ANOTHER TRIP AROUND THE SUN

renee@iconiclife.com

@iconicreneedee

It’s almost another year around the sun, and Mother Nature put the pedal to the metal in 2024. In what was a lightning-fast year, there is so much to be grateful for and to remember! Thank you to our friends and clients who supported us all year long. We can’t do this without you; your continued partnership means the world to my team and me.

This year marked some fun highlights for ICONIC LIFE. This year was year three of Top Designer, one of my favorite features, and to date, we have honored 15 unique talents in Orange County and count those as 15 new friends that we can follow and publish as they continue their careers. In our third year, we love telling stories about Orange County and featuring all the beauty there.

In April, we published our historic Black & White issue in Scottsdale, an issue that was printed in black and white on special paper appropriate for the unique printing process it took to bring this issue to life. Our own Nakayla Shakespeare suggested the idea early in the year, and her vision was fully realized when we recently won an award for this single issue at the national magazine Folio Eddie and Ozzie Awards in New York last month. Seeing our clients get excited about this issue that will always be a part of the ICONIC legacy was so fun.

We partnered with celebrity fashion designer Zang Toi in August for this cover. His national status as one of the leading names in fashion is impressive. He served as creative director for our fashion shoot alongside our cover photographer, Mark Sacro, who has shot every ICONIC LIFE cover minus one, and the result was mind-blowing. Enjoy this fashion spread. It’s a good one! Thank you, Zang and Mark; we love you!

This fall, the Eddies & Ozzies recognized my podcast ICONIC HOUR with Renee Dee as the top podcast in the magazine industry. I’m so thrilled, but even more, I hope this helps me to grow this platform and to continue to tell the stories of people who are behind the best of the best in life: the designers, tastemakers, innovators and experience providers for living beautifully.

As we roll into the holidays, by the end of the year, we will have produced 20 original and comprehensive events for our clients in Scottsdale, Orange County and two in Palm Desert. We are so proud of our events, the unique venues and the first-class style. We must be creative in our approach and deliver a stunning event. That is the ICONIC brand.

Speaking of Palm Desert, we will launch The Desert Collection ICONIC LIFE magazine in 2025, serving Palm Springs, Palm Desert, Indio, Rancho Mirage, La Quinta and Indian Wells. We are super excited to launch this brand extension in a growing market.

Thank you mostly to my team, who works tirelessly and passionately to produce the leading luxury magazine in Orange County. I couldn’t be more proud, excited for the future and appreciative of your support!

Wishing you happy holidays and a new year filled with health, success, new pursuits and new passions!

With Gratitude,

DESIGN The Future Of

With 2025 right around the corner, what are top appliance and fixture experts seeing for our homes in the new year?

If you talk to any designers who just returned from High Point Furniture Market last month, they’ll tell you that color is back! The restrained palettes we’ve been seeing are brightening up in favor of happy colors.

The experts at Faucets N Fixtures and Native Coast Appliance echo the same message; color is returning, especially in the kitchen and outdoor grilling centers.

“The colors we see from La Cornue and Hestan are inspiring. I love seeing color come back to home appliances, and the designers I am working with are innovatively bringing color to their projects,” says Annette Reeves, a sales associate at Faucets N Fixtures.

With four locations across Orange County, Faucets N Fixtures is seizing the moment to support clients in building their dream homes and making memories with their families, whether it’s a new build or renovation. Owner Joel Warners understands the building boom underway in Southern California, launching Native Coast Appliance in 2023. Native Coast Appliance in Orange County is set to open in March 2025, bringing this love for providing a luxury appliance experience to life with a second location.

“For us, the future of design is about creating spaces that balance beauty and functionality with innovation. As we expand Native Coast into Orange County in 2025 and beyond in the years to come, our mission is to bring that vision to all our showrooms. We’re excited to be at the forefront in setting a new standard of superior product offerings, design expertise and customer experience,” says Warners.

“Joining Faucets N Fixtures and Native Coast Appliance aligned with all my goals of being a part of a growing company that understands luxury in this industry. This company is all about offering high-quality products and services and partnering with our trade members to provide a safe and welcoming environment for their customers to build their dream homes,” says Reeves.

With 18 years in the industry as an outside salesperson for the company, Alyson Delanty

understands what consumers want and joins Reeves in her belief in Warners’ vision for the company.

“I find so much inspiration and passion in the design process for kitchen and bath projects. It’s all about function and form; it must be practical and beautiful!” says Delanty.

Today, the team is seeing interest in new technology, like steam ovens, induction cooking and customizable cooktops. The good-old microwave has become utilitarian and is often hidden. This creates opportunities to educate consumers on what is possible in the kitchen.

“My favorite moment is when clients send me photos of home-baked cookies from their new oven or a beautiful new bathroom with a faucet that makes them happy every time they use it!” says Delanty.

“We opened Native Coast Appliance to offer a more complete solution for the trade and homeowner customers. Expanding into this area allows us to fully meet our clients’ needs by providing an unmatched, comprehensive showroom experience for plumbing and appliances,” says Warners.

Reeves says she loves working with clients to customize their homes to fit their lifestyles. She’s seeing more people incorporate a wellness approach in their homes—saunas, steam showers and cold plunges with hydra systems that turn to plunge.

In the world of plumbing, satin bronze and dark bronze captivate clients the most these days, and the brands offering stunning collections are all found at Faucets N Fixtures.

Cheese Please

Master the art of charcuterie.

Nothing draws you to the food table at a party quite like a beautifully prepared charcuterie board. The vibrancy of the ripe fruits, vegetables, fresh meats, and cheeses paints a beautiful picture. It’s art in an unexpected form. It’s easy to get lost in the intricacy of each board, asking yourself, how did they do it?

Charcuterie is a delicacy. Correctly placing each item on the board in a pleasing way and ensuring each food is not affected by the other takes time and attention to detail.

However, the time and effort put into these boards is well worth it.

“It’s an ephemeral art form closely related to culinary arts and, perhaps, events also,” Masha Welker, founder of Xoxo Charcuterie in Scottsdale, says. “It might not be art to all, but it is to us and judging from the testimonies of our clients, it is to them as well.

“There is an undeniable emphasis on aesthetics and a special focus on the experience,” she continues. “A good cheese board

will take you on a journey. It will begin with the eyes, as all eating does, entering the mind in the form of wonder, sparking curiosity and ultimately culminating on the palate. At its close, the experience should leave a lingering impression, like a mixture of delight and satiation. I think there is art in that.”

So, how do we transform our boards from looking like store-bought cheese platters into beautifully assembled, Instagram-worthy works of art? I asked Welker for some advice.

TIP ONE: THE BASE

“I suggest getting all the cheese on the board first, as it is the central element. After that, add the ramekins that hold jams and honey, followed by larger fruit like grapes.”

TIP TWO: PLACEMENT

“Do not place crackers or bread next to anything moist on a board. Serve the crackers and bread on the side in a separate vessel. Nothing is worse than soggy bread and crumbs on a board.”

TIP THREE: ASSEMBLY

“Choose beautiful ingredients for your boards. Beautiful produce will do most of the work for you. Allow the structure to be loose; let the ingredients flow and intermingle.”

