Luxury Design for Longevity

Why luxury well-aging design is strategic and wise at 55.

The ultimate luxury is being safe and comfortable in a home you love. It isn’t exciting to think about aging, but if you want to stay in your home long into the future, it makes sense to think about beautiful design today that you will fully appreciate tomorrow.

As young as 55, our bodies are undergoing subtle changes, from vision and balance to mobility and overall

well-being, that gradually impact our daily lives. We have surgeries such as knee or hip replacements. And despite feeling like Superman or superwoman, we are at high risk of falling and sustaining a debilitating injury. Over 60% of falls happen at home, most of which are in the bathroom. Falls are physically, emotionally, and cognitively life-changing and they are costly in recovery time as well as financially. More importantly,

our homes are not built ready to prevent mishaps, let alone facilitate health recovery, safety, or accessibility, but they certainly can be.

According to a Harvard Housing Study, 99 percent of U.S. homes are not aging-inplace ready.

Regardless of size or price point, aging is not typically a forethought or priority in the architecture and design of homes when they are built. That’s why a lot of people end up in assisted living. Their homes are not able to accommodate their needs as they age.

Homes have never been considered a golden opportunity to boost longevity but they should be! It’s crucial to recognize that taking preventative measures in your living space is not just a necessity for people over 55, but a wise choice for everyone.

Bonnie J. Lewis Design creates luxury interiors incorporating special design elements that provide critical preventative measures and allow your home to accommodate unforeseen circumstances. The result? You boost your longevity and get a design that allows you to stay independent, living happier and longer in your home.

Nationally recognized for her expertise, Bonnie is one of just a handful of professional interior designers who are Certified Aging-in-Place Specialists (CAPS) in the country. She is also experienced in healthcare and senior living design. When you work with Bonnie, you are working with a degreed, award-winning designer who combines stunning aesthetics with safety and accessibility in a way that isn’t obvious or disruptive.

AS BEAUTIFUL AS IT IS SAFE AND ACCESSIBLE

Recently, Bonnie J. Lewis Design completed a project for a physician couple who bought their forever home in North

“OUR HOMES ARE NOT BUILT READY

Scottsdale. While they are still young at 55 and 65, they knew they wanted to plan for the future. It’s a smart investment for homeowners to do one remodel versus two, which is also better for the environment as it preemptively puts less in the landfill.

The primary bathroom involved designing a new ADA-compliant floor plan with abundant lighting, improved functionality, and accessibility while selecting appropriate finishes and ADA fixtures. Some of the standout design aesthetic elements include a custom 10-foot-high solid walnut, modern barn-style entry door, textured white wood-patterned tile plank flooring, a unique custom translucent blue window treatment, organic patterned wallpaper, 3-D wall tile, and custom cabinetry.

Bonnie always meticulously weighs the impact of every design decision and selection as she incorporates well-aging design, evidenced-based design, and Biophilic design to help clients proactively live safely and independently.

“Bonnie created and executed a breathtaking renovation that exceeds any spa bathroom I have ever seen anywhere in the world. She flawlessly incorporated accessibility features we did not think we would need for many years. I came to appreciate the larger shower, which could accommodate both my husband and me as I needed help with showering after I fell during a hike, breaking my wrist within months of the remodel.” Michelle Anderson, M.D.

The project has already earned top national and regional design excellence awards:

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT AGING?

I’ve never felt younger, well, except maybe when I was much younger than I am today. I believe it all has to do with how you perceive aging and how youthful you feel. I have a youthful mindset and an optimism for the future. I recently read that this mindset could be working for me.

In college, I remember hearing that actress Fran Drescher had been hypnotized to forget her age so that she would not associate with the number of her age. I never really understood how that worked because if you know the year you were born, you can do the math…anyhow, the concept intrigued me. From that moment forward, I understood that aging is a just number; it’s not a measurement of how vital, energetic and active life can be. I committed to aging as well as I could.

Research says that feeling younger and ignoring negative beliefs about aging can reduce anxiety and depression and boost overall well-being. The researchers were surprised by how much day-to-day mental health fluctuations are influenced by our thoughts about aging.

On days when participants felt younger than their actual age, they reported fewer depressive symptoms and higher levels of positive mood. And when they felt older, there were increased depressive symptoms and lower well-being, regardless of actual age. So you really can THINK yourself younger. We also know that optimism can enhance immune response as well.

We are again excited to share our ICONIC LIFE Longevity issue with you—it’s packed with tips, ideas and perspectives that can contribute to living longer and living better…just in time for the New Year.

Longevity could be considered one of life’s greatest luxuries, but in fact, it’s essential, and without it, we have nothing. Health is wealth, and that is made up of a lifetime of decisions, habits and a little help from Mother Nature.

In addition to the topics in this issue, here are three tiny tips that can make a difference:

• Never say you’re old or that you’re too old for something.

• Do things that spark joy and make you feel vibrant—learn a new skill, stay in motion or connect with others who are younger or who have a youthful mindset.

• Focus on making it happen every day. Celebrate small achievements that reinforce your sense of vitality and capability, no matter your age.

Every day is a new opportunity to rewrite the script and add meaning to your days, and I wish you a lifetime of health, happiness and success.

Happy New Year! With Gratitude, Renee M. Dee

HEALTH IS WEALTH

One of my goals for 2025 is to lead a healthier lifestyle, a goal I share with many people. The great thing about this is that so many resources, regimens and passionate people are available to help me achieve it. With every passing year, it seems more people are becoming conscious of their health and what they are putting into their bodies, and I’m right there with you.

This issue is about providing information and resources you may not have so you can make decisions about navigating your journey toward longevity more easily.

I am ready to kick-start this year with healthy choices. I am also participating in Dry January, a challenge to forgo drinking alcohol for the month to give my body a much-needed reset. I am hopeful about 2025 and can’t wait to implement my resolutions.

As you read through our third issue of Longevity, you’ll find loads of information and recommendations to guide you in your health journey, whether it be eating healthier, mental health, taking a day to unwind (yes, expect a spa story), learning about the importance of protecting the creatures in our ecosystem, finding balance, and so much more.

Congratulations to Nakayla Shakespeare who has been named Editor-in-Chief of ICONIC LIFE . We are thrilled for her to take this post. Her attitude, aptitude and creativity have earned her this spot!

