Introduction
Syngenta Facts and figures 2013
Grow more from less
The world’s population is constantly growing. By 2050 there will be an estimated further two billion people bringing the total up to nine billion. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) says that agricultural productivity needs to increase by 70 percent by 2050. At the same time, arable land the size of a football pitch is being lost every minute due to soil erosion and urbanization. We need to produce more food without using more arable land, water, fertilizer or crop protection products. The question of what contribution our company can make to sustainably producing enough food for a growing world population, has been occupying us for some time. In our Good Growth Plan (see page 22 and 23) we have integrated our many years of experience and initiatives into our business model and set ourselves six ambitious and measurable targets to be reached by 2020. Preserving areas of arable land, strengthening rural communities and promoting plant and resource efficiency are of immediate importance. The achievement of these targets will be assessed by third parties.

Syngenta in Switzerland - We would like a pragmatic debate in Switzerland and a genuine examination of the challenge of global food security. Our country must preserve its farmland and optimize yield in order to make its contribution to sustainable food production, even if at the moment we can import much of what we consume. - We need unbiased cooperation of all parties involved. We will develop our partnerships with local farmers, universities and research institutes, as well as other organizations in Switzerland, and seek new partnerships. - The framework conditions are decisive for Syngenta: For a company operating internationally and resident in Switzerland, which relies on innovation performance, it is crucial that Switzerland offers a pro-business and pro-research environment and an internationally competitive regulatory framework also for multinationals. The central pillars of Swiss economic policy are under political debate, but Switzerland has excellent potential to remain an attractive location for Swiss and international companies. Only a productive working relationship between decisionmakers and companies to preserve the framework conditions will ensure future investment. Christoph M채der, member of the Syngenta Executive Committee

As in previous years a number of demo fields have been established throughout Switzerland in both German- and French-speaking regions. Syngenta demo fields are located in: • Möriken (AG) near Lenzburg • Dielsdorf (ZH) near Zürich-Kloten • Safnern (BE) near Biel • Sulgen (TG) near Weinfelden
• Pomy (VD) near Yverdon-les-Bains • Commugny (VD) near Nyon • Eschenbach (LU)

Good Growth Plan
Syngenta Facts and figures 2013
One planet. Six commitments. Humanity is facing its greatest challenge. Every day, our planet wakes with 200,000 more mouths to feed and more farmland lost to erosion. Many people who produce the world’s food are living in poverty, while biodiversity is disappearing fast. We have only one planet, and we’re using its resources 50% faster than it can take. We commit to make a measurable contribution to helping farmer overcome six major challenges by 2020:
Make crops more efficient
Rescue more farmland
Help biodiversity flourish
by increasing the average productivity of the world’s major crops by 20% without using more land, water or inputs.
by improving the fertility of 10 million hectares of farmland on the brink of degradation.
by enhancing biodiversity on 5 million hectares of farmland.
23
Syngenta Facts and figures 2013
But we can’t do it alone. We know we don’t have all the answers. So we’re going to work with growers, governments, NGOs and others who share this agenda. We’re also going to report on our progress on our website. If you would like to work with us to achieve our targets please email us at switzerland.communications@syngenta.com More online: goodgrowthplan.com
Empower smallholders
Help people stay safe
Look after every worker
by reaching 20 million smallholders and enabling them to increase productivity by 50%.
by training 20 million farm workers on labor safety, especially in developing countries.
by striving for fair labor conditions throughout our entire supply chain network.