TIP FOUR: GARNISHES

“Remember the garnish. Sprigs of mint, sage, thyme and rosemary make all the difference aesthetically while creating an irresistible aroma that cuts through the pungent smells of cheeses and salamis with some much-needed herbaceous freshness.”

Following these steps should help you achieve a well-crafted, delicious charcuterie board that will be the talk of the party. There really is no right or wrong way to construct a cheese and charcuterie board,” Welker says. “That’s part of the fun.”

Architecture That Celebrates The Joys of Living

“The architecture is pure art without being showy or ostentatious. While it would be a gorgeous home in any other location, it feels like a house that was perfectly designed to frame and elevate the view of Camelback and all of the stunning desert features outside. You really feel the awe of nature in every part of the house.”

Great Where Minds Meet

Discover the inspiring story behind “Meeting of the Minds,” a contemporary waterfront home that showcases the perfect blend of modern design and timeless elegance.

Photography by Lance Gerber

Nestled along the serene shores of Lido Isle in Newport Beach, you’ll find a contemporary masterpiece that seems to defy the definition of a beach house. Appropriately named “Meeting of the Minds,” the 3,196-square-foot home results from a harmonious partnership between the homeowner, renowned architect Eric Aust, Sailhouse and the talented team at Morrison Interiors.

From the outset, the homeowners’ vision was clear: a modern beach house that directly contrasted their primary residence in Chicago. Denise Morrison, founder and principal designer of Morrison Interiors, and Rachel Morrison, vice president, enthusiastically embraced this challenge.

“It was a great collaboration that began with some interesting inspiration images we shared showing a direction we felt would be nice for the interior design,” Denise recalls. Through collaborative discussions and exploring various ideas, the team successfully developed a design direction that resonated with the client’s vision and got to work on their home away from home.

The house’s exterior is a striking blend of modern and traditional elements. The architect’s choice of bush-hammered Gascogne blue limestone and gray-toned cedar siding creates a captivating interplay of texture and color. Inside, the design team echoed these elements with linear details on cabinetry, small reveals in waterfall slab work and blackened metal accents. The builder executed the design elements to make the exterior and interior feel completely connected.

One of the home’s standout features is the innovative use of space. “We were able to create a beautiful desk and storage space that converts easily into a queen Murphy bed when they need extra room for guests,” Denise explains. “Disguising functionality was challenging, but we are quite pleased with the results.”

Another unique space is the sitting room on the other side of the primary suite, which can be transformed as needed to offer

versatility for the homeowner’s evolving needs. “This space went through many use-case possibilities: a workout room, a play area for future grandchildren, a reading space, etc.,” Rachel notes. “As a result, we designed a multi-functional space that can flex with the clients as their needs change over time.”

In contrast to the home’s modern architectural lines, Rachel also points out that the primary bedroom offers a peaceful retreat with warm wood paneling and cozy furnishings. This departure from contemporary design highlights the homeowner’s desire for comfort, creating a space that perfectly balances relaxation with refined coastal living.

Another highlight of the residence was the thoughtfully designed wine room, which provides a stylish and practical space for the homeowner’s extensive wine collection. “Finding a space that would house their collection beautifully and functionally was particularly pleasing,” Denise shares.

The home’s outdoor spaces are equally impressive. The back patio has a one-of-a-kind floating pedestal decking system that ensures a level surface while allowing for drainage.

There is also an impressive use of glass, metal, and stone that bridges the home to the waterfront. The glass railing provides an unobstructed view of the bay, while the stone complements the flagstone used on the front and sides of the home.

“Because the home is adjacent to the water, we wanted the railing system to feel open. The glass allows for a seamless connection to the water beyond,” Rachel says. “And where it connects to the homeowner’s deck, a wood component comes into play, which connects nicely with the home’s cedar siding.”

While the home’s design is undeniably modern, the Morrison Interiors team was careful to infuse it with warmth and comfort.

“We did this by layering textural fabrics, comfortable and plush upholstery and incorporating interesting art and accessories,” Denise notes. “The combination of these elements within a modern envelope makes this home inviting.”

Award-winning architect C.P. Drewett designed this elegantly crafted modern home in north Scottsdale’s Estancia Golf Community.

With a nod toward Mid-Century Modernism, the home’s design takes full advantage of its unique setting. Pocketing doors slide open to allow full immersion with the outdoors, creating a pavilion-like ambience where the indoor/outdoor spaces meld into one another.

Now available! $8,750,00

Other features include a split primary suite, two guest suites, an office in the main house, and a detached guest casita with a bedroom suite and sitting area. A 1,322-squarefoot luxury car lounge provides the perfect setting to showcase your auto collection while entertaining.

SAUSAGE ROLLS

NAKAYLA SHAKESPEARE, EDITORIAL COORDINATOR

Sausage rolls are delicious snacks to have as everyone anxiously waits for Thanksgiving dinner to be made. They’re also a great after dinner delight when you’re craving something savory but don’t want to go back for thirds (or fourths).

This recipe has been in the family for generations. My great granny taught my nana and my nana taught my mom, who has been making them since I was a child. This recipe is more than just a great dish at the table, it’s a way that my family stays connected through tradition. When I eat sausage rolls, I feel like I am a kid again.

INGREDIENTS

1 package puff pastry sheet

1 package Jimmy Dean sausage

1 egg

1 cup flour

INSTRUCTIONS

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Sprinkle flour on your countertop. Roll out the puff pastry sheet on a floured countertop. Cut the puff pastry sheet in half. Sprinkle more flour to an open space on your countertop. Roll your sausage in the flour until the sausage is 1 inch in diameter.

Place sausage on top of the puff pastry sheet. Brush egg on the edge of the pastry sheet (this will be used as “glue” to seal your pastry together). Fold the pastry over the sausage and pinch at edge to seal. Brush the top of the roll with egg.

Make diagonal slices diagonally all the way down the roll and cut in 2 inch increments to make separate sausage rolls. Place in the oven, cook until golden brown.

WILD RICE AND BUTTERNUT SQUASH BAKE

ALLIE WOODARD, FORMER TEAM MEMBER

This Thanksgiving family recipe is a modern take on a classic casserole. This dish has an herbal warmth to it and is packed with flavor.

“We first found this recipe while flipping through a Real Simple magazine. When our family tried it for the first time we all fell in love with it and it has become a staple at our Thanksgiving table ever since,” former ICONIC LIFE team member, Allie Woodard says.

INGREDIENTS

1 cup uncooked wild rice blend

1 3/4 cup vegetable broth

1 pound pre-chopped butternut squash

1 yellow onion sliced lengthwise into thin wedges

4 ounces mushroom blend sliced

3 sprigs rosemary

2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar

3 tablespoons olive oil divided

1 1/2 cups heavy whipping cream

1 teaspoon Kosher salt divided

1 1/4 ounce parmesan cheese finely shredded

INSTRUCTIONS

Cook wild rice blend according to package directions, substituting broth for water. Transfer to a large bowl; let cool to room temperature, toss occasionally with fork.

Preheat the oven to 425°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Place squash, onion wedges, mushrooms and 2 rosemary sprigs on a baking sheet. Drizzle with vinegar, 2 tablespoons of oil and 3/4 teaspoon salt. Toss to coat. Roast until squash is tender and browned (25 to 35 minutes). Let cool to room temp. Discard rosemary sprigs.