Renee Dee

Our primary interest here at ICONIC LIFE is to ensure we provide you with top-tier, informative and entertaining content that you use on a deeper level than just reading. We want you to try the products, book the spa day, dine at the restaurants and experience the magazine.

YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT

SERVING SIZE

The serving size is the portion size the nutrient information is based on.

FATS SECTION

Fats are essential nutrients for the body. However, there are different kinds of fats, some of which you should avoid and some that are okay in moderation.

TRANS AND SATURATED FATS

Trans and saturated fats increase your risk of heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes, so limit saturated fats to less than two grams per serving and zero grams of trans fat. Most of the fats you eat should be non-saturated.

SODIUM

This tells you how much salt is in the food. Shoot for a lower number, less than 140 milligrams per serving.

CARBOHYDRATES

It is essential to look at this number in relation to the other nutrients. If it is a nutrient-dense product, having a high carbohydrate count is okay; however, if the product is also high in sugars, corn syrup and enriched flour, that indicates that the food is unhealthy.

PROTEIN

Protein builds muscle and helps the body fight infection, so eat protein-rich foods.

How to read a food label and what ingredients to avoid.

Understanding what you are putting into your body can benefit you in many ways. It can help you make informed decisions about your health, prevent you from ingesting harmful ingredients, and aid you in leading a healthier, happier lifestyle. By paying close attention to food labels, you can narrow your choices and avoid processed foods.

Nutrition Facts

8 servings per container

Serving size 2/3 cup (55g)

Amount per serving

CALORIES FROM FAT

The amount of fat in the total calorie count. TIP If this number is high, eat sparingly; fat intake should be no more than 30 percent of total calories.

% DAILY VALUE

This column shows whether the nutrients in the serving size contribute a lot or a little to your total daily intake. Five percent or less is a little; anything over 20 percent is a lot.

CHOLESTEROL

Cholesterol is only found in animal products, but try to aim for less than 300 milligrams per day (if you have no risk factors for heart disease) and 200 milligrams per day (if you have risk factors for heart disease).

DIETARY FIBER

Dietary fiber helps with digestion and keeps you full between meals.

SUGAR

Do your best to keep this number low, less than eight grams per serving.

* The % Daily Value (DV) tells you how much a nutrient in a serving of food contributes to a daily diet. 2,000 calories a day is used for general nutrition advice.

INGREDIENTS: The list of ingredients goes from most prominent to least prominent. Avoid foods with ingredients that you can’t pronounce. It is also important to stay away from foods that contain the following: enriched flour, hydrogenated oils, artificial flavors and colors, refined sugars, vegetable oils, high fructose corn syrup, sodium benzoate, potassium benzoate, sodium nitrates, nitrites and MSGs (monosodium glutamate).

VITAMINS + MINERALS

This section of a food label tells you the percentage of vitamins and minerals in the serving; try to eat foods with higher percentages.

Desert DECADENCE

A day at the spa inspires a new perspective on the healing properties of the desert.

Nestled in the foothills of Pinnacle Peak is a forest of majestic cacti and towering boulders that lead to the entrance to Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North. I live up north, too, at most 15 minutes from the resort. Why have I not visited more often? Sometimes, you need to get out of your bubble, break your routines and remind yourself to visit places you love.

When the resort opened 25 years ago, the lobby lounge was a popular place to decompress and enjoy what truly are some of the very best views of the city. A generous group of friends hosted my baby shower at the resort, and I’ve always loved the restaurants…a top-tier roster of fabulous chefs have passed through its doors. Somehow, a life filled with events and travel has kept me away from this North Scottsdale gem until the offer to revisit the spa piqued my curiosity.

I often pretend that I’m a five-star hotel inspector, and I notice every detail. From the chatty valets to the spa host who toured me through the luxe ladies’ locker room, service is the thread that always runs through a Four Seasons experience.

On this day, my goal was to bring a refreshed glow to my skin, soothe some achy muscles and relax. I scheduled a Desert Detox Body Scrub followed by a specialty massage.

The detoxifying body scrub is done in a wet room. My therapist was artful in managing the scrub, removing it and moving to my massage all on one table. I’m an ingredients gal, so I had to know everything in the scrub. A blend of Dead Sea salt, clay and poppy seeds gently exfoliates your skin. Next, a silky body oil with hemp seed oil, olive oil, raspberry extract and frankincense restores moisture, making your body feel about ten years younger!

I expected to have to dress and relocate to a new room for the massage, but one treatment flowed into the other, which made it a two-hour super treatment. Now try peeling me out of that heated massage bed!

I indulged in the Nopal massage using the nopal cactus…you know it as the prickly pear cactus found on the property. It’s known for its high antioxidant, vitamin and mineral content. The massage incorporates the application of warm cactus gel delivered straight from the cactus paddles to your skin. A local farmer delivers the plant, and it’s soaked in hot water to extract the gel. I felt smoother and tighter after the application.

The massage was lovely. My therapist was a 25-year Four Seasons veteran, and we enjoyed a conversation about healthy living and taking care of ourselves…good reason to return much sooner next time.

YEAR. YOU. NEW

Reframing your New Year’s resolutions.

As we enter the new year, it’s time to reframe our approach to personal growth. Instead of setting ambitious resolutions that often lack accountability, let’s focus on a powerful yet simple practice: checking in with ourselves. “How are you?” This seemingly straightforward question can unlock profound insights into our mental and emotional state.

Many high-achievers avoid this self-reflection, fearing it might reveal vulnerabilities. However, acknowledging our true feelings isn’t a sign of weakness—it’s a testament to our strength and self-awareness. In the fastpaced world of business and being successful, we often prioritize external achievements over internal well-being. But consider this: Just as you would address high blood pressure to prevent severe health complications, tending to your mental health is equally crucial for long-term success and fulfillment.

Symptoms like burnout, lack of clarity, constant exhaustion, irritability, changes in appetite and poor sleep are not merely inconveniences—they signal that your emotional well-being needs attention. Ignoring these signs doesn’t make you stronger, but addressing them does.

Start by choosing a time that feels right for your weekly or monthly self-assessments. Take a seat, take a deep breath… exhale. During these moments of reflection, tune into your emotional state and evaluate your progress. What brings you a sense of accomplishment and/or joy? What challenges have you faced and how have they affected your emotional well-being? Have you made any changes based on previous reflections, and if so, did they work?

