1. Industry Growth. THE GOAL: Increase understanding, awareness, and adoption of segmental concrete pavement as the preferred pavement system. Growing the association’s digital presence enables ICPI to effectively communicate with members and user audiences by moving from reliance on traditional media to a new digital communications strategy. This new strategy places an emphasis on targeted digital communications such as social media, online videos and email to drive engagement with the ICPI website. This approach helps connect ICPI to members and users more efficiently and with measurable results. ICPI made great strides in these areas over the past year with digital marketing campaigns to grow participation in our workforce development program and

not only demonstrate great accomplishments, but these committees and events provide members with a voice in their industry’s future and enable efficient (and fun) opportunities for making connections that frequently solve problems, improve productivity, and increase sales. 4. Workforce Development. THE GOAL: Empower the industry to attract, train and retain a highly qualified workforce to meet market demand. Workforce Development remains a significant concern across the entire construction industry. With little evidence that workforce development challenges will subside for the foreseeable future, ICPI is growing a suite of high-impact recruitment and career development resources for ICPI member use. PAVERS

industry health report

With a robust North American economy and a backlog of demand in residential and commercial sectors, the industry appears to be poised for strong growth in the year ahead. The leveling of sales and pent up demand has been mostly due to an insufficient number of installers now being addressed with workforce development programs ICPI members can use locally. The other factor over which there is little control has been wet spring for much of the continent. The following characterizes our growth trajectory:

8 FUTURE LEADERS GET CERTIFIED

Promotional partnerships are an important contributor to the success of our workforce development programs. ICPI’s cooperative agreements with National Concrete Masonry Association (NCMA) and National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP) provide our industry with valuable resources to promote hardscape careers. Most recently, ICPI and our partners launched a social media awareness campaign that very effectively promotes career opportunities in the hardscape industry. The campaign features individually branded pages on Facebook and Instagram encouraging contractors to share

and tag posts. The NALP partnership includes the ability to post hardscaping jobs on the LandscapingIndustryCareers.org job board. Further, ICPI cooperatively shares video and social content on partner channels to highlight career opportunities. Development of materials for promoting paver installation as a career. I wanted to grow my business as a professional interlocking paver installer who meets or exceeds industry standards. By becoming a member and Certified (CCPI) I show my potential clients that I install according to ICPI standards. This shows I take pride in my work and at the same time attracts the clients I want to work for. ICPI has helped me grow my business not only with my membership and certification, but also by keeping me up to date on trends, changes in the industry and installation practices for a variety of applications. 7:1, prospects for products and services now seek options first on social media and expect providers to immediately understand their unique interests. To accomplish this, ICPI collaborates in research and planning to identify the best prospects for hardscape careers as well as the right platforms and messages to attract them. In the example statements here, we find compelling stories we shared on social media to attract talent to the industry.

I applied and was accepted into four different universities to satisfy my mom at the time. She wanted me to have options and no regrets‌ I sold my books and was able to get most of my money back from the first semester. I took that money, along with a small scholarship my local gardening club gave to me, bought a ticket to Nashville, booked a room and attended my first HNA at which point I became ICPI certified. I've been hooked ever since. Gairad DeCastro, Premier Landscape, Rhode Island

We’ve been exhibiting at HNA for eight years and have gotten phenomenal exposure for our brand. From the moment the doors open until the show closes, our reps are talking non-stop with attendees— gathering leads and making sales. We have exhibited at other shows, but HNA is the only one we have on our roster to exhibit every year. Sonia Mirabal, Latux Diamond Blades Deerfield Beach, FL

ICPI FOUNDATION

multiplied gains

ICPI Foundation for Education and Research. As a 501c(3) charitable and educational organization, the ICPI Foundation sharpened its focus by incorporating support of the ICPI Strategic Plan as its core mission. Support comes from a $5.3 million endowment with a target return of 5-7%. This investment has yielded over $1.6 million in grants awarded since 2006 to help improve the industry’s future. The Board of Trustees’ emphasis has been on return on investment (ROI) as well as leveraging funds from other interested parties.

Recently Funded Projects Developing Deflection Acceptance Criteria for Compacted, Open-graded Aggregate Bases for Permeable Pavements Using Lightweight Deflectometers (LWDs)—Oklahoma State University Quality control and quality assurance (QC/QA) of unbound aggregate layer construction in pavements has traditionally been based on measuring density using a nuclear density gauge. Measuring density of open-graded bases for permeable pavements, however, is next to impossible as results are highly variable. This research addresses the need for developing compaction specifications based on deflection criteria measured with an LWD, a technology in existence since the 1980s. This cutting-edge work follows recent development of LWD protocols and an AASHTO provisional specification for deflection measurements on compacted subgrade soils and dense-graded bases. Several state departments of transportation in the US (e.g. Florida, Indiana and Minnesota) have adopted compaction control specifications for these

materials using LWDs. The trend toward using LWDs among other state DOTs is growing due to the inexpensive and fast nature of the tests. This research will model and conduct full-scale tests on a number of open-graded base structures and develop specifications for deflection-based compaction control. Work includes a literature review, laboratory tests, field testing, numerical modeling and a compaction control specification written in AASHTO format for eventual submission to AASHTO.

ASCE Headquarters Low Impact Development Parking Lot Retrofit Demonstration Project This grant to the ASCE Foundation provides approximately 6,000 sf of PICP at the entrance and for visitor parking at the ASCE headquarters office building in Reston, VA owned by the ASCE Foundation. This project will be exposed to several thousand visiting engineer members of ASCE each year. The project is part of a larger LID retrofit project for the parking lot surrounding the ASCE’s six story office building. The current ASCE project site plan received by donors places PICP in parking spaces only. Project construction is expected to start in summer 2020. The Foundation will develop a maintenance plan in consultation with ASCE and the Foundation will pay the necessary costs associated with such a maintenance plan for a specific term mutually acceptable to both Foundations. Maintenance is in addition to donation of construction materials and services.

$10,000. A report received on March 2019 provided results from non-destructive structural testing using a falling weight deflectometer (FWD) as well as a pavement condition survey using ASTM E2840 Standard Practice for Pavement Condition Index Surveys for Interlocking Concrete Roads and Parking Lots. The FWD revealed deflections higher than normally expected for this pavement structure, i.e., 3⅛ in. thick pavers, 1 in. of bedding sand over 14 in. of Caltrans Class 2 aggregate base and geogrid on clay soil. However, the data confirmed the structural contribution of the pavers and bedding sand to be as high or higher than an equivalent asphalt thickness. This project will contribute useful experience to a county agency moving forward with about 3.5 million sf of concrete pavers for roads in an industrial park. The Howard Road project includes a condition survey in 2020 and 2021.