While squash cools, combine cream and remaining rosemary sprig in a small saucepan. Cook over medium, stirring occasionally, until cream begins to bubble around the sides. Remove from heat and let stand for 15 minutes. Discard rosemary sprigs.

Add squash mixture, 1/4 cup cheese and remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt to rice in a bowl. Toss to combine; transfer to a lightly greased 2-quart baking dish.

Preheat the oven to 375°F, pour cream over rice mixture, top with remaining 1/4 cup cheese and drizzle with remaining 1 tablespoon oil, bake until cream is bubbly around edges and top is browned (30 to 35 minutes).

GRANDMA’S CRANBERRY RELISH

RENEE DEE, PUBLISHER

This relish will give your Thanksgiving dinner a note of sweetness. Paired perfectly with your golden turkey, the Thanksgiving family recipe of Publisher Renee Dee’s cranberry relish is sure to be a hit at your table this year.

“This traditional, cold cranberry relish has been in my family for decades, and it was always a favorite of my grandparents,” Dee says. “My grandfather would assemble a grinder with a vice grip to the ironing board and grind away in the kitchen to my grandmother’s directions. At an early age, the tart and tangy flavor became a favorite of mine, and when I started making Thanksgiving in my own home, I started making it myself. My grandparents even went to a vintage shop to get me my own grinder. Don’t tell, but today the Cuisinart does the job for me and allows me to make up to 40 jars to share with family and friends for whom I’m thankful.”

INGREDIENTS

32 ounce bag of organic, fresh cranberries

2 large organic navel oranges

1 cup sugar in the raw Lots of love

INSTRUCTIONS

Wash cranberries and oranges. Eliminate any stickers on the oranges as you’ll be using the rind. Cut the oranges into about 8 pieces.

Using a large Cuisinart food processor, or old-fashioned hand grinder as Gram’s used, grind the washed fruit until all the big pieces are reduced to small chunks. Transfer into a glass bowl with a lid.

Add the raw sugar and blend until the sugar dissolves. Cover and refrigerate overnight.

ICONIC TIP

Quadruple the recipe and put in mason jars to give as gratitude gifts.

2 cups sharp cheddar cubed

Inspired by the client’s California roots, Jen Samson transformed a Park City home into a stunning blend of modern elegance and timeless charm. By incorporating elements like a California-inspired color palette and sourcing unique pieces from the West Coast, Samson successfully brought a piece of the Golden State to Utah.

Jen Samson, principal designer and founder of Jen Samson Design, has once again outdone herself. Her latest project, a stunning 5,152-square-foot home in Park City, Utah’s prestigious Park Meadows neighborhood, is the picture-perfect embodiment of mountain modern luxury.

This six-bedroom, 5.5-bathroom residence perfectly blends contemporary elegance and charm. The moment you step through the front door, you’re greeted by a harmonious marriage of natural materials, bold colors and textured surfaces. Samson has a keen eye for detail and a passion for sourcing unique pieces. She is renowned for her ability to create stylish and functional spaces. Her signature style is a mix of modern and vintage elements,

with a focus on creating spaces that are both timeless and trendsetting – all evident in this project.

Park Meadows is one of Park City’s most sought-after residential neighborhoods, filled with large, pine tree-lined streets. Inspired by the whimsical beauty of the home’s surroundings and the client’s desire for a Californiainspired aesthetic, Samson crafted a cozy and sophisticated space. The designer’s signature style is evident in every corner of the home.

“We aimed to create a home that feels tailored yet comfortable, a timeless home that has an undercurrent of craftsman style,” Samson shares. “Light colors, natural wood tones and a serene, welcoming and warm vibe.”

LOCATION Park City, Utah. INTERIOR DESIGN Jen Samson Design. ARCHITECT Farrell Architecture. BUILDER Alpine Design Build Utah. SYLIST Kara Perlis, @house.of.kara. PHOTOGRAPHY Chad Mellon, @mellon_studio.

The 18-month design process began with a deep dive into the client’s lifestyle and preferences, laying the foundation for the project. The young family, transplants from Northern California, desired a functional and stylish home. They sought a space to reflect the laid-back California lifestyle while embracing their new mountain life in Park City.

After Samson understood the family’s overall vision for the home, it was time to decide on the color palette. “We learned that light colors like soft blues and greens pulled from nature were something they loved and hoped to bring into the Park City home,” Samson says. “One of the very first design decisions I was passionate and excited about was to use a perfectly imperfect minty blue-green speckled, glazed brick as the backsplash throughout the kitchen and the butler’s pantry. This particular brick, by Clé Tile, is called New California and is inspired by the California landscape and the mid-century craft movement.”

The incorporation of various wood finishes complemented the newly decided upon color palette and further enhanced the warm and inviting ambiance. Samson adorned the home with exquisite “jewelry” in the form of hardware, lighting fixtures, plumbing and art to elevate the space. These elements added a layer of luxury and rich sophistication to the home, tying everything together.

And in keeping with the theme of bringing California to Utah, Samson ensured the family would never truly leave it behind. The design team shipped and trucked an enormous amount of art and accessories from California to Park City, layering the home with vintage California studio pottery, new and old pieces of art and various other accessories.

The heart of the home is undoubtedly the kitchen. The open-concept layout connects the kitchen to the dining area.

“Because most of the home’s first floor is an open floor plan, it was important to create smaller, more intimate spaces where our clients and friends could gather,” Samson explains. “The built-in banquette allows six or more to eat or lounge comfortably in a more relaxed setting.”

Samson is particularly enamored with the fabrics chosen for the upholstery in this area, especially the striped Zak + Fox fabric on the extra-long cushions and back pillows. These textiles, paired with the gorgeous dining light fixture—a stunning piece that is a mix of brass, leather, and green onyx are just a few examples of how she incorporated a mix of materials throughout the home.

“Mixing materials such as wood, metals, natural stone, wallpapers and various other textures makes a home layered and unique,” Samson says.

One of the most special rooms in the house is the clients’ baby nursery. They welcomed him during the project’s construction and Samson knew that this room had to be spectacular.

“I stumbled upon the mid-century Bill Hinz hooked wool tapestry when sourcing for art, and our clients instantly fell in love with it. This became the inspiration for the room” Samson recalls. “We then paired that piece with a wallpaper called Sunbird by These Walls. Within the somewhat retro abstract design, the paper has soaring birds and sunshine reminiscent of what one may find in California, or on a mountaintop in Utah.”

When initially sharing their vision for the home, the clients requested that Samson bring in as much light as possible.

Despite the home’s initial darkness, she saw an opportunity to transform the space. Overcoming the challenge of limited natural light, she strategically added clerestory windows over the dining area, three windows along the primary bathroom wall and enlarged as many existing windows as possible.

Another challenge Samson was able to overcome was the tight timeline. The client was eager to move into their new home by the end of the year, and Samson’s team worked tirelessly to meet this ambitious deadline. “Like most projects, the timeline shifted for various reasons, often including weather delays,” she says. “We installed and photographed this home during a major snowstorm, which made for several unexpected challenges!”

Despite the trials, Samson and her team created a breathtaking sanctuary for a growing family. Her dedication and experience were instrumental in crafting a home that is not only stunningly beautiful but also livable and inviting.

