NEW YEAR, NEW VIEW

renee@iconiclife.com @iconiclifemag @iconicreneedee

2024 has been on my mind, and I’ve been counting the numbers in my head…2024 is 2+2+4=8. According to a few sources on the power of numerology, when you think of an eight-year, think of building, doing, and creating. It’s expansive. Think of unlocking your power and finding meaning in what you want to create in the new year.

For the team at ICONIC LIFE, we’ve been in expansion mode, adding team members and new issues for the year and perhaps something more. I feel the power of expansion for my clients, too, looking to create new opportunities for themselves—new communities, new locations and new ventures.

I’m feeling the feeling of expansiveness as well, looking at ways to view my role in a new way and help others grow. There’s something powerful going on, and I’m excited to be a part of it.

For this issue, we stretched our design wings to explore a new view of ICONIC architecture by digging into the roots of Mid-Century Modern architecture in many of the extraordinary homes we feature. We hit the road for Palm Springs, the mecca for ICONIC architects like Richard Neutra, Albert Frey, E. Stewart Williams and William Krisel.

This progressive view from long ago is a celebration of exciting design innovations and the foundations for much of what we love today.

With Palm Springs about midway between our two markets Scottsdale and Orange County, it’s the perfect place to tell the story of design that resonates with all of us just in time for Modernism Week in Palm Springs mid-February.

We’ll share some of our favorite new spots from the ICONIC Marrakesh neighborhood to the idyllic Palm Springs home where they filmed Don’t Worry Darling.

Wishing you a fantastic year ahead and hope you enjoy some new views along the way.

With Gratitude,

Renee M. Dee

Ricardo Basta is at the forefront of luxury and opulence in the world of jewelry. With more than 44 Jewelry Design Awards and industry accolades, Ricardo Basta pioneers the luxurious jewelry scene by creating breathtaking pieces that are a testament to quality, craftsmanship and elegance.

At Ricardo Basta, jewelry runs in the family. As a third-generation jeweler, Basta combines modern techniques with old-world techniques–learned from his apprenticeships in Europe– to craft each piece with the “Basta touch.” The result? A timeless work of art to take pride in owning.

“I apprenticed the old fashioned way by literally learning from the ‘floor up’,” Basta says. “I began working for my uncle, a very well European trained jeweler from an early age, and he had me sweeping the shop floors!... When I began working on vintage styles of jewelry and how the pieces were created, I began to understand jewelry. It humbled me to work on period pieces properly, I deconstructed my tools of today and focused on the old-world techniques to get the right results so pieces remained untouched even with extensive repairs. This opened a whole new world of creativity in designing for me, it is a style that inspires me: romantic, organic fluidity.”

With the flagship store in Los Angeles, you can browse the stunning collections that Basta has created. If you are

looking for something more personal, the sky’s the limit at Ricardo Basta, as custom jewelry is an available service so you can turn a dream into reality.

“Today, in the world, jewelry is advancing by leaps and bounds compared to my humble beginnings,” Basta explains. “My foremost desire is to fulfill my artistic passion and be true to my vision while diving into new arenas of possible movement within the pieces and how to execute that! I like pushing the creative envelope always!”

What sets Basta’s work apart from other jewelers is his commitment to innovation by bringing his pieces to life through animation.

“I like to add moving parts or something that articulates to some degree, even if it’s a minor movement. Like a Panda Brooch I made, the Panda has a carved Jade leaf in its’ mouth that moves when you walk; or I have ring conversions that are a ring cloaked within another ring, which gives you two looks in one, I have also created a ring that converts to a pendant by removing the top of the ring because why not! I feel this has become my signature,” Basta says.

Basta’s eclectic style paired with the excellence of knowledge and execution in his craft has molded the Ricardo Basta brand into a treasure trove of artwork that should be celebrated and adorned by all.

If you love the masters of architecture and ICONIC vintage design, make your way to Palm Springs for ten days in February for Modernism Week.

We love all things ICONIC, and in Palm Springs every February, Modernism Week allows the world to see a profound collection of well-preserved, Mid-Century Modern architecture and classic, vintage furniture pieces. For those who celebrate the modernism era, this is the ideal time to get your vintage vibe on.

Launched in 2006, Modernism Week is the largest celebration of Mid-Century and modern architecture, design and culture. It started in Palm Springs as a collaborative, grass-roots community effort consisting of a few home tours, cocktail mixers and educational events planned to coincide with the Palm Springs Modernism Show (originally called Palm Springs Modernism Show & Sale) occurring in Palm Springs, California each February since 2000.

Attendees participate in tours, talks and compelling programs that educate people about the role that design plays in our daily lives. Palm Springs is known for having the largest and most well-preserved Mid-Century Modern architecture in the world. That’s what attracts people from around the world to understand the culture and lifestyle that surrounds it.

Bob Bogard, marketing support for Modernism Week through O’Bayley Communications, says last year’s 11-day festival had an estimated audience of more than 100,000 attendees who participated in more than 350 events. “We expect to surpass that number this year,” he says. The 19th annual Modernism Week 2024 is from February 15 to 25, 2024.

“Our festival in 2024 will feature tours of exciting and historic homes that will be showcased for the first time, talks by some of the top experts in their fields, intricately themed parties, and other opportunities for our guests to revive the MidCentury Modern lifestyle and culture. I am personally excited about the two featured homes we are offering this year - The Shag House and Wexler ’54,” says Bogard.

If you plan to attend, we’ll see you there!

Reimagining a Newport Beach 1970s dwelling into a modern dream home turned into a passion project for the homeowner, architect and interior designer.

50 ICONICLIFE.COM

Situated in Newport Beach, where the sun-kissed shores meet the lulled “swoosh” of the Pacific Ocean, a unique and ICONIC cadence of life unfolds. Among the lavish coastal scenes and gentle dance of palm trees, is a home that pays tribute to the grandeur that characterizes this well-sought-after beach town.

Within this scenic panorama, a story of architectural mastery, ageless sophistication and refined living emerges, spotlighting a Newport Beach residence designed by visionary architect Brion Jeannette, president of Brion Jeannette Architecture.