This reflection isn’t about rigid adherence to goals, but about understanding your journey. If a certain aspect feels overwhelming, it’s okay to adjust your approach. Remember, emotional growth often happens in gentle, incremental shifts and sometimes you may need additional support.

Every step forward deserves a celebration, no matter how small the win may feel. Acknowledge the courage it takes to face your emotions and make changes. If, and inevitably when you encounter setbacks, approach them with self-compassion. These moments aren’t failures, but opportunities for deeper self-understanding and building of resilience.

By regularly checking in with your mental and emotional state, you’re not showing weakness—you’re demonstrating the kind of self-awareness and emotional intelligence that characterizes truly successful individuals.

As leaders in your fields, you set the tone for those around you. By prioritizing your mental health, you create a culture that values well-being alongside achievement. This balance isn’t just beneficial for you; it’s essential for sustainable success in all areas of life.

So, as you embark on this new year, make a commitment to regular self-check-ins. It’s not an indulgence—it’s a vital investment in your most valuable asset—you. Like any high-performance tool, your mind requires regular maintenance to function at its best. Embrace this practice as a sign of strength, wisdom and leadership.

Mon’Vie Mind Wellness enhances mental well-being through personalized treatment plans tailored to each patient from the start. Can You Teach an Old Cell NEW TRICKS?

Preserve your stem cells today, and you’ll heal by using the cells of your younger self.
By ICONIC LIFE

Did you know that when we put older stem cells near younger stem cells, the younger stem cells can transform the older ones to a more youthful profile? Essentially, the younger stem cells train the other cells to act younger.

We talked with Crystal Muilenburg of Acorn Biolabs to find out how, and then I visited Carly Klein, CEO of National Hair Loss Medical Aesthetics, to collect my own.

Acorn, founded in 2017, is a personalized regenerative medicine company helping people preserve their own cells to prepare for the future of cell-based treatments.

“Until now, if you wanted to collect stem cells, you’d have to have a surgical procedure, retrieving them from your bone marrow, adipose, umbilical cord or other places, which is not easily accessible and oftentimes painful. But did you know that you can find stem cells in the hair follicle? And they are much easier to collect there,” says Muilenburg.

Using a collection kit, 50 hairs are taken from the scalp, processed and then cryogenically frozen and stored for future use. The stem cells found in hair follicles are bioequivalent to bone marrow stem cells.

Most exosomes are sourced from donors. However, using one’s own cells that are preserved and banked for the future improves compatibility and acceptance. These cells are frozen and reanimated in the lab and used to produce the Acorn topical product. The product is then sent to a clinic, where they are reconstituted into a personalized hyaluronic acid to be used.

The biggest number of clinics in the U.S. using hair follicle collection for stem cells are using them alongside hair restoration procedures.

Essentially, Acorn does the collection, and your doctor would use the byproduct. The next phase would be to develop a haircare product made using your own stem cells.

One local medical clinic, NHLMA, is collecting these items.

“This has been groundbreaking for regenerative medicine. Patients are so excited to have the chance to bank their own stem cells. Not only for aesthetic purposes but for their health. We are thrilled to be one of the first in Arizona to offer this type of service for our patients,” says Klein.

That’s where it all begins. In the subsequent iterations, the company will explore applications benefitting sports medicine and recovery. Professional athletes and sports teams are interested in banking an athlete’s young cells to use later, with the advantage of having the youngest cells play a role in an athlete’s recovery.

Future uses could include a treatment for diabetes using stem cells, among other medical applications. A study was just published from the University of Toronto and Mount Sinai Hospital showing the ability to use Acorn autologous stem cells to create induced pluripotent stem cells, which essentially can become any cell in the body. From there, these stem cells were used to generate pancreatic cells and then islet cells, which are responsible for producing insulin.

What if you want to collect your stem cells and bank them for use later? It’s as simple as the hair on your head, and the professionals at NHLMA can do this procedure for you.

“UNTIL NOW, IF YOU WANTED TO COLLECT STEM CELLS, YOU’D HAVE TO HAVE A SURGICAL PROCEDURE… BUT DID YOU

KNOW THAT YOU CAN FIND STEM CELLS IN THE HAIR FOLLICLE?”

IF THE SHOE

FITS

There it is: the perfect shoe. It’s the shoe of the season, and you have to have it. You try it on only to realize you need a bigger size, but they’re sold out. What are your options? Do you buy the shoe and sacrifice comfort for style, or try to stretch it and make it fit? Those who choose the latter often overlook the long-term impact on their health. These small choices can lead to severe issues and even surgery.

For most of us, footwear is more than something we walk in; it’s part of our identity, a way to express our selves and belong to a group. In 2023, the U.S. led global consumer spending on clothing and footwear, reaching $548.5 billion. People are eager for the latest trends, from sneakers to sleek, red-soled heels.

Malcolm Gladwell’s The Tipping Point explores why some people are willing to sacrifice for fashion, helping push trends to popularity. A classic example is the Hush Puppies story. In the mid-1990s, a few Manhattan kids revived the brand by wearing its shoes, leading to widespread designer interest. By 1996, sales had skyrocketed, transforming Hush Puppies into a wardrobe staple.

“The biggest trend right now is ballet flats,” says Philip Manghisi, owner of Wunderkind Boutique. Alaïa’s crys tal-covered and mesh flats have sparked renewed interest.

While ballet flats are fashionable, Dr. Petrina Lewis, a board-certified podiatrist and founder of Southwest Foot & Ankle Center, advises a small heel to ease Achilles tension in the tendon. “I believe in function over fashion,” she says, noting the growing popularity of block heels and athletic shoes paired with long dresses.

Dr. Lewis warns that wearing uncomfortable shoes regularly can lead to plantar fasciitis, ingrown toenails, bunions and ankle instability. To avoid surgery, these conditions often require regenerative treatments like laser shockwave therapy, PRP or fillers. Shoes that are too narrow, loose or with extreme heels can also misalign the hips and spine.

Retail veteran Carolyn Cantor knows this all too well. After 50 years in the industry and wearing heels daily, she had bunion surgery. “It’s all on me,” she says, lamenting the pain that even comfortable shoes couldn’t fix, leading to surgery as a last resort.

Today, consumers are prioritizing comfort and functionality. “People want both,” Manghisi notes. His clients who are buying designer shoes look for something unique yet comfortable, like The Row’s zipped boots. “Everyone who tries them on says they’re comfortable,” he added. Cowboy boots are also gaining traction for their versatile style and comfort.