Wellness Within

Hotel at Hanalei Bay

If there is one thing we desert dwellers love, it’s experiencing lush green terrain and moisture when we travel. Kauai is a mecca for both. Kauai is the most northern island in the Hawaiian chain. Known as the garden island, it is draped in emerald mountains, tropical rainforests and cascading waterfalls. I traveled there with my son, Spencer, for a week of wellness in the perfect environment for restoration, renewal and relaxation.

When we landed, our desert-parched skin was immediately treated to the high humidity of the islands. It felt like the air itself was the first part of our wellness experience.

Our destination was 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay on the island’s northern side, about an hour from Lihue airport. I knew this was the perfect trip for this mother-son duo as we are committed to healthy living, eating an organic diet and delighting in the latest bio hacks. While he is 22, and I am well, his mother, we’re both focused daily on turning back the hands of time. We’re a little obsessed.

Upon arrival, the modern, biophilic design of the resort impressed us both. The entrance focuses on bringing the outdoors in with an open-air lobby and large windows that give way to the dramatic view of Hanalei Bay and its majestic, mountainous coastline, which was our view from every vantage point of the resort for the entire trip.

Spoiler alert! We loved this trip! I could easily declare this my very favorite resort. I wouldn’t be alone, Condé Nast Traveler added 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay to its Gold List this year (the only Hawaiian resort to be named to the list.) Spencer declared it totally “dialed in…” which is a high praise in wellness hacker lingo.

The resort is a mission-driven, sustainable resort founded on the idea that those who travel the world should also care about it. That philosophy was consistent throughout our week.

Our hotel room had a purified water bottle filler with refillable bottles. The spa uses products found on the island. The organic, locally sourced juices are sourced from a beloved local purveyor, Kauai Juice Company. A sign in our room invited us to donate our gently used clothing upon departure.

Some of the local wellness experiences include joining a team for beach clean-up and spending time at a pet rescue shelter.

This was more than just a pretty resort; the goal was to significantly impact us. And it did.

The rooms are beautiful, with an organic feel and local art on the walls. Let’s not forget the best part: the stunning view. An AD100 award-winning designer, Nicole Hollis was the bright mind behind these bohemian chic interiors.

The design theme is organic textures, with puka lava rock in the showers and basalt flooring with natural jute rugs. Handwoven lighting, reclaimed wood ceilings and woven willow wall features ground the space. Handmade furnishings from reclaimed teak elevate the Kauai vibe.

Moments into settling into our room, a wellness sage named Josh stopped by to bring us treats, as he called them. I was expecting strawberries, but instead, he revealed a cart with leg compression pants, an infrared mat, a percussion massager, healing crystals, a weighted blanket, a noise machine and a meditation cushion, all to be used as in-room amenities.

With a complete itinerary of fitness, spa and no-touch therapies, our week was nicely stacked up with our favorite things. The fitness center is enormous and it has everything. I shared with a friend that it almost looked like someone with an unlimited budget outfitted the gym with everything they could invest in. From weights and machines to Peloton bikes and a BMI scale, there was more equipment to keep us working out once if not twice a day.

Multi-day journeys are created to accomplish specific wellness goals. The resort calls it Within Wellbeing, which embodies complete wellness journeys supported by expert practitioners, including board-certified physicians. Organic pioneer Carole Bamford founded Bamford Wellness Spa.

Our journey included a private yoga class taught by Kinsey, who applied gentle pressure to deepen our moves. We used canvas straps to deepen the stretches we practiced. The stretch felt so amazing we ordered the bands when we got home.

We did a private meditation class on a waff (a donut-like inflatable designed to help with balance). It gave the feeling of weightlessness. While on the waff, we focused on Wim Hof breathing, sound bath healing and silent meditation.

I was so calm that I eventually felt I didn’t need to breathe. We learned the benefits of nose breathing and breathing in cycles. Kevin, the instructor, is a true expert and inspired me to think differently about meditation.

I enjoyed the intuitive herbal ritual in the spa, which utilized noni leaves on my back to melt away tension. The products used came from Kauai Farmacy, which is made with comfrey and noni plants to encourage circulation and detoxification. The service started with a foot bath and

ended with a light facial. Hopefully, every cell of my body soaked up the mineral-rich goodness of the treatment.

During that time, Spencer experienced the rainbow chakra mat, a no-touch service that detoxifies the body with heated crystals, far infrared, negative ions, photon lights and PEMF. He shared that he felt grounded and calm from the treatment.

Other options include a sunlight infrared sauna, soma dome meditation pod, ocean float tank and the pièce de résistance: a four-person hyperbaric oxygen therapy pod, where you breathe in 100-percent pure oxygen in a pressurized environment. I’ve wanted to do this for so long but have been concerned about claustrophobia in smaller chambers. No problem here! Cryo and cold plunge therapies are coming soon; we missed them on this trip.

The spa has two pools, both offering majestic ocean views: a quieter day-bed environment surrounding a negative-edge pool and a bustling pool with a sandbox restaurant for casual bites and beach drinks. We had a private cabana on the beach with pillows, shade and a front-row seat to the ocean’s splendor.

All this working out and wellness can create an appetite. We dined daily at 1 Kitchen, founded on plant-forward, hyper-local and sustainably sourced cuisine from the island and its surrounding waters. The menu features the best ingredients from Kauai’s farmers, ranchers, fishers, and growers.

1 Kitchen’s evolving wine list is one of the island’s largest, featuring more than 165 labels highlighting organic and biodynamic vineyards, plus zero-waste cocktails made with local rum and spirits. Daily brunch sustained us until dinner, with a stop at the organic juice bar, Neighbors, each day for a snack. The juices come in glass containers, which matters very much to me.

One evening, we had sushi at Welina Terrace. The breathtaking views of Mount Makana at sunset and live music made for a total Insta moment. As expected, the sushi was exceptionally fresh and delicious. I can’t stop thinking about the truffle Hamachi roll while Spencer indulged in the Wagyu Tataki.

A trip is only complete with shopping. The resort shops were well-curated with beautiful products, swimwear and workout attire. We shopped before we departed.

What can I say? 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay is my new favorite resort. It fits my vibe. The staff became like friends, and we truly felt cared for.

We look forward to returning soon.

ARCHITECT Brandon Architects. GENERAL CONTRACTOR Gallo Builders. INTERIOR DESIGN Hawk & Co. LANDSCAPE DESIGN MDZA Landscape Architecture.

Forces of nature slowed the completion of an Emerald Bay home, but the results are an ode to minimalism.

WAIT

Photography by Manolo Langis

The modern home rises steeply to encompass views of Dana Point, Crystal Cove, the Pacific Ocean and sunsets beyond Catalina Island. Located in the Emerald Bay community next to Laguna Beach, the new home is a minimalist ode to views created by Costa Mesa-based Brandon Architects and interior designer Summer Jensen of Hawk & Co. in Laguna Beach.

However, this new build didn’t rise overnight—in fact, it was a fiveyear project thanks to forces of nature, according to Jensen. First, she says there was a year of planning, followed by a foundation that had to be poured in four stages.

“Then we had rain delays,” she recalls. “In fact, there was so much rainfall in 2019 that the governor of California declared a state of emergency. Then, COVID-19 hit right after that, which made the process even longer.”

