AWARDS
FOR EXCELLENCE
Chewton Glen are delighted to announce that they have been awarded ‘Rural Hotel of the Year’ in the Food and Travel 2023 Reader Awards. Thank you for your votes and your continued support – from the whole team at Chewton Glen, we couldn’t be prouder to bring home this award.
Congratulations to Anita Bower, our Director of People & Culture, who was awarded the Relais & Châteaux’s Woman of the Year Trophy. Anita perpetuates the Iconic values and embraces her role wholeheartedly, taking care of our people both individually and collectively. Relais & Châteaux particularly recognised Anita’s ‘Talent Development Plan’ which aims to further team members’ career progress, stating: “Anita succeeds in building loyalty among team members and is a shining beacon for the Association’s human resource values and its appreciation of personal contributions.”
In central London, The Mayfair Townhouse’s The Dandy Bar has been recognised as the ‘Best Bar’ in the United Kingdom, by Condé Nast Johansens in their prestigious 2024 Awards for Excellence. Of course, this wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication of our exceptional team. Their warmth, knowledge and talent ensures that guests are treated to nothing short of the extraordinary, crafting innovative and delectable cocktails that keep them coming back for more.
Dear Friends,
After what feels like the soggiest winter in living memory, at long last, spring looks like it is here to stay and before we know it, the British summer social season will once again be upon us…
From Royal Ascot to Badminton Horse Trials, Chelsea Flower Show to Cowes Week; Cheltenham Races to Henley Regatta; Goodwood: The Festival of Speed, Revival, or simply Glorious; Grange Park Opera, and Wimbledon… the list is endless, and better still, our wonderful collection of rather special hotels, coaching inns and townhouses are conveniently located for you to make a night or two of it, and make the most of that wonderful hospitality! So dig out your linen wardrobe, ‘don’ your coolest sunnies, and make the most of the summer sunshine. In my humble opinion, it is unquestionably the best time to indulge in what Britain does better than anyone else.
Any excuse to be outdoors is always my mantra at this time of year and to that end, all our Head Chefs have been tasked with creating some seasonal new additions to add to their respective menus, best enjoyed alfresco, and washed down with a ‘wee’ glass or two of rosé. And, as I write, all our picturesque and rather atmospheric, flower-filled terraces, courtyards and pavements, are being spruced up in readiness for our super team to welcome you like old friends.
If this isn’t enough to tempt you back, then I sincerely hope that the following pages provide the necessary inspiration to come and treat yourself or a loved one, to a well-deserved escape. There is so much going on this summer, it would be a shame to miss out!
Best wishes,
Andrew Stembridge Executive DirectorI-Spy

The anniversary, along with Relais & Châteaux and Chewton Glen’s shared focus on sustainability were marked with the planting of seven cherry trees, led by Relais & Châteaux President Laurent Gardinier. A tree representing each decade, positioned along the driveway of the property, will create a living reminder of the occasion for decades to come.

First, they explored rebalancing with a mindful gentle Hatha Yoga session, with the theme of ‘letting go’. Then, reconnected through Yoga Nidra, a guided meditation practice which is deeply restorative. Forest Bathing
“I took a walk in the woods and came out taller than the trees”
HENRY DAVID THOREAU
The Japanese practice of shinrin-yoku (shinrin means ‘forest’ and yoku means ‘bath’) encourages us to bask and absorb all the natural elements of the forest, connecting with nature through the senses.
Proven to be beneficial to both mental and physical health, studies have shown that it reduces stress and boosts happiness, as well as lowering blood pressure and heart rate, while strengthening the immune system. Spending time in nature fosters peace of mind, allowing space and time for creative thought and reflection, something that the fast pace of modern life doesn’t always allow for. If you’re looking to slow things down, there’s nothing better than taking a gentle walk through the beautiful grounds of our properties (or in the nearby forest, parks, or countryside) which provide the perfect setting to absorb nature, as the vitamin D sunlight filters through the leaves, and you breathe in the fresh, fragrant air.
OUR STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO FOREST BATHING:
• Remove technology and find a peaceful spot within the woods to begin
• Take your time… walk slowly, be in the moment, and be guided by your instincts
• Allow the forest to unlock your senses...