Making smart footwear choices can prevent long-term health issues. “Pick your moments,” Dr. Lewis advises. Limit the use of uncomfortable shoes and opt for insoles or gel padding. Dr. Lewis provides filler around pressure areas for clients who must wear uncomfortable shoes, creating a “pillow for your foot.” Botox is another option to temporarily block pain, but the best prevention is wearing shoes with good support.

Fashion can be captivating and emotionally driven, but true style comes from balancing beauty with function. Like Cinderella’s glass slipper, the right shoe fits effortlessly, without compromise. The shoe either fits or it doesn’t.

ARCHITECT Nick Mancusi.

ADDITION

More than an accessory, these ADUs are adding square footage and value to a home, making space for guests, home offices, workout studios or family.

If you own a home in Paradise Valley, you’re most likely on an acre or more with room for a tennis court, pickle ball court, lazy river swimming pool or guest house. But what if you have land to spare and a need for more space?

For what would be a similar size investment to that of adding another supercar to your garage, you can add an ADU—accessory dwelling unit—to your property, and its function will be more than just an accessory; it has the potential to increase the value of your home, appreciate over time and create space for living well on your property.

Enter Robert Singer, an award-winning lighting consultant, who, along with his wife, Cynthia, recently designed and built an ADU on their property. He partnered with architect Nick Mancusi, with the shared idea that a compact but bold architectural statement could be made with an ADU that offers luxurious living in less than 600 square feet and a building envelope of 24 x 32 feet.

“With the price per square footage on the rise in Paradise Valley, we chose to build a permanent structure on our property to add value and livable space, pouring a concrete pad that includes a shaded patio and overlooks a putting green. Our thought was that for the price of a jet card, private club membership or Ferrari with all the amenities, we could build a space that could host our guests, accommodate visiting family or serve as additional office space for our businesses,” says Singer.

The process began about a year ago when Singer worked with Mancusi to design the unit.

“We didn’t want one of those containers that wasn’t affixed to the ground. We wanted a safe and solid feel to the dwelling. One that would offer the same luxurious feeling of our main house,” says Singer.

Being an industry veteran, he installed high-quality, controlled lighting with a Lutron HomeWorks system, which ties into the main home.

“It has its own integral processor; I can program it from my phone, and I can operate it from the main house. We can set lighting levels for everything inside and out. I designed it with the best linear product that we specify for our billionaire clients. Everything is mud-in installation, which is super high-end, timeless and offers clean lines,” he says.

His company also recommends shading solutions for his high-end clients, and he used his experience in that area to design the shading for the structure to allow natural light during the morning and shade the unit from the setting sun.

Singer installed custom, surface-mounted roller shades from Lutron hidden behind a creative design solution, which hides the shading from view when fully open. The shades are all battery-powered and run on RF, eliminating the need for a power source.

The casita, as the Singers call it, has a Mid-Century Modern vibe, which complements the main house and can work with so many modern homes across The Valley.

The exterior patio features an extended beveling that creates a shaded area on the terrace, which is perfect for entertaining, grilling or waking to the morning sun.

Inside, the casita is fully equipped with a Fisher & Paykel dish-washing drawer, Summit refrigeration, an LG microwave and an induction cooktop. There is also a Samsung washer and dryer. The kitchen cabinetry, plumbing and countertops equate to the quality you’d see in a multi-million-dollar mansion.

“A permanent island seemed too restrictive to us, so we designed a movable island that you could pull out if you wanted to, potentially using it as a breakfast counter, a bar top or a workstation. It can be moved to the patio for entertaining, too,” he says.

Polished concrete floors are saw-cut with scoring that creates 4 x 4 squares inside and transitions to matte on the outside. While the space offers fully integrated HVAC, the concrete holds the coolness in. The concrete lighting pendants echo this vibe in matte gray with neutral muted tones.

The bath is modern and comfortably large, with matte black plumbing and accessories. “We prioritized counter space in the bath and wanted a larger shower with an open-door detail that doesn’t feel claustrophobic. The shower is 5 x 9, which feels good in this space,” says Singer, who floated the vanity in the bath with his signature lighting details below, serving as a night light.

Of course, the decorative lighting reflects Singer’s design flair. He used a pair of stunning Murano blown-glass fluted pendants in a brilliant cobalt blue in the bedroom.

“There is this invisible thread that ties the guest home to the main house. When you look left and right, it has the same flavor, and we used a lot of the same materials for continuity,” says Singer.

“For us, we saw home values increasing, and we felt we could probably triple the value of this unit, adding to the overall value of our property, which should be a huge ROI in the end. I guess I could have bought something else, but this investment will grow in value and not decrease in value on day one,” says Singer.

“What I learned from this process is that I loved working on the casita; I worked out the kinks as I went along and discovered a way to build this for a fraction of what it would have cost me to have a builder come in and build a guest house from the ground up. I was getting estimates for about a million dollars for that. We have created a new division in our company to build these for others at a very attractive cost and an even more attractive aesthetic,” says Singer, who is excited about this new venture.

DREAM ON

DREAM

Your days of counting sheep are over. Here is your blueprint for better sleep.

You may wonder what you can change in your daily routine to improve your overall health. The answer is: Get enough sleep. Sleep often takes a backseat to work, family and social obligations in our fast-paced world. Renowned sleep expert Dr. Michael Breus, PhD, a regular guest on “The Dr.Oz Show,” joined Renee Dee, publisher of ICONIC LIFE, in a recent episode of the ICONIC HOUR podcast to discuss the importance of sleep and how to improve your sleep quality. Here’s what we learned.

ABOUT

DR. MICHAEL BREUS, PhD

Michael J. Breus, PhD, is a clinical psychologist and both a diplomate of the American Board of Sleep Medicine and a fellow of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. He was one of the youngest people to have passed the board at age 31 and, with a specialty in sleep disorders, is one of only 163 psychologists in the world with his credentials and distinction.

His first book, Good Night: The Sleep Doctor’s 4-Week Program to Better Sleep and Better Health, an Amazon Top 100 Best Seller, has been met with rave reviews and continues to change the lives of readers. It is available in paperback as Beauty Sleep: Look Younger, Lose Weight, and Feel Great Through Better Sleep.