Jensen says the delays had a bright side—the design/build team had plenty of time for adjusting the plans, which created an even better home.

Designed for a couple with two school-aged children and wanting a place to raise their family, entertain and host events, the

8,400-square-foot, five-bedroom abode features what architect Ryan McDaniel has dubbed a “reverse living concept,” in which the main living spaces, including the living and dining rooms, kitchen and primary suite are located on the top floor to capture the best views.

The garage and staircase to the entry are at street level, while the middle floor includes secondary bedrooms, a den and the theater. With a terraced plan and varying deck sizes, the home was built with raked limestone walls, floor-to-ceiling window systems, metal accents, Western red cedar ceilings and eaves.

Having collaborated with Brandon Architects on previous projects, Jensen understood the home’s pared-down-to-the-essence aesthetic. She echoed the architecture’s cream and black palette, choosing the same hues to keep the focus on the shimmering views and light-filled spaces. “The drama of this home comes from the stark contrast of the black and neutral colors,” she says. “It feels strong and edited.”

For the living room, which melds seamlessly with the kitchen and dining space, Jensen designed a custom island sofa with seating facing two directions to provide options for entertaining groups, not to mention front-row seats for seasonal whale-watching along the coast.

Above a Holly Hunt dining table and Poltrona Frau chairs, Jensen suggested suspending a sculpture by Korean artist Bahk Seon-Ghi made of hanging pieces of charcoal illuminated by light fixtures in the ceiling. “It’s what I call an inverted chandelier,” Jensen says, who is also a lighting designer. “The light sources are outside of the sculpture.”

The kitchen’s black rectangular island is a statement piece—a blocklike art object that balances the long, narrow space. “I also wanted to hide the cabinets and appliances,” says Jensen of the kitchen’s sleek appearance. “The upper cabinets are lime-washed to blend with the walls, and the lower cabinets are recessed into the wall to make them disappear.”

While much of the home and its interior are strong and linear, the primary bedroom is a cocoon of ivory tones and curvaceous furnishings. “It’s a stress-free environment of soft shapes that counterbalances the architecture,” Jensen explains.

The new home was a fresh start for the owners, who relocated to Southern California from Las Vegas, meaning Jensen specified everything from sofas to spoons. “When you see a space in your head, you see all the way down to how the salt and pepper shakers should look,” she says. “It was fun to get into the details with this house.”

While the owners patiently waited out the design phase and natural forces that prolonged the construction timeline by biding their time in a rental home, Jensen saw the delay as a gift. “We came up with ideas halfway through construction like adding a rooftop cabana bar and deck,” she says. “We found we had the luxury of time to deliver a more nuanced design.”

“Our approach to design affirms the possibility of fulfilling the rigorous requirements of the client while engaging in a spirited and robust dialogue with the site,” Noppenberger says.

Noppenberger’s work philosophy explores the contrapuntal aspect of human nature through the creation of a physical space, which can be both sheltering and expansive, communal and intimate and permanent and ephemeral.

Noppenberger adheres to the principal ethos of modernism, to strip away the extraneous and be somewhat reductive. This approach leads to a poetic space, characterized by the sculptural interplay of light, material and form.

The HOST MOST Who Does The

The renowned architect designs homes… and lifestyles.

Upon completing each home design, architect Mark Candelaria “christens the kitchen” by throwing a dinner party for his client.

The renowned principal of Arizona-based Candelaria Design, whose stunning abodes can be found throughout the country, serves as host, cook and entertainer. He wheels in his wagon of utensils, place settings, decor and menu ingredients to create evenings to remember and events that he hopes his clients will replicate in their new homes.

“There is nothing like a great dinner party to bring people together,” says Candelaria, whose bon vivant enthusiasm is palpable. When designing a house, he and his team create not just floor plans but also a life plan. “We design for a lifestyle our clients want to lead, and our project-ending dinner parties are intended to inspire and showcase to the client how their new space can be fully enjoyed.”

The “cooking thing” (as he calls it) is, and always has been, part of any Candelaria gig. The architect was a young man when he realized the power of a shared meal and incorporated the ritual throughout his professional career. His company’s Scottsdale office features a fully operational gourmet kitchen. “It’s better to connect the entire team,” he explains. “Cooking builds bonds. It’s fun and brings

everyone to an equal level. It’s a key ingredient to the Candelaria experience.”

And that experience extends beyond his architectural projects. The designer and his wife, Isabel, are equally recognized for their annual Candelaria Design Tours, leading full immersion trips to Italy, France, Spain, Oaxaca, Santa Fe and Oregon’s Willamette Valley. The intention? Explore other ways of life and inspire tour participants to bring enjoyed practices into their homes.

They’ve been conducting the tours for 25 years, incorporating culture, history, architecture and cuisine. “The most important moment on each trip is the cooking class,” says Candelaria, who credits his director of business operations and partner, Evelyn Jung, and his daughter, media director Tiffany Candelaria, for their tour planning expertise. “Four hours of cooking and four hours of eating. Our travelers always bond during this part of every tour.”

Candelaria’s client and friend, Phyllis Lerner, has participated in several of these trips. An Umbrian excursion inspired her Candelaria-designed, Italian-esque Arizona estate. “Every event with Mark is about fabulous food and wonderful, interesting people,” Lerner remarks. “There is nothing this man doesn’t do well. He is an incredible architect. He cooks, sings, plays the piano, paints and is charitable. Mark is the one true renaissance man I have ever met.”

His eclecticism is never more apparent than when he’s hosting one of his now ICONIC dinner parties—whether it’s on a European tour, within a client’s home, in his own house, or the office. The architect pulls out all the stops with the help of Janice Rantanen, his director of lasting impressions, who curates the themes and tablescapes. He begins by selecting one of the more than 20 different sets of plates and china within his collection, from which Rantanen will choose the matching decor. He likes to start the party with a crafted cocktail aperitif. A classic Old Fashioned is a favorite, for which he makes his own smoked simple syrup.

Guests are typically offered appetizers of charcuterie and cheeses before sitting down for the four-or-five-course meal, which might include any number of dishes, and the menus are available on his company website. Beef Bourguignon, Coquilles Saint Jacques, Southwest Beef Wellington, and Classic Halibut Puttanesca are just some of the delicious offerings in his arsenal.

A particular guest favorite and a Candelaria marquee item is his Spanish Basque Paella, which is so popular

and associated with his brand that charitable donation requests pour in annually. When able, he responds with a 20-inch masterpiece of shrimp, chorizo, clams, mussels and halibut. Often an event’s prized live auction offering, the dish has been known to fetch $8,000 per pan. He donated 10 in the past year, helping to raise $80,000 for charity.

When finished in the kitchen, Candelaria ditches the stovetop in favor of the piano bench. True to his brand, the architect has a grand piano in his office. He’s a fan of the American standards songbook and the Billy Joel catalog of hits and is well-versed in current pop tunes. He’s happy to take requests as dessert is served. His saffron-cardamom crème brûlée is nearly legendary, and everyone loves his orange olive oil and espresso salttopped vanilla ice cream. At night’s end, Rantanen hands each guest a menu printout to help spark inspiration.

“People are often intimidated by throwing a dinner party,” Candelaria says. “But my goal is to reveal that it’s really not so difficult. It’s all about good food and good company. Anyone can do it.”

