the event on air the following morning.

LIV-Miami Style, fashion & celebrities are to be expected when you attend one of the hottest nightclubs in Miami. With the launch of ICON debuting in LIV at the Fontainebleau the night was exactly what the buzz surrounding was speculating.

September 22, 2010, On the opposite coast, ICON held their Miami launch at LIV Nightclub at The Fontainebleau Hotel, arguably the hottest club of the moment in Miami Beach. With a line that stretched throughout the hotel, and the front doors security kept the partygoers at bay, and maintained their ultra selective policy to ensure the night was a total success.

Editor in Chief, Julie Rabbani made an entrance after being glammed up by the glam squad of PeterMark Salon on the arm of Executive Editor, Omid Rabbani, and greeted guests throughout the night. Psychic Advice q. How can you tell the difference between a vision and a dream when you are in a sleep state? a. This is such a good question! It’s a difficult one to answer and I can only speak from my experiences. I’ve had visions, or precognitive moments, while in a dream state or while sleeping since I was a child. Precognitive means having glimpses of future events that may happen to your own self, to others and global events, including the weather and more.

I thought that precognitive dreams were happening to me but always shrugged it off until as a young adult. I actually remembered waking up from a dream thinking how odd it was that I was dreaming of people that I didn’t know and also a strange house which was mine, but it wasn’t the house that I was living in when I had the dream. About two years afterwards, I had the dream I was living in a new home and having a small get-together with friends. I looked around and realized that it was an image right out of the dream that I had years previously. New friends, new house. It was only a brief moment but it validated that which I already knew, that I was having “visions” of future events in my sleep state. Visions feel different than a dream most of the time. Sometimes it comes as brief flashes of an activity that doesn’t really fit into the dream, and it feels more vibrant or intense. It could be very impressive and easily remembered because of its vibrancy, detail and how vivid and clear it is compared to a dream which can be more easily forgotten, more distant or somehow evasive. Sometimes you can’t tell the difference between a dream and a vision until you’ve had the moment of “deja vu”, where you think that you’ve done this before and might remember that you’ve dreamt it. One thing that you can do is to ask yourself ques-

He sends short e-mail messages saying “let’s fix this” or how miserable he is. We get back together for a few weeks and he disappears again. My boyfriend is illegal. He has lots of secrets. I truly love him and just want to know if he is playing games again this time, or is our break-up for real. I can’t eat, I can’t sleep, I’m miserable without him. I just don’t know if i should give in or give up.

a. I’m so sorry; I do feel your emotional pain. Remember that I only speak what I “hear”. I knew before you stated that he has commitment issues that he has those and more, many more. The other issues are the ones getting in the way. He totally plays games with you and himself. Forgive me for being straightforward, but I have to tell you what I’m seeing. I know you’ve been on this see-saw, pendulumtype ride with him over and over. He disappears, you try to pull away from him and focus on you, and he feels it and comes and finds you for no other reason than control. He doesn’t want the commitment; he doesn’t want you

but doesn’t want you to leave. It’s a control thing with him and relationship immaturity that goes back a long way with him. I’m sure that he’s not aware of his “issues” and even if you tell him, it won’t make any difference. This is something that he needs to discover on his own one day. You, on the other hand, must only focus on you, as hard as it’s going to be, don’t let yourself be pulled back into his game.

You deserve better. You deserve someone that adores you, wouldn’t that is there for you, that lets you be yourself and loves you for it; that will support you in all of your decisions and more.

I know you love him, but it’s time for you to put that love in a part of your heart and seal it up. It’s not going to be easy; distract yourself with different activities. I’m seeing you doing something community-minded, volunteering some of your time for something that will make you feel good. You have a lot to offer, recognize this. You’re going to think about him and don’t beat yourself up about it, give yourself five minutes to cry and then get out and do something.

Don’t take his phone calls, texts or answer him online. When you shut the door on him, you’ll open another door to let someone else in and they are there, in your future. I tell you that I see you happy in the future unless I really saw it and I do. You don’t want sadness, you want joy. It’s yours for the taking, but you have to make the right choice. Keep breathing and love yourself enough to let the Universe bring you a beautiful loving relationship that will make your world a lovely shining place. Love to you.