The key to getting a good night’s sleep is understanding why your sleep quality isn’t as good as it could be. The initial step at Dr. Breus’ office involves a comprehensive assessment, which entails a detailed discussion of sleep habits, lifestyle factors and medical history. According to Breus, sleep disorders commonly fall into two main categories: sleep apnea and insomnia. Sleep apnea, characterized by disrupted breathing patterns during sleep, often requires a sleep study for diagnosis. In contrast, insomnia, a condition marked by difficulty falling or staying asleep, necessitates a different approach.

“The thing to understand is that you can actually control your sleep,” Breus explains. “There is not a person listening to or reading this who cannot control their sleep with a little bit of understanding of how the sleep system works and putting that understanding into practice.”

The first step? Think about sleeping long before bedtime. “I like to get people to start

glymphatic system, the brain’s waste management system, removes harmful proteins like beta-amyloid and tau. These proteins, if left unchecked, can accumulate and damage nerve cells, contributing to the development of Alzheimer’s disease. Adequate deep sleep ensures efficient clearance of these proteins, promoting brain health and reducing the risk of neurodegenerative diseases.

Jet lag, a common sleep inconvenience while traveling, has been addressed through a mathematical solution. An app called Time Shifter, adopted by more than 750,000 users and even the FAA for pilots, offers a solution to mitigate the effects of jet lag. The app gives guidelines and suggestions on when to limit caffeine, see light, and go to sleep to help regulate the body’s natural circadian rhythm. All the user had to do is input their shift change and the app does the rest!

Breus suggests engaging in distracting yet boring activities before bed to wind down. Meditation and progressive muscle relaxation are effective techniques for calming the mind and body. He also recommends a unique method: counting backward by threes from 300. This mental exercise can help distract the mind and promote relaxation, making it easier to fall asleep.

Dreaming is believed to be a manifestation of emotional processing. During REM sleep, the brain processes emotional experiences related to significant events like weddings, funerals, divorces, or work-related stressors.

Blue light exposure from computers, cell phones and other devices during the day can suppress melatonin production, which is crucial for regulating sleep. While blue light at night may not significantly impact most adults, it can disrupt sleep patterns in children, especially those who spend long hours gaming. To mitigate blue light’s effects, it is recommended to lower screen brightness, use blue light-blocking glasses, and consider using software like Flux to adjust screen color temperature.

READY TO TRANSFORM YOUR SLEEP?

Breus offers a simple five-step approach to better rest:

1. CONSISTENT WAKE-UP TIME

Maintain a regular sleep schedule by waking up at the same time every day, regardless of whether it’s a weekday or weekend.

between six and eight hours. So, if you can stop at 2 p.m., half of it will be out of your system by 10 p.m. This gives you a better shot at falling asleep on time with only 50 percent caffeine in your system.

thinking about sleep from the moment they wake up until right before bed. What usually happens is that people don’t even think about sleep before then. Instead, they wait, wait, and wait until they’re falling asleep in front of the television,” Breus remarks.

The doctor explains that sleep involves two primary processes: sleep drive and rhythm. Sleep drive is regulated by adenosine, a hormone that builds up throughout the day, making us increasingly sleepy. On the other hand, sleep rhythm is influenced by our circadian rhythm, a biological clock that dictates our natural sleep-wake cycle.

The sleep cycle is composed of several stages. Stage one is a brief transitional phase, while stage two prepares the body for physical and mental restoration. Stages three and four, deep sleep, are crucial for physical restoration and the activation of the glymphatic system, the brain’s waste clearance system.

“The glymphatic system, which was discovered, believe it or not, only about 15 years ago, is what I call the waste management system of the brain,” Breus explains. “You know, those big trucks that show up once a week, and they take all your garbage out.”

The final stage of sleep, REM, is essential for mental restoration and memory consolidation. During REM, the brain transfers information from short-term to longterm memory and engages in dreaming. “Everybody dreams every night, but you just don’t always remember it,” Breus notes.

2. LIMIT AFTERNOON CAFFEINE

Avoid consuming caffeine, such as coffee or tea, after 2 p.m. to prevent nighttime disturbances.

3. MODERATE ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION

Limit alcohol intake to two drinks per evening and stop drinking at least three hours before bedtime.

4. REGULAR EXERCISE

Engage in physical activity for at least 25-35 minutes three times per week. However, avoid intense workouts close to bedtime. Breus recommends stopping exercise four hours before sleep to allow your body temperature to regulate.

5. THE THREE 15S

Incorporate a morning routine that includes 15 minutes of deep breathing, drinking 15 ounces of water (preferably before you caffeinate) and spending 15 minutes outdoors in natural sunlight.

Listen to the entire conversation on the ICONIC HOUR podcast to delve deeper into the intricacies of sleep. For those seeking a more comprehensive guide to sleep health, Breus’ book Sleep, Drink, Breathe is available to order on Amazon.

The

importance of honey bees.

ONEY

Honey bees. Some people love them, and some people don’t. No matter your personal opinion on these fuzzy pollinators, one thing is for sure: We need them. Not only for their crucial role in creating a healthy alternative to granulated sugars and sweeteners—honey—but also because they play a pivotal role in the functionality of our ecosystem. A big role for such a small creature.

ABOUT THE HONEY BEE

The honey bee is one of about 20,000 species of bees. As the name suggests, these bees are responsible for supplying the world with delicious honey. Honey bees live together in hives. The queen bee produces worker bees and drones (male bees). The worker bees are the pollinators and honey makers.

Interestingly, most honey bees in a hive are female. The queen bee stores sperm from drones, enough to last her lifespan. According to Connie Moore, master beekeeper and founder of Honey Hive Farms located in Peoria, Arizona; the queen bee is responsible for choosing the sex of her eggs.

The average worker bee generates about 1/12 of a teaspoon of honey in its lifetime, so it takes a lot of busy bees to add just a teaspoon of honey to your tea.

“The queen starts laying eggs in the honeycomb, and when she does that, she can decide if it will be a boy or a girl. Girl eggs are produced if the queen adds a drop of sperm and fertilizes it. If the egg is not fertilized, it hatches to be a drone,” she says.

The hive’s workings are fascinating. The worker bees choose their next queen. Eggs designed to become queens are placed in special cells within the hive. They are then fed what is called royal jelly, a substance produced by the mandibular and hypopharyngeal glands of the young workers. The royal jelly diet through the larva phase translates to the genetic expression of queen bee traits. If female bees are not fed a diet solely of royal jelly at larva phase, they will grow into worker bees. The new queen will replace the old one, and the cycle restarts.