Happy Place My

Given the beauty of California, you’d expect the stretch of the Los Angeles coast to boast a parade of luxury resorts. Instead, there are just a few, and one grand dame rules the Palos Verdes Peninsula— Terranea Resort.

Having won many awards like the Forbes Four-Star Award, AAA Four Diamond Award, Conde Nast Traveler Reader’s Choice Award, and more, the resort is as approachable, and the staff is as friendly as possible. Perhaps the influence of the property’s new president, who is all things happy in one person, has set an example for everyone.

How did this happy place come to be? Terranea Resort opened in June 2009, and since then, I’ve had my eyes on this slice of heaven for a trip. As luck would have it, I recently indulged in a rare vacation with a girlfriend to see what I’ve been hearing great things about myself.

The Mediterranean-inspired resort has a Spanish Colonial vibe and panoramic ocean views. Here, the blue water meets the blue skies, and the distant view of Catalina beckoned me. Yet, why would I want to leave such a complete resort experience?

The 102-acre property is by no means small. Its positioning on the bluff is sprawling, and there is so much to do on the property, including visiting its world-class spa and enjoying the award-winning, nine-hole, par 3-links golf course with ocean views.

Long before Terranea’s debut, the pristine setting on the Palos Verdes Peninsula was a backdrop to a rich heritage and a diverse natural habitat. Once a part of the Channel Islands, the peninsula shifted slowly over millions of years and fused to the mainland coast of California. As a result, it is now home to a unique collection of rocks and plant species.

Before Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, a Portuguese explorer, discovered the peninsula in 1542, the Indigenous Gabrielino-Tongva Tribe lived in prosperity there as seafarers, traders and fishermen.

Years passed as stewardship slipped from Spanish land grants to private ownership until the 1913 purchase of 16,000 acres by a consortium of New York investors led by Frank A. Vanderlip, considered the founding father of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Today, the resort’s biggest suite is named after Vanderlip.

Terranea’s scene-stealing backdrop has attracted Hollywood film crews since the 1950s when Lloyd Bridges starred in the popular TV adventure series Sea Hunt. Since then, Terranea’s dramatic oceanfront setting has been featured in numerous television and feature film productions, from Pirates of the Caribbean to The Beverly Hillbillies

For this week, the scene-stealing backdrop was all mine. I enjoyed a two-bedroom, three-bath villa with ocean views through every door and window. My home base for my trip was much like a home, with a nicely appointed kitchenette, laundry facilities and enviable closet

space. I had a fireplace in my living room and on one of my two balconies overlooking the ocean, perfectly positioned for stargazing.

If I had been willing to depart my luxe villa, I could have joined other guests for one of the monthly stargazing sessions with a high-powered telescope positioned at a fire pit with hot chocolate and s’mores. But alas, I had fire, water and wine at my villa, so I gazed from my balcony.

My awesome location puts me just steps from the spa and fitness center for daily workouts and is close to the coastal trail on the bluff, which takes me to a lighthouse one day and a posh neighborhood the next.

There are so many ways to enjoy Terranea. Starting with the spa, I enjoyed the Crimson Revival, where contrast therapy revitalizes circulation and enlivens the senses. It incorporates detoxifying thermal mud, a massage and sessions in a dry sauna and a Swiss shower. It’s an ultra-pampering, two-hour experience.

I’ve never experienced contrast therapy, which means combining hot and cold. Even my Swiss shower had cold and hot water jetting simultaneously. I followed that treatment with a CBD facial, which was incredibly nurturing for my skin. My aesthetician pointed out that most people don’t know the depth of skin nutrition in CBD, and it’s all the rave right now.

The extensive spa includes everything you’d expect in a top spa, including a dry and steam sauna, a hot therapy pool and a cold

plunge. The styling stations offer good products, and every treatment room provides picturesque views. The upstairs recovery lounge has one of the best views on the property.

Feeling detoxed, invigorated, shiny and smooth from head to toe, I took my happy skin to the spa pool for some much-needed vitamin D. The pool boasts fantastic views, lounge seating with fire pits and service from the resort’s extra healthy spa café, solviva, which highlights wellness with locally grown and procured ingredients for healthy fare that on this day paired well with a fresh, limey skinny margarita.

Dining at Terranea is like being on a luxury cruise ship…in a good way. There are nine dining destinations, each with its own flair. You can enjoy bubbles at sunset on the Veuve Clicquot Terrace, adorably styled in Veuve gold accents. Breakfast is served at catalina kitchen, where you can dine inside or out.

My favorite daytime meal was at Nelson’s, with its spectacular clifftop setting directly above the Pacific Ocean and fire pits and outdoor dining on shaded picnic tables in the sand. You’ll find all the fan favorites here. I ordered the seafood cob with shrimp and lobster both times. Yum.

For a more formal take, mar’sel is Terranea’s signature restaurant, reflecting a modern twist on California cuisine as inventive as its name suggests (Spanish for “sea” and French for “salt”). A seasonal, gourmet menu spotlights local ingredients alongside herbs and

produce grown on property in the mar’sel garden and at Terranea’s main garden adjacent to the resort. There’s good reason to dress up, as the cuisine is elevated, and the wine sommelier is ready to suggest what pairs best with your dinner that night.

It was just announced that mar’sel was awarded Wine Spectator’s Best of Award of Excellence for its 10th consecutive year for its outstanding wine list of 375 selections and impressive wine service. Given the restaurant’s name, French wine was the selection for the evening to complement the elegant seasonal Californian cuisine with an inventive twist created by Michelin-starred Chef Fabio Ugoletti.

I dined at mar’sel with a friend. With so many wonderful items to choose from, we started with the pesto risotto scallops. They were perfectly prepared and excellent. A satisfying bite, I could have almost stopped there. We split the beet salad, which was so fresh and fabulous and then separately ordered the Dover Sole and the Sea Bass.

After a bottle of wine and a remarkably satisfying dinner, we ordered dessert, which we didn’t need. Still, the lemon delizia, a limoncello-soaked sponge cake with lemon custard and cappuccino gelato,

was a perfect palette cleanser. The attentive service, the incredible patio and the panoramic view made this an exceptional dining experience, which you should not miss. Make a reservation for sure!

We had a similarly delightful dinner with a completely different vibe on another night. Bashi is a modern take on Asian cuisine with a long list of sake options. We opted for the patio again…who can beat this view? The Sizzling Shaking Beef is a local favorite. It comes on a sizzling platter and is perfectly seasoned, juicy and delicious. The sushi is fresh, elevated and inventive. We also had curried veggies that paired great with the beef. This is an excellent stop for a light bite or a serious dinner.

If we weren’t hiking, spa-ing, sunning or dining, we were shopping. That’s what girlfriends do. And with decades of shopping miles trekked, we were impressed by the resort shops at Terranea, so much so that one of us had to check a bag home. Vacation well done once again.

There are plenty of things to do, places to dine and trails to walk on this idyllic coastal trip. Now, I know what everyone has been talking about, and I look forward to sharing, too.

That’s A WRAP

The experts at The Paper Place guide us on gift wrapping.

With the holiday season in full swing, gift-giving is top of mind. Stores are stocked with festive wrapping papers, beautiful ribbons, bow embellishments and essential gift-wrapping supplies. One shop that takes pride in its elevated and beautiful stationery materials is The Paper Place.