A SYMPHONY OF DESIGN MASTERY

The Newport Beach architecture firm has stood as a pioneering force in energy-efficient

design since its inception in 1974, and it’s no surprise that this client trusted its team with creating the home of their dreams. Jeannette’s architectural prowess reveals itself in the meticulous design that fuses aesthetics, technology and environmental consciousness. The goal? To breathe new life into a 1970s single-story dwelling, and create an exquisite balance between nostalgia and modern elegance.

CLIENT COLLABORATION: A HARMONIOUS PAS DE DEUX

The collaboration between architect and client unfolds as a graceful waltz, with the homeowner involved in every aspect of the remodel. Jeannette commends the owner’s dedication through every step of the project, including showing up on-site daily and

selecting materials alongside Jeannette and interior designer Sandra Villa.

“He did it right,” Jeannette says of his client. “The owner had lived many years in this home and was ready and eager to reinvigorate it.”

A serene front-yard Zen garden enhanced by ancient magnolia trees that provide filtered shade and a large lawn welcomes visitors to the renovated residence. “The grassy area adds to the sense of spaciousness and, when desired, allows for large group entertaining and lawn games,” Jeannette says. “This is truly a multi-use space that is low maintenance and always inviting, any time of day. You can see through the house to the ocean view while sitting on this intimate patio.”

Meanwhile, the back of the house offers a breathtaking panorama of Newport’s coast and captivating sunsets that disappear behind Catalina Island. “The home is a seamless blending of the inside to the outside with a simple turn of the head,” the architect notes. Opening front and rear doors invites refreshing ocean breezes in summer, while dual-glazed doors and windows shield against the Southern California winter chill.

The house integrates indoor and outdoor spaces through the opening floor-to-ceiling windows, especially at the entertainment bar, with a circular design that one would typically see in an outdoor setting and countertops that reflect the blue waters of the ocean. The bar is a statement piece that brings outdoor features into the hub of the home. Jeannette calls it the home’s central core.

“This bar turned out to be so welcoming and comfortable it has become the go-to spot for breakfast, lunch and dinner, a work from home office and a delightful spot to catch up on the day,” Jeannette says. “Not to mention ideal for entertaining friends. The stone top surface is an exotic onyx with underlights that add a dimension of complete serenity.”

SANDRA VILA’S ARTISTRY: CRAFTING INTERIOR ELEGANCE

Vila, the orchestrator behind the interiors, collaborated with the architect and the client

53 ICONICLIFE.COM

to shape the home’s interiors. Jeannette’s architectural elements, including raised ceilings and a horseshoe-shaped bar, inspired Vila’s design. In addition, the client’s vision of a comfortable modern home with ocean views guided her aesthetic choices, focusing on curvilinear furnishings and cultural influences from South America.

“Functionality and personalization were vital aspects in this design,” Vila recalls. “Rather than designing for the approval of others or with resale in mind, we tapped into our client’s desires to create a space that truly encapsulates who he is and tells his story. That said, designing the home to include his expensive collection of Mezcal and wine was crucial. The mélange elegantly flanks the long capsule-shaped dining table, making it easily accessible during dinner.”

Vila also came up with the idea of a mirrored wall on the great room’s east wall, reflecting the coast and Newport Bay view. “Sandra and I worked together with the owner and, after multiple mock-ups, created the sculptured mirrored wall with recessed lighting that is beautiful on its own and enhances and supports the indoor-outdoor visual concept from anywhere you stand or sit within the great room,” Jeannette says.

Sustainability, too, played a significant role in Vila’s design. “Our client sought to utilize his collection of artwork along with key furniture pieces such as the ebony wood console table and sculpture that graces the entry,” Vila remarks. ”To update the kitchen, the existing cabinets were refinished and the appliances re-purposed, which minimized unnecessary material usage.”

BEYOND ARCHITECTURE

The collaborative efforts of Jeannette, Vila and the homeowner resulted in more than a home; it’s a magical work of art with a lifetime of memories attached to it. “It was so much fun,” Jeannette reminisces. “One of us would say, ‘How about this or that?’ And each of us offered our special skills to exercise an idea and bring it to reality. The owner allowed us to reimagine the house in ways he had not considered or anticipated. The result is a total joy for the owner and the team that brought ideas to life.”

MASTERPIECE

This nature-centric home in Laguna Beach is truly one to be remembered for architect Horst Noppenberger.

Photography by Brett Hillyard

58 ICONICLIFE.COM

ARCHITECT Horst Noppenberger, BUILDER Corbin Reeves Construction, INTERIOR DESIGN Horst Architects, PHOTOGRAPHY Brett Hillyard, LANDSCAPE DESIGN Horst Architects

Situated atop the hill of Mar Vista Avenue is a contemporary home that soaks in the sapphire waters of the Laguna Beach coast. The sliding floor-toceiling glass doors that line the back of the house welcome the ocean vistas by presenting a panoramic view of the terrain below. The medley of stucco, steel and exposed concrete work harmoniously to create a modern home with accents of mahogany planks adding a rustic component, all beautifully combined to form a Mid-Century Modern silhouette.

The 3,000-square-foot four-bedroom, four-bathroom home was crafted by Horst Noppenberger, founder of Horst Architects and built by Corbin Reeves Construction. It took close to eight years to complete due to the high level of community involvement and the historic location. The luxury Laguna Beach residence, which overlooks beach cottages built in the 1940s and 50s, holds a special place in the architect’s heart, as he used to reside in the same neighborhood. To preserve the feel of the locale, Noppenberger worked not only in accordance with the city but with the community and former neighbors, as well.

“When we build something in Laguna Beach, we have to go through a very arduous review process. We have to meet with the neighbors and share our plans with them and find ways of addressing any concerns they have,” Noppenberger explains. “Almost

all of the houses on the hill below the site are tiny beach cottages. We had a lot of people concerned that our project was scaled inappropriately with the scale of the neighborhood. We did make a lot of concessions along the way. It was one of those projects where we were in design review for about four years, going back and forth between design review meetings and getting approval from the city council and the neighbors.”