According to Moore, queen bees have an average lifespan of two to three years. Meanwhile, worker bees live for about two to six weeks in the summer and 20 weeks in the winter.

Honey bees can be aggressive if they feel threatened. However, European honey bees often give you warning signs before they sting you, ultimately leading to their death.

“If European honey bees are displeased with you, first they’ll buzz in your face, and if you’re not paying enough attention, they will bounce off your face. If you still ignore them, that’s when they will sting. But, you can outrun a honey bee,” Moore jokes. “Be sure to run inside near a light source; they will gravitate to that.”

THE IMPORTANCE OF HONEY BEES

Other than producing honey, honey bees are responsible for pollinating about 80 percent of crops in the U.S. To put it in perspective, one in three bites of food you eat is pollinated by bees, although Moore argues that number can be even greater.

“Honey bees are an invasive species. They came here when European settlers did,” Moore explains. “Before honey bees, our main form of pollination was through the wind. However, now, our main resource for pollinating our crops and plants is through bees. They are essential to how our food system works, so we would like to keep them here.”

Honey bees make more than 12 trips daily from their hive to plants to pollinate. A single honey bee pollinates about 5,000 flowers per day. With an average hive containing about 35,000 worker bees, and if every bee left to pollinate, more than 175,000,000 plants and flowers would be pollinated daily.

Given these hefty statistics, the repercussions of the extinction of bees would be devastating.

“If our honey bees go away, it drastically changes our food system,” Moore says. “The first change would be the halt in honey production, but the second impact is that the plants that require pollination would die off immediately. Our food system would change overnight if honey bees went extinct. People don’t realize how many pollinators we need.”

According to Moore, honey bees are struggling for several reasons. “First and foremost, there is a loss of habitat and food they can access. The other part is that agricultural farms only plant one type of crop, which restricts the variety of nutrients the bees can consume. Another issue is the chemicals in the environment. Not all herbicides and pesticides kill the bees, a common misconception. However, the chemicals that do are very effective and have a hefty negative impact.”

THE RISE OF BEEKEEPING

Raising awareness and education about the importance of bees and their role in our ecosystem has increased interest in beekeeping. This includes allowing people to maintain a hive or colony of bees in their backyard.

One of the significant benefits of beekeeping is the supply of natural honey. However, Moore says that the benefits of beekeeping go deeper than just product. “Beekeepers tend to live a little longer. Some people say it’s from the bees’ vibrations. For me, it’s relaxing. My bees are like my pets; they know me by sight and smell.”

Beekeeping is more challenging than it may seem. Multiple factors can impact the health of your bees. One in particular is the Varrora Destructor Mite.

“Like dogs and cats, honey bees can encounter pests, too. The Varrora Destructor Mite is like a tick for honey bees. While honey bee colonies survive with some of these mites, the mites themselves negatively impact honey bees’ immune system.”

Moore recommends taking a beekeeping class, sitting in on bee club meetings, or at least watching a YouTube video first if you want to give beekeeping a go. However, it is important to note that beekeeping looks much different in Arizona than in the Midwest.

“Every beekeeper does things a little differently,” Moore says. “Find a mentor that fits your personality because, in my experience, there is no set way to do things as a beekeeper. The basics are the same, but how you manage bees varies depending on the person.”

Moore offers introductory courses on beekeeping at her farm, Honey Hive Farms. For more information, please visit her website at honeyhivefarms.com.

Selftriking Doubt

Todd Stottlemyre’s philosophy on overcoming failure.

“ IF WE CAN GET TO A PLACE WHERE WE CAN PREPARE WITH ALL OF OUR HEART…THAT IS THE MOMENT WHERE YOU START TO DISCOVER ”

In an insightful episode of ICONIC HOUR, Renee Dee, publisher of ICONIC LIFE, chatted with Todd Stottlemyre, former MLB pitcher turned life coach, to explore the essence of personal development, the often-hidden side of success and the mindset it takes to thrive both on and off the field. Behind his triumphs and two World Series titles, Stottlemyre shares a candid look at his journey, deeply intertwined with mental health, resilience and the emotional work it takes to build a life of true fulfillment.

LESSONS IN LOSING

In Stottlemyre’s perspective, failure is not a setback but an invaluable teacher. Reflecting on his experiences in sports and business, Stottlemyre explains that the key to longterm success is learning to approach failure without fear. “People have to overcome and find a way to make failure their friend,” he says. Stottlemyre emphasizes that while failure may not feel like a friend, it shouldn’t be treated as an enemy.

“ OUR THEME RIGHT NOW REALLY IS TO REWIRE OUR OPERATING SYSTEM. ”

For him, the real value of failure lies in its ability to teach. “I love failure because it’s our greatest teacher of what doesn’t work,” Stottlemyre notes. He encourages others to revisit difficult moments after emotions have settled, allowing them to examine the experience more objectively. “When we stand back from it...we can identify the lessons, which can become the greatest teacher.”

This approach extends beyond sports into his work in business. Stottlemyre notes that people often forget to pause and reflect, potentially revealing lessons that might otherwise go unnoticed.

BATTING AWAY THE OLD NARRATIVE

Stottlemyre’s journey with motivation is rooted in overcoming profound inner struggles. In a raw reflection on his life, he describes a time when, despite his achievements, he was in “a place of deep darkness.” Although he appeared to have it all from the outside, he says, “I couldn’t stand the guy looking back at me.”

This self-doubt stemmed from a traumatic event in his youth. When he was just 15, he donated bone marrow to his 11-year-old brother for a transplant, an act that eventually, and unintentionally, led to his brother’s death. Stottlemyre admits he internalized this tragedy, blaming himself and carrying an overwhelming sense of guilt.

For years, Stottlemyre struggled with anger and frustration, unable to find peace. His emotional turmoil spilled over into his career, where he became known as a volatile pitcher. “If I go down, I’m taking somebody with me,” he says, describing his aggressive mindset on the mound.

STOTTLEMYRE’S APPROACH TO COACHING EMPHASIZES A MENTAL RESET, GUIDING CLIENTS TO IDENTIFY WHAT THEY WANT AND SHED THE “OLD OPERATING SYSTEM” THAT OFTEN HOLDS THEM BACK. THIS RESET IS ALL ABOUT REPLACING OLD BELIEFS WITH A MINDSET THAT ALLOWS THEM TO ACHIEVE THEIR GOALS.