The family-owned stationery and gifting business has been in the valley for more than 47 years. Mother and daughter team Judy and Nancy Silver opened the store in 1978 in Scottsdale and immediately received positive feedback. Shortly before Judy Silver passed away in 1994, her younger daughter, Betsy Hendricks, joined the business.

Since then, Nancy and Betsy have run The Paper Place, serving generations of customers and providing the community with bespoke stationery and services, including party planning and invitation-making. “I think one of the reasons we have been around so long is because we go above and beyond for our customers to add that extra touch,” Hendricks says.

Like most anyone, you’ve probably experienced frustration when your vision of a perfectly wrapped gift is marred by too much or too little paper, unwanted creases or tears. Store manager, Linda Anderson gives us a tutorial on wrapping a gift perfectly every time.

“It’s more exciting when you get a beautifully wrapped gift. It increases the anticipation of what’s inside,” Hendricks says.

STEP-BY-STEP

HOW TO WRAP

STEP 1

4

Wrap the paper around your gift until the edge of the paper is in line with the edge of the gift. Tape the paper to hold it in place.

STEP 4

Turn the gift so the side is facing you. Put your hand in the center of the gift’s edge and push the paper down. This should give the paper the look of an “n.” 1 2

STEP 2

Fold the remaining paper over to fully cover the body of the gift. Tape the paper down.

3

STEP 3

Cut any excess paper from the sides to avoid bulkiness and unnecessary creasing.

STEP 5

From there, crease the edge of the paper and fold it into the gift.

ICONIC TIP

The less tape used during this part of the process, the better.

Make another crease to the unfolded part of the paper. 5 6 7 8

STEP 8

Once both sides have been folded and creased, you should be left with excess paper in the shape of a trapezoid.

STEP 6

STEP 7

Repeat Steps 5 and 6 on the unfolded corner.

STEP 9

Bring that piece to the already folded edge and tape it down.

STEP 10

Repeat Steps 3-9 on the unwrapped side of the gift.

10 11 12 13

STEP 13

Wrap the ribbon still on the spool around the present, creating a “t” on the bottom side.

STEP 12

Take the excess ribbon and twist it with the ribbon still on the spool until it is perpendicular.

STEP 11

Flip the bottom of the gift so it faces upward, and wrap the ribbon from the bottom of the gift to the top side of the present.

STEP 14

Measure the ribbon to match the side that’s already cut.

STEP 15

Tie a bow with the ribbon.

THAT'S A WRAP!

STEP 16

Fold the end of the ribbon in half and make a diagonal cut.

NY UNCOVERED

How to celebrate the holidays in the city that never sleeps.

Photography by Brittany Petronella

As we stepped off the train at Penn Station, the energy of New York City enveloped us. My traveling companion, my eight-year-old son, wideeyed with wonder, could hardly contain his excitement.

The bustling streets pulsed with energy, and the towering skyscrapers seemed to never end. I paused to ask the building attendants at Madison Square Garden a question and when they heard it was my son’s first visit, they welcomed us with high fives, a discussion of baseball teams and a loud “Welcome to the Big Apple!” They even hailed a cab for us.

It felt like a scene straight out of a movie.

We laughed as we climbed into the yellow cab; I could see my son’s eyes sparkling.

We zipped through the streets, the sights whizzing by—from the hustle and bustle of Hell’s Kitchen to the serene beauty of Central Park, each moment burst with discovery. This was more than just a trip; it was the start of a journey into the heart of a city that never sleeps and is filled with endless excitement, as one would expect of NYC.

During the fall and winter holidays, NYC transforms into a wonderland. There are endless options for holiday-themed events throughout the city, including the ICONIC Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The

tradition started in 1927 when the first giant character balloons were introduced. Be sure to stroll around the Upper West Side near the Natural History Museum the night before the parade to catch the balloon setup. It is a festive event that I have experienced several times.

Locals and tourists walk the streets to watch the massive balloons inflate, starting in the early evening and continuing until the early morning hours. Each balloon is tethered to a crew of handlers. ICONIC characters like Snoopy and SpongeBob SquarePants have become favorites over the years. The setup process is a unique opportunity to see in person the largerthan-life balloons and witness the kickoff to festive Thanksgiving traditions.

Check out Lightscape at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. This stunning winter event transforms the garden into an illuminated landscape. With a dazzling array of light displays, this experience includes pathways adorned with colorful lights, immersive installations and artistic projections. Visitors can wander through themed sections, from shimmering trees to enchanting arches, combining art and nature.

My holiday favorites include the ICONIC ice skating at Rockefeller Center, where the twinkling lights create a brilliant holiday atmosphere. Another often-missed skating venue is Wollman Rink in Central Park, where the city views and company of fellow skaters are a great way to get into the holiday spirit.

STAY

One of the best places to stay is Loews Regency on New York’s Park Avenue, a luxury hotel on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Its location offers easy access to Times Square, Carnegie Hall and Central Park on foot.

Our room was spacious, modern, elegant and surprisingly quiet. It also boasted a balcony with a view of Central Park, making it a spectacular spot to watch the sunrise with a hot cup of coffee.

The hotel has 379 guest rooms yet has an intimate feel. Its luxurious spa, hair salon and the fabulous Regency Bar and Grill are filled with well-dressed tourists and elegant New Yorkers.

EAT

Regency Bar and Grill offers classic American fare with an international flair.

Led by Executive Chef Manjit Manohar, the restaurant crafts dishes of exceptional quality sourced from local and organic farms. The venue sources both sustainable and fresh ingredients.

Some menu suggestions include the classic RBG burger served on a toasted brioche bun, homemade pickles, lettuce, onion, tomato and cooked-to-perfection fries. If fish is your dish, you can’t go wrong with the pan-seared Branzino garnished with leeks, winter citrus, sunchoke and herb sauce.

Dessert is delicious, and if you don’t have room for delectable options like the Valrhona chocolate mousse with raspberry sauce, don’t worry—room service can always deliver, and you can indulge when you do.

One of the best meals in midtown Manhattan was at Le Marais, an old-fashioned French steakhouse with scrumptious steaks adorned by salads and fries. I indulged

in the entrecôte, Argentine grass-fed beef, while other diners commented how delightful the braised lamb shank, escarole and white beans dish was. Additional tasty options include the roasted salmon paired with haricots-verts and cherry tomatoes.

Everything is made with a French flair, and the food is sublime. Le Marais boasts an elegant but welcoming atmosphere, not to mention speedy service, which was an extra perk after a full day of wandering the city streets and exploring on foot.

An excellent option on the Upper West Side that serves mouthwatering modern Mediterranean dishes is The Hummus Place. This hidden gem is on 305 Amsterdam Ave.

A medley of flavors will surprise you, from fresh salads to hummus to various spectacular eggplant dishes. The food is authentic and tastes home-cooked. Be sure to try the thirst-quenching homemade lemonade, a personal favorite. The food is so good that I dined there more than three times during my one-week trip.

Journey to

SRI LANKA

Part I

Your ultimate guide to the tropical island of Sri Lanka

.

Embark on a journey to the stunning island of Sri Lanka. Its rich history, artistic sensibilities and stylish accommodations will captivate you.