The exterior shape of the house creates a linear eye pathway that enhances the natural terrain of the land, with the steel roof creating a gradual “stair-like pattern” that mimics the natural typography of the hill it’s built on. This approach of leading the eye in a desired direction is utilized throughout the home. For instance, white floating stepstones ascending over a bed of smooth rocks lead to the grand mahogany custom pivot door that opens to the grand foyer.

59 ICONICLIFE.COM
60 ICONICLIFE.COM

“I always want entries to have a strong sense of arrival,” Noppenberger says. “The entry has a strong concrete wall that projects horizontally to the street. That concrete wall creates a gesture of invitation; it brings you into the house, just as the dining table is used as a linear device that draws your eye to the ocean.”

Integration of nature is a key aspect of the home’s design. Creating the indoor-outdoor connection was a goal of Noppenberger’s. He accomplished this by using the same materials for the interior and exterior. White marble countertops and a backsplash in the kitchen are continued to the outdoor grilling area, while light-gray concrete exterior and interior walls create a sense of continuity.

The interiors are dominated by a lighter color palette featuring whites, neutrals and light grays, promoting an open, bright setting. Oak floors complement white and exposed concrete walls while contrasting with the darker finishes of the kitchen cabinetry and black window framing. The main

61 ICONICLIFE.COM

level consists of the grand foyer, a kitchen that opens onto a terrace, two secondary bedrooms and an office.

Horst Architects also handled the interior furnishings. Pieces evocative of the ocean can be found in various parts of the home. A sandy white sectional and blue velvet throw pillows reflect the hues of the nearby beach, once again drawing the scenery from the natural world inside. Other elements, such as white marble kitchen and bathroom countertops, were chosen based on the patterns in the stone, which resemble the texture of sea foam.

The primary bedroom seems as if it is hidden in plain sight, just above the living room, the main bedroom is accessed by the floating oak staircase. This serene space is designed with a color palette that exudes a sense of quietness and relaxation. The ivory duvet and linen throw pillows bring calmness into the room. And because the windows are not floor-toceiling, there is an element of intimacy.

“Sometimes we need the house to feel expansive and open to the outside, bringing in our family and friends, but other times we retreat into an intimate, contemplative and meditative space,” Noppenberger says. “I tried to create this house to reflect that duality and spirit.”

Gregory Hawkins, Corbin Reeves’ project manager for the property, summarizes the home in a few short words: “It’s truly one of a kind.”

RETRO

IN PALM SPRINGS, is de RIGUEUR

This desert resort city continues to be defined by its period architecture and design.

Retro might be considered a design fad, but in Palm Springs, retro is simply fait accompli. Since its 1950s and ’60s heyday as a hangout for Hollywood’s elite, the desert resort city has served as ground zero for period-defining architecture, interior and landscape design and fashion trends.

From the psychedelic prints and patterns imagined by clothing designer Trina Turk, who selected the town as home for her flagship boutique, to the swell hotels and inns that edge the palm tree-lined streets and boulevards, Palm Springs has never found a reason to alter its kitschy vibe.

Find your retro inspiration with a stay at one of these ICONIC Palm Springs hotels:

64 ICONICLIFE.COM

DEL MARCOS HOTEL

Palm Springs was shaped by a few pioneers, including William. F. Cody who ventured to the region in 1945 and ultimately achieved architectural fame. Del Marcos Hotel was Cody’s first independent commission, launching his career in the desert. Built in 1947, the 17-room property won multiple architectural awards, and in 2012, it was deemed a historic site. The hotel retains the spirit of the 1950s and ’60s with retro furnishings, decor and classic Mid-Century Modern architecture. Each room is named after famous artists like Donald Wexler, Nat Reed, Julius Shulman, and Shag.

THE PARKER PALM SPRINGS

Long ago, the private residence of singer/actor Gene Autry and, later, media mogul Merv Griffin, The Parker Palm Springs continues to reign as the desert’s coolest address. Once the stomping ground of Frank Sinatra and Rat Pack, the lush estate is now owned by hotelier Jack Parker. It is known for its throwback glamor and whimsical, exuberant style, courtesy of designer Jonathan Adler. Adler was given free rein to develop the hotel’s signature aesthetic—kitschy and colorful details, accented with vibrant glass sculptures, circular hanging fireplaces and original art. The swinging mid-century vibe includes red lacquer front doors, lowslung vintage furniture, hammocks, Moroccan textiles, and shuttered sliding glass doors.

The Parker is where A-list celebrities and film directors stay during Palm Springs’ annual film festival.

L’HORIZON RESORT & SPA

Another William Cody gem, this ICONIC Mid-Century Modern boutique hotel has long been a celebrated hotspot attracting stars from Hollywood’s Golden Age, including Betty Grable and Marilyn Monroe. Built in 1952, L’Horizon Resort & Spa has since been reimagined by acclaimed designer Steve Hermann as a sleek and sultry destination that continues to attract Hollywood A-listers. The intimate, adults-only hotel features 25 luxurious bungalows (think Frette linens and Le Labo bath amenities) spread over 3 acres. Each has a private patio, outdoor shower, and classic, mid-century design featuring bold textiles. Add a luxuriant pool and classic desert and mountain views, and L’Horizon is one of the region’s most elegant hospitality options.

CASA CODY

This boutique inn holds the distinction of being the oldest operating hotel in Palm Springs. Founded in the Roaring ’20s by Harriet Cody (no relation to aforementioned William) in the Spanish Colonial Revival style, Casa Cody was yet another hotspot for stage and screen stars during Hollywood’s heyday. Today, the hotel offers a variety of room styles—from studios to standalone casitas—each honoring the hotel’s adobe hacienda heritage while showcasing the best of Mid-Century Modernism. Its 1.5 bucolic acres—filled with bougainvillea and native fruit trees—at the foot of the San Jacinto Mountains feature two swimming pools and expansive lawns.

THE THREE FIFTY HOTEL

Originally built in 1950, The Three Fifty Hotel combines its mid-century roots with a chic minimalist aesthetic. The 10-room boutique hotel property was designed by famed architect Herbert W. Burns and in 2017, was fully renovated by interior designer Laura Slipak. Offering guests the quintessential Palm Springs getaway with a heated pool, spa offerings, and spacious rooms (some with kitchenettes), the hotel features impressive views of the San Jacinto Mountains.