Photography by Leah Hope

TODD’S COACHING EMPHASIZES THE IMPORTANCE OF PREPARATION AND ACTION. HIS PHILOSOPHY? GIVE YOUR ALL IN PREPARATION, ACT WITH EVERYTHING YOU HAVE, AND DON’T FEAR POTENTIAL SETBACKS ALONG THE WAY.

FOR STOTTLEMYRE, FAILURE ISN’T SOMETHING TO FEAR BUT TO EMBRACE. HE EXPLAINS THAT BEING WILLING TO FAIL—AND LEARNING

FROM IT—IS ESSENTIAL FOR ANYONE SEEKING GREATNESS, WHETHER IN SPORTS OR LIFE.

This emotional imbalance affected his performance and led him to seek help. Stottlemyre reached out to a prominent sports psychologist, Harvey Dorfman, for guidance, marking the beginning of his healing journey.

Through his work with Dorfman, Stottlemyre learned to reframe his experiences and let go of the “old story” he’d been holding onto. Dorfman taught him about neuroscience, a concept that fascinated Stottlemyre and shaped his approach to personal development. “Anything that we hang onto from the past is destroying the mastery of the moment or the blessing of today,” he reflects, explaining how clinging to past traumas can prevent one from living fully in the present. Now, as a life coach, Stottlemyre helps others confront and “destroy the old stories” that hold them back, building new mental “operating systems” to foster growth and resilience.

EXTRA INNINGS: TURNING SETBACKS INTO COMEBACKS

As Stottlemyre puts it, “failure is an option;” it’s an essential component in discovering greatness. He stresses that no one reaches their peak without experiencing setbacks. “No one ever reached a platform of greatness without failing along the way or putting themselves out there, knowing failure is a possibility.” For Stottlemyre, success is about fully committing to the preparation and the action, regardless of the potential for failure.

He also addresses the damaging effects of external pressures, particularly others’ opinions, on individuals’ ability to pursue their goals. “So many people can knock us out of the things we want to achieve,” he explains, referencing how criticism or doubt from others can block us from even trying. He encourages his clients to push past self-doubt and criticism and instead focus on their preparation and effort. “If we can get to a place where we can prepare with all of our heart, then take action with everything we’ve got, understanding and knowing that today we could fail, that is the moment where you start to discover your greatness,” Stottlemyre says. This mindset has become the foundation of his coaching philosophy, guiding others to break free from the limitations imposed by their past experiences and beliefs.

Stottlemyre’s journey from overcoming personal struggles to coaching others highlights the power of resilience and the transformative impact of embracing failure. His experiences and insights on rewiring the mind and confronting self-doubt are captured in his books, The Observer and Relentless Success. To hear more about his philosophies on success, failure and personal growth, listen to the entire conversation on the ICONIC HOUR podcast.

Last year, at our ICONIC Design Awards, a residential community in Phoenix named KARMA won the ICONIC award for sustainable design. On the outside, the homes are sleek, with clean lines and a color palette derived from nature. But what makes them a leading example of successful smart design is what you don’t see.

KARMA is a pioneering collection of 11 modern, single-family homes prioritizing livability and longevity. Recessed windows and skylights protect the home from significant heat gain, providing natural light without the heat that usually comes along with it.

KARMA was conceptualized and spearheaded by Jason Boyer, FAIA, founder of Boyer Vertical. He received his bachelor’s degree in architectural studies from the University of Illinois UrbanaChampaign and his master’s in architecture from Arizona State University. With more than 28 years of experience in the home design industry, from architecture to construction, he has a long and impressive history as an architect and developer.

memberships and accolades. He founded Boyer Vertical in 2020 to incorporate forward-thinking design into every project he creates. KARMA stands as a testament to this goal.

KARMA is the first community in the U.S. to use SPAN.io panels as standard equipment; In KARMA homes, the panels allow homeowners to prioritize essential circuits through your phone, ultimately reducing your energy footprint, reducing grid dependence and enhancing the home’s efficiency.

Sustainable features of KARMA homes can be found all the way down to the bones of the house through the use of ZIP System

Insulated R-Sheathing, a structural panel system for roofs and walls that combines an engineered wood panel with a water-resistant and air-blocking barrier, creating a thermal break (regulating the temperature of the home) and making the walls more acoustically sound and superior.

Each KARMA home fosters indoor-outdoor livability and utilizes similar materials and colors from interior to exterior. “The bold

material choices help draw the eye to the backyard,” Boyer explains. “You see this in the kitchen. The outdoor fireplace is in a direct line of sight from the kitchen, drawing you to the outdoor space and promoting that indoor/outdoor living lifestyle.”

While the 2,500-square-foot footprint is modest, integrating natural light into the home played a significant role in its design. Windows and operable skylights breathe life into the living space and create an atmosphere that’s both open and inviting.

The home’s interior warmth and minimalism make the space feel open and cozy. Charcoal wood cabinets in the kitchen mimic the color of the garage siding, adding continuity from the outdoors and creating a bold contrast to the softer tones of the rest of the home. A large white and tan kitchen island complements the wooded accent wall at the home’s entry furthering that seamless connection between the indoors and out.

Not only is the functionality and design of the home sustainable, but the fabric of the house itself is as well. Boyer utilized top-tier post-tension concrete for the foundation. The steel cables placed between layers of concrete strengthen it and provide stability and safety for the structure. Renewable wood flooring was selected for the interior, a nod to longevity, and contrasting NewTechWood

European siding is used at the garage and entryway. The European siding is a better option on a home’s exterior because it gives buyers the beautiful wood finish but holds up better in the desert’s harsh conditions, making it long lasting and ultra-low maintenance.

Sustainability and incorporating features that enhance a home’s longevity and ensure comfortable living are always central to Boyer’s approach.

“I most enjoy the challenge of putting a project together. I consciously decided to move into this space where I control the design, development and construction. Sometimes I get too much in the weeds with executing the details, but the overall formation and strategic thinking that goes into the design’s vision is my favorite part of the process,” Boyer says. “While the lifespan of an average home is typically 30 to 50 years, architect-designed homes, crafted with high-quality materials and thoughtfully integrated into their surroundings, are built to last much longer. My design choices reflect a deliberate investment in durability, functionality, and aesthetic value, ensuring the home’s longevity and resilience. The details really matter.”