Sri Lanka (SL) is a teardrop-shaped island in the Indian Ocean, just off the southern tip of India. I loved exploring its vibrant culture, warm hospitality, fine cuisine, rich history, national parks, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, pristine beaches and breathtaking landscapes.

This two-part article, “Journey to Sri Lanka,” begins with part one, which explores half of my recommended itinerary. Part two will complete the journey and be featured in the next issue. The duration and plan for your stay in Sri Lanka can be customized to fit your timeline and preferences.

ARCHITECTURE

With the arrival of Buddhism in the third century BCE, the island’s art and architecture flourished. Temples and stupas were intricately designed and adorned with elaborate carvings and frescoes, reflecting spiritual themes and devotion.

The legacy of Portuguese, Dutch and British colonial rule introduced new styles and materials. This fusion created unique structures, blending local traditions with European influences.

Notable contemporary architecture in Sri Lanka strongly focuses on sustainability, blending modern design with the island’s cultural heritage. Architects and designers are crafting innovative spaces seamlessly integrating traditional elements, especially in hotel design.

1. COLOMBO

Colombo is the gateway city to Sri Lanka, and the main international airport is Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB).

Let Colombo introduce you to what lies ahead. Historical and cultural landmarks to see include Gangaramaya Temple, Independence Square, the National Museum of Colombo, and De Saram House. A food tour is recommended to explore the city’s multicultural blend of people and food.

You may also want to visit and learn about the ICONIC architecture of Geoffrey Bawa (1919 – 2003). The renowned architect from Sri Lanka is widely recognized as the country’s foremost influence on modern architecture.

Bawa was openly gay. His life and work often intersected with themes of identity and place. The richness of his legacy is reflected in a life lived authentically and creatively.

Bawa was known for creating fluid transitions between indoor and outdoor spaces, emphasizing harmony with nature. His innovative use of space, light and materials, as well as his sensitivity to the surrounding landscape, has created benchmarks for architectural innovation.

Bawa’s architectural portfolio includes many projects, such as private residences, hotels, office buildings and public institutions. Explore Bawa’s designs and influence with visits to De Saram House, Galle Face Hotel, Sri Lanka Institute of Architects (SLIA), Tamarind Tree Restaurant, and Paradise Road The Gallery Cafe.

2. JAFFNA

Beyond the typical itinerary, consider exploring north Sri Lanka with a one-hour private scenic flight to Jaffna.

Jaffna is located at the northern tip of Sri Lanka. It is the capital city of the Northern Province and is known for its rich history and unique Tamil heritage.

During your visit, sail to Delft Island in the Indian Ocean. Explore the serpent-shaped “Growing Stone,” the ancient Baobab tree from Arabic traders and the colonial-era fort with its prominent Queen’s Tower. Visit the Stupa, a local worship site, then follow wild horses to the pristine beach with clear waters and diverse marine life.

Also, visit Nagadeepa Island, home to Nagadeepa Purana Vihara, one of Sri Lanka’s 16 holiest Buddhist temples. A 10-minute walk away lies the Nainativu Nagapooshani Amman Kovil, a historic Hindu temple dedicated to Goddess Parvati as Pooshani Amman, revered for blessings of prosperity, protection and fertility.

On another day, explore Jaffna and immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of the Jaffna Market, which offers a glimpse into local Tamil life. Visit The Minister’s Palace, a ruined architectural testament to the wealth and cultural richness of the Jaffna Kingdom that ruled the Northern region from the 13th to early 17th century.

3. ANURADHAPURA DISTRICT

Enjoy a scenic four-hour drive south to the Anuradhapura District and stay at Uga Ulagalla Resort, a luxurious retreat surrounded by reservoirs, lush paddy fields and lily ponds. Explore rustic farmland, local villages and indigenous forests, where you may spot elephants and other wildlife.

Spend a day exploring the ancient city of Anuradhapura, which dates back to at least 1000 BCE and served as Sri Lanka’s capital from the fifth century BCE to the 11th century CE. This is where rulers embraced Buddhism in the third century BCE.

4. SIGIRIYA

With a scenic one-hour drive south of Anuradhapura, Sigiriya is a must-see site. The Sigiriya Rock Fortress, also known as Lion Rock, is an ICONIC UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sigiriya was constructed as a fortified royal palace complex situated strategically on a massive rock outcrop nearly 660 feet above the surrounding plains, which offered natural protection against invaders.

Dating back to the fifth century CE, Sigiriya showcases the sophisticated engineering and architectural prowess of ancient Sri Lankan civilization. To reach the fortress, the ascent involves a series of stairs and pathways that guide you to various viewpoints and attractions, including the renowned frescoes and the Mirror Wall.

In the countryside around Sigiriya, spend a day exploring a remote village by bicycle, e-bike, or tuk-tuk. This immersive experience allows visitors to engage with the local culture and way of life.

Near Sigiriya, a photo safari in Minneriya, Kaudulla National Park, or Hurulu Eco Park provides opportunities to see Asian elephants,

THE GIFT OF GIVING

A donation to The Asha Trust Sri Lanka helps sustain the efforts of a non-profit organization dedicated to providing education and support to underprivileged children and their families. Established in London in 1991, Asha works on the outskirts of Colombo, offering a range of educational and recreational programs for children, including art therapy, mindfulness, dance and music sessions.

It also supports children with disabilities, helping families access specialized care. In July 2022, the trust launched the Family Food Challenge, seeking donations to provide essential food supplies to families facing hardship due to rising inflation.

Sri Lankan sloth bears, Sambar deer, wild boar, pythons, monitor lizards and butterflies such as the Common Rose and Blue Tiger. Birdwatching is exceptional as well.

5. KANDY

On the 3.5-hour drive between Sigiriya and the city of Kandy, stop to visit the Dambulla Rock Cave Temple. The temple is a significant historical and religious site, famous for its ancient cave paintings and Buddha statues.

As you journey toward Kandy, the landscape transitions from flat plains to gently rolling hills. You will pass scenic rice paddies and vibrant agricultural fields. When you approach Kandy, plan to explore the region’s tropical beauty, including rubber plantations and tea estates, during your stay.

Kandy is located in Sri Lanka’s central highlands. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the island’s cultural capital. In the center of Kandy, bordering Lake Kandy, is the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. This is the most significant Buddhist site in Sri Lanka, housing the sacred tooth relic of the Buddha. It is an active temple, and visitors can witness traditional rituals and offerings.

A personal favorite experience is visiting Kandy Lake as sunset approaches. There, you can witness thousands of white egrets and large bats flying into the trees surrounding the lake to nest for the night, creating a beautiful, natural spectacle.

Just outside of Kandy, the Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya is famous for its vast collection of tropical plants that includes more than 4,000 species.

Upon departing Kandy by train, a highlight is enjoying the colonial-era station and riding the old trains that have changed little over the decades.

6. HATTON

This three-hour train ride to Hatton is a wonderful way to see the rolling countryside as you climb into the hills and tea plantations. Luxury accommodation options include exceptional colonial-era tea planters’ estates with beautiful views of hills and lakes. Activities include hiking, kayaking, mountain biking, croquet, tea factory visits, tea tastings and spa treatments. The resident tea planters will show you their age-old tea-making process.

Part two will be featured in the next issue, completing the journey.