DESERT RIVIERA HOTEL

This Mid-Century Modern, boutique hotel with San Jacinto Mountain views looks much as it did when it opened in 1951. Designed and built by Herbert W. Burns, one of the desert’s first modernists, Desert Riviera Hotel features a Mad Men vibe thanks to its period furnishings and original wall clocks. Rooms encircle the heated pool, and an outdoor gas BBQ grill and conversation fire pit encourages communal gatherings under the soft illumination of tree-dangling lights.

SANDS HOTEL & SPA

This 1950s-era hotel recently received a refresh by famed designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard, who revived the property with a vibrant mix of his signature Moroccan-inspired style and mid-century influences. Nods to the Rat Pack era are found throughout the Sands Hotel & Spa, with hints of glamor, luxury and decadence reimagined for a new generation. Rooms are beautifully appointed with Acqua di Parma bath essentials, Revival New York bed linens, signature Sonifi entertainment systems and full-size in-room mini bars with topline bar and stemware. Many feature lush, palm tree-lined views of the property and its private patios.

Aloha OAHU

Hawaii’s most populous and captivating state—these are a few of our favorite things about Oahu.

73 ICONICLIFE.COM
Photo courtesy of Turtle Bay Resort

As a frequent, longtime visitor to Hawaii, I’ve enjoyed the hospitality of nearly every island. Yet it has been years since I explored Oahu. Preferring the low-key vibe of Maui, the verdancy of Kauai, and the isolation of Lana’i, I eschewed the state’s capital home, thinking it was too frenetic and developed. But a recent visit proved that this megalopolitan isle and refreshing mai tais do indeed mix, and the effect is mesmerizing. With the guidance of a few in-the-know locals, I traversed Waikiki’s south and north shores to uncover Oahu’s best. Here are the findings:

WHERE TO STAY

Mention Halekulani Hotel to anyone who has ever stayed at the Waikiki mainstay, and the response is that of unadulterated affection, proving that Halekulani is more than an Oahu resort—it’s a sentiment. Established more than 100 years ago as one of the first hospitality ventures

on Oahu, Halekulani and its prime Waikiki location allows for unobstructed views of the Pacific and Diamondhead (Hawaii’s famous volcanic cone). Nearly every elegantly appointed guest room and suite features ocean-facing lanais poised towards the sea and overlooking the stunning swimming pool.

And when Halekulani is at full capacity, the neighboring resort, Halepuna Waikiki by Halekulani, is the next best thing. Located directly across the street, the award-winning Halepuna features a rooftop pool with reservable cabanas that afford stunning ocean vistas.

Newer to the Oahu hospitality scene is The Ritz-Carlton, Waikiki Beach. Its two stunning, modern towers with rooms and suites offer clear ocean views and the vivacity of Hawaii’s OG beach town. Unique is The Ritz-Carlton’s residential aspect—every room and suite features a full kitchen and washer/dryer—making it an ideal retreat for

families or larger groups. Luxury-focused and progressive, the resort features several sustainability-focused initiatives, such as under-sink water purification systems and the gift of aluminum water bottles.

On Oahu’s wild and windswept other side—the North Shore—Turtle Bay Resort encompasses 1,300 acres of prime oceanfront turf, which it stewards and preserves with utmost care. Turtle Bay guests are invited to explore the organic acreage via foot, horseback, surfboard, or bicycle (grab a complimentary cruiser from the resort’s fleet)—12 miles of trail leading to stunning vistas along secluded beachfront bays.

All of this adventure comes with a touch of luxury. Beautifully appointed rooms and suites are situated to take full advantage of sunrise or sunset views. Two large swimming pools offer ample chaise seating. Additional lounging options are found along the shore of Kuilima Cove, where gentle waves invite snorkeling and body surfing. For privacy, pack towels and sunscreen and walk the trail to secluded Kawela Bay.

WHERE TO SHOP

Waikiki’s Kalakaua Avenue offers luxury shopping at its best. Along the picturesque palm tree-lined street, Luxury Row features all the biggest names in designer goods: Chanel, Dior, Prada, YSL, Bottega Veneta, and more. Most items are 10 percent off typical retail, and Hawaii’s 4-percent sales tax rate makes for an extra bargain.

In Hawaii, aloha shirts are de rigueur fashion for men. Find your perfect print at Avanti. Favored by Bruno Mars, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and other stars, Avanti aloha shirts, with designs from the 1930s, ’40s, and ’50s, feature Hawaiian scenes, flowers, and points of interest in original patterns, prints, and bright tropical colors and styles.

No other brand has defined the world of women’s surfing like Roxy, the hip purveyor of swim and surf wear. Shop for casual beach basics at two boutiques along Kalakaua

Avenue, where you’ll find inspiration in the colorful murals and promotional photos celebrating world champion longboard surfer and Oahu local Kelia “Sis” Moniz and her pals.

On the North Shore, the small town of Haleiwa features a main street lined with t-shirt and household goods boutiques. Malibu Shirts carries quality tees with vintage images, such as the Primo beer logo, Hawaii’s ICONIC beer brand.

WHAT TO DO

Waikiki is nearly synonymous with surfing, so “when in Rome,” follow suit with a lesson from Moniz Family Surf. This renowned Hawaiian family of surf champions provides the best in surf instruction. Teaching on the same beach where they first learned, the Moniz siblings (father and mother, too!) will have you hanging ten in no time.

Allow yourself to be willingly humiliated while laughing ’til you cry at a Caricature Party. Stationed each evening in front of SKY Waikiki seafood restaurant, a pair of artists captures eager patrons in silly portraits that emphasize unflattering characteristics. Become a participatory victim, or simply watch the fun.

Adrenaline seekers will find a happy home at Uproar Fitness, where world champion big-wave surfer Billy Kemper and his wife, Tahiti Hernandez-Kemper, lead uplifting, up-tempo workouts and aerobics classes that inspire you to become your best self. Join them on the North Shore for challenging sessions that combine strength training, mindfulness and fun, as hinted by the shimmering disco ball that hangs from the fitness studio ceiling.