LOOK UP

Immerse yourself in the wonders of the sky and learn about the importance of Dark Sky Places.

In Phoenix, when you look up at night, you see a black sky illuminated by the moon. In Central Oregon, you see a kaleidoscope of stars that light up the sky like glitter. Not only is this sight strikingly beautiful and captivating, but it also impacts our ecosystem. Why do the stars shine more brightly in some places than others? The answer is light pollution.

Light pollution is precisely as it sounds. The artificial lighting in our buildings, streetlights and homes brightens the sky and stops the stars from being visible. While this seems harmless, it can adversely affect people and wildlife. That is why Dark Sky Places exist.

According to Cade Freels, Observatory Specialist at Sunriver Nature Center & Observatory in Sunriver, Oregon, there are five types of Dark Sky Places in the U.S.: sanctuaries, reserves, parks, communities and urban Dark Sky Places. “Sanctuaries are typically the most remote and thus focus more on long-term conservation of the natural night sky, while urban dark sky places typically focus more on public education of outdoor lighting that protects the natural night sky,” he explains. “The goals these places share are reducing light pollution, preserving the natural beauty of the night sky and providing public education about the benefits of minimizing light pollution and protecting our night sky.”

Central Oregon has four international Dark Sky Places, one of which is the world’s biggest international dark sky sanctuary spanning 2.5 million acres.

These Dark Sky Places help protect wildlife and can even benefit our lives. “Dark Sky Places protect ecosystems and wild species whose survival depends on the natural day/ night cycle,” Freels points out. “Disruptions to migration patterns, mating rituals, nocturnal behavior and circadian rhythms are some of the detrimental effects light pollution can have.”

IN CENTRAL OREGON, YOU SEE A KALEIDOSCOPE OF STARS THAT LIGHT UP THE SKY LIKE GLITTER.

Not only are the Dark Sky Places helping animals maintain their regular cycles, but they are also utilized to continue cultural history. “The night sky has been a source of storytelling myths and legends, guided navigation and have inspired wonder and introspection for centuries. Dark Sky Places ensure people in the future can connect with that history,” Freels says.

Light pollution has robbed us of much of the wonder and magnificence of the night, according to Freels. While it’s virtually impossible to completely stop light pollution in large urban spaces, becoming conscious of light pollution and taking measures—such as utilizing warmcolor LED lightbulbs and motion-sensor lights in outdoor areas—are small gestures that can help limit the amount of light emitted.

Without light pollution, we can see the Milky Way galaxy; stellar nurseries; our closest large galactic neighbor, the Andromeda Galaxy, which is approximately 2.5 million light-years away; and a beautiful sky loaded with illustrious stars.

“Bringing more attention to Dark Sky Places can enhance public awareness of the importance of minimizing light pollution,” Freels says. “Not only for us to view the wonder of the natural night sky, but also for protecting wild species adapted to a natural day/night cycle. Many people may not live in a Dark Sky Place, but by learning about and visiting these places, people can understand the importance of minimizing light pollution where they live and the benefits that come from that.”

“MANY PEOPLE MAY NOT LIVE IN A DARK SKY PLACE, BUT BY LEARNING ABOUT AND VISITING THESE PLACES, PEOPLE CAN UNDERSTAND THE IMPORTANCE OF MINIMIZING LIGHT POLLUTION WHERE THEY LIVE AND THE BENEFITS THAT COME FROM THAT.”

It’s the BALM

Ultimate Balm, a new, all natural beef tallow brand to watch out for.

Beef tallow, a centuries-old ingredient, is experiencing a modern renaissance in skincare. Entrepreneur and True Harvest Skincare founder Spencer Dee is front and center on this trend with a new product using the very best organic ingredients from around the world.

Traditionally used for its nourishing properties, tallow is rich in vitamins A, D, E and K, essential fatty acids, and antioxidants that deeply hydrate and repair the skin barrier. At True Harvest, Dee harnessed this powerful ingredient in his ultimate balm—a blend of natural, ethically sourced elements designed to heal and restore.

“I’m committed to sourcing the very best ingredients found around the world. This is more than a tallow balm; it’s a commitment to sourcing organic, pure, non-toxic

ingredients to create a handmade balm that is anti-bacterial, anti-aging, healing and nutrient-rich,” says Dee.

Ultimate Balm features grass-fed, grass-finished beef tallow paired with Manuka honey from New Zealand– known for its renowned anti-bacterial and soothing properties; infused olive oil for added hydration and beeswax to lock in moisture. To elevate the experience, Dee included essential oils like sweet orange, vanilla and frankincense, which were chosen for their skin-rejuvenating qualities and aromatic benefits.

The need for such a product is more urgent than ever. Conventional skincare often relies on synthetic fillers, harsh chemicals and artificial fragrances that disrupt the skin’s microbiome and cause long-term damage. True Harvest’s mission is to combat this trend by offering a natural, sustainable alternative that prioritizes health and transparency.

“I looked at my mom’s skincare stack and was shocked to see long lists of ingredients that no one can pronounce. Those aren’t natural, and they’re not good for us. That inspired me to make this balm,” says Dee, who started using beef tallow on his skin two years ago to combat inflammation.

“Three generations are behind this balm. My grandmother joins me in the kitchen for the making of the balm, and my mom, Renee Dee, runs my marketing department, though we are bringing this product to market through the newest distribution channels, and that’s my wheelhouse,” says Dee.

By combining traditional wisdom with modern innovation, True Harvest has created a balm that reflects a commitment to purity and efficacy. It’s more than skincare— it’s a return to roots, a stand against harmful industry practices and a testament to the power of nature to nurture our bodies.

“Peace of Mind”

Peace of mind is what we have delivered to our clients for forty-three years. Oliver Smith began sourcing diamonds directly from cutters, eliminating the middleman to bring wholesale prices to the Valley. We are transparent about our costs and margins—no in ated markups, no need to negotiate. Every natural diamond we o er is ethically sourced and GIA certi ed. We believe a diamond marks the start of a lifelong connection, and we price ours knowing we will be here to buy them back when it is time to trade in and upgrade. Rest assured—you are buying from a trusted, family-owned business rooted here in the Phoenix Valley.