• Breathe the clean air deeply
• Listen to the melodic birdsong, and the rustle of the breeze through the trees
• Smell the scents of the leaves, the forest floor, fauna and flora surrounding you … notice whether it’s dry or damp
• Take in the array of colours encompassing you
• Touch the contrasting textures of rough bark, smooth leaves, feel droplets of water, or dip your fingers into a stream. Lay on the ground, taking in the canopy of nature above you, and connect with the earth below.
• What sensations can you feel in your body?
Want to find out more about forest bathing and its benefits? Speak to a spa team member at Chewton Glen, Cliveden House or The Lygon Arms, who will be happy to assist you and recommend beautiful places (both on and off the estates), to experience all that nature has to offer.

HIDDEN STORIES Beautifully REVEALED:
LADY ASTOR BY JOHN SINGER SARGENT
Visit the Great Hall at Cliveden House, and you can’t fail to notice the playful presence of Lady Astor’s portrait, eternally watching over the social scene of Cliveden. Immortalised in oils by John Singer Sargent (a member of the Royal Academy) in 1908, Nancy’s vivacious nature was rendered perfectly, echoed in the lightness of touch and deftness of detail; the tactile, soft folds of her dress and the fall of light upon her, the silk scarf gently fluttering on the breeze as she smiles over her shoulder. Part of an innovative movement of artists fascinated by capturing the new American woman, Sargent’s work highlighted the energetic spirit of his female sitters, rather than the traditional preference for female passivity.
John Singer Sargent depicted women from all walks of life but was particularly intrigued by women’s rights pioneers in the US and the UK, such as Miss Carey Thomas, the feminist President of Bryn Mawr College, and Elizabeth Garrett Anderson, a physician and suffragistit was therefore fitting that he would be drawn to Nancy Astor. The first female MP in British history to take a seat in parliament in 1919, she was known for her outspoken views, including stricter restrictions on alcohol, and advocating for women’s rights. She fought for the development and expansion of nursery schools, for children’s education, and worked to recruit women into the civil service, the police force and the House of Lords.
A new exhibition at Tate Britain in London (February – 7 July) explores the ground-breaking portraiture of Sargent, and how his meticulous attention to detail for each sitter identifies him more as a modern-day stylist than a traditional artist. Like stylists of today, his use of fashion was central to the unique and innovative look and feel of his work, enabling him to not only emulate the character of the sitter, but also to express his own vision and creativity through portraiture. Guests of Cliveden can travel on the Elizabeth line from nearby Taplow Station directly into London Paddington.
For more information about Tate Britain’s ‘Sargent and Fashion’ exhibition visit: www.tate.org.uk.
After visiting Cliveden to see the original painting, and experiencing the breath-taking home of Nancy Astor, why not embrace our Iconic Road Trip and combine Tate Britain’s exhibition with an overnight stay at The Chelsea Townhouse, whose walls proudly display a replica of the original painting, in homage to their previous incarnation in previous years as ‘The Cliveden Townhouse’.

SKIP-GEN TRAVEL
The trend of grandparents and grandchildren holidaying together is not necessarily new, but it has certainly gathered pace in the last twelve months. Chewton Glen’s Cookery School offers a fantastic place for cross-generational bonding and baking on wet weather days, while the beach and New Forest are on the doorstep for exploring rock pools and woodland glades. Paulton’s Park and Peppa Pig World are close by for the more adventurous.
Cliveden House is in close proximity to Legoland Windsor, or if royal history is more your thing, take the kids to explore Windsor Castle for a day.
Family and dog-friendly, The Lygon Arms has so many options locally to keep the kids entertained. There’s Cotswolds Wildlife Park and Adam Henson’s Activity Farm nearby; The Cotswold Water Park for more of a splash, and the fascinating history of Warwick Castle too. For a calmer option, take a gentle meander through the countryside on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway.
GIG TRIPPING
With so many wonderful music events in London, including the open-air variety, there’s never been a better time to book a fabulous room to flop into once you’ve danced the night away. The Mayfair Townhouse is literally around the corner from Hyde Park for the British Summer Time events, so whether you’re a fan of Andrea Bocelli or Robbie Williams, you won’t have to go far for that last nightcap. The Royal Albert Hall is also on the doorstep (Eric Clapton will be playing for two nights in May), and Cadogan Hall is a stone’s throw away from 11 Cadogan Gardens and The Chelsea Townhouse.
Visit The Lygon Arms in the Cotswolds for your gig, home-fromhome in the countryside, where you can catch the Cheltenham Jazz Festival in May, or groove to Nile Rodgers & CHIC, at The National Arboretum, Tetbury, in July.