WHERE AND WHAT TO EAT AND DRINK

In Honolulu’s Ward Village, Istanbul Hawaii is one of the state’s only Turkish & Mediterranean restaurants. Combining traditional flavor and heritage, Chef Ahu Hettema and her mother, Chef Nili Yildirim, both Turkish natives, provide appreciative diners with flavorful dishes made with local and imported ingredients. The “Shish” (kabobs) are a crowd favorite: ribeye, lamb or chicken served with Mediterranean salad, saffron rice and tzatziki (a yogurt-based Greek sauce). Don’t miss the creatively crafted cocktails, which alone are worth a visit. Try the Evil Eye with Angel’s Envy bourbon, cardamom, Turkish date and orange blossom.

Kaimana Beach Hotel’s Hau Tree restaurant is ideally situated to capture the best sunset views. Enjoy the dusky show under a leafy, twinkle-lit canopy while enjoying a glass of bubbly. The food could easily be an afterthought when the vista is this special, but the dinner dishes are

It goes without saying that along the Pacific, any seafood fare promises to be outstanding.

creative and delicious. Pupu standouts include an impressive crudité tray, burrata toast, and Chip and Rainbow Caviar. The handmade pasta is a draw, as are the fresh salads and the grilled lamb chops.

Located within Halepuna’s gracious lobby is UMI by Vikram Garg, the creation of the Indian-born, Frenchtrained, and Japanese-inspired global restaurateur and chef innovator. Inspired by the ocean’s harvest, Garg has created a captivating, seafood-centric menu, yet the foie gras gyoza and the prime ribeye belong on anyone’s “best tastes ever” list. The private collection of caviar and the selected wine pairings that perfectly enhance every dish are not to be missed.

You’ll find what I think is the best mai tai on the island at Halekulani’s Earl’s at House Without A Key, the new pool-adjacent bar where lead mixologist Tuda Grehan has perfected the traditional Hawaiian cocktail.

On the North Shore, Turtle Bay Resort’s Alaia restaurant features locally sourced items from the resort’s own 468-acre Kuilima Farm. Here, a simple Little Gem lettuce salad illustrates how wonderful just-picked goodness can be. It goes without saying that along the Pacific, any seafood fare promises to be outstanding, but at Alaia, Kona Kampachi Sashimi and Hawaiian Ahi Poke reach new levels of deliciousness. Start your meal with a crafted cocktail; the “Don’t Touch the Turtles” vodka-based tipple (named for the mantra aimed at over-enthusiastic snorkelers) is fittingly served in a gleaming copper turtle glass.

For something a bit more casual, Zippy’s can’t be beat. A Hawaiian institution founded in 1966, the beloved Zippy’s serves up soul-satisfying Hawaiian and American classics, from pancakes and omelets to chili and chicken dishes.

Don’t miss the salted caramel croissant at Halekulani Bakery. This sweet, sticky, flaky pastry is as Instagramworthy as it is delicious, and nearly every pastry you can imagine is available within the exalted café. Of course, no visit to Hawaii is complete without shaved ice. This ICONIC dessert is exactly what it’s named—ice, shaved from a block, flavored with a choice of syrups and other sweet ingredients. Waiola Shave Ice is routinely voted as Hawaii’s best.

LOCATIONS

PAGE 98: Owned by Bob Bogard and Michael Von Wittenau, the Mod Vista home may look familiar; the property was featured in the psychological thriller, “Don’t Worry Darling” starring Florence Pugh and Harry Styles. The Canyon View Estates community reflects a utopian lifestyle with most units having the same floor plan as their neighbors. Designed by William Kirisel and built by Roy Fey in 1962, the 180-home-community serves as home to many residents both part-time and full-time.

PAGE 104-105: This home was designed by the renowned architect William Krisel. Krisel is a prominent architect famous for his sleek lines and Mid-Century Modern designs. Krisel’s work is celebrated throughout Palm Springs. Dubbed the Ray Bradbury home due to the famous author’s previous ownership of the house, you can find Bradbury’s novels displayed throughout the interior as well as nostalgic decor that reflects classic Palm Springs Mid-Century Modernism. The Ray Bradbury house has also been photographed by Julius Shulman, most known for his photography of the Case Study homes in the 60s.

PAGE 106: The famous Marrakesh community—the location of these images—is a staple in Palm Desert. Pink homes lining the streets with mountain backgrounds is truly ICONIC. Marrakesh started when club developer Johnny Dawson had a vision for an unexampled community. Inspired by the pink hues of the Moroccan sunset, Dawson gathered a team of expert architects to create the beautiful and esteemed community that Marrakesh is today. As the residents often say, “It’s hard to have a bad day in a pink house.”

Fever!

The lure of retro themes and Mid-Century Modern architecture beckons those with a love for design. Meet three top designers who have made Palm Springs their home.

Palm Springs boasts the most significant collection of Mid-Century Modern homes and notable vintage neighborhoods. Some of the most famous architects have left their mark on the desert community, including William Cody, Richard Neutra and Albert Frey.

A playground for politicians, presidents and entertainers, Palm Springs became Hollywood in the desert, given its proximity to Los Angeles. Actors could escape to this nearby enclave for social events and still be within the two-hour rule of most studios when working.

Combine celebrity ties with design, and Palm Springs is a place full of stories and excitement. It’s no wonder designers and architects alike find this destination ripe for renovation. In this case, reimagining each property while staying true to the form and function is what makes this small city great and worthy of celebration each year during Modernism Week, which celebrates Mid-Century Modern design and the fashion and culture surrounding it.

Anne Michaelsen Yahn

Known for her deep understanding of defining the dynamic edge between classic and modern, Anne Michaelsen Yahn has transformed her ICONIC estate in the Marrakesh community into a contemporary oasis. With more than three decades of success, Michaelsen Yahn is an expert in her field. As a member of ASID and The Orange County Design Alliance, Michaelsen Yahn has garnered countless accolades and awards for design.

Woolf. Elgin’s specific vision and appreciation for beauty were the driving forces that created this ICONIC community.

Originally, Michaelsen Yahn had no interest in residing in Palm Springs until she was introduced to the rosy allure of the Marrakesh community. “A friend introduced me to the Marrakesh Country Club neighborhood. Immediately, I fell in love with the preserved Hollywood Regency architecture, the massive rooms, the grandeur of the views, and everything the neighborhood and community had to offer,” she says.