Chewton Glen is merely 30 minutes away from Bournemouth International Centre, which hosts many big stars and shows, or for a pop fix, head to Southampton for Take That and Olly Murs at the beginning of June.
Iconic Luxury Hotels are proud to have partnered with FuturePlus, an award-winning sustainability and ESG management platform that empowers companies to measure, improve, and report on their sustainability impact and goals. Here are five snapshots that highlight our journey so far:
Good stewardship of the estates including the planting of native species of trees, developing wildlife habitats and minimising our environmental impact on the areas of special interest.
Devotion to sustainability and wildlife is a top priority of the Estate Team at Chewton Glen. Initiatives include replacing summer bedding with perennials that both attract bees and insects and reduce the plant waste of summer bedding. Thickening hedgerows with Rosa Regosa attracts bees, while wildlife can feast on the rosehips. The number of bird and owl boxes have also been increased across the estate, to help our feathered guests to thrive.
Oak tree saplings found growing in the wrong place are uplifted and grown on to plant when they are bigger - the first cluster of oak trees from this initiative now flank the main drive. Meanwhile each Christmas tree is recycled: rooted trees are replanted, while cut trees are logged to create habitats for hedgehogs and ground-nesting birds.
To work with nominated local charities and organisations to assist in their fundraising and environmental awareness campaigns when possible.
Iconic Luxury Hotels honour an ongoing commitment to Hospitality Action, who support those in the industry that have fallen upon hard times. Fundraising is achieved via the Invisible Chips initiative, available on menus throughout the properties, as well as the annual summer fundraiser that encourages staff to get active for this worthy cause. In addition, 14 members of our team took part in a 100-mile cycle through the Cotswolds in May, raising money through sponsorship for Hospitality Action. Equally, each individual property will support and raise funds for their own locally nominated charities – for example, the team at 11 Cadogan Gardens support The Kensington & Chelsea Foundation, as well as volunteering with the local homeless charity, Glassdoor.
To encourage clients using the meeting and conference facilities within Iconic Luxury Hotels’ properties to participate in local schemes that ‘give-back’ to the community, including clean-up campaigns, working on projects for schools and community schemes.
The Lygon Arms has partnered with local charity The Heart of England Forest, a charity dedicated to creating a forest spanning 30,000 acres across Warwickshire and Worcestershire, for future generations to enjoy. As a Heart of England Tree Champion, we offer event organisers, (be it corporate or private), the chance to take virtual ownership of a tree in a publicly accessible part of the Forest. This is confirmed with a Tree Champion certificate, a location map to the Forest, and a ‘what3words’ reference so they can visit their tree. Corporate groups can also attend a volunteering day, which involves either tree planting or maintaining the existing woodland. A picnic lunch and a short, guided walk around the area with one of the volunteering staff members is included.
The Mayfair Townhouse offers corporate groups the chance to give back to the community through their partnership with Cook for Good. Their Cook and Share event trains teams to make meals that make a difference. Participants hone their cookery skills, then package and label an extra 50 tasty nutritious meals ready for distribution to local shelters and residents of the housing estates in Kings Cross. This not only develops invaluable teamwork, but also has a positive impact on those less fortunate in the local community.
To continue to source local produce within the framework of good financial management without compromising on the quality of the ingredients supplied.
Hayles Fruit Farm is a trusted supplier of apple juice to The Lygon Arms. Established in 1880 when Lord Sudeley planted the original seeds that resulted in this beautiful natural legacy, the resulting orchards now bear fruit for the property’s apple juice and craft ciders. Guests can pay a visit to the farm, enjoy a scenic Nature Trail that winds its way through the 134-acres, as well as sampling some of the delicious produce from the on-site farm shop and cafe, or even opt to pick their own fruit.
To review the environmental policies of all our suppliers and actively encourage good environmental practice wherever possible.
Working in partnership with local trusted suppliers not only ensures that the produce is fresh, but equally that we support the local community, in addition reducing the carbon footprint and food miles. We carry this ethos across all Iconic Luxury Hotels properties, optimising local partnerships and ensuring our accountability to responsible sourcing is held at a high standard. For example, Chewton Glen’s Estate Manager, Darren Venables, is part of a local New Forest Horticultural buying group, and purchases materials in bulk alongside others in the cooperative. Transport waste is reduced, with only one lorry required to transport the goods from the main suppliers, rather than everyone getting smaller, independent, multiple deliveries.