The Marrakesh community was the last project of renowned Hollywood Regency architect John Elgin

Michaelsen Yahn utilized her design knowledge to create a unique home without compromising its history. The name of the home Michaelsen Yahn designed is “La Maisonnette” which translates to little house and perfectly encapsulates the space she created—not grand in size but in elegance.

“I love my home! Being able to draw from the past, honor the legacy of the original architecture and bring it to modern conveniences was a dream come true,” Michaelsen Yahn remarks. “Paying homage to the home’s elegance, high ceilings and glamorous Hollywood lifestyle is what I’m always looking for. Opportunities like this - staying true to a home’s roots while modernizing- perfectly encapsulate my motto of ‘Contemporary Living, Classically Inspired.”

Barclay Butera

Celebrated interior designer and author of six books, Barclay Butera is a pioneer in the design community. His approach to elegant, glamorous and chic interiors has landed him partnerships with some of the industry’s most respected brands.

With Butera’s busy, on-the-go lifestyle, the tranquility and unique aesthetic of Palm Springs gives Butera a healthy balance of work and relaxation. Not only does Palm Springs offer a relaxing getaway, but the ties to original Hollywood superstars are one thing that resonates with Butera.

“I think the thing that draws me to Palm Springs the most is the history and ties to the golden age of Hollywood,” Butera says. “The legendary stories of Bob Hope, Dinah Shore, and, of course, Frank Sinatra are still very much alive. I try to frequent the celebrated restaurants that were the haunts of these notables from decades ago. The extraordinary thing about Palm Springs is that you can

find tranquility and relax or go out in the town; it is the best of both worlds. Plus, I have recently gotten into golf, and there’s nothing better than hitting the courses in sunny Palm Springs with friends and family.”

Butera’s beautiful Spanish home sits on a half-acre lot and projects brightness and light while maintaining the elegance and glamor often found in his work.

“Spanish architecture tends to be dark and moody. I wanted a bright, happy home and we achieved that.,” Butera explains. “I did add new flooring, comfortable new furnishings and gorgeous artwork. Outside, we added magnificent tile touches, and we also added fantastic new lighting inside and out! The home glows; it’s so welcoming and inviting. I love pulling in the driveway and enjoying my perfect little enclave in the heart of Palm Springs.”

Michael Berman

Michael Berman is a renowned interior, product and furniture designer, completing high-end projects from coast to coast. Berman’s work reflects his interest in history, art, architecture and nature.

“I’ve always been a somewhat eclectic interior designer,” Berman says. “I’ve loved different eras and styles such as the streamlined modernism from the 1930s, art deco furnishings from the 1940s, atomic age furnishings from the 1950s and Mid-Century Modern furnishings from the 1960s into the late 70s and early 80s. I love putting things together, and I think an interior that speaks to the owners’ personalities is always more interesting than a formulaic type of interior.”

With the aesthetic of Palm Springs similar to Berman’s style preferences, it’s no surprise that Berman gravitated to the desert city’s relaxing lifestyle and striking architecture. Palm Springs not only offered Berman a quick getaway from the hustle and bustle of the surrounding metropolitan cities but also inspired him for his work.

“I started coming out to the Desert area in the mid-80s; it was wonderful,” Berman explains. “There is a certain

amount of glamor and ease of living lifestyle associated with Palm Springs from the 1960s and early 70s that is alive. So we came out one weekend, bought a house and started living life. I’ve always been one to look back for inspiration, so anything vintage and retro was very inspiring to me, especially for my Interior Design Projects and my furniture company.”

Berman’s home in Palm Springs reflects his eclectic style and life experiences. Pieces symbolic of his and his life-partner, David Rubin’s journeys are showcased throughout the home.

“We are interested in mixing antiques with soft modern furnishings such as Asian, British Colonial and Danish pieces with simple silhouettes,” Berman says. “The juxtaposition of texture and sheen is always a gorgeous combination that pairs well with our eclectic mix of art, including African masks from our trip to Tanzania, bronze Buddha from our visit to India and our vintage and modern photography and paintings.”

Pray for NOW

Team Vail or Aspen? Whichever destination you fancy, here are the best-of-the-best recommendations for each vacation spot.

Think of the glamorous town of Aspen as the Yankees vs. the fun-loving Vail, the Red Sox, or the Rolling Stones (Aspen) vs. the sing-along Beatles (Vail); whichever side of the fence you may fall on, know that you will most likely be cherishing every moment in either locale.

This alpine sibling rivalry between the older Aspen (born 1946 when lift tickets cost $3.75) and the younger Vail (born 1962 with a $5 lift ticket) has been in effect since the two saw each other taking turns on the Rocky Mountain slopes. With annual visitors of 1.4 million in Aspen and 1.3 million in Vail, the demand for skiing in these locations is at an all-time high.

Concurrently, with annual skiing revenue in Colorado at $4.8 billion, there has never been such an enormous diamond-shaped snowflake floating in the air.

Fortunately, we are the beneficiaries of this debate. The dedication to offer the snow-devout best experiences possible is top of mind at both locations. Whether it’s powder day skiing, endless runways to display your best self to the well-booted set, or world-class cuisine (both towns have Michelin-star restaurants), these two arenas have you covered.

VAIL

In 1962, famed Colorado 10th Mountain Division veteran Pete Seibert had an idea. How do you create a world-class ski resort on the patch of Forest Service land now known as Vail? (The town was named after Charlie Vail, the highway engineer of I-70 in the 1940s.) Fast forward 61 years and Seibert’s dream-come-true is now considered “steezy” (effortlessly stylish).

This modern mix of style and ease is encapsulated in the quaint assortment of quality restaurants, whimsical galleries and designer boutiques in this mountain paradise. You can find your Warren Miller moments skiing the famed Back Bowls or get your turns on any of the 195 runs available.

If you want to “feel the burn,” go for the 4-mile Riva Ridge. Whatever your fancy, this famed ski destination has something for everyone to ski, board or gawk.

Shopping Gorsuch

Gorsuch opened as a gas station in 1966. What started as a hub for fuel blossomed into the flagship store for fashionable ski apparel, gifts and ski rentals. The Gorsuch family has outfitted and decorated the Vail Valley for decades with its fashion and knickknacks. Mrs. Gorsuch still helms the store five days a week.

Res Ipsa

This shop sells upcycled vintage denim, needlepoint loafers and custom totes embroidered with “Noblesse Oblige” for the grocery run.

Dining

Sweet Basil

Sweet Basil is the newly recognized Michelin-star restaurant in Colorado and is the go-to for its delectable cuisine. The Miso Ramen bowl makes you forget your fatigue from the slopes and will get you feeling warm, relaxed and replenished.

Spa

Gravity Haus

The state-of-the-art spa located in Gravity Haus in Vail is a new addition to the town with a salt room for elevation acclimation and a cold plunge pool to revive those mogul-bruised knees.

Lodging

The Sebastian

This lodge could make you a believer in the power of place. Situated away from the commotion of the gondola, you can relax and indulge in any of the three on-property restaurants. There also is a cozy library lounge in which to enjoy some downtime. And, most importantly, there are three outdoor soaking tubs with a view of tomorrow’s best corduroy as your backdrop.

Gallery

Gib Singleton

Gib Singleton’s gallery has an incredibly evocative David Yarrow photography exhibit that features everything from the maw of an Alaskan Grizzly to Gerard Butler and Cara Delevingne cutting cards in a Leadville saloon.

ASPEN

It was the dream of silver that turned Aspen into a golden reality. In 1870, the first miners scoured the land in search of fortune, but little did they know that the real cache was above ground. So, in 1940, the ambitious trio of dreamers—Walter Paepcke, Friedl Pfeifer and Herbert Bayer—created Aspen, turning the mining town into an international destination for the global elite.

For skiing, Aspen Mountain is divided into the main mountain Ajax (accessible to all levels of skiers), Aspen Highlands (expert terrain) and Buttermilk (kiddo’s playground). For the powder-hungry, make the trek to Snowmass just down the road for an additional 94 bliss-filled runs.

Shopping

Pitkin County Dry Goods

This store was opened in 1969 by Don Fleisher to bring contemporary clothing to the quaint town. It has been in the family for more than 50 years, and you can now adorn yourself in A.P.C. and Dries Van Noten.

Dining

Bosq

Bosq is a newly minted Michelin-star restaurant. Chef Barclay Dodge never fails to impress with an evolving menu showcasing the valley’s quality ingredients with inventive takes (think Forest Broth).

Ajax Tavern

After attempting a new land speed record while bombing down Ajax, there is no better place to watch other skiers than at Ajax Tavern at the base of Aspen Mountain. Important note: truffle fries are mandatory.

This Scandinavian-inspired home can sleep eight, is dog friendly and might make you reconsider life’s priorities with its elegance and comfort. You will be the envy of many, as only the cognoscenti is aware of this gem.

Gallery

Aspen Art Museum

This world-class local museum is free and open to the public. The Aspen Art Museum showcases top-shelf exhibits such as the not-to-be-missed John Chamberlain retrospective “The Tighter They’re Wound; The Harder They Unravel.” You can debate and digress at the rooftop cafe, The Slippery Slope, no skis necessary.

Sit back and relax while you relish in Michael Bublé’s latest release; Fraser & Thompson, the first North American Whiskey.

The multi-platinum singer-songwriter Michael Bublé has taken a step down from the stage and entered the refined distillery realm. Enter Fraser & Thompson North American Whiskey, a smooth Canadian Whiskey and Kentucky Bourbon blend.

Bublé partnered with his longtime friend and award-winning master mixologist Paul Cirka—who first introduced him to the world of whiskey—together, they created a flavorful and unique blend featuring an array of harmonious flavors: hints of sweet fig, blood orange, subtle notes of caramel, vanilla and undertones of spice.

“Michael and I bonded over our shared passion for whiskey and wanted to create a blend that was flavorful but more light-hearted than the category at large can be known for,” says Fraser & Thompson co-founder and

Master Distiller and Blender Paul Cirka. “We stumbled upon creating something new for the category, a blended North American Whiskey.”

Bublé’s effortless approach to the Fraser & Thompson Whiskey campaign has allowed the spotlight to be on the quality of the spirit rather than the esteemed reputation of the singer-songwriter.

“When I heard Paul’s vision for creating a new kind of whiskey, I instantly knew what I wanted to call it,” Bublé says. “For the last three years, we worked together to perfect a whiskey blend that is equally elegant and approachable. We can’t wait to pour you a glass!”

So whether you’re a whiskey connoisseur looking for a new and exquisite flavor experience or a die-hard Bublé fan, the Fraser & Thomson Whiskey brand is sure to meet all your expectations and be a fantastic new addition to the competitive market of the whiskey spirit.

Christopher Columbus reached the island in 1493, which brought more than 400 years of Spanish rule. Spain eventually granted Puerto Rico the right to self-government in 1897. Just months later, however, the U.S. invaded the island during the 1898 Spanish-American War. Spain lost the war and ceded Puerto Rico to the U.S.

The political status of Puerto Rico is that of an unincorporated territory of the U.S. and is officially known as the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.

As a traveler, I love that the Puerto Rican people are so welcoming and infused with their own brand of pride, style and national identity. A trip to Puerto Rico is a grand, easy escape to a beautiful Caribbean island. It is a trendy destination for weddings and milestone birthday celebrations with friends and family. Notably, U.S. citizens do not need a passport to travel between the U.S. and Puerto Rico.

Old San Juan Dorado

SAMPLE ITINERARY

A “Best of the Best” recommended itinerary:

1. 3-5 nights in San Juan at Condado Vanderbilt Hotel or Fairmont El San Juan Hotel

2. 2-3 night in Old San Juan at Hotel El Convento or Palacio Provincial

3. 3-5 nights in Río Grande at St. Regis Bahia Beach Resort

4. 1-2 nights on Vieques Island at Malecon House, Casa de Amistad or Hacienda Tamarindo

5. 4-8 nights in Dorado at Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve

Most visitors fly into Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico (IATA code: SJU). Each hotel and destination listed works well as a stand-alone, quick visit to Puerto Rico. Each has beautiful accommodation options, including home and villa rentals. Travelers may choose to visit for a few nights or several weeks or months at a time. Charmed by all the beauty Puerto Rico offers, visitors often choose to return.

I am sharing several recommendations for a multi-destination journey to Puerto Rico spanning one to four weeks with a focus on luxury and adventure.

LIVE BORICUA

First, I recommend starting with “Live Boricua.” A Boricua is a person from Puerto Rico by birth or descent or a Puertorriqueño. Boricua has come to embody a vibrant spirit, flavor, pulse and rhythm that you will feel in Puerto Rico.

RICH WITH ACTIVITIES

Enjoy the sun, pools and beaches at or near your hotel. Puerto Rico (PR) has more than 300 beaches. Nearby restaurants, bars, cafes and clubs abound for every budget, style and lifestyle.

Exciting reasons to visit PR are the vast array of activity options: kayaking on a sparkling bioluminescent bay, enjoying a local rum tasting, hiking to see unique flora, fauna and waterfalls in the rainforest, experiencing diverse nightlife options, taking a helicopter tour, beach hopping around the coast, relaxing with a fresh cup of world-famous coffee at Hacienda Muñoz coffee plantation, tasting spectacular food, visiting historic lighthouses and viewing contemporary art in a museum that is its own architectural masterpiece, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico (MAC).

OLD SAN JUAN

Discover the wonderfully maintained, historic Old San Juan—a “must-see” UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its 74-block radius is rich with Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture from the 16th-19th centuries. Staying here for one to three nights at the lovely Hotel El Convento or Palacio Provincial is highly recommended so you can stroll and wander as you please. Alternatively, a quick visit aboard a cruise ship shore excursion is great, too.

EL YUNQUE NATIONAL FOREST

A highlight for me was a hiking exploration through the breathtaking El Yunque National Forest. This national gem is a perfect destination for those who want a total immersion into nature. It is the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System and the largest public land in Puerto Rico, encompassing more than 28,000 acres. The highest mountain peak in the forest rises 3,494 feet above sea level.

Ample rainfall creates a jungle-like atmosphere. The forest is brimming with trails surrounded by rich flora and fauna. Bring a bathing suit to swim in the streams and waterfalls.

BIO BAYS: MOSQUITO BAY, LAGUNA GRANDE AND LA PARGUERA

Another highlight is a nighttime visit to one or more of the three bioluminescent bays (bio bays) in Puerto Rico. These bio bays are Mosquito Bay, Laguna Grande and La Parguera. They contain a very high concentration of bioluminescent dinoflagellate plankton. When these plankton are moved in the water, pressure is put on their cell walls, which causes a cellular chemical reaction that emits light (bioluminescence). A visit is magical for explorers of all ages.

The optimal time to check out the bio bays is when the moon is not bright in the night sky, exposing you to the world’s most luminous marine light show. To visit Puerto Rico’s bio bays, you must have a permit, and it is best to go with an expert guide.

Mosquito Bay, on the island of Vieques, is the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world. Swimming is not

allowed. A one or two-night stay on Vieques is recommended to enjoy visits to Mosquito Bay and nearby beautiful beaches. You can arrive in Vieques from San Juan Via, a small commuter plane from SJU, SIG in San Juan, or RVR in Ceiba.

La Parguera bio bay is located at the southwestern tip of Puerto Rico. It takes about 2.5 hours to drive between San Juan and La Parguera. This is the only bio bay in Puerto Rico that allows tourists to swim among the glowing plankton. The visibility of the bioluminescence is best viewed while swimming in the water with a mask.

Laguna Grande bio bay is in Fajardo, about an hour’s drive east of San Juan. Visitors may kayak through the mangroves and see the bioluminescence in the bio bay. Nearby, located between the lush foothills of El Yunque National Forest and the crystal waters of the Atlantic Ocean, is Carabalí Rainforest Adventure Park, an action-packed adventure destination with fun ATV and horseback experiences.

DORADO BEACH, A RITZ-CARLTON RESERVE

Saving an exquisite destination for last, check in to the toprated resort, Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve. The property is a stunning world-class resort with a renowned five-acre spa sanctuary, fine cuisine, three pro golf courses and nature trails, all on a pristine beachfront.

In 1905, this land was first developed as a pineapple, grapefruit and coconut plantation. In 1958, the tycoon Laurance Rockefeller developed it as a RockResort hotel and nature preserve. Later, the property was transformed into Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, which opened in 2012. After severe damage from Hurricane Maria in September 2017, an extensive multi-million-dollar renovation took place a year later, and Dorado Beach reopened looking better than ever.

The entry-level rooms are big, starting at nearly 1,000 square feet. The villas and residences are even larger. All rooms, villas, residences and public spaces are designed thoughtfully with a focus on tranquility, natural light, natural materials, indoor/outdoor living and true barefoot beachfront and sea view luxury. A stay of at least four to eight nights is recommended. Before arriving here, explore the island of Puerto Rico because once you arrive at Dorado Beach, you will not want to leave.

It’s

a

Breeze

From regulating sunlight to adding a vintage vibe, the possibilities are endless for these ICONIC blocks.

Adesign element that brings not only style but also functionality to the table? Count us in. Breeze blocks (cinder blocks) have transcended time and place, evolving from their origins in the 1930s to become a modern decorative darling worldwide. Picture this: A breezy patio adorned with breeze blocks makes passersby do double takes, regulates sunlight and encourages airflow. It’s like nature’s air conditioning for your outdoor oasis.

Introduced to American design in the 1930s, these blocks quickly became the bee’s knees until the 1970s disco era when other style trends began to overshadow the breeze

block. While they are not load-bearing, they are still making waves today, especially in Palm Springs, where designers blend the best of the West Coast’s Mid-Century Modern and Mexican contemporary architecture into these ICONIC cement and concrete blocks.

The use of breeze blocks is making a big comeback as an architectural element for its ornamental look and vintage vibe, and they can be used in place of framing for support. So, the next time you’re sipping a latte on a breezy patio, take a moment to appreciate the not-so-hidden charm of breeze blocks— where form meets function in the most stylish way.
